The Gold King Mine & Ghost Town

We invite you to visit the Gold King Mine and Ghost Town while visiting Jerome Arizona.  The history here is rich and there are stories to be told.  It all began in 1890 . . .

When they dug a 1270 foot mine shaft, (you can still visit it today) searching for copper, they struck GOLD!  The location was only 1 mile north of the mining town, Jerome, but they became their own mining camp called “Haynes”.  In 1901 , the population was 30!  They even had their own post office from 1908 – 1922.

Or course, the gold ran out and the mine was closed.  Years later, 91 years later to be exact, the area was rediscovered by Terry & Don Robertson.  The year was 1981 and Dons’ dream was to share with the world some of the most unique and important icons of the industrial revolution.

Today, the property is filled with vintage transportation: over 180 cars, trucks & motorcycles, including Studebaker’s and Harley’s.  There is mining equipment, historic buildings and a Stamp Mill that was used for crushing the ore.  You will also find a working sawmill and Blacksmith shop with gold panning and a petting zoo for the kids!

We’re happy you’ve found our little spot on the world wide web and hope you can visit in person.  In the meantime, browse around a bit, drop us a line or just view some fun video’s.

The photographic opportunities are endless. Plan on spending at least a few hours if you enjoy photography! Studebakers Harley Davidsons Working Sawmill Old Trucks Old Tools Fire Trucks

For the Guys: Let’s face it, we’re intrigued and enjoy different stuff! Check out our Man Cave areas! To See: Looking for rusty parts, old tools or a Blacksmith shop? We’ve got ’em. How about a working sawmill? A converted school bus flat track racer that Don Robertson built? Maybe you just wish to walk our grounds and see how many trucks on our property that you recognize!

For the Kids: We have a menagerie on our property and opportunities to find GOLD! Most children love small animals. We have several areas to explore where your children can interact with our “Pets”. A petting farm that houses goats with chickens, roosters and of course baby chicks in season. We also offer gold panning! Try your luck at our Sluice!

The Gold King Mine & Ghost Town

Arizona ghost town: Gold King Mine in Jerome is a hidden gem

mine tour in jerome

Arizona’s strangest museum — or maybe just its rustiest — clings to a hill high above the Verde Valley. It looks like several garages exploded. Or like the ruins of an ancient junkyard have been unearthed by archaeologists.

Shaggy, disheveled and full of history, Gold King Mine and Ghost Town has the power to captivate families for hours at a time.

Sitting a mile north of Jerome, Gold King Mine harbors an assortment of ramshackle buildings, a menagerie of friendly animals and a sprawling collection of rusted machinery that forever teeters between ruin and redemption.

More AZ mining history: Bisbee is cute, historic and an easy drive from Phoenix. Here's why it's worth visiting

What you can see at Gold King Mine in Jerome

This open-air museum preserves the clanking metal skeleton of a hardworking industrial era spread across the site. Approximately 100 vehicles line the sloping pathways.

Trucks, cars, buses, tractors, bulldozers, cranes and some conveyances that defy description are everywhere you look. These include some incredible finds like a 1902 Studebaker electric carriage, one of only two known to exist.

Tools and equipment from wrenches to chainsaws to a towering stamp mill to prehistoric washing machines that look like tubs with teeth are scattered about the grounds of this ghost town that sprang up by accident.

Gold King Mine Jerome history

In 1890, the Haynes Copper Company sunk a 1,200-foot shaft into a mountain that was practically made of copper. They whiffed. Astride one of the richest copper deposits in history, they couldn’t find the green ore.

But sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. They struck a vein of gold instead and the town of Haynes developed around the diggings.

Haynes never exactly thrived but it held on for years. It had its own post office from 1908 through 1922. Eventually the gold ran out and residents scattered. Then in 1981, this scarred slope that still wore the derelict remnants of its past was discovered by Don and Terry Robertson. It proved to be a perfect setting for what they had in mind.

Don Robertson was born on an Iowa farm, seemingly with a wrench in his hand. By age 3 he was taking apart and rebuilding his tricycle. Robertson continued his insatiable tinkering with bicycles, tractors and finally, cars and trucks, on his way to becoming a master mechanic. He developed a fascination with mining equipment and began collecting pieces that interested him.

Now with room to spread out on the hillsides above Jerome, the collecting intensified. Vintage vehicles soon joined the antique tools and mining paraphernalia. Before he passed away in 2016, Robertson used to say that he collected the things that built this country. He wanted to preserve them to honor that work ethic and sense of accomplishment.

That’s how an intriguing tourist attraction was born.

Things to do at Gold King Mine

Now run by the Robertsons' daughter, Jeannie Leffew and her husband Mike, Gold King Mine and Ghost Town continues attracting visitors from around the world. It retains some of the same appeal as Route 66, comforting and nostalgic, harkening back to simpler times.

Pathways wind among the weathered buildings and mechanical treasures spread over the terraced hillside. Original structures remain from Haynes, including a boarding house built in 1909.

