It’s harmonically rich, and has some of that parlor-style punch in the midrange. It’s also extremely dynamic, projecting when you want it to, but responding nicely to softer playing. 

It’s extremely well designed. The body, neck and headstock are all separate when packed down, but it’s very quick to construct when it’s time to play. The clever locking mechanism keeps the neck in place, adding the right tension to the strings, and even retaining tuning somewhat between sessions. The Furch Little Jane even comes with its own padded backpack so you can take it on your travels right away.

4. Martin LX1E

Probably one of the most popular compact six-strings ever made, the Martin LX1E has truly earned its place on our list of the best travel guitars. It’s around a 3/4 size, with a 23” scale. Players who are already accustomed to a full size guitar might get along with this particularly well as the neck width is about the same, measuring 1 11/16” at the nut.

Solid spruce sits atop a high pressure laminate mahogany back and sides creating a balanced but fairly bright tone. There is a touch of that boxy sort of sound you often get with smaller acoustics (though nowhere near as much as some cheaper models), and there aren’t tons of low end frequencies, but that’s if we’re being picky. Overall, the projection and tone of the LX1E is excellent. 

It is available without (Martin LX1), but this is equipped with a Fishman Sonitone pickup. The controls are easily accessible and it’s very much a case of plug in and play, making it one of the best travel guitars for potentially gigging with. If you’re navigating public transport to get to shows, then this is definitely one to consider.

It stays in tune well, and the intonation is just right. It’s really compact, but it plays more like a full size guitar, so you don’t lose much of the feel you’d normally get with a bigger instrument. A travel guitar doesn’t necessarily always have to be short scale, and this is a case in point. The Ultra-Light Travel Guitar boasts a full 24.75” scale length, but the entire thing measures just 28”. They say that it’s actually 28% shorter and 68% lighter than your average electric guitar . The lap rest detaches when not in use too, making it extremely portable. 

It’s fitted with a single dual rail humbucking pickup that delivers punchy but articulate tones. It’s not the most versatile instrument in the world, but that’s not really the aim here. Still, you can probably tackle most styles of music with it. The tuning pegs are also built into the body which obviously gets rid of the necessity for a headstock, and they actually work very well too.

If you’re flying a lot, or maybe space is at a premium in the car and you want to take this and maybe a battery powered amp with you, then this makes for a fantastic travel guitar.

7. Squier Mini Jazzmaster

A 3/4 size guitar is smaller all over – smaller scale length (22.75” in this case), smaller body, neck, headstock etc. You might have to adjust your playing somewhat to accommodate these shrunken features, but most players can become accustomed to it. The short scale also lends the guitar a really nice slinky feel, so you might find yourself playing a little differently to normal, which can spark creativity. 

This fantastic looking offset is fitted with a pair of quite high output, punchy sounding humbuckers. So, if you’re seeking a portable guitar for rocking big riffs and ripping solos, then this is absolutely one to consider. 

It’s also well priced. Maybe you’re just seeking a guitar to take out occasionally, enabling you to leave your main instrument at home. This is of a good enough standard to do the job well, and it means that you’re not having to throw your more expensive guitar in the back of a car or van etc.

8. Traveler Travelcaster Deluxe

This effectively cuts the body of a Strat down to just its scratchplate, reducing its size dramatically. The 6-in-line is then reduced to 3+3 making a further size reduction. All in all, it’s about the size of a regular Strat, minus the headstock, making it altogether a lot more portable. 

You’re not having to sacrifice anything in terms of tone here. The Travelcaster has three single-coil pickups and a five-way selector, giving you all the chimey, glassy tones that you’d expect from this kind of configuration. The tremolo works nicely too – again, something you don’t have to sacrifice. 

What’s particularly great about this model is that it has the full 25.5” Strat scale length meaning that your fretting hand won’t have a clue it’s playing on a travel guitar. Chords, scales and licks will feel as they do on a full size guitar, though you might just have to slightly accommodate for a different neck profile.

When we’re talking about the best travel guitars, we’re looking for instruments that are physically easier to travel with. Size and weight play a huge part, so the above choices will all be smaller than your regular full-size guitar, which in turn, will make them lighter. 

Some might just have slightly reduced dimensions when compared to a full size, making it a little more practical to take out on the go. Others might have completely different designs that render them suitable for taking on planes as hand luggage. How small you want it completely depends on your wants and needs.

