Reba Mcentire Blake Shelton and carrie underwood performing side by side in compsite image

It doesn’t matter where you live in the U.S. — in 2023, the heartland will come to you.

From January through December, some of the biggest names in country music are heading to venues all over North America to sling their greatest hits for their biggest fans.

We’re talking Garth , Kenny , Reba , Carrie , Morgan — you know, all the stars you know by just their first name.

Plus, of course, George Strait .

You can’t forget George freakin’ Strait.

So, get out your cowboy hat and boots, and we’ll give you want the skinny on each of these upcoming tours.

George Strait’s “Stadium Tour”

Runs May 6 through Aug. 5

Strait doesn’t have a lot of concerts on his Stadium Tour . In fact, he’s only playing eight shows this coming summer. But they’ll all be biggies. Mega stars Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town will be joining him at each of these mega gigs. Expect a night of sing-a-long hits and good vibes.

Reba McEntire’s “Reba: Live In Concert Tour”

Runs March 9 through April 15

Although you may have recently seen Reba in the third season of ABC’s “Big Sky,” she’ll be taking a break from acting for a 14-concert spring arena tour where she’ll likely bust out all your favorite Reba classics. Terri Clark and The Isaacs are slated to open for the three-time Grammy winner.

Morgan Wallen’s “One Night at a Time Tour”

Runs April 15 through Oct. 7

Wallen’s upcoming 37-concert tour is one of the year’s most hotly anticipated. Featuring openers Parker McCollum, Hardy, Ernest, and Bailey Zimmerman, Wallen took to Instagram to share his excitement, saying, “2023 is gonna be a special year… I got a lot in store for y’all.” Wanna find out what that means? We suggest seeing him live.

Kenny Chesney’s “I Go Back Tour”

Runs March 25 through May 27

After a major 2022 stadium tour, Chesney is heading to venues off the beaten path for his 20-concert “I Go Back Tour.” Rather than play only major cities, he and opener Kelsea Ballerini will play smaller markets Chesney typically doesn’t hit on his typical tours. Does that mean he’ll visit your town? We suggest checking below.

Garth Brooks’ “Plus One Las Vegas Residency”

Runs May 18 through Dec. 16

There’s only one place you can catch Garth this year: Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace . Brooks has teased that he and his band — plus, maybe his wife Trish Yearwood, too — will buck tradition and play an unpredictable setlist, including new songs. Although the run of shows sold out almost immediately, you better believe we found tickets.

Carrie Underwood’s “Denim and Rhinestones Tour”

Runs Feb. 2 through March 17

In 2022, Underwood dropped her “Denim and Rhinestones” album, hit 18 venues on her tour’s first leg, and performed at the AMAs in an aerial cage. Next year, she won’t slow down. She and opening act Jimmie Allen have 25 concerts left on their tour . If you want to see if she’s coming to you, click below.

Blake Shelton’s “Back To The Honky Tonk Tour”

Runs Feb. 16 through March 25

Gwen Stefani’s hubby is doing his own thing on tour in early spring. His 18-concert “Back To The Honky Tonk Tour” featuring opening acts Carly Pearce and Jackson Dean will be his first since 2021’s “Friends and Heroes” run of shows. No guarantees, but we’d bet good money he’ll play tracks from his most recent album, “Body Language.”

Kane Brown’s “Drunk or Dreaming Tour”

Runs March 16 through Aug. 3

Following his massively successful “Blessed And Free” 2021-22 tour, Brown is already back on the road for more. He’ll perform 34 concerts all over North America during the spring and summer this time. Opening acts Dustin Lynch and LOCASH are coming along with him for the ride this time too.

Luke Combs’ “World Tour”

Runs March 25 through July 29

Big things are in store for Combs in 2023. His four-month mega tour will take him to stadiums all over North America with a variety of special guests like Riley Green and Lainey Wilson. Expect to hear his melancholy, new single “Going, Going, Gone” at shows too. He just took to Instagram to call the track one of his “personal favorites.”

Shania Twain’s “Queen of Me Tour”

Runs April 28 through July 24

Twain promises each of her 44 upcoming shows will be big parties with no “inhibitions, no conditions.” If hearing classic tracks “Man! I Feel Like A Woman,” “You’re Still The One,” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” live sounds like your jam, you’re in the right place. BRELAND, Hailey Whitters and others will serve as her opening act on select dates.

