The TV host-actress also recalled highlights from her career in the entertainment industry and sweet moments with her loved ones. Among them were the Baron Travel Girl pageant back in 1976 and the International Emmy Awards.

“I am grateful to have lived, loved, and learned and all the more thankful that I am continually living, loving, and learning,” Santos-Concio added.

Why Charo Santos joined beauty contests

  • BY Alex Brosas
  • March 2, 2021

Long before showbiz beckoned, Charo Santos was already an accomplished beauty queen, winning titles in her native Calapan, Mindoro.

Charo Santos

Her mom, Nora Navarro-Santos encouraged her to join beauty tilts, of course with the approval of her dad Winifredo Santos.

But Santos didn’t entertain the thought that she would conquer beauty pageants as she revealed in her interview with Toni Gonzaga on the latter’s YouTube channel yesterday, March 1.

Santos won these titles: Miss Calapan, Manila’s Five Prettiest, Miss Green Race 1974 and Baron Travel Girl.

“Kasi sa probinsiya ay magkakakilala lahat. They would always approach my mom and my dad and ask, ‘Uy, puwede ba iyong mga dalagita mong anak isali natin?’ Isa ako sa mga paborito niyang isinasali,” she recalled.

(It is because in the province everyone knows everyone. They would always approach my mom and dad and ask, “Hey, can your teenage daughters join the contest?” I was one of her favorites to field in the pageants.)

Charo Santos

Did she see herself as a beauty queen?

“No,” came Santos’s curt reply. “I was never conscious of my beauty. It was never about my beauty and myself. It was more like I was being an obedient daughter,” she said.

Growing up, Santos was already into listening radio dramas.

“I think my father also is a storyteller. He would gather all six of us. He loved to watch movies so he would gather us after dinner and would tell us the story of the movie he had just seen,” she said.

“Having grown up in a simple environment, having grown up in a probinsiya (province), when I listen to different stories,  it transported me to different worlds. It broadened my horizon. It opened up the world to me,” she added.

Santos’s dad is a soldier while her mom is a teacher.

“Mahilig sila sa showbiz (They were into showbiz),” Santos revealed. At one point, when her father was still single, he worked as a ticket seller in a cinema in Bulacan.

“So, he got exposed to the world of cinema. He loved to buy showbiz magazines. Alam mo, ang favorite actress niya, si Helen Gamboa,” she revealed. (You know, his favorite actress is Helen Gamboa.)

Santos’s mother ventured into singing but was not able to pursue it because her father was very conservative.

“He thought that the place of a woman is sa bahay lang (just at home). So, I guess, iyong mga frustrations ng nanay ko ay na-project sa aming mga anak niya (my mom’s frustrations were projected onto us, her children),” she said.

Santos has since retired as ABS-CBN’s president and CEO but she remains the company’s chief content officer. She is also host of the long-running weekend show “Maalaala Mo Kaya.”  NVG

The Butcher | Elsa Payumo: She helped propel the careers of Coney, Charo, and Chiqui

by Butch Francisco /

Miss Caltex ran from 1962 to 1970. The one winner with the most public recall was Elsa Payumo. A native of Bataan, she went to the UP Conservatory of Music where she earned a degree in Voice and Piano. As a career, she joined the travel and tourism industry and put up her own travel agency. She was so successful that she became the president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) four times. Showbiz, however, owes her for putting up the Baron Travel Girl search.

Coney, Charo and Chiqui. The three Cs.      They are, of course, Coney Reyes , Charo Santos , and Chiqui Hollmann. All three women carved their own niches in show business.      Their common denominator? They were products of the beauty and brains search called Baron Travel Girl that ran for quite a number of years in the 1970s.

Baron Travel Girl was similar to Miss Caltex, which was the most prestigious beauty contest in the 1960s. It was bigger than Binibining Pilipinas, which was established by J. Amado Araneta two years after the creation of Miss Caltex.

Founded in 1962, Miss Caltex was a marketing tool used by the petroleum company to promote its products, particularly gasoline. Filipinos were already starting to buy cars then and had to gas up. Caltex’ chief competition was Esso. This was at a time motorists only had to shell out cents for a liter of gas.

To establish name recall, Caltex put up a beauty and brains/personality contest. This was how Miss Caltex was born.

Since the winner was going to be Caltex’ brand ambassador, she needed to have the confidence and maturity to face different kinds of people. The company therefore required its contestants to be no younger than 21 – with, at least, two years of college to her name.

Most of the winners turned out to be college graduates. One of them, Cecilia Borja-Chiongbian of Cagayan de Oro, in fact, was in Manila supposedly to pursue a master’s degree at the Ateneo when she was drafted to join Miss Caltex and eventually won.

Since Miss Caltex didn’t have a swimsuit portion, young women from prominent families didn’t hesitate to join the competition. And the organizers didn’t accept applicants with questionable backgrounds either.

The prizes were the biggest that time. The winner received P5,000 in cash, a complete set of wardrobe, jewelry pieces, appliances and was given the chance to travel to various destinations abroad. One winner, Amy Gustilo-Lopez, donated her prizes to the underprivileged Ifugao children of Bontoc.

Miss Caltex was a year-long competition. Initially, five finalists were chosen. All five were each given a P500 monthly allowance (at a time private school teachers received P300 a month) and were made to travel extensively.

The first Miss Caltex winner was Mila Amunategui-Abad. She had a long and fulfilling career as an executive of Philippine Airlines.

