Caramoan Travel Guide: Tourism Gem of Camarines Sur

Caramoan

About Caramoan

Caramoan is a paradise in the farthest coast of Camarines Sur, hidden in underdeveloped and rural soil where white sand beaches, limestone cliffs, beautiful and islets are common scenery.

A peninsular town, Caramoan is a group of islands and islets scattered in the Pacific Ocean, endowed with nature’s beauty and preserved by its seclusion.

Caramoan

The place is made famous by the hit global reality show franchise “Survivor” and became a favorite shooting location due to numerous islands with fine white sand, lagoons, caves, limestone cliffs and rocks, and rich marine life that give a new definition to an island experience. But even before the “Survivor” series, there was already Caramoan – beautifully unspoiled and unexploited.

With its natural beauty and rich history, Caramoan stands proud as a real tourism gem of Bicolandia that holds a promise of a perfect tropical island adventure!

Looking for white and pink sand beaches in Southern Luzon?  Plan a trip to Caramoan, Camarines Sur .  Dubbed as the Emerging Paradise of the Pacific , the place is not as accessible as other tourist spots in the region hence it remains unspoilt and free from commercial tourism.  Getting there requires hours of travelling by airplane, car, and boat but this beauty is worth all the hours on the road.

Aside from beaches, Caramoan is blessed with lakes, caves, coves, lagoons, and limestone forest that is home to a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna.

Caramoan Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Caramoan summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Caramoan in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Caramoan.

1 | Enjoy Gota Beach

Caramoan’s main attraction, Gota Beach is known for its white sand beaches surrounded by mountains and limestone rock formations.  It’s a popular jump-off point for island hopping and a great spot for activities like diving and snorkeling in addition to swimming.

2 | Island hopping around the Caramoan Peninsula

The Caramoan Peninsula comprises several islands blessed with white sand beaches and crystal clear water teeming with rich marine life.  Some of these islands are home to a few local fishing families while some are deserted which make them a perfect haven to unwind and relax.  Sabitang Laya is a favorite shooting location of reality show Survivor while Cagbanilad Island is a perfect choice if you are looking for privacy and solitude.  Other islands to explore are Manlawi Island, Cotivas Island, Lahos Island, Tinago Island, and of course Matukad Island, deemed as the most mysterious island in Caramoan.

3 | Explore Matukad Island

The island is dubbed mysterious due to the hidden lagoon located at the top of jagged limestone rock formations, making the island a favorite among rock climbing enthusiasts.  And if that is not interesting enough, you might get a chance to see the biggest milkfish you will ever see.

4 | See all the caves

There are at least four caves to see in Caramoan.  Omang Cave, a part of Caramoan National Park, has beautiful limestone and stalactite formations.  Kulapnit Cave, home to thousands of bats, has amazing stalagmites, stalactite pillars, and challenging channels.  If you can’t get enough of challenges, see Bulang-bugang Cave, an underwater cave with an opening at the bottom of the huge rock formation.  The opening is too small that it can only fit one person to pass through.  The rocks are sharp and slippery, definitely a challenge especially to those with less experience.  Manipis Cave on the other hand is said to be the hiding place of the Yamashita Treasure.

5 | Take a refreshing dip at Layahan and Hugsad Falls

Layahan and Hugsad Falls are unexploited and only a few locals and fewer tourists have explored them.  Getting there can be challenging but you will be rewarded with the scenic views and refreshing water.

6 | Do extreme sports

If island hopping, swimming, and caving aren’t enough, know that you can do more in Caramoan.  You can try kayaking, river tubing, rappelling, and cliff diving.  Langkipao Cliff is perfect for beginners as it measures 17 to 23 feet only.  For those with more experience, the best choice is Caliog Cliff. It stands high and mighty with a height of 40 to 50 feet.

7 | Side trip destinations

Caramoan is less than an hour away from Codon Port, Catanduanes .  While it experiences typhoons throughout the year that earned its nickname as the Typhoon Capital of the Philippines, Catanduanes is gaining the tourism spotlight with its beaches, caves, stone chapels, and centuries-old churches.

NOTE: The Isla Carahan Festival occurs annually every May 2-8.

Klook

EAT & DRINK

The following is your guide to the flavorful food to enjoy and restaurants to try while in Caramoan.

1 | Bay Sand Restaurant

Located right on the beach, Bay Sand Restaurant offers excellent Filipino and seafood dishes.  It’s open from morning to late at night to provide customers with good food throughout the day.

2 | Caramo-tan Grill and RestoBar

Caramo-tan Grill is a great place to enjoy the scenic views of the island over good food and ice cold drinks.  Don’t miss their grilled spicy squid.

3 | Caramoan Bed and Dine

While it’s a popular accommodation among tourists, Caramoan Bed and Dine also boasts of its tiki-hut styled diner with bamboo interiors.  It is located near the historical St. Michael the Archangel church and is open to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Don’t miss their Bicol express and chopsuey.

4 | Island View Lodge and Restobar

Located along Paniman Beach, is a food haven known to serve fresh seafood dishes.  It’s great for pet-lovers, too as the restaurant has friendly dogs welcoming the customers.