Thomas Rhett’s “Home Team Tour”

Runs Feb. 9 through Sept. 29

We don’t know when Thomas Rhett finds time to sleep. After headlining the massive 2022 “Bring the Bar To You” tour, he’s already returning to the grind for 50 concerts next year. This time around, he’s bringing opening acts Cole Swindell and Nate Smith along with the, ahem, bar to you and your, ahem, home team.

The Judds’ “Final Tour”

Runs Jan. 26 through Feb. 25

Following the untimely passing of Naomi, Wynonna kept The Judds going and trotted out the hits for fans at live shows in 2022. Next year, she’ll do it all over again after having extended her run of shows. Martina McBryde, Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, and Martina McBride are just some of the big names joining her this time around.

Lady A’s “Request Line Tour”

Runs April 14 through Oct. 28

The Request Line tour is unlike any other we have listed here. At each show, the trio is taking requests and has promised on Instagram that “no two shows will be the same on the (tour).” We have our fingers crossed that they play their jumpy, new single “Summer State of Mind,” but no promises — the fans will get to pick what’s played.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure, and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

2023 country festivals

If that’s not enough country for you, we understand.

That’s why we found the biggest country festivals with household-name stars coming to fairgrounds and event spaces all over North America this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss.

2023 Country Tours and Residencies - Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Luke Combs and more

country artists on tour 2023

Country music stars celebrated the New Year at home over the weekend, while many of them enjoyed a few last days with their families before they hit the road in 2023.

Artists including Lainey Wilson, Scotty McCreery and Blake Shelton will launch new tours in the first six weeks of 2023, with Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire set to resume their journeys on the road. Dozens of their country music counterparts will follow in their footsteps over the next six months.

Underwood, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Garth Brooks are set for Las Vegas residencies in 2023. When Brooks' residency at Caesar's Palace was announced, he sold out the entire year of concerts in the first day. He immediately added more shows to the schedule.

"My whole life I have heard the saying, 'Rome wasn't built in a day,'" Brooks said on Instagram. "Well, thanks to God and the people, ours was. Truly grateful and unapologetically excited.”

CMT compiled a list of 2023 Tours and Las Vegas residencies already announced, and more are expected to come in.

Top Country Concert Tours of 2023 – Part 1

The holidays are done, the decorations stored away, and winter is in full force for most of us, so what else is there to do but dream of warmer days and start mapping out our 2023 concert calendar with Country Music On Tour?

Top Country Concert Tour Tickets of 2023 - Part 1 from Country Music on Tour

We saw a lot of movers and shakers make big tour announcements towards the end of the year, so in no particular order, we’re going to list who we predict will have the hottest concert tickets of 2023.

Brandi Carlisle – While all artists have peaks and valleys in their careers, very few have the kind of foundation-building steady rise that guarantees they will reach legendary status within their lifetime. We are seeing that right now with independent artist Brandi Carlisle, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a corner of country music her talent hasn’t touched these days, most especially the live music sector.

Zach Bryan – This Oklahoma son has made it his mission to take on Ticketmaster and give his fans affordable shows all year long and we love him all the more for it! With an assortment of individual dates and festival appearances, this red dirt romeo is certainly making the rounds

Eric Church – Mr Misunderstood himself, Eric Church, never fails to put on a fiery show full of his custom blend of country and rock, and 2023 will be no different. The man is a touring MACHINE!

George Strait – In a rare announcement last fall, George Strait made it known that he’ll be hitting the road for a very few VERY special dates with Chris Stapleton. His touring days are limited since he likes to stay closer to his home of Texas, so these tickets will move FAST.

Kelsea Ballerini – This heartfirst artist is going through a lot these days… a lot of cities that is! Kelsea Ballerini is hot on the heels of her latest album release “Subject To Change” and she’s spending the better part of 2023 connecting with fans on stage and out in the crowd.

Shania Twain – Currently the top-selling artist on Ticketmaster, Shania’s Queen of Me tour has been a LONG time coming and fans are ready to welcome her back to the big stage! We all know there’s a big difference between the carefully scripted and controlled environment of a Vegas residency and the chaotic charisma of a stadium tour, and we want to share that with the original crossover queen.

Lainey Wilson – This Bell-Bottomed country gal is taking the nation by storm as her authentic twang and fiery sass light up the concert tour circuit in 2023. Lainey Wilson is fast-tracking her way to legendary status and it’s a well-earned ride!

Cody Johnson – There’s one fanbase you don’t want to fight with and that’s the CoJo crowd, so be sure to get your tickets to Cody Johnson’s tour as soon as you can, cause you won’t find many of them in the resale market. The bots leave him alone and the fans scoop him up for keeps!