Others have been salvaged from different locations and stand as furnished exhibits with creaking floors and faded signs, offering a glimpse of history. There’s a one-room schoolhouse, a miner’s cabin, assay office, town laundry, shoe repair shop, gas station and “painless” dentist office, which housed early Jerome dentists and actually resembles a torture chamber bristling with frightening instruments.

A turn-of-the-century sawmill still fills orders for new homes in the Verde Valley, cutting planks with the 1914 Witte engine powering the antique Belsaw. Watching the mill operator slicing through logs is noisy poetry in motion. The sound of the hammer rings out from the blacksmith shop where the smithy offers demonstrations, usually on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.

Yet everything comes to a halt if “Big Bertha” fires up. The massive Chicago Pneumatic three-cylinder generator dates to about 1930 and was originally used at the mine in Bagdad, Arizona. It belches flames and booms like a thunderclap when turned on, and the sound echoes down the mountain. Big Bertha is operated only by request, and has a $25 fee for fuel.

There’s also a petting zoo that includes Bella the pig, goats Bonnie and Clyde, donkeys and rabbits. Bags of animal feed can be purchased in the gift shop. Chickens have their own coop but are usually busy roaming the grounds, scratching in the dirt beneath old Packards and flatbed Fords.

Can you pan for gold in Jerome AZ?

Guests at Gold King Mine can pan for gold ($18) or gems ($12) under the guidance of knowledgeable staff.

What's ahead for Gold King Mine and Ghost Town

Don Robertson may be gone but his legacy continues to entertain and educate thousands of visitors each year. Gold King Mine provides a roadmap to a pre-internet world, one without software, just stylish hardware.

This mountain of metal is crowned by an array of metal machines — highlighting the classic architecture of vehicles built to endure with their swooping curves, rounded fenders and eye-pleasing lines.

But don’t expect shine and polish. These are not gleaming car show dandies. This fleet ages naturally in the Arizona sun, wearing a warm patina as a badge of honor. Yet surprisingly, many still run. That’s another testament to Robertson’s lifelong skill.

The Leffews continue to expand the collection Robertson started. They’re always on the lookout for donations of tools, vehicles and equipment that help tell the story of American labor. They also hope to add additional interactive experiences and possibly regular events to the property, updating while maintaining the original character.

Visitation increases each year as gearheads, history buffs, photographers and families drive up the mountain to Jerome, and then continue a mile farther to the little outpost of Gold King Mine and Ghost Town. Here, beneath the shade of the paradise trees amid a cluster of rickety buildings — where chickens cross the road but the cars don’t — time slows down. Here they can spend a few peaceful moments connecting to a rustic piece of Americana.

Gold King Mine is the kind of place that’s becoming harder to find in a fast-paced world. Nice to know it’s waiting just up the hill.

10 Best Things to Do in Jerome Arizona

Things to do in Jerome Arizona

The best things to do in Jerome can all be enjoyed in one day or just a few short hours, making a visit here well worth your time. In fact, the town was one of my favorite stops on my recent Arizona road trip.

Jerome, Arizona is a quirky little hillside town with a haunted past. The town is located just a short drive from nearby Sedona and makes a great day trip destination.

Jerome is considered the largest ghost town in the United States, and its haunted past makes the town a uniquely fun stop.

If you’re one who likes ghost town tours then this is the perfect place for you. As an old copper mining town, the city has an interesting history and learning about it makes your visit all the more fun.

This guide to the 10 best things to do in Jerome is based off my own recent trip. I hope you have as good of a time here as I did.

10 Best Things to Do in Jerome AZ

Best things to do in Jerome AZ

Jerome is located about 40 minutes southwest of Sedona or two hours north of Phoenix .

To get to Jerome you’ll need a car, though you can also take a taxi. You can also book a Sedona to Jerome Ghost Tour , which of course comes with transportation.

Once you arrive in Jerome you can easily explore the town on foot. You’ll want to set aside at least half a day and be sure to wear comfortable shoes. As mentioned above, Jerome is a hillside town, so the streets are hilly and narrow.

Don’t forget your camera as well, there’s lots to see and take pictures of.

1. Main Street

Jerome Main Street

I recommend starting off your visit to Jerome with a walk down Main Street. This is where you’ll find many local restaurants, cafes and local boutiques.

You’ll get a good sense of the town after exploring this area, as Jerome’s character is on full display here.

You’ll also come across a few of the town’s local wineries and tasting rooms (more on that later), and of course, the local saloon.

2. Sliding Jail

Jerome Sliding Jail

To be totally honest, I didn’t visit the Sliding Jail during my visit to Jerome because I had not heard about it beforehand. However, I’m including it here because it seems to be quite the attraction.

You can read more about Jerome’s Sliding Jail, but you’ll come across it if you walk down Hull Avenue which runs parallel to Main Street.

3. Jerome State Historic Park

Jerome State Historic Park

Jerome State Historic Park is located a short drive from downtown Jerome. This is where you can visit the famous Douglas Mansion, built in 1916 by wealthy mining entrepreneur James S. Douglas. For its time, the mansion was rather luxurious with its own wine cellar, billiard room, and even a marble shower.