Even those who failed to clinch the title became public figures themselves or gave birth to kids who became celebrities: the actress Maggie de la Riva; Amparito Llamas, the mother of Monique Lhuiller; Henrietta Silos-Mendez, who later became MTRCB chair; Ma. Victoria Pamintuan, the mother of David and the late Carlos Celdran; Fernandita Cantero, who later became Mrs. Francisco Tatad; Luisa Matti, the mother of Amanda Page. One Miss Caltex finalist was a Muslim princess, Yasmin Kiram.

Miss Caltex ran from 1962 to 1970. The one winner with the most public recall was Elsa Payumo. A native of Bataan, she went to the UP Conservatory of Music where she earned a degree in Voice and Piano.

After winning Miss Caltex, she received a deluge of offers to join the movies. However, she didn’t want to become an actress. But she agreed to do ramp modeling. She loved doing fashion shows organized for charitable purposes. Elsa was also a much sought-after cover girl, which was why she had one of the most recognizable faces in the country throughout the 1960s.

As a career, she joined the travel and tourism industry and put up her own travel agency. She was so successful that she became the president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) four times. Elsa also spearheaded the Most Outstanding Taxi Driver of the Year search.

Her accomplishments in the world of travel and tourism were widely recognized. In fact, she even made it to the list of the Ten Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service or TOWNS. At one time, she also served as Makati councilor.

Showbiz, however, owes her for putting up the Baron Travel Girl search. One of those who benefited from this contest was Charo Santos .

By 1973, Charo had already been modeling and was crowned Miss Green Race, a contest intended to promote the government’s Green Revolution project at a time there was food shortage in the country.

Charo was already an established name by then and was the star of the sitcom Ang Lola Kong Baduy , which she did with Chichay. But somehow, the movies (a business bigger than TV that time) eluded her. Charo’s world changed, however, when she joined Baron Travel Girl.

No, she didn’t want to try her luck in Binibini because there had always been a swimsuit segment there and she didn’t feel confident about being able to fill out a bathing suit. Baron Travel Girl was more up her alley since it was mainly for young women of substance.

On the night of the contest, Lino Brocka happened to be watching the televised event. Lino knew that Mike de Leon was looking for a girl to star in Itim. When Lino saw Charo on stage, he immediately called up Mike.

Turning on the TV, Mike saw Charo and knew in his heart that he had found his star. Charo did Itim and was later declared Asia’s best actress. Aside from being an actress, Charo also became a film and TV executive – the first and only woman president of a major network.

In the case of Coney Reyes , she first joined showbiz using her real surname, Nubla. Somehow, the public didn’t pay her much attention. She even did a kissing scene with Eugene Torre in the Vilma Santos movie, Basta’t Isipin Mong Mahal Kita, but didn’t get far in the business.

And then, she joined Baron Travel Girl. She may not have won the contest, but being one of the finalists there gave her a lot of exposure. This led to her being drafted as the female co-host of Student Canteen in 1975.

Chiqui Hollmann also became a familiar face when she became a Baron Travel Girl finalist. Like Coney, she may not have won the title, but the media exposure she got made her popular – popular enough to have been chosen as the first female co-host of Eat Bulaga .

But while the careers of Coney, Charo and Chiqui went to soar in showbiz, Elsa went through rough times. Her mother got sick and having lost her business, she ended up financially challenged.

It was her faith in the Lord that made Elsa bounce back. She joined Buklod ng Pag-ibig, a religious organization based in Quezon City. Elsa also became an active fund-raiser for the church and was responsible for building adoration chapels in the south and north of Manila and, of course, in her native Bataan.

Heaven must have been so happy with her final work on earth that she was called back to the Lord’s loving arms last October 18 after suffering from cardiac arrest. Elsa Payumo was 83.

Elsa may have refused to join the movies, but she helped propel the careers of three distinguished women in the field of entertainment. Without Elsa Payumo, showbiz would not have had Coney, Charo, and Chiqui.

Charo Santos-Concio unwraps ‘gift of wealth and gift of health’

  • Rizal Raoul Reyes
  • January 1, 2021
  • 4 minute read

Former ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio (Maria Rosario Santos-Concio in real life) is one of the more accomplished Filipinas in this generation. The Saint Paul’s University alumna has distinguished herself as an actress, producer and television executive.

Santos-Concio, who grew up in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro told CNN Philippines’ “Leading Women” that she was really a movie fan of the great movie stars during her younger days. She loved watching double programs in the town’s cinema. “The fan in me would want to know the process in making a great TV show and filmmaking,” Santos-Concio said.

The path to stardom started when Santos-Concio was named Baron Travel Girl in 1976. After the event, the late director Lino Brocka told her that director Mike de Leon was looking for a fresh face to star in his first film, Itim . When her parents gave her the go signal to pursue a potential career in show business, she auditioned and bagged the lead role. Santos-Concio showed she had acting chops when she won the best actress trophy in Mike de Leon’s Itim during the 1977 Asian Film Festival. “I was 20 years old then. I just wanted to try something different. That started my path to acting,” she said.

In the 1980s, she produced highly acclaimed films such as Peque Gallaga’s Oro, Plata, Mata and Ishmael Bernal’s Himala under the Experimental Cinema of the Philippines.

As the host of the popular ABS-CBN show Maalaala Mo Kaya , Santos-Concio has develop a strong bond and connection with overseas Filipino workers. In a webinar organized by Sun Life Philippines, Santos-Concio pointed out that working overseas has enabled millions of Filipinos to broaden their horizons.

On the other hand, Santos-Concio said OFWs have to hurdle the challenges they are facing while toiling overseas, such as homesickness and the fear of losing the bond between the parents and the children.

