Agritourism in North Carolina

More than just field trips and family fun, agritourism educates the public and preserves rural heritage

A goat stands among women stretching at a goat yoga event.

Agritourism – a hybrid of agriculture and tourism – refers to activities or events that take place on working farms for the enjoyment and education of the public.

Farmers increasingly rely on agritourism to support the family farm and strengthen their connection with the community by creating unique, memorable experiences for visitors throughout the year. Ultimately, agritourism is a way to immerse yourself in the beauty and splendor of North Carolina agriculture.

There are more than 1,000 farms that offer agritourism activities across North Carolina

Whether you indulge in one of our state’s wineries or craft breweries; enjoy a fun fall outing with corn mazes, hay rides and pumpkin patches; engage in a pick-your-own adventure for local foods like apples, berries and even Christmas trees ; or culminate a different kind of engagement with an on-the-farm wedding, agritourism in North Carolina offers something for everyone. We see you goat yoga gurus out there too!

While the recreational perks often play a central role for visitors, agritourism is also a vital tool for educating the public about agriculture, preserving treasured farmland, and passing along rural heritage and traditions for future generations, according to Carla Barbieri , an agritourism specialist with NC State Extension.

We spent some time with Carla to learn more about North Carolina’s agritourism offerings and the impact they make for farm families. Check out our latest On the Farm feature to find out how you can experience the best of North Carolina agriculture for yourself!

This segment was developed in conjunction with the Farms, Food and You podcast . Listen to Agritourism: Heading Out to the Farm to learn more about North Carolina agritourism and how industry leaders and farmers are planning for the fall season!

Farm visit tips.

Fall usually means corn mazes, pumpkin patches, pick-your-own produce and more ways to experience North Carolina farms, but things may look a little different this year because of COVID-19 and social distancing. Nonetheless, many farms are still holding modified events and adopting safety measures to ensure a fun, safe family outing on the farm.

Carla Barbieri recommends following all safety guidelines aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19. She also offers tips in this episode of the Farms, Food and You podcast to ensure an enjoyable visit to a farm — find a few pointers below:

  • Go open-minded. Agriculture may be a different environment than we’re used to right now, but farmers are doing everything they can to maximize your experience.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty!
  • Be respectful of any guidelines at the farm. If they ask you not to go to a certain plot, please don’t go there. It’s not a theme park or a staged production, it’s a real working farm.
  • Ask questions! One of the wonderful things about agritourism is that farmers like engaging with the public. If you ask a question, the farmer will take the time to respond.

More Agritourism Resources

  • Right now, the app covers about a third of the state, including areas in the mountains, Piedmont and coastal plain. Other areas are being added moving forward.
  • North Carolina Agritourism Resources — find farm experiences across the state for tours, pick-your-own, holiday activities, weddings and more.
  • N.C. State Fair — the annual fair that we all know and love may have been canceled in 2020, but there are still activities taking place, including opportunities to enjoy your favorite “fair food”!
  • NC State Extension Tourism — explore a wealth of information ranging from news about virtual farm tours to resources for agribusinesses responding to COVID-19. You can also see the latest tweets from @NCExtTourism .

Now that spring is finally here, it is a great time to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Recent surveys show many families plan to make leisure trips closer to home and to less crowded venues. I can’t think of a better way to spend some quality time outdoors than connecting with our local farms. That’s why I’m so excited to share some really great news…there is an app for that!

If you haven’t already, you need to check out the Visit NC Farms mobile app to help guide you through the discovery of some of the many neat places to visit. Whether it is educational farm tours, farmers markets, and U-pick operations, local shopping and dining, or even a farm stay, you can find it using this app. Once you download the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, you are literally a click away from finding endless opportunities both near and far with contact information, pictures, and directions. Some assets even share their websites and social media contact. Using cell phone technology, navigation to farms and other destinations with the app work both when WI-FI is available, and more importantly, when offline. You can search for specific items or view asset listings in broad categories like tours, animals, farm stands, products in local stores, kid-friendly, and events for inspiration.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission helped bring this idea to reality. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Robeson County Center is proud to be a partner in assisting with the growing effort behind this tool to help connect our community with our rural agribusinesses, with much appreciation to Robeson County Farm Bureau for their financial support. Agriculture is our number one industry but continues to need your support. We are in the midst of strawberry season with several local vendors awaiting your visit. Many farm stands will be opening up in the coming weeks with more fresh products to choose from. We already have close to 20 assets listed on the app for Robeson County alone with much more potential ahead. You may be surprised to learn what gems we have right here in our area. From produce, fruits, local meat, wineries, ornamental plants, recreational fishing, goat yoga, alpacas, or workshops on needle felting and felted soap, you can find it right here in Robeson County. The COVID-19 pandemic shifted consumers towards buying more local products over the last year. I hope this trend will continue as we see social, economic, and environmental benefits from supporting agritourism. So go ahead and download the app to get started. Let the fun and connection to our farms begin. If you don’t see one of your favorite venues on the app, have them contact our office. For more information visit Visit NC Farms Today .