Electric Or Acoustic?

Of course, one of the main considerations when shopping for the best travel guitar is whether to go electric or acoustic. Acoustics, by their very nature, tend to be a little bigger with deeper bodies, but you don’t need an amp to get the most out of it. These guitars for their distinctive shape, and high-quality construction, having been used by likes of Geddy Lee (Rush), and Sting (The Police), back in the day to more modern day artists such as Arif Miradolbaghi (Protest the Hero). They feature a headless design, and a compact size playable even on an armed office chair. The GT-Pro brings the same quality and aesthetic to a more affordable line of travel guitars.

Overall Build and Size: The original Spirit was one of the most popular attempts at making a body-less travel guitar in the 80s, and the modern Spirit GT-Pro Deluxe has some unique features to match! Featuring a full 25-½ scale length, and a tight fretboard radius, the Spirit is quite easy to handle, play and travel with. Keeping it simple with one volume and one tone knob, and including a tremolo bridge and the locking tuners make for a stable and well-tuned guitar, even without a headstock.

Overall Sound Quality: The deluxe model features a humbucker pickup on the bridge and neck, with a single coil in the middle. The twin humbuckers designed by Steinberger and perfected by Epiphone, make the Spirit sound fat and round while reducing the tinny signals to a minimum. But, with the Voyage Air VAOM-02G2, its manufacturers have found an ingenious solution to that age-old problem – a patented hinge which lets you literally fold the guitar in half! It comes with its very own deluxe Voyager case in which you can stow the guitar when not in use. For someone who doesn’t want to compromise on the dimensions or the size, this is a great fit!

Overall Build and Size: The Voyage Air is a full-sized acoustic dreadnought guitar. The body is made from mahogany as are the back and the sides and has a single-ply laminate spruce top with bracing. The fingerboard and the bridge are crafted from laurel – a soft-colored, brown wood that is almost identical to rosewood. It has a high-gloss protective finish which gives it a soft look. The foldable neck-hinge has been tested under pressure and is very dependable. The build of the guitar is quite sturdy, no matter how strange it might seem to fold and unfold the guitar each time. The only thing to keep in mind is that the strings need to be slackened off before folding!

LG's 30-inch smart slide-in gas range is feature-loaded: It has a spacious convection oven with added features like air fry, air sous vide and even a window that allows you to tap twice and see what's cooking inside without opening the door.

This range has easy-to-navigate knobs and a digital display on a slanted panel. We also like LG's "smart diagnosis" feature that transmits data via your phone directly to LG's Customer Information Center to troubleshoot without stress (this is an optional feature that you have to opt into). Though, it did take a few tries to get connected to the app during testing.

In our testing, we found that the balanced cooktop provided even heat distribution, boiled water quickly and kept water at a constant simmer. Throw in an 18,500-BTU power burner, self-clean options and a reasonable price tag, and you've got yourself a great gas range for almost any kitchen .

This Maytag gas range is the best value for what it offers. The sleek fingerprint-resistant stainless steel range replaced a similar model that performed well in Lab testing but is now discontinued. The MGR6600PZ has weighted knobs and an updated handle. The stove top features five burners including a burner in the center perfect for oversized Dutch ovens or stovetop griddles.

We feel confident recommending the newer model by Maytag given that the previous gas range produced consistent results in testing. Water stayed at a consistent simmer on the stovetop, and bread browned evenly in the oven. We appreciate that it's self-cleaning and includes a keep warm setting so your sauce won't go cold while you finish boiling your pasta. You can also take advantage of broil temperatures that go from 350°F up to 500°F. However, we do wish that the model retained the air frying capabilities of the older range.

Samsung's dual-fuel smart range combines the best of both worlds in more ways than one. In addition to having a gas cooktop and electric oven for more even baking, the oven utilizes a ceramic divider that lets you switch from a large single cavity (6.3 cu. ft.) to two smaller cavities (2.7 cu. ft. and 3.4 cu. ft.). With the faux-double oven, you can broil halibut in the top half while roasting potatoes in the lower half.

In testing, we loved this range's easy-to-use, brightly-lit control dials and panel. Like other top models with air fry, we found the frying functionality works well but tends to produce more smell and smoke than traditional baking because of the fans.