Right now, Concio is a brand ambassador of Sun Life Philippines’ Parent of the OFW Starter Pack to help Filipinos working overseas invest their earnings. The pack also consists of Sun Senior Prosperity Money Market Mutual fund investment starting at P7,000 per month.

Santos-Concio said the checkered stories of the people who are called the country’s modern heroes have brought sympathy and understanding to their plight. “Hearing about their pain always resonates in my heart,” she said.

With her sweet and friendly personality, Santos-Concio was always approached by OFWs while waiting for their flights.

She said that their fear of losing connection with their children is a major challenge for OFWs, especially when the children grow into adolescents without their parents. Indeed, it is a big dilemma as OFWs sacrifice a lot for the family to give their children a better future. At the same time, they could only wish to be with their children as they grow up, guiding them to become more responsible adults.

Santos-Concio said that constant communication is the most important part of the equation in the lives of OFWs. She urged the parents to check regularly on the emotional state of the children. “Don’t take for granted your relationship with your loved ones. Keep on communicating with them to ensure that they are on the loop,” she advised.

Santos-Concio said the children of OFWs should also play their part responsibly by giving value for every dollar that their parents send to them. She said it would be a good move to save a portion of their remittances for emergency situations. “Beneficiaries should also play a part in practicing fiscal and financial discipline,” she said.

Based on her parenting experience, Santos-Concio always involved her children when they were young in managing their financial resources. While they were growing up, she taught her two sons how to save their allowance. She kept reminding them “this is as far as you go in spending your allowance.”

Santos-Concio said the best time to start teaching financial literacy and discipline to children is when they are young. It starts with teaching them how to manage their allowance. “Live within your budget and means. Always be prudent in spending money. Be smart in managing your budget,” she said.

Aside from teaching them how to save, children must also learn to be prudent in spending their money, she said. Parents must teach their children the family priorities and, equally important, children must live the values that the parents taught them. Teaching values such as frugality is important because it will help them develop and become responsible in their lives,” she said.

She underscored the importance of teaching these values to the children of OFWs so they can pass these on when they have their own children. “It is important to teach them the right values because this will be their foundation in life. It will help them overcome the challenges in life,” she said.

“Parents should reinforce positive values to their children when they are growing up so they will grow as responsible individuals,” she added.

The multi-awarded actress said children should not be feeling entitled and pampered. Instead, she said children should appreciate the dedication and efforts of their OFW parents who always look after their welfare.

It is a fact that OFWs try to compensate for their absence by pampering their children. However, Santos-Concio urged OFW parents to allot “me time” for themselves so they can have the opportunity to unwind and relax from the rigors of work and long-distance parenting.

“When they tell their stories about their loneliness, they don’t take anything for granted and always put their families first on their priority list. But I always tell them, don’t be hard on yourselves so you can come back to your loved ones in tiptop shape.”

Sun Life has been focusing on this segment of society for some time, in its desire to help OFWs develop a solid economic foundation for their future at home. “It is a gift of wealth and gift of health.”

Elsa Payumo: The Ageless Beauty with Substance Gives Back at 80

BY Katherine Alamares

Now at her glistening Ruby age of 80, Elsa Payumo—a truly familiar name, and one of the most recognizable faces, I must add, especially to baby boomers—looks back on her well-lived-with-no-regrets-life-with-a-purpose, as she genuinely reflects on where she is now while she reluctantly and hesitatingly shares on what she has given back.

Born and raised by a loving close-knit family in Bataan, where she spent happy carefree days of her youth, Elsa earned her Major in Voice and Piano degree from the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music in Diliman, where she was a perennial head-turner—the absolute campus heartthrob.

Prodded by many to join the search for the prestigious Miss Caltex, she easily won the coveted title – a distinction and a dream for every beauty pageant hopeful.

This catapulted her into instant fame—and eventually became a household name all over the islands—sans the presence of the telecommunication technology and ever-active social media. And thus, she was broke into the magic circle of admirable ladies who exuded timeless charm, exemplary grace, and sharp wit—wherever she was.

Constantly and continually under public scrutiny and without a single mean bone in her, she captured everyone’s heart!

She soon enchanted several glossy magazines readers as the print industry’s perennial favorite covergirl. A sought-after ramp model, specially when extravagant and exclusive one-night-only fashion shows were more than instrumental in fundraisers. She would likewise be the top choice of the iconic Filipino couturiers with a global following and whenever there were collaborations with sterling fashion houses from foreign capital cities.

The toast of the town, she gave a brand new meaning to the much-abused phrase “gracing the affair”.

In fact, she was offered to join the leading film studio to be their newest movie star, which she politely declined.

The ever-smiling, popular Elsa basked in the limelight as she traveled all over the country as an invited guest and the epitome of breeding, beauty, and brains.

At a crossroads in her career path, she was so entrenched into the beauty of the Philippines and the world of airplanes and ships, hotels and resorts, tours and pilgrimages, limos and busses, sightseeing and shopping, she opted to be a wholesaler and an operator—a passionate travel agent for travel and tours.

She predictably and passionately carved out a new landscape for tourism alongside the life of the glitz and the glamor—for this was her pioneer advocacy for the era. A no-nonsense lady at the forefront!

“Looking back, I realize there is something more to life than the frivolities of renown. But the title nevertheless helped me join the travel industry where I was given the chance to initiate novel ideas of promoting tourism,” as she reflected on her newfound endeavor.

She eventually served as a four-time president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association, the premier organization of the industry, and successfully launched Baron Travel Girl, regarded with the same esteem as the competition that launched her to stardom.

