This was my 3rd visit to Goa, and everytime I used to stay in North Goa near Baga beach. But this time I decided to give South Goa a try, as their beaches and the water are supposed to be cleaner. The location of this resort is good, about 15kms from the Goa Airport, not too far in the South. The rooms are excellent, although I think they were a bit dimly lit. The Staff is excellent. I was there with my parents for my birthday, and they gave us a complimentary birthday cake. :) Would like to give a special mention to Niushka at the reception desk. We arrived way too early before our check in time, but she got us accommodated in our rooms in no time. She was very friendly. All the staff are really nice people. The resort is located close to the Uttorda beach, which is nice and clean. There is only one more resort connected to the beach, so its not really crowded, which I liked it. The Swimming pool is amazing, has a pool bar, and looks amazing in the night with the blue leds inside it. Although i wished the Jacuzzi was bit more powerful :) The Breakfast buffet is one of the best. Try to get a deal which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, since I didn't like much the a-la-carte menu. They have 2 more bars inside, and the beers are priced at reasonable rates. Although I went in monsoons, and all the water sports was closed, It was a peaceful vacation for us, a perfect getaway. I would rate it 8/10, because I wished they had a bar and a restaurant at the beach, even in monsoons, which is what most people would love it. If you don't have your own car here, then you would probably have to take taxi from outside the hotel, since there is no other public transport available. The Taxi rates from this hotel are bit more on the high, 3500 Rs for 80 kms with 6hrs of cap. and 4000 Rs for 120 kms with 8hrs of cap. But hey its Goa, a touristic place, so it will be expensive everywhere :) Overall a perfect getaway place. And if you're lucky you might even spot few bol

our stay at royal orchid was really memorable. we were greeted in typical, warm goan style by the welcoming party. a short wait ensued after which were shown to our club room. we had a nice view of the pool and the neatly manicured lawns. the room itself was good value for money. a recce of the property subsequently resulted in the discovery that the public majorda beach was a short walk away from the resort. additionally, there are a number of shacks on the public beach right behind the resort (recommend you try rosary shack because the food is great and reasonable but better are the warm goan couple and their son who own the shack). the staff at royal orchid were damn helpful when we were planning our getaway for the next day by means of a roadtrip on a hired scooterette. water sports are offered at the stretch right behind the resort and majorda too. i had an exhilarating jet ski ride but couldn't go parasailing due to lack of wind. the only negative at the hotel was the food (lunch and dinner) which was limited in spread and overpriced. however, that is where the shacks come to the rescue. all in all, a great place to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the public beaches and experience the goan vacation.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my family. the staff is very helpful. pros: swimming pool, beach front property. staff. Italian restaurant. cons: rooms are old fashioned. the resort boasts five star facilities but there was serious man power shortage especially in room service and restaurant. All Day Dining restaurant is having very few options for vegetarians. dinner buffet costs 1750 per person which is too costly. how can they improve? - by keeping more staff. - rooms need upgradation. - room service should be quicker. I had to call 3 times for a simple request. - Kids play area should be bigger considering it's a 5 star resort. they only have a small room.where only 4-5 kids can play. we also stayed at least Meridien calangute during our stay, and their kids play area was way better, bigger... all in all, you should book this resort for it's beach front location, and swimming pool- which was the best part of the resort.

Swimming pool

Everything was excellent, Thanks god I choose to stay in Cottages, they were the best part of my stay. Heard a lot negative comments about the breakfast but all Crap the breakfast was All GOOD. Staff was well trained.. Will recommend it my friends and my next stay in Goa will also be Alagoa for sure

Breakfast spread was really nice, room was tidy and big enough for family of 3. Resort has a lovely clean pool, they arranged some games for the guests which was good and gave us an opportunity to socialize with other guests. Easy 3 min walk to very clean and beautiful beach a must visit during Sunset to sit back and relax. They have a pub with great ambiance where you can enjoy few glass of cocktails or wine before dinner. The spa was also nice and relaxing. Overall it was one of the best holiday for us. Cheers!!

Rent a car and Drive to all major beaches which are maximum at 60 minutes drive and nearest Best-being Colva which is at 15 Minutes easy drive. Both Majorda and Utorda beaches are under 5 Minutes Drive and are good to visit for sunrise walks and jogs, If you are looking for a property with a view then probably this is not the best choice. But if you want a central hub which is safe, gated for your kids has a pool and activities then it is the place. Rent a 1 BHK , you get a proper kitchen with maintained utensils.

