While compact and lightweight, the Bee5 feels sturdy and well-constructed. It's not the lightest in this category, but it's still light enough for you to easily pick up and take up and down the subway stairs if necessary or load onto a metro bus. In terms of space when folded, it's a bit larger than other small strollers like the YoYo, but definitely not as cumbersome as some full-sized options.

If you're new to Bugaboo strollers, it takes a few times of folding and unfolding to get the hang of it, but once you do it's fairly simple and not too physically daunting. It conveniently folds in one piece though, you don't have to remove any seat attachments for it to break down.

In terms of adjustability, you can recline the seat to one of three positions (upright, inclined or flat) and the handle can be adjusted to accommodate different heights.

A luxury stroller with a luxury price tag, the Bugaboo Bee 5 is a great option for those who want a super nice stroller that's– size-wise– about half way in between a luxury travel stroller like the Babyzen YOYO+ and a full-sized stroller like the UPPAbaby Vista or Cybex Priam Lux . The Bee 5 accommodates a gorgeous bassinet, has a nice deep recline, great suspension, comfortable padding, and is one of the lighter and smaller-folding among the standard strollers we prefer. On the downside, it does not have an adjustable footrest and the storage basket is somewhat difficult to access from the back.

Note: In general, we don't love standard strollers because they are expensive for what they are. If you want to go big, go with a  full-sized stroller . If you want to go small, go with a travel stroller . If luxury is what you're after, for about $200 more you can get the gorgeous full-sized Cybex Priam Lux , our favorite luxury stroller . For about a hundred dollars less, you can get the super compact Babyzen YOYO+ or the full-sized UPPAbaby Vista , which converts to a double stroller should your family grow in the future.

Things We Love

• Luxury Look: The Bugaboo Bee can be customized to create dozens of different color combinations, the vast majority of which look very modern and super luxe.
• Medium Weight: Weighing in at 19.6lbs, the Bee 5 is about 5-10 pounds lighter than full-sized strollers and about 5-7 pounds heavier than travel strollers . This is one of the lightest standard strollers on the market.
• Easy, Pretty Compact Fold: The Bee 5 has a smaller fold than most standard strollers, and is therefore a good option for those who want something more robust than a travel stroller but don't have a ton of space. The fold itself is simple and is accomplished in one easy step.
• Nice Bassinet or Newborn Cocoon, Sold Separately: The Bugaboo Bee 5 can be fitted with a gorgeous bassinet, sold separately for $230-$270, depending on the color you choose. ( Bassinet fabric and base sold separately.) Alternatively, you can get the Newborn Cocoon , which integrates with the lay flat toddler seat to create a cozy space for tiny ones.
• Deep, Near Flat Recline: The Bee 5 reclines to a nearly flat position.
• Modular: The Bee 5 seat easily pops off and flips around to be parent-facing or forward-facing.
• Solid Suspension; Smallish Wheels: The Bee 5 has four 6 inch wheels (the smallest wheels among strollers we like in the standard stroller category) and all wheel suspension. Designed for city streets, the Bee5 can handle a bit of bump, but performs best on paved surfaces.
• Cool Harness Feature: T hanks to an interior memory foam, the harness straps stay out of the way while you place baby in the seat.
• Well Padded: The Bee 5 is a luxury stroller with luxury features, and the padding is no exception. This makes for a super comfy seat for baby.
• Compatible with the Best Car Seats: The Bee5 is compatible with Britax , Chicco, Cybex , Maxi Cosi , and Nuna car seats with adapters sold separately.