Blake Shelton – It’s nice of Blake to find time in his busy television schedule to come out on the road and party with his fans. Between The Voice and his new bar show, catching an actual musical performance from the man is rare, so let’s enjoy it while we can!

March 17 – Aug. 5, 2023: Chris Stapleton

But what followed over the next five years has been nothing short of extraordinary. With every release, he has earned himself more critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming one of the most successful performers of his generation. Let’s take a look at how Chris Stapleton became one of the greatest country artists of all time.

Chris Stapleton first made waves as a songwriter with hits like “Never Wanted Nothing More” (Kenny Chesney), “Come Back Song” (Darius Rucker) and “Drink You Away” (Justin Timberlake). It wasn’t long before he started making a name for himself as an artist in his own right. His solo career kicked off with Traveller, which featured songs such as “Tennessee Whiskey,” and reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and its version of “Tennessee Whiskey” was even certified Diamond by the RIAA!

Chris Stapleton is without a doubt one of the most successful country performers in recent memory, but it looks like he isn’t done yet! Fans are eagerly awaiting what comes next from this talented singer-songwriter, who seems to be getting better with each passing year. With such an impressive track record behind him already, there is no telling what heights he will reach next!  Get your country tickets now!

Feb. 9 – July 20, 2023: Jason Aldean

Superstar Jason Aldean is one of the most successful and beloved artists in the genre. With ten albums and forty singles, he has achieved both commercial and critical success. His music is relatable and honest, his shows are always energetic and enjoyable, and he has raised millions of dollars for charity.

Jason has released some of the most iconic country songs of recent years, including “Dirt Road Anthem,” “She’s Country,” “Big Green Tractor,” and “Burnin’ It Down.” His lyrics are heartfelt, honest, and often humorous. His sound incorporates elements from other genres like rock and rap, creating a unique blend that appeals to listeners from all walks of life. He also has a gift for storytelling, which can be heard in hits like “1994”—a nostalgic ode to Joe Diffie—and “Tattoos On This Town.”

Jason’s live performances are renowned for their energy and excitement. He puts on an amazing show full of high-energy tracks as well as slower ballads that showcase his incredible vocal range. His stage presence is electrifying; whether he’s playing an acoustic version of “Fly Over States” or rocking out to “Dirt Road Anthem,” it’s clear that Jason loves performing live. It’s no wonder that he consistently sells out venues around the world!

Whether you’re a longtime follower or new to Jason Aldean altogether, there’s no denying that he is one of the biggest stars in the genre today—and for good reason! He produces great music with meaningful lyrics; puts on fantastic live performances; and uses his platform to help those in need through charitable works. That’s why we’ll continue celebrating this phenomenal talent for many years to come!

Don’t miss him live at one of his upcoming country concerts in 2023!

10 Country Acts Poised for a Breakout Year in 2023

2023 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for country music, with albums from country legend Shania Twain and chart-topping all-stars Luke Combs and Dierks Bentley on the way. But alongside those household names are rising stars poised to continue to make their mark on Music City. From 2023 CMT Next Women of Country class members to a sibling duo from Kentucky, here are 10 rising acts every country fan should keep an eye on this year.

Carter Faith

Carter Faith

Mason Goodson

North Carolina native Carter Faith follows up a busy 2022, which included her Grand Ole Opry debut, signing a music publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group Nashville and the release of her stellar breakup song "Already Crazy," with yet another accolade: she's among CMT's 2023 Next Women of Country Class, which boasts Kacey Musgraces, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Mickey Guyton and many more among its alumni.

Faith has amassed over 30 million streams with the breezy love song "Joyride" and the cowboy-rides-away anthem "Greener Pasture" and has plans for a yet-to-be-announced 2023 full-length debut album.

"I'm always thinking of what I'm gonna do tomorrow or what I'm gonna do five years from now," Faith told Wide Open Country last year. "I think that comes with being a creative and being a dreamer, but I'm really trying to stay in the moment that I'm in."

— Bobbie Jean Sawyer

Julie Williams

Julie Williams

Florida-raised Julie Williams follows in the tradition of country artists sharing deeply personal stories steeped in universal truths on  "Southern Curls," in which she reflects on growing up as a mixed-race child in the south.

"Not all southern girls are met with open doors/ Some of us are looked down on before we're even born...I'm a southern girl with her own kind of southern curls," Williams sings.

