So there you have it: those are our favorite travel journals for every kind of writer – but by no means the end of your options! Whether you’re buying for yourself or considering purchasing a travel journal as a gift, there’s lots to consider in the world of stationery.

From colourful covers and page prompts, to durability and simply whether or not pages are lined or blank, there are actually a surprising amount of factors that go into the decision making process.

Closure on journals is important, especially when they might be knocking around a suitcase or a backpack for longer stretches of time. If you don’t want your pages to get crumpled, and especially if you’re someone who likes to store mementos between the pages of your journal, a solid closure is a must.

Moleskine, for example, have that classic elastic band closre that keeps things safe and sound, whereas others come with a stylish leather or fabric bound tie that not only adds to the design detail but also means you’ll be able to slot things in between the pages.

The cover of a journal is pretty important. But first of all, what the cover of a travel journal is actually made out of will make a big difference as to what notebook you actually opt for.

Vegans will probably not want to go for a leather bound notebook, and may want to go for something like a fabric covered hardback book or more durable waterproof notebook instead.

If you’re open to leather, you’ll find it to be a durable option, and it will weather over the weeks, months and years to look worn and rustic.

You should also consider soft vs. hardcover – softcover is lighter, and easier to fit into a tightly-packed suitcase, but hardcover will give you a writing surface wherever you go. For something simple (and undoubtedly budget friendly), a card covered notebook or journal may be the best option for you.

What type of paper is used for the pages of a travel journal will also play a part in your decision making. It’s easy to think that paper is paper and that’s that, but in fact, there are many different types of paper for many different uses.

A thicker gsm of paper, for example, is something that’s more likely to be used in a sketchbook (90 gsm or higher), and is good if you don’t want permanent pens to bleed through, if you plan on painting, or sticking things in.

Then again, if you want something that’s a little more stylish and classic than bleached, white paper, then maybe more classy, cream-coloured pages will be what you want in your travel journal.

It’s also possible, as the Rite In The Rain brand shows, to have waterproof, weatherproof paper, in case you plan on writing in adverse weather conditions.

Essentially it comes down to what you will be doing on those pages: painting, sketching, doodling, making notes, or whatever. Consider the effect of your planned use will have on different sorts of paper and then make your choice.

4. What’s on the page?

Though in the past, travel journals were pretty simple affairs (either a spiral bound journalists’ notebook, a Midori-style travel journal or something similar), things are a little bit different now.

Even just a few years ago, pages only came either blank, ruled or squared. Nowadays, pages in travel journals sometimes come pre-decorated. This may be cool for some people, but for others it may feel like any pre-existing writing or illustration on the page takes away from your own memories.

Prompts in some books can be fun: they encourage you to make lists of things you otherwise wouldn’t have considered, like your favourite foods, favourite hotels, and even random convenience store items you find in the countries you visit. Other times, text on the page acts as a prompt to get you thinking, maybe even getting you to write something more in-depth than you were planning to.

All in all, the choice is whether you want a completely blank page to start with – which can be daunting for a lot of people – or if you want to be gently nudged into creating an awesome travel journal for yourself. Either way, though different, is totally legit.

It’s very simple and very basic, but this is going to be a pretty huge (no pun intended) deal when it comes to deciding exactly what travel journal you are going to purchase for yourself.

If you’re heading off on a year-long backpacking trip around the world and you feel like you’ve got your one bag travel down to a T, then you’re going to want something compact and light.

However, if you want to really get into creating a scrapbook-style travel journal full of memories, sketches and tickets, then you are going to want a big enough book to fit all of that in.

If your plan is to use your travel journal for things like city breaks and two week-long vacations – in which instance you may be using a suitcase – then you may not worry too much about the size, with room in a large suitcase for a larger travel journal, naturally.

Another thing to consider is what you’re going to look like if you feel like writing your travel journal in public. It may not be practical to be lugging around an A4 sized travel journal, or to get it out if you want to make note of the tiny cafe you’re in, or trying to write on a cramped seat on a train or bus. Compact in these cases may be a lot better!

6. Length of your trip

Next to size, when thinking about what sort of travel journal is going to be right for you, a lot of people often circle back to this factor: just how long is the trip?

The thing is, some travel journals are more geared up towards one single trip: a month in Thailand, two weeks exploring Italy, a six week long road trip through the USA. That sort of thing, in which case, you won’t be needing (or wanting) a zillion pages.

