lydmor tour 2022

A non-stop, dedicated artist, the singer truly braces herself for a new adventure with every project, excited to test her abilities and strength as a vocalist and writer (Photo provided via Lydmor and Heartbeat Management).

Artist Spotlight: Lydmor is up for any musical challenge

“Guys get away with so much bulls--t in art” is a mantra that Danish electronic artist Lydmor fully believes in her newest single, “LSD Heart,” which dropped recently on Aug. 5. Unlike her intense bass-bumping releases in the past, this new track sees the singer stripping down, evolving into a fresh musical perspective.

Yet, most wouldn’t know that Lydmor has been around for the last 10 years, nor would they realize a single woman stands behind the stage name. Jenny Rossander has always been unpredictable, laying low in the music industry but always releasing music at the right time.

Her first major release to streaming services didn’t come until 2014’s She Moves (Acoustic EP). With only three songs total, the EP actually serves as a predecessor to Rossander’s return to acoustic pop music, a compilation that was delicate while still showing potential.

Yet, Rossander wanted to stabilize her stage persona, challenging herself to make a bigger project. For the next year, Lydmor would grow and produce its first album, Seven Dreams of Fire. In this project, listeners saw the singer document her own trials with love, admitting to how vulnerable she could make herself for someone else.

The album was seen as a monumental stepping stone for Lydmor, allowing them to further expand on the previous themes of love, loss and acceptance. Thus, two years after her debut came a sophomore project, Y.

Y allowed Rossander to explore herself as not just a musician, but as a woman, too. From reflecting on her perception of beauty to envisioning a new and improved version of herself, the album was a sucker punch of emotions that proved Lydmor’s strength as a writer.

Taking a two-year hiatus after dropping back-to-back albums, Lydmor dove into a narrative world with I Told You I’d Tell Them Our Story. With 12 tracks total, the album took listeners on an emotional ride as they watched Rossander describe a relationship that once thrived. A rather bold transition from her previous two albums, it put the singer’s imagination on full display, her creativity a clear indication of her musical talent.

In a press release on her creative motives, Lydmor said, “I knew I had to create music without the possibility of hiding myself behind layers of sounds and endless editing. I needed something real with room for everything that’s beautiful, unpleasant, intimate and free. It was a frightening but necessary process to me that instantly developed into a no break kind of get-mad-or-die-trying session of hugging and fist fighting myself.”

These motives eventually caused Rossander to take another three years to develop her fourth album, Capacity. With an electro-pop sound that was worlds apart from her starting work, the singer earned the attention of major film companies in Denmark, causing her to drop a follow-up track, “The Last Call” for the critically acclaimed Danish film, Venuseffekten .

The song was awarded Best Song at this year’s Robert Awards, the Danish equivalent to The Oscars. Now, Lydmor is gearing up to release another album in under a year after surprising listeners with “LSD Heart” last week.

Nimue is shaping out to be a more acoustic, organic project where Rossander integrates sounds from nature into her music. Listeners already will feel like the singer is there with them as she bares her soul yet again.

The album will be accompanied by a fall tour, but nobody can ever tell what Lymor has up their sleeve. A non-stop, dedicated artist, the singer truly braces herself for a new adventure with every project, excited to test her abilities and strength as a vocalist and writer.

Lydmor (Denmark) – LSD Heart (single from forthcoming album Nimue)

On the surface and by her standards Lydmor (say ‘Leeth-myur,’ it means ‘Mother of Sound’) has been quiet since the release of her fourth album ‘Capacity’ 18 months ago but in reality the uncompromising enigmatic Danish bundle of energy has been anything but.

Her many personas include those of producer, dancer and DJ, also as a composer for theatre, music hall and film, much of which she has successfully completed over the last few years but some of which she did not, as a direct result of the intervention of our old foe Covid, which locked her in her Copenhagen apartment for what was too long for her own good.

These compositional activities bring her to exotic places such as the Cannes Film Festival (see photo), and she wins international awards for them, too. As with any musician who operates across the arts spectrum there is always the danger that they will slip away from the routine of writing, recording and performing songs when such opportunities beckon, possibly never to return. I thought that about Anna Calvi on several occasions, an artist not dissimilar from Lydmor in her sometimes outrageous stage persona, especially when she got to write the score for one of the BBC’s most watched dramas, but fortunately she seems to be gravitating back towards writing and performing her music.

Similarly with Lydmor – but then something very interesting happened last December.