GE's smart connectivity is some of the best around, with the brand's SmartHQ Wi-Fi-based app allowing for remote control, monitoring and diagnostics while being compatible with Alexa and Google Home (and ChefConnect, which can pair a range with a compatible hood or microwave). This sleek range pairs these smart features with a true convection oven and burners with a variety of outputs, whether you need to boil water on the 21,000 BTU Tri-ring burner or simmer a delicate sauce on the 5,000 BTU 'precise simmer' burner.

In testing, the stovetop received high scores for its very even heat distribution, in addition to its speedy water boiling time. It also had even oven heat distribution and broiled up a nicely browned steak. We also found this model had great ease of use, with the only thing that didn't give it a perfect score was that it needed some extra care in cleaning the stovetop.

If you're looking for a sleek, professional-style range with great performance, the Viking 36-inch Freestanding Dual Fuel Range is a quality option. This model comes in two configurations: the VDR5366B with six burners and the VDR5364G with four burners and a griddle top in the middle. We tested the six-burner model ranging from 12,500 to 18,500 BTUs , so it has the power to take you where you need to go. We found that even at a lower BTU, water came to a boil very quickly and kept a pretty consistent simmer over time. It also comes in 16 different colors so you can customize it to fit the look of your kitchen.

In our testing, we found that the self-cleaning function worked well, and it only needed light scrubbing and a wipe after the cycle finished. The grates fit over the individual burners, so the range is easy to clean too. The knobs are brightly lit and are labeled in a contrasting color, so they're very easy to read. However, there’s no audible cue to indicate when the oven is done preheating, though there is a blue light that turns on. There's also no digital interface, so if you’re looking for something with more smart-feature bells and whistles, this might not be the range for you.

We love the Dacor 36-inch Smart Dual Fuel Range's easy-to-use control panel and intuitive interface, large knobs that are easy to grab and three roll-out racks in the oven. We think it has a beautiful design that is very sleek and low to the ground, with brass covers for the burners. It has six burners ranging from 16,000 to 22,000 BTUs, so it also packs some serious power.

We tested an older version of this model that excelled at our oven heat distribution tests , evenly toasting bread on bake and broil settings. When testing the steam function, our salmon skin got nice and crispy while remaining very moist. We did find that while the self-clean function was not very noisy or smelly, it didn't clean as well as we had hoped and there are a lot of small crevices and grooves that make it tricky to clean.

Air fryers have gained a lot of popularity — and probably some of your counter space. Take some of that space back with this new Frigidaire gas range with no preheat air fry capabilities. While we haven't tested this model yet, we have tested the recently discontinued FGGH3047VF model which performed well crisping up chicken wings deliciously.

This range's easy-to-read touchscreen control panel features numerous settings besides just air fry: slow cook, convection bake, steam bake, convection roast, steam roast, air sous vide, bread proof, dehydrate and more. And on the stovetop it features five traditional burners; one being a powerful quick boil burner perfect for boiling pasta water and a center oval burner with an integrated cast iron griddle for cooking up pancakes. Take note that you do have to purchase the air fryer basket separately.

How we test the best gas ranges

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab our product analysts have tested almost 100 ranges in recent years, including more than 50 gas and dual fuel models.

We've also interviewed many industry experts and gotten a behind-the-scenes look at numerous kitchen appliance showrooms over the past couple of decades. The models on this list were picked based on testing of current models and previous testing of discontinued models from high-performing brands.

Our analysts are always testing new ranges in the Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab which can hold up to six models at a time. We also send models to consumer's homes for longterm real-life testing.

When we test side-by-side in the Lab, we perform the same test on all models at once to see how they compare and use a rigorous testing criteria to evaluate each model's performance and ease of use.

When testing stovetops, we test burners to see how quickly they can reach a boil and if they maintain a steady simmer over a set period of time, checking the temperature of the range’s surfaces as we go. To test the heat distribution of the burners, we coat a skillet in flour and put it on the heat, watching to see how evenly it browns (pictured here).

We run another series of tests on the ovens, toasting bread on a cookie sheet to determine where any hot spots are in the oven. We also test real-life situations by baking cookies (pictured) and cakes on bake and convection bake settings to test for evenness and doneness in different sectors of the oven, measuring how evenly the cakes rise.

The broiler function gets another toast test to check for hot spots, and we broil a steak to see how it browns up (or not). If there’s an air-fry feature we test it by making chicken wings, and if there’s a steam cook function, we cook salmon and check how the skin crisps up and if it dries out the fish.