As proof of her successful big-impact impact, she was the very first recipient for the Tourism Category of the Ten Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Award – a body which aims to “have a nation of empowered women who serve as catalysts for national development towards improving quality of life.”

To put it into perspective, TOWNS has likewise recognized women greats such as Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Senator Loren Legarda, media personality Mel Tiangco, TV producer, and journalist Cheche Lazaro and international singer Lea Salonga, to name a few.

One not to sit on her laurels, Elsa decided to dabble into public service. Her campaign as a pro-people candidate won her a seat as a councilor of the City of Makati.

With the cycle of time, her mother fell gravely ill and came with it the total loss of her own business, now in ruins. Due to her dedication and devotion to her family, she forfeited her material possessions and languished through her lowest point in life.

Almost simultaneously, she miraculously found much-needed support and therapeutic healing through the Buklod ng Pag-ibig, a Catholic Charismatic Community with the late Fr. Pascual Adorable, S.J., as its founder.

She was given a Bible which she treasured through the years and has been the source of her answers.

Eventually, there was a reversal of fortunes and she surrendered full time to serve the Lord through the selfless act of Bible studies and being the healing ministry head at Buklod ng Pag-ibig. She likewise organizes and conducts activities like prayer meetings and successful fundraisers for the Holy Family Parish in Kamias, Quezon City.

baron travel girl winners

Whenever invited, she gives inspirational talks and recollections to the Balik-Samahan group of artistas , assists to raise funds for worthwhile causes with the all Nations Womens Group, the Beauty Queens, Karilagan Models and Best Friends Forever tourism circles.

She was the key to setting up the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapels in Alabang, Valenzuela, and around Bataan.

Guided and inspired by the Divine, she joined the wildly popular TV game show Deal or No Deal, where she won over one million pesos, which she wholly donated to the Buklod ng Pag-ibig.

To everyone looking in, Elsa has served her fellow Filipinos through the Great Maker in every way.

Her secret for her zest in life and healthy well-being—at 80 at that—lies in her diet of just veggies and fish, with the occasional treat, but with moderation. Even at her age, she keeps up with a faithful exercise regimen—daily brisk walks around the neighborhood and engages in stationary biking. She regularly goes dancing. Ever since her youth, she has only ever used Ivory Soap for her eternally youthful skin—and not much has changed.

Having lived a glamorous yet meaningful life—but not without its own share of extreme ups and downs—Elsa likewise remains as fit and healthy as her Miss Caltex days, physically and spiritually.

When Ninoy was consort and little known facts on PH beauty contests

baron travel girl winners

ESCORT A 21-year-old Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. (third from left) served as escort to his fellow Kapampangan, 1953 Miss Philippines Maria Cristina Galang (fourth from left). PHOTO REPRODUCTION AND PHOTO BY E.I. REYMOND T. OREJAS

Before he married Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco in 1954, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., then in his early 20s, served as escort to Kapampangan beauty queen Maria Cristina Galang of Tarlac province.

Galang reigned as Miss Philippines during the Philippine International Fair in 1953.

A photograph showed Ninoy, then a bachelor, standing behind Galang as she was crowned. She bested rising movie stars, high-society girls and provincial delegates, including Imelda Romualdez, who would later become the country’s First Lady.

Galang, then 19 and a student at Lyceum, was a daughter of former Tarlac Gov. Alejandro Galang. Ninoy, a native of Concepcion, Tarlac, had been working as adviser of then Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay. At 17, he made a name for himself as the youngest correspondent to cover the Korean War for the Manila Times.

Ninoy was familiar with beauty contests because his mother, Aurora Aquino, of Concepcion town, was a Lakambini (Maid of Honor) in a 1927 petit fair, a local quest of the first nationwide beauty competition, the Manila Carnival, that began in 1908.

It was after his stint as Galang’s escort that Ninoy married Cory on Oct. 11, 1954, and was elected mayor of Concepcion at the age of 22 in 1955.

Art director Alex Castro dug this least-known fact about Ninoy and of the country’s beauty queens and pageants for his book, “Aro Katimyas Da! (How charming they are / A Memory Album of Titled Kapampangan Beauties (1908-2012).”

In the page for consorts of national beauty queens, Ninoy is joined by Dr. Basilio Valdez (for 1926 Carnival Queen Carmen Prieto) and Ernesto Santos (for 1938 Miss Philippines Guia Balmori).

It was while working in the advertising agency D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1991 to 1995 when Castro was struck by homesickness.

To cure this, he combed a flea market in 1994 for anything Filipino, finding old photographs of Manila Carnival queens. He never stopped collecting, acquiring 4,000 pictures of Filipino beauty queens since

Pura Villanueva of Iloilo won the 1908 Manila Carnival.

Old photographs of places, people and events in Pampanga province also inspired him to ask the Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) of Holy Angel University (HAU) to publish his first book, “Views from the Pampang” in 2006.

An “annotated pictorial history album” is how Castro calls his latest work, describing it to be a “tribute to my lovely kabalen (province mates).”

BOOK cover of “Aro Katimyas Da!”

The book documented a comprehensive list of winners with known and traceable Kapampangan roots who have won official beauty titles.

Castro and the CKS launched the book on July 27 or a year before the 50th anniversary of the crowning of Gemma Cruz-Araneta as Miss International in 1964.

“We seem to add another bragging right: That our women are also among the loveliest in the country,” HAU president Arlyn Villanueva said at the launch.

The book, Villanueva said, was “not just about the physical beauty of our Kapampangan women, but about their spunk, their gentility, the strength of their character and the force of their convictions, which are all personified in the Kapampangan beauty title holders.”