Other travel journals are for numerous trips, such as the lengthy options offered by Moleskine and Midori-style notebooks (the latter of which have no structure, and for which you can buy paper-only refills for the leather cover), mean that you can dip in and out, adding different details to your various adventures, referring back to past travels: a weekend in Berlin here, an epic hike in Nepal there.

Essentially, the fewer the pages, the more likely the travel journal in question will be good for a single, perhaps lengthy trip. For the serial travellers and backpackers out there, something longer and more permanent may be the travel journal for you.

7. Organization

No longer simple collections of pages between two hard (or soft) covers, the best travel journals of today sometimes boast a whole load of interior organization to help keep you and your trip on the right track.

From simply adding an interior pocket, where you can keep a few important tickets and pictures safe, to going all out and adding plenty of envelopes and places to slip in all manner of small, special physical memories from your travels, it can vary quite a bit.

But organization isn’t just about pockets. There are other things to think about, too. Some travel journals come complete with calendars, spaces for to-do lists, maps, itineraries and even packing tips. These kind of added extras mean that the journal turns into more of a planner all round scheduling.

Obviously. Money, money, money: it’s going to be a big factor in whether you choose to buy such and such a travel journal over another one. Let’s face it, you can’t buy what you can’t afford.

Even if you can afford it, $48 might just seem – to some people – like too much to ask for a travel journal. On the other hand, some people may not trust that a sub-$8 travel journal will be any good in terms of durability.

The fact of the matter is that cheap things can be surprisingly good, and expensive things can be surprisingly bad. When it comes to budget, it’s best to choose something mid-range that has good reviews and that meets the needs of what you’re looking for in a travel diary: don’t skimp out just because it’s $5 more than you wanted it to be. Seeing the World One Step at a Time

After several months of preparation we were off to embark on an adventure we would never forget. An episode which would seem extraordinary in comparison to the routine vacations we had been accustomed to taking on holiday in our own country.

When I first arrived in Moscow the first thing I noticed at the airport terminal was how seemingly dull and aloof the Russian passengers seemed to be. However, upon leaving the airport I was immediately intrigued by all of the ancient sights. Going through Moscow was like a little tour because there was so much to see. I was later to learn that the people of Russia were not only interesting, but full of spirit and culture.

Our flat was a yellowish colored building from the late eighteen hundreds, it was nothing like anything I had ever seen before, the courtyard was spotted with colorful Russian babushkas chatting away, on the latest neighbor hood gossip, as I passed them by one of them looked at me with and owlish stare, as if to say “what are you doing here?”. The courtyard also had a little area with play equipment, and pick nick tables.

The first night I was in Moscow I couldn’t sleep due to jet lag, but late in the morning I woke up and was ready for my first adventure. I ran in the living room to waken my sister and mother but they were already up and about. I asked my sister to take me somewhere really unusual, someplace that would be breathtaking. She took my mother and I to the Kremlin and breath taking it was. It was the moment I had been waiting and I was soon to finally witness the beauty of the Kremlin. I remember how big it was and it took the rest of the day to tour the entire area of the Kremlin. Boris Yeltsin was president at the time so the Kremlin was his official residence, but he wasn’t there for the most part.

The first thing we saw that was in the Kremlin was the famous bridge that Napoleon Bonaparte and his great army had rode on during their mission to conquer Russia; and to be able to walk on that very bridge was like going back in time.

We walked by a snack area where some people were performing on the side walk, and kids were riding on their sleds. One of the kids let me borrow his sled and I experienced my first sled ride. After sledding down the hill a couple times we were off to visit the next sights.

When you walked into the main entrance of the Kremlin there was a quaint little church. The exterior was painted a light pink, and the interior had all sorts of beautiful sealing paintings, and Russian Orthodox art. In addition to the beautiful domed ceilings there was an enormous display of the tsar’s old jewelry. There were scepters made of gold with engraved rubies and stones from emeralds to sapphires, and even diamonds. There were also crowns laden with gems and stones, each one was unique, each one was a wonder.

After visiting that sight we headed off to Saint Basils Cathedral. Now there is a story behind Saint Basils Cathedral that I feel compelled to share. The church was originally built by Ivan the Terrible in 1555-61. It was called the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin (Pokrovsky Sobor) to commemorate the capture of Kazan, capital of the khanate of Kazan, on the festival of the Intercession of the Virgin in 1552. According to the chronicler, the architects of the cathedral, Postnik and Barma, were sent by God to Ivan the Terrible. There is a story that Ivan had them blinded after the building was completed, of course this story is only a myth for there was no evidence that any such event had occurred, “Ivan the terrible was a Virgo”.