She went to Oslo to play the final show of a long-awaited European tour but it was hit by Covid. Determined to finish her tour, she sat by the piano at the venue and played a fully acoustic concert to the audience. The next day she was supposed to fly home to Denmark for Christmas and the New Year but instead booked a studio on a remote Norwegian island and went back into isolation “to create music without the possibility of hiding myself behind layers of sounds and endless editing.”

Reading that takes me back to April 2020, her incarceration and her seemingly everlasting online soc med concerts and fan sessions in which she wrote, built, rebuilt and rewrote new songs with their help. It probably saved her from going mad, but the real catharsis came with this solo session. Just Jenny Rossander and her piano.

It also reminds me of this skill she has, of being able to write the most explosive electronic synth-loop bangers you’ll ever hear from a solo artist (and perform them accordingly) and, in complete contrast, the gentlest, most poignant piano ballads you’ll hear this side of the Pearly Gates. I’ve seen her reduce adults to tears with them, I kid you not.

The island retreat resulted in a new album, ‘ Nimue’ . I’m not sure what it is about. Nimue is a night moisturiser (which I can personally recommend, darlings). It’s also the name of the protagonist in ‘Cursed’, an American fantasy drama web television series on Netflix. And of course in Arthurian legend it is the name of a sorceress, also known as the Lady of the Lake, Vivien, or Niniane. Now that would be so Lydmor.

This lead single from it is ‘LSD Heart’ and if you’re thinking that she’s released that song before you’d be right; as a single and on the ‘Capacity’ album. Indeed, I’ve seen her perform it live and reviewed it. This one is an acoustic remake and the tracks on the album will embrace other remakes, new songs and even some covers. (I hope there might be some Fiona Apple on there; I think she’s covered some of her songs in the past. Maybe a Highasakite track or two as she seems to like them. We’ll see)

If you like feminist songs (and she is one, par excellence, even going on Danish national radio to debate mano a mano with a hard talking misogynistic music critic) ‘LSD Heart’ is right up your street, dealing with male domination of the arts and personal preferences for modern living and loving in the same stanzas.

I didn’t think the original could be improved upon much but just like Apple she can deliver the same song in a different fashion every night as you’ll see and hear later.

In this version she has both toned it down to acoustic basics and jazzed it up with changes of pace, key and tone, adding some of her enchanting little semi-classical meandering piano runs.

The introductory bars alone take your breath away as she somehow manages to channel ELP’s ‘Take a Pebble’ , overlaid with the haunted screams of the demon-possessed Regan MacNeil in ‘The Exorcist.’ Is it a coincidence or did she mean to do that?

And the vocal is more sensuous than on the original; lushly evocative.

The end result is something that is both delightful and utterly excoriating and acidic at the same time. There are few artists capable of that.

The saddest thing to me is that unless there’s a serious radio edit you’ll never hear this on the BBC as you should be doing. ‘Piss’ and ‘bullshit’ alone will see to that, and as for “ I don’t come when they blow me” that would send the governors into such a state of shock they’d have to lie down.

Here is the track and then, as a bonus, there is a video of the way she performed ‘LSD Heart’ at the Reeperbahn Festival in 2019. In that version watch for her facial expressions and listen to the way she spits out the words “sexual abuse.” Both are pure Apple, an artist of whom I’ve said since the very first night I encountered Lydmor that she has the capacity (pardon the pun) to be spoken of in the same breath.

The release of ‘Nimue’ will be followed by an acoustic tour this autumn but it won’t include the UK, again. I’m hoping that she and her management will revise their position on touring here before long

After that, only she knows.

LYDMOR & BON HOMME: „When we go on stage, this crazy thing happens“

Lydmor & Bon Homme interview Munich 1

The new year just started few weeks ago. It started a bit slow and as usually – in the first few weeks it is not very clear yet where the new year will lead us. But what could be better for getting back on track and starting into a 2017 full of Danish music, than kicking it off with the most exciting duo that Danish music scene offers at the moment? That’s what we thought! Luckily before watching the fulminant Munich show of Lydmor & Bon Homme on 14. January we also had the chance to sit down for a little pre-show-talk with them.

Curious what they are up to and how their latest Germany tour went? Then take a look at our interview with Jenny and Tomas.

Lydmor&Bon Homme interview Munich

GbD Author Simone in talk with Lydmor & Bon Homme in Munich

Good because Danish: Today is your last day of the Germany tour, how did it go so far?

Jenny: It went very good.

Tomas: Funny thing is, to be honest, I have even considered cancelling the tour. Mainly because this is our third tour in Germany. The first one was the “get-into-it”-tour, the next one was so that more people showed up than expected. And then we set up one more tour and then we got a bit afraid if we should better stop it because we have no new releases. But I am very happy we didn’t cancel it. Because just out of a sudden, people started buying tickets and we have had full houses till now.