"I'm writing my songs for the 10-year old girl who cries in the shower as she tries to detangle her hair and is afraid to look in the mirror because she hates what she sees; for the 20-year-old who is just now learning to love herself; for the new mom that wants her daughters and sons to love themselves as themselves and to hear music that celebrates them," Williams says . "That's who my songs are for."

Williams, a member of CMT's 2023 Next Women of Country class, will release her new single "Wrong Mr. Right" on Feb. 10. — BS

Pillbox Patti

Pillbox Patti

Alexa Kinigopoulos

Pillbox Patti (the alter ego of songwriter Nicolette Hayford) has been penning Nashville cuts (Ashley McBryde's "One Night Standards," Lainey Wilson's This One's Gonna Cost Me") for over a decade, but she made her artist debut last year with her unflinchingly bold and and vivid album Florida, an 8-song collection of tales of her upbringing in The Sunshine State. Pillbox Patti is also featured on Ashley McBryde's Grammy-nominated 2022 album Lindeville. — BS

Brittney Spencer

Brittney Spencer

Nicki Fletcher

Back in 2020, Brittney Spencer shared a cover of The Highwomen's "Crowded Table" that drew the attention of Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and many more. A little over a year later, Spencer was sharing the stage with the country supergroup and performing on the CMA Awards. Following a whirlwind couple of years, which included performing with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit and opening for Willie Nelson, Maren Morris, Megan Thee Stallion and Brandi Carlile, Spencer won't be slowing down in 2023. The Baltimore native, who released her debut EP with Elektra, if i ever get there: a day at blackbird studio, in November, is set to release her debut full-length album this year. - - BS

O.N.E the Duo

country artists on tour 2023

For O.N.E the duo, Tekitha and Prana Supreme, music has always been the family business. (Prana Supreme is the daughter of RZA, the founder of Wu-Tang Clan and Tekitha was a featured vocalist of Wu-Tang Clan and performed on the hit album Wu-Tang Forever. ) Citing Chris Stapleton, Fleetwood Mac and The Judds among their influences, the mother-daughter duo blends hip-hop and country for a rootsy sound steeped in blood harmonies.

"Growing up, my mom used to host these big jam session parties at our house," Prana Supreme said in a press release. "It was probably one of the highlights of my childhood, getting to hang out with all these singers, musicians, rappers, poets, etc. Usually, at these jams, Mom and I would freestyle a song together — and it was the morning after one of these jam parties that the idea of us singing and writing our own songs together came to my mind."

Ben Burgess

Press shot from 2022 of Ben Burgess

Chris Hornbuckle

Ben Burgess has co-written songs cut by an eclectic range of acts, from Tyler Rich ("The Difference") and Pat Green ("Drinkin' Days") to the Jonas Brothers ("Chillin' in the Summertime") and Lil' Wayne ("Dreams"). Since signing with Big Loud Records in 2020, he's followed the same path as Mel Tillis, Willie Nelson, Chris Stapleton and the dozens of country artists to transition from songwriter for the stars to star in their own right.

"I'd given up on the dream of being an artist," Burgess told Holler about his slow climb to solo prominence. "I always wanted to do it and felt like I could, but the pieces never aligned. I never had the right song with the right team. So I was like, 'Screw it! I'm just going to put out great songs '.  And I became addicted to it."

Debut album Tears the Size of Texas arrived on Sept. 30, 2022 and upped the exposure of its breakthrough title track. As of early January, the song's numbers on Spotify sit just south of a million— a staggering statistic for a relative newcomer. Additional streaming hits "Sick and Tired" and "Heartbreak" cast Burgess as someone capable of following Luke Combs and Jon Pardi's bootsteps through a healthy blend of traditional country storytelling chops and stadium show ambition. — Bobby Moore

Press shot of Mya Byrne from 2022.

Lauren Tabak

Mya Byrne's spot in the Americana and alt-country space got a signal boost in 2022 when she signed to Kill Rock Stars (KRS) Nashville— a new extension of the DIY label that brought us the late indie-folk icon Elliott Smith as well as Unwound (not a George Strait cover band, for better or worse), Bratmobile, Bikini Kill and other acts that challenged socio-political norms.

"I believe in [label co-founder] Slim Moon and all the work KRS has historically done to support the cutting edge of music," Byrne shared in a press release. "To have been asked to be the very first artist to release on Kill Rock Stars Nashville both is an honor and demonstrates their commitment to trans women and other marginalized artists being firmly centered in Nashville, in the Americana and country community."

