Want to eat your way through Salzburg? Austria’s famous for Mozart, sure, but it always has some great food!

Why not explore Salzburg’s tastes with a food tour? It’s the perfect way to combine historical sites and a hungry belly.

On average people spend on average 2 to maybe 3 days in Salzburg before moving on to either Hallstatt or Vienna.

That leaves you with a small window of time to see everything Salzburg has to offer!

What Are The Best Food Tours in Salzburg?

The best food tours in Salzburg are tours that take you on a little adventure around town as well as stopping for the best food imaginable!

The tour I attended, with the Salzburg Experience, has the perfect balance of historical highlights and tasty local food and drinks!

During my short stay in Salzburg, I was able to see so many of the main attractions.

This 3-hour walking tour stops at all the traditional food markets and local artisanal shops! The only rule on this tour is, to come hungry!

Why Do A Food Tour in Salzburg?

When I visit a new city I like to chill and take it all in rather than endlessly search the web for every little thing I need to see and do.

Booking a private tour guarantees you will get to see the good stuff with none of the stress and worry of planning your itinerary.

I had the best experience and that is why I highly recommend booking this tour, operated by Salzburg Experience !

How Many Days Do I Need in Salzburg?

Me in Salzburg in the fall.

The Old Town Salzburg is not very big. You can easily blast through all of it in just a couple of days. But there is so much to see in the surrounding areas you could stay a week a do day trips!

When I visited Salzburg I stayed for 2 nights. Truthfully, I wish I was there a few more nights so that I had time to do a Sound of Music Tour !

What Food Is Salzburg Known for?

salzburg food tours

Salzburg is most famously known as the birthplace of Mozart! His birth house, now a museum is a stop on this tour with Salzburg Experience.

Although most tourists come to Salzburg to attend a classical music concert and visit the various concert halls, they also come to eat!

The most traditional foods found in Salzburg are:

  • Schnitzel (thinned meat, breaded and fried)
  • Strudel (layer pastry will sweet or savory filling)
  • Salzburger Nockerl (sweet and fluffy souffle dessert originally from the city of Mozart)
  • Tafelspitz (boiled veal or beef in broth served with minced apples and horseradish)
  • Mozart Balls (Mozartkugel) (candies made of chocolate, pistachio, and nougat)
  • Sacher torte (rich chocolate cake)
  • Kasnocken (small dumplings with melted cheese and caramelized onions)

Salzburg Food Tour Itinerary

Meet at mozart square.

Your tour starts in front of the Mozart statue in Salzburg’s Old Town, Mozart Square. Here you meet your guide and the others in your group. The tour price is per group, up to 4 people! If you have 2 in your group, it is the same price as if you had 4.

The day starts with some introductions and a brief lesson on the history of Salzburg. You will learn about the salt mining trade, beer history, and Mozartkugel making, on your walk to Residenzplatz.

Residenzplatz

Residenplatz has some historical significance relating to food. Over the centuries, people in the city of Salzburg would gather at the Residence building in Residenzplatz for feasts.

It was here that the first cookbook of Salzburg was written in the 17th century!

Salzburg Cathedral

Next, your local guide will take you on a short walk to Salzburg Cathedral! This stunning seventeenth-century Baroque Cathedral is a must-visit in Salzburg.

Visiting this Catherdal on a tour is the best way to ensure you get in. The price of admission is included in the tour.

Pass by Hohensalzburg FORTRESS

salzburg food tours

As you continue on this great tour you will pass by Fortress Hohensalzburg! Your expert guide will take a moment to give you a brief history of Fortress Hohensalzburg.

It is the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe. I highly recommend doing this guided tour to visit Fortress Hohensalzburg!

St. Peter’s Abbey (Stift St. Peter)

salzburg food tours

Here you will have a quick visit to the oldest church in Salzburg! St. Peter’s church was founded in the 7th century! You are only stopping here briefly, but I advise coming back on another occasion and visiting the catacombs that are of great cultural significance!

You might recognize this catacomb from the famous movie The Sound of Music! In one of the scenes, the Trapp family is fleeing from National Socialists through St. Peter’s Cemetery and hides n the catacombs before making it to Switzerland.

Pass By Grosses Festspielhaus

Grosses Festspielhaus is a famous concert hall and in the summer months for hosts the Salzburg Festival! Salzburg Festival was established in 1920, and each summer the city of Salzburg hosts the annual festival of music and performances!

Universitatsplatz

Now you will arrive at the Grünmarket, which is one of the city’s food markets. Locals come to this enchanting square daily to purchase their fresh produce and other local goods!

It is also here where you actually meet the vendor and try some of the delicacies and local cuisine! We were able to sample some fresh apples and grapes, and local cheeses!

Mozart’s Birthplace

After your first little food tasting you will then make a stop at Mozart’s house, now a museum. This is only a brief 5-minute stop where your expert guide will tell you all about Mozart and his love for food, wine, and let’s not forget, music!

Getreidegasse

The tour continues down the famous shopping street Getreidegasse! Here you will walk by shops selling souvenirs and stop into a local shop or two for some Austrian wines and snacks.