Today, the Douglas Mansion functions as a museum where guests can learn about Jerome’s mining history and the Douglas family’s role in that industry. The museum features historical exhibits, artifacts, a restored Douglas Library, and interestingly, a model of the town that shows its underground mines.

In addition to all of the above, you’ll also get to enjoy the beautiful views of the Verde Valley from the grounds of the hilltop mansion.

If you’d like to see more of the mines in Jerome you can also stop by Audrey Headfame Park located just next to Jerome State Historic Park. At Audrey Headframe park you can stand on a glass floor over a 1,900 foot mine shaft. It’s a unique experience and worth the stop if you’re already in the area.

Douglas Mansion is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p..m. Adult admission is $7. Audrey Headframe State Park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

4. Jerome Historical Society and Mine Museum

Mine Museum

To get a real sense of what life was like in Jerome’s early days make a stop at the Jerome Historical Society on Main Street.

Here you can visit the town’s Mine Museum where you can learn about what it was like to live in Jerome back in the town’s booming copper mining days all the way to present times.

The Historical Society has a large archive of photographs, maps, and newspaper articles that tell the many fascinating stories of this unique town.

The Jerome Historical Society and Mine Museum are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Adult admission is $2.

5. Jerome Ghost Tour

Jerome Ghost Tour

If you’re planning to visit Jerome, I highly recommend joining a local tour. The ghost tours can be particularly fun, but the wild west tours and historical tours are also worth while.

Jerome is an interesting place, so if ever there was a place to join a tour, it’s here. I’ve included a few recommendations below.

  • Jerome Ghost Walk : This one hour and fifteen minute tour takes you to all of Jerome’s most haunted destinations where you can learn all about the town’s haunted past and present.
  • Wild Wild West Tour of Jerome : This is a really interesting 90 minute tour all about the salacious history of Jerome’s wild west days.
  • Jerome History Walk : This is a one hour tour focused on the history of Jerome from its origins as a tent city to a booming mine town.
  • Jerome from Sedona Haunted Tour : This is a four hour tour from Sedona with stops in Cottonwood and Clarkdale. You’ll learn all about Jerome’s haunted past and plenty of interesting facts about the town.

Whether you take a tour or not, don’t miss out on learning more about the history of Jerome as you explore the town. Knowing about the town’s history will make your visit here more fun and give you a sense of what Jerome is all about.

6. Wine Tasting

Caduceus Cellars

Wine lovers will be happy to learn that the town of Jerome is part of the Verde Valley wine region. This wine region includes the neighboring cities of Sedona and Cottonwood, among others.

Those visiting Jerome will have several options for sampling regional wines while in town.

Here are the wineries you can visit in Jerome:

  • Passion Cellars
  • Cabal Cellars
  • Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards

Hours for the individual tasting rooms vary. I recommend just stopping by while you’re in town, or you can always call ahead. Contact information can be found on their respective websites.

7. Jerome Artists Cooperative

Art in Jerome

The Jerome Artists Cooperative is a local gallery showcasing art from local artists. You’ll find all kinds of art and crafts including paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and more.

Since Jerome is an artsy town that has drawn artists of all kinds from around the country, you’ll find some pretty interesting stuff here.

If you’re looking for an easy and very direct way to support the local community, stop into the artists cooperative gallery and pick up a few unique items to bring home.

You’ll find the Jerome Artists Co-Op at 502 Main Street. They are open from Wednesdays to Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

8. Gold King Mine and Ghost Town

Gold King Mine and Ghost Town

The Gold King Mine and Ghost Town is a quirky stop located about 5 minutes outside the town.

Here you’ll find old buildings and vintage cars on display from Jerome’s old mining days. I’m unsure how much of what’s displayed is authentic and how much is staged, but it’s a fun little stop while you’re in the area.

From what I understand, the area where Gold King Mine currently sits was a former gold mine area. Apparently the miners here were originally looking for copper, but found gold instead.

The many historic structures dotting the property here are remnants from the former town that propped up when the mining began.

Visitors to Gold King Mine and Jerome Ghost Town can tour around the property and even pan for gold. I’m unsure how many actually still find gold here, but it sounds like a fun learning experience.

Gold King Mine and Ghost Town is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission for adults is $10.

9. Jerome Grand Hotel

Jerome Grand Hotel

You can’t visit Jerome without stopping at the Jerome Grand Hotel . Better yet, plan to stay there if you’ll be spending the night in Jerome.

You’ll find the Jerome Grand Hotel at the top of the hill overlooking the town. The hotel was originally the town hospital which was built back in 1926. The hospital served the town’s medical needs until about 1950 when it shut down.

After sitting vacant for many years, the hotel was purchased by new owners and converted into a hotel.

Today, the Jerome Grand Hotel is considered the most haunted building in Arizona and is frequently visited by those looking for paranormal activity. The hotels history includes multiple suicides and a possible murder, which of course only adds to the intrigue.