5 | Wowoys Seafood Restaurant

To experience boodle fight dining, head over to Wowoys Seaffod Restaurant where the freshest seafood is served on a daily basis.  Their must-try includes Bicol Pancit Bato, Chakoy, Tabog-tabog, Lambong Butong, and Ginataang Santol.  You may need to pre-order to ensure the availability of the dishes upon arrival.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skysca n ner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

Typical Costs in Caramoan in 2023 :

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Caramoan.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Caramoan, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying fit & healthy can be challenging when traveling in the Philippines.

The following are our Top 10 Tips for Staying Healthy while Traveling in the Philippines:

  • Maintain a Balanced Diet

  • Get Plenty of Rest

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Caramoan or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE | TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Here’s your Caramoan Island Travel Guide.

Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur: An All-in-One Countryside Adventure

Coming from the city, the rural areas would remind us of the simplicity of life where nature makes for a centerpiece. For a region so remote as the Caramoan in the province of Camarines Sur, this notion is true with it being so rustic and relaxed as enjoyed by the people who understand that life need not have to be complex to be cherished.

But like many underdeveloped areas of the country, Caramoan is a region that is preserved for its natural beauty and is something that will remind us of how amazing Mother Nature truly is as is, without human manipulation.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

Caramoan Island, Location and Geography

Bounded by seawater on three sides, the land that which the municipality of Caramoan belongs to is a peninsula around the northeastern part of the province. At the north and the east lies the Maqueda Channel which separates Caramoan from its neighboring island-province of Catanduanes; at the south is the Gulf of Lagonoy; and at the west, the municipality of Presentacion.

In general, much of Caramoan’s terrain is considered rugged. This easily gives the region an image of mountains and jungles to climb and venture to, respectively. But Caramoan is also an area that has an offshoot of islands by the sea, namely Haponan, Batibagan, Basul, Quinabungan, and Lahuy, to name a few.

CARAMOAN ISLAND, CAMARINES SUR TRAVEL GUIDE

 Brief History

It is not known how the natives called Caramoan before the time of colonization by the Spaniards. However, the earliest recorded name of present-day Caramoan was “gluta de leche” which was given by the Dutch merchants who conducted a gold mine operation in Lahuy and visited the nearby inhabited region for trade. With a name that hints of “milk,” the name was derived from the image of the “milkdrop-like” stalagmites seen around Guta Port.

By the time the Spaniards came, the name was subsequently changed to Caramoan based on the name of the sea turtles called “Carahan” which were abundant in the area at the time. BuT the name “Caramoan” did not have its official use until 1619.

Sabitang Laya

Things to Do In Caramoan Island, Camarines Sur

Caramoan is quite an expansive place with so many offerings. Whether it is on land or water, the place has unique sights to get excited for.

As a land of both flat and uneven terrain as well as being a host to sites that mostly only tourists venture to by foot, Caramoan makes for an interesting prospect to stretch, not just only one’s legs, but also one’s horizon.

However, there is no denying that some of the best sites in Caramoan are to be found by doing some island-hopping. While the islands may be few, these small numbers make for just a perfect amount to explore them all in just the same day.

Perhaps, one major perk of even doing so is the idea of getting a dynamic experience with the activity. As each island is unique in both feature and location, each landmass offers a unique angle that partially describes what makes Caramoan inherently attractive.

Allow me to introduce to you the top tourist destinations which you may wish to visit one day. These may vary depending on your taste as well as the season of your visit. Here is the list.

Bulang-bugang Cave, Caramoan

This underwater cave which can be reached by passing through a small opening at the bottom part of a massive rock formation is a must-see place for those who would like to try a much extreme activity. You have to be careful since it tends to be slippery and the rocks are a little bit sharp.

Cagbalinad Island

The rock formation which also serves as a place for rock climbing is so serene. If you feel that you need some quiet time away from the busy and chaotic environ, head here and do some sightseeing, rock climbing, or just a restful night.

Cotivas Island, Caramoan

The pinkish color of the fine sand found on this island is what makes it unique compared to the other beaches or islands. The palm trees around the area along with the clear water is very inviting and refreshing. I would suggest that you visit the place during low tide for you to fully enjoy your stroll experience.

Kulapnit Cave

Kulapnit is also known as a bat in the local language. With that being said, this cave houses a lot of bat species! The photos you could take here might be a bit eerie, but I can assure you that this is a fun and thrilling activity to try.

Lahos Island, Caramoan

The swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling activities here are what makes the place unique than the other scenic beaches. Might as well head here and experience the beauty of the place plus the thrilling adventure through the activities.

Layahan and Hugsad Falls

The distance of these falls may be a little bit far, but these are also equally amazing. Going her entails trekking, but the view and the freshwater of the falls and the bottom or basin area are very indulging.

Manlawi Island, Caramoan

The sandbar which is possible during low tide, as well as the roaming floating cottage, is the best experience to see and try in Sabitang Laya. On the cottage, you can ride in here and have your lunch while on tour! While the sandbar will give you the chance to enjoy the picturesque scene or take a bath in the blue-green waters.

Matukad Island

A hidden lagoon seems to play a mysterious role in this place. Why? The lagoon is only visible if you reach a particular area. Though the hike to this viewpoint is tough, the view of the biggest milkfish on the lake is satisfying and rewarding. The trees will provide a translucent shade for those who would like to stay overnight for a camping experience.

Omang Cave, Caramoan Island

The stalactite formation found inside this mystique cave is what makes it famous. The cathedral-like view of it which allows the light to enter from the top area illuminates a different array of colors and shines on the rocks. Thus, it is a sight and an experience to behold.

