Tanay Rizal Day Tour: Itinerary and Travel Tips

Tanay Rizal is one of the best day trip destinations from the metro. It’s only 2 hours away and so it’s very accessible, and it offers a lot of nature attractions and activities. Here’s our experience including an updated Tanay Rizal day tour itinerary.

This Tanay Rizal day tour only costed us P650 each, excluding lunch.

Hali and I went on this day trip in 2015. There was an upcoming holiday and as luck have it, I came across a tour to Tanay for only P650 per person.

The group met up in Cubao at 6AM. We drove for about 3 hours to Tanay. I was asleep most of the times, but whenever I’d wake up I would see the high mountains and then, on the way to our first destination (Calinawan Cave), a long rough road with dense vegetation on both sides. I love being in nature and I took this as a good omen.

Calinawan Cave is a historical cave that was used during the Filipino-American times.

The tour inside the cave only takes an hour or less. It is beginner-friendly and so it’s ideal for everyone. You just have to be watch your step because it’s dark inside.

Our local guide Kuya Adam gave us an entertaining and educational tour of this nature preserve. Apparently, this is where the Filipinos and Americans agreed to join arms to end the Spanish rule. Historically, this gesture was a sham, but this is not the place for an in-depth discussion.

Kuya Adam also explained the difference between stalactites and stalagmites and how these are formed. We also saw fruit bats and the holes they make in the ceilings. I think I’m missing something here. How are they drilling/punching these holes?

We only explored Levels 1 and 2 of the cave.

Levels 3-5 are open during summer and are more difficult, with some parts requiring the guest to crawl and such. Levels 6-7 are permanently inaccessible, from when the tunnels were bombed by Japanese soldiers. Once upon a time though, one can go through this tunnels and travel for 9 days to go to Montalban, Rizal! What an underground adventure that must be like.

It was nice to see that Calinawan cave is being preserved by a local organization. Sadly, before this was set up, a local network company filmed a local series here and irresponsibly left silver glitters and fakes stalactites. The rest of the cave remained intact, with minerals still able to produce new cave formations, which will take thousands of years to be completed.

This is one of the first caves I’d visited, and looking back, it really made an impression on me. It made me appreciate other caves in the Philippines that were properly preserved (e.g., Diamond Cave in Quirino ).

Not far from Calinawan cave are the twin attractions Daranak Falls and Batlag Falls.

Daranak Falls is a government-owned park and it’s one of the most visited destinations in Tanay. Here you can swim, eat in one of the alfresco or indoor tables, or just relax.

When we arrived, we were awed by the huge stream falling down the falls into an aqua-blue basin. However, there were too many people, so we decided to go to the more-secluded Batlag Falls just a few walks away.

There are only picnic tables in Batlag falls and none of the man-made facilities such as stores in Daranak falls. Batlag falls is a refresher from the September heat but isn’t a place for regular swimming. Similar with other falls, the stones around were smooth and slippery. The ground underneath was uneven and hid rocks of different sizes. It’s best to wear aqua shoes or trekking sandals rather than ordinary slippers or going barefoot.

We went astray from the main falls and followed the water trail down south and then on a parallel northward direction from Batlag falls. There was nobody else with us, and the water on those parts seemed undisturbed. There were water insects and cobwebs. There were flying insects that might have been butterflies or dragonflies. it was difficult to tell since the wings were bigger and vividly colored.

We also found a pool, with corners too precise to be natural, but just like the other small pools and mini-falls, it too seemed abandoned.

After several minutes of trudging across undisturbed waters, we clambered up a high slope and went back to the familiar noise of people bathing in the main falls.

We intended to stay until late in Batlag Falls, but after a short discussion we agreed to visit the new Tanay windmill in Rizal as well. The Pililla windmills were a recent construction and only began operating summer of 2015.

There was nothing to do here but relax, check out the windmills and feel the strong winds brush your hair. It offers a full view of Laguna de Bay and the surrounding hills filled with white seed heads swaying with the wind. It was the perfect way to end our day trip.

• Treasure Mountain . This is a mountain campsite where you can witness the sea of clouds — a popular spot for sunrise viewing. There is no hiking involved to reach the view deck. The campsite has a restaurant where you can order silog meals for breakfast. There are other activities available for those who wish to stay longer, including an Obstacle Course with Spider’s Web Activity and visits to The Apiary Farm, Bosay Falls, and Laiban Falls.
• Bakasyunan Resort . Often referred to as Bali of Tanay, this resort features a pool and IG-worthy corners like bird nests.
• El Patio Razon . Want to experience kawa hot bath without having to book a flight to Tibiao ? This is the place to be!
• Regina Rica . A popular pilgrimage site in Tanay, Rizal. You can look at the religious displays and explore the surroundings.