“Our Kapampangan women are often described as solicitous to their husbands to the point of servitude, but our history is studded also with women who fought as revolutionaries, as Huk [members] and as New

People’s Army rebels,” Villanueva said.

A fair that featured agricultural, commerce and industrial advancements in the provinces, called the Manila Carnival, which was mounted on and off in 31 years, pioneered beauty pageants in the country.

Universities and colleges fielded their students to the contest.

The Philippines Free Press held its search for Reina de la Belleza (beauty queen) by casting votes for contestants in photographs. The first to clinch the title was Amanda Hizon who married Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos.

A muse was selected for Rizal Day, which was declared by President Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898 in Malolos, Bulacan province. The one held in Manila by Club Filipino ended with Trinidad Ungson placing a crown of laurel on the head of the Rizal bust.

“The Americans transformed it into an affair with a carnival atmosphere, in the tradition of American National Heroes’ Day. Garden Day, also introduced by the Americans, selected Rizal Day muses,” Castro wrote.

Aguman or social clubs looked for their own muses. In the 1930s, beauty contests became fund-raising events for charities and antituberculosis campaigns.

The Weekly Women’s Magazine in 1953 began holding contests for Mrs. Philippines. Estrella Ocampo Lopez of San Fernando, Pampanga, won the crown that year.

Multinational firms Procter & Gamble and Unilever held pageants to promote products. There were searches for Ms Vicks, Ms Camay, Ms Ever Girl, Ms Magnolia, Ms Aviation, Ms Maid of Cotton and Baron Travel Girl.

The Manila Carnival, actually, began on an uproar. Castro wrote that Capt. George Langhorne in 1907 asked the Philippine Assembly for a P50,000 funding to build a hall and “exhibit half-naked Igorots and set up amusements.”

Local newspapers protested, citing the outcome of the 1904 St. Louis exposition on Philippine tribes.

Castro said Governor General James Smith instead directed the secretary of commerce, William Cameron Forbes, to take over. Forbes “designed an international exposition to showcase Philippine-American progress,” Castro said.

Money was raised through sponsorship and public balloting for the queen of the carnival, which was held at the old Wallace Field in Luneta, Manila.

Women vying to be the carnival’s queen were required to have “a good standing in la alta sociedad, with impeccable breeding, character, education and personality, not to mention financial capability.”

The first queen, Pura Villanueva, was among the moving forces in the campaign to allow Filipino women to vote, which was granted in 1937.

Miss Philippines

It was in 1926 that the National Beauty Contest was held side by side the Manila Carnival, with the winner of the former called Miss Philippines.

The first Kapampangan Carnival Queen was Socorro Henson in 1926. The last Kapampangan titleholder was Guia Balmori in 1938.

“In the end, the Carnival was nothing more than a superficial attempt to divert the Filipinos from the real issues that plagued American colonial governance, a balm intended to soothe our wounded national pride,” Castro said.

Still, he said, the carnivals “were still the perfect showcases of the accomplishments of Pampanga’s daughters.”

Global Granary

Miss universe philippines.

Entering a beauty contest and winning it have become a way of life for most girls who want to join showbusiness or become a celebrity.  With a beauty title, one is almost guaranteed a leading lady role in a film and a spot of television hosting.  That is fine and dandy.  Actually some become really good and respected actresses and entertainers.

But what is heartbreaking is that many of these girls/women are very accomplished and intelligent in various disciplines.  They are graduates of some of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the Philippines such as the University of the Philippines, Ateneo, De la Salle, UST, etc ; some of these women finished with honours and yet we do not hear them being exemplary in the field of their degrees.

Why? Perhaps the beckon of a showbiz career has a more powerful pull?!!!  Being a celebrity is a drug.

If you have got the chance to shine, this is it!  You have the world watching you, use it. Don’t be tempted to just be a host or a film actress, those careers are so fleeting, after all major beauty pageants in the Philippines give birth to four new beauty queens each year; be the scientist that you are, be the lawyer that you are, be the doctor that you are, be the economist that you are, be the business woman that you are! Be the inspiration that you spouted you will be.

Miss Philippines Universe

Below is the list of Philippine Representatives to the Miss Universe contest from 1952.

1952 Teresita Torralba Sanchez Teresita was a history maker in the world of Philippine Universe contest. She was the very first Philippine candidate to the very first Miss Universe pageant. She was then a 20-year old medical student at UST.
1953 Cristina Galang Cristina Galang was from Tarlac.  She studied law but was an undergraduate.  She married a doctor and had 5 children.
Maria Blesilda Ocampo 1954 Maria Candida Ocampo Maria Candida Ocampo was a first year Architecture student at the University of Santo Tomas when she joined the beauty contest to represent the Philippines.  A good thing too as it turned out. She was the very first Filipina to land in the top 16 of the Miss Universe pageant.
1955 Yvonne Berrenguer de los Reyes Yvonne Berenguer De Los Santos Yvonne Berrenguer de los Reyes comes from a family of beautiful women. Therefore, many of her kins have entered beauty pageants themselves.
1956 Isabel Escobar Rodriguez Isabel Escobar Rodriguez Prior to joining the beauty contest, Isabel Escobar Rodriguez was a convent girl.  She had to quit in order to enter the pageant.
1957 Mary Ann Carmen Philipps Corrales Mary Ann Carmen Philipps Corrales It seems Mary Ann Carmen Philipps Corrales really wanted to represent the Philippines to the Miss Universe contest.  She entered the Miss Philippines pageant three times.  Third time lucky!
1958 Carmen Remedios Tuason Carmen Tuason Apparently Carmen is not only beautiful but a bit of a brain box as well. She represented the Philippines in the first International mind sports game, which was held in Beijing, China. She has also quite a prowess in the game ‘Bridge’ She was in the 31st ASEAN Bridge Club championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
1959 Cristina Matias Cristina Matias Cristina Matias was also Manila’s Miss Youth 1959.

