The best travel accessories to pack on every trip

By Madison Flager

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Human Person Bag Handbag Accessories Accessory Hat and Sun Hat

Packing lists will vary based on where you're going and how long you're travelling for, but the best travel accessories can improve every trip. From tech gadgets to keep your electronics powered up and luggage accessories that ensure you're not hit with an overweight baggage charge, having the right gear means a smoother journey, every time. Below, we've rounded up 27 essential items to pack inside your carry-on bag , weekender , or checked luggage . Consider these the travel gear staples to bring on your next trip – and all your future holidays after that.

  • A trusted tote
  • A travel wash bag
  • Packing cubes
  • Jewellery case
  • Reusable travel bottles
  • Hydrating skincare products
  • A portable charger
  • A power adapter
  • A luggage scale
  • A way to find your luggage
  • An e-reader
  • A portable fan
  • A portable steamer
  • An eye mask
  • A neck pillow
  • A shawl or blanket
  • Hand sanitiser and wipes
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Snack containers
  • A passport holder
  • A back-up travel bag
  • An umbrella

1. A trusted tote

A tote bag is the ideal personal item. It's roomy enough to store all your odds and ends, and everything you'd want with you during a flight, and is usually pretty pliable, meaning you can squeeze it under the seat without taking up all of your foot room. Look for one with comfortable shoulder straps, should you overload it with snacks. A trolley sleeve is a nice feature, too, so you can slide it over your suitcase while cruising through the airport.

2. A travel wash bag

A travel wash bag is key to staying organised — and avoiding spills in your luggage. We like these options from Away and Bagsmart for their water-resistant materials and ample space for your toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, soaps, and more. A hanging bag, like those below, also allows you to keep items tidy and off the bathroom counter.

3. Packing cubes

Don't underestimate the power of a good packing cube . Articles director Lale Arikoglu has waxed poetic about her love of Paravel's packing cubes (other editors are fans of Away's set ), which come in a range of sizes to store everything from bathing suits and socks to T-shirts.

4. Jewellery case

A rule to live by: never check your valuables, especially jewellery. Keep necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings safe and neatly organised inside a jewellery case. We like Monica Vinader's for smaller accessories; if you're packing sunglasses and watches, you'll want something slightly bigger, like this Smythson option.

5. Reusable travel bottles

Rather than buy plastic travel-sized toiletries , get yourself a set of leakproof travel bottles that allow you to bring your at-home favourites on the go. They're great for storing toiletries and beauty products, and tubs can also be used to keep small items like jewellery or vitamins.

6. Hydrating skincare products

Even if you're not the type of person with a multi-step in-flight skincare routine , a few basics can go a long way in keeping your skin happy and healthy after a long day of travel. Since hand sanitiser remains a travel essential, a hand balm to apply once or twice a day is equally important to keep them moisturised. Aesop's smells incredible, and will last for several trips to come — a little bit of the thick, creamy balm goes a long way. Don't forget a hydrating lip balm, either.

7. A portable charger

There's nothing like a dead battery to slow down a trip. Keep all your accessories charged up with a power bank — Anker is our favourite, but iWalk's mini charger is a great option if you're short on space.

john lewis travel accessories

8. A power adapter

For international travel, a power adapter is a must to make sure you can get devices charged up in the airport and your hotel room. Apple's World Travel Adapter Kit comes with seven AC plugs with prongs that fit into different electrical outlets around the world, and each one is labelled with the regions they are compatible with. (As for compatibility, it works with Apple USB-C power adapters; MagSafe and MagSafe 2 power adapters; 10W, 12W, 30 and 35W USB ports; and portable power adapters.) We also recommend this Bluetooth converter , which lets you use your regular cordless earbuds to watch a movie in flight.

9. Headphones

Whether the plan is to listen to music, watch a movie, or just drown out noisy neighbours, most of us won't board a plane without headphones. Make sure you have your go-to on hand, plus a pair of corded earbuds (if you don't have one of these Bluetooth adapters ).

john lewis travel accessories

10. A luggage scale

Give yourself some added peace of mind with a digital luggage scale; it’ll let you know how much damage your souvenirs did before arriving at the check-in counter on the way home.

john lewis travel accessories

11. A way to find your luggage

Speaking of luggage, the Tile Pro and Apple AirTags can help locate lost bags (or wallets, or keys, depending on what you attach it to). In fact, a luggage tracker is one of the items contributor Harrison Pierce wishes he had when he began travelling full-time .

john lewis travel accessories

12. An e-reader

Even travellers with a library full of books at home have to admit it: E-readers are an essential travel accessory for bookworms . They are so much lighter than even one paperback book, and let you bring as many options as you want along for the ride.