Sabitang Laya, Caramoan

This is a combination of two stretches of an island, and I am sure that you will find this place not only scenic but at the same time, fun and exciting. The 1.2-Kilometers stretch length of the powdery white fine sand allows one to take a quiet and serene walk while the water is merely indulging in its every being.

Tinago Island, Caramoan

The narrow passageway will lead to this island, and from the name itself, it is something that can be considered as “ tinago ” or hidden. The sandy beach paired with the freshwater is perfect for some swimming, picnic, or merely sightseeing activity.

Gone are the days that you have to go very far to experience a fantastic vacation. Just head to Caramoan, and I know that you can already try out these best activities.

Once you arrive on Caramoan Island, be in awe of the tropical scenery and refreshing sea breeze. On the island, here are some of the must-do activities:

Island Hopping

Caramoan is composed of numerous beautiful islands. Discover the charm of these small islands by embarking on an island hopping tour. Divided into different tour types, these itineraries will showcase the very best of what Caramoan has to offer. Some of the popular islands included in these tours are Matukad Island, Busdak Island, Minalahos Island, and Cotivas Island, among others. However, the availability of the islands varies depending on the season.

Island Camping

Take a break from the comforts of urban living and go out on an island camping experience in Caramoan Island. Rough it with nature by watching the moon and the stars and being one with nature instead of booking a hotel on the island. There are secluded beaches in Caramoan where you can camp for the night. It is best to choose one where stores are easily found near the beach for safety and convenience, especially if you need drinking water and other necessities. Be responsible when you camp on the beach in Caramoan. Mind your trash and follow the rules and regulations imposed by the local government for your safety and the preservation of the island’s beauty.

Caramoan Island houses plenty of cave formations, including Omang, Culapnit, Manipis, and Bulang Bulang Caves. To explore these caves, go on a thrilling spelunking excursion. Get a chance to see the impressive stalactite pillars or the fascinating underground stream. Legend even says that Manipis Cave hides the coveted Yamashita Treasure.

Rock Climbing

If you are up for another thrilling adventure at Caramoan Island, go rock climbing on Matukad Island’s jagged rock formations. For safety purposes, follow your guide and hold on to the outcrops. Once you reach the top, you will be greeted by a panoramic view of the lagoon. After rock climbing, take a dip and enjoy the island’s cerulean blue waters and powdery white sand.

Walking Tour of Caramoan

Caramoan is a modest, laidback community with friendly residents. To get a deeper appreciation of the island, explore the town on foot or rent a motorbike. At the town center, purchase fresh produce or souvenirs to bring home. You may also check out the local eats in town. After lunch, you may visit the local mangrove areas and swamps.

Caramoan Island will sweep you off your feet with its unparalleled natural beauty! It’s no wonder those who visited Caramoan once often find themselves coming back to the island for more. Some have even decided to purchase  real estate properties for sale in Caramoan  to own a piece of paradise they can use as a  vacation home  or a business venture to showcase Caramoan’s beauty and earn profit. If you want to own a piece of paradise, look for properties on the island you can invest in and call your own.

When planning a trip to Caramoan, remember a few things to make the most of your experience. Here are some essential travel tips to help you prepare for your trip.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Caramoan is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. The weather is generally sunny and dry during this time, making it ideal for island hopping and beach activities. However, remember that this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

If you prefer to avoid crowds, you can visit during the rainy season from June to October. While it may rain frequently during this time, you can still enjoy the natural beauty of Caramoan, and you may even get better deals on accommodations and activities.

Environmental Fee

When visiting Caramoan, you must pay an environmental fee of PHP 75 per person. This fee goes towards maintaining and preserving the area’s natural resources. Be sure to always keep your receipt with you, as you may be asked to present it when exploring the islands.

What to Bring

Here are some essential items to bring with you on your Caramoan trip:

  • Sunscreen: The sun can be intense, so be sure to bring sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect your skin.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be a problem, especially during the rainy season, so bring insect repellent to keep them at bay.
  • Lightweight clothing: Caramoan is a tropical destination, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the heat.
  • Water shoes: Some of the beaches and islands have rocky terrain, so a pair of water shoes can come in handy.
  • Cash: While some establishments accept credit cards, bringing cash as a backup is still good. There are no ATMs on the islands, so get enough cash for your entire trip.

Remembering these travel tips, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable trip to Caramoan.

3 Days Caramoan Itinerary – Solo DIY Tips & Guide

The commute to Caramoan takes at least four hours from Naga City, Camarines Sur. Two hours land trip from Naga City to Sabang Beach and another two-hour ferry (pumpboat) ride going to Guijalo Port in Caramoan. After quick morning tour of Naga City, I took a tricycle to the FILCAB terminal located across SM City Naga. The (L300) van left Naga City at 8:15am and arrived in Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur by 10am. Sabang Beach was just a couple of steps from where the van dropped us off. Looking around the long gray sand beach, it was easy to find the makeshift ferry waiting area since many of the passengers were already huddled together in that section of the beach.

Naga City to Barrio Sabang, San Jose, Camarines Sur

Ferry from sabang beach to guijalo port, caramoan.

