Katt Williams

Closed November 24, 2023

Williams doesn't show up at the usual red carpet premieres and Hollywood parties. With a persona that falls somewhere between a possessed revival preacher and Looney Tunes' Tasmanian Devil, they're probably happy not to have him.

Denver Post

Why See Katt Williams?

Comedy & Stand-up

dark matter

Williams' sharply tuned mind is unafraid to tackle any topic, no matter how awkward it may seem. From first taking to the stage as a teenager with his thought-provoking (and hilarious) social commentary, William now boasts over 20 years in the 'biz. Known for covering topics like the war on drugs, truth and lies and even the chicken wing shortage, in his brand new tour 'Dark' Matter', who knows what Williams' will joke about!

While stand-up comedy remains Williams' first love, he's probably still best-known for his breakout role as Money Mike in Friday After Next. He's also appeared in American Hustle, My Wife and Kids, Norbit, and Scary Movie 5.

Go inside Winstar casino’s new 6,500-seat entertainment venue Lucas Oil Live

The world’s biggest casino is getting even bigger.

Winstar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, Okla., a popular destination for Dallas-Fort Worth gamblers, will open its new 240,000-square-foot, 6,500-seat entertainment venue, Lucas Oil Live, in October. Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band headline the venue’s first concert Oct. 13, followed by acts representing a variety of genres.

“I don’t think there’s a comparable venue like this in the [D-FW] metro,” said Jack Parkinson, senior general manager of Winstar. “Just for sightlines, sound systems and intimacy, you’re probably going to be struggling to find something like this.”

The space is cavernous, but even the nosebleed seats at the very top and back have a close view of the stage. Seats are spread between three levels, including a floor area that can support temporary seating or a pit, depending on the performance. The stage could fit an NBA basketball court, according to Jessica Haisler, marketing assistant general manager, and two large LED screens bracket it on either side.

Lucas Oil Live is the crown jewel of Winstar’s latest slate of multimillion-dollar improvements.

Beginning with December’s opening of the Spa Tower hotel, which connects with the venue, the Chickasaw Nation showplace added a two-story spa and a five-acre pool complex called Cascades in May. The additional 304 hotel rooms bring Winstar’s total to over 1,700. The golf clubhouse was also redone, and new restaurants and bars were added.

“This is probably the biggest expansion that we’ve done,” Parkinson said. “But it’s more satisfying because it brings everything together as a property.”

In a departure from the world destination-themed styling that is Winstar’s hallmark, Spa Tower emulates the modern, serene design of resorts across the world. Haisler emphasized the importance of texture in all the new additions. Dark, warm wood and sleek stone are the design motifs that permeate the building, whether it be granite lamps in front of wood paneling in the spa’s lounge area or the backsplash at the pool bar.

Those same motifs are found inside Lucas Oil Live, which feels as much an extension of the hotel as it does a venue made for stars like Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, who are coming later this year. The venue has extensive suite and VIP spaces, all outfitted with abstract wall decor that doubles as sound dampening, and both the outdoor entrance and concert space walls feature minimalist linear light fixtures.

The goal is to transform Winstar from just a massive casino gaming floor that spans over 400,000 square feet into a premium, holistic resort experience.

“We have a five-acre pool, a multilevel spa, and you can go see Rod Stewart at the same time and have a really nice gaming experience,” said Dan Boren, secretary of commerce of the Chickasaw Nation. “That experience evolved from just, ‘Hey, we’re gonna spend a few hours and then we’re gonna go home,’ to ‘We may stay here for a few days.’”

Stewart’s November concert at Lucas Oil Live is already sold out, and other artists like Tim McGraw are getting close. Through focus groups and other market research, Winstar knew the demand was there for live entertainment, and it’s paying off. Indianapolis-based Lucas Oil, which produces high-performance automotive lubricants and additives, struck a deal earlier this year for naming rights to the venue.

Before COVID-19, Winstar had a smaller venue that it converted to additional gaming space during the pandemic, meaning Ringo Starr and his band will be the first concert in over three years.

About an hour to the east, though, Choctaw Casino and Resort’s Grand Theater, a 3,000-seat venue, has been hosting acts since 2012 and the Durant location recently added a 21-story luxury tower in 2021 in its own $600 million expansion .

As the two largest casinos in Oklahoma and both just over the Texas-Oklahoma border, Winstar and Choctaw often compete for D-FW business with resort-style amenities. Casinos in Oklahoma grossed more than $4.5 billion in revenue in 2022, according to the American Gaming Association.

“We term it friendly competition. Every time that one of us adds a new venue or a new amenity to our properties we make ourselves better … A rising tide lifts all boats,” Boren said. “At the end of the day, the dollars that we generate from these facilities go back into vital programs and services for Chickasaw citizens.”

The Chickasaw Nation employs more than 14,000 people and brought in revenue of $3.3 billion in fiscal 2021 from its 23 gaming establishments and other business ventures, according to the tribe’s most recent financial report .

Boren said the Winstar additions brought over 500 jobs to the area and another 500 full-time positions will be added to support them. He expects the new attractions to make “a real impact” on the local economy, as high-profile acts come through Lucas Oil Live and attract more tourists and fans.

“The things that we do have a direct impact on making sure that seniors have access to medical care, making sure that Chickasaw children go to summer camp and to a good college or university,” Boren said. “It’s not just a business. It’s much, much more.”

Coming to the stage

Katt Williams Takes on Reparations and Hunter Biden in Live Netflix Special

It was Mo’Nique, however, who stole the show with almost 20 minutes of barbs aimed at Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King.