Guests choosing to stay the night can join one of the hotel’s ghost tours and dine at the property’s Asylum Restaurant .

If you are unable to join a hotel tour, you can also find other Jerome ghost tours here .

Rooms start at about $180 per night, though rates may vary depending on time of year.

10. Audrey Headframe Park

Audrey Headframe Park in Jerome

Audrey Headframe Park is located right next to Jerome State Historic Park.

At Audrey Headframe Park, you can explore an old mine shaft and wooden headframe. Visitors can also stand on a glass floor above the 1,900 foot shaft.

The shaft is 650 taller than the highest point of the Empire State Building and is the largest wooden headframe still standing in Arizona.

In 1918 the Audrey shaft was finished as a component of a comprehensive operational strategy that aimed to increase the quantity of high-grade ore extracted, while minimizing the risk of fire.

This is a quick visit, but a great opportunity to see the copper mining equipment up close.

Audrey Headrame Park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Hotels in Jerome AZ

Jerome Hotel

There are not many hotels in Jerome but you do have a few options. Here are my recommendations.

  • Jerome Grand Hotel : I talked about this hotel just above. The rooms are a bit dated, as is the hotel, but you stay here for the experience and the history. If you prefer something fancier, keep reading.
  • The Clinkscale : Built in 1899 but elegantly restored. This is a very nice hotel which also has a fantastic restaurant. Rooms around $225/night. This would be my first choice.
  • Connor Hotel : This is where you stay if the other hotels are booked. The hotel is dated but rooms are nice enough for one night.

For a bit more variety I recommend staying in Sedona. You’ll find everything you want and more at the hotels there.

I hope you enjoyed this guide to the 10 best things to do in Jerome Arizona and that I’ve inspired you to plan a visit of your own. As always, thanks for reading.

Jerome AZ - A Cliff-Side, Mining, Wine-loving, Artist, Ghost Town

Americans, Mexicans, Croatians, Irish, Spaniards, Italians, and Chinese made the mining camp a cosmopolitan mix that added to its rich life and filled its streets with excitement. Prehistoric Native Americans were the first miners. The Spanish followed, seeking gold but finding copper. Anglos staked the first claims in the area in 1876, and United Verde mining operations began in l883, followed by the Little Daisy claim.

Jerome grew rapidly from a tent city to a prosperous company town as it followed the swing of the mines' fortunes. Jerome was the talk of the territory...boom town of its time... the darling of promoters and investors. The mines were nourished and exploited by financiers who brought billions of dollars of copper from its depths.

Changing times in the Territory saw pack burros, mule-drawn freight wagons, and horses replaced by steam engines, autos, and trucks. Fires ravaged the clapboard town again and again. Jerome was always rebuilt. In 1918 underground mining was phased out after uncontrollable fires erupted in the 88 miles of tunnels under the town. Open pit mining brought dynamiting. The hills rattled and buildings cracked... the surface began to shift and sections of the business district slid downward. The sliding jail moved 225 ft. and rests across the road from its original site.

Dependent on the ups and downs of copper prices, labor unrest, depressions, and wars, Jerome's mines finally closed in 1953. Will it be forever? Jerome never knows. Jerome has always been a survivor. After the mines closed and " King Copper" left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 20s to some 50 persons in the late 50s. A few hardy souls remained, reluctant to leave a lifetime of memories.

The 60s and 70s were the time of the counter culture and Jerome offered a haven for artists who renovated homes and opened abandoned shops to sell their wares. Soon newcomers and Jerome's old-timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements. The Douglas Mansion became a State Park in 1965 and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in l976.

Today, Jerome is alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. They form a peaceful, colorful, thriving community built on a rich foundation of history and lore.

What Not to Miss When You Visit Jerome, AZ

1. jerome state historic park.

The Douglas Mansion has been an eye-catching landmark in Jerome since 1916 when James S. Douglas built it on the hill just above his Little Daisy Mine. This former home is now a museum devoted to the history of the Jerome area and the Douglas family. The museum features photographs, artifacts, and minerals in addition to a video presentation and a 3-D model of the town with its underground mines. There are more displays outside along with a picnic area offering a beautiful panoramic view of the Verde Valley.

2. Vist the Mine Museum & Explore Jerome's Mining History

The Mine Museum gives visitors a sense of what the Jerome community was like, with exhibits dedicated to the schools and emergency services as well as the town’s seedy underbelly. The initial mining claims in Jerome were staked in 1876 and William Clark soon after constructed a railroad line and turned Jerome into a boomtown. The company was later sold to Phelps Dodge who ran the mine until operations ended in the 1950’s. It is estimated that through the years millions of tons of copper, gold, silver, and other heavy metal ore were mined in Jerome, giving the town one of its nicknames: Jerome, the Billion Dollar Copper Camp.