I waited for another 45 minutes until the ferry boat arrived in Sabang. The beach went into chaos as the arriving passengers were about to disembark. Several porters went into a frenzy as they rushed to the side of the boat and boisterously tried to catch the attention of the alighting passengers. As soon as the first passenger got off, I realized what was happening. Since the boat was still a couple of meters from the beach (in waist deep waters), the passengers had to be carried over the shoulder of the porters in order to avoid getting wet. Oh Shit! It meant we also had to do it to get on the boat.

I was anxiously standing at the shoreline not sure how to go about the porter selection process. Apparently, one of the porters had already chosen me and signaled that he had to load my backpack on the boat first. On the off chance that he’d get out balanced, I’d have all of my stuff wet including a few electronic devices. Seeing him carrying my bag above his head and wading through the wait-deep waters was excruciating enough, now, I’d have to undergo the ordeal myself. I wasn’t really afraid to get wet … it was my camera, which I carry on my sling bag, I was worried about. It’s like … the most expensive thing I own, and I’d saved up months for it. Anyways, when the porter got in front of me, he turned the other way and bent on one knee (kinda like the typical position during an engagement proposal … only backwards). I positioned both of my legs over his shoulders with his head, you know, between my thighs. The porter then stood up and struggled a bit to keep balance. It was so awkward to be carried by some random dude like that. The experience was quite emasculating :(

Finding a place to stay in Caramoan

Most tourists stay at the town center or “centro” of Caramoan. It’s in an inconvenient location for most since it’s landlocked and requires a tricycle/single motorcycle ride to get to Bikal Beach and Paniman Beach, the main jump-off points to the Caramoan Islands. I stayed at Rex Tourist Inn after reading a lot of positive online reviews. They have single rooms rented out for P300 per night (fan-cooled; shared TB). I loved my stay at Rex Tourist Inn since they had free WiFi. I wanted to visit Lake Bulusan on my last day in Bicol … it was a last minute decision and I didn’t know how to get there. Having internet access helped a lot :D

I also had my laundry done there for P80 (my clothes were well under 1 kilo, so I guess it’s their minimum rate). I give Rex Tourist Inn my “highly recommended for budget travelers” stamp!

Around Caramoan Centro

I had (late) lunch at a carinderia (local eatery) named Lutong Bahay located near Rex Tourist Inn. It ate there the whole time I was in Caramoan since it was cheap. A meal costs only around P50. Their Bicol Express was my daily staple :) It was nice to be able to eat the more authentic version of Bicol Express …. oh wait! Of course, it has to be authentic, I was still in Bicol. Their Bicol Express was kinda different from the ones I tasted in Legazpi and Naga, though.

Since I arrived in Caramoan late in the afternoon and didn’t notice any tourist groups during the ferry ride, it seemed unlikely that I would find a group, who’d be willing to let me join their island hopping tour of the islands. I walked around town hoping to find other tourists but didn’t find any  … probably because I went to Caramoan during low season (on a weekday) and the tourists that arrived that day were probably already off in the islands.

Booking an Island Hopping Tour of Caramoan Islands

I eventually inquired at one of the souvenir shops in town about the island hopping tours. They told me they could arrange the tour for me since the shop owner’s father owns a boat at Paniman Beach. There are two main island groups in Caramoan. I’m not sure what their formal names are but they’re known as the “Matukad Island Group” and the “Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group.” Both are located at a considerable distance from each other (probably 30 minutes by boat). Bikal Beach, situated at the mainland is the main jump-off point to Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group. While Paniman Beach is the main jump-off point to Matukad Island Group.

I was quoted a rate of P1,500 to visit the “Matukad group of islands,” P2,000 for “Sabitang Laya/Manlawi island group,” and P3,000 to visit 9 islands covering both island groups. My gosh, so expensive considering I’d have to pay for everything myself. Of course, I couldn’t leave Caramoan without going to any of its famed islands. I hope I still have enough cash to get back to the city … there aren’t any ATMs in Caramoan if I spent too much.

It was already mid-afternoon, too late to go island hopping. Spent two nights in Caramoan so I’d have a full day for the island hopping the next day.

Caramoan Peninsula National Park

Insane-looking limestone karsts formations, deep gorges, snaking rivers, white sandy beaches and clandestine coves characterize the remote Caramoan Peninsula National Park, a beautiful reminder that indeed, the Philippines is a nation of incomparable natural wonders in just about every nook and cranny of this archipelagic country.

caramoan travel brochure

Caramoan Peninsula National Park is located in the town of Caramoan, a sleepy and remote town of Camarines Sur. The peninsula barely received any attention outside of Camarines Sur until it was used as a setting for an edition of Survivor France, a franchise of that wildly popular reality TV show Survivor based in the United States. Since then, Survivor Israel, Bulgaria and Serbia followed suit and used the same location for their own Survivor franchises. The media then turned their sights on this erstwhile forgotten corner of Bicol and coupled with an aggressive tourism marketing campaign by the provincial government of  Camarines Sur  – Caramoan Peninsula is now high on many Filipino travelers’ lists of must go destinations.

In 1867, Franciscan Missionary Fray Francisco dela Cruz y Oropesa penetrated the dense forests of Caramoan Peninsula and probably liked what he saw there as he founded a Christian settlement in a place called Balwarte. This settlement was turned over to the Sagrada Mitra in 1696 for administration and a chapel was built out of nipa, bamboos and wood. The settlement grew into a bigger community which is now called as Caramoan which was apparently derived from a sea turtle abounding in the area at the time and which the local inhabitants called “Carahan.”

