In november 2021, heathrow airport brought in a new charge for dropping off passengers at their requested terminal – the last major uk airport to do so. here’s what you need to know about the charge, and how it affects private hire drivers ..

This information is correct at the time of updating on 29 February 2024.

Update – from 29th August 2023, non-ULEZ compliant vehicles will have to pay a £12.50 daily charge in addition to drop-off charges at Heathrow. Check whether your vehicle meets the ULEZ requirements here .

Heathrow Airport’s drop-off charges: At a glance

•   From 1 November 2021, all vehicles entering Heathrow terminal drop-off zones will pay a £5 charge per visit , though discounts and exemptions apply. 
•   It works through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) – there are no barriers, and you’ll be liable for the charge as soon as you enter the zone.
•   You can pay the £5 charge in advance, on the day you drop-off or by midnight the next day.
•   There are three ways to pay: online , by autopay , or by using an automated telephone service. There’s no option to pay at airport ticket machines or terminal drop-off zones.
•   If you fail to pay the charge, you’ll be fined. The penalty charge notice is £40 if you pay within 14 days, rising to £80 after that.
•   The charge operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
•   Pick-ups are not affected, and these can still take place via the car parks. You can’t pick up passengers from the drop-off zones.

How to Pay Heathrow Drop-Off Charges

Drivers can pay the Heathrow drop-off charge as a guest, or by setting up a personal or business account.

If you’re paying as a guest, you can pay for more than one trip (up to 20 trips at a time). This is especially useful if you’re dropping off multiple passengers per day. You can pay these ahead of time either online or on the phone, or by midnight the next day after you’ve been to the airport.

If you’re buying in advance, pre-paid charges will be valid for 12 months. Unused charges or ‘trips’ can be refunded before they expire.

Having a personal account means you can buy multiple trips (again, up to 20 trips in one go) for one vehicle. You can also choose to set up automatic payments any time the registered vehicle goes into a terminal drop-off zone (known as autopay).

Business accounts mean multiple vehicles (up to 50,000) can be linked to one account. Business accounts require autopay to be set up.

Blue Badge Holders

Passengers who are Blue Badge holders don’t have to pay the Heathrow Airport drop off charge, and this includes where they are getting dropped off by Uber or another taxi service.

The Blue Badge scheme allows disabled passengers to park closer to their destination.

To avoid the drop-off charge Blue Badge riders need to apply, which they can do three months in advance or by midnight the day after their drop-off.

Two-wheeled motorbikes don’t have to pay the charge, but drivers of electric vehicles will still have to pay.

How to pay the Heathrow drop-off charge and how to avoid the fee

Airport bosses introduced the drop-off charge at Heathrow in November 2021

Travelling to Heathrow Airport can be a stressful ordeal. However, if you are lucky enough to pinch a lift off a family member or friend you can be dropped off right by your designated terminal.

It means you do not need to lug your overpacked and heavy suitcase onto the shuttle bus . However, this scheme does come with a £5 drop-off charge.

However, make sure your driver does not get left with a hefty £80 fine for failing to pay the charge. The drop-off fee service was introduced in 2021 in an aim to reduce airport-related traffic .

The charge applies to all passenger drop-off zones which are in front of the terminal buildings. BerkshireLive has gathered all the information you need to help give you a stress-free journey to the airport.

How do I pay the drop-off charge?

A motorist is charged £5 each time they enter a terminal drop-off zone. It is enforced 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, you do not pay for using this service at a machine.

Instead, people must pay for the charge online in advance with either a debit or credit card. Alternatively, you can pay by an automated telephone service or automatically once you've set up autopay.

There are automatic number plate recognition cameras which record what vehicles have entered the zones. Anyone who fails to pay in advance is smacked with an £80 Parking Charge Notice (PCN). This fine can be reduced to £40 if you pay it within 14 days.

Can you dodge the Heathrow drop-off charge?

