Best safari clothing: brands, clothes & tips for African safaris

elegant safari style

You’re off on safari! You’ve done all the research , purchased the guide books , and the tickets are hot in your hand.

But most importantly, you’re getting ready to pack your ultra-light bag with everything you’ll need for your trip of a lifetime.

You’ve read all the advice you can handle (perhaps even this post on how to pack for safaris for your African bush adventure).

But when it comes down to the line, you still have no idea whether your favorite sweater is going to be a help or a hindrance, if you should pack jeans, how many pairs of socks are enough, and what on earth to expect once you are out in the wild.

What to wear on safari is something of a conundrum , the answer to which is entirely dependent on whether you are a complete slave to fashion and constantly worry about your appearance.

Or whether you don’t care if your trousers absolutely match your shirt and if your shoes co-ordinate properly with your camera bag.

So, in a bid to help sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to safari style, this guide aims to highlight the best safari clothing brands and tips for your next trip to Africa .

African Safari Clothes: 7 Useful Tips

The African savanna has seen virtually every take on both the best and worst dressed safari goers , including some of the most practical and impractical safari gear around.

This includes everything from haute couture animal prints hot off the Milan catwalk, to Prada stilettos getting stuck in between the slats of wooden decks, and $300 silk scarves ripped to shreds by thorn bushes.

There are also tales of wild baboons getting hold of Victoria’s Secret lingerie and leaving it draped for all to see high in the branches of an acacia tree.

There are plenty of stories about complete wardrobe disasters—but to ensure you’re not one of them, here is a list of useful tips on how to dress for safaris .

1. Leave the luxury safari clothing at home

Lesson 1 in safari style is to NEVER take your best clothes into the bush .

If you find a pair of shorts, trousers, or a top you love and know that it would break your heart to have it ruined on safari, it’s probably best to leave it at home .

Instead, look for clothing that is specifically suited for the wild . And if the item comes in different colors, buy the range!

This way, over the years, you’ll acquire a variety of clothes which come everywhere with you. Look out for clothes that you can team together to create practical yet stylish outfits.

2. Keep your clothes for safari simple

Lesson 2 is learning how many of each item you will need . As a rule of thumb, always go with four of the basics.

Four pairs of shorts , four pairs of cut-off pants , four string vests , four t-shirts , four pairs of long pants , four button-through shirts (two of which are long-sleeved), four sets of underwear , four pairs of socks … you get the drift, I am sure!

When traveling in winter or during the colder months of the year, add to this scenario two lightweight long-sleeve t-shirts and two knitted sweaters , plus two fleeces or warm jackets , thermal long johns , gloves , a scarf , and a beanie .

When considering your safari apparel, ALWAYS pack a swimsuit and a couple of sarongs/kikoys . Even in the winter, it’s usually warm enough to suntan during the day and sometimes even swim.

3. Your safari wear should include comfortable shoes

Low angle view of two safari guides and an elephant bone

Lesson 3 concerns footwear . In the heat of the summer, it is best to pack at least two pairs of “bush slops” – flip flops (thongs) which are heavy-duty, waterproof, and good enough to handle walking in the light bush for game drives.

You may also need two or three pairs of fashionable flip-flops or sandals for around camp and evening meals, and a pair of good walking shoes ( Merrells ) for walking safaris.

In the winter, replace the walking shoes with walking boots and add a pair of lightweight faux-fur lined “trendy” flat boots for evening wear.

4. Safari fashion: accessories

Accessorize – that’s the key to lesson 4 – it’s the difference between a good safari wardrobe and a bad one. Two or three lightweight colored scarves and/or wraps are a must in any safari bag .

Usually, they have beadwork or applique of some description on them. These are useful for dressing up even the most conservative safari outfit—great if you’re looking to add a dash of glamor to your evening meals. Team them up with a couple of great “ethnic” bead necklaces and earrings .

Another essential item to include with your safari attire is a hat —and these can most certainly be fun. Pack in a couple of lightweight, floppy straw sun-hats, as these are great for game drives or tiger fishing.

Another good option is the usual peak baseball-style caps.

5. What to wear on safari – quality

Typical clothes to wear on an African safari

Lesson 5 is all about quality . Everything you take into the bush with you needs to stand the test of time.

This includes the elements of the African wild, the rigors of hand-washing, and bumping and grinding in the back of a safari vehicle halfway across Africa.