Things We Don't Love As Much

• Expensive: A luxury stroller with a luxury price tag. Make sure this ~$1000 purchase is exactly what you want before you pull the trigger.
• Smaller Seat:  Although Bugaboo touts its height-adjustable backrest, extending from 19.5 inches to 22.25 inches, the seat itself is still one of the smaller and shorter seat backs on the market.
• No Adjustable Footrest:  The Bee 5 does not have an adjustable footrest.
• Large Basket; Difficult to Access from Back: The storage basket on the Bee 5 is large. However, while the basket is easy enough to access from the front, it is very difficult to access from the back, due to the stroller’s crossbar.
• Not Convertible to a Double Stroller: The Bee 5 is a single strollers and does not convert to a double stroller. It does, however, accommodate a wheeled board for older children.
• Annoying Five-Point Buckle: The five-point harness requires you to buckle the shoulder straps and hip straps separately, meaning you have to buckle four things instead of two each time you buckle your child into the seat.
• Some Not All Accessories Included: The Bee 5 comes with a rain cover. However, all other accessories, including the bassinet, car seat adapters, cup holder, and more are sold separately. The Bee5 does not have a bumper bar.

Our verdict.

Around since 2007, it's one of the best selling city strollers on the market worldwide. Fans of the previous model, the Bugaboo Bee3, will be knocked off their feet by the improvements and changes made to the Bee5. Equally, if you weren't sold by the previous model, then read on because we know you won't be disappointed. And if you like to stamp your own style, there are 790 different fabric, chassis and hood combinations for the Bugaboo Bee5! 

The Bee5 arrives in a neat box and is cleverly packed (very environmentally friendly - we like this a lot!). It does take a bit of building, but to be honest, as pram lovers, the building was a pleasure and it gave us chance to get to know every nook and cranny of the new Bee5 stroller. Putting on the vegan leather handlebar covers can be a little fiddly, but the end result is well worth it.

The iconic chassis shape of the Bee stroller remains for the Bee5, but you will notice the odd attachment point here and there. These attachments are a genius addition to the Bee chassis and mean that parents can pop their accessories securely onto the Bee5 frame without the need to purchase separate adaptors. Putting on the cup holder, parasol and ride on board was so easy - it took the hassle out of the little jobs that can really agitate us at times when we are having ‘one of those' parenting days!

The chassis is feather light but exceedingly strong, standing behind the handlebar it feels super sturdy, with not a wobble or flex in sight. The handlebar of the Bee5 adjusts to several different heights using clearly visible white adjuster clips on either side of the stroller frame. Just open them up and adjust the handle to your preferred height. Here at PX HQ, we love how simple and fuss-free the adjustment is.

You may assume that the Bee stroller wheels are small and perhaps a little fragile, but this is certainly not the case at all when it comes to the Bee5. The nippy wheels are in fact chunky and although they won't cope with off-roading, they will certainly last the test of time and felt superbly smooth to push. We love the addition of interchangeable wheel hubs that Bugaboo have added to the Bee5 stroller. You have the choice of a deep wine red or white. So you can style your pushchair just the way you like it! The wheel caps clip on and off with ease, so for those of you that like to accessorise your pushchair regularly, they are easy to swap and change to suit your mood or style. We'd love to just see more colour options! We are convinced that this model of the Bee stroller has a push far superior to its previous model. The wheels have been totally redesigned and they really do seem to absorb even the bumpiest of pot holes on the city streets! The tyres on the wheels are definitely chunkier than on previous Bee models.

The rear wheelbase is still just as narrow as previous models of the Bee to allow for nipping in and out of aisles and on and off public transport really easy. We had no problems in popping the Bee5 up and down curbs with our 2 year old tester in-situ! The brake on the Bee5 has also been cleverly designed with busy parents in mind. The broad and clearly visible white brake lever is simple to operate. Just flip it on and off with your foot. We have used the brake on hills, pavements and platforms - every time it felt safe and secure. Admittedly, It was a little bit tricky to reach when the ride on board was attached to the frame.

The basket on the Bee5 is more spacious than you may think. The access is from the front due to the plastic framework of the fold mechanism (something that may take some getting used to at first), but we were able to fit quite a lot into the undercarriage of the Bee5; including coats, school bags, a lunch box, nappies, wipes and drinks bottles! What we do love about the basket of the Bee5 is that you can lift the base of the seat up when baby is not seated, to gain even better access to the basket. There is a great separate storage compartment integrated into the front of the basket, which we found great for keeping smaller objects that we needed to get our hands on quickly. The raincover fitted into this compartment perfectly too, so did not take up valuable space in the basket either.