As for what to expect in the new year, Byrne's Rhinestone Tomboy (out April 28) will mark the first physical release by KRS Nashville. The Aaron Lee Tasjan produced album includes a promise for brighter days in "Autumn Sun" and another sip from a glass half-full titled "It Don't Fade." — BM

Ashley Cooke

Press shot of Ashley Cooke from 2022

Brayln Kelly

Few rising acts made larger professional strides in 2022 than Ashley Cooke.

"This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. I inked my first deals, played bucket list stages, went on four major tours and a country-wide radio tour, met thousands of new people and even a few of my heroes, fell in and out of love and spent more nights sleeping on a van bench than in my bed," shared Cooke in a press release for her appropriately-titled song "It's Been a Year." "It held some good, some bad and some of the greatest moments of my life so far— and I wouldn't trade a single minute of the last 365 days. Thank you all for being on this journey with me and cheers to many more."

A country radio breakthrough in Brett Young duet "Never Til Now," a national TV appearance on The Bachelorette and a Grand Ole Opry debut top Cooke's list of 2022 milestones.

This roundup considers the future, though, and Cooke's is bright. She begins 2023 with her first overseas dates as part of the UK's Country 2 Country (C2C) festival and will join Young for 16 tour stops across the US. And hopefully, the recent influx of new songs, such as the stellar "Running Back," pays off by December with an album. — BM

Press shot from 2022 of Nate Smith

Matthew Berinato

Nate Smith's first stint in Nashville ended with him heading back to California for a 13-year career as a nurse assistant.

After the 2018 Camp Fire decimated the singer-songwriter's hometown of Paradise, Cal. and destroyed all of his belongings, he coped by writing "Wildfire." The song landed Smith a publishing deal and spawned several TikTok hits, namely "Whiskey on You" and "I Don't Wanna Go to Heaven." His path from feeling overlooked in country music to being as in demand as any up-and-comer will culminate on Feb. 17 with a self-titled debut album.

"Now, I have a clear vision about why I do music," Smith told Songwriter Universe about his triumphant return to Music City. "Now my whole thing is that I want to help people. I want to make music that can touch hearts and make a difference in people's lives. Still overall, my first experience in Nashville was good, because it gave me the foundation of co-writing and networking. So I think it was a good introduction to Nashville." — BM

Kentucky Gentlemen

Press shot from 2022 of Kentucky Gentlemen

As The Kentucky Gentlemen, twins Brandon and Derek Campbell have the potential join the rich lineage of sibling acts that've reimagined the vocal stylings of roots music— a timeline that spans from the Stanley Brothers to the McCrary Sisters.

Though they've nailed revved-up twang ("Lose My Boots") and country- R&B crossover ("Whatever You're Up For") approaches, the Campbell siblings stand out the most when they're smooth-voiced cowboy Casanovas. For examples of the latter, check out the sunshiny "Vibin'" or the equally swoon-worthy "Love Language."

Like other artists on Black Opry bills, The Kentucky Gentlemen bring much-needed diversity —as both Black and gay artists— to country and Americana spaces.

"We understand the importance of where we're going and what that means to people like us," Derek shared for the band's bio . "We want to be the same folks that we wish we had always gotten to see on the main stage." — BM

10 New and Upcoming Country and Americana Artists You Need to Know October 2023

When we fall in love here at Holler we fall hard and fast.

Whether it's a new Appalachian six-piece from Kentucky or a country-pop duo from the heart of Music City, when we go in, we go all in.

So, get ready for another of Holler's monthly round ups of our latest loves; a who's who of the most exciting prospects to begin leaving their mark on the country and Americana landscape.

For October 2023, we've got a Brooklyn harpist whose third album pushes the boundaries of what country-folk is considered to be, a rag tag slacker country outfit from Philly who sound like a cross between Gram Parsons and Girls, and a Grammy winning noughties pop star who’s crossed over into country with startling results.

Here's Holler's 10 New and Upcoming Country and Americana Artists You Need to Know for October 2023.

“Don’t pull your punches when you meet God in the desert after dark,” Lizzie No says, as she introduces us to the character at the centre of her third album. “If your life has turned into a car wreck, honk the horn until you get free. Miss Freedomland wrestled self-hatred, and violent men, and alcohol for 15 years but never gave up hope of being blessed. Nobody scares her anymore.”

Three albums in and Lizzie No continues to defy categorisation. Worshipped in the broad church of Americana, like the artists to whom she’s most often compared - Allison Russell, Rhiannon Giddens and Adia Victoria – Lizzie No’s work pulls from the rhythms and traditions of blues, folk and country, but collaborations with Pom Pom Squad, Domino Kirkie Kill Rock Stars’ Brian Dunne bring out the Brooklyn singer songwriter’s influences from more unusual quarters.