We arrived to vermin droppings on a dirty bedcover, musty room and a toilet with disgusting toilet seat and bowl, mold on shower curtain and a wet floor. We asked to be moved. We were upgraded to a suite BUT the same..a filthy pillow, dirty sheets and filthy toilet and shower. We had to bundle the bedding and take it down to managements. We are not fussy people..but the rooms never get cleaned. Two boys to clean the large resort. Walls filthy etc. Seriously it is a health hazard.

JES Guest House

aggie, the hotel owner greeted us on the day of arrival with a care package of kingfisher and bottled water. later that evening he personally drove us to a beautiful restaurant which was well withing walking distance. he was a very friendly guy who did his very best to make us as happy as possible and he was successful in that regard. each morning a chef by the name of singh made us a delicious breakfast of your personal choice. he also offers a bbq dinner service which is very affordable comparable to any nice restaurant in the area. he cooked us red snapper and tiger prawns caught in the ocean which rests only two minutes from the hotel that morning. each day after breakfast we made the 2 to 3 minute walk to the beach, where nice sand and water met us. the stay was great, i highly recommend it. i may be back in the future.

Shangrila Beach Hotel

Majorda beach is very quiet except in the peak tourist period; big wide clean beach with a few restaurants/bars, good swimming with some small waves. Room had everything I needed, including satellite TV for before bedtime. If you like low key, clean, a few tasty local restaurants, nice wide beaches, this could be your spot. Place pumps Dec tru Feb..

On the other side we stayed in a tent which was quite moldy, it had mosquitoes, flees from all the dogs roaming arround and spiders. I felt there with more than 100 bites in 3 days, even though they gave us a bug spray when asked. I would not have reviewd this place on the minus side because the people were really very nice. But then I woke up in my last morning there to find that my ipod, which was on the table in the tent, was gone. Someone on the staff stoled it. The owner checked the cctv and was kind enough to offer to compensate me and he gave us a lift to the bus station when we left. I am not saying don't go there..if you want to, go, there are some nice people you will meet, but please be aware that at least one person on the staff is a thief and pay extra care with your personal belongings.

We have stayed at Golden Sands many times before but have booked through their central booking office and didn't realise that we were booking an apartment that was not part of this scheme. This apartments these people rent out (E3 and E4) are way below the standard of the other apartments. The apartment was very dirty, covered in dust and thick grime on the doors, windows etc. The air condition wasn't working in the bedroom and there was no internet. We complained to the owner and the apartment was cleaned the next day but we were asked to pay for the cleaning. We refused and on each subsequent day the cleaner returned asking for her money. The resort is lovely but if you come here make sure you do not rent these apartments. The other apartments also come with free cleaning, bed changing etc which we didn't have with this one.

TGF Dream Guest House

Beach is only 10-15 min away and it’s a lovely walk. There’s two restaurants right next to the guest house. We preferred the one called Camaron’s, great food and staff very friendly. We initially booked to stay here for 2-3 nights, we loved the guest house and Majorda so much we stayed for 7 nights!

Essential South Goa Travel Guide

Discover the Best of Peaceful South Goa

goa tourism hotels in south goa

South Goa is like North Goa was decades ago, with relatively pristine beaches and minimal development. If you want to escape the ever-growing crowd and commercialization in North Goa, and have a relatively laid back vacation, you'll love it there. Accommodations consist mostly of luxury hotels, heritage villas, and cottages on the beach. Plan your trip there with this South Goa travel guide.

Getting There

Depending on your budget, there are various ways you can reach South Goa. The most convenient way is to fly to Goa airport and then take a prepaid taxi from the arrivals hall. Depending on how far south you want to go (Patnem beach is usually the limit for most people), it will be a drive of up to an hour and a half (expect to pay an 2,000 taxi fare for this distance). The main railway station in South Goa is called Madgaon (Margao). It's on the Konkan Railway line and is commonly reached by train from Mumbai. Margao is 40 minutes away from Patnem and the trip costs about 1,000 rupees in a taxi. The bus from Mumbai is another inexpensive way of getting to South Goa, albeit a less comfortable one.

Where to Stay: Luxury Hotels

The majority Goa's luxury hotels are located in South Goa, particularly in the vicinity of Varca, Cavelossim and Morbor beaches. These fishing beaches are clean and unspoiled. The most popular luxury hotels are the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa , Zuri White Sands , ITC Grand , The Leela, Alila Diwa , and the Lalit Golf and Spa Resort near Patnem beach in the far south.

The Mayfair Hideaway Spa Resort is a serene boutique riverside option at Betul. It's a 10 minute boar ride along the Sal River to Morbor beach.