There is a way to be dropped off at Heathrow Airport without having to hand over money. Drivers can drop off passengers at Heathrow's Long Stay car parks.

Holidaymakers can then simply hop onto a free bus transfer to the terminal. Those who hold a valid Blue Badge can apply for a 100 per cent discount and be dropped off at the terminal drop-off zones.

Another option available to Blue Badge holders includes two hours of parking free of charge at one of Heathrow's Long Stay car parks.

Heathrow drop off charge: how to pay the fee 2024.

As a private hire driver in London, the fewer fines or Parking Charge Notice you get, the more money you save.

Many UK airports have drop off charges, and to help our family of PCO drivers keep their hard-earned money, the Otto Team have put together comprehensive guides to these terminal drop off charges.

In this article, we explore how the London Heathrow Airport terminal drop off charge works. From the location of the drop off areas, payment methods, to other free Heathrow airport parking and drop off points, this post has got you covered.

Quick facts

In addition to the Heathrow terminal, the London Gatwick Airport and Stansted Airport also have terminal drop off charges. Luton Airport’s drop off zone is now operating out of the Mid-stay car park as a result of the fire in October 2023.

What is the Heathrow drop off charge?

Introduced in November 2021, the Heathrow Airport terminal drop-off charge is a £5 fee that applies to all vehicles (including private hire vehicles) dropping off passengers at the London Heathrow terminal forecourts.

The terminal drop off charge is enforced via Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Please note that there are no barriers, meaning that you will incur a charge once you enter the drop off zone, and it applies to all four terminals.

Did you know?

The London ULEZ now covers the whole of Greater London. Uber drivers of non-compliant vehicles using Heathrow’s Terminal Drop Off areas will also have to pay a £12.50 daily charge.

How to pay the Heathrow drop off charge?

You can pay in advance, on the day you drop off, or by midnight the next day.

Please note that the charge cannot be paid at an airport ticket machine or in the terminal drop off zones. It is only payable online , via an automated telephone service , or via autopay .

To register your PCO car with Heathrow, visit the airport terminal’s page to create a personal account , then you’ll be able to set up auto pay.

If you enter a drop off area a second time, you will need to pay the charge again and every time after that.

What if I fail to pay the Heathrow drop off charge?

If you don’t pay for the Heathrow drop off charge by midnight the next day, you will receive an £80 PCN missed by APCOA Parking, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. Visit this link to pay a PCN online.

The Otto Team would like to remind you that we will not register your PCO car with the Heathrow Airport on your behalf. This is your responsibility. If you do airport jobs regularly, please set up an Auto Pay account to avoid unnecessary fines.

Are there any free drop off areas?

According to the Heathrow terminal , free drop offs are available at the Long Stay terminal car parks, where passengers can take a free bus transfer to the terminals. Find out more about Heathrow’s long stay car park here .

Can I pick up Uber passengers at Terminal 2?

Uber drivers can pick up passengers from Heathrow Airport’s designated Short Stay car park. It is prohibited to pick up passengers from Heathrow’s terminal forecourts.

Do private hire vehicles have discounts?

Unfortunately not. PHVs don’t have a 100% discount from the terminal drop off charge. As a PCO driver, you need to pay the charge if you drop off in the terminal drop off zones.

HEATHROW Airport introduced a £5 drop-off charge in October 2021 for people travelling in any motor vehicle.

Here's everything you need to know about how to pay, so you don't end up with a nasty penalty.

How do I pay Heathrow Airport drop-off charge?

You can pay the Heathrow Airport drop-off charge online.

To do this you must visit the Heathrow Airport Drop-Off website and enter your registration number.

You will then need to confirm that it is your car by verifying details such as the category it falls under, make, model and colour.

Once confirmed, you will be directed to a payment page.

It is also possible to use the automated telephone service to pay the drop-off charge — the number is 0330 008 5600.

There are no airport ticket machines, so the only payment methods are via your phone or through the website.