So it’s important to check your clothes before you pack to make sure they can be hand-washed, aren’t going to fall apart the first time you wear them, and are not likely to fade too drastically when hung in the sun to dry.

The material of your clothing is also important. When out in the wild, it is best to stick to strong natural materials like hemp , linen , leather , and wool .

Nylon and polyester also tend to provide adequate protection against the elements.

6. Best safari clothing brands

Wondering where to buy safari clothes? Most of the high-street fashion chains carry good quality fashionable safari clothes which will stand up to the average safari conditions.

As such, you may be able to avoid the need to go to specialist outfitters and camping/outdoor stores where things tend to cost a lot more.

And, of course, the big brands like Jeep (a favorite with safari goers because their clothes are practical, hard-wearing, and pretty at the same time) and Cat always have some great clothes for safaris—including some of the best safari shirts.

In addition to these, here are several more reliable brands to consider when buying safari clothes:

  • Columbia — this is a good option for those seeking affordable safari clothing that is still good quality.
  • First Ascent — if you’re buying safari clothes in South Africa, keep an eye out for this brand as it offers some excellent quality clothing.
  • Patagonia — while the brand is more expensive, they provide some of the highest quality outdoor clothing and gear on the market.
  • REI — if you’re shopping online, REI is often the go-to for outdoor gear. Their house brand is affordable and offers many items that will serve you well on your safari.
  • Ruggedwear — proudly South African, it is an official partner of the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA).
  • Sapmok — footwear for every adventure. Comfy. Durable. And stylish.

7. What color clothing for African safaris

Woman observing African elephants from her safari vehicle

Finally, lesson 7 concerns white . Do you take white clothes into the bush with you? Hell yes.

As long as you don’t expect them to remain white for long and can accept the fact that no matter where you wear them, they’re bound to get a little dirty. It’s more or less a bush essential in my book because it reflects sunlight , keeps you cool and goes with everything .

Everyone says, “don’t wear white on a safari vehicle,” – but this is far from the truth. However, white isn’t the only color that’s good for safaris.

When dressing for safaris, the basic color range is simple: khaki , beige , white, and brown (or variations thereof).

Avoid black and blue during the day because they attract tsetse flies .

But do occasionally take these colors for evening wear when the tsetses have gone to bed.

Safari shirts can be worn with shorts, pants, or skirts, and can be tucked in or left out. They are ideal for protecting against the sun and insects.
  • Safari pants and shorts: These are comfortable and versatile bottoms that can be worn in different climates and terrains. They are often khaki, beige, or olive in color, and have multiple pockets for storing essentials. Safari pants and shorts can be made of cotton, linen, or synthetic fabrics that are lightweight and quick-drying. They can be paired with safari shirts, jackets, or vests.

Dressing for the Wild: Practical and Stylish Safari Style Tips

1. prioritize comfort without sacrificing style.

When packing for a safari, comfort should be your top priority. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay cool in the African heat. Loose-fitting clothing not only enhances comfort but also protects from the sun. Our private safaris in Tanzania often encounter varying climates, so layering is key. A light jacket or a long-sleeved shirt can be a game-changer during chilly mornings or evenings.

However, comfort doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Choose earthy tones and neutral colors that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Not only does this camouflage you amidst the flora and fauna, but it also captures the essence of safari chic.

2. The Safari Hat: A Stylish Shield

Your choice of head wear can make a significant impact on both your style and comfort. A wide-brimmed hat not only adds a touch of elegance to your safari ensemble but also shields you from the harsh African sun. Opt for a hat with a chin strap to ensure it stays in place during game drives or walks. This small accessory can be a game-changer, providing both practicality and a dash of safari sophistication.

3. Footwear Matters: Choose Comfortable and Sturdy

Exploring the wilderness requires sturdy footwear that can handle different terrains. A comfortable pair of hiking boots or closed-toe sandals with excellent grip will make your safari experience more enjoyable. Neutral tones, like khaki or beige, work well and complement the safari aesthetic. Remember, a well-chosen pair of shoes protects your feet and can elevate your entire safari look.

4. Embrace Utility with Stylish Safari Accessories

Accessories can be your best allies when it comes to safari style. A versatile scarf can double as a fashion statement and protection from the sun or chilly evenings. Choose accessories with earthy tones or tribal patterns to add an authentic touch to your ensemble. Sunglasses, a classic watch, and a spacious yet stylish backpack complete the safari look, offering both practicality and flair.