The Visit NC Farms app is a great way to find farms and activities that are nearby or along the way if you’re taking a road trip across the state! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using this app to find new places to stop on my trips as I am working my way through my North Carolina 100 County Tour !

Take a day trip to Warren County, NC ! It’s located in the Piedmont region, a little over an hour from Raleigh. Here are suggestions for the perfect day trip!

First stop, visit a variety of local farmers and artisans at the Warren County Growers’ Association Farmers Market . You’ll find fresh produce, meat, homemade soaps, eggs, fresh cut flowers, handmade crafts, jellies, jams, and homemade baked goods!

When cantaloupes are in season, you *must* stop in Ridgeway to get the best Ridgeway cantaloupes .

Stop in Norlina for a wine tasting at Seven Springs Farms and Vineyards . Located in Norlina, this vineyard is family owned and operated on a property that features 7 naturally created springs. Enjoy time on the farm with a glass of wine!

Take a short drive into Warrenton to enjoy dinner at Robinson Ferry Restaurant & Spirits . Try the fried green tomatoes to start, which are served with pimento cheese and corn relish. You can’t go wrong with a deluxe burger and the shrimp and grits!

Explore Halifax County and Dine Locally with I’m Fixin’ To

3 North Carolina Farms to Visit and Dine featured by top NC blogger, I'm Fixin' It

Halifax County is my home county, where my grandfather was a North Carolina farmer himself. Here is the perfect itinerary for exploring the area’s agriculture.

If you’re traveling from the Triangle, be sure to stop at Aunt Ruby’s Peanuts in Enfield. This facility is family owned and operated for over 50 years. The cajun peanuts are delicious!

Head to the Roanoke Valley Farmers Market , which offers fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables, eggs and meats, local honey, ornamental plants, local artisan products and many other things.

Stop at Windy Acres Farm for fresh produce right from the fields. This family owned farm has been around for over 50 years and sells fruits and vegetables.

Finish your trip with supper at the Hen and the Hog in historic Halifax. The restaurant serves delicious meals featuring produce from local vendors and farms, including the Roanoke Valley Farmers Market and Windy Acres Farm.

Explore Surry & Yadkin Counties and Dine Locally with I’m Fixin’ To

Don’t sleep on the Western NC wineries and vineyards . The Yadkin Valley Wine Trail offers quite the experience just a short drive from the Triangle or Triad.

Enon Meadows Farm is an all-natural farm featuring seasonal vegetables, fruits, and herbs on a family-run farm.

Purple Alpaca is a 33 acre sustainable alpaca farm with farm classes, alpaca tours, apple orchards, vegetable garden, plus a farm and coffee shop. There are also 5 “glampsites” if you opt to stay on the property. Plus you get to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the alpacas graze!

Grassy Creek Vineyard  is an idyllic wine destination located in a historic dairy barn of the famous Klondike Farm. The wine tasting room is in a converted horse stable and offers cabins on the property, plus walking trails on the former dairy farm. It’s a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon trying North Carolina wines!

Old North State Winery features grapes grown both on 10 acres in eastern North Carolina plus 18 acres in Mt. Airy by Ben Webb. In order to help support the local economy in Mt. Airy, Ben opened the tasting room and restaurant in an old hardware store in downtown Mt. Airy. The restaurant features Chef’s Table Experiences featuring courses prepared with only the best local produce and paired with wine from Old North State’s wine cellar and international wines. Enjoy a special evening with Head Chef, Chris Wishart, as he creates, plates, and presents a one-of-a-kind dining experience!

Look forward to seeing more places added and visiting some new places

I like the app, but it crashes

I downloaded the app today, and thought I would use the app often. Bu no matter what itinerary I try to open, it crashes and closes the app. I have an Apple phone system 15.2. I will keep the app on my phone to see if a fix gets pushed out. If it fully functioned on my phone, I will definitely use it.

A great way to explore!

There are so many wonderful places in North Carolina that are worth visiting and exploring. This is a wonderful way to do so and get to know some authentic aspects of this great state.

What are the benefits of owning vs. renting?

Owning a home can help you build equity, offers tax deductions and fixed monthly payments, and gives you a sense of permanence. When you rent, your lease sets the price, your place isn’t really yours, and there are no tax benefits or financial freedom. There are many benefits to owning a home that you can’t get with renting.