The chapel underwent several repairs and renovations and after almost 200 years, a permanent building was finally constructed made out of adobe, local stones and clay. The church was basically constructed out of slave labor under the direction of well-known artisans and masons. The current building withstood the ravages of time, as well as natural calamities such as typhoons and earthquakes as well as the challenges of the last World War.

Fast forward to present day Caramoan reveals a town still trying to adjust to the sudden deluge of tourists and travelers to the area trying to get to the much-vaunted islands off the coast. There are two main island groups off the Peninsula. The south islands (nearer to the province of Catanduanes) are composed, amongst others, of the most popular Matukad Island (with the islet lake on top with a rumored huge fish living in its waters), Lajos/Lahus Island, Hunungan Island, Gota Island (different from Gota Beach which is across it), and of course further away is Tinago (a cove with three small white sand beaches) and whose topography is strongly reminiscent of  Coron Island in Palawan . The triangular shaped cream-colored sandy beach of Sabitang Laya Island (and the coral beach of Tagas Island) meanwhile, is just about a third of the way to another set islands in the north which include Cotivas, Lahuy, Pitogo, and Minalahos Islands amongst others. However, some of these islands are closed off to the public whenever there is ongoing filming of any of the Survivor franchises. We were lucky to have met some of the eliminated contestants of the Survivor Serbia edition and even had the chance to share a few bites of a Serbian dish made by one of the contestants.

Sea kayaking, island hopping, rock-climbing, trekking, spelunking, snorkeling and camping are some of the most popular activities in the peninsula. However, challenges remain for the traveler and the local community as well. When we went there, Caramoan town had the feel of a shell-shocked town and whilst they were extremely helpful and friendly, you can definitely sense a reluctant vibe with the sudden rush of tourists to this peninsula. And we can fully understand why, mass tourism is an ugly and destructive form of tourism with travel agencies trying to cash in with this sudden interest in the area by sending heaps of tourists to Caramoan.

Having said that, tourism infrastructure in Caramoan is minimal to almost nonexistent. The roads are mostly dirt and gravel with some areas paved. Houses were hastily turned into inns and there seems to be no close coordination with the provincial government and the local government of Caramoan in anticipating the massive influx of tourists in the peninsula. From our sources in Bicol, the people of Caramoan were not too happy with this tourism phenomenon, considering it as a threat to their culture and laid back lifestyle as well as the local environment. Already we were seeing the reality of these threats – we saw vandalism on the surface of what would have been beautiful rock formations on Matukad Island, and we saw broken glass and pieces of garbage at Hunungan and Sabitang Laya. While what we found was largely manageable, we noticed that there were no sentries guarding or maintaining the national park. This problem should be addressed as soon as possible while it is still small and manageable.

You can also go spelunking at the national park in Omang Cave, Manipis Cave and Culapnitan Cave.

Skip Caramoan Peninsula when there is another Survivor filming as some of the islands will be closed off to the public. We heard from locals that the Survivor has a four year franchise set to end around next year at the earliest with Survivor USA apparently filming there.

Caramoan Peninsula does give island hopping a new meaning and coming there gives a feeling of being away from it all. This beautiful National Park offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and its many islands seem to duplicate the equally gorgeous Calamianes in Northern Palawan (although we do think that Coron is still more beautiful).

Best Time to Visit

Head out to Caramoan Peninsula during weekdays. Never ever go there during long weekends or holidays as in some popular islands – there are a lot of people trying to do that annoying and kitschy travel photography fad called the group jump shot.

Where to Stay

Gota Village Resort (http://caramoanislands.com) is the only beachfront resort/hotel that has passable international standards and offers most of the other activities in the peninsula but of course it comes with two downsides – rooms are very pricy, and it is totally closed off to the public when there is Survivor filming. Check their advisories on their website to be sure.

You may also check in with Rex Tourist Inn (Centro), and BC Hometel (Tawog) for cheap air-conditioned accommodations. We tried BC Hometel (+63.921.8357454) and save for some bugs (ants and an occasional bee) in the room and the air-conditioner leaking into the room – it was alright. A/C room for two is PhP500. The lodging places usually accept payments through Smart Money transactions so you may have to pay a deposit or the full amount in advance through Smart Money (you have to go to a Smart Telecom Office to remit money).

Where & What to Eat

There are not many of decent eating places in Caramoan. For travelers, there are probably two obvious choices – Lutong Bahay which makes uninspired mainstream Filipino dishes or the Kamalig which has a better ambience, pricier and fortunately has better menu choices. Bicol Express (pork in coconut milk and chilies) and Laing (taro leaves in coconut milk and chilies) are passable and their own version of fish soup (Tanguige Kusido) was quite interesting. The menu says that there is a maximum of 2-3 beers per person. Of course no one really follows that rule.

Caramoan town by itself is a very sleepy town with not much going day or night save for some karaoke joints. While stopping over at Bikal, we heard a guy screaming his guts out over a karaoke song. Horrible. Other than that, quiet dinners or just lazing by the beach with a drink in Gota is the best way to celebrate a night in Caramoan.