The seat of the Bee5 is what impressed us the most after using it for a little while. Having had experience of the previous model, the Bee3, seat unit, we wrongly assumed the Bee5 seat would be the same. It is totally different, the whole composition of the seat is different, from the shell to the harness! One of the most noticeable features of the Bee5 was the padded seat unit. The foam padding sits neatly underneath whichever coloured seat fabric you choose (there is a choice of 15 brand new colours and materials to choose from!). Our tester certainly seemed to enjoy the ride and never once complained of being uncomfortable. In fact, he was constantly climbing into the stroller of his own accord and asking to be pushed around! There is also the added bonus of being able to adjust the height and depth of the seat unit as your little one grows - something we rarely see! 

The other niggle that we know many parents have experienced with the Bee is the fact that their babies seemed to be slumped in the seat. Not once did this occur throughout the time we tested the Bee5 and we are convinced this is down to the newly designed seat and harness system. We LOVE the harness on the Bee5! The genius addition of a stay-open harness to this stroller is a definite parent pleaser. Popping baby and toddler in and out of the seat unit was quick and easy. The stylish but practical round clasp was simple to buckle up and sat in a perfect and comfortable position on baby's body when fastened. We loved how the harness adjusted – by just tweaking the cords, the harness could be altered to fit any baby perfectly. 

The seat unit can be parent or world facing but admittedly, there is an art to removing it off the chassis and turning it around. The recline lever is situated towards the top of the seat unit. Just squeeze the large white button whilst popping your thumb on the moulded ledge on the back of the seat unit and you can adjust the seat to a position comfortable for baby. The seat does lay totally flat, so is suitable for newborns, but what we loved most is the fact it also sits bolt upright - something that parents of nosy toddlers will really appreciate! What our little tester did miss, was the ability to lean against the sides of the seat unit. The seat is very open and at times when he felt like snuggling in, it was a bit harder than in other strollers with deeper seat sides. 

The hood on the Bee5 certainly gave our tester good coverage. We experienced some lovely spring sunshine whilst testing out the stroller and we unzipped the extendable panel of the hood to really shade and protect our toddler whilst he was strolling and sleeping. One thing that we really would love to see is the addition of a peek-a-boo window. Such a simple little feature but so valuable when you want to check on baby without disturbing them!

As an urban stroller, you do expect the Bee5 to be compact – and compact it was! It folds unlike any pushchair we have used before, but once you have got the knack, it's also one of the quickest folds we have experienced too. It doesn't matter which direction your seat unit is facing in, you can fold the Bee5 any which way! All you need to do is line the seat unit up with either side of the pushchair frame and then you will notice two white levers on either side of the frame. Press these buttons in and slide the handle down (like a telescopic fold). The whole pushchair folds up into itself and the seat tucks inside the frame nicely so doesn't get mucky! It makes a great one piece fold to use in the car or on public transport. It's really light and easy to carry too. We found it really handy that we were able to push the Bee5 to the side of the car boot so we had plenty of space for shopping, dogs or other general luggage when we were off on a day out!

We have certainly been impressed by the upgrades made to the Bugaboo Bee5. The extra padding in the seat unit and stay open harness are fab additions to this already popular stroller and they made the ride extremely comfortable and enjoyable for our tester. Although the open and airy seat might not be to everyone's liking, the Bee5 definitely rates highly in the fold stakes with its ability to be folded with the seat unit on the chassis in either parent or world facing modes. And even though we wouldn't personally rate it as a luxury pushchair, it is certainly practical for city living. The new colours and fabrics are beautiful and allow parents to style their pushchair to suit their taste and their baby's personality. The newly designed wheels have been built to stand the test of time and really made a difference to the strolling experience for both parent and child.