Saint Basils Cathedral was a beautiful sight but only on the outside, the inside was very plain, and blase. According to my sister the inside used to be very beautiful, but it was never kept up due to the churches lack of finances, but later on it was restored, but not to its original state. A lot of the Russian Orthodox wall, and ceiling paintings had been painted over because there was no use in trying to repaint what was originally there.

We had spent almost the whole day at the Kremlin but there was one more sight I wanted to visit, this is the sight that I feel was of the greatest interest in my entire tour of the Kremlin. The sight was a burial grave of Vladimir Lenin, now this was no ordinary burial sight, it was a glass case which allowed you to see Vladimir Lenin preserved, So they had the real Lenin standing there before your very eyes dressed in a black suit. After we visited that sight We were getting achy and tired so we left.

When we came home we told all of our friends and family about our exciting visit to the Kremlin, and after that my sister treated us to some of her home made borsht. (This is a delicious, traditionally made soup.)

We went to bed and woke up at around two in the after noon the following day, we put our clothes on, drank some great Russian cream soda and we were off on our next trip. This time we were to see a ballet, I remember exactly what ballet it was too, it was Romeo & Juliet. I even cried because I was so taken by the performance. After we watched the Ballet and wept like babies, we went out to a nice Greek dinner.

The third day I was there I was playing on the playground, because we had a court yard with a play area, and I met this really interesting person named Timor he was from Uzbekistan, we automatically connected we started discussing the war in Bosnia because, America was at war with Yugoslavia during that time. We talked for hours and hours, and by the end of the day I made a friend.

Soon he started teaching me how to speak Russian, and in no time at all I was almost speaking Russian fluently. He was only one amongst the many people I met in Russia who were good genuine people. Its funny because Russians seem so cold and distant from first impression but when you got to know them they are the most amazing people. Traditionally Russians are also very polite and sociable; you will never lack a cup of tea or be forgotten on your Birthday by a Russian friend!

There are many Cities in Russia but Moscow is definitely Russia’s land mark, St. Peters Burg, runs a good second. My mother and I actually considered going to St. Peters Burg but it wasn’t in the stars.

Winter passed quickly and it was time for us to take our visa.

The funny thing is, while visiting Moscow there were a variety of neighboring European countries we could have visited to renew our visa, but for some peculiar reason my mother chose Estonia.

I enjoyed the train ride there but the beds were small and uncomfortable and the train was noisy and irritating, but in the day time it was really fun to ride on.

When we got to Estonia it wasn’t much of a culture shock because in my opinion it reminded me of Russia, but it was cleaner. It was like a hybrid between Sweden and Moscow. It was part of the Soviet Union at one time but then it became it’s own country, but some of the buildings and monuments looked very similar to the ones in Moscow, but all and all we had a nice stay there. We went to the movies and saw Shakespeare In Love, and then we toured the capital of Estonia.

After we came back to Russia it had been a nearly been a six month stay, and we were starting to miss our family and friends in America, we stayed in Russia one more month before we decided to return to the States. Three weeks before we left it was my birthday, July 4th, Independence day. We hosted a nice birthday bash with all of our friends and family. It was a birthday party that will never be erased from my memory!

Of course the last couple of weeks we were there we tried to absorb as much time as possible doing fun things like going swimming at the lakes and going to all of the museums we could. You could get any where in Moscow by subway, trolley, or taxi. (very inexpensive)

Another enthralling place we visited in the summer timer was Victory Square. There was a huge roller-skating area there with several Russian orthodox cathedrals; there were also mosques. It was a very interesting place.

For some reason every person I have met that has not been to Moscow has been joined with the notion that Moscow is cold all year long, but that is a misconception because Moscow is scolding hot in the summer time, it even gets as hot as California for a short time. The lakes in northern California are nicer though because a lot of lakes in Moscow are rather polluted.

Well our three weeks were almost over and our flight was on the 21st of July so we had to start packing our things. Leaving Moscow was excruciatingly painful because we were so attached to Moscow and it was so rich in culture, and it was simply a very exciting place to visit, but we decided that it was time to go home! We left early in the morning. A friend drove us to the airport, and my best friend Timor accompanied us for our last couple hours of being in Moscow, When we arrived at the airport we cried as we said our final goodbyes. We boarded the plain and we were off, that was the last time I ever saw my dear Russian friend Timor.