If you are a frequent user of the drop-off zone at London-Heathrow you can set up a personal or business account.

The personal account lets you add a vehicle, pay for a single drop-off, pre-pay for multiple drop-offs, set up autopay and review trip history.

How much is it to drop-off at Heathrow Airport?

It costs £5 to drop someone off at Heathrow Airport .

The policy is in line with charges at Gatwick and Manchester airports, which also have a £5 drop-off fee.

The charge applies 24 hours, 365 days a year.

You can pay for a single drop-off or pre-pay for multiple drop-offs through your phone or online.

If you pay for one drop-off, but then a minute later re-enter the drop-off zone, you must pay the £5 fee again.

Every time you enter the drop-off zone, you have to pay £5.

The charge must be paid by midnight the day after your visit.

Unlike some airports, there is no time limit in place at the Heathrow Terminal drop-off zone — but please keep in mind that you cannot leave your car unattended.

If you hold a Blue Badge card, you can apply for a 100% discount online and get the drop-off charge for free.

If you do not want to pay the drop-off charge, you can try using the long stay car parks , which will grant you a free 30 minutes .

However if you do use the drop-off zone and fail to pay the £5 charge before midnight of the next day, you will be issued a with a Parking Charge Notice (PCN), which must be paid within 28 days from the date of issue.

Here, you're welcome to park for up to 30 minutes at no cost and your passengers are only 5 minutes from the terminal. They'll need to catch a bus to the airport, and they run every 15 minutes to each terminal, making this a super convenient as well as cost-effective choice.

Blue Badge parking is available close to the shuttle bus pick up points or admin offices.

Heathrow Airport Terminal Drop Off

The most convenient form of drop off, this location allows your passengers to quickly collect their luggage from your car and enter the terminal. Drop-off areas are located right outside the terminal for the easiest and quickest way to drop-off passengers. A £5 charge applies at Heathrow every time a vehicle enters the terminal drop-off areas. You can either pay online in advance, via the Heathrow Drop Off website, or over the phone.

Blue Badge holders can apply for a concession which allows FREE access to the Terminal Drop Off zones.

Heathrow Short Stay

The ideal parking option if you'd like to drop passengers off within walking distance of the terminal but are keen for extra time to say your goodbyes. It takes just 2 minutes to walk to the terminal and prices start from £7.50 for up to 30 minutes.

Blue Badge parking is available close to the terminal. Access Routes and Help Points are located near these parking spaces.

What travelers should know about the UK's new entry fee

If you have plans to travel to any country within the UK ( England , Scotland , Wales or Northern Ireland ), you'll need to pay an entry fee starting in 2024.

The new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) , as it's called, will cost about £10 ($12.50 )  and will be fully implemented at the end of 2024 as the UK continues to digitalize its border control systems. The ETA will require some visitors to apply for an electronic pass to enter the UK for tourism, short-term business, transit and other common travel purposes.

It's a completely electronic system, based on the  United States' ESTA system , so you won't have to get bogged down on paperwork. Just as British travelers need to sign up for ESTA online before entering the US, Americans will likely be required to do the same for travel to the UK. 

So, how will the ETA work when it's implemented? It's not yet clear exactly what screening criteria will be used to grant an ETA but passengers will more than likely be asked to register passport information and answer a series of security questions online to determine eligibility.

Assuming you are successful, you will be issued with a pass which, combined with your passport, entitles you to visit the UK for a specific period.

Do you need a visa to go to the United Kingdom?

Here's what we know so far.

Who will need an ETA to enter the UK?

According to the government, the ETA applies to people who are eligible to travel to the UK without a visa. So that is anyone arriving for tourism purposes, visiting family or friends, or traveling to the UK for business or study for up to six months. It also applies to people eligible for the Creative Worker visa concession  and anyone transiting through the UK .