Blend Fashion and Functionality on Mt. Kilimanjaro Climbing Tours

5. layering for success.

When it comes to Mount Kilimanjaro trekking or climbing tours, the key is to master the art of layering. The temperature can vary dramatically as you ascend, and being prepared is essential. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add insulating layers for warmth, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer. This adaptable approach ensures you stay comfortable while conquering the majestic Kilimanjaro.

6. Durable Gear for the Climb

Investing in high-quality gear is a non-negotiable aspect of preparing for Mt. Kilimanjaro climbing tours. A sturdy backpack, well-fitted hiking boots, and weather-appropriate outerwear are essentials. While practicality is paramount, choosing gear with sleek designs and neutral colors can keep you trekking in style. After all, reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro should be an accomplishment celebrated with both awe and fashion finesse.

Whether you’re on a game drive in the Serengeti or conquering the heights of Kilimanjaro, let your wardrobe resonate with the wild.

7. Mix and Match Safari-Inspired Prints

Infuse a bit of the local culture into your safari style by incorporating prints inspired by African wildlife or traditional patterns. Animal prints, earthy tones, and tribal motifs can be seamlessly blended into your wardrobe. From scarves and shirts to accessories like bracelets or necklaces, these prints add a touch of authenticity to your ensemble, connecting you with the vibrant spirit of the safari.

8. Capture the Moment: Dress for the Photo Ops

Every safari moment is a photo opportunity, and your outfit plays a starring role. Opt for well-coordinated, photogenic outfits that stand out against the natural backdrop. What to Wear on Safari Evenings

Going on a Safari? Try These Stylish Safari Outfit Ideas

Your choice of what to wear on a safari evening will be determined by where you will be dining that evening.

It is recommended to wear clothes that cover your legs and arms if you will be dining outdoors, to keep the cold away.

Bugs like beetles, and moths that are attracted to the abundance of light where you seated outdoors, especially in an area that is generally very dark. Mosquitoes can also be very irritating! Wear clothes that cover you to prevent bites.

Keep the dresses, shorts, skirts and short sleeves away, and go for jeans or long khaki pants, long-sleeved tops, and closed flat shoes.

Also, avoid colors like white and yellow while in such an environment as insects are drawn to such bright colors.

On the flip side, if you’ll be dining indoors, perhaps in a restaurant, then you can wear anything.

What Kind of Shoes Should You Wear On A Safari?

Going on a Safari? Try These Stylish Safari Outfit Ideas

Most safari destinations have no smooth floors, from the wild expeditions to the safari lodges. You want to bring comfortable shoes like boots and keep the high heels away so you can be comfortable walking.

Sneakers, sandals and flat espadrilles are perfect, comfortable and stylish options as well.

African Safari Outfit Inspiration

My recent African safari was a dream come true – it’s been on my bucket list for ages!

I was beyond excited for this trip of a lifetime: watching the animals in the wild, as they should be! I was really happy even before traveling as we were visiting remote areas in Tanzania like Mahale and Katavi. I knew it was going to be an unforgettable experience!

Before every trip, the same question comes to my mind: “ what to pack?”.  My African adventure was no exception.

I found it challenging when I started packing: I wanted to keep my outfits stylish but also functional and comfortable, and I was not planning to spend a fortune on new clothing!

Besides, Tanzania is mostly Muslim and conservative so I had to avoid any revealing outfits.

I was lucky to find many cute safari styles available in fashion shops right before traveling to Tanzania. This way I was able to “travel chic” with dresses as I like to do. You can never go wrong with dresses!

Disclaimer: you can stop reading now if you don’t care about how to safari in style!

Shirt Dress + Ankle Boots

Khaki dress + safari hat, pants + top + functional shirt, jumpsuit + converse, white dress + straw hat, flowy dress + sandals, swimsuit + flip flops, mosquito repellent bracelets.

What to wear on a safari in a nutshell:

  • Choose neutral colors like beige, tan or khaki.
  • Avoid wearing red (it may scare the animals) and blue or black (they both attract the Tse-Tse flies).
  • Also, avoid patterns like leopard or camouflage.
  • Wear natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
  • Bring layers: a light jacket or a scarf come very handy in early game drives and night safaris.
  • Last but not least: you must pack a maximum of 15kg!

Get some safari outfit inspiration through my own pictures!

When I first saw this dress at the shop I automatically knew I had to pack it for the safari in Tanzania. I felt like Meryl Streep in Out of Africa when I was wearing it! But no, Robert Redford was not around this time.