The harpist and guitarist’s third album, Halfsies , follows the turbulent journey of its central character, Miss Freedomland (a character that represents both No herself and her audience) as she searches for freedom from the depths of despair and an escape from the frightening realities of life in modern America.

“Some albums are stories, some are films. This album is a video game,” explains No. “If you’re in these songs with me, what seems at first like a journey of self-analysis becomes a journey to get free, and get your people free, as well.”

Along with contributions from Brian Dunne on ‘Lagunita,’ the album also features guest vocals from Allison Russell and strings from Grammy Award-winning group Attaca Quartet.

Lizzie No began turning heads and winning over hearts with the release of her debut album, Hard Won , back in 2017, when she immediately established herself as one of the most exciting new voices in contemporary American folk music.

Drawing comparisons with Linda Thompson, Karen Dalton and Sandy Denny, her country-tinged folk found its influences in traditional roots music from both sides of the Atlantic. The album’s standouts ‘Outlaws’ won the American Songwriter Magazine Lyrics Prize as it poked fun at the outlaw myth, while ‘Killing Season' was an incendiary response to police brutality and the events that led to the Black Lives Matter movement made all the more powerful by the singer’s unfaltering delivery.

The album’s follow up, Vanity , continued her unsparing self-reflection lyrically as she pushed her folk sound into alt-pop territory, while a pair of singles on the Colemine Records label, ‘Sweeter Than Strychnine’ and ‘Stop Bothering Me’ introduced her straight up soulful side.

Halfsies is an exploration of the relationship between individuality and belonging that crosses over with Lizzie No’s side hustle as co-host of the Basic Folk podcast, where she has interviewed everyone from Ben Harper to Valerie June to Kishi Bashi.

The erasure of Black artists is central to the myth of country music - what it means, what it stands for, where it comes from - and so simply by standing on stage and singing as a Queer, Black woman, whether it be in theatres across the country with the Black Opry, or leading Queer Line Dancing nights with the Lavender Country tour, Lizzie No is a protest singer and her songs are protest songs.

Their songs are descendants of white protest folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez that draw equally from the soulful spiritual folk stylings of Odetta, the upside-down guitar picking of Elizabeth Cotton and the magnetic calm of Joan Armatrading.

Loaded up with dismay and outrage, her powerful, unwavering voice mixes a bleak recognition of the way things are with a quiet hope for what they could be.

“To be Black in America is to be a stranger in a strange land, a character dropped into a video game in the middle of the fight, pressed with the task of finding your allies and sharpening your tools,” they say. “Many of us are so afraid to be free that we choose to get comfortable with bondage. But Nina cried power and Toni told the ghost stories so that Miss Freedomland would have a map to somewhere new.”

Lizzie No has that same map firmly in her grasp and she’s leading the way.

Halfsies by Lizzie No is released on January 19th 2023. The single ‘Lagunita’ is out now.

The music of Florry sits at a crossroads where Gram Parsons and Exile on Main Street- era Rolling Stones meets the melodic slacker pop of early Mac DeMarco and the fuzzy ramshackle charm of a K Records indie pop band.

Rag tag Philly outfit Florry are the full-band moniker of singer and songwriter Francie Medosch, whose homespun coming-of-age tales of feeling lost and small in America are driven by her raucous band, loaded up with jangling 12-string guitar, fiddle, mandolin, squawky harmonicas and lashings of pedal steel.

“I got no lovers,” she sings on Florry’s Dear Life Records debut The Holey Bible. “I'm just a real friendly gal face down in a ditch, pickin’ myself up somehow.”

Honing her longtime love of country music, the album is a mix of deliciously messy power-pop and acoustic campfire laments that sounds like the party their live shows promise to be.

There’s almost a little bit of Elvis Costello in Medosch’s quavering androgynous whine, and with its scuzzy garage guitars and hook loaded anti-country tales of heartbreak and longing, Florry have succeeded in making the record we always hoped Christopher Owens would make when he "went country" after Girls, but never ended up making.

Colbie Caillat

Not so much an artist you need to know, but more an artist you already knew but need to get to know again.

With millions of albums and singles sold, over 15 billion streams, two Grammys won, and a number one duet with Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat’s solo country debut, Along The Way , arrives a decade and a half after the singer songwriter’s first album, the triple platinum Coco , which included the summer pop smash ‘Bubbly.’