On the way to the U.S. we stopped in Finland for seven hours, I didn’t get to see much of Finland but I got to take a little tour, Finland was just as I thought it would be, clean, orderly and beautiful, along with that however it was very expensive in Finland. A burger was seven dollars, a short bus ride was nine dollars, and by the time we had finished our tour, and our little lunch, we had spent over sixty dollars, and we barely did anything of much amusement. But I am sure that if I would have stayed there long enough I would have had more fun.

After our seven hour wait we boarded the plane once again, and that was the end of our European experience, it all seemed to come and go so quickly, and now I wish I would have done more while I was in Europe.

Over all I think traveling to Moscow was the most enriching experience, before I went to Moscow, I had also been to Japan, South Korea, and Mexico, I was actually born in Japan. I would never trade in my traveling experiences for the world, living in Moscow was very mind broadening.

I think that every one should get a chance to travel as it is a very rewarding and inspiring experience, because as the saying goes, the more you know, the more you know that you don’t know, and in my opinion that is the beauty of traveling to different countries. Many people get stuck in one place and they never get a chance to see the world, and I think that it is a very sad thing. My experience abroad made me a nicer person and I learned all sorts of things, good and bad, but most of all it taught me to appreciate life and enjoy life more than I did before. In Moscow it seemed as if something interesting happened every day, and Moscow definitely teaches you to embrace the novel and the unexpected.

Denver nuggets | coach michael malone after nuggets’ game 4 loss to lakers: “there is no panic”, denver’s defense in the paint has been soft despite taking 3-1 lead back to ball arena.

Coach Michael Malone is a numbers guy.

Of course, he knows that his Nuggets lead the Lakers 3-1 and can close out the first-round playoff series Monday night at Ball Arena. But he’s also acutely aware of statistical trends floating like icebergs, threatening Denver’s voyage toward a second straight NBA championship.

• The Nuggets have shot 46.0% from the floor, including an ugly 27.6% on 3-pointers. Los Angeles has made 49.9% of its shots (30.4% on 3-pointers).

• The Lakers have led in 136 of the series’ 192 minutes, a 70.8% clip. The Nuggets have only led for 21.8% of the time, with the score tied in the remaining 7.4%.

• In the last two games, the Lakers dominated in the paint, scoring 70 points in a Game 3 loss and 72 in their Game 4 victory on Saturday night. According to ESPN Stats & Information, L.A.’s 72 points in the paint are the most in a playoff game in the past 25 years.

• Denver has trailed at halftime in all four games, getting outscored in the first halves 233-198. The Lakers have held a double-digit lead in all four games.

Denver should get past the Lakers in the first round — no NBA team has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a seven-game playoff series — but current trends could sink the Nuggets in the second round, where they are likely to face Minnesota.

“It would have been great to close out, 4-0, and sweep the Lakers again,” Malone said Saturday night, referring to Denver’s sweep in last year’s Western Conference Finals. “But that rarely happens. So, obviously, the first message is, we got Game 3, we have a chance to go home and close it out in our building. So we got one on the road, which is really important to close out any series.

“There is no panic. We have a chance to go out and close it, but the challenge within that is that we can’t continue to play like this. The (Lakers) are not rolling over. They are not going to give us the first round. We are going to have to earn it and take it.”

After Saturday night’s Game 4 loss, Nuggets swingman Michael Porter Jr. talked about the danger of Denver’s sluggish starts.

“It takes a lot of energy to come back from these double-digit leads — down 20, down 15, whatever it is,” Porter said. “Tonight, they did a good job of sustaining it. Whenever we got within 10 or eight, it seemed like they made a 3-pointer or a big shot. So credit to them.”

Malone was especially irked by Denver’s lackluster defense in the paint in its 119-108 loss.

“They shot 64% in our paint, (compared to) 33% in non-paint shots,” he said. “It starts in transition. Blow-bys, one-on-one containment, no help. I just didn’t think we had the requisite physicality or urgency. It did not seem like a close-out game for us.”

Saturday night, NBA icon LeBron James set the tone at the very beginning, showing that the Lakers were going about their business with urgency. The Nuggets didn’t respond in kind.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” Malone said. “Not just because of the scoreboard, but the ease with which they scored. The very first basket they scored was a walk-in layup. That set the tone for the whole night, and it was LeBron James. And it was downhill, with his left hand. That was an ominous sign.”

According to Second Spectrum, the Lakers have made 58 layups or dunks in the past two games, the most over a two-game playoff span since player tracking began in 2013-14.

James, who scored 30 points in Game 4, said the Lakers still have a chance to make history.