The UK is rolling out the new system in phases. Starting November 15, it will apply to visitors from Qatar. Then from February 22, 2024, it will be extended to citizens from Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The UK government has not listed additional countries included in the scheme but it is expected to be applied to all foreign visitors who currently have visa-free access to the UK, such as European Union citizens and people from the US, Australia, Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina, Israel, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and more before the end of 2024.

Irish citizens are excluded from the ETA requirement due to the Common Travel Agreement between the UK and Ireland.

Is the ETA a visa?

No. Nationals from some countries will still be required to apply for a visa and visa applications will continue to operate as before. The ETA is a pre-authorization system for travel that will apply to people from countries that currently have visa-free travel agreements with the UK. 

"The scheme will give the UK more control of our borders, allowing us to block threats from entering the UK while also providing individuals and carriers with more assurance at an earlier point in time about their ability to travel to the UK," the government stated.

How much will it cost to apply?

It will cost £10 to apply, which works out to about $12.50 or €8.50.

How soon before traveling should I apply for my ETA?

The ETA will take up to 72 hours to be approved. ETAs will be valid for visa-free travel for up to six months in the UK.

How long will my ETA be valid for?

Two years — so you'll need to reapply every two years for renewed access to the UK or whenever your passport expires.

Will my ETA grant me access to European countries?

No, the ETA is valid for entry to the UK only. If you are a non-EU citizen and you're eligible to visit the European Schengen Zone without a visa for a short-term stay, you'll soon need to apply for a similar permit. That's called an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) and it is expected to be rolled out early next year. That one will cost about €7 (or $7.50). As the UK is no longer part of the EU, British travelers will also have to apply for an ETIAS to travel to much of Europe when the new system is in place.

Hundreds of Heathrow Border Force officers to start four-day strike

More than 300 workers will take action over plans to introduce rosters that could force 250 of them out of jobs

Hundreds of Border Force officers at Heathrow airport will begin a four-day strike on Monday in a dispute over working conditions.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said more than 300 of its members will walk out from 5am on Monday to 7am on Friday.

The union said the workers, based at Heathrow terminals two, three, four and five, are protesting against plans to introduce rosters they say would force about 250 of them out of their jobs at passport control.

The union’s general secretary, Fran Heathcote, said: “It’s disappointing that despite talks last week, the Home Office is not prepared to grant any flexibility to their new roster.

“None of our dedicated and highly experienced members in the Border Force want to take strike action but the way they’ve been treated by their employer leaves them with no option.

“The Home Office still have time to prevent tomorrow’s strike if they agree to abandon this unworkable new system.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with the union’s decision to strike but remain open to discussing a resolution with the PCS.

“The changes we are implementing will bring the working arrangements for Border Force Heathrow staff in line with the way staff work at all other major ports, provide them with more certainty on working patterns and improve the service to the travelling public.

“We have robust plans in place to minimise disruption where possible, but we urge passengers to check the latest advice from operators before they travel.”

The Home Office has not applied to use a recently passed law aimed at guaranteeing a minimum level of service during strikes.

Lisa Webb, Which? consumer law expert, said: “Travellers will understandably be concerned about upcoming strikes and what this could mean for them. If you are travelling in or out of Heathrow on these days, be prepared for longer queues and delays.

“Travellers should also ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance from the date they book their trip and check the policy carefully: not all will cover them in the event of strikes by airline or airport staff, for example.”

How Heathrow airport strikes could threaten your holiday travel plans

Strikes are kicking off at Heathrow Airport today, threatening travel during the Early May Bank Holiday .

Planes could be grounded and flights delayed or cancelled at the busiest airport in London .

Two separate rounds of industrial action were planned for the end of this month and the beginning of May.

One dispute has now been resolved, but heavy disruption is still expected.

In 2023, Heathrow handled almost 80 million (79,180,434) passengers, also making it  one of the busiest  in the world.

What strikes are planned at Heathrow Airport?