Jenny: It was packed every evening. Nice surprise. Berlin was especially awesome.

As you mention Berlin, we heard that you have a very emotional relationship with that city. Now you are in Munich, so we are of course curious about your relationship with Munich?

Tomas: I have a strong relationship to Munich. My whole German career started in Munich as WhoMadeWho’s first label was Gomma, which is Munich-based and my first successful German concert was in Munich’s club Registratur, ten years ago. So, I have quite strong feelings for Munich. I have played here many times. It seems to me like Munich has quite a strong club scene.

Talking about being on stage – do you see any differences when being on stage as Lydmor & Bon Homme, compared to being on stage as solo-act or as part of WhoMadeWho?

Jenny: For me it is very different, yes. When I play as Lydmor I play all alone. And it is much more personal and also somewhat more cozy. It feels more “this is me and my things”. But then Tomas has this forceful and strong presence and it shows in his music. Therefore, the music we make is more dramatic and I get to be more dramatic. And I love to be dramatic. This is exactly the thing with me and Tomas which has been there from the very first time. When we go on stage, this crazy thing happens. We play around and it is just there. It just seems we complement each other stage wise, I think.

Tomas: Yes, I think so, too. For me it is also two very, very different things. Bon Homme has always been my softer outlet for the more melodic part of my musicality. It has always been the part that doesn’t fit into WhoMadeWho, because the band always consisted of three people and we have our own common space. But there is a big part of me that doesn’t fit in there, but it fits perfectly with Jenny. So, there is a big part of me that I get to live out here. Another important thing is, that I have been a bass player since forever and now not playing the bass at a concert is fun. And sometimes, with Jenny, we also use a drummer now, so I can just stand there and be a singer. This is very different. I think now, with Jenny, it is a warmer musical sound, with WhoMadeWho it is definitely way more macho. So, this is very different, in a very inspirational way. Playing with Jenny is like my soft place and for her it is maybe more her disco place – so we meet in the middle of a staircase where Jenny comes from a very emotional side and me from a very macho side. And the great thing for me is also, that especially after this tour, I have the feeling that I am part of something that evolves into something. Everyone can make an album, but actually going on a tour, meeting people who bought tickets to see your show and they listen to your album and know your songs – that gives you the feeling that it is not just you nursing your own ego. That is very important and I am extremely thankful for that. With WhoMadeWho the community with the fans started already years ago. Seeing that unfolding in the project with Jenny now again is very nice.

Yes, we also think it is very visible in your shows that you really click with each other on the stage.

Tomas: Yes, we have a very good chemistry. So, I am super happy to have both. WhoMadeWho has been going on so long and it is very safe, like it can’t go wrong. With Jenny, it is much more fragile, which is a good thing. I am really happy that I can have both, as otherwise I might miss something, but I have both and that is really perfect.

Jenny: I am also super happy to be out there with this project.

When talking about touring together, do you also have different routines when touring solo or with WhoMadeWho?

Jenny: Actually, I don’t have a lot of routines.

Tomas: This is a bit different – with Jenny it is more like sleeping in band apartments, while with WhoMadeWho it is more sleeping in fancy hotels. But we also have different routines when touring together. Jenny, for example, parties later. She is younger than me. I have been touring for decades and I just can’t party every night anymore. Even if it is actually an honor that people come to celebrate with you and you even feel bad if you can’t do it every night, but for me it is so that I can’t do that every evening anymore.

Jenny: I always tell myself I won’t party so long tonight, but then after the show I am so hyped up as it is always so nice to play and it gives you an adrenaline kick, you know.

Tomas: You have so much beautiful energy and are also so outgoing when meeting people and coming to a venue, which is nice.

Talking about the audience, do you see any difference between the Danish and the German audience?

Tomas: To be honest, no – it is kind of the same. I can see differences when you play, for instance, in South America or in Spain. But in general I see differences in the audience, depending on how well they know the band. Like if they come to check out a new band or if they really know the songs and when they bought the album and so. But otherwise no, Danish fans go also crazy, just as German fans.

Jenny: I think so too. I see big differences with the Asian audience for example because they don’t interact so much during the show, they are mostly watching. But there are not so many differences between German or Danish crowds.

This tour is coming to an end now, but do you already have an idea about your next steps together?

Tomas: Our next step is that we focus on our own stuff again. Actually, we just finished a new WhoMadeWho album. So, for me it means I am going to tour with the band for the next 1,5 year. Then I will slowly start making a new album with Jenny again.