A stay at The Postcard Cuelim , inland from Cansaulim beach, combines boutique luxury with heritage and local culture. The property is part of an innovative new hotel chain that was founded by the former president of the Oberoi Group, and focuses on authenticity and flexibility. It has eight rooms in a glorious restored Portuguese mansion with a 350 year-old chapel. You can check-in and check-out any time you want. Breakfast is served all day too. Activities include heritage walks, cycling, and Ayurveda.

Where to Stay: Secluded Beach Views

If you're looking for an intimate and secluded getaway, a couple of options stand out. Paradise found is the first thing that comes to mind at Dwarka Eco Beach Resort on Cola beach (not to be mistaken with touristy Colva beach) about 20 minutes north of Agonda. The stylish cottages are among the best you'll find in Goa. They're set amid a sprawling palm grove that borders a lagoon and the ocean. The property is reached via a private dirt road and is idyllic as it sounds.

The Cape Goa fits the bill for somewhere more luxurious. It has nine gorgeous sea-facing cottages built into the side of the cliff near Cabo de Rama fort, about 20 minutes north of Cola beach. The cottages all have their own private Jacuzzi.

Where to Stay: Heritage Villas

Turiya Villa

Turiya Villa is a stunningly restored 100 year-old Goan villa in Canacona (Chaudi) town, near Patnem and Palolem beaches. It has two wings: the original heritage villa with five rooms that open onto the patio, and the new wing with three rooms that open out onto the garden. The villa is an ideal place to stay if you're traveling with family or a group of friends, as the whole property can be booked.

Vivenda dos Palhacos has a delightful village setting only a few minutes from the beach in Majorda. Nostalgic, intimate, and eclectic, it's perfect for discerning guests who want to experience a different side of Goa. Oh, and there's a swimming pool too!

Where to Stay: Environmentally-Friendly Concepts

Sharell Cook.

One of the top places to go glamping in India , you can stay by the Galgibag River in a chic tipi at La Mangrove south of Patnem. There are four tipis on the property, and they're really comfortable. Attached bathrooms have composting toilets and open-to-the-sky showers. Delicious global cuisine is prepared by the in-house chef.

The Tribe Goa is a collective of individuals that has come together to build an off-the-grid forest village for creative people to meet and live amid nature. They've transformed a huge derelict former cashew plantation into a thriving, self-sufficient jungle with guesthouse, vegetarian cafe, and music venue. It's located inland from Agonda beach near Leopard Valley.

Also in the same area, Khaama Kethna is another jungle haven that's been turned into a holistic well-being retreat center with yoga, organic food, healing therapies, and workshops.

Bhakti Kurtir, on a coconut grove near Palolem beach, is a similar concept. Its eco-friendly cabanas are made out of natural materials, and there's an Ayurveda center and yoga.

Best Beach for Chilling Out: Agonda

John Harper/Getty Images

If you're keen on simply relaxing and doing nothing, Agonda beach is the place! It's still fairly quiet and undeveloped. This long stretch of beach extends for nearly two miles, so there's plenty of space for everyone! Inexpensive accommodations are available in simple beach huts on the sand. Read more in this Agonda beach travel guide.

Most Happening Beach: Palolem

Ben Pipe/robertharding/Getty Images

About 10 minutes south of Agonda beach, Palolem is South Goa's most picturesque and happening beach (although don't expect a lot of action because South Goa just isn't like that!). Colorful coco huts and shacks are clustered under the dense palm trees that line this semi-circle shaped beach. Silent Noise Parties are held every Saturday night at Neptune Point, at the southern end of the beach. Read more in this Palolem beach travel guide .

Bit of Both: Patnem

Five minutes south of Palolem, Patnem offers a blend of entertainment and relaxation. This small beach, nestled between two cliffs, is a wonderful place to stay if you want to chill out but not be too far away from the nightlife in Palolem. Sometimes, there will be live music in the beach shacks at Patnem. There are a few popular yoga centers there as well. Read more in this Patnem beach travel guide.

Best Secret Beach: Galjibag

Sharell Cook

About 15 minutes south of Patnem beach, little-known Galjibag beach is a protected Olive Ridley turtle breeding site that remains refreshingly untouched and free of any permanent structures. There's hardly a soul on this long stretch of beach, thickly lined with Casuarina trees. The handful of shacks at the southern end of the beach serve fresh seafood from the nearby river. Read more in this Galjibag beach travel guide .

What to Do: Explore Old Portuguese Mansions

If you're interested in Goa's Portuguese heritage, it's possible to go inside some magnificent old mansions that have been restored and are open to the public. There are quite a few of them in South Goa, and you can spend a day exploring them. You'll find them in Chandor (the Braganza House), Loutolim (Casa Araujo Alvares) and Quepem (Palacio do Deao). They display a treasure trove of historical memorabilia and you'll feel like you've been transported back in time. Find out more about Goa's Portuguese mansions .