We finish off the entire testing process with oven cleaning. We cover the interior of the oven with a mixture of household ingredients, bake it on and then run the self-cleaning cycle to see how well it pulls off all of the gunk.

As we go along, we also note the ease of use of the controls, handles, knobs, racks and more. Using a thermal gun, we take the temperature of touch points — like knobs and handles — while the oven and stovetop are running to ensure they remain safe to handle.

What to look for when shopping for a gas range

✔️ Type of fuel: While most of the time your choice of fuel is dictated by what kind of fuel line is available in your house or building, if you have access to gas you can choose between a traditional gas range or a dual-fuel range. A traditional gas range uses gas to fuel both the cooktop and oven, while dual-fuel uses gas to fuel the cooktop and electricity to fuel the oven, though it does require a higher-volt power supply source. If you are able to install a dual-fuel range you will get the best of both worlds, a quick and powerful cooktop and an oven that bakes evenly.

✔️ Size: There are a variety of different range sizes to choose from. Most ranges vary from 30 inches wide to 60 inches wide. The larger the range, the more space there is for additional burners. The capacity of most household ovens varies from 4.5 cubic feet to 6.6 cubic feet. Any oven over the size of 6 cubic feet is considered a large-capacity oven and is great if you need to cook large quantities.

✔️ Burners: Most gas cooktops have between four and six burners, with five being the most common. While the number of burners is important, you should also consider the layout of the burners on the cooktop. Five cramped burners are no more useful than four well-spaced ones.

• Size: The size of burners varies from small to extra large and quite often correlates with their BTUs. If a burner is a lot smaller than the pan sitting on top, the heat won't distribute as evenly. Look for at least one large burner in the front that will be able to hold a sauté pan or a large Dutch oven.
• Power (BTUs): The power of each gas burner is measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units which is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit. Some range cooktops offer a variety of different burner BTUs, while others share similar BTUs. You’ll want to look for a gas cooktop with a good variety of burners — so you can do everything from quick boils to gentle simmers — and a high average BTU. One 20,000-BTU power burner for boiling water is great, but it’s best to have a couple of burners above 12,000 BTUs.

✔️ Grates: Gas cooktop grates come in a variety of styles, but the most important thing to look for is that the grates are continuous, meaning they cover the surface of the cooktop end-to-end to prevent gapping, tipping and shifting of pots and pans. You also want elevated grates that can be easily lifted to clean up messes. Most grates are cast iron, which is heavy and durable but harder to clean and risks scratching your cookware. Some grates are enameled cast iron, which is easier to clean but risks chipping.

✔️ Oven settings: Newer gas ranges offer more oven settings than ranges of the past. Newer settings range from air fry to convection to steam cook. While these settings will help you unlock new cooking techniques, they are not completely necessary to get great use of your oven. Air fry settings use convection fans to circulate air rapidly to achieve crispy ingredients. Convection circulates air less rapidly than air fry for quicker and more even browning on delicate bakes like cake or cookies. Steam cook incorporates moisture, requiring less oil in your baking, and it's great for delicate ingredients that are prone to drying out in the oven like broccoli or salmon.

✔️ Self-clean: Most ovens feature a self-cleaning option , which traditionally uses extremely high heat to remove the grime. Newer models feature a steam clean option to loosen dirt and baked-on messes. Steam cleaning is a much quicker process since it doesn't require as much heat and allows for a quicker cool-down time. But while it's quicker, it may not be as effective as the traditional high-heat self-cleaning method — and ultimately requires more elbow grease.

Are gas ranges safe?

Recent conversations around the possibility of federal consumer safety regulators introducing new rules for oven and stove manufacturers might have you concerned about whether a gas range can cause poor air quality or lead to respiratory issues. While burning gas certainly affects indoor air pollution , g as ovens aren't likely to be the sole reason that you develop a respiratory issue , and our experts say there are ways to mitigate risks.

Exhaust hoods, or range hoods, can help dissipate nitrogen dioxide build-up in addition to smoke, odors and grease. You can also open windows to better assist range hoods that don't vent directly outdoors. For me, the Eternal City is eternally fabulous. No matter how crowded it gets, how dysfunctional its current government is, or how many bad pizzas there are in ratio to good ones, Rome remains. It’s persisted and resisted for more than 2,775 years, and even at this ripe old age, Rome is still evolving. 