Jenny: I have to finish my solo album still. I am in the process of finishing it, but it is not completely done yet. But yes, we are doing kind of separate things now for a while and then we will come back to focus on this project again. This is going to be interesting, as already slowly conversations are starting about what kind of album we want to make next.

Tomas: Yes, this is especially interesting, as this actually really just started out as a one-off. Then we decided to make one album. But then we saw what happened. For me, this last tour and also quite successful gigs in Denmark and Switzerland made me think that this really makes sense. Because, you know, you make a lot of music, but then if no one listens to it, it’s just stupid. But after this I think, that it makes sense to make another album. So, we are looking forward to it.

But this means also that you won’t play together for a while now?

Tomas: Yeah, we are not going to play concerts together for some time.

Jenny: Yes, this night is actually the last one for a long while. But I feel this tour is definitely a nice way to end this for a while.

One last question – if you look at the Danish music market. Is there anyone you are especially interested in at the moment?

Jenny: I am really excited about a band called Farveblind . They just released their first single yesterday. I was so lucky because I saw their first concert and they are really young. But I’ve been following them since then and I think they are growing into really cool producers. I am pretty excited about that.

Tomas: Kenton Slash Demon . That is the only one. It just sounds really good what they do.

For all of you, who can’t wait to hear new stuff of the unbeatable duo Lydmor & Bon Homme, still treat yourself with some of their greatest songs from the last album:

lydmor tour 2022

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

A Gentleman In Moscow Cast & Character Guide

Ewan mcgregor's historical drama weirdly copies his 2022 star wars show, the deeper meaning behind a gentleman in moscow episode 3's bees.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale of A Gentleman in Moscow.

  • Count Rostov finds family, love, and purpose in his confinement at the Metropol Hotel, despite his initial imprisonment.
  • The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow remains ambiguous, leaving Alexander's fate open to interpretation.
  • Love and sacrifice are the central themes of the show, as Alexander risks everything to ensure the safety and happiness of his found family.

The ending of A Gentleman in Moscow brings with it the conclusion of Alexander Rostov's story, with his 35-year stretch of imprisonment inside Moscow's Metropol Hotel coming to a halt. After returning home from Paris in 1918 to save his grandmother from the violence of Russia's Bolshevik revolution , Count Rostov is sentenced to life imprisonment for his status as a member of the nation's ruling class. However, instead of being locked in a prison cell, Ewan McGregor's character is confined to the walls of a luxury hotel in the nation's capital.

Alexander's is spared execution, unlike so many of his other social peers. The reason for the leniency is Alexander being incorrectly credited with a poem titled "Where is our Purpose Now?" The literary work, actually written in 1913 by Alexander's old friend, Mishka, was partially credited as inciting the Revolution. The count manages to carve out some level of existence for himself at the Metropol , with the novelty of his situation quickly wearing off. Along the way, Alexander Rostov finds the family he'd never had before, giving a man who'd lost everything something else to lose.

The Paramount/Showtime limited series A Gentleman in Moscow is led by Golden Globe and Emmy winner Ewan McGregor and his wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

What Happens To Alexander Rostov After He Leaves The Metropol Hotel Explained

The post-escape fate of mcgregor's character is unknown.

At the end of A Gentleman in Moscow episode 8, "Adieu," Alexander dons his hat and strolls through the doors of the Metropol Hotel. After all the phones in the building ring at once as Richard Vanderwhile's signal that Sofia is safe, Alexander can depart while knowing his surrogate daughter is in trusted hands. While Alexander is shown successfully leaving the building , the other side of the door isn't shown, so it's impossible to confirm what happens to the Count after this scene. Even the show's narrator, an older Sofia, confirms that she never knew what her father did next.

"I discovered that Papa had escaped the hotel, but what happened after remains a mystery. I like to imagine [Alexander and Anna] finally free, living out the rest of their lives together. They gave me the greatest gift of life. I'll keep them in my heart. Always. "

The sequence that's shown of Alexander's reunion with Anna in "Adieu" is shot in the same 4:3 aspect ratio as A Gentleman in Moscow 's flashbacks sequences, which were often from Count Rostov's point of view. However, as Sofia confirms that she never saw her parents again , this particular scene can't be a memory. Instead, what's being shown is Sofia's imaginings, dreaming of the two people who risked so much to save her enjoying a well-deserved, peaceful life.

Alexander does still have his stolen Finnish passport when he leaves the hotel, so it is possible he was able to flee the country and reunite with Anna.