From EDSA, it takes about 2 hours to get to Tanay, Rizal.

• From EDSA Shaw, head to the terminal in front of Starmall and ride a van to Tanay (P70 per person). Alternatively, you may also ride a jeep (about P50 per person).

If you know your way around Tanay, you can commute via jeepneys to your destination.

You can also charter a tricycle for the tour. Head to the public market or supermarket and look for the tricycle lines. However, it may be challenging to find a driver that will take you to different destinations especially since some of them are quiet far (e.g., Pililla Windmills is not part of Tanay, but Pililla municipality).

That saying, the best way to explore different destinations in Tanay is by private car.

• Things to bring: Trekking sandals and headlight/flashlight for caving. Bring swimwear and change of clothes. If you are visiting Regina Rica, make sure that you are properly dressed. Don’t forget to bring snacks and drinking water.
• Tanay is a great place for outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, visiting waterfalls, and more. If you want to experience more of Tanay, consider booking for a longer stay.

Tanay Travel Guide: A Mountaineer’s Playground

Tanay , Rizal is just a stone throw away from the Metropolis and yet it seems to be always overlooked by tourists. Unbeknownst to many, the town boasts of numerous attractions that will surely delight outdoor junkies, most specially nature lovers and adventurous ones.

For a place that is only an hour away from Metro Manila, particularly from Mandaluyong, Pasig, Quezon City or Marikina, Tanay offers a new and different dimension away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Situated at the southern tip of Sierra Madre Mountain Range, the town is dotted with numerous waterfalls, caves, river system and picturesque mountains, making it a favorite go-to place of those residing in the Metro.

Go caving in Calinawan Cave; dip in the cold waters of Daranak , Batlag or Kay-ibon Falls; hike and swim to Tinipak Rock and Spring; pay a visit to Regina Rosali Institute for Contemplation in Asia or simply Regina RICA; catch the sunset at the Parola; trek to Mount Daraitan, Mount Batolusong or Nagpatong Rock; get close to Masungi Rock Formation; or drop by the centuries-old San Ildefonso Parish Church.

How to Go to Tanay

Going there via public transportation is as easy as breeze. If you are coming from Metro Manila, just go to the transport terminal in Starmall in the corner of Shaw Boulevard and EDSA or in EDSA Central Crossing near Unilever. Vans, buses and jeepneys going to Tanay Public Market are stationed there, travel time takes at least one-and-a-half hour and fare is around P70 for van and P53 for jeepney. From Tanay Public Market, flag a tricycle to take you to any attraction you want to visit. Public transportation going to Tanay is available as early as 4AM and as late as 10PM or depending on the passenger traffic.

There are also van from LRT Santolan in Marikina, fare is also P70 and travel time is also at least one-and-a-half hour. Meanwhile, from Araneta Center Cubao, take a jeepney to Cogeo or Antipolo and transfer to another jeepney going to Tanay.

Going Around and Away

Tricycle is the primary mode of transport around the town, minimum fare is P8. But most attractions are long ride and requires special trip. Daranak Falls, Batlag Falls, Calinawan Cave or Regina Rica is P100 one-way for a trike that can fit at most three (3) passengers. Tinipak Rock in Daraitan is at P500 one-way but there is public jeepneys at the terminal that go there at 1PM and 3PM.

The best way to tour the attractions of Tanay is to charter a tricycle or a van. A trike can tour you to Regina Rica, Daranak and Batlag Falls, Calinawan Cave, Tanay Church and Parola for P400 for six (6) hours, maximum passenger is four persons. Jeepneys and vans can also be rented for as low as P750 to tour you in the nearby attractions of Tanay.

Going back to Metro, just catch a jeep or van at the transport terminal near Tanay Public Market or along the main thoroughfares of the town.

Where to Stay in Tanay

While Tanay can be done on a day trip from Manila, there are also hotels and resorts in town if you wish to spend overnight and explore more of the place. Some of these resorts are already destinations that feature facilities and various activities that are perfect for team building.

For budget travelers, Sampaloc Inn near Sampaloc Crossing has Economy Rooms for as low as P700 for 12 hours stay and P900 for one whole day. It gained positive reviews from a lot of travelers due to its accessibility and cheap rates.

Hi! I would just like to ask are there trips to tanay at 2 or 1 am in the morning in starmall shaw?

From starmall shaw blvd, take a jeepney or van (im not sure). Drop off point is tanay public market. From there you can ride another jeepney going to sampaloc or daraitan (P50-P80,i guess) or you can take a motorcycle ride (P400-P500, kontrata kasi). And it will take you to your chosen destination (masungi, daraitan, tinipak, batulusong, etc). Enjoy!!!!