Setup process.

It’s essential to let you know that the manufacturers’ manual is explained in pictorial form. However, the setup process is not complicated if you can follow the pictures keenly. It will take you just a few minutes to assemble your stroller and start using it.

In the box, there are canopy wires, the chassis, the front, rear wheels, the set, the frame.

• Assemble the chassis by pushing down the button in the middle.
• Fix the wheel caps into your front and rear wheels by lining up the bike’s holes and the holes on the cap.
• Connect the wheel into the frame.
• Connect the seat into the frame
• Place the fabric on the seat and ensure you get all the shoulder straps out of the seat unit fabric.
• To attach the sun canopy, fix the canopy wires into the canopy fabric, and place the hook on the canopy wires.
• Fix the handlebar leather fabric; ensure you button until you hear a click.

Age range: From birth up to 36 months

Bugaboo Bee5 is suitable for your baby from birth to toddlerhood. To make it ideal from newborn, you will need to use a carrycot that is sold separately. The maximum weight for the child in the carrycot is 9kg. The carrycot is only suitable for children who cannot sit up without help.

When using the stroller for the infant, always ensures that the canopy is fully reclined. The canopy will offer your baby a critical containment to ensure that your child is held firmly.

Bee 5 seat is suitable for children from zero to thirty-six months that is approximately up to babies weighing 17kgs.

It has a cup holder and a sizable under-seat basket, which holds all your essential requirements. On the storage basket, there is a small extra pocket to help you stay organized. The storage basket is designed to fit a large diaper pack with a weight limit of up to 8.8 lbs.

The seat unit reclines smoothly to an infinite position, which is almost flat; this will help your child take a nap comfortably. The footrest is well padded to ensure the comfort of your little one. It is large enough to accommodate toddlers in their early stages. The adjustable backrest allows your child to grow in this stroller.

The canopy is two stages with an opening that covers from above, and it can zip to extend the awning to include your child from head to toe, protecting them from direct wind. The sunshade has a peek-a-boo window to allow you to check on your child while strolling.

The 5-point adjustable harness has a quick-release button, which makes adjustments easy. To adjust the harness height, press the release button to your preferred height.

Bugaboo bee5 has an all-wheel suspension with lockable front wheels to give your baby a smooth ride in rough terrains. The lockable front tires help in increasing maneuverability on the busy streets. The front wheels are made to provide extra stability as well as swivel maneuverability. The four wheels’ independent suspension offers a damping mechanism to offer additional shock absorption for your little one.

The handlebar has ten adjusting positions from 90 cm to 108 cm, making the stroller ideal for parents of different heights. Those parents with back problems can adjust the handlebar also so that they do not bend as they steer. The handlebar is shaped and designed in a way that makes it easy to steer one-handed. It is also covered with a leather-like fabric, which helps in increasing the foam.

The chassis is curved, which means that only a few parts need to fold. This gives it extra strength and durability. The bee 5 is made using a heavy-duty stroller frame, making it suitable for urban setup and more challenging terrain.

The seat is 50 cm from the ground, which is a few centimeters low compared to the Bugaboo Cameleon. However, this is a proper height for parents to interact with the child and check on them.

It comes with a hood with two panels, and a third panel zippered to virtually cover your baby completely. The hood is made using a soft material and a wireframe, which ensures no noise when opening and closing when the little one is sleeping. Clean the chassis with lukewarm water and a soft towel to wipe out all the trash. The Bugaboo Bee 5 is the fourth generation of a very popular light stroller new for 2017. The Bee 4 evokes the word “before” and that´s why this name was not used. The high-end Bee 5 is the most compact Bugaboo stroller when folded. It is therefore a luxury alternative to an umbrella stroller. Integrated attachment points were added to the chassis of the stroller, it is therefore very simple to snap on an umbrella, a beverage holder or a sibling board. The indication whether the chassis is properly assembled are now laser engraved symbols replacing the painted markings used in previous models. When shopping, you will appreciate a spacious shopping basket. It also has a separate pocket for a rain cover. Thanks to improved wheels with softer suspension, the ride will be even more comfortable. The problem of clogging of the wheels of the previous version was solved by a new, simpler cleaning system.