I styled this dress with a pair of ankle boots from Karma of Charme, an Italian brand with a cute shop in Ibiza. They were super comfy but to be honest, I love to be barefoot whenever I can and I did most of the time on the jeep.

Out of Africa Safari Outfit

This khaki dress in linen was one of my favorite outfits during the trip and I wore it a few times. The fabric is cool and perfect for the hot temperatures and I styled it with a safari-style hat that I borrowed from my friend Layla.

Safari Style Khaki Dress

It’s very rare to see me wearing pants! Well, I did while in Mahale. We went on an easy trek 2 different days to find the chimps into the wild and wearing pants was the best idea.

The first day I styled my joggers with a white blouse while the second I went for this white top and functional shirt with pockets. This type of shirt is very convenient when changing camera lenses!

Safari Outfit Style

If you don’t feel as comfortable as I do with maxi dresses but you want to safari in style, a loose jumpsuit can be perfect! I wore this golden jumpsuit with white sneakers for one early morning game drive.

What To Wear On Safari

Before the trip, I was told that while on a safari you can get really dusty, but you also have free time in between animal encounters. I decided to pack one of my favorite white dresses along with my favorite straw hat to be worn for chill moments at the lodge – and I ended up wearing it on a game drive too. Our safari in Katavi couldn’t be described as dusty at all!

Safari Outfit Style

Besides the white dress, I packed a flowy maxi dress for the moments at the lodges. For me it’s the most comfortable thing ever and plus, they look awesome for sunset pictures!

Safari Flowy Dress

If you’re planning to stay at a lodge, check in advance if it has a pool as many of them do. It’s really nice to relax and cool down in between game drives – unless you fancy have a siesta.

You can also mix and match your swimsuit with your safari pants!

Safari Style Swimsuit

I’m a big fan of Gatta Bag and not only because Diana, the creative behind the brand is my friend. I really love the product after being using it for more than a year now for almost all my trips. My Lola bag still looks brand new.

During this trip, I fitted a mirrorless camera, 3 different zoom lenses, my iPhone 8plus and a big battery pack in my Lola bag and there was still room for more!

Remember that you need to fit all your outfits in one duffel or soft shell bag. Double-check the baggage allowance of your airline as they usually allow 15-20kg maximum.

Don’t forget your sunglasses! Aviator or fake Carey sunglasses are good options.

My friend Layla brought mosquito repellent bracelets for all the group: and they worked! Some of them were actually cute and they last around 2 weeks. I’m still wearing it because it looks good and also reminds me of the trip.

And that’s how I rocked the safari-style in Tanzania! Not bad for a first-timer, huh? Let me know if you like to travel in style too in the comments 🙂

If you’ve liked this post, pin it for later!

Hello girl! I experienced the African Safari in Katavi National Park, a remote area in Tanzania where – unlikely other touristy national parks – there were very few jeeps and the experience was incredible. I’ll be sharing more blog posts soon but you can find my Katavi gallery with wildlife photos on the top menu. Kisses!

Thanks! I can’t wait to read your other blog posts about the safari!

You can find some other blog posts already and some others are on the making! Hope you like them xx

It’s easy to safari in style! There’s no need to dress as if you were hiking as you spent most of the time on the jeep. Thank you for commenting!

I’ve wanted to go on an African safari since I was a child, and since you’re looking super stylish and lovely in all these pics, I think I’ll definitely be keeping this guide handy for when I get there!! You look great! And mosquito bracelets sound awesome; I’m constantly getting bitten!

That’s my case too, I’m always being eaten alive by mosquitos but these bracelets worked so well!

Really lovely outfits ! I am going to Tanzania soon, and now I am full of inspiration to go on a little shopping spree ! Thanks!

What to wear during the evening on safari

What to wear during the evening on safari

Nothing beats having a relaxing shower or bath and then putting on a crisp, clean shirt after a long day in the sun on safari.

While we recommend safari clothing in neutral colours and technical fabrics during the day on safari, there is a lot more freedom around what to wear at the lodge in the evenings. If you are going on safari and don’t know what to wear at the end of the day, here are some top tips on safari eveningwear.

1. The great white shirt

At the end of a hot and dusty day exploring the African bush, few things are as satisfying as having a bath or shower and slipping into a crisp white shirt. Get ‘Out of Africa’ style with our range of white shirts or shop our travel and outdoor range .