What to Do: Visit Goa Chitra Museum

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

Learn about Goa's traditional farming lifestyle at the unique Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim. It was privately set up to showcase and preserve the agrarian way of life, and has more than 4,000 artifacts on display. Many of them are old farming tools and equipment, as well as other implements including kitchen utensils. You can see them in use at the functional organic farm next to the museum. There's also a separate section, Goa Chakra, with about 70 antique carts, carriages and palanquins from across India. Interestingly, the museum was built using repurposed doors, windows and pillars from more than 300 demolished traditional houses. Tours are conducted every hour. Tickets cost 300 rupees per person.

What to Do: Hot Air Ballooning

Goa Tourism

Tiger Balloon Safaris, in conjunction with Goa Tourism, conducts daily early morning hot air balloon flights over South Goa from mid October to mid May. The flights depart from Chandor and cost $190 or 11,000 rupees per person.

Where to Eat: Top Goan Cuisine Restaurants

Fish curry and rice are ubiquitous in the beach shacks. However, if you're willing to venture further inland, you'll be able to feast on scrumptious Goan cuisine at some memorable restaurants. Martin's Corner , near the Alila Diwa hotel in Betalbatim, is perhaps the most famous one. It's been in business since 1989 and grew out of a corner shop with just a few tables. Seafood is the specialty, and it's flavored with family-made spices. There's live music Sundays and most nights.

Head to the Fisherman's Wharf, by the banks of the River Sal in Cavelossim, for seafood and Goan fusion cuisine in an upmarket setting.

In Margao, South Goa's main city, Martins is a stylish option for Goan and global fare. It's closed on Tuesdays though. A bit easier on the wallet, Peppers Gourmet Cuisine is recommended for traditional Goan food too.

Chef Fernando's Nostalgia, at the late chef's heritage mansion in Raia village just north of Margao, is renowned for its classic Portugese-Goan dishes that are rarely served in restaurants. The place really comes to life Thursday through Sunday, when bands play at night. There's karaoke on Wednesdays.

If you're visiting the old Portuguese mansions, book a day in advance to have lunch at Palacio do Deao (from 11 a.m to 3 p.m.). There's no menu or choice of dishes, apart from vegetarian or non-vegetarian. You're guaranteed to get an authentic homemade five-course meal though, featuring produce from the owner's garden. It's special.

Our stay at capella was the best part of our recent goa....

Our stay at Capella was the best part of our recent Goa holiday! We frequent Goa couple a times in the year but for the very first time in all these years we were drawn to staying mostly at home than stepping out. Ayesha's home built in true Portuguese style reflects the warmth she welcomes her guests with. It's rare to find a BNB that boasts of an experience that treats you with a swimming pool, view of the hills, spacious & well decorated rooms, zillion books for those who enjoy reading, privacy, closer to all the happening hang outs and in North Goa. It takes you away from all the noise at Baga, yet close enough to feel the Goan vibe. Highly recommend this place as one of the best BNB's in Goa and will go back for a longer stay. Check it out and experience the warmth and beauty of Capella!

We wanted to avoid the crowded beaches in the calangute-bagha strip and so we chose to stay in Panaji. The streets and restaurants were thinly populated and food options were great in Panaji. Since it was centrally located, it was easy to go to north and south part of Goa.

Missing good Goan restaurant.

Missing good Goan restaurant. Stay away from Quarterdeck restaurant. Worst food and service. Staff is busy watching IPL. Chef should have basic training about how to dry the fish. City is very crowded due to Casinos.

A lovely small township in South Goa, within 8 kms from Madgaon railway station, Betalbetim has a number of hotels. It is also fringed with a beach on it's West side, part of the very popular South Goa beaches. There is also located here the well known eating place - Martin's Corner.

Vagator is one of the serene, peaceful and less crowded...

Vagator is one of the serene, peaceful and less crowded places in North Goa. Little Vagator Beach also called the " Ozran" beach is a much less explored that the Vagator beach. So if you are in an exploration and relaxation mode, chill at Little Vagator ( Ozran Beach). There are couple of shacks from where you can get some beer and chill Going around is a bit difficult unless you have bike. Getting shared taxi or Cab is not too easy, but you will get quite a few options over the weekend. Best way to commute is Scooty. The Vagator beach is walk able though, and the walk from the Jungle Hostel to the beach after sunset is quite serene. Walking to and from the beach at night is quite relaxing and less strenuous. But yes for going to thalassa you might have to look out for option from beforehand, if you donot get a scooty as the walk is quite long and the roads are quite empty during off season. while coming back from Thalassa you will get many options of booking a cab as there is a Taxi stand just outside thalassa, The fare to reach Vagator should not be more than INR 300 at night ( Aorund 11-12). The nearby beaches are morjim and Anjuna. The must try places are Thalassa, Mango tree, Our shack ( Ozran Beach ), Lucky shack ( Ozran Beach).