The black apples shown during this scene are another sign that it's nothing more than Sofia's fantasy . Earlier in the same episode, Alexander tells the Metropol staff of an old legend from when he was growing up. The story tells of a tree hidden deep in the woods, bearing " Apples as black as coal ." If a person found and ate the apples, they would have the chance to live their life anew. Alexander immediately adds that he wouldn't eat the apples if he were to find them today, as despite his tumultuous life, it's a journey he doesn't regret.

Alexander is never shown telling Sofia this same story, but the presence of the black apples in the story's closing sequence suggests that he did share the tale with her at some point.

How & Why Sofia Flees Russia At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Sofia's one-way trip to america took careful planning.

Despite being a staunch patriot, Alexander is still of the opinion that Sofia would have a better life in America than she would if she were to stay in Russia. Thankfully, Alexander's spying on the country's top brass in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 7 , "An Assembly," also presents an opportunity for McGregor's character to send his daughter to safety. The scheme is carried out in collaboration with Alexander's American ally , Richard Vanderwhile, who plans the operation for them.

Only Sofia is granted asylum by the Americans, with Alexander telling his daughter that the request for himself and Anna to receive the same treatment was simply too much to ask.

With the recordings from the meeting in her possession, Sofia heads to Paris as part of a musical tour. After performing, she cuts her hair short and changes her clothes to blend in with the crowd and leaves without being spotted. The powers that be grow wise to her scheme, as they move her performance slot from before the interval to the penultimate position in the running order. Thankfully, Sofia still has just enough time and barely manages to avoid being detected. After arriving at the American embassy in Paris, Vanderwhile arranges for Sofia to be flown to the USA .

Where Alexander Rostov Stands With Osip Glebnikov At The End Of A Gentleman In Moscow

Alexander & osip exchange declarations of friendship.

Alexander's relationship with Osip Glebnikov is intentionally unclear throughout A Gentleman in Moscow . Although Osip is essentially responsible for making sure Alexander doesn't break the terms of his sentence by leaving the Metropol, Alexander's jailer chooses to spend more time with his prisoner than is necessary for him to perform his duties. They engage in etiquette lessons, debates about literature, and even start to watch movies together. However, it mostly seems as though Osip is forcing the interactions to take place. Despite the ambiguity of their arrangement, Osip admits in the finale that he values their relationship .

The story of Ewan McGregor's Alexander Rostov from A Gentleman in Moscow shares some strong parallels to that of the actor's Star Wars character.

While warning McGregor's character of the danger Sofia is in - and by extension, Alexander himself - Osip says, " I like you, Alexander. I think of you as a friend ." The count replies in his signature guarded style: " As do I you, in a manner of speaking ." Osip may not have been the most valued figure to Alexander in his day-to-day life, but their friendship offered both men a different perspective. In addition, Osip also assisted Alexander return to the Metropol undetected following Sofia's trip to the hospital - an act that could have had both characters severely punished, if not killed.

Osip is also instrumental in making sure Anna departs for Finland without Alexander. By the time of "Adieu," Osip's wife and daughter are dead. So, Osip wants to make sure Alexander's family doesn't suffer the same fate.

Did Alexander Leave Manager Leplevsky To Die?

Alexander finally takes the revenge he's been trying to avoid.

Leplevsky is the biggest villain throughout the story of A Gentleman in Moscow , with Alexander's life at the Metropol Hotel becoming more difficult as his nemesis rises through the ranks. With Alexander's planned departure from the hotel imminent, it initially seems as though he's willing to let bygones be bygones and spare Leplevsky any acts of revenge. Unfortunately for the hotel manager, his last-minute discovery of Alexander's plan to escape results in McGregor needing to take action .

After arming himself with the dueling pistols from the manager's office, Alexander chains up Leplevsky in the bowels of the Metropol Hotel.

After arming himself with the dueling pistols from the manager's office, Alexander chains up Leplevsky in the bowels of the Metropol Hotel. At the same time, he incinerates the files the manager had been collating about the hotel's staff - Alexander and Sofia included. Leplevsky begs to be set free as Alexander departs , with the exchange between the two adversaries suggesting it would be a while before anyone finds the trapped hotel boss. So, while Alexander doesn't directly murder Manager Leplevsky, he could still be responsible for his death.

How Alexander's Imprisonment In The Metropol Hotel Was The Beginning Of His Life (Not The End)

Alexander rostov's personal life somehow flourished at the metropol.

When Alexander was sentenced to life imprisonment, he was in his early thirties. His only surviving family member was his grandmother, whom he had helped escape the country four years previously. In addition, he was estranged from Mishka - his oldest friend. Alexander had never married, nor fathered any children. Despite his life of wealth and privilege that had preceded his incarceration, he was deeply alone. Somewhat surprisingly, Alexander's decades trapped in the Metropol led to some of the most important relationships in his life .