Listening back, you can catch glimpses of her country side on Coco and its follow ups Breakthrough and All Of You that Colbie Caillat now fully leans into. The light finger picking, the warm voice, the bright melodies and beachy feel of those early songs would have always been categorised as country classics in another artist’s hands.

Raised in California, she’s now been living and working in Nashville for over six years, where she discovered a fresh songwriter inside her who is ready to share her new perspectives. Inspired by heartbreak, and writing with frequent collaborators AJ Pruis and Liz Rose on Along The Way , Caillat wholeheartedly embraces her inner twang while never losing her sunny, glass-half-full outlook and bright eyed pop sensibilities.

Dylan Gossett

“The storytelling and visualization of a song are important to me,” Dylan Gossett explains about his storytelling. “I’m essentially playing a movie in my head and creating a story for the listener.”

These imaginary movies playing out in his head have begun capturing audiences too. Born is Austin, Texas, Dylan Gossett first picked up a guitar in middle school after discovering Ed Sheeran, but after his first two guitar lessons “didn’t work out,” he taught himself by watching YouTube clips and thanks to some tips from his older brother.

In between listening to classics from Alan Jackson, George Strait, Journey, The Eagles, Scorpions and Boston with his family, he immersed himself in records by country outliers like Turnpike Troubadours and Cody Johnson, and it was a rendition of The Lumineers’ ‘Ophelia’ and Flatland Cavalry’s ‘A Life Where We Work Out’ that set the tone for the kind of country songs he wanted to write.

“I have Texas country roots, and I also love red dirt Americana,” he notes. “My sound is indebted to both. 50 percent of my passion is singing, and the other 50 percent is writing. That’s where a lot of the enjoyment of making music comes from.”

It was no surprise when his debut single ‘To Be Free’ exploded on TikTok, amassing over 3 million Spotify streams, but it was his song ‘Coal’ which catalysed his breakthrough when it notched up over 23 million Spotify streams.

His latest offering is ‘Beneath Oak Trees,’ a song inspired by seeing a massive oak tree on his wedding day, taken from Gossett’s forthcoming debut EP, No Better Time , out now.

Austin Snell

“My ma raised me on Waylon, my pops on rock and roll,” sings Austin Snell on the title track to his latest EP, ‘Muddy Water Rockstar,’ as he shows you exactly what happens when you mix those influences up.

With a country rock sound that owes as much to Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park as it does Willie and Waylon, Austin Snell has timed his rise to perfection. With the success of artists like HARDY, Whiskey Myers and Pecos & The Rooftops, country music is undeniably having a moment with heavy rock right now , as award winning country artists are topping the country charts with records that sound louder and nastier than ever.

In the same way that recent records by Ruston Kelly, Morgan Wade and Stephen Wilson Jr. all draw as much from alternative rock as they do from their more obvious Americana influences, Austin Snell’s country rock is infused with the spirit of 90s grunge, mixing ground-out rock aggression with introspective thoughtful lyrics.

Ever since his debut single ‘Excuse the Mess’ came out in January 2023 and immediately racked up a million streams in its first week of release, the country world has been playing catch up, and a quarter of a million TikTok followers and over 50 million total streams later, Austin Snell is now poised to explode with his debut EP on Warner Music Nashville.

Jade Eagleson

It’s already been an unforgettable year for the Canadian country singer Jade Eagleson. The singer from Ontario kicked off 2023 with his second JUNO nomination for Country Album of the Year and was recently named the 2023 CCMA Awards Entertainer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year. This all follows his monumental win for Top Selling Canadian Album with his sophomore release Honkytonk Revival a t the 2022 CCMA Awards.

The 29-year-old’s third studio album, Do It Anyway , picks up where his last two left off, with 13 prime country cuts of polished neo-traditionalist country topped with Eagleson’s smooth and creamy baritone.

If you want a little taster sip of Jade Eagleson then we’d suggest lining up a shot of the fiery ‘Shakin’ In Them Boots’ followed by a long slurp of recent single, ‘Telluride’, and washing it all down with breakneck two-stepper ‘Rodeo Queen.’ That’s all it usually takes to develop a liking for the stuff.

Zach Meadows

You’d trust Gabe Lee with anything, obviously, but you’d definitely count on him when it comes to songwriters.