It’s an exciting time to visit Rome, and even for people who live there, the flurry of post-pandemic activity in the travel sector has been dizzying. “Archaeological sites that have been fenced-off for years are now accessible to visitors, there’s a host of innovative new tour options, and I can barely keep up with the number of absolutely stunning luxury hotels that have opened ,” says Travel + Leisure contributor and Rome resident Laura Itzkowitz, who also writes about Rome in her newsletter, The New Roman Times . “It’s a delight to see so much investment in the city and so many new ways to experience it.” 

No matter how you decide to see the city or whether your tastes swing towards art and architecture, high-end shopping and dining, or browsing markets and munching on street food, Rome gives you options. • Swoon over the cityscape. Few things are as romantic as Rome at night from a vantage point like the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola or the Capitoline Hill.
• See marble turn to flesh. At the Galleria Borghese, Bernini’s lifelike sculptures are a gazillion times more impressive than what you remember from art history class. 
• Do the Full Monty of Italian dining. Bring your appetite and go big, with antipasto, pasta, main course, and dessert at a homey trat like Da Enzo da 29.  
• Get up early. At least once during your stay, request an early wake-up call to discover a deserted city. ArcheoRoma can lead the way.

T+L readers’ favorite hotel in Rome is also a hit with Portuesi, who raves about its “with its unique and secluded Mediterranean tiered secret garden walking distance from the Spanish Steps, Fontana di Trevi and Piazza del Popolo.” The hotel’s Stravinskij Bar remains one of Rome’s most elegant locales for a cocktail.

For a real sense of how Rome’s history is layered like a lasagna, head to this church near the Colosseum — or rather, underneath it. An atmospheric archaeological area beneath the not-too-shabby 12th-century church holds an even earlier Christian church, which lies on top of a pagan altar and an ancient Roman apartment building.

Spend a late afternoon vintage shopping on my favorite street in Rome , then stick around for an aperitivo, followed by pizza and gelato. If that trifecta of Roman drinking and eating isn’t enough, this splendid street near Piazza Navona has a buzzy but manageable bar-hopping scene. 

Largo Argentina

Want to stand at the very site (or very near it, anyway) where Julius Caesar lost his life? Long visible only from street level and best known as a cat sanctuary among picturesque ruins, the archaeological area at Largo Argentina site is now open to the public, thanks to funding from Bulgari . The Curia of Pompeo, where Caesar got shivved, stands near the ruins of four ancient temples.

Galleria Borghese

Reserve your tickets in advance and prepare to be overwhelmed by the beauty here, both of the ornate salons of this noble palace turned art museum, and the amazing works inside, including Bernini’s spellbinding "Rape of Proserpine" and several Caravaggio paintings.

Testaccio Market

This sprawling covered market in the working-class Testaccio neighborhood offers an authentic slice of Roman daily life. Even if you’re not shopping for clothing, produce or fresh fish, stop for some of Rome’s best street food, especially a suppli at Food Box or a drippy panino at Modri e Vai. 

Itzkowitz is a fan of this artisan jeweler in Monti and even had owner Antonio design a pair of custom earrings for her wedding. If you don’t have time for a made-to-order bauble, the shop has many original designs, many of which feature colorful gemstones.

Essenzialmente Laura

For a real only-in-Rome gift or souvenir, Portuesi refers friends and clients to the perfumery of Laura Bosetti Tonatto, who’s made custom scents for celebrities, royals, and aristocrats, including Queen Elizabeth II. “You can create your own perfect perfume or find the scent you love,” he says. 

La Bottega del Marmoraro

It’s hard to imagine a store like this anywhere else — a tiny workshop on pretty Via Margutta where stone carver Sandro Fiorentino tinks away at marble plaques by hand. “I love to bring out-of-town visitors here,” says Itzkowitz. “Prices start at around 15 euros, which means you can find an affordable, handmade souvenir.”

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola

Some of the best things in Rome are free, including the views from this monumental fountain high on the Janiculum hill. It’s one of T+L’s top underrated things to do in Rome . Fans of the Oscar-winning film “Rome, the Great Beauty” will recognize this majestic spot.