1962 Josephine Brown Estrada I never thought that Josephine Estrada was a beauty queen of the Miss Universe kind.  She was of course really stunning but I’ve always thought of her as movie queen.  Josephine was a favourite partner of the macho men of Philippine cinema of the 60s.  She has one of the loveliest faces in Philippine cinema.  Josephine prior to the movies was all set to study medicine; it shows she is not only beautiful but brainy as well. What I can gather from the net is that Josephine is now based in Washington D.C.

If I have to name favourite Miss Universe Philippine reps, Chiqui Brosas would be very high on my list.

She has a very winsome smile and countenance.  Apparently even Muhammad Ali was rather smitten with Chiqui when she was one of the ’round girls’ during the Thrilla in Manila.

After the Miss Universe pageant, Chiqui went on to study her higher education in France majoring in International Business Administration  at the American College in Paris.  She eventually married a German Filipino, Ralph Hahn and had a daughter, Regina Hahn, who followed in her mother’s footstep all the way to the Bb Pilipinas pageant.

  • Maribel Lopez

Isabel Lopez, as most beauty queens, jumped straight into making movies.  She made ‘controversial’ films (bold films where there were plenty of disrobing and sex, LOL)

She was more than just a stunning, statuesque beauty,  she can actually act and have garnered countless nominations and awards as an actress.

She remained active for a long time in show business.

Isabel has more talents.  She was a Fine Arts graduate of the University of the Philippines which shows in her paintings and having been a fashion designer for Rustan and SM.

Maribel Lopez married but now separated from Hiroshi Yokohama; they have two children, one (Mara Lopez) is now following in her footsteps by becoming an actress.

maribel22

“When I paint, it’s being self-focused and in the process, I heal myself,” she shared. “Art is good for my wellbeing. I become a better person. Through it, I can give more love and nurture more families.”

Nov 2017 update:

Isabel Lopez is in a bit of a bother at the moment.  Apparently she is being investigated by Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for alleged tampering of security controlled traffic cones meant for visiting ASEAN delegates.  She apparently bragged her misdemeanour in her social media accounts.  Her alleged action is not befitting of a beauty queen, who should be an inspiration to the masses.  She might lose or have her driving licence suspended.

More updates:

Regarding her traffic violation above, Isabel Lopez driving licence has been cancelled and also fined P8000 (Philippine pesos) which is about $159 for 3 traffic violations.  She can then reapply in two years time for a new licence.

She is married to Greggy Liwag, whom she met on a blind date. They have three children, Nicole, John Gregory, and Christopher. Capuyon and her family are now based in America since 1989.

I remember Greggy Liwag in the early 80s.  He used to be a hunk that did bold films.  He showed his sexy abs a lot and was cavorting on-screen with equally sexy leading ladies.

Apparently this was a major reason why they had to move to the US.  Greggy and Cita were always talked about and becoming involved with controversies, where there should be none, brought about by the Greggy’s show business career, which was proving detrimental to their marriage.  To get away from it all, they decided to start over in America where Greggy was born.

Greggy is now an IT expert while Cita works as a claims adjustor for an insurance company.  They lead a happy but quiet life in the US.  And Cita is now a grandmother to two gorgeous kids.

Joanne Zapanta Santos

Joanne Santos Quintas was born in 1976.

At the age of just 18, she won the Binibining Pilipinas in 1995 and representative the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant.

Like most beauty pageant candidates/winners, Joanne ended up entering the world of show business, doing movies and television.  She was also a model and became the image of Pink Soda, an original Filipino clothing brand name.

Whilst modelling she met Domini Primero, who happened to be model as well.  They fell in love and eventually got married and now have three beautiful kids:  Rafael, Mulawin and Mayumi.

Joanne has a talent for photography.  She honed this talent by taking a course in Photography which was a wise decision as she became  famous not only in front the camera but more so  behind the camera.

Unfortunately for her, her corroboration with a  political candidate, Joey Marques, resulted in a minor controversy; it was gossiped that there was more to  their working relationship.  This rumour was fuelled by Joey marquez’ penchant for bedding movie actresses and beautiful ladies.  LOL

But it was all work and no playing around apparently 😉 .  She was the official photographer of  Joey Marquez.

Jewel May Colmenares Lobaton was married to Sen. Aquilino”Koko” Pimentel for a decade.  They are now in the process of annulling their marriage which has irretrievably broken down due to alleged abuse by her husband.  Jewel was quick to clarify that the abuse was in no way physical.  It was psychological torture that left her not sleeping at night for years. 🙁

There was also the case of financial insecurity as her ex was not providing enough maintenance for their two children; this was a surprise as her husband came from a moneyed background.

Jewel said that she was vocal about the form of abuse she suffers from because she wanted to highlight its existence and would encourage others to stand up and stop being a victim.

Unfortunately there is always two sides to a story.  There were rumours that Jewel was allegedly having it off with a married man and was also involved in trying to get a cut from the pork barrel scandal.