john lewis travel accessories

13. A portable fan

If you're headed somewhere warm, or just tend to run hot, do yourself a favour and pack a portable fan. Whether you choose a handheld option or one you can wrap around your neck, it'll give you the breeze you need whether you're in the back of a crowded bus or van, standing in line at Disneyland, or kicking back in a beach chair .

john lewis travel accessories

14. A portable steamer

If you're travelling to a wedding or heading out on a business trip, you may want to bring a portable steamer along to make sure your formalwear looks its best after you take it out of your suitcase. Traveller contributor Erinne Magee put nine travel steamers to the test to find out which ones are the best options for travellers — below are two of her favourites.

john lewis travel accessories

15. A tech kit

All of those tech items mean you're going to have plenty of charging cubes and cables to keep track of. Save space in your backpack — and save yourself the headache of digging through your bag — by keeping everything wrapped up in a tech kit like the ones below.

john lewis travel accessories

16. An eye mask

For a comfortable journey at 30,000 feet — especially one where you hope to get some shut-eye —an eye mask is crucial. For more help sleeping, try the Bluetooth sleep headband recommended by US contributor Iona Brannon, which lets you listen to music or white noise without anything in or around your ears; in a pinch it can even double as an eye mask, she says.

john lewis travel accessories

17. A neck pillow

Another comfort essential: a travel pillow . It can take some time to find the style you like best, and your pick might vary depending on whether you're in-flight or in a car. Two we like: The classic memory foam wraparound neck pillow, which can be tightened or loosened per your preference, and the innovative fleecy neck wrap recommended by commerce writer Charley Ward .

john lewis travel accessories

18. Cosy socks

We love a good pair of compression socks to fight that pins-and-needles feeling that comes from sitting still for too long, be it on a long-haul flight  or a road trip . For those who prefer a cosier option, we recommend socks from Barefoot Dreams .

Ostrich Pillow, Compression Socks

19. Earplugs

When you need some peace and quiet, swap your noise-cancelling headphones in for earplugs. This set comes with multiple sizes, so you can find the right fit, and share with any family members you're travelling with.

john lewis travel accessories

20. A shawl or blanket

For those who run cold, an oversized scarf will get plenty of use in transit, and can even double as a blanket. Opt for a quality material you can pack for years to come, like cashmere.

john lewis travel accessories

21. Hand sanitiser and wipes

As for general wellness, hand sanitiser is a must — buy a set and drop one in all your most-used totes and sling bags so you're never without. Some biodegradable wipes are nice to have on hand too, especially if you're travelling with little ones .

john lewis travel accessories

22. A reusable water bottle

Rounding out our collection of the best travel accessories are some odds and ends, like a good reusable water bottle, so you can stop buying overpriced bottles at the airport (and be kinder to the environment).

john lewis travel accessories

23. Snack containers

If overpriced airport snacks aren't your jam, come prepared by filling reusable Stasher bags with popcorn, crackers, fruit, or whatever else you'd like in-flight before you leave your house. A reusable utensil set is another nice-to-have travel accessory that'll allow you to turn down the plastic cutlery you might be handed in the airport or elsewhere on the road. The spoon and chopsticks are particularly TSA-friendly (while utensils are technically allowed through security , it's at the discretion of the agent if they'll let plastic knives or forks).

john lewis travel accessories

24. A passport holder

Also handy: a high-quality passport holder (bonus points if it has space to hold your credit cards) to keep your most important document protected. Aspinal's can be personalised with your initials for an added £20.

john lewis travel accessories

25. A back-up travel bag

For trips where you plan to shop, something lightweight, like Paravel's Fold-Up Bag or Baggu's Cloud Bag , is a smart addition to your packing list. Stuff it with souvenirs on your way home, or use it for overnight or weekend trips within a longer holiday.

john lewis travel accessories

26. A travel umbrella

Depending on your destination, a travel-size umbrella might be worth the space in your luggage. And if you're driving, tossing one in the backseat is a no-brainer. Contributor Claire Volkman tested out around a dozen options on our US sister site to determine which are the sturdiest and most compact. Shop two of her favourites, both available in the UK, below.

John Lewis reveals its bestselling products since the travel green list was announced

From bright pink lipsticks to luggage, we’ve had a nosy at what eager holiday goers are buying right now, article bookmarked.

Travel is finally becoming something we can look forward to again. As part of the government’s pathway out of lockdown, it has introduced a traffic light system for entering and leaving the country.

The green list – entailing the countries that you don’t need to quarantine when returning from – was updated recently, and now features holiday hotspots such as Ibiza, Malta and Antigua.

Since the announcement, customers at John Lewis have been busy filling their baskets to get ready for a long-awaited getaway. The retailer has seen sales of pool inflatables increase by 43 per cent, firepits rise by 43 per cent, beachwear increase by 75 per cent and suitcases increase by 53 per cent, compared this time last year.