I’m from Rizal too and we love going to Tanay every weekend for a good sight seeing and relaxing place. They have a new attraction and that’s the Wind Farms in Pililia, it’s like the Wind Mills in Ilocos. Perfect for bikers, you can also have a hot cup of coffee from the cafe inside the Wind Farm, yup there’s a cafe once you reach the top of the viewing site. 🙂

Your site is always helpful…just an update, we stayed at the newly constructed cabanas at Tanay Hills coffee beanery and grill house just adjacent to Sampaloc Inn. We got it at P1,500 per night with breakfast (introductory price) but the place is clean, air conditioned, with swimming pool. the food at their restaurant is good and reasonably priced. all very near going to Pililla Wind Farm.

Moreover, it can only take about two hours depending on traffic conditions to get to Tanay from the capital city.

The Masungi Geo-Reserve

This is a conservation area and a hiking trail in the middle of a formation of karst rock. This trail has different obstacles that include caves, hanging bridges, giant hammock, and viewing decks. This is a 300-hectare park that is geographically a portion of Baras which is just within the border of Tanay.

The Daranak Falls

The most popular tourist spot when visiting Tanay is Daranak Falls. It is 14 meters in height with refreshing cascade having a deep basin great for swimming. This is naturally famous for local and foreign tourists, so this should be crowded with people enjoying the sights, swimming, and having picnics all over the weekend. Weekdays are the best days to visit this location to maximize your experience.

The Batlag Falls

Another attraction is the Batlag Falls, which is a secluded portion of Tanay. This location has flowing streams and huge tree perfect for photo enthusiasts. This place is owned by a private institution so it is expected to be require a bit more expensive entrance fees. Nevertheless, it can offer a place with less people crowding the area at any given day.

The Kinabuan Falls

This portion of Tanay is located in Sta. Ines. Kinabuan Falls is perfect for mountaineers and bikers seeking for off-the-beaten path adventures. To reach this location, you will come across several shallow streams and rivers.

The Calinawan Cave

If you are fond of caves, Tanay has one that is just a few minutes away from Daranak Falls. Calinawan cave has a historical value particularly during the Japanese regime. This was used by Filipino resistance fighters to fend away the colonizers on many occasions.

The Daraitan River

If you are still craving for more attractions, the Daraitan River should be a great addition to your trip. This is a river that has been hidden along the mountain ranges of the Sierra Madre. According to sources, this has been dubbed the cleanest inland body of water in the region that should be ideal for trekkers, mountaineers, and backpackers.

TANAY: Must do activities in a day

Looking for a one-day road trip and activity? Go for Tanay, Rizal. Being near from NCR, this high altitude town offers breathtaking destinations and activities that would surely feed your adventurous souls. Winding mountain roads and pine trees are my favorite sceneries as we traverse the roads leading to different destinations. My heartfelt thanks to Sir Jeff Pino of Tanay Tourism Office for organizing this familiarization tour. Despite the Southwest Monsoon, we are blessed to have a fine weather on the day itself.

How to commute to Tanay? 

There are jeepneys and FX from Cubao and Starmall going to Tanay. From there, you can charter a tricycle to bring you to your destination of choice.

What to explore in Tanay in a day?

San Ildefonso de Toledo Parish Church – one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and its beautiful facade is picture-perfect.  It also has one of the intricate retablo I have seen in my travel history.

Declared last 2001 as a National Cultural Treasure Church by the  National Commission for Culture and the Arts, it is one of the sites to see in Tanay. Other pilgrimage sites to see in Tanay is the Regina Rica, one of the crowd drawer site in Tanay.

Daranak Falls – this iconic waterfalls of Tanay is one of the picture-perfect destinations of the town. It is a developed nature park that can cater from youngsters to our senior tourists who want to experience Mother Nature’s beauty. From developed road networks, erected huts, available stores, and multilevel function halls, this spot would engage your entire barkada or family. The main cascade of the waterfalls is a sheer drop of 14 meters to a deep icy cold catchbasin for bathing. If not swimmer, best to don lifevest. There are footbridges that connect both sides of the park.

How to go to Daranak Falls?

From Cubao: take Cogeo bound jeep or van. Take another Sampaloc bound jeep. Once on Sampaloc Market, charter PATODA tricycle to Daranak Falls. Php200 with maximum of 4 passengers.

From Starmall: Take jeepney or FX to Tanay. Once in Tanay market, charter PATODA tricycle to Daranak Falls.