I ve stayed at the karma royal palms through trip thrill. Was a great experience. Good for long walks. The food is amazing at hide out and brilliant. Do drink a lot of coconut water to avoid dehydration in goa.

If you're going off-season(monsoon) then staying in Arambol should be avoided as most good restaurants here are shut till october and the beach has more garbage than people. Blue sea view restaurant had a good view of the sea and decent goan food, did not try other cuisines. Service was quick but unprofessional. Food quality was not consistent.

If you want peace and relax near the beach.

If you want peace and relax near the beach. This is a perfect place. Not for the folks who want to party. For Fun and party North Goa, Penjim is best.

Hotel is nicely located close to many restaurants and also on walking distance to the beach. Rekha in the reception is very helpful and available and acted quickly when on arrival the bedsheets and towels were not clean, when the A/C stopped working, when the water was missing one day, and also assisted with moving around in Goa. She really keeps the hotel together.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, and they're all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff are and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

An Eater’s Guide to Goa, India’s Sunshine State

G oa is one of India’s most popular tourist destinations. The southwestern Indian state, which is split into northern and southern districts along the Konkan coast, welcomes millions of visitors from other parts of India who party the night away with affordable booze. Known as India’s Sunshine State, the area is also a favorite for foreign tourists, who frequent resorts, guesthouses, and beach cabanas, lured by the state’s sun, sand, and susegado, the Goan version of the laid-back life. Local food businesses have responded in kind. Walk along the famous stretch of beaches between Candolim and Baga, and you’ll encounter North Indian dishes like palak paneer or dal makhani, restaurant brands imported from major Indian cities, and Western burgers. Goa’s incredibly diverse, flavorful cuisine rarely makes appearances in the buzzier areas.

But Goans nurture a deep love for their food, evident in everyday meals (like little touches of pickled fruits) and special occasions (like the 16-layer egg-and-coconut cakes that appear around Christmas). Locals tie together recipes, ingredients, and kitchen know-how from Portugal, South India, and other parts of the world, creating a culinary legacy that often goes overlooked by tourists. Across Goa, you’ll find a vivid mix of breakfast joints, roadside carts, generations-old taverns, and contemporary resto bars, all proudly contributing to Goa’s culinary narrative.

There are opportunities to escape the tourist circuit in the capital, Panjim (also known as Panaji), as well as the coastal towns, islands, and inland villages. After just a few meals, you’ll know why Goa is one of India’s most underrated food destinations.

What’s the food in Goa like?

Although small in size, the state has a layered cuisine from centuries of power shifts. Hindu royal families and Muslim dynasties ruled Goa before the Portuguese arrived in 1510. The Portuguese colonized the area for about 450 years and heavily influenced culinary traditions in the process; many dishes and desserts still have Portuguese-derived names. Goa also acted as a center of trade with Arab merchants and other territories of the Portuguese empire, like Japan, Indonesia, and Mozambique, bringing in spices along with textiles, horses, and other goods.

Goan food largely relies on locally grown rice and seafood like Bombay duck, mackerel, kingfish, pomfret, mussels, and prawns. The coconut palm is especially important; it’s used to produce palm jaggery, scraped coconut meat, vinegar (commonly used to add sour notes to dishes or pickle produce), and coconut milk that thickens stewy vegetable curries like khatkhatem.

In terms of meat, chicken, lamb, and beef appear often at Goan celebrations, but pork is king. Although there’s a common stereotype that pork carries a stigma across India, the pig is integral to many Indian cuisines, including Goan, where every part of the fattened animal is put to precise use. The state’s cuisine also makes use of abundant spring and summer produce, like cashews, mangoes, jackfruit, and kokum.

Key terms for food lovers

Pao and poee.

Ask any Goan and they’ll tell you that local life is deeply tied to pao (Portuguese for bread): puffy, square-shaped, golden-crusted rolls. Baking has a long, nuanced history in Goa running back to the mid-16th century. In her book Cozinha de Goa: History and Tradition of Goan Food, Fátima da Silva Gracias explains that Portuguese missionaries taught European techniques to one of the communities in coastal Majorda in southern Goa; from there the knowledge spread across the state and up the northwestern coast of India.

Traditionally, dough was fermented with sur (palm wine), adding a fluffy texture, though most bakers use yeast today. Freshly baked pao makes a great pairing with curry or an omelet. There are also other types of bread, like the popular poee, a hollow discus of leavened whole-wheat bread. Across Goan villages, you’ll still find a poder (breadman) on his bicycle delivering freshly baked pao and poee to every house.