This classy bar offers great cocktails and light bites with a sublime view. “A table there in the stunning Piazza di Pietra,” says Bono, “with the incredible Roman columns all lit up is truly magical, and it feels like it's just there for you."

The recipe for an unforgettable Roman evening: Start with panoramic city views from atop the Spanish Steps, stir in a specialty cocktail, garnish with some elevated aperitivo fare, and drink it all in at one of our favorite family-run hotels in Italy and one of the absolute best in Rome.

Da Enzo da 29

Despite its near-legendary status and the long lines for a table (Enzo doesn’t take reservations), Itzkowitz says a meal here is “worth the wait and lives up to the hype — every time.” She’s a fan of the handmade tonarelli cacio e pepe but says that the food here is consistently good across the menu. 

Trattoria Da Cesare Al Pellegrino

This new-in-2023 sister property of a neighborhood favorite in residential Monteverde brings hearty, traditional Roman pasta and meat dishes to the centro storico. “Run, don't walk,” says Bono, “because this city location is super charming, and tourists haven't found it yet.”

Pro Loco Pinciano

Portuesi says you’ll feel like a local at this super-casual pizza and pasta joint just outside the city walls, where the emphasis is on ingredients and wines sourced from the surrounding region on Lazio. Charcuterie platters are delicious and abundant here. 

L'Antica Pesa

Regularly named one of the best restaurants in Rome, this Trastevere culinary landmark is, per Portuesi, “a standard and consistent classic” and worth crossing the river for. Head here for a special dinner or when you’re ready to go big (before going home, maybe?) and order an appetizer, pasta (primo), meat, and dessert for the full Italian dining experience.

You’ve heard all the warnings about visiting in high summer, but if that’s the only time you have to visit, Itzkowitz says to do as the Romans do: rest in your cool hotel room in the afternoon and venture out again in the early evening. Bono agrees that summer can be...sticky but adds, “Those summer sunsets on a rooftop with an Aperol spritz certainly make for that 'Dolce Vita moment' we all crave.”

Portuesi recommends November, as it’s still relatively warm and the crowds have thinned out; January, when sale season starts; or April and October. “Tourists might still be there, but the colors of spring and autumn are amazing, and temperatures are on the warm side.” I love visiting in January or February when the crowds are much more manageable, and if you’re lucky, you can catch some lovely, crisp, sunny days.

Most visitors fly into Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino Airport (FCO). From there, you can take a 30-minute non-stop train to Termini, the central station, and take a taxi, Metro, bus, or tram to your accommodation. A cab from FCO to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls costs 50 euros. Ride-sharing services other than Uber Black are not available in Rome. 

Rome’s historic center is primarily flat and highly walkable. Many visitors take the Metro to reach the Vatican Museums, then walk back into the city from there (or take a cab from St. Peter’s Square). 

Buses and Metro, both run by ATAC , are also reliable ways to get around, though depending on the distance, walking may be faster. Note that taxis in Rome cannot be hailed on the street. Instead, they wait at taxi stands or ranks generally located near tourist areas. 

I strongly recommend against renting a car in Rome, as traffic and parking are a mess and the centro is a maze of one-way streets, many of which are pedestrian-only. If you pick up a car in Rome for a more extended tour in Italy, make sure you have your route mapped out in advance — and nerves of steel.

MIDI switchers allow you to turn multiple pedals on or off at the same time, which is great for players who want to go from whisper quiet clean guitar to a huge wall of sound without having to tap dance on their 'board. If you have an amp modeler you can even change your amp settings via MIDI, changing channels or just adding an EQ boost to push your guitar through the mix for an important part. 

A MIDI controller is a significant investment so you'll want to be sure you're getting the right one. When we recommend MIDI controllers we're doing it off the back of years and years of using them for live shows, whether that's fully MIDI-enabled rigs or using a switcher to change effects patches.

Like any guitar pedal we test, we'll jump straight into using it alongside our regular pedalboard. For a MIDI controller, this means setting up any MIDI-enabled pedals we have to determine how user-friendly the whole process is. We'll aim to test this alongside the general usability of setting up patches, hooking it up to a DAW, as well as how any software works versus the actual interface on the pedal.

We'll also be looking at the durability of the unit, as a MIDI controller by definition is something used on a gigging pedalboard. It has to be able to put up with the rigors of life on the road, so we'll closely examine the construction of the unit to ensure it feels rugged enough for purpose.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.