Despite the early trauma of seeing Prince Nikolai being dragged out of the hotel to be shot in the street in A Gentleman in Moscow episode 1 , Alexander went on to hit a rich vein of social bonds. His friendship with Nina was vital during the early stages of his sentence, and although the pair struggled to stay on the same political wavelengths at times, their special relationship weathered the storm. Alexander also eventually managed to build bridges with Mishka .

Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia.

If Alexander was a father figure to Nina, then he was essentially a grandfather in his role as generational caretaker when Sofia was left in the count's care. Alexander raised Sofia as his own , while making sure she never forgot her birth mother. Eventually, Alexander's on-and-off romantic dynamic with Anna Urbanova solidified into a solid foundation of love and trust, with the pair essentially becoming joint parents to Sofia. As a result, Alexander hit several milestones during his imprisonment that he either neglected or failed to achieve while he was a free man.

The Real Meaning Of A Gentleman In Moscow's Ending

Alexander's unconfirmed destiny compounds the story of love and loss.

A Gentleman in Moscow , like so many other stories, is about love. However, the show's theme of love is also tied into the concept of loss, and how the two interact with one another. The love that Alexander Rostov has for Anna and Sofia results in him putting their safety first , ensuring they are away from the Metropol Hotel and safely on their respective ways to their new homes at the time of him making his escape attempt.

Alexander Rostov's journey in A Gentleman in Moscow has been full of twists and turns, but the bees in episode 3 serve as a brilliant metaphor.

Alexander is fully aware of the risks to himself, Anna, and Sofia that their plan presents. Still, the love he has for his found family makes him willing to put himself in harm's way if it means there's a chance of a better tomorrow for the daughter he cherishes and the woman he loves. Osip acts in a similar vein by helping Alexander. Despite losing his wife and daughter, Osip chooses not to let his grief turn him bitter and instead makes sure Alexander doesn't suffer the same heartbreak.

Sofia's fantasy of her parents living out their days together is about as perfect an ending as the show can expect, with the unconfirmed nature of the scenario contributing to the dark beauty of the story's conclusion.

Sofia's fantasy of her parents living out their days together is about as perfect an ending as the show can expect , with the unconfirmed nature of the scenario contributing to the dark beauty of the story's conclusion. The trio would never have had the life they'd wanted in the building that brought the three of them together. Knowing this, they give their best effort to free themselves of the restrictions imposed upon them by Alexander's prison sentence. A Gentleman in Moscow 's final episode perfectly encapsulates the tale's message of sacrifice in the name of love.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.

Putin’s China Visit Highlights Military Ties That Worry the West

The Russian leader visited an institute in Harbin known for defense research. President Xi Jinping saw him off with a rare and seemingly deliberate embrace for the cameras.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia attended a trade fair on Friday in a northeastern Chinese city and toured a state-backed university famous for its cutting-edge defense research, highlighting how economic and military ties between the countries have grown despite, or perhaps because of, Western pressure.

Mr. Putin’s visit to Harbin, a Chinese city with a Russian past, is part of a trip aimed at demonstrating that he has powerful friends even as his war against Ukraine — a campaign that he is escalating — has isolated him from the West. The visit followed a day of talks between him and President Xi Jinping of China that seemed orchestrated to convey not only the strategic alignment of the two powerful, autocratic leaders against the West, but a personal connection.

State media showed Mr. Putin and Mr. Xi, neckties off after formal talks on Thursday, strolling under willow trees and sipping tea at a traditional pavilion on the sprawling grounds of Zhongnanhai, the walled leadership compound in Beijing, with only their interpreters. As Mr. Xi saw Mr. Putin off in the evening, he even initiated a hug — a rare expression of affection for the Chinese leader.

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, both seated at a table, gazing in the same direction as two men sit behind them. All four are wearing dark suits and white shirts.

“Xi’s very deliberate embrace of Putin for the cameras wasn’t just to emphasize the closeness of the political relationship between the two countries and their leaders,” said Richard McGregor, a senior fellow for East Asia at the Lowy Institute in Sydney. “There was also a touch of disdain directed at Washington, which has been pressuring Beijing to withdraw support from Moscow. That clearly isn’t going to happen in any substantive fashion.”

The show of camaraderie was the final touch in talks that culminated in a joint statement that took aim at the United States, which Mr. Putin and Mr. Xi have accused of seeking to suppress their countries. The statement pledged that Russia and China would work more closely in critical sectors like energy, space and the military.