Calinawan Cave –  a historic cave with a developed surrounding ready for the influx of visitors. Prior to actual spelunking, visitors must register on the adjacent hall and attend a short briefing about rules and regulations for safety. Also, pay the registration fee and choose a snug-fitting helmet.

Its main cave entrance is situated a few steps from the road and features a descending footpath. The cave system has seven explorable levels. However, during rainy season, the lowest 3 levels could be inundated and unsafe for spelunking. We were given the opportunity to experience the first two levels.

The first level has some illumination from a naturally occurring orifice. There are natural rock formations depicting a human face and a knelt person.

At the second level, the trail leads to a low ceiling chamber requiring explorers to kneel or duck walk to another end. There is also a phallic rock formation at this level. The exit trail features an ascending rocky and slippery trail leading to a high ceiling exit. This where explorers usually take a good photo thanks to beautiful natural diffused natural lighting. From the cave exit, it takes less than 5 minute walk back to the registration area.

The historical significance of the Calinawan Cave dates back from during World War 2, when the Japanese forces used the cave as a camp for two months before their actual surrender. The cave was discovered last 1572 without an identifiable person in record. However, the year 1901 when Mr. Felipe Matalino rediscovered the cave system. It is said that the seven-level or layer ends up in Wawa Dam in Montalban. However, this exit is bombed, apparently for protection. The etymology of “Calinawan” was derived from “an agreement of Filipino and American forces made clear to fight the Spaniards”.

Nagpatong Rock – located in Barangay Cuyambay, Nagpatong Rock is actually a side trip to Mt. Masungki. It features two towers of colossal rocks seemingly and perfectly stacked on top of each other, thanks to its naturally occurring horizontal dents lining the main rock tower. From the jump-off point, the average trekking time is about two to three hours, depending on personal pace. The trail starts with a dirt road under a canopy of trees. From there, you will pass by rice plantations and through a thick forest. There are portions of the trail that are concreted. The ascending part of the trail features an established rocky footpath with steep inclines.

Where to Eat in Tanay?

Rambulls Fastfood and Restaurant – a “bakahan” restaurant that is conveniently located beside the main road. I have eaten already here before and loved its bulalo! Another feature of this restaurant is a saddle placed in the middle of dining where you can take a photograph.

Pico de Pino Restaurant – this is where we have light snacks after our Nagpatong rock adventure. It is conveniently located along Marikina-Infanta highway and has local products for pasalubong. 3. Paintball Battleground

Another attraction offered by ATV Adventure Rizal is Paintball Battleground , which allows one hour of use of the battlefield with your friends or family for less than P500!

4. Pinto Art Museum

I may be biased but I think I am not alone when I say Pinto Art Museum is one of the most picturesque contemporary museums in the country!

Established in 2010, Pinto Art Museum was born from the art collection of its founder, neurologist Dr. Joven Cuanang. From the museum’s name pinto , which translates to ‘door’, the aim is to bridge diverse cultures and perspectives through arts.

The museum presents various types of arts — sculptures, paintings, installations, mixed media, and more — which revolve around religion, historical events, and different modernist movements. It also showcases the works of Filipino contemporary artists. Another popular feature that you should not miss when you visit is its in-house restaurant, the Cafe Rizal .

Designed by artist Antonio Leaño, the whole museum complex is composed of white structures enclosed in a two-hectare botanical garden. It exudes a serene atmosphere. It’s not surprising that this is one of the most Instagrammed museums in the Philippines. The place is also open to couples who want to do a prenuptial shoot. Contact the management for the rates.

5. Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs

Officially declared a National Cultural Treasure in 1973 by the National Museum of the Philippines, the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs site offers a glimpse into the prehistoric Philippines.

The ancient carvings are preserved on a rock wall along the boundary of Angono and Binangonan. A tunnel leading to the petroglyphs is located a few meters off the road (Col. Guido Road). The rock wall is protected by a fence but you can still marvel at the carvings from a wooden viewing deck. This was first discovered by national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco in 1965.

6. Masungi Georeserve

Opened to the public in 2015, the Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area managed and protected by concerned and passionate groups and individuals. It aims to promote a mutually healthy coexistence between nature and people and to educate visitors about the importance of conservation through sustainable geotourism.

Located on the southern part of the Sierra Madre mountain range, the georeserve has piqued the curiosity of weekend warriors, especially those who are passionate about the environment and those interested in geology.

The whole area cradles limestone caves, rock formations, karst cliffs, and rainforests. The park has eco-trails, rope courses, and hanging bridges that connect some of the key points inside the conservation area. The Sapot (cobweb) and the Duyan (hammock) are two of the most popular features inside the park.