A member of the mangosteen family, kokum is a tropical fruit that grows wild in the forests along the Konkan coast. A common souring agent in the region, the sun-dried outer flesh of the fruit is also boiled to prepare drinks and cooling condiments.

The assortment of dishes in a lunch thali varies across India according to region, community, and class. In Goa, a thali typically comes with rice, coconutty and tangy fish curry, vegetables, solkadhi (a cooling coconut milk and kokum drink), and a choice of spicy, fried fish or prawns. Some Goan thalis also include kismur (a condiment combining coconut with fish or dried prawns), pickles, and traditional desserts like bebinca (layered cake).

You’ll often see fish rava fry or prawns rava fry on restaurant menus. A common way to prepare seafood, this involves marinating fish with chile powder, turmeric, and salt before coating items in a thin layer of rava (semolina) and shallow frying them for a delightful, subtle crunch. Rava is also used for frying potatoes, okra, and eggplant.

Long before the Portuguese arrived in Goa, locals were making feni, a colorless, aromatic spirit originally derived from the sap of the coconut flower. When the Portuguese introduced cashews to the state, many distillers switched to cashew apples for their base. Today, feni is so strongly associated with Goa, the state received a geographical indication (GI) tag for the drink, a mark of quality. Feni is usually enjoyed neat or with Limca (lemon-lime soda), but you’ll also find bars making creative cocktails with this heritage spirit. Homegrown brands like Aani Ek also sell artisanal feni infused with chile, lime, or honey and cinnamon.

Chicken, beef, lamb, crabs, and chickpeas all get slow-cooked in xacuti-style curry. A labor of love, this dish combines ingredients like dried Kashmiri red chiles, poppy seeds, peppercorns, and coconut meat, along with other herbs and spices, all sauteed and pounded to make a spicy, aromatic gravy. Xacuti is usually served with rice, but leftovers are also great drizzled over an egg omelet.

Much like the ubiquitous rava fry, recheado fish fry or recheado masala shows up on a lot of Goan menus. Recheado is a red spice blend prepared with Kashmiri red chiles and herbs. This marinade is usually stuffed inside or coated on a fish before it’s shallow-fried.

A hot, sour, vinegary curry commonly made by those living along the Konkan coast, sorpotel traditionally features pork meat and offal including heart, liver, tongue, and blood. It’s mostly a ceremonial dish, prepared for special days like Christmas and weddings, when it’s served alongside sanna (soft, steamed, rice-flour discs).

Where to eat in Panjim, North Goa, and South Goa

Confeitaria 31 de janeiro.

This 1930 Goan Portuguese bakery is located in a tiny alley in the Fontainhas neighborhood of Panjim’s Latin Quarter, tucked among the vibrant houses sporting red tiled roofs and picturesque porches. Grab one of the outdoor tables — covered with azulejo ceramic tiles depicting scenes of Goan life — to people-watch with one of the bakery’s prawn rissois (cheesy, prawn-stuffed, half-moon patties) and other classics like Swiss rolls and chocolate-rum balls. Come early for the bebinca, Goa’s famous, pudding-like layered cake (believed to have been first made by a nun in the 17th century), which is golden brown, eggy, and sweet.

Since 1913, Goans have made the multiple locations of Tato synonymous with a quick snack, tea, and breakfast. Staples include a range of vegetarian bhaji, like the sukhi (a dry potato dish), onion and tomato salad, mushrooms, or cowpeas. Each dish comes with a choice of puri (deep-fried whole wheat bread), pao, or fluffy, deep-fried banana-wheat buns dusted with cumin (like you might find in Mangalore down the coast).

Kokni Kanteen

Indian tourists from other states flock to this little restaurant, which continuously hums with Konkani songs. You’ll definitely have to line up for the lunchtime fish thali, the restaurant’s most famous dish, which includes fried kingfish, mussels, dry prawns, and a lightly spiced fish curry, served alongside rice and other items like solkadhi.

Smack dab at the heart of Panjim, Bombil is a love letter to the small joints that once dotted Goa. The no-frills restaurant with vivid, yellow walls serves food inspired by owner Joseph Dias’s upbringing, especially the simple food cooked by his grandparents. Look for favorite bites like semolina-coated fried lepo (sole) or go for the daily lunch, which includes white rice with mango pickles, bombil (dried Bombay duck), and sorak (spiced, tangy coconut gravy known as “spinster curry” since it doesn’t include meat or fish). The menu also features kalchi kodi (day-old sorak eaten with hot pao and a fried egg) and more elaborate dishes, like a thali with kingfish that was part of the Sunday feasts of Dias’s childhood.