It was in Asheville that Gabe Lee came across Zach Meadows while he was out on tour with Molly Tuttle, and he became a makeshift mentor to the fledgling songwriter. Two years later the pair walked into Farmland - the same studio where Lee had recorded three of his four albums - and with the help of Alex Torrez and David Dorn, both long time Gabe Lee producers, they laid down four songs that captured that effortless country-folk sound that had first drawn Lee to Meadows.

Born and raised in Florida, Zach Meadows ended up in Asheville in North Carolina where the steady flow of its rivers and the Blue Ridge Mountains seemed to infuse his songwriting with an easy Appalachian calm.

The only two singles so far – ‘Texas Two Step’ and ‘Cardinal Song’ – are so laid back they’re almost horizontal. In a world of chaos, there’s something refreshingly uncomplicated and reassuring about Zach Meadows’ simple truths and distinctly small-town Southern charms.

‘Cardinal Song’ is out now through Torrez Music Group

Listen If You Like: Brent Cobb, John R. Miller, Hayes Carll

Tish Melton

Gabe Lee isn’t the only one who can be trusted for a solid endorsement. As soon as we read that Brandi Carlile was producing and mentoring Tish Melton we were all in.

The daughter of American author and queer activist Glennon Doyle, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter released her debut single ‘Michelle’ last month as an introduction to her introspective diaristic indie folk, documenting the ups and downs of teenage friendships and the break ups and make ups of the middle age of your late teens.

With its casually cool take on growing up and growing apart from people, her writing brings to mind the light, candid lyricism of Phoebe Bridgers and the coming-of-age sad girl confessional pop of Gracie Abrams and Girl In Red.

Her songs work in the same way that films like Edge Of Seventeen and Ghost World were able to perfectly capture the overwhelming feelings of anxiety, sadness and heartbreak that overwhelm teenage life in the pre-apocalypse.

Listen If You Like: Taylor Swift,Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers

Boy Named Banjo

Crafting a sound that blends country, bluegrass, alt-rock and lively folk-pop, Boy Named Banjo’s new album, Dusk , feels like their finest distillation of all their disparate influences yet.

“Our band has so many different sides and personalities to it,” says Boy Named Banjo’s Barton Davies. “One minute we might be singing bluegrass harmonies around a condenser mic, and the next we’ve got these big, distorted guitars and pounding, rock and roll drums. This album feels like the first time we’ve been able to capture it all at once, the first time we’ve been able to bottle that live energy and share it on a record.”

The Nashville-raised country outliers Boy Named Banjo have been together in some shape or form since its members were in high school. It’s been a long journey from their stripped back self-released 2012 debut, The Tanglewood Sessions , and even its more fleshed out follow up, Long Story Short , only hinted at the breadth of styles they take on across the new album.

“We wanted to make a big statement with our first full-length release on Mercury,” says guitarist William Reames, explaining how the band worked out of a series of makeshift studios with longtime collaborator Oscar Charles, laying down what would become Dusk in secret , experimenting with new sounds and recording techniques as they chased the freewheeling excitement and undeniable emotional impact of their live shows.

“Our influences have always been really broad and our sound has always been really wide-ranging, and we didn’t want to shy away from that,” says Reames. “At the end of the day, this is who we are.”

As Joey says in friends as he gleefully tucks into the dessert Rachel makes after mistakenly mixing up the recipes for Shepherd’s Pie and Trifle, “What’s not to like? Custard? Good! Jam? Good! Meat? Good!”

Dusk is out now on Mercury Nashville

Listen If You Like: Flatland Cavalry, Turnpike Troubadours, The Eagles

Harper O'Neill

“Maybe it's the wrong glass ceiling to break,” says Harper O’Neill about her debut long player, Dark Bar Daisy . “But I'm telling stories about the whole human experience of being a woman.”

She doesn’t stop at the ceiling. The Dallas-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter is the kind of powerhouse country singer who can pick up any room and tear the roof off with it.

Produced by Jake Gear, Dark Bar Daisy , is a gigantic country soul record filled with lush, dynamic string arrangements and blasting Muscle Shoals horns that brings to mind recent outings from Lee Ann Womack and Connie Smith. While the demos for the records veered more closely to traditional acoustic instrumentation, arranger Jordan Lehning helped O’Neill fully realize the colourful, orchestral sonic vision she had for Dark Bar Daisy .

“I was really excited to paint with all the brushes in the studio musically,” O’Neill says. “We gave him tons of references, like Khraungbin, Silk Sonic, Lake Street Dive and some old soul references. That was the melting pot mix of sounds that I was that I was chasing.”

It serves as a bold statement of intent from one of country music’s most fearless new voices.