The park also has several viewpoints, from where you can admire stunning views of the mountains, the park, and even Laguna de Bay in some spots. Note that Masungi Georeserve offers different trails and experiences — Discovery Trail, Legacy Trail, and Garden Picnic. Check the inclusions, then choose the one that suits your preference

Please wear comfortable clothes and footwear with good grip, and respect and follow the policies when inside the park. Prior reservation is needed. No walk-ins.

7. Hinulugang Taktak

Designated as a national park in 1990, the Hinulugang Taktak Protected Landscape covers three hectares of verdant forest. It was named after the Hinulugang Taktak waterfalls, which is obviously the highlight of the park.

Easily accessible from the town center, it is an iconic landmark in Antipolo and said to be one of the most visited national parks in the country. The trails leading to the falls have been developed to make it easier for tourists, especially seniors and PWDs, to access.

The area surrounding the falls has become a picnic site, adorned with tables and gazebos. There is also a designated pool area for those who want to swim. If you want to trek or do some challenging activities, you can check out the new facilities like wall climbing, rappelling, and other rope courses.

Both the local government and DENR are continuously doing their job to protect and maintain the park. Let us help by following the rules and regulations.

Most travelers visit this and the nearby Pinto Art Museum in a day.

8. Daranak Falls

The 14-meter high Daranak Falls is one of the popular natural attractions in Tanay and a favored summer destination for locals and tourists alike.

Located at the foot of densely forested Tanay mountains, the picturesque area — with Daranak falls as its centerpiece — features cascading waters, rivers, ponds, and a huge natural pool. There are picnic sheds and tables for rent.

Note that plastic, styrofoam, alcoholic beverages, and pets are not allowed. Please do not litter and clean as you go.

9. Batlag Falls

Not too far from Daranak Falls is another set of cascades with swimming holes — Batlag Falls .

You just need to trek uphill and deeper into the thick jungle to reach this beauty. The cool water rushes down from a limestone cliff. The water basins (one shallow and one relatively deeper) serve as swimming areas. Try to explore farther from the main pools and you might find a less crowded swimming spot.

The best time to go is morning when there are fewer people. Bring your own food and clean as you go.

10. Mt. Daraitan

Part of the Sierra Madre mountain range, Mount Daraitan straddles the town of Tanay in Rizal and the town of General Nakar in Quezon province.

Daraitan is characterized by lush forests and limestone formations, which dominate the summit. From the zenith, enjoy the breathtaking view of the snake-like form of Tinipak River and the Sierra Madre mountain range.

There are two trails — a short-but-challenging trail and a long-but-relaxed trail. Going down, you can either trace back your trail or take the trail down to Tinipak River . You can check out the nearby cave if you still have time.

Camping is allowed. If you go on a day hike, please be there early because there is a limited number of people allowed per day . Those who didn’t make it on time will be directed to other peaks like Mount Binutasan, Mount Lugang, or Mount Maynoba.

From Tanay town center, you can hire a tricycle to take you directly to Daraitan’s barangay hall. The rate is around P500, good for 5-6 pax.

11. Tinipak River

This mountain river meanders below the Sierra Madre range. This natural attraction is a usual side trip destination for those hiking Mount Daraitan. The clear water flows through smooth limestone rocks and boulders.

Tourists enjoy taking a dip and swimming in the refreshing water. Not far from the main swimming area is a cave with a small cascade forming a natural pool inside.

Wear aqua shoes or footwear with good grip as trails can be slippery.

You need to register your group here and then you will be assigned a guide or two, depending on the size of your group. 12. Pililla Wind Farm

Encompassing over 4,500 hectares of the hilly landscape, the Pililla Wind Farm flaunts its colossal wind turbines that tower over the landscape. All 27 wind turbines stand like gigantic sentinels, providing an incredibly scenic tourist destination near Manila and, more importantly, electricity.

Managed by Alternergy Philippine Holdings Corporation (APHC), the whole wind farm is said to produce almost 150 Gigawatt hours of electricity annually.

Note that there’s not much shade here, so if you are visiting at noon or early afternoon, make sure you bring an umbrella or any protection from the sun. There’s a designated view deck where you can view the turbines at a higher altitude and a small information building.

If you want to view the turbines from the hill across the viewing deck, you have to pay P10 to trek up the hill. Even from afar, they are a sight to behold, especially during sunset and early morning. The place is also popular among bikers.

13. Higantes Festival

Celebrated annually in the town of Angono, Higantes Festival is a two-day feast known for its giant papier-mâché puppets, which represent the malevolent feudal lords (hacienda owners) during the Spanish regime era. Eventually, it developed into a celebration for Pope St. Clement I.

During the festival, the titan-like papier-mâché puppets, representing the barangays of Angono, are paraded throughout the streets.