2. Timeless safari style in fashionable safari clothes

Safari styling is always in vogue. The Mara&Meru™ Mara&Meru Serengeti T-Shirt and the Mara&Meru™ Mara&Meru™ Jogger Pants are the simple way to channel safari elegance at dinner on safari – or pair the Rufiji™ Safari Shirt Dress with a pair of leggings to convert your game drive favourite into a sophisticated evening outfit.

3. When the sun goes down, grab a fleece, safari jacket, and knitwear

It can get quite chilly during the evenings on safari, which is why we recommend always taking a warmer layer on safari. Take your fleece, jacket, and beanie or scarf along with you to dinner and stay snug and warm as you tell safari stories next to the fire. Depending on the temperature, you may opt for trousers or slacks over bare legs during the evening.

4. If suitcase space is limited, your safari clothing is made for style

With the strict luggage limitations on safari, suitcase space comes often comes at a premium. Our Rufiji™ and Mara&Meru™ range of men’s and women’s safari clothing is designed to be practical when you are out and about without compromising on style. Our shirts have a stylish cut and fit and look just the part during the evening on safari. Our safari boots and shoes have been made in Africa for Africa and these genuine leather designs - from laced combat boots and the classic Chelsea ankle boot to the Rufiji™ Explorer Shoes in a veldskoen design - are a natural fit for evenings on safari too. Shop men’s safari clothing and women’s safari clothing .

5. Tuck these essentials in your satchel at night

We recommend packing a lightweight, compact torch for evenings on safari. Keep an eye out for insects, reptiles, and wildlife which may have wondered into camp – and do some animal-spotting from the safety of the lodge. It is also a good idea to take your insect repellent with you to avoid mosquito bites when they are most active in the evenings.

Practicality Meets Style

At the heart of safari style lies the iconic khaki look – a timeless ensemble characterized by its earthy hues, utilitarian details, and rugged aesthetic. How to Create a Safari Style Living Room

by Jeanne Caldwell 11/21/2021

elegant safari style

Safari style in interior design describes the harmony of rich and earthy elements of African design combined with the clean comfort of traditional European style. If you’re looking to try out this design style for your next living room makeover, this is a great place to start. Here we’ll go over some ideas to create a beautiful and comfortable safari-style living room design.

Focus On Natural Materials

A simple way to create a foundation for your safari design is to emphasize natural materials found in traditional African lifestyles. Choose materials like real wood, leather and rattan for furniture and decorative accents. Of these materials wood is the most important to the aesthetic, especially hand-carved pieces in dark stains. Mixing textures will make the space feel comfortable and eclectic while still on-theme.

Go for Light & Airy Window Treatments

Window treatments are another way to bring the African safari style into a room. Go for shades of white or cream in sturdy but comfortable fabrics like linen and hemp. These light-colored drapes are evocative of the European colonial style tent walls and also come with the added benefit of keeping the room cool while blocking out harsh sunlight.

Use the Right Amount of Animal Print

Animal prints might seem like an obvious suggestion in creating a safari style interior, but it’s important to use this element carefully to avoid creating visual clutter. Opt for animal prints in neutrals rather than bold colors—the more natural and close to the original animal’s coloring the better. You can mix animal prints, but be aware of scale. For example, a tiny cheetah print will go well with a larger-striped zebra print without clashing.

Pair Earthy Neutrals & Vivid Patterns

Earthy tones like brown, sandy beige and muted greens are perfect for safari style design. However, don’t be afraid to add in some more vivid color as well. Traditional African tribal textiles and patterns come in a rainbow of colors that you can mix in with soft neutrals to achieve a balanced but exciting aesthetic. You can also add in color with decor like wall art, throw blankets and lamps.

Create a Sense of Adventure

If you’re struggling to not go overboard with bold prints and animal motifs, another direction to go with your decorating is to evoke aspects of an adventurous lifestyle. Antique suitcases or travel packs, binoculars, globes and vintage maps all make excellent decorative options in a safari living room. You also can’t go wrong with hand-carved animal figurines, tribal masks and wooden beadwork. Picking a specific native animal as your inspiration can be a fun way to create a theme in your decorating, too.

Don’t Forget the Foliage

Many popular houseplants are actually native to Africa, which means you can enhance the aesthetic in an authentic way. Snake plants are classic low-maintenance options that purify the air, as are ZZ plants and the bountiful spider plant. If your living room gets a lot of direct sunlight, jade is another native African plant that will add dynamic live greenery to the space.