The reversible seat is located lower. The seat has no leg rest, but it is rather deep. The two layers of padding make the seat even more comfortable. The seat textiles will no longer fit onto the previous versions. For a more fancy look, the Bee 5 has a hidden harness fastening and a logo on the rear of the backrest. Similar to the popular Bugaboo Cameleon , the Bee 5 can be customized by changing the hoods. You can choose the hood design from the basic Core collection, the higher Premium collection or the luxurious patterned Signature collection. Summer variations with ventilation are also available. The new generation offers even greater possibility of customization with wheel caps and leatherette handles in new colors. A new feature of 2019 is a stand-alone position in the folded state, possible thanks to the added pull-out foot.

The Bee 5 is suitable from birth thanks to the full recline. For added comfort a Baby Cocoon is also available. You can also attach a car seat or a carrycot to the chassis. The carrycot will use the hood from the seat.

You can put the Bee 5 together individually, or you can buy a complete All In One Box set. It was also released in limited editions Tone and Niark1. Since November 2017, the tiger-patterned We Are Handsome designer collection is also available.

The Bee5 was a beautiful and soft stroller, but we didn't use it much unfortunately. I find it unusable for toddlers under 2 years. It lacks a footrest, the baby is uncomfortable to sit in, my older daughter was also missing a footrest - she didn't want to sleep in it. The basket is terribly small - and overall the wheels were quite troublesome in the snow or on our broken sidewalks...

It didn't fit our lifestyle at all - I owned it for two weeks and had to sell it afterwards.

Fisrt, I really minded the plastic seat. When the pushchair is empty and you push it, it clacks and is so noisy that I was ashamed to push it. When the child's inside, it's okay, but my little one wants to walk quite often, I cannot hold her inside all the time.

Next, the size&weight versus the wheel size. The wheels are SOOO tiny, which I could accept, but if this should be a travel stroller, I feel it is way too long after folding, and heavy - and it doesn't stand by itself, even... So not the best for traveling.

I must praise the height adjustability of the backrest - a nice feature, even if, funnily, that is probably the reason of the noisy empty seat. I like that you can swap the canopies and the changing of the handle covers or fabric sets. Even the suspension is nice, but I sometimes couldn't care less with all the noisy ride 🙈

I also minded the missing legrest, mainly when the child faces the parent - there's no place to put her feet on. The biggest plus is, on the other hand, a very good center of gravity - the buggy was stable and easy to steer in both directions of the seat.

The Bugaboo Bee5 made the Shortlist for Best Pushchair in the M&B Awards 2018. But, how has this pushchair been rated across various different websites? Unfortunately, this is hard to tell due to the product being discontinued. However, there's still the odd review across the Bugaboo website.

Bugaboo: 5 out of 5 stars. One reviewer said, "Love this stroller. I bought the bugaboo bee when my son was born 9 years ago, and loved it then. Bought the bee 5 for my grandson and my daughter absolutely adores it. It’s smooth to push and the suspension is great. Navigating the city and London transport is no fuss as it is small and versatile. Superb buy."

The original price of the Bugaboo Bee5 on Bugaboo retailed from £649. With the product being discontinued, it's listed across sites like U-buy at differing prices. The price range seems to sit at £656 to £816 - so, a little more than Bugaboo's price.

In comparison to rival products like it, the Bugaboo Bee5 is at the high end of the price point - unlike other lightweight pushchairs with a travel system available, like the Ickle Bubba Stomp V3 Travel System which has a price range of £499.99 to £649.99.