The large size of Russia’s delegation, which included Mr. Putin’s top security and energy officials, as well the length of the bilateral meetings, implied the seriousness with which both sides have approached the negotiations, said Alexander Gabuev, a China expert at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin.

“It’s like an iceberg,” he said. “The public documents are symbolic and largely meaningless. But there’s an underwater part, which is likely to be much more significant.”

Still, Mr. Putin’s visit also showed the limits of the countries alliance. In China, Mr. Xi rolled out the red carpet for Mr. Putin, but the visit did not produce any public commitments to concrete new projects or investments between the two countries.

Specifically, Mr. Putin and Mr. Xi have not publicly reported any progress on a planned new gas pipeline from China into Russia, known as Power of Siberia 2. Russia urgently needs the pipeline to redirect the flow of its gas exports from the rapidly declining market in Europe.

Mr. Putin had no news to share about the pipeline’s progress when he was asked about it in a brief news conference at the end of his trip on Friday.

“I am not prepared to discuss any technical details, but the interest of both sides in realizing these projects has been confirmed,” Mr. Putin said, referring to Power of Siberia 2.

He also deflected a question about reports that Chinese banks are reducing transactions with Russian clients out of fear of Western sanctions, turning the conversation from China to the shortcomings of the U.S. financial system.

The growing security ties between the two nuclear-armed powers was a focal point of Mr. Putin’s visit to Harbin, and the Harbin Institute of Technology.

While China and Russia are not formal allies committed to defend each other with military support, their armed forces have worked together more closely in recent years. Their air forces and navies have held joint military exercises, including near Alaska and Taiwan, the de facto independent island claimed by Beijing. On Thursday, the two leaders issued words of support for their separate claims to Taiwan and Ukraine.

And while China has vowed not to provide Russia with lethal weapons, it has been the top supplier of components like semiconductors and machine tools that have both civilian and military uses.

While that is helpful, Mr. Putin still seeks access to more sophisticated tools. The Harbin institute is best known for its research of rockets, missiles and space technology — expertise that Russia would greatly benefit from as the war in Ukraine has revived its need for a more robust military-industrial complex. The institute also trained North Korean scientists who worked on Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program, according to The Wall Street Journal and South Korean media.

Mr. Putin’s tour of the institute was steeped in symbolism. The 103-year-old institution recently opened a joint campus with St. Petersburg State University, Mr. Putin’s alma mater. And in something of a snub to Washington, the school belongs on the United States’ so-called entity list, barring it from accessing American technology and taking part in educational exchanges because of its links to the People’s Liberation Army.

“We should be less concerned about what particular technologies China might be sharing with Russia from Harbin or elsewhere, than the larger pattern and signal that this visit represents,” said Markus Garlauskas, a security expert at the Atlantic Council.

“China did not need to host Putin at Harbin in order to transfer technologies from there to Russia,” he added. “That this visit took place so openly is a visible and symbolic sign of Beijing being willing to provide directly military-applicable technology to support Russia’s war against Ukraine.”

Song Zhongping, a commentator in Beijing who is a former military officer, defended Mr. Putin’s visit to the institute, pointing to the school’s cooperation with Russia in education.

“Communication at the university level between China and Russia is consistent with the academic exchange and national interests of both countries,” Mr. Song said.

Mr. Garlauskas said the tour of the institute had echoes of when Mr. Putin hosted Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, at a Russian spaceport last year before Pyongyang began supplying Moscow with ballistic missiles and other munitions to use in Ukraine.

“What China shares with Russia, Russia could easily then turn around and share with North Korea,” Mr. Garlauskas said.

Not long ago, it was China that drew greater benefits from access to Russian military technology. Starting in the 1990s, and peaking in the early 2000s, Beijing was a major buyer of Russian arms. Sales then began to slow after Moscow grew concerned about China reverse-engineering Russian weapons, said Elizabeth Wishnick, a senior research scientist at the Center for Naval Analyses in Virginia.

It wasn’t until about a decade ago that cooperation between the two sides returned, leading to China’s acquisition of more Russian jet engine technology and surface-to-air missile systems. Still, in a sign that there are limits to its cooperation with China, Russia is holding out sharing its silent submarine technology, a feature that makes the vessels especially hard to detect, Ms. Wishnick said.

Mr. Putin is also using his visit to Harbin, where he attended a trade fair, to promote the flow of goods between the countries.

China has given Russia an economic lifeline by buying huge amounts of Russian oil to circumvent the effects of its financial isolation from the West. Not only that, with many foreign consumer brands also leaving Russia, Chinese companies have stepped in to fill a vacuum for the likes of automobiles , smartphones and televisions. That contributed to a record $240 billion in two-way trade between the China and Russia in 2023, up from $190 billion in 2022, according to Chinese customs data.