These are only basic guidelines for achieving this exciting and comfortable design style. The details are all up to your preference and will ultimately help you build the style to fit your specific needs. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating your own unique safari style living room.

The Golden Rules of Proportion: Decor Laws You Need to Know

Why The Safari Jacket Is 2024’s Most Stylish And Practical Menswear Item

Josh Sims

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

It’s the badass outerwear of choice for style icons like Ernest Hemingway and Clint Eastwood, one that historically was less about dressing for dinner, rather about catching it. And yet, the safari jacket still divides.

That’s because get it right, and you look straight-from-the-fridge cool. But get it wrong, and you look the part of the Great White Hunter. Get it right, and you look Burt Reynolds-level macho. Get it wrong, and you just look plain awkward. But, ask any menswear expert, and they’ll soon tell you it’s worth the risk.

Never mind the practical benefits – room to carry your stuff; light enough to wear all summer. The safari jacket is a design classic, whether you’re in the real thing or one of fashion’s many interpretations, and it may just be the only cool jacket you need for the balmier months.

What Is A Safari Jacket?

men's safari jacket

Take the practicality of the military style field jacket – a tough cotton or cotton-blend fabric formed into a loose-fitting, mid-length garment with four bellows pockets at the chest and hip. Now do it in a more general purpose shade of beige, in a lighter-weight, breathable fabric like linen or cotton drill and add details such as an open neck, epaulettes and a belt to keep everything pulled together and in order.

There you have it: the safari jacket – a kind of field-meets-shooting jacket, substantial enough to wear a layer underneath, insubstantial enough to wear next to the skin or for the sleeves to be easily rolled ready to go hunting in, even if that’s just for the next bar.

Why You Need A Safari Jacket Today

Saint Laurent, which is credited with thrusting the style into the mainstream, famously still offers one, of course. But there’s a good reason why designers including Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, and brands like Abercrombie and Barbour have versions too. It just works. When it’s too hot for a proper jacket, but the event calls for something smarter than just a shirt, the safari jacket – functional in the outback, smart in a more urban jungle setting – works.

“The safari jacket is bittersweet – it can look like you’re wearing a costume, but the fact is that it’s great for the summer,” says Gieves & Hawkes creative director John Harrison. “They make quite a statement, but they really do the job.”

What’s more, it’s not a capital ‘F’ fashion piece either. That doesn’t mean a good quality example won’t be wearable for years to come. Just think khaki, cotton, classic. Its versatility is well documented, and it’s the ideal accompaniment to selvedge denim or, when the occasion calls, sharp tailoring. In short, it’s the ultimate trophy piece.

Safari Jacket Style Tips

Don’t overdo it.

The safari jacket is designed to be the star of the show, so allow it to take over, and avoid wearing anything else that attempts to compete with it for attention. If in doubt, muted basics are the order of the day, so throw it over a simple T-shirt and foot with dark denim and minimalist sneakers.

Aim High or Low

Much like other pieces in the menswear hall of fame, it’s possible to dress the safari jacket both up and down. Whether you wear it over a shirt, knitted tie and dark flannel trousers to appear smart or with white jeans and deck shoes for a Riviera feel, try leaving the jacket open but tying the belt across the middle for a nonchalant look.

Re-appropriate It

Unless en route to a fancy dress a party, don’t attempt the all-out utility look. If you’re wearing a safari jacket, avoid also wearing khakis, combat pants, or bush hat. It’s important to re-appropriate the safari jacket from its original setting as an upscale piece to avoid looking like someone who’s lost his shotgun.

Play Around With Fabric

The safari jacket is made by its pattern, but different materials can provide different effects. Linen ages well, making for a jacket that will take on a timeworn look; suede has more of an eveningwear feel, so works well for guys with a smarter wardrobe; while options in leather offer added insulation during colder months.

Leave The Bag At Home

In its infancy, the pocket on a safari jacket would be used to carry ammo, batteries for the GPS, a flask and likely a pipe. Though most modern men have little need for these in everyday life, it’s still possible to use the jacket as intended and leave the backpack at home.

5 Key Safari Jackets

Private white v.c..

Known for its robust outerwear, British brand Private White V.C. specialises in stylish yet functional designs. This prime example is a minimalistic take on the safari jacket. Gone are the shoulder epaulettes and belt; replaced by pared-down pockets with discrete poppers, a shorter length and a hidden placket, giving it a smarter overall feel.