The Local Table

Dining at the Local Table feels like visiting old friends. The casual atmosphere adds to the warm welcome from chef Gaurish Madgaonkar and his wife, who run the place with help from their young daughter. The restaurant’s menu is a world apart from the North Indian style dhabas (roadside food stalls) catering to tourists along the busy Candolim Beach Road. Try the rava-coated silver pomfret, which is shallow-fried on a low flame, or the crab xacuti. Wash down your meal with a refreshing glass of kokum soda.

Once a sleepy little village with colonial-era residences, Assagao is now nicknamed the Beverly Hills of Goa for its fancy cafes, luxe boutique hotels, and fine dining venues. For a pocket-friendly option in the area, head to Sabor. Goan co-owner Jack Gerald opened the charming cafe in 2022, serving local snacks with modern twists (like roasted pork sandwiches on poee). With paned windows and indigo walls, it almost feels like a slice of Portugal in Goa.

While Brahmins across India are generally known to be strictly vegetarian, the coastal influences are evident in the fish dishes of Goa’s Saraswat Brahmin. Though the cuisine is rarely seen outside private homes, Shubhra Shankhwalker wants to promote the cuisine to a wider audience while honoring century-old recipes from her community. Set in a farmhouse in North Goa, Aayi’s — meaning “mother’s” — serves an experiential, hyperlocal, multicourse menu. Shankhwalker uses handpicked ingredients from local markets and fishmongers to make dishes like kalundarche hooman (pearl spot fish curry) and adsarache pole (tender coconut dosa with garlic chutney).

Susegad Anjuna

This incredible, little food truck in Mazal Waddo is just a 30-minute walk from the famous Anjuna beach. Everything here is home-cooked and perfect for a quick, affordable evening snack. While there are several meat-stuffed poee on offer, the winner is clearly the truck’s choris pao: poee stuffed with Goan pork sausage (originally influenced by Portuguese chouriço) that’s spicy and tangy with vinegar.

Home-Made Goan Fish Curry

Tucked away in a small dirt road far away from Anjuna’s buzz, this small, confusingly named restaurant gets busy at lunchtime, when people pile in for the fish thali. Order the rava fry prawns, grab a chair beneath the tin roof, and dig in with locals who prefer to keep this place a secret.

Monte Carlo

If you want to go where the locals eat, head to Monte Carlo. The family-run place in the village of Betalbatim offers Goan classics like pork jeerem meerem, a spicy, tangy gravy made with herbs like cumin, peppercorn, turmeric, and green chile, flavored with tamarind syrup, tomatoes, and vinegar. Look out for the tora shiro, pickled mango slices served alongside mains.

Mon Petit Frère

A tiny, open-air bakery, coffee shop, and brunch spot with rustic interiors in Colva, one of South Goa’s famous beach areas, Mon Petit Frère is one of those unexpected gems you find during a Goan holiday. Famous for breakfasts and Sunday brunches of Western-style eggs, crepes, pancakes, and falafel burgers, the cafe also serves house-made sourdough loaves, chocolate almond banana muffins, cinnamon buns, and handmade pasta dishes. Go for coffee and stay for the basque cheesecake that’s developed a cult following.

Ulhas is a gaddo (street stall) specializing in ros omelet. Your choice of spicy chickpeas or chicken xacuti curry is drizzled over a fluffy omelet, topped with chopped onions and coriander leaves, and served with fresh pao and a lime wedge.

Kausar’s Biryani

Perhaps the best place for biryani in all of Goa, Kausar’s offers homestyle chicken and mutton dum biryani (layers of rice and meat slow-cooked in a large pot). There are also other popular Indian dishes like butter chicken; Mangalorean chicken ghee roast marinated with spices, curry leaves, ghee, and jaggery; and desserts like sheer khurma (sweet vermicelli pudding) prepared by Muslims during Eid.

Cavatina by Avinash Martins

At his Benaulim restaurant, renowned chef Avinash Martins serves Goan food with a contemporary twist, including a modern take on Indigenous Goan food and highly seasonal produce. Check out the spanakopita made with Goan tambdi bhaji (red amaranth) and cashew butter; or go for Martins’s toranja starter, a local pomelo tossed with onions, cilantro, cucumber, mint, dried Bombay duck, and a tangy, spicy dressing of chiles, tamarind, and jaggery.

The best places to drink in Goa

For the record.

India’s first vinyl bar, founded by audio engineer and jazz musician Buland Shukla, this Panjim hangout has a curated list of craft cocktails made with native spirits like feni and seasonal ingredients like amaranth. The bar’s impressive food menu focuses on different types of fermentation.