The  Heathrow Border Force workers are striking  between 5am today and 7am on Friday May 3, involving the offices working on passport control across Heathrow terminals two, three, four and five.

That includes 300 members of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS).

Refuellers for Aviation Fuel Services (AFS) were also due to take industrial action for 72 hours beginning on Saturday.

However, their strike was called off this afternoon after a new pay and conditions offer was accepted.

Previously, a strike had been scheduled between April 11 and 14, but it was called off a week before it was due to begin as PCS were waiting for the Home Office to ‘demonstrate they are genuinely seeking a resolution’, according the organisation’s general secretary Fran Heathcote.

Another strike will take place for almost a week, from Tuesday, May 7, to Monday, May 13.

This is due to a separate dispute involving members of Unite the union who work in passenger services and security.

All the action is taking place around is a Bank Holiday weekend – one of the busiest travelling weekends of the year.

Why are border control staff striking?

Heathrow Border Force workers are striking over changes to their working conditions, PCS trade union revealed earlier in April.

The strike will see its members walk out over an issue with the new rostering system, which PSC representatives claim ‘would have a detrimental effect on all the current staff and leave nearly 250 without a job on passport control, including many with disabilities or caring responsibilities.’

Unite also confirmed that, between May 7 and May 13, almost 800 workers will walk out over plans to outsource hundreds of roles in an effort to cut costs.

Ms Heathcote said: ‘It’s disappointing that despite talks last week, the Home Office is not prepared to grant any flexibility to their new roster.

‘None of our dedicated and highly-experienced members in the Border Force want to take strike action but the way they’ve been treated by their employer leaves them with no option.

‘The Home Office still have time to prevent tomorrow’s strike if they agree to abandon this unworkable new system.’

‘There are no job losses as a result of these changes, and we continue to discuss with Unite the implementation of these changes for the small number of colleagues impacted,’ a spokesperson for Heathrow previously told Reuters.

‘To confirm, we have robust contingency plans in place for each of these individual areas and anticipate no impact on passenger journey.’

Heathrow said the airport’s reorganisation would see all passenger-facing security sourced in-house, with small trolley operations and passenger logistics teams transferred to third-party suppliers (who already work with the airport).

Why were refuelling staff planning to strike?

Refuelers said their employer had imposed drastic cuts to the terms and conditions of new staff recruited since January 2024.

Unite accused AFS, a joint venture between oil and gas companies, of ‘bully-boy tactics’, saying it is attacking the ‘most vulnerable new staff’ in its workplace by offering them reduced pension and sickness benefits.

But after negotiations, the union said the employer has agreed to improve the benefits offered to new workers to bring them closer in line with existing staff.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: ‘This is another victory for Unite in its campaign for members’ pay and conditions, and workers at AFS should be congratulated for standing firm against their employer and winning these improved terms.’

Another 800 Unite members are planning to strike later in May due to what the union called ‘deplorable action’ from the airport’s management.

The union said workers in passenger services, who assist travellers to catch connecting flights, trolley operations, and security guards will have their jobs outsourced by June.

Ms Graham vowed to give striking staff ‘unrelenting support’, adding: ‘Heathrow Airport’s actions are deplorable.

‘It is raking in massive profits for the bosses while trying to squeeze every last penny out of its workforce.’

What impact will the industrial action have on flights?

Border Force staff mostly only check arrivals at UK airports, so the greatest impact will be on people landing from abroad.

Though it isn’t clear what plans the Home Office has for dealing with potential staff shortages, during the last walk-out in December 2022, military personnel and civil servant volunteers were trained up to replace Border Force staff and deal with delays.

A spokesperson said: ‘We have robust plans in place to minimise disruption where possible, but we urge passengers to check the latest advice from operators before they travel.’

If passengers do experience delays to their flight as a result, they won’t be able to access compensation as the issue is beyond the airlines’ control.

However, the airline will need to provide frequent updates and, if needed, an alternative flight, as well as meals and accommodation during the delays.