“We’ve given ourselves another lifeline, and it’s a one-game series for us. Monday’s game is the most important game of the season for us, and we understand that,” James said.

Denver center Nikola Jokic, who had 33 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists for his 18th career triple-double in the playoffs, did not seem alarmed by Denver’s play. When asked if he was frustrated or upset about the Nuggets’ failure to win Game 4, he said, “I don’t feel that. They are a great team. We have another opportunity to win one. Hopefully, we will win at home, but if we lose, we will have another opportunity, so we will see.”

National outlets hand out grades for Green Bay Packers draft after Day 3

GREEN BAY − The Green Bay Packers selected 11 new players over the course of three days in the 2024 NFL draft, and once again, national writers had some opinions on the various selections.

The six players joining the fold included Oregon safety Evan Williams , Duke interior lineman Jacob Monk , Oregon State safety Kitan Oladapo , Georgia State tackle Travis Glover , Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt and Penn State cornerback Kalen King

Here's how national outlets graded the team's choices:

Pro Football Focus and Sports Illustrated both give the Packers a B-plus overall

Rather than grade individual picks, PFF and SI both gave the Packers an overall grade.

From Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated : " (Jordan) Morgan was beloved by a few teams with coaches from the Kyle Shanahan tree thanks to his movement ability, which should really shine in the Packers’ outside zone system. With some proper coaching − and Green Bay has an excellent offensive line staff− Morgan could end up being one of the best tackles in this draft class. (Edgerrin) Cooper was the first off-ball linebacker selected in the draft, and his relentless pursuit stands out on tape and should give the Packers a versatile defender who can remain on the field in multiple situations."

From Pro Football Focus on the day 3 picks: "(Evan) Williams earned a 75.0-plus PFF grade in three straight seasons and offers some value as a blitzer. From 20 pass-rushing attempts in 2023, he racked up eight quarterback pressures, including five sacks. … (Jacob) Monk wasn’t among the top 300 players on the PFF big board and came in at 272nd overall on the consensus big board. But the Packers tabbed him as their guy here in a trade-up, continuing to add depth on the interior. Monk showed some versatility over the past few years at Duke, playing over 200 snaps at both center and right guard in each of the past two seasons. … The Packers add (Kitan) Oladapo, who is coming off his best college season. This past year, he earned an impressive 88.3 PFF overall grade and a 91.3 run-defense grade, the latter ranking as the best mark among Power Five safeties." PFF also considered quarterback Michael Pratt excellent value and considered King solid value.

USA Today gives Michael Pratt an A-minus

Ayrton Ostly was enamored with the Packers' seventh-round pick of Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt.

"Pratt was a four-year starter at Tulane and that experience shines through on tape. He's rarely panicked and knows what to do in most every situation. His delivery is quick, clean, and he produces when he's in a rhythm. At the very least, he'll be a top-level backup for the Packers going forward."

He didn't like Oladapo, giving that pick a D-plus.

"Oladapo's tape from Corvallis is impressive with a blend of solid athleticism at the right size for a box safety. He was one of the best run defenders in the country at the position, per Pro Football Focus. But he's the third safety Green Bay's drafted in the last three rounds. And they just signed Xavier McKinney in free agency."

Ostly gave Williams a B, Monk a C-plus, with King and Travis Glover both getting a C-minus.

Bleacher Report loved the Oladapo pick

From D-plus to A-plus for the Oregon State safety.

"Oregon State safety Kitan Oladapo is built a little differently than everyone else in this year's defensive back class," Brent Sobelski of Bleacher Report wrote . "According to Sports Info Solutions, Oladapo allowed a meager 31.4 QBR when targeted this past season. Clearly, he has the size and length (32⅜-inch arms), with a good athletic profile. Bigger safeties are usually stiff and struggle when asked to turn and pedal or cover in space. … With the 169th overall pick, the Green Bay Packers drafted a fringe first-round talent, according to the Bleacher Report Scouting Department. Value doesn't get much better than that during the NFL draft."

Sobelski gave Cs to Williams, Monk and Glover.

"The Packers can now play extensive big nickel after Xavier McKinney signed as a free agent," he said of Williams. "Plenty of flexibility exists in the defense to handle all of the weapons now found in the NFC North that include Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, DJ Moore and Amon-Ra St. Brown."

He gave Pratt a B and King a C-plus.

CBS Sports gives the Packers As for Monk and Oladapo

Chris Trepasso of CBS Sports gave a B-minus to Williams but then an A-minus to Monk and A for Oladapo.