Clairol Herbal Essence Style Award

I was at a coffee shop at Harrison Plaza when I picked up an old copy of a real estate magazine, I think it is called Lamudi.  There was an interview with Miriam Quiambao.  Apparently this beauty queen has been dabbling in real estate for quite sometime.  She said her parents are both accountants and had shown her how to value money.  She started saving at 8 years of age.

The monies she earned from the beauty contest activities as well as career in showbiz had been mostly saved.  At the age of 26 she had P250,000.00 which she pooled with a friend.  They started buying foreclosed properties in Cubao and rented them out.  To date she has quite a sizeable property portfolio.  She is quite savvy with money and proud of what she’d achieved.  She likes being hands-on with her properties so do not be surprised to see her if you happen to rent a place via Airbnb which she patronises.

She is a true inspiration!

Shampcey, don’t let your architectural background slide down into the background.  Make it the forefront of what you are.  You have a chance to do something for your country.  TV and films are good but look at what you can do for your country!

Mary Jean Lastimosa is a veteran of the Beauty pageant circuit of the Philippines.  She first joined in 2011, where she was named the second runner up.  She joined again in 2012 where she placed as one of the top 12.

At 26, this is the third time (lucky!) she has joined the Bb Pilipinas beauty contest.  She is very pretty, hope she wins the Miss Universe title for the Philippines.

Update:  bad luck to MJ Lastimosa.  The Miss Universe crown continues to be just out of reach to Filipina beauties.  But goodness, MJ should be proud of herself for having been picked to make up the top 10 semi-finalist amongst 88 of the most beautiful girls in the world or presumptuously, the universe. 😉 lol

2015 Pia Wurtzbach

Miss Universe 2015

baron travel girl winners

Pia Wurtzbach

Pia was born in Stuttgart, Germany to a German father and a Filipina mother, who hails from Cagayan de oro City. Pia is determined if anything else. This is her third time to compete in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, third time lucky. Pia is already in the midst of a mild controversy having been revealed as a dining companion to PNoy, even before winning the Bb Pilipinas title.

Pia is very pretty but I feel that she does not have that special prettiness of what an ideal Filipina winner should have. Gloria Diaz, had it, Melanie Marquez had it, Megan Young had it. They all look like Filipinas or Asian.

The thing with international beauty contest is that they prefer a certain look that promotes a candidate’s particular country. They don’t want a westernised face for an Asian, African or Middle Eastern beauty, after all majority of the candidates are beautiful white women. For Pia to win, she needs to stand out looking like a beautiful Asian!

21 Dec 2015 – Update

Yipee another Miss Universe winner from the Philippines.  I was wrong, sorry! 🙂 Pia, I have to admit, looked very Asian, a Filipina Asian.  She won the pageant under a very anti-climactic event which was embarrassing for Miss Colombia and must be stressful for  Pia as well.

Pia notched more plaudits lately; apparently, she is now the most followed Miss Universe in history; rather unfair to the older ones as there were no access to the internet for a long, long time 😉 lol

Pia’s reign as Miss Universe is one of controversy after another.  It started of course with her winning the title which she had to almost forcibly prise out from Miss Colombia and earned her jealous comments from the other contestants.   She then bagged Dr. Mike, the so-called handsomest Dr in the internet, (???) after twitters and Instagram of them looking like bananas in pajamas, they send shockwaves to Filipino people of their overtly sexual antics.

Before Filipinos can calm down, Pia has moved on to a Fil-Swiss F1 driver, Martin Stockinger, who is also a father of twin girls from an ex.

Pia certainly changed the ethos and notion of Miss Universe, at least amongst Filipinos.  Gone are days of regal and rather aloof reign intent only to do charitable works. 🙂

After her reign as Ms U, Pia will continue as a rep for the Miss Universe org.

24 May 2019

Pia had met her official doppelganger at Madame Tussauds – Hong Kong branch.  She is the first Filipino to be cast in wax by the iconic Madama Tussauds.

Maxine Medina

Maxine Medina

A new Miss Universe representative from the Philippines has been duly crowned by none other than the incumbent Miss Universe herself, Pia Wurztbach, our own Miss Philippines.

Will Maxine be as lucky as Pia? We just have to wait and see. Maxine will need a lot of practice, make-over and tutorial in handling Q&A.

Update 30 Jan 2017:

Miss Universe 2016 was held in the Philippines on 30 January 2017.

Strangely enough, Maxine needed an interpreter during the Q&A. Why???

Bear in mind that  92.58% of the Philippine population can speak/understand English!

Anyway Maxine placed on the top 6.   The crown  was ultimately won by Miss France.

Lesson learnt from this latest Miss Universe contest is that beauty makeover is as important as enriching the mind. It should be beauty and brain not beauty vs brain.