3. Jerome’s Sliding Jail

Just below Jerome, AZ's Visitor’s Center is Jerome’s Sliding Jail Park. It is one of this town’s many curiosities. The town jail began relocating itself during the 1930s, sliding slowly downhill and resting at various locations until it landed in its current spot, 225 feet from where it started. It is presumed that the combination of Jerome being located on the Verde Valley fault and having 88 miles of excavated tunnels beneath the one square mile of town has caused the jail to find itself resting in different parts of town over the years.

4. Go on a Ghost Tour

Guided ghost walks and tours tell stories of Jerome’s most notably haunted locations. Some tours attempt to make contact with spirits of the sordid past while telling stories of those whose mortal remains lie beneath your feet. Look for tours that are supported by the Jerome Historical Society for accurate information that is obtained through the JHS archives.

5. Jerome Wine Tasting

Pleasure your palate with some of northern Arizona’s most popular wines such as from Caduceus Cellars owned by Maynard James Keenan of the band Tool, Echo Canyon Winery, Bittercreek Winery, and Jerome Winery. Many winery tours also leave from Sedona and hit some of the best vineyards in Verde Valley including Page Springs Winery, Alcantara, and others.

6. Visit the World’s Largest Kaleidoscope Store

You must visit Nellie Bly Kaleidoscopes, billed as the world’s largest kaleidoscope store. This shop is located on Main Street in the former brothel operated by the notorious town madam, Jennie Bauters. This is a “please touch the merchandise” store where the people who work there are happy to show you how to operate the different styles of kaleidoscopes and even help you take your kaleidoscope selfie!

7. Check Out the Old Cars and Bikes

You may choose to enjoy tastings or bottles of award-winning wines. You will receive discounts for tastings and bottles of wine, at some of the wineries. Also, we are the only tour company that allows you to bring your own alcoholic (or nonalcoholic) beverages with you on the bus. At one of the wineries, we will have a picnic, outside next to the grapevines or inside depending on the weather. The picnic is served on linens, includes a personal charcuterie board. This includes French bread, gourmet cheeses, hard salami, olive oil with balsamic vinegar, grapes, nuts, and chocolates, for each individual person on the tour. At one of the award-winning wineries, we will be touring the production facility and barrel room. There we will discuss the wine-making process and what it takes to make a cluster of grapes into an award-winning bottle of wine.

This is a must visit when in Jerome. Its not at all far from the town and it seems to be that you can spend all day here exploring. The road to get there is bumpy and dusty and there is free parking out front. We arrived later in the day and unfortunately we weren't going to have enough time to explore it all so we opted to not pay to get into the grounds. We were able to visit the gift shop though and we spent about 45 minutes there. The gift shop had many cute things and it was hard not to buy it all. The aisles are a little narrow and so we had to be careful not to knock anything over. I will definitely be back again soon and actually have enough time to explore the grounds.

Went here and drove through the whole lot. Lots of antiques and very old stuff. It looks like a scary move scene up in here not going to lie. Shacks made out of old wood looks like they're going to collapse. A bunch of old trucks like a junkyard. Pretty cool spot to take pictures there's a gift shop which is cool. Didn't do anything much besides that, but interesting place to say the least. If you ever seen wrong turn this is identical to some scenes in that movie, pretty cool! You'll enjoy!

It's kinda exactly what you think it is... almost like a junkyard of relics but it's also kinda fun to wander around and look at all the items. You could probably come here 100 times and see something new each time. You pull into a gift shop where you pay to enter the outdoor collection. They have an old mine entrance that actually connects to a bunch of tunnels below, it is fenced off and you can't access it but it's cool to see. They have a lot of animals wondering: chickens, a Turkey. They have goats and a pig enclosed in fences and this was the highlight for me. They are all pretty friendly and not bothered by people. The gift shop had some unique items and other gift shop-y souvenirs. It's located really close to the downtown Jerome area so it's just a few minutes off the beaten path.

Great stop to check out! Saw lots of antique trucks, buildings, etc. so much history! You can buy animal food to feed the chickens, turkeys & goats. You can pan for gold and gems also ($). Would definitely recommend!

We just had a terrible experience. We paid 140 to get in and then waited at the gold panning for 15 mins for a guide. Since no one arrived we decided to pan ourselves. My son was having a blast then the worker arrived and was so rude. She embarrassed my 11 and 14 year old. The front did the right thing and refunded the 2 kids but the entire area is not worth the fee. I do not recommend!

I saw this little place on Facebook. My family was all mechanics when I was growing up so I absolutely love old vehicles and bonus I love ghosts/old towns. Visited here as we were waiting for our hotel room check in. I think it is a hidden gem! Even saw a car like my Dads yellow coupe with his fave number 39 on it! Made me tear up. There was a very nice gentleman there that chatted with us about some history. It's not fancy and you are on your own. I was super excited there was a petting zoo I didn't know beforehand. I could've spent hours there but temps got to be triple digits. Cute gift shops with nice ladies. Some raw history here! Worth a visit!