My to do List

1. Take a bottle of beer or two and go island hopping!** 2. Check out the lake on Matukad Island.* 3. Explore Tinago.* 4. Take photos! And if you have the money for it, take a plane and view the dramatic karst formations from above.* 5. Visit the centuries old church of Caramoan town.* 6. Do a river cruise along the dense mangroves.* 7. Rent a kayak and go sea kayaking.** 8. Camp! (Head out to the Municipal Hall first for this and mostly you have to bring your own gear.) *- Highly Recommended **- Recommended by Locals

Stay Away From

1. Mosquitoes! – just bring bug repellent to be sure 2. Stray animals: monkeys – rabies is prevalent all over the Philippines. 3. Getting wet, take Ziplocs with you for your gadgets and valuables. 4. Protect yourself from UV rays by putting on a sunblock. 5. Wear your flip-flops just to protect yourself from broken glass.

Getting There

From Naga City in Camarines Sur, it takes about 1.5 hours by van (PhP 90 last time we went there in August 2009) from the CBT (Central Bus Terminal) to the “port” of Sabang. This is not a real port but a beach where passengers sit on the backs/shoulders of porters who carry them over to the boat for PhP20.00- nothing more than that. From Sabang to Guijalo port, it is a 2 hour journey on a boat which seemed to be filled to the rafters with people (we did not sign any passenger manifest in Sabang) and with the life vests at the far end of the boat. Fee is about PhP 120-130 per person. From Guijalo to Caramoan Town is about 20 minutes (fee is about PhP100 for two people- same amount you pay from Caramoan town to Bikal port- the jump off point for the island hop) on mostly bad roads. The island hop costs about PhP 1,800 for the day for either but not both island groups.

You can also drive to Caramoan from Naga, but from Sabang to Caramoan – the roads are notoriously bad and the trip could take 6 hours in a four-wheel drive.

Camarines Sur (through the Naga Airport in Pili) can be accessed via plane (45 minutes ride). Zest Air, Philippine Airlnes and Cebu Pacific from Manila and vice-versa. Buses also ply the Manila-Naga route – Isarog, Peñafrancia, RSL, ECSI and Philtranco buses serve this route. There are also mini-vans and buses servicing Naga to other points of Bicol through it’s Central Bus Terminal. A more comfy ride through the Philippine National Railways is set to commence at the end of 2009 as well (+63.2.2549772) but can be a very, very slow way to reach Camarines Sur. If you are driving, make sure that you pick up a map and follow the scenic but sometimes hair-raising Pan-Philippine Highway.

caramoan travel brochure

Camarines Sur, also known as CamSur, in Southern Luzon is a noteworthy destination because it combines adventure sports, beautiful and unspoiled beaches, turquoise waters, and stunning countryside views. It’s the kind of destination that lets you go both fast and slow, with thrilling activities like wakeboarding, or away from the hustle and bustle of the city by sunbathing in some faraway beach.

The fastest and most convenient way to reach the region is by plane via Naga City. There are regular flights to and from Manila. Alternatively, visitors can take the bus to Naga. If you’re interested in exploring CamSur, here are the places to see and things to do.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Try Some Water Sports

Island-hopping in Caramoan

caramoan travel brochure

The Philippines has many islands within the confines of its provinces. This means that island-hopping is a popular activity for tourists wherever they go. A visit to Caramoan is a must while you’re in CamSur. The group of islands in this part of the province used to be the set of the hit reality TV franchise “Survivor”. Each island has its own charm and rugged beauty. You’ll see white sand shores, azure waters, lagoons, beautiful rock formations, and a middle-of-nowhere ambiance. The island-hopping costs around P1500 to P3000, depending on the places you visit.

Cool Off at Itbog Twin Falls

This picturesque waterfall in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Buhi has a towering cascade that is a sight to behold. You’ll need to hike to reach the waterfall, but it’s worth it. You can chill and grab a bite here but always leave only footprints and not trash.

Drop By Sabang Beach

This idyllic destination in San Jose, Camarines Sur is the perfect chill spot. It has light brown to dark-sand shore and cerulean waters. Get a tan, laze on the beach and swim in its warm waters. On a clear day, you might see both Mount Isarog and Mayon. To get here, board a Sabang-bound bus from Naga City and tell the driver you’ll alight once you reach the beach.

Explore Mt. Isarog National Park

Outdoorsy visitors will enjoy CamSur because of Mt. Isarog. The huge national park provides beautiful landscapes even if you don’t conquer its peak. For adventurous travelers, the trek will take them to stunning waterfalls and jaw-dropping cliffs. If you’re brave enough you can try rappelling or cliff-jumping. A tour can cost up to P3500 per person, but the price drops if you form a larger group than the minimum required. Packages often cover entrance fees, transportation, guides, equipment, and others.

Chase Waterfalls at Consocep Mountain Resort

View this post on Instagram A post shared by IamTonstravels 📍MNL,🇵🇭 (@iamtonstravels) on Feb 18, 2017 at 7:20am PST

If you have already visited the islands and beaches, go chase waterfalls in this beautiful mountain resort. Consocep has scenic trails that lead to Kawa-Kawa, Bulalacao, and Tumaguiti Waterfalls. The rugged terrain of Mt. Isarog is ideal for bikers who want a challenging but rewarding activity. Biking the trails around and in the national park will reward you with stunning views of the landscape and an up close look at the province’s bucolic countryside. You might have to bike or hike up and down slopes or dirt roads. There are also events that showcase the biking trails of the national park.