We stopped in the cutest wine store and got a little history of the wines we tasted. This tour is a really unique experience for any food lover!

Alter Markt

Mozartkugeln

A stop for the sweet tooth! Here in Alter Markt, it is time to indulge in some of the famous Mozartkugeln! These round sugar confections contain pistachio, marzipan, and nougat! Finished by being dipped in dark chocolate and wrapped in decorative foil.

Truthfully, I had never tried one before this tour! The shopkeeper let us try one before we bought some. You can’t go to Salzburg without trying the original Mozartkugel!

Zum Zirkelwirt

The tour finishes at the restaurant Zum Zirkelwirt in the city center. Here you will sample some traditional Austrian food and a glass of wine! I love the feeling of being in a traditional Austrian restaurant! It is so warm and cozy.

Here we had sample-sized dumplings of spinach and cheese, and cheese pasta, “spaetzle” followed by a traditional dessert, Apple strudel. It was so sweet but so delicious!

There is a special goodie bag gift you receive at the end of the tour that is filled with some samplings of local products. It was one of the best things to end the day with!

When is the Best Time to Visit Salzburg?

salzburg food tours

Salzburg is a destination you can visit all year round! Every season will offer something different. The food tours are also different as the season’s change.

If you are visiting in the holiday season you will be able to try some of the famous glülwein (mulled wine) and in the spring and summer, some delicious white wines!

The views of the Bavarian mountains look incredible all year round as well. If you don’t mind a little cold weather! Austrian does experience a full winter.

I visited in the fall, which was lovely, but I would like to go back during the holidays. Christmas Markets in Europe are truly magical!

Spring and summer is the perfect time if you are interested in visiting the Mirabell Gardens!

Alternative Food Tour Salzburg

Wine & charcuterie tasting.

Perhaps you are interested in doing a private wine and charcuterie tasting? This 2-hour tasting class with a pro sommelier is perfect for wine lovers!

>> BOOK WINE & CHARCUTERIE TASTING

Beer & Food Pairing

Not everyone loves wine, so if you are more interested in beer, there is a tasting tour for you! Experience beer and food tasting in the historic Mönchsberg building!

You will try a variety of craft and traditional beers and local dishes! A tour is a great way to meet people when traveling.

Must Try Restaurants and Cafes in Salzburg

St. peter siftskulinarum.

There are many traditional Austrian restaurants you ought to have on your list! A great place, and the oldest restaurant in EUROPE, is St. Peter Siftskulinarum.

The first record of this restaurant is in the poem by Alcuin of York in 803. It is a place of great history and full of modern haute cuisine.

A well-awarded restaurant that also has a live jazz brunch every second Sunday of the month! open daily from 11:30 am to 11 pm Monday – Friday and 10 am to 11 pm Saturday and Sunday. Reservations are a good idea.

Ikarus in Hanger-7

Located in Hanger-7, an aircraft hanger near the city airport. Ikarus is a two-Michelin-star restaurant!

Season menu that changes every month, with various options for vegans, this is my top choice in restaurants!

Another Michelin-star restaurant for all you foodies! The menu also changes monthly with lots of options for vegetarians.

The ambiance here at Esszimmer is very cozy and intimate, perfect for date nights.

FAQ’s Salzburg Food Tours

The best way to find out if you can join as a solo traveler is to inquire directly with the tour operator. Often times there will be room for a solo traveler.

Most of these food tours are in small groups, but if the city markets are crowded, there isn’t much that can be done about it.

Read more about your Private Salzburg Food Tour

Your expert, English-speaking private guide will meet you in Mozart Square by the colossal bronze statue of the man himself – Salzburg’s musical hero. From here you will embark on a three hour walking and food tasting tour of the city. You’ll learn all about Salzburg’s history, culture, architecture, and famous personalities, all while tasting traditional Austrian food – from casual stand-up street food snacks to formal sit-down meals, with local wine and beer included too. (Or non-alcoholic drinks if you prefer).

Visit the lively outdoor market and enjoy a hearty, classic Austrian sausage and beer. Meet the local street food vendors and soak up the friendly atmosphere of this traditional Austrian food market.

Step inside a lovely, cozy traditional pub to enjoy a traditional beer and pretzel. Then explore the quaint and cobbled streets of Salzburg, that open up onto magnificent baroque squares as you head to your next stop for something sweet. At an independent traditional artisanal bakery shop you will get to try a pastry or sweet bread.

Another stroll through the Old City’s lanes will take us to a wonderful, warm, and welcoming restaurant where we will sit down to enjoy traditional dumplings or a dish called Stern Bräu – mouth-watering roasted pork with dumplings accompanied by a glass of beer or wine.

By this time you’ll be feeling pretty full with hearty Austrian fare, but there is time for one more stop at an historic venue run by the same family for several generations. Here you’ll finish the tour with a delicious sweet treat called Mozartkugel the Mozart Ball. This was invented in 1890 by master confectioner Paul Furst, and named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Salzburg’s musical hero. It is a delicious round confection consisting of pistachio, marzipan, and nougat and covered with dark chocolate. A rich, elegant and tasty finish to a very satisfying three hours!