INGLEWOOD, California—Given a live global platform Saturday night by Netflix , Katt Williams closed out an electric hour of comedy punctuated by multiple audio/visual cues with a call for the United States to pay out reparations for enslaving generations of Black Americans, and citing our eager willingness to fund other nations such as Ukraine right now as proof of concept.

“It is now time for Black people in America to get paid reparations for everything that them and their ancestors have been through in American history,” Williams declared in front of 6,000 in attendance at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, plus upward of millions more watching live on Netflix. “Why now, Katt? Thanks for asking, white friends. I’ll tell you why now. And understand white friends, I don’t speak for all Black people. But I do speak for all n—rs. And you are not supposed to know the difference.”

Williams continued: “The time is now. And understand, white friends. I know you’re thinking, no seriously, Katt, why now? I’ll tell you why. And these are the facts. We just gave $100 billion to the Ukraine. And God bless the Ukrainians. But off the record? We don’t know them n—-rs like that! You could’ve gave that money to Black people. The fuck? We done gave them all that money. The truth is they over there getting their ass whooped over there. You coulda gave that money to the Black people of Los Angeles, and they’d have went over there and whooped their ass in two weeks. Look. It looks like reparations is for Black people. But it’s not. It’s for you, white friend. It’s for you. It’s going to help us, but it’s for you. Sure, every Black person going to wake up with $20 million in the bank. So the fuck what? It’s for you, white friends. You think American been great before? Wait til we got a country full of rich n—rs. This fitting to be the greatest country in the world, bitch!”

The comedian also hoped to persuade more conservative white Americans to support reparations by appealing to their baser instincts.

“White friend, don’t you want to get slavery behind you? You never had a slave in your motherfucking life. Get this past you. You pay them reparations, racism is dead. Get it past you, white friends,” Williams concluded. “Here’s what they won’t tell you, white friends. You pay them reparations, you can say n—r any time you want to, do you hear me?”

Katt Williams: Woke Foke , just the second stand-up special streamed live globally by Netflix after last year’s Chris Rock: Selective Outrage , was one of the centerpiece events of the second-ever Netflix Is a Joke Fest, happening through the first 12 days and nights of May across Los Angeles. Williams had several comedians warm up the audience in the two hours leading up to livestream, and he opened by expressing his gratitude at how far he’d come since his early years. “It was ’99 and the 2000s and I was in this Inglewood at the Hollywood Park Casino for $100 a week, and God brought me 24 Kobe years later, bam ! Live. Right here in motherfucking Inglewood. God really is the greatest.”

Part of what drew Netflix to picking Williams for their next live special was his three-hour performance on retired footballer Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, which has racked up more than 68 million views since premiering Jan. 3 on YouTube. The comedian made sure to shout that out early in his hour, too: “I tried to be incog-Negro but thanks to Shannon Sharpe’s loudmouth ass, the gig is up. Everybody knows I’ll tell. But I don’t do no snitching! Y’all know my job. In my spare time I infiltrate the Illuminati. Look for their secrets. Run back. Tell y’all. And they’d kill me if they could, but I’m too fast, and the Lord keep blessing me.”

Although Williams did name-check many entertainers and politicians in the hour—among them, Nick Cannon, Robert De Niro, Jamie Foxx, Da Brat, Trick Daddy, Tory Lanez, Lizzo, Sharon Osbourne, P. Diddy, Wayne Brady, Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis—none of it rose to quite the same salacious level as the fires he stoked in January.

For example, lampooning the FBI’s non-investigation into a bag of cocaine found inside the White House, Williams showed a giant photo of a baggie labeled “Hunter’s Blow” to suggest the true culprit, then added: “Hunter on crack. Joe asleep. The only person really working at the White house behind the scenes is Joe Biden’s German Shepherd named Commander.” He then showed a photo of the president with his pooch, while joking about how many Secret Service agents Commander Biden had bitten.

And while Williams did take a crack at the trend of celebrities abusing Ozempic to lose weight, his zinger that “They said Oprah took so much that Gayle lost 12 pounds” had nowhere near as much sting as Mo’Nique’s almost 20 minutes of barbs had for Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King , none of which were broadcast or streamed outside of the venue.

“I’m too god damn old to be scared of these motherfuckers!” Mo’Nique exclaimed after calling out both Winfrey and Tyler Perry, reigniting her feud with both of them that had dated back to her work with them on her Oscar-winning portrayal in the 2009 film, Precious . “And people keep saying: ‘Mo’Nique, why do you keep fucking with Oprah Winfrey?’ Because she fucked with me. That bitch rung my doorbell. I didn’t ring her motherfucking doorbell. That raggedy stank-ass bitch rang my motherfucking doorbell, and I answered that bitch.”

Photograph of Mo'Nique.

Mo’Nique performs at “Katt Williams: Woke Foke” for Netflix is a Joke Festival.

Mo’Nique went on to describe Winfrey as a woman who “crossed the goddamn track to Whiteville” who needs “a good piece of Black dick” to be brought back to her racial senses. After asking for potential volunteers from the audience, Mo’Nique clarified, “now if you fuck Oprah you must fuck Gayle. It’s a package.” But mentioning King only served to launch the comedian into a rant alleging that King smells, hoping audiences would “hashtag that” as “#StaleGayleWashYourTail.”

“And you’re looking at me, like, Mo’Nique, that is mean. No bitch, it is the motherfucking truth, and I will say it out loud so she will wash her ass moving forward and don’t nobody else have to experience that stinky shit. Y’all heard Snoop Doog. Funky dog head bitch!”

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.