Where to Stay in Camarines Sur

Naga City is an ideal base to explore the province’s attractions. You’ll have more choices that are within your budget, whether you are willing to splurge or save money. CARAMOAN ITINERARY

Day 1 caramoan itinerary.

Obviously the best thing to do in Carmoan is island hopping. There are two island hopping in Caramoan the whole day tour and half day tour. For the first day we will choose the whole day tour. And we will write all the details below.

ISLAND HOPPING IN CARAMOAN

Caramoan island hopping the whole day.

The prices for a long trip island hopping in Caramoan is  2500 PHP . You will visit 4 islands: Guinahoan, Lewan Beach, Cotivas Beach, Manlawi Sandbar, Sabitanglaya and Bag-ing. It takes an hour from Bikal port to reach these destinations and one hour to come back. Between the islands expect boat rides 15-20 minutes. The whole day was around 8-9 hours until we came back to Bikal port in Caramoan.

We decided to go at 6 am from Bikal Port. There is a carinderia if you want to buy food and snacks in Bikal Port. You can also find bakeries open around Caramoan town at 6 am. Make sure you pack something since later you will not find food in the islands.

You can check pictures below of these islands and beaches!

GUINAHOAN ISLAND

Guinahoan Island was our first stop in the island hopping in Caramoan. You have to do a small hike around 10 minutes. It was really cool the hike since locals are joining to guide you to the top of the island where you can see the lighthouse. The walk is easy and with green areas.

The best surprise was the views from the lighthouse to Lewan Beach. After the trekking we bought a couple of coconuts for  25 PHP  each. There is an entrance fee of  50 PHP  for parking the boat and  15 PHP  per adult. Total  80 PHP  for all of us. The locals will love to go around with you to the lighthouse.

LEWAN BEACH

We couldn’t stop taking pictures from the top of Guinahoan Island. Lewan Beach has difficult access and we just took the views from the top of the lighthouse. The views are amazing!

COTIVAS BEACH

What a beautiful beach next to Guinahoan Island. The water is clear and you can do snorkeling. The beach is clean and there is an entrance fee of  50 PHP  for parking the boat. If you want to rent a cottage is only  50 PHP .

We just stayed swimming, taking pictures for long time in this beach since we loved it. And we only saw 2-3 boats doing island hopping in Caramoan that day. It was our favorite Caramoan tourist spot in the island hopping and we spent a few hours.

MANLAWI SANDBAR

Manlawi Sandbar is close to Cotivas Beach 15 minutes boat ride. You can rent a cottage to have lunch and a couple of fishermen were offering fish if you wanted to buy for lunch. We rented a kayak for  100 PHP  half an hour, if you decide to stay longer is  200 PHP  for one hour.

Make sure you ask your boatmen about the low tide to see the sand bar. Anyway the area is great with clear water and the cottages over water.

There is no entrance fee and you can even go walking to the sand bar since the boat can’t go inside with the low tide. It was fun kayaking around, taking pictures and flying the drone.

Han had so much fun kayaking for the first time and we managed himself really good. We were surprised with only 7 years old he could kayak on his own.

SABITANG LAYA AND BAG-ING

Sabitanglaya and Bag-ing is popular because they shot Survivor on TV. At that time they weren’t filming that’s why we could visit. If they are filming Survivor show you aren’t allowed to visit those islands. There is no entrance fee and the water is so clear. You can do snorkeling a few minutes boat ride before coming back to Caramoan.

We stayed for an hour and we would love to stay longer. But there were jellyfish and started raining so we decided to go back to Caramoan and finishing our island hopping.

DAY 2 ITINERARY IN CARAMOAN

For the second day the half day tour. We decided to do first thing in the morning. But it’s only 4-5 hours so up to you what is adapting better to your schedule.

CARAMOAN ISLAND HOPPING HALF DAY

The prices for a short trip or half day tour are  1500 PHP  good enough for 6-8 people you pay per boat. So if you share with more people will be cheaper. You will visit 4 destinations: Lahos Beach, Matukad Beach, Kagbalinad Island and Minalahos Beach.

The travel time is usually 4-5 hours. It takes only 30 minutes going from Bikal port to the islands. And later for moving around the beaches and Caramoan tourist spots only 10 minutes.

LAHOS BEACH

Our first stop in Caramoan island hopping with amazing rocks and clear waters. We got there alone and the views with the drone were brethtaking. It’s only 30 minutes boat ride from Bikal Port. In front of this island you can see Matukad Beach.

MATUKAD BEACH

Peaceful place half and hour boat ride from Caramoan. You can enjoy swimming, walking around, taking pictures. Check out the views from the drone. We loved it the white sand in this beach.

KAGBALINAD ISLAND

Kagbalinad Island was our favorite in the list of Caramoan tourist spots in the short island hopping in Caramoan. In front of Hunongan Cove Resort. You will find this small beach where you can swim and relax. The water is so clear and calm.

MINALAHOS BEACH

A very small beach between two giant rocks just 20 minutes ride from Bikal Port in Caramoan. It was our last stop in the island hopping half day tour.

MORE DAYS CARAMOAN ITINERARY

If you finish early the half tour day you will have the opportunity to visit more spots in Caramoan. Also if you stay longer than two days in Caramoan you can discover the places below beaches, churches, waterfalls and caves.