14. Botong Francisco’s Ancestral House

National Artist for Visual Art Carlos “Botong” Francisco is renowned for his vivid paintings depicting folk scenes and values. His works serve as significant reminders and records of our culture and heritage.

The ancestral house was opened to the public in the 1970s with no definite opening hours, making the masterpieces and memoirs accessible to the public, a symbolic gesture of offering himself, a National Artist, through his works to the Filipino people.

The highlight is the artist’s intact studio where some of his earlier works and sketches are displayed, along with his well-preserved personal belongings and collections. As a muralist, he pioneered this art form in the Philippines.

Aside from being an artist, he is also a scriptwriter whose notable works include Manuel Conde’s, Genghis Khan. The ancestral house/museum is managed by his grandson, artist Carlos “Totong” Francisco II.

15. Angono Mural Street

Home of prominent artists and museums, Angono is hailed as the “Art Capital of the Philippines”. Visiting national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco’s ancestral house will lead you to a stretch of road marked by street art — the Doña Aurora Street, also known as the Angono Mural Street .

Charlie Anorico, Gerry Batang, and Ebong Pinpino are the artists behind the murals and sculptured walls flanking Doña Aurora Street. These murals are based on the masterpieces of Botong Francisco with texts from the song “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”, which is another cultural treasure composed by national artist Maestro Lucio San Pedro .

16. Bahay na Bato

Said to be the oldest house in Pililla, the centuries-old Bahay na Bato (House of Stone) will transport you back to the Spanish colonial period where this type of architecture became prevalent.

It is located near St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church. The combination of stone masonry and woodwork for both the exterior and the interior are intact, surviving the test of time. Aside from seeing antique furniture and architectural gems, the place is a popular stop for photo sessions.

17. Calinawan Cave

Calinawan Cave is a must-visit not only for adventure seekers but also for history buffs.

The multi-level cave system harbors remarkable rock formations (stalagmites and stalactites), delighting spelunkers and curious travelers. The first two levels are quite easy to explore, good for beginners and kids. However, the succeeding levels require scrambling and getting through small openings. It’s even more challenging when the grounds are wet, making it slippery. Wear comfortable footwear and bring extra clothes, just in case.

The cave is believed to be one of the underground meeting places of the revolutionary katipuneros , plotting steps to overthrow the Spanish colonizers. It is best to explore with a guide. If you book a tour, you will be given protective gear like a helmet and flashlight. The guide will share stories and information as you explore the cave.

18. Balaw Balaw Restaurant’s Soup No. 5

Balaw Balaw Restaurant serves Filipino cuisine, boasting twelve kinds of sinigang and exotic fares on the menu. Some of the exotic food are itik (duck), sinabawang balut , ginataang kuhol , crickets, and frog cuisine. Note that some exotic food items are seasonal like the kamaro (crickets), uok , and bibingkang abnoy (spoiled duck egg).

But adventurous eaters come to this restaurant for one thing — the exotic Soup #5 , notorious for its star protein, cow’s balls. Let’s just say that it is an acquired taste!

The restaurant also features an art gallery, so you can check out the collection while there.

19. Treasure Mountain

Effortless sea of clouds near Manila! That’s what pulls campers and day-trippers to this high-altitude educational campsite.

If you’ve always wanted to admire a sea of clouds in person but you don’t have the time, energy, stamina, or interest in hiking, this is a great alternative! Assuming the weather cooperates, that is. There are times when visitors won’t get to see the sea of clouds because it’s rainy (or other reasons), but the place still offers a panoramic view of the lush Sierra Madre mountain range.

Several viewpoints can be found inside the camp, so just choose your spot, Be careful when you climb some rock formations and cliffs as some of them are sharp and slippery. You can also try the rope courses installed within the campsite, ride the ATV, or swim in the pool. There are restrooms and a small restaurant near the entrance.

If you are camping overnight, you can bring your own tent and food — a corkage fee of P350 for food and P50 per alcoholic bottle. Pack some warmers and your trusty jacket because the weather up there is usually chilly. Please dispose of your trash properly. Note that the sea of clouds usually occurs between 5AM and 8AM.

20. Antipolo Church

The province of Rizal is known for its pilgrimage and religious sites. In fact, the provincial capital, Antipolo, is hailed as a Pilgrimage City.

One of Antipolo’s historical and religious landmarks is the Antipolo Cathedral , officially named National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage and also the Immaculate Conception Parish.

The church was completed in the 17th century but has undergone several reconstructions and renovations over the years. It houses the wooden statue of Mary. It attracts huge crowds, mostly pilgrims and devotees, during Holy Week and the Pilgrimage Season.