Maintaining that growth in trade is a major focus in both countries, analysts said, now that Western pressure on Chinese banks to scale back transactions with Russian firms is believed to have led to the first year-on-year decline in trade in more than two years in March.

One solution would be to increase the amount of transactions settled in local currencies rather than dollars to avoid the risk of sanctions. Mr. Putin said on Thursday that more than 90 percent of commercial transactions conducted between Russia and China were now being cleared in rubles or renminbi.

“Protecting the financial assets of big banks in China is the top crucial interest of China,” said Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Renmin University in Beijing. He said China was trying to reduce its exposure to the dollar beyond just in Russia, but that the room to do so was “limited.”

Putin seeks to deepen trade ties with Beijing in China’s ‘little Moscow’

A fter a Thursday spent in Beijing reaffirming the harmony between Russia and China, certified with the signing of a joint declaration to the effect that relations between the two countries have reached their “highest-ever level,” and after announcing collaboration in all manner of fields — from artificial intelligence to lunar exploration and military dominance — while also accusing the United States of still thinking “in Cold War terms” and of taking a “destructive and hostile” course aimed at the containment of both Moscow and Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday used the second day of his official visit to the Asian giant to travel to Heilongjiang, a border province located in northeast China whose historical roots with neighboring Russia run deep.

This second event of the Russian leader’s trip — framed within the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Moscow — took on a cultural and economic aspect. Putin traveled to the capital of the region, Harbin, without his counterpart, Xi Jinping , with whom he spent much of Thursday in formal meetings with the two leaders’ delegations, as well as sharing a walk and tea alone by a lake, taking in a concert, and attending an informal dinner with their closest confidants.

Once known as “little Moscow,” Harbin has had close ties with Russia since the late 19th century. It has welcomed numerous expatriates from the neighboring country and maintains a historical link still distinguishable in architectural elements, such as the domes of the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia.

Putin, who was received and accompanied in Harbin by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, began his visit by laying a wreath at the monument dedicated to Soviet soldiers who fell alongside Chinese troops during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), when Japan occupied parts of China. The Russian leader’s agenda included the opening of the 8th Russian-Chinese Expo and the 4th Russian-Chinese Interregional Cooperation Forum, as well as a visit to the Church of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an Orthodox temple, and Harbin Polytechnic University.

Putin took advantage of the border location, where relations have not always been peaceful between the neighbors, to talk about growing economic ties. He made special mention of gas and oil, the great liquidity lifeline for Russia after over two years of war in Ukraine. “I am confident that our strategic alliance in the energy sector, which has become a reliable support for the entire global energy market, will continue to strengthen,” Putin said at the opening ceremony of the Russian-Chinese Expo and Interregional Cooperation Forum, as reported by the Russian agency Tass .

Analysts expected that the Russian leader would try to advance a possible agreement during his visit on the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline, which has been under negotiation for years and would pump gas to China through Mongolia. In negotiations with Xi on the subject, Putin added, prospects for “such multifaceted cooperation” were discussed, as reported by Tass.

Putin also praised trade figures between Moscow and Beijing, which exceeded $240 billion in 2023, up 26.4% from the previous year. “This is far from the limit, of course,” Putin said.

Russia’s disengagement from much of the world since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine has at the same time meant a strengthening of ties with China that the West is wary of. “More effort is needed to curtail delivery of dual use goods to Russia that find their way to the battlefield,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week at the end of a trilateral meeting with the Chinese leader and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.

The declaration sealed Thursday between Putin and Xi can be expected to add to the mounting mistrust in Brussels and, particularly, Washington. The lengthy text, which stretches to over 12,000 characters in its Chinese version, is particularly critical of the U.S., which the two leaders accused of trying to “undermine strategic stability in order to maintain its absolute military superiority.”

The pact condemns what it considers a U.S. missile deployment that threatens Russia and China and the widespread use of the U.S. nuclear umbrella among its allies in the region such as Australia; it also condemns Aukus — the security agreement between the U.S., Australia, and the United Kingdom — and what it considers Washington’s growing military presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Moscow and Beijing “will strengthen coordination and cooperation to confront the hostile and destructive course of the so-called dual containment policy of the United States towards China and Russia,” the communiqué states.

“Both sides oppose the creation of a closed and exclusive bloc structure in the Asia-Pacific, especially a military alliance against third parties,” the statement adds. “NATO’s destructive moves in the region,” it concludes, “have had a negative impact on peace and stability.”