What is Heathrow Airport’s response?

Regarding the industrial action planned by staff in passenger services, a Heathrow Airport spokesperson said: ‘We are reorganising our operations to deliver better results for our customers.

‘I Could Not Digest It’: Massachusetts Woman Shocked to Receive Visit from FBI Agents Who Confirmed Her Ex-Husband Paid ‘Hitman’ $50K to Murder Her Amid Their Custody Battle

A federal judge sentenced a Massachusetts attorney to 10 years in prison for paying a hitman to murder his ex-wife.

Allen Gessen, 49, was convicted of murder for hire after evidence revealed he tried to hire an undercover FBI agent he believed was a contract killer to murder his former partner and the mother of his two kids, Priscilla Chigariro.

He and Chigariro were embroiled in a long-standing dispute that would lead to contentious child custody proceedings, federal prosecutors stated.

Gessen’s murder plot began to take shape in the summer of 2022 when he started meeting with the undercover agent and sharing details of his crumbling, co-parenting relationship. He thought the agent was a hitman with extensive government connections, which he desired to use to dispense with Chigariro and get full custody of his kids.

Gessen originally plotted to have Chigariro illegally deported from the U.S. and wanted to pay the agent $100,000 to set up the deportation. Then, he realized murder was a “cheaper way to get rid of her” and was a more permanent solution.

He admitted to the agent that he made one previous attempt to hire someone to kill Chigariro. Prosecutors said he paid for a hit team from a foreign country to travel to Massachusetts, conduct reconnaissance, and surveil her. When the team told him it would cost another $210,000 to commit the murder, Gessen called it off.

Gessen paid the undercover agent a $25,000 deposit in the form of a gold coin worth $2,000 and a $23,000 payment wired to a bank account in San Francisco. He planned to pay another $25,000 once the murder had been executed. He set up a written agreement with the agent detailing phony “consulting services” to mask the true nature of the funds, then sent the agent details about his former partner’s whereabouts, schedule, and lifestyle habits.

A federal grand jury indicted Gessen in July 2022. At the time, he was a licensed attorney in New York. Chigariro said she was shocked when FBI agents arrived at her home after Gessen was charged.

“I can’t even begin to explain how I felt in that moment,” Chigariro said in a January 2023 video series on YouTube telling the story of her marriage. “All I remember was this feeling of — I don’t know how to explain it. It’s like I stopped feeling anything. I was so confused. I could not digest it. I couldn’t understand it. It was refusing to sink in.”

In the five-part vlog series, Chigariro said she and Gessen lived in Zimbabwe, where she modeled for a time, and Russia when they were together. She indicated that the relationship was abusive and recalled one time when Gessen hit her so hard that she “passed out.” There were also extended periods when Gessen would keep her son away from her.

After a one-week trial in May 2023, a federal jury found Gessen guilty. Once he has completed his prison term, he’ll serve three years of supervised release.

Mayor Adams demands Columbia University help pay for cost of NYPD raid on pro-terror rioters

Columbia University and other private colleges should cough up and help foot the bill for the NYPD having to swarm the Ivy League campus and crack down on pro-terror protests, Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday.

Hizzoner addressed the cost to Big Apple taxpayers after cops were finally called in to help oust a destructive mob that had illegally taken over Columbia’s Hamilton Hall academic building late Tuesday and to clear out an encampment on the school’s iconic lawn.

“We believe that they, too, should contribute to the cost,” the mayor told FOX5 when asked whether the Ivy League school should have to open its checkbook in the wake of the massive operation.

“One way to prevent the costs from escalating is to have a zero tolerance. As soon as the tents go up, it comes down. Do not allow this to continue to expand. That is what we saw at Columbia University and that is what we saw at CUNY as well.”

In dramatic scenes out of Columbia, cops were forced to position a ramp against the school’s historic building so officers could enter through second-floor windows after rioters sealed themselves inside.