Mother & Baby's Online Editor, Maria Martin , said: "The four-wheel suspension makes this a pleasant ride for my 1-year-old son, who even takes naps in the Bee5 with ease. He also falls asleep during the ride across road and country lanes, meaning the Bee5 can also withstand multiple terrain, even as a dedicated city-proof pushchair. I love how I can manoeuvre the pushchair with one hand and the handlebar is height adjustable. And as well as my son fitting snug in the Bee5, he has become one super stylish tot, thanks to the ever-so trendy, sleek looking pushchair."

Mother & Baby's Online Editor, Maria Martin, said: "The under seat basket is not easy to access and the hood at times can feel quite flimsy when extending and retracting. It would also be better if the sun canopy extended out further like, the one found on Bugaboo’s Donkey3 , over the seat to cover my tot when napping and away from the sun’s glare."

Mother & Baby Tester, Naomi, said: "I love this pushchair! My daughter is comfortable and safe. On the Chameleon , you can switch the handle between front and back, which I did miss for its space-saving qualities on the train, but that is probably a compromise to make it smaller. My only issue is that I think there are smaller and more compact options out there, but I do not know whether they have the excellent comfort and durability of a Bugaboo."

Finally, our testers helped us to weigh up the comparisons between the Bugaboo Bee5 and other competitors on the market. Here's what our testers had to say about whether the Bugaboo Bee5 stood up to rival products.

Mother & Baby Tester, Ashley, said: "I think this product would have made my life as a mummy easier when my little one was about one or two years old, as it very lightweight and has a compact fold which allows it to fit into my small boot. It is extremely easy to use and narrow enough to fit through small spaces. That said, at the moment, it does not meet our needs or make our lives easier, as we use our current pram off-road a lot and on uneven surfaces."

Mother & Baby Tester, Nicole, said: "As previously mentioned, the manoeuvrability is a strong selling point, along with the appearance and how compact the Bee5 is. However, compared to my own pram, I feel this product has a few disadvantages one being the foldability. My own pram was half the price as a travel system, and seems far simpler to collapse and open when trying to hold a baby and a changing bag. The shopping basket is also extremely difficult to access."

Mother & Baby Tester, Danielle, said: "I wouldn't choose this product over others available on the market as being at the top end of the pricing scale, I would expect the Bee5 to excel other brands in all areas and this is not the case. Although, there are some really useful features such as the extendable handlebar (this really does have a huge range of height positions that I have never seen before in another product). The chassis is not as easy to collapse as it is on other products and I wasn't able to do this one-handed which I think is important when you have an unhappy baby and need to multitask! The carrycot also isn't as sturdy as others I have tried and it is also much smaller – my son was almost too big for this at three months old."

Final thoughts

Having been Shortlisted in the M&B Awards 2018 in the Best Pushchair category, it didn't quite perform well enough to be awarded a top spot. Given the price point, some of our Mother & Baby testers expected a lot more from the Bugaboo Bee5 compared to rival pushchairs.

The Bugaboo Bee5 impressed with its lightweight frame, manoeuvrability and quality. However, most would recommend this pushchair as a city stroller for running errands around the shops as opposed to an all round pushchair that works in every situation.

Despite the fact the Bugaboo Bee5 is described as an easy-fold pushchair, the majority of our Mother & Baby testers found the process of folding the pushchair down complicated and fiddly. Therefore, while there were some that enjoyed the Bugaboo Bee5 overall, others stuck with prams they already had from rival competitors.

Currently, there are five models of the Bugaboo Bee in total, including the Bugaboo Bee, Bugaboo Bee Plus, Bugaboo Bee3, Bugaboo Bee5 and the latest model from Bugaboo, the Bugaboo Bee6.

How to fold the Bugaboo Bee 5?

Folding the Bugaboo Bee5 comes with a few steps. When front facing, you will need to: step on the mechanism on the kick bar, push the seat as far forward as it will go, fold the canopy inward, flick both of the mechanisms on the handles and compress the pram down to the floor.

When parent facing, the steps are similar. However, you will need to: fold the canopy back and push the seat as far toward the handle as it will go, flick both of the mechanisms on the handles and compress the pram down to the floor.