Don’t leave without a quick stop at the Victory Pasalubong Center just next to the cathedral and grab some suman (sticky rice cake wrapped in leaves, usually banana leaves), kasuy (cashew nuts), and other local products!

21. Phillip’s Sanctuary

Phillip’s Sanctuary is one of the favored eco-tourism, eco-adventure, and retreat destinations in Antipolo. It provides modern comforts and amenities in a natural, raw setting, letting the guests enjoy nature without sacrificing convenience.

The whole property features campsites, an agroforestry farm, function areas, an organic fruit farm, aquaculture, lodgings, a chapel, an honesty store, swimming pools, a restaurant, and greenery! It also has amenities for team building and big group events — obstacle courses, rope courses, zipline, bike trail, fishing area, and kayaking/rafting area.

22. Mount Purro Nature Reserve

If you are an avid fan of forest bathing, you might find Mount Purro Nature Reserve a worthwhile nature tripping destination. Surrounded by the flora and fauna of the Sierra Madre, the mountain farm has scenic hiking paths and trails, snaking through the dense rainforest and along the river. You can even take the one that leads to Malvar’s Peak for more breathtaking views.

The farm has charming small gardens, unique swings, and gazebos where you can just chill and appreciate nature’s beauty. There are also facilities like rope courses, a swimming pool, a zipline, a play area, and lodgings.

But the most interesting thing about Mount Purro is its roots. The owner and founder, Toto Malvar, was inspired by his mother and grandfather to take care of the environment, particularly the Sierra Madre. Through reforestation projects and rehabilitation of the Upper Marikina Watershed, the farm not only protects the environment but also helps the Dumagat Tribe by providing a livelihood for them in the process.

23. Palo Alto Falls

Located within the 200-hectare Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates , the 60-foot Palo Alto Falls is another cascade destination to add to your list of attractions near Manila.

Managed by the Sta. Lucia Land, the falls area is open to the public. At the entrance, you will have to take more than 200 steps to reach the falls. The cascade’s water basin, bordered with cemented boulders and stones, serves as a swimming area, with another pool right below it.

The area is well-maintained with cottages and tables for rent and concrete steps and paths. Although development is apparent, it doesn’t take away from the beauty of nature. This is popular among motorcycle riders and cyclists too.

24. Blanco Family Art Museum

Jose “Pitok” V. Blanco is the godson and prodigy of the late national artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco. Together with his equally talented wife Loreto “Loring” Perez-Blanco and their seven children, they formed the illustrious Family of Painters , whose works celebrate Filipino culture, history, and traditions.

After their family exhibit at the National Museum in 1978, the family decided to make their paintings accessible to the public. It was first established in 1980, but the actual museum was launched in 1990. It houses a huge collection of the Blanco family’s masterpieces.

The Province of Rizal is a mountainous region located just at the east of Quezon City — making it an ideal destination for quick trips near the Metro . There are many tourist spots and things to do in Rizal, especially in Antipolo and Tanay areas. Tanay’s tourism charm beckons

TANAY, Rizal—Local government officials here remain optimistic the rebound of tourism in this destination east of Manila continues steadily after a hiccup due to Covid-19.

While some visitors and tourists, mostly Filipinos, consider Tanay as “the next Tagaytay,” officials like Tanay Planning and Development Officer Jefferey M. Pino want to avoid such comparison.

“We have our own identity, we are Tanay,” Pino told the BusinessMirror .

And that self-image is shown in the numbers provided by the Tanay Tourism Office (TTO): last year saw the number of visitors to local tourist attractions—the Daranak Falls, for one—hitting roughly 4.81 million.

This was an increase of about three million from the number of tourist arrivals of nearly 1.54 million in 2021. The rise in the number was posted after the government issued travel guidelines, TTO and Public Information Officer Joicee Jules B. Gapido told the BusinessMirror .

“ Naapektuhan ang tourism pero somehow doon nagsulputan ang gastronomic tourism, along different parts of Tanay [Tourism was affected but gastronomic tourism started to develop along different parts of Tanay],” Gapido said.

“Tourism is bouncing back, ngayong taong 2023 maganda ang pasok ng [there’s a promising trend in] arrivals ng tourism,” she added.

TTO data showed that the number of tourists hit a peak of about 5.13 million in 2019. This plunged to about 1.24 million as government imposed lockdown measures in March of 2020 to stem the spread of Covid-19.

But things appear to be looking up as the TTO recorded arrivals reaching 387,802 in January this year.

The number of visitors staying a night in this first-class municipality also dropped to 138,416 in 2020 from about 1.015 million in 2019.

The number of guests staying overnight in 2021 inched up to 160,941 and even tripled to 349,969 last year. A total of 33,670 travelers have already spent the night in Tanay last January, TTO data showed.