"Hyper-experienced, legitimately versatile blocker who probably plays center or guard at the next level," Trepasso said of Monk. "Athleticism and acceleration off the snap instantly stand out. Doesn't have immense size or length but can win with quickness or power against smaller upfield rushers. Classic Packers pick. He'll be a useful depth option for a while."

For Oladapo, "Very similar to Jaden Hicks who went a round earlier. Large, strong safety body type but fluid and instinctive in coverage. Could play with a tick more energy but his methodical style keeps him out of trouble. Re: missing tackles or being baited by misdirection. Huge interception radius. Speed is good, not great. Sound tackler."

Glover, Pratt and King were all given a B-plus by Trepasso.

NFL.com gives the Packers an overall B

Chad Reuter of CBS Sports gave the Packers a B.

"The Packers received two Day 3 picks trading down with New Orleans in the second round and then selected Cooper to fill the athletic second-level defender role in the Packers' new scheme. (Javon) Bullard was my pick at No. 58 for the Packers in my seven-round mock draft because the team still needed a safety who can play deep and in the box, even after signing Xavier McKinney. (MarShawn) Lloyd was worthy of a third-round pick, but fans might question the pick after signing Josh Jacobs and re-signing AJ Dillon. (Ty'Ron) Hopper is athletic but must clean up his tackling to prove worthy of a third-round selection.

Eric Edholm of NFL.com didn't offer a grade but did have some encouraging thoughts.

"Williams grew on me as the pre-draft process went on. He might not be special in any way, but he's extremely solid and assignment-sound. He might never be a big playmaker, but Williams can hit and will work to earn some kind of role.

"Monk played center, guard and tackle over five seasons with the Blue Devils but likely projects to center in the NFL. He's smart and competitive and has above-average athleticism in a smaller frame. Oladapo is a nicely proportioned athlete with outstanding length and enough athleticism to be tried as a safety or even a zone corner. He's a bit older but can make his mark at multiple spots because of his willingness to tackle.

"Glover is a typecast developmental OT prospect with so-so movement skills but ideal length and grip strength. He flashed some real finishing ability, albeit vs. a lower level of competition."

He was 75 years old.

Round 1 of the NFL Draft started off with three quarterbacks in the first three picks with Caleb Williams , Jayden Daniels , and Drake Maye coming off the board. The run on offense continued through the next few picks ahead of the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 overall.

The Falcons made it four quarterbacks in the first eight selections by selecting Washington's Michael Penix Jr.

This came as a surprise to many after the Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to start free agency and analysts and fans took to social media to react.

Carolina Panthers pick Michigan football's Michael Barrett in Round 7 of 2024 NFL draft

No team in the country has won more than Michigan football and no player in program history has won more than Michael Barrett.

Now the Carolina Panthers hope those winning ways can transfer, after they selected the U-M linebacker in seventh round with the 230th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The 5-foot-11, 233-pound Barrett was named a captain on Michigan's 2023 national championship team; he finished his career with U-M records with 64 games played and 52 wins (35 starts) as he recorded 208 tackles, 8½ sacks, four forced fumbles, two interceptions and one touchdown against Maryland in the 2022-23 season.

Barrett, a star quarterback who was a two-time all-state player in high school, moved to defense upon arrival in Ann Arbor under Don Brown, where he began his career in the 'viper' role. Barrett played in two games as a freshman, took the next step and appeared in 13 (just two on defense) as a sophomore before he finished his junior season third on the team in tackles in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season.

In 2021 when Mike MacDonald came in and Brown came out, the switch didn't seem to benefit Barrett, however, he stuck it out as the Will linebacker and became an important piece in the middle of the Wolverines' defense as he finished second on the team in tackles in 2022 as a grad student and was named the team's Most Improved Player on defense.

After weighting his NFL options, he chose to return for a final year in 2023, then was named a captain, started all 15 games as a sixth-year 65 tackles including 3.5 for loss with 3.0 sacks, five quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two pass breakups as he was named third team All-Big Ten.

It's what got him to this point.

“This guy showed up, I mean that’s the bottom line,” ESPN's Mel Kiper said earlier this offseason. “You talk about an overachiever, a guy that was around the football, think about Jim Harbaugh, a guy that was kind of a staple. You knew every week he would be a guy that could be a leader, he’s rock solid, a heck of a collegiate player as a backup in the NFL, special teamer, a guy that you put out there and he’s gonna be a warrior on the field. He’s a guy [that’s] very instinctive."