No guide to Goa is complete without this iconic space, where time has little meaning. Frequented by locals, Joseph is an old bar with rustic decor and space for about 15 people. Grab a draught beer and sit down for a chat with Prabhakar Azagaokar — known simply as Gundu — Joseph’s iconic, always-smiling barman, who’ll whip up anything you like.

Villa 259 Taproom & Cocktail Bar

This tap room is fancy, like everything else in Assagao. Set in a charming old, renovated Portuguese house with plenty of private nooks, the restaurant and bar serves modern European food and great cocktails named after Goa’s iconic tourist spots. There’s live music on the weekends.

The Flying Goat

The Flying Goat not only does great coffee and cocktails using local ingredients, but it’s also an incredibly peaceful spot to while away the time with an extensive book collection. Full of houseplants, friendly dogs, and soulful music, it’s dreamy and intimate, particularly during monsoons.

Patnem Chai Shop

One of South Goa’s oldest shops for chao (the Konkani term for chai), Patnem is a go-to place for samosas (deep-fried patties stuffed with spicy potatoes, peas, and meat). With images of Hindu goddesses flanking the vintage pink walls, this iconic place is run by friendly folks who welcome a mix of foreigners and locals.

A cute little bar reviving the tavern culture in Goa with a contemporary twist, Feli occupies a spot in the beautiful village of Benaulim. The cocktails pay homage to Goan traditions, incorporating ingredients like coconut feni and mango. The watering hole also pours craft beers from Susegado, Goa’s first microbrewery.

The best food tours and experiences in Goa

Make it happen.

Homegrown tour organization Make It Happen conducts whisky distillery tours, feni and tapas hours, and food trails through Goan towns, all of which make ideal introductions to local cuisine. Go for the Margao Food Trail, which explores local markets, breadmaking, and dining at a heritage restaurant. Tours start at $30 per person.

Soul Travelling

One of Goa’s leading tour organizations, Soul Travelling stands out by offering curated culinary tours that explore various aspects of Goan cuisine, like home-cooked Saraswat Brahmin meals. Go for the Chorao Island tour, which gives you a chance to explore Goa’s largest island and cook dishes with local families. Tours start at $23 per person.

The Local Beat

Founded by Goan Mackinlay Barreto, Local Beat goes beyond typical tourist experiences to explore Goa’s charming villages. All tours include food experiences, dipping into what Goans eat on a typical day depending on the season, like kelyachyo fodi (spicy, rava-fried banana) and urrak, the first distillation of the cashew apple extract (a second distillation produces feni). Contact Local Beat for curated tours and prices.

The best hotels in Goa for food lovers

Ahilya by the sea.

With only nine tastefully designed rooms set across three villas, Ahilya by the Sea sits on a secluded spot by a bay in Nerul, a picturesque village in North Goa. Known for his table d’hote fine dining, chef Jason Pereira serves Indian and Goan dishes, like a rava fry prawn thali, in a charming setting. Aside from two pools shaded by frangipani, the Arjun’s Tree House room, nested in a 200-year-old banyan tree, is particularly stunning. Rooms start at $744 in the peak season.

MansionHaus

This 300-year-old luxury hotel in North Goa’s Anjuna sports chic, white interiors, a communal courtyard, and a veranda dimmed with moon lighting. It’s also particularly great for hungry guests, as it hosts suppers with traveling chefs from across the world. Though the menu changes often, it always features fresh, organic ingredients from the Goan coast and nearby farms. Visitors can join curated cooking classes or private food and wine pairings hosted by the chefs. Doubles start at $230 during the high season.

Casa Menezes

Suites start at $85 during the high season.

Alila Diwa Goa

High-ceilinged corridors, reflective pools, and charming courtyards full of mango trees effortlessly blend in with the surrounding lush rice paddies at this 118-room luxe Hyatt resort in South Goa. The hotel restaurant, Spice Studio, encircles a majestic banyan tree and serves homey dishes from India’s southwestern coast, like the Thalassery Kozhi Biryani from northern Kerala, in which rice and chicken are cooked separately and later layered in a large pot. Be sure to sip one of the Courtyard Bar’s kokum-infused martinis. Rooms start at $200 during the high season.

Hugging a rocky clifftop in Cabo de Rama, one of South Goa’s more dramatic seascapes featuring crags and coconut palms, this 14-acre eco-resort by the Arabian Sea is ideal for a relaxing getaway with daily yoga and meditation. The resort sources some ingredients from its own organic garden, while fish and grains are sourced locally for seasonal menus. Goan and other Indian cuisines are on offer, including tisane (tea) made from garden herbs. Rooms start at $230 during the high season.