Private White V.C. THE DESERT JACKET

Anderson & Sheppard

Given that it occupies a space on Savile Row , Anderson & Sheppard is best known for its exemplary tailoring. However, the heritage firm also produces a fine take on the safari jacket. Made from military-esque cotton drill and coming with 15 pockets as standard – including two iPad-sized interior pockets – it’s perhaps the handiest garment you could own. Forget luggage, just get yourself one of these.

Anderson & Sheppard HEAVY DRILL COTTON TRAVEL JACKET

Saint Laurent

Sure, because of its butter-soft lambskin construction and silk lining, the all-leather ‘Saharienne’ jacket by Saint Laurent would be useless in an actual safari – but just look at it. An ultra luxurious take on the design Yves himself backed in the 1960s, this is the French label at its best: classic, louche and incredibly desirable.

Saint Laurent SAHARIENNE JACKET IN BLACK LEATHER

Marks & Spencer

Trust Marks & Spencer to come up with a safari jacket that both ticks all the design boxes and doesn’t offend your wallet. The British high street retailer has put its own spin on the classic piece, choosing to forgo the belt and instead add a couple of buttoned rear vents. So, whether you mount a horse in the desert or a motorcycle in the city, your jacket won’t scrunch up when you sit down.

M&S 4 Pocket Jacket with Stormwear

Sitting somewhere in between Barbour’s signature waxed outerwear and the British brand’s motorcycle styles, this four pocket cotton design is an ideal modern update on the safari jacket. The drawstring waist provides a customisable fit, while a zip-and-button closure, coupled with a buttoned throat latch ensure that when the weather turns sour, it’ll be a useful ally.

The History Of The Safari Jacket

Picture the late 19th-century British soldiers of the Boer War, tramping across the plains of South Africa, unable to find their enemy – engaged as they were in this new, ungentlemanly form of warfare known as ‘guerilla’. Of course, it didn’t help that the British soldiers wore tunics in red, and the Afrikaners – appreciating the advantage of blending into the landscape – wore khaki.

Officers in British high command thought they were on to something – and shortly after came the first British military dress to make a step towards the palette of beiges, dun browns, and olive drabs still used today. The resulting attire – a four-pocket field jacket in khaki – would by turns be adopted by hunters, who likewise needed to be less visible to their prey.

military officers wearing a safari jacket

Indeed, the so-called safari jacket was born, and it would remain a specialist item – worn by hunters and trackers including diehard-killers-of-anything-that-moved Ernest Hemingway and Teddy Roosevelt. Although versions of the safari jacket were re-adopted for both the British and German forces fighting in Africa during World War Two, it was typically only worn on safari and would have looked mightily out of place anywhere else up until the mid-1950s.

This was an idea underscored by Hollywood. From the 1930s, the film machine decided the perceived exoticism of the Great Continent was ripe for the next spate of romantic, action-packed movies, with the likes of Clark Gable donning safari jackets on screen. Out came The Road to Zanzibar (1941), Mogambo (1953), Safari (1956), Hatari! (1962), onwards to the likes of Clint Eastwood in White Hunter Black Heart (1990) – by which time the safari jacket had arguably lapsed into ‘central casting’ territory.

Clark Gable wearing a safari jacket

But not before making its forays into fashion. In the movies – especially during that busy run of the 1960s – the safari jacket was typically worn with plenty of dust and sweat, perhaps a rakish neckerchief, baggy shorts, and maybe a pith helmet. Take away the perspiration, however, and the safari jacket was recognized for its practicality for city life.

In India – inspired by the climate again – it became the local answer to the business suit. This was in part why Roger Moore wore a safari jacket in Octopussy (1983), partly set as it is in India. But then Moore, as James Bond, also wore one for the scenes of the private island of The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979).

But then Moore, or his wardrobe team, was ahead of the times: he wore a safari jacket in ‘The Saint’. This wasn’t just before Bond, it was before the other Saint too. It was the designers Ted Lapidus and Yves Saint Laurent who really gave the safari jacket a fashion overhaul.

Yves Saint Laurent wearing a safari jacket

The former introduced his take on the jacket in the mid-1960s, while the latter seemingly stole all the glory – or just got the timing right – after first showing his take on it in 1967, though it was a one-off made for a Vogue story on him the following year that made it a cult item for the times. And it’s never looked back since.
