DP World Tour Championship: Jon Rahm earns impressive win in Dubai as Rory McIlroy ends season No 1

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm secured a third DP World Tour Championship victory with a two-shot win in Dubai, as Rory McIlroy ended the season top of the DP World Tour rankings.

Rahm took a one-shot advantage into the final round and never left the top of the leaderboard during an entertaining final round at Jumeriah Golf Estates in Dubai, mixing six birdies with a lone bogey to end the week on 20 under.

The Spaniard's closest challenge came from Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren, who carded rounds of 66 and 67 respectively to share second spot, with McIlroy a further stroke back in fourth spot after a four-under 68.

McIlroy's finish ensured he retained his place at the top of the season-long DP World Tour rankings and secured him the Harry Vardon Trophy for a fourth time, with the world No 1 also becoming only the second player in history to win the PGA Tour's FedExCup and the DP World Tour order of merit in the same season.

Relentless Rahm wins again in Dubai

Rahm made the dream start when he birdied his opening three holes but failed to get up and down from the greenside bunker to save par at the fourth, as Noren followed successive birdies from the second by holing from 30 feet at the sixth to briefly get within one of the lead.

Noren bogeyed the par-five next, where Rahm rolled in from 20 feet to briefly go three ahead when Hatton followed four birdies in his first eight holes with a three-putt bogey at the ninth.

Rahm reached the turn with a two-shot cushion over Noren, who birdied the ninth and halved the advantage with a 25-foot birdie at the 12th, with the Spaniard regaining that margin by draining a 30-footer at the par-three 13th.

Hatton posted back-to-back birdies from the 13th to pull level with Noren and added another at the par-five last, setting the clubhouse target at 18 under, as Rahm moved a big step closer to victory with a six-foot birdie at the 15th.

Noren birdied his penultimate hole and recovered from finding water off the final tee to save par at the last, keeping him alongside Hatton in tied-second, as Rahm negotiated the closing holes to complete a record fifth Rolex Series title and become the first three-time winner of the DP World Tour's season finale.

How McIlroy ended European No 1

McIlroy came into the week top of the season-long standings and one of seven players with a mathematical chance of ending as European No 1, with the four-time major winner going into the final day with a narrow lead in the projected standings over US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

The Northern Irishman birdied his opening two holes and cancelled out a dropped shot at the next by making a 10-foot birdie at the fifth, before responding to a dropped shot at the ninth by starting his back nine with a birdie.

Back-to-back birdies from the 14th saw McIlroy close on Rahm at the top of the leaderboard, with the world No 1 closing a final-round 68 with three pars to top the DP World Tour standings for the first time since 2015.

Fitzpatrick needed a top-two finish to have a chance of leapfrogging McIlroy, although dropped four shots in a five-hole stretch around the turn on his way to a one-over 73 and a share of fifth place with compatriot Tommy Fleetwood.

Xander Schauffele moves to No. 2 in FedExCup, OWGR after PGA Championship win

Change Text Size

No one is catching Scottie Scheffler anytime soon, but Xander Schauffele’s victory in the PGA Championship shuffled the standings near the top of the FedExCup and Official World Golf Ranking.

Schauffele rose to a career-best No. 2 in the world ranking and remained second in the FedExCup standings Sunday, lessening the gap between him and Scheffler.

With the 750 points he earned Sunday, Schauffele now trails Scheffler by 1,417 points. Scheffler earned 191 points with his T8 finish at Valhalla Golf Club.

The fact that Schauffele was second in the FedExCup before picking up his first win of the season is a testament to his consistency in 2024. Schauffele had seven top-10s in 11 starts before arriving at Valhalla, including runners-up at THE PLAYERS and last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, where he was overtaken by Rory McIlroy in the final round.

Schauffele surpassed McIlroy in the world ranking with Sunday’s win, moving up one spot after his first major victory. Schauffele, who played his first PGA TOUR season in 2017, entered the top 10 in the OWGR in December 2018 and cracked the top 5 three years later. He became the world’s third-ranked player for the first time after finishing eighth at the Masters.

Leading DP World Tour trio in Japan target U.S. PGA Championship through Asian Swing

For many of the DP World Tour members playing in the ISPS HANDA – CHAMPIONSHIP, the significance of the possible reward of qualification into next month’s U.S. PGA Championship is impossible to ignore.

The ongoing Asian Swing – the third of five Global Swings on the 2024 Race to Dubai schedule – presents an exciting opportunity: Exemption into the second men’s Major Championship of the year.

At the conclusion of next week’s Volvo China Open, the players who finish in the top three positions in the final Asian Swing standings will earn a spot to compete at Valhalla Golf Club from May 16-19.

Heading into this week’s event in Japan, Sebastian Söderberg sits just outside those spots but is well placed to break into the top three after moving into a share of the clubhouse lead at ten under through his opening two rounds at Taiheiyo Club’s Gotemba Course.

The Swede has made two appearances at a Major, both of which have come at the US Open in 2016 and 2022.

Asked whether the reward of a Major exemption was in his mind after a six-under-par 64 in the second round, he replied: “Absolutely, but I know you have basically got to win.

“We have got three spots [and] four events, so the winners have got the front seats. You probably need a win.”

Both Keita Nakajima, who leads the Asian Swing standings after his maiden DP World Tour title in India last month, and third-placed Kiradech Aphibarnrat are projected to make the cut in Japan.

But with Porsche Singapore Classic winner Jesper Svensson, who came into the week lying second, set to miss out on the final 36 holes, there is opportunity for those to make up ground before China.

One such player is Yannik Paul, who played alongside fellow DP World Tour winner Söderberg over the opening two rounds and holds a share of the lead after a second consecutive round of 65 in Japan.

The German played in last year’s U.S. PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club and is eager to feature again, with his current world ranking of 127 not set to earn him direct qualification.

“I know that I need a good performance to get into the [U.S.] PGA Championship based on world ranking,” said Paul, who sits 21st on the Asian Swing standings.

“I played last year, and I want to play on the big stage at the majors. I would lie if I said I wouldn’t be disappointed if I can’t play the PGA.

“I am trying to just take it day by day and see where I end up.

“I don’t really look at the leaderboard. I just try to stick to the process. Sometimes I get too distracted about the outcome.

“That is basically my main goal; just focus on the process, not the result or the leaderboard and see where I end up on Sunday.”

Another player riding high on the leaderboard in Japan and on the Asian Swing standings is in-form Englishman Sam Bairstow.

After finishing third in Singapore and then a tie for 13th in India, the European Challenge Tour graduate is now in a share of the lead at the penultimate event on the Asian Swing.

“I’m just keeping it simple, sometimes you can just overthink it,” said Bairstow when asked what he attributed his good form to.

Having come into the week ranked sixth on the Asian Swing, he is doing himself every favour in his bid for his first Major appearance overseas.