2017 Rachel Peters Rachel Peters, (25)  a Filipino Brit in lineage, has been crowned as 2017 Miss Universe Philippine rep, chosen from 39 beauties.  She is quite tall at 5’9″. Rachel Peters apparently is an experienced event organiser, having worked with Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera, amongst others.  She was apparently quite handy with saws and hammers as well, having helped renovate an apartment given to her and a younger brother. Rachel is already taken.  She is in a relationship with a young politician, Miguel Luis Villafuerte – the current governor of Camarinez Sur. Migz is apparently from a political dynasty, so prevalent amongst the moneyed elite of the Philippines. —  oooppss this might be for another blog. LOL Anyway congratulations, Rachel.  Be sure to bring home the bacon.  Cheers. Update:  Bad luck, Rachel failed in her mission to get the crown for the most beautiful woman in the universe at last night’s pageant night.  Thank goodness to the nimble fingered clicking Filipinos around the world, who voted for Rachel en masse via social media apps,  she reached the top 10 I was really optimistic of her chances after the back to back win from Karen Ibasco for Miss Earth 2017 and Wynwyn Marquez for the Miss HispanoAmericano 2017. What went wrong?
2018 Catriona Gray Catriona Gray This girl is rather familiar with the beauty pageant catwalk, having been a Miss Philippines candidate for the Miss World 2016 and ending up placing in the top 5. Catriona is half Filipino, half Australian, born and raised in Australia.  She moved to the Philippines after high school and started working as a model. Catriona, by all account is quite an accomplished young lady.  She sings, she has a master in Music Theory, she can defend herself as she has a black belt in taekwando.  She can also be reliable as a companion in outdoor pursuits such as kayaking, caving, mountain climbing, etc as she has the official certificate for these and to top these skills, she won’t need an interpreter for the Q&A. Catriona is currently in a relationship with a hunk, someone called Clint. 🙂 Best wishes, Cat! Cat is the 4th Philippines’ Miss Universe winner.  Congratulations!

I hope Catriona Gray wins the Miss Universe title for 2018. But if she did not get to wear the crown for the Miss World 2016, how confident is she to make a breakthrough to the biggest beauty pageant of them all?!!!

I do hope she wins

Maxine Medina apparently is not averse to using an interpreter.

What is going on? Is there a dumbing down to the Miss U pageant? Philippines is known for its fluency and understanding of the English language why suddenly use an interpreter? What happened to the beauty and brain for the Filipina candidates?

Apparently Gloria Diaz has aired her vote of no confidence with the current Bb Philippines contestant to the Miss Universe. They asked Gloria if Maxine is likely to win, Gloria said a resounding “No, but, I think she has a chance and chance is one in a million,” Diaz reportedly answered.

Too harsh considering there are only other 85 contestants. LOL

Miss Universe 2016/17 is to be held in the Philippines on 30 January 2017

Good luck to Pia Wurtzbach for this Sunday, Miss Universe pageant. Bring home to the Philippines the crown, if you can. No pressure! 🙂

The hospitality industry actively targets the female market.

Women are the key ingredient for the travel market, not only in the planning and preparation process for families but for actual travel itself. According to estimates, 64% of travelers worldwide are female, and women spent $125 billion on travel in 2023. As such, the hospitality industry actively targets the female market, often by offering special “girl getaways” packages for weekend excursions and longer. The following girl getaways are designed with luxury in mind.

The Mountain View Villa is ideal for a girls getaway.

Alpine Falls Ranch , Montana

Starting at $32,200 for eight adventurous spirits, the Western Custom Experience offers an all-encompassing four-night stay in the Mountain View Villa, with the option of a full ranch buyout. Each day begins with a scenic view and gourmet meals, from breakfast to dinner, featuring a special brunch with mimosas and Bloody Marys. The package includes daily dining and a choice of the ranch's most popular on-ranch and off-ranch activities. Guests can revel in the thrill of a UTV tour to Diamond Lake, horseback riding, mountain biking or river rafting. Evenings are reserved for bonding over a bonfire with s'mores and drinks, a relaxed bourbon flight tasting or simply enjoying the hospitality at the Six8 Saloon. From the moment guests arrive, whisked away by their luxury airport shuttle service, every detail is finely curated to ensure a seamless and indulgent experience.

Golf at one of the three meticulously designed golf courses.

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas , Dominican Republic

This private, gated resort is located in La Romana and features 7,000 acres of Dominican countryside. A known celeb hotspot, the resort debuted its brand new spa and wellness center last year and has already earned a four-star rating. Guests can expect high-tech treatments with indigenous ingredients, such as seaweed hand-harvested from the Atlantic Ocean to rejuvenate tired eyes. A variety of on-property group activities include horseback riding at the Equestrian Center, tennis/pickleball/paddle ball lessons at the Racquet Center or golf at one of the three meticulously designed golf courses. Choose from a fine selection of wines at La Cana Bar & Restaurant while enjoying delectable French inspired cuisine.

A sparkling pool is an ideal choice for relaxation.

Hotel Paracas, a Luxury Collection Resort , Paracas, Peru

Located three hours south of Lima, this resort is located in the coastal southern hidden gem of Paracas. Luxury group experiences from their “Be Epicurean” program include a 52-foot luxury yacht tour of the Ballestas Islands for a close up of sea lions and penguins. Access one of the only luxury spas in Paracas, Aqu Spa, offering an array of treatments such as body scrubs and wraps, massages and ayurvedic treatments. Located at the end of a private dock from the resort’s beach into the water is Chalana Restaurant, surrounded by Paracas Bay, for a fun girls dinner on the water. Guests can indulge in fresh, locally sourced scallops, sushi and more. Pair your fresh pasta with a glass of full-bodied wine at La Trattoria, a casual Italian restaurant.

A two-tower design features an adults-only wing.

Hilton Vallarta Riviera All-Inclusive Resort , Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Located between the beaches of the Bahia Banderas and downtown Puerto Vallarta, this all-inclusive haven offers two sparkling infinity pools, full-service spa and more. A two-tower design features an adults-only wing. Eforea Spa provides treatments unique to the region such as the Soffio D’Polinesia, an experience based on Hawaiian dancing techniques using the forearm and gentle body rocking to reach complete relaxation. The property’s “Bali Beds” is a customizable group cabana experience with sparkling wine, massages, chocolate-covered strawberries and more. Enjoy your favorite wine with friends at the Martini Lounge, Mojito Lounge and Sky Bar.

Several pools are available for relaxation.