Meanwhile, over at the City College of New York campus in Harlem, cops were forced to endure violent scenes as they clashed with unruly protesters.

More than 280 anti-Israel demonstrators were cuffed at both the Columbia and CCNY campuses in the “massive” NYPD operation.

The mayor said the subsequent cost — including overtime for officers — was part of an ongoing conversation with private institutions, particularly Columbia, in the wake of the protests.

Meanwhile, Hizzoner praised Fordham University’s quick handling of its protests after the NYPD was called in Wednesday to clear out its short-lived anti-Israel encampment.

“I have to really commend Fordham University. I spoke with the president yesterday. She was very clear on not allowing this to escalate,” Adams said.

“As you saw, immediate action was taken and it was not a prolonged situation like we saw on other grounds.”

Adams’ call for the city’s elite colleges to foot the costs comes after a bipartisan group of Big Apple pols fumed Wednesday that Columbia should be on the hook after the school’s embattled president, Minouche Shafik, requested cops stay on campus through May 17 to prevent unrest ahead of commencement.

“Columbia created this mess and Columbia — not New Yorkers — should pay to clean it up,” the nine council members, led by Queens Republican Joann Ariola, Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island) and Queens Democrat Bob Holden wrote in a scathing letter to university officials.

“New York City has very real problems that must be prioritized,” the letter continued, adding, “Babysitting spoiled students, activist professors, and professional protestors on an Ivy League campus is not one of them.”

They added that if the university wants city-paid officers to man the campus, it should contact the NYPD’s paid details unit, which specializes in providing security for private places.

“You certainly can afford it,” the lawmakers said, noting Columbia’s tuition costs of more than $68,000 a year and $13.6 billion in endowments.

Fifth body recovered more than a month after Baltimore bridge collapse

The body of a fifth person was recovered more than a month after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore , officials said.

Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was found Wednesday, the Key Bridge Response Unified Command said in a statement.

His body was discovered inside a red construction vehicle the Unified Command salvage teams found.

Maryland State Police, the state's Transportation Authority Police and the FBI assisted in the recovery.

"We remain dedicated to the ongoing recovery operations while knowing behind each person lost in this tragedy lies a loving family," State Police Superintendent Roland Butler Jr. said in a statement.

"Along with our local, state and federal partners, we ask that everyone extend their deepest sympathies and support to the families during this difficult time," Butler added.

One person remains missing in the collapse after a cargo ship  struck a bridge support on March 26. He was identified as José Mynor Lopez, according to NBC Washington .

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott thanked the teams who helped locate the victim.

"With the news that a fifth victim has been located, there is some small peace provided to another family amidst all the agony they've endured," he said Thursday in a post on X . "While we continue to be heartbroken for all these families, one more soul has been brought home, but one Marylander is still missing."

He continued: "To the family still waiting, our entire city joins you in hope for the same closure soon and shares in your grief. We continue to be here for you, in whatever way you need, now and always."

The bridge crumbled and plummeted into the Patapsco River seconds after a 948-foot, Singapore-flagged container ship, named the Dali, hit one of its support pillars, video showed .

Investigators said the ship's lights had shut off four minutes before they came back on. At 1:25 a.m., dark black smoke billowed from the ship’s chimney. A minute later, the ship appeared to turn, and the lights flickered again before it hit the support.

The FBI has opened a criminal investigation , two senior law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said last month. The sources said part of the investigation will involve whether the crew previously knew about potential mechanical issues on the ship. The probe will also look at the events that led up to when the vessel left the port, the sources said.

The bodies of the third and fourth victims were found last month. One of them was identified as Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval , 38, a construction worker. At the family's request, officials did not name the other victim.

A day after the collapse, two other bodies were recovered from a vehicle in the water. Authorities identified them as those of Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, who was from Mexico and lived in Baltimore, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, who was from Guatemala and lived in Dundalk, Maryland.