But it’s beauty that has taken the top spot as the most popular category for shoppers, with face self-tan sales up 94 per cent, body self-tan up 13 per cent, sun cream increasing by a huge 151 per cent and aftersun sales rising by 110 per cent. Not only that, there’s been a huge 293 per cent increase in sales of nail files and 47 per cent across nail polishes .

We’ve got all lowdown on John Lewis’s bestsellers since the travel news was revealed, as well as recommendations from our tried and tested reviews. Thank us later.

  • 10 best sunscreens for your face
  • 12 best fire pits for evenings spent in the garden
  • 9 best cabin bags to return to travel in style

You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent .

After being deprived of warmer climes for what feels like forever, it’s no wonder that self-tan has become a recent bestseller for John Lewis.

The most popular among customers is the Clarins radiance-plus golden glow booster for face (£22, Johnlewis.com ) which is designed to be added into your night cream so you can wake up with a faux sunkissed glow.

Simply mix two to three drops into your favourite moisturiser and make sure it’s applied evenly before washing your hands to avoid any patchiness.

Looking for other recommendations? In our guide to the best face tanners for an effortless summer glow , we loved the Dior bronze self tanning jelly gradual glow (£29, Johnlewis.com ) that has none of the traditional biscuity tanning scent.

Our reviewer said: “Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned self-tanner, you’ll love how the gel-like texture makes applying evenly completely fool-proof. This is another gradual tanner, so you have to build up the colour for your desired effect, but we loved the convincing sun-kissed look after three days of use that fades naturally if you don’t top up.”

Aside from faking it until you make it, if you’re planning to catch some real rays, you need sun protection (FYI, you should wear it all year round, too). When it comes to facial SPF, taking the number one spot for John Lewis shoppers is the Clinique super city block SPF40 (£20, Johnlewis.com ). Creamy and lightweight, it offers a fuss-free way to slot sun protection into your skin routine.

Suitable for all skin types, even sensitive, it offers broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays and is rich in antioxidants to protect skin from environmental stress too.

For keeping your body protected, the Ultrasun family SPF30 (£46, Johnlewis.com ) has been a bestselling success and we can attest it’s well worth adding to your basket as it also appeared in our guide to the best body sunscreens . Our reviewer loved it for the gel texture that was neither too sloppy nor too thick.

“Ultrasun offers full solar spectrum protection from UVA, UVB, blue light and infrared rays. It also protects against heat rash and prickly heat. We liked the environmentally-friendly way the instructions are printed on the inside of the box and loved the diagram showing how many fingers of sunscreen for each body part – so simple and easy to remember,” they said.

Just in case you overdo it sunbathing, make sure you’re stocked up on aftersun to soothe inflamed skin. According to John Lewis, the Ultrasun cooling & moisturising after sun gel (£15.99, Johnlewis.com ) has been a huge hit with shoppers.

It claims to offer a refreshing, non-sticky finish that will absorb quickly and soothe skin thanks to its immediate cooling effect. Rich in glycerin, it’ll keep skin hydrated too.

Looking for a cream formula instead of a gel? We also love the Nuxe Sun refreshing after sun lotion (£19, Johnlewis.com ) that earned a spot in our guide to the best aftersun lotions, creams and balms .

According to our reviewer, this non-comedogenic lotion is usefully suitable for both face and body, and has carob seed extract to help prolong your tan. “We loved the way the satiny lotion glides onto the skin, leaving it hydrated and refreshed,” they said.

Bright lipstick is a holiday essential and will always complement a tan and add a final touch for any evening outfits. The Charlotte Tilbury matte revolution lipstick in “lost cherry” (£25, Johnlewis.com ), has been one of John Lewis’s bestsellers since the green list was announced.

It’s a vibrant fuchsia pink that’ll add a pop of colour to any outfit, and the hydrating, richly pigmented shade will last all day with minimal touch-ups too.

If you’d prefer a more muted shade, John Lewis has revealed that its customers have also been loving the Chanel rouge coco ultra-hydrating lip colour in shade “434 Mademoiselle” (£31, Johnlewis.com ).

Due to popular demand, this shade is currently sold out, but if you're still looking for a Chanel lippy to wear this summer, here at IndyBest we love the Chanel rouge allure ink in “true red” (£33, Johnlewis.com ). So much so that it landed best buy status in our review of the best long-lasting lipsticks that won't dry out your lips .

“It doesn’t settle into creases or bleed, even without lip liner. We found it lasted beautifully through two meals, though you might want to touch it up a little in the centre of your lips,” our reviewer said.

A big part of holiday prep for many is ensuring your nails are perfectly manicured and painted with a fun, summery shade, so it’s unsurprising that the Nails Inc’s “relationship status: proud collection” (£22, Johnlewis.com ) has flown off shelves at John Lewis.