This steady increase prompted the Department of Tourism (DOT) Calabarzon office to recognize Tanay for having the third-most number of overnight stay arrivals in 2021 and second highest in the region for the most number of same-day arrivals also that year. The DOT-Calabarzon also noted Tanay’s “relentless commitment to the enhancement and development of local tourism, reinforcing service standards and consistent generation of tourism information and data.”

According to Gapido, the municipality is known for its “breathtaking” hiking trails. She said many recognize Tanay as the “Home of Adventure and Nature Experience,” especially with its flagship Daranak Falls.

Gapido admitted the lockdowns slashed the number of hikers. Nonetheless, with the popularity of “glamping”—a more luxurious type of camping compared to traditional stay in outdoor tents—the number of campgrounds and related businesses progressively rose.

She believes “the pandemic caused a great deal of stress for many individuals who needed to unwind by spending time in nature.”

GAPIDO emphasized that tourism is important to Tanay as the activity contributes to revenues of businesses and, of course, the local government.

“The more tourists, the more income we will get. Bukod sa binabayad nila, makakatulong sila in terms of kumain sila sa mga restaurants, bumili sila sa tindahan   [Apart from the fees, tourists help when they eat at restaurants and buy at stores here],” she explained to the BusinessMirror .

Likewise, Tanay also earns from its Community-Based Rural Tourism (CBRT) program. Under this, a visitor must fork over P100 prior to entry to a tourist attraction or hiking.

Gapido said of the fee, P50 goes to the local government of Tanay, P30 to the barangay where the attraction is located or covers the hiking trail and P20 to indigenous peoples (IP).

She said revenues from the CBRT eventually fund the safeguarding tasks of the mountains, as these are where most tourists go.

Prior to the lockdown, the TTO recorded about P8.195 million in revenues from the CBRT program in 2019. Despite the lockdowns a year later, revenues from CBRT fees collection hit about P2.064 million.

The revenues, through the CBRT program, inched to P2.512 million in 2021 and to nearly P3.409 million last year after the Tanay local government allowed local tourism operations to return to normal.

The Tanay local government expects to further increase the revenue share from the CBRT, as there’s a proposal to charge campers with an ecotourism fee. The proposal is currently under third reading at the town council.

ACCORDING to Pino, part of the fees charged through the CBRT goes to the training and education of the Dumagat IPs who call the mountains of Tanay their home.

He said they had to wean the Dumagats from charcoal production as this has led to deforestation.

Pino estimates the local government has trained about 50 percent of the total population of IPs in tour guiding. Non-Dumagats were also trained to appreciate and highlight the culture and life of the Dumagat IP tribe.

“ Kailangan Filipino brand of service ang binibigay natin [What we provide must be a Filipino brand of service],” he said.

Gapido added that the local government of Tanay also provides training and seminars to restaurants and businesses accredited by the DOT. She said the sessions aim to make these institutions’ executives and employees understand and speak more about the local culture and taste, like Tanay cuisine. The seminars also emphasize hospitality services to enhance tourists’ experience.

Documents that the Tanay Business Permit and Licensing Office provided to the BusinessMirror revealed there are currently 11 registered hotels and resorts, 67 restaurants and 24 authorized campsites have met the standards and clearances of the Tanay local government and the DOT.

Gapido said that keeping standards for businesses engaged in tourism-related activities is significant as this supports the local economy and its development.

“We are reminding them; we are requiring them to be DOT-accredited establishments, because the DOT sets the standards,” she added.

AS Tanay witnesses the continuing revival of its tourism sector, Gapido believes the local government still has an elbow room for further growth and investment.

Nonetheless, she said investors must brace for a ton of paper work.

“If you have plans of doing business in the upland barangays, at lalo na kung under ito ng protected areas, marami kang clearances na dapat gawin. Kasi kailangan ma -balance ’ yung kita ng pera , balance ng ekonomiya at balance ng environment [If you have plans to do business in the upland barangays, especially if it’s in protected areas, you must secure several clearances because we need to balance profit, the economy and the environment],” Gapido told the BusinessMirror .

Tanay constitutes 16.91 percent of Rizal’s total land area. The municipality also forms part of the 26,125.64-hectare Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape. This protected area includes parts of Antipolo City and Baras, Rodriguez, San Mateo, Rizal.

Gapido believes an investor won’t incur losses due to Tanay’s natural attractions and continuous influx of tourists.

“ Magandang mag -invest ng farm tourism dito sa Tanay [Farm tourism is a good investment here],” she said.

Indeed, Tanay beckons to the weary: look East, and you won’t regret it.