If you are looking for something big and showy I wouldn't say this is the place for you. If you are interested in history and the story and relics that go along with that history then you will have a great time. The entire area looks dilapidated and run down but that is part of its story. Many of the original buildings still stand with some of the items still inside. Truly a treasure trove for a history lover. There is a spot where you can "pan for gold or gems" but you have to pay for that in the gift shop where you also pay your entrance fee. They also sell small bags of food that you can feed the animals. We had multiple people in our group ranging in age from 8 to 50 years old. We all enjoyed it. My one warning is that there are a ton of wasps that fly around.

The ghost town and mine were pretty cool, but I'm more so writing this review to make ownership know that upon exiting and walking to our car my husband and I saw a dog, then a man who was chopping wood down the road, drive up and stop to get him (which was a relief), until he started hitting his dog, dragging him around by his neck and throwing him in the vehicle. I said something to this man, and he just responded that it was his dog and he could do whatever he wants. Normally I would have called the police, but in the area we were in, I was doubtful we would get a response. To the people running the place, get rid of this guy ASAP.

Photo of Margie H.

Amazing place full of old mining equipment and history of the past. If you love old vehicles and history do stop here. The cost is so worth it. They have clean bathrooms. They let you wonder around the very big area by yourself. They lady working there told us the history of the owner who is now passed but I loved his vision of this attraction. A must stop and kids will love the animals.

A winter storm leaves much needed snow in the historic town of Jerome Arizona..jpg

Jerome Ghost Town

Before the mine closed in 1929, Jerome was a bustling and wild city of over 15,000 people. It was where fortunes were made and then suddenly and with out much forewarning a total collapse. It is still considered to be one of the wealthiest and wildest cities in the Wild West. In 1929 when the stock market crashed, the mine went bust, plunging the population to about 500 people almost overnight. In the 1950’s, Jerome was nearly deserted except for 2 hermits living in the ruins.

Today, Jerome has made a remarkable come back with a bustling arts community, spectacular scenery a collection of eccentric shops and wine tasting rooms. The evidence of Jerome’s mining days is everywhere. Giant pieces of equipment lay on the hillsides preserved by the dry arid conditions, while a new culture is thriving in its ashes.

WILD WILD WEST

Journey into the past as we unveil Jerome’s salacious wild west. The rise and fall of the worlds largest copper mining town, to famous figures such as Billy the Kid, the infamous murder of Brothel owner Belgian Jenny and the reign of the Cuban Queen.

Jerome captivated the minds of entrepreneurs looking to strike it rich and rebel outlaws alike. One such rebel was Billy the Kid a young outlaw who earned his ranks before the age of  21 and inspired the movie Young Guns portrayed by Emilio Estevez . Over run with miners, boozes, gambling and riches the ladies of Jerome took a piece of the pie as well. Home to more brothels per capita than anywhere else in the country, Jerome made its mark for more than just copper and gold. Folks, this is the real wild wild west where the law could be disputed with a sleight of hand hand and 6 shooter.

ABOUT JEROME, AZ

Jerome, Arizona was founded in 1876 by early prospectors who filed the first mining claims on a rocky outcrop called “Cleopatra Hill”. These claims were in the rough back country referred to as the Black Hills of  Central Arizona.  A prominent New York lawyer, named Eugene Jerome, started what was to become one of the largest copper mines in the west. Mr. Jerome, however, never set foot in our town. His wife, Paulina Von Schneidau Jerome of Chicago, bankrolled his dream of being a mine owner, and thus named the town for her husband in 1882 and the The United Verde Copper Company was born.

Just a few years later, in 1888, one of the richest men in the world, William A. Clark from Montana , bought the United Verde Copper Company and started to build.  He built railroads, telegraph lines, smelters, roads, hospitals and schools. As the town of Jerome grew, even churches sprung up in the rough and tumble mining town!

Now, In the new millennium, Jerome still clings precariously to the steep slopes below Cleopatra Hill, 5000 feet above sea level. Its resurgent population has brought the town back to life, which features artists, musicians, interesting shops, wonderful bistros, sophisticated art galleries, hotels, B and B’s, fresh air and one of the best views in Arizona! In 2012, Jerome was nationally voted one of the “Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America”.  There’s no place quite like Jerome, Arizona.

Join one of our tours and hear the many fascinating tales of “The Wickedest Town in the West!”

About Jerome, Arizona

The mining years.

The mile high town of Jerome is built on the side of Cleopatra Hill and sits on what was once a huge deposit of copper, silver and gold. In the 1870’s mostly Irish immigrants were staking out claims in the Black Hills looking to strike it rich. Immigrants from around the world eagerly came to work for the mining companies between 1883-1953. The town became a melting-pot of different nationalities, all looking to earn a living for their families.

Jerome is rich in overlapping history of the Verde Valley and in its importance to the State of Arizona. We think you’ll agree that taking a historic tour with us is fascinating and fun!

THE GHOST TOWN YEARS

Plummeting copper prices caused the UVCC mine to be closed in 1953. The Little Daisy Mine/UVX closed in 1938. The towns population dropped to a mere 100 residents in the 1950’s. A far cry from 15,000 people in 1929.  The vacant buildings and houses attracted artists from Arizona in the 1960’s. Late 1960’s and early 70’s ‘Hippies’ from Arizona and California began moving to Jerome, they succeeded in revitalizing the town, and turned it into the unique destination it is today.