We got beautiful views from our boat of Gota Beach. But we didn’t have time to visit this time. As you can see looks a peaceful and quiet place to visit.

LAHUY BEACH

Lahuy Beach is close to Manlawi Sandbar and you can see as part of the island hopping full day in Caramoan. The beaches are quiet. It takes around one hour from Caramoan port to get there.

PITOGO BEACH

Pitogo Beach is a pebble shore where you can enjoy the landscape. It takes an hour to reach there from Bikal port. There is an entrance fee of  30 PHP .

HUNONGAN COVE

Just in front of Kagbalinad Island you can see the Hunongan Cove Resort. We just flew the drone around to get these views. You can also rent a kayak to go around since the water is so calm it will be easy.  It’s around 30 minutes by baot from Bikal port. A perfect one of the Caramoan tourist spots for relaxing.

TINAGO BEACH

Tinago Beach is a beautiful one in Caramoan with rock formations. They usually use to film Survivor. So if you go in peak season maybe you will not be able to visit. But for sure you can visit in low season in Caramoan. It takes almost an hour from Bikal port to reach there.

KULAPNIT CAVE

If you want to visit Kulapnit Cave as part of the island hopping in Caramoan will be different to the beaches and islands. We couldn’t manage to get there but we will make sure that we visit this cave next time. You can see bats inside!

BULANG-BUGANG CAVE

Bulang-bugang Cave another cave in Caramoan. This one is an underwater cave that you can access at the bottom of a rock formation. You can find next to Oroc-Osoc.

LAYAHAN FALLS

Layahan Falls and Hugsad Falls are close each other. You will have to hike crossing the river. It will take more than an hour to reach there. Make sure that you were proper shoes for trekking.

TAYAK LAGOON

To access Tayak Lagoon is required trekking and climbing rocks. If you enjoy climbing, here is a challenge for you. You can see corals, fishes and even turtles.

ST. MICHAEL ARCHANGEL CHURCH

St. Michael Archangel Church is called the Red Church from 16th Century in Spaniard times. It’s located in Caramoan town. It’s different from the other Caramoan tourist spots since is a historical site.

PANIMAN BEACH

We  just passed by Paniman Beach during our island hopping in Caramoan. Similar to the other beaches with white sand and clear water in Caramoan.

TREK TO MT. CAGLAGO

Trekking to Mount Caglago with 500-steps to the summit will have the reward of the 360 degree view of Caramoan Islands. Also you can see on the top the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Mother of Peace.

WHAT TO BRING IN CARAMOAN

There is no electricity in the Island hopping. So make sure you bring your devices full charge of bringing power banks.

The boats are small and if it’s raining as it happened to us all your belongings will be wet. So make sure you bring dry bag and extra plastics to cover everything just in case to be safe while visiting Caramoan tourist spots.

There are  no food sellers in the island , only a couple of kiosks sending food and water.

There is  no drinkable water  and there is no electricity.

There is almost everywhere  phone signal in Caramoan . The data is weak but you will get it!

Bring your  sunblock .

Bring your own food  if you are planning to spend the day or overnight. There are carinderias near the port in Bikal where you can buy food. Bring cash, don’t expect there are ATM’s or exchange offices in paradise ha!

Take pictures everywhere  with your camera.

Take  underwater shots  with the done or underwater camera.

Of course if you have a  drone  fly it around.

Bring your snorkeling mask since the boatmen will not have available. You can’t miss the opportunity of swimming around the clear waters.

Very Important: Please make sure you bring a bag to collect your trash  so you can keep clean Caramoan Island and as we always do. By the way our little Han never forgets about it and before swimming he makes sure that he collects a bag of trash. Also if you have a spare plastic bag for the trash you can use for collecting the garbage around. And we will keep Caramoan amazing for the next time that we are visiting!

WHERE TO STAY IN CARAMOAN

There are two areas to stay in Caramoan Island. You can stay in Bikal Port and in Caramoan town. The tricycle going from the town to the port is  150 PHP  for 6 kilometers and it takes 15-20 minutes. We decided to stay in the town since the data connection was stronger. There are more option for bars and restaurants in the town plus the Bus Terminal is inside the town.

Prices for the accommodation are starting for  800 PHP to 4000 PHP  depending on your budget and comfort. We stayed at River View for  800 PHP  per night a room with bathroom and air conditioning. It was a friendly place and they attened us really good.

Bicol Philippines: Ultimate Travel Guide 2024

Sharing is caring!

Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

This article may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to yourself. This helps towards the upkeep of this website for which I am grateful.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

Map of Bicol Region Philippines

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc.

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

If you would like to experience the festival culture that Bicol tourist spot is famous for, then check out the calendar here and plan your visit to fall during these times of the year.

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay.

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

A cultural hotspot, home to numerous churches, monuments, and historical sites such as Parroquia de San Juan Bautista – one of the oldest churches in Bicol.

Where to Stay in Bicol Province

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

  • In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
  • For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
  • Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.
  • During August, Legazpi City holds the Ibalong Festival, decidated to the folk story of Ibalong, where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.
  • In September, Naga City holds one of the busiest festivals in Bicol, attracting more than six million people a year. The Peñafrancia Festival is held to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
  • During Christmas, Naga Bicol also holds the Kamundagan Festival which includes lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, and includes different fantasy themed Christmas shows held each night until Christmas Eve.