Featuring four different nail polishes, they’re a rainbow mix of pastel blue, purple and mint green with a classic bright red too that are perfect for your hands and feet.

If you want to perfectly prime your nails and keep them in tip-top condition, a nail file is essential, and sales are up a massive 293 per cent at John Lewis.

In our guide to the best nail files for manicures at home , our favourite was the Tweezerman neon filemates set (£6, Johnlewis.com ) which come in a handy three-piece set.

“These are traditional dual-sided emery boards but in two-tone neon, which makes the whole experience more fun. They’re a little thick and cushioned, and have a different grit texture on each side: 100 and 180. Use the finer grit on natural nails and the heavier on acrylics; we’ve also used it to buff the shine off gels before removal,” said our reviewer.

At John Lewis, sales of fire pits have increased by 43 per cent recently, as us Brits are enjoying spending time in our gardens, without being left chilly when the sun goes down and the nights get colder.

The La Hacienda harleston firepit with cooking grill (£169, Johnlewis.com ) has been a bestseller. Boasting a modern square design with a bronze finish, it’s functional without being an eyesore.

Made to be used with lump wood charcoal for outdoor warmth, it also has a large chrome cooking grill to allow you to cook up a feast for the whole family and enjoy warmer evenings.

In our guide to the best fire pits for evenings spent in the garden , we also loved the Weber fireplace (£184,99, Hillmount.co.uk ) that was rated for being the best at heat output.

“Made from porcelain-enamelled steel, it has a minimalist, contemporary aesthetic and is made to last, looking as good as new several years later. We also like the clever lid that can be turned into a bracket to act as a holder, windbreak and heat reflector – and, when it’s time for bed or there are children nearby, you can use it to instantly extinguish the fire,” said our tester.

No holiday is complete without a suitcase, filled to the brim with summery dresses, swimwear and SPF, and according to John Lewis, the American Tourister summer splash 4-wheel 55cm cabin case (£60, Johnlewis.com ) has proven popular among shoppers.

The hardshell outer will keep your valuable safe from damage and the double wheels will ensure smooth rolling over the airport and hotel floors. It’ll be a breeze keeping your belongings organised and secure throughout the airport, in taxis or on trains.

A travel iron is an essential tool to have in your arsenal if you're someone who likes to look sharp on the move.

It's all well and good packing away your favourite shirts ahead of your next trip but, without an iron to hand, they'll likely stay packed away in your bag for the duration of your holiday. Of course, you could cross your fingers for an iron in your hotel room. Or you could take matters into your own hands and invest in your own travel iron.

When it comes to choosing a travel iron, portability and convenience are paramount. Look for compact and lightweight options that won't take up much space in your luggage otherwise your biggest problem will be washing your clothes rather than ironing them. A foldable handle or a retractable cord can be a great space-saving feature and many newer models include these.

It's also worth paying attention to the power source requirements of your next destination. Opting for a dual voltage travel iron that can switch between different voltage settings, ensuring compatibility across various countries, is your best bet for overcoming this issue around the world.

You'll also want to keep in mind the iron's heating capabilities. Look for a model that heats up quickly and maintains a consistent temperature for effective wrinkle removal. Adjustable temperature controls allow you to adapt to different fabrics and avoid damaging delicate materials, while a non-stick soleplate is also essential for a smooth glide over your clothes without leaving marks or residue.

Pulling together plenty of travel-friendly features like its generous 1.9M power cord, allowing you more freedom of movement when ironing, this small iron has a dual voltage and tucks away easily in your bag.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

john lewis travel accessories

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

john lewis travel accessories

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

john lewis travel accessories

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

john lewis travel accessories

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Great balls of fire: Watch incredible CCTV footage of industrial furnace EXPLOSION that showers workers with wave of molten steel sparks

Russian blast sees three bombarded with carpet of molten steel

john lewis travel accessories

  • 10:14, 14 Aug 2012
  • Updated 10:16, 14 Aug 2012

CCTV footage showing an industrial furnace showering workers with molten metal is shocking viewers of a video-sharing website.

Believed to have occurred at one of the metallurgy manufacturing plant in the Russian city Elektrostal, east of Moscow, the undated video shows three men sprayed with a wave of sparks in the intensive blast.

With no stories filed by any international news agency, the fate of the workers remains unknown. Several figures can be seen walking about following the explosion.

Commenters on Live Leak, the site to which the video uploaded, have speculated that the incident occurred after water – used to cool the machinery’s copper induction coil – mixed with electricity and the molten steek.

Another user said: “Reminds me of the time a tractor battery blew up on us and spewed battery acid all over the place... we were just as dumbfounded as these guys were. No injuries to us, but ruined clothing for sure.”