Jerome, Copper Mines, Smelting and History with a Twist

Ken, our guide, was just what we wanted. He looked the part without having to be made up. He spoke the language of the area, and was deeply familiar with the history of the town, Ken knew his stuff, was ready with photos of the people and places, and had a warm sense of humor. He knew it's people both former and current. This was the history tour, so we learned about Senator Clark, who owned the local mine, and his daughter Huguette (oo-Get) by Anna, his second marriage. We visited Mine Heads, stood in the 4 person elevator that carried men into the dangerous tunnels. Don't worry. We did not go down into the hole We saw the effects of landslides, since Jerome is built into the side of a hill. having been there before, we realized how much we missed doing our own walking tour. This tour was one of the best we've ever been on. The bus was comfortable - lots of windows and beautiful vistas. There were many stops at various points of interest and spectacular views. We were in and out of the bus several times. We had about two and a half hours to eat and discover the shops. Fun stuff. Couldn't wait to learn more about W. A. Clark and his daughter. Ken suggested a recent book published in 2013 or 14 "Empty Mansions". Got it from our library. What a story.

We have gone to Jerome before, but this trip was the best. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a full history of this beautiful, quirky, interesting old mining town nestled in the mountains above Sedona. We had plenty of time for lunch and shopping in what is now primarily an artists community. Our guide was a terrific storyteller, and Jerome is full of amazing stories. Do not miss this treat!

We took the historic tour and the haunted tour. We learned a lot about the town and its history and had a lot of fun. The guide had a lot of knowledge and we enjoyed the experience. Recommended.

I first spoke with Gary to gather some more information about the “Jerome Haunted Tour”, he was friendly and informative and worked with me on a last minute reservation for myself and a friend. Our guide was Jane, she is amazing and shared so many stories about Jerome's history during the tour (very very interesting) – she’s a fantastic guide. We were all provided with flashlights, EMF devices and divine rods to aid in our hunt for the paranormal. These added devices really helped in allowing us to feel connected/close to nearby ghosts. I really enjoyed myself tremendously and will suggest this tour to anyone looking for something fun to do! Be sure to bring a camera with a full battery!! Thank you Jane!!

The location is wonderful, hugging tightly to the mountainside, giving great views to the valley below. Get a tour guide from the visitor center, so you can appreciate your walking tour. The place attracts a lot of tourists and there are numerous gift shops to browse through and it's just a pleasant stroll around. It's worth finding out about the history of the huge copper strike and the vast wealth that created the town in the first place..

We were given wrong information about the start time of the evening tour. (That's for another review). So, thinking the tour was at 8 pm, we arrived in Jerome about 5 to find the office locked. Someone in the building told us he didn't think there was a tour as they had "left early". We called just after 5 and left a message, and called more times. By 6:45 we had given up and were eating dinner. Then they called and told us we were too late for the 7 pm tour. So we booked for the next night. BE THERE AT 6:45!, we were told. So we were there. And then we sat around until 7:20 when the other people wandered in, chatted, used facilities, etc. We could have made it the night before for a 7:20 start time! The tour ended at 9. So it was not 2 hours. The content and the "orb" stuff, I leave for other to review.

Hi Peach, We are so sorry there was some kind of miscommunication about the start time of our tour, but our tours have never started at 8pm: the latest they ever start are at 7pm. Normally we do start the tour at 7pm, but if we have Folks that get lost on the way and are going to be a little late, we try to wait for them, as we would for most Clients, and that's what happened that 2nd evening. We apologize that you had to wait for the other clients, but normally the guide starts an introduction to the tour in the office, whether all are present or not, so the walking portion doesn't happen immediately. We're not sure about the missed phone calls, but sometimes the cell reception is not good leaving Jerome, so we suspect the missed calls were because of this. Again we apologize for any inconvenience this caused you.

mine tour in jerome

This former mountain mining community earned the nickname “The Wickedest Town in the West” during its heyday, when rich copper ore deposits attracted miners, merchants, madams and more to Yavapai County.

More than a century later, Jerome's rough-and-tumble spirit has been tempered but not completely tamed, which helped the town narrowly escape a fate that befell many others that fell to ruin after their linchpin mines closed. Today, Jerome is known for being a hillside destination for visitors eager to discover more about the Verde Valley’s mines, wines, fine arts and spectral spirits. This town serves up its history with a side of humor: There’s still a Bordello on Main Street, for example, but the modern incarnation is meant to sate guests’ appetites for burgers only. Read on to discover more about what to enjoy on your visit to Jerome.

Vintage shops

Downtown Jerome’s streets and stairways wend past several tasting rooms and bottle shops that showcase the viticulture of the Verde Valley. At least a half-dozen offer curated lists of wines or ciders, available by the glass, flight or bottle. Jerome’s restaurants tend to include at least one local brand on their menus, too.

Exceptional exhibitionists

It’s not exaggerating to say that artists and craftspeople saved Jerome. The town’s former high school, for example, houses the Jerome Art Center, where more than 30 artists rent studio space. Throughout town, galleries are tucked in former houses and storefronts, showcasing furniture, photography, fine art, jewelry and more.

A haunting good time

The catastrophic fires and violent deaths from the town’s early days have led to Jerome’s “ghost town” status. Over the years, there have been several accounts of ghosts and apparitions that roam the town’s historic buildings and neighborhoods. Evening ghost tours and spirit walks introduce visitors to the local hotels, houses, hospital and high school that former residents are said to haunt.

Dig deep into the history of Jerome

The copper mines may have closed, but they’re by no means forgotten. Just above the former Little Daisy mine, what once served as the Douglas family mansion has been converted into the museum and visitors center for Jerome State Historic Park , which contains displays, demonstrations and tours related to the town’s mining boom. And throughout Jerome, placards share the history of both ruins and remaining buildings, inspiring renewed appreciation for the renaissance the town’s residents have been able to craft themselves. Turns out, all that rough tumbling revealed the gem that had been lying underneath all this time, ready to shine once again.

The museum is evolving from pure mining to demonstrating the people who made Jerome what it is.

Madonna with kids David, Mercy, Estere and Stella

Madonna is proud of her children for working hard as performers in her ongoing Celebration Tour.

“I think what my children learned the most in this year of rehearsing and performing is that if you want to follow your dreams, you have to work hard for them,” the pop superstar, 65, said in an interview with W magazine published Wednesday.

“And if all of them choose something different later in life, they will never forget this year of blood, sweat, and tears.”

As Madonna prepared to hit the road for the concert series — a spectacle that honors her four decades in the spotlight — she tapped her four youngest kids, David, 18, Mercy, also 18, plus 11-year-old twins Stella and Estere, to showcase their unique talents on stage.

Madonna

“Because the Celebration Tour is a retrospective of my life, I thought it made perfect sense to include all of my children still living with me in the show; they all dance and play musical instruments, and have been doing so for years,” the “Ray of Light” singer told the publication.

“David has played guitar since he was a child. Mercy has played piano since she was 8 and she’s been classically trained most of her life. Eventually, when I adopted the twins, they started to play piano and dance as well.”

Madonna noted that there is “always an endless parade of dancing and [performing arts] teachers coming and going in our house,” so it only made sense to give her children a bigger platform to shine on the Celebration Tour.

A show highlight for the Grammy winner is when daughter Mercy accompanies her on piano during a powerful rendition of her 1993 ballad “Bad Girl.”

“I saw a strange, poetic juxtaposition of hedonism and exploration emerging into the light of Mercy, sitting stoically at her grand piano playing Chopin as she beckoned me towards her, making me think about the choices I have made in my life,” Madonna said, explaining how that specific moment came to be.

“Singing ‘Bad Girl’ was kind of my confession to her, and I felt we had an unspoken understanding of what was happening.”

Meanwhile, David duets with his mom on “Mother and Father” from her 2003 album, “American Life.”

“‘Mother and Father’ is one of my favorite moments in the show because it gave me a chance to not only honor my mother and her memory but also to honor David’s mother and her memory,” she said of the young creative, whom she adopted from Malawi in 2006.

“He has always wanted to sing and play guitar. He loves being on stage — this is nothing new. Much of the show is about motherhood, family, and the importance of that in my artistic life.”

As for Stella and Estere, the girls dance their hearts out when Madonna sings her 2000 smash “Don’t Tell Me,” and also during a section in the show that pays homage to ballroom and the art of vogueing.

“While Estere was learning how to DJ, she became interested in ballroom competitions. Just by luck, one of my choreographer’s assistants, Ivy Mugler, has her own ballroom house called House of Mugler,” she says of how the two became interested in that sect of dance.

Madonna and others onstage

“She started taking Estere aside during rehearsals to another room—and within a couple of weeks she was doing death drops and spins and surprising us with her ability. So, of course we had to turn that section of the show into Estere’s Ball.”

Madonna is also mom to Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 27 — whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon — and Rocco Ritchie, 23 — whom she shares with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. Her eldest have also participated in her tours, including 2012’s MDNA Tour, for which Lourdes worked in the wardrobe department while Rocco performed on stage.

“I have always been blessed with children who are interested in music, dance and art. Starting from the top with Lola, who was not only an incredible ballet dancer and a rhythmic gymnast, she also switches to musical theater and contemporary dance,” she said.

Madonna with her kids

The eternal hitmaker acknowledged that “nothing brings [her] more happiness” than collaborating with her kids.

“It would be boring if they were just traveling from hotel to hotel, and occasionally coming to watch the show,” she elaborated. “Of course, I am their mother so sometimes we get on each other’s nerves. We are a family of artists but we are also a family, and that’s what happens.”

The Celebration Tour’s next stop is Friday in Mexico City, followed by a final — and free — show in Rio de Janeiro on May 4.
