Episode Rating: Three of Five 'Speed' Boats

(Spoilers, obviously)

The episode begins with the question of what medium SUV would be the three presenters' choice if they absolutely had to buy one. Even with how popular they are, Jeremy Clarkson just doesn't get the appeal, saying that his Alfa Romeo Stelvio is worse in every way than the sedan it is based off of.

They met in Canada at a racetrack with their three choices of medium SUV. Clarkson in the Stelvio joined by Hammond in a Porsche Macan and James May in a Range Rover Velar.

They test the "Sport" in SUV by trying to match a BMW M3's lap time. After proving that proximity keys are the worst by losing one and bricking the BMW on the track, the three SUV's were tested. The Alfa was 6 seconds faster than the second place Porsche, but was still around 20 seconds slower than the M3.

Next up was testing the "Utility" portion by seeing how many dogs could fit in the back. The total ended up being zero for all three cars since the electronic tailgates wouldn't close.

So now, all that was left was to try to be a better "vehicle" than a horse. The three complete a barrel race after a horse and rider set the benchmark time. The Porsche's AWD couldn't handle the dirt and went into limp mode. The Range Rover got lost in its own dust, thanks to its driver. The Alfa has a useless electric handbrake and then went into limp mode with the same AWD issues as the Porsche. All three were much slower than the horse.

Conversation Street

A very good analogy was made about the proliferation of SUVs. When faced with a larger vehicle on the road, drivers tend to assume the larger vehicle is always safer. In this way, SUVs came to be like Nukes. If others on the road have them, you'd better get one too. It becomes a safety arms race until everyone is driving around in SUVs.

Tesla Model X Review

Back when Top Gear reviewed the original Tesla Roadster, Tesla sued Clarkson. This is why Jeremy won't touch them anymore. However, with Tesla gaining popularity, Jeremy wanted to give them another shot. Hoping that the Model X would be an SUV someone might actually want, he took a look.

Right off the bat, Jeremy enjoys the Easter eggs, autopilot and the 'summon mode.' It is quiet to drive, handles well for its weight, and can embarrass an Audi R8 in a drag race. It even matched a 5.0 Ford Mustang around their test track.

On the negative side, well, we aren't sure. Because the team of lawyers that Jeremy crammed in the Model X with him kept making sure he didn't step on Tesla's toes with overly critical opinions.

Celebrity F-Off

This episode, they aim to find out who is the fastest golfing enthusiast, so they have on Rory McIlroy and Paris Hilton. While the golf connection is a bit of a stretch, both have impressive car collections. The collections seem to be more about spending money than an actual enthusiasm for cars. For example, Paris Hilton has a Lexus LFA that she likes because of the attention it brings.

Luckily for McIlroy, he put in a better time than Paris Hilton by 4 seconds, though she was not as bad behind the wheel as one might suspect from her LFA story.

SUV Showdown

To use their SUV's like normal people would, instead of at the track or rodeo, the three are told to tow boats with their SUVs to the finish line near a lake. Jeremy however, now has a Ford Raptor. That is because his Alfa can't tow anything, because a trailer hitch can't be installed because of the way the exhaust is routed. It is basically an automotive orienteering race while towing boats.

As the Raptor climbs and the Porsche's awd began to fail, May finally decides to set off. Immediately, Jeremy is smitten with his Raptor's abilities and he makes it to the lake. Meanwhile, May's Range Rover is too civilized to handle going off road. Hammond's Porsche can't quite do what the Raptor can, so he is forced to find another way around a lake to the finish line. He finds a longer, but smoother and faster route.

Since the instructions said nothing about bringing the car, May decided to take his boat across the lake. May by water, Clarkson by brute force, and Hammond by speed all close in on the finish line, with Clarkson winning out.

However, his boat is gone, not to mention he isn't in his original SUV. And May's boat is sinking out from under him as he tries to make it to shore. Hammond gets the win here if we were in charge.

Impressions

The presenters, and car enthusiasts in general, have made their issues with SUV's well known, but the show still found a way to make it interesting. Seeing Jeremy review the Tesla Model X with a cadre of Lawyers was a good way of pointing out the absurdity of suing a beloved car reviewer, as they will usually have the last laugh. Paris Hilton and Rory McIlroy added nothing to the episode, which really dragged down the overall rating of the episode.

Anyone catch this weeks episode? (Episode 10) Been waiting to see the Raptor in action ever since the teaser. Really fun to see Jeremy trashing it and really loving the truck. Of course you have him backup with a boat and not use the trailer backup assist (Staged I'm sure).  

It wasn't bad but I was hoping for a better test than just that. Hopefully they'll have another test down the road. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

They kept showing it in the promo so I was hoping they would do an actual feature on it. At least they did something with it.

Yeh their 4x4 systems gave up the ghost right away on that macan and alpha! He did hit that raptor pretty hard twice in a deep ditch

As others here have mentioned, I was a bit disappointed it wasn't a feature. I had actually given up hope when I saw the trailer and it wasn't in it at all. Judging by the reddit thread on the episode, everyone was very impressed with the Raptor, and considering how rough Jeremy is with vehicles (just look at his approach angles - yikes) the Raptor did fantastic. Still, as cool as it was I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. Hopefully he'll do another Sunday Times Review on the Gen 2, like he did on the Velociraptor . I'm also hoping we get a surprise segment on it during the mini special next week. We shall see. If only one of the local ranches would let me do a barrel race in my truck...bet I could get close to the horse's time...whatcha think? Baja 4H locked or Baja 2H? I'm thinking the former...  

Granted its a super car but they did a 2nd feature of the Ford GT. 2nd episode was road from NYC to Buffalo then I think it was Episode 8 was on track. Maybe they'll do another segment on it.

2024 Ford Ranger and 405-horsepower Ranger Raptor revealed

V6 is newly offered for the u.s. ranger, and the beefed-up raptor gets a bigger one.

The next-generation U.S.-market Ford Ranger has arrived. The 2024 model marks the first comprehensive update since the first midsize Ranger rolled off the line in the United States in 2018, and even that model was only new to us; the rest of the world got it way back in 2011. And while it wasn't for nearly as long, this new Ranger was delayed coming this way too. The base truck debuted way back in 2021 and the global Raptor was shown more than a year ago . The Ranger crossed the pond virtually unchanged, but our Raptor gets quite a bit more punch than the global version — the better to keep up with its smaller sibling, the Bronco . 

The outgoing American Ranger was offered with just one engine. That 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder returns with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, but this time around it's joined by an available upgrade: A 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 pushing 315 hp and 400 lb-ft. That's in addition to the tuned-up, 3.0-liter unit offered in the Raptor, which we'll detail below. Both engines will be mated to Ford's 10-speed automatic and available with optional shift-on-the-fly 4WD. The interior also received an overhaul. At its center is a new infotainment system, available with two screens: 10.1 or 12 inches. It's powered by Ford's Sync 4A .

Same fundamentals

The 2024 Ranger has grown slightly, but its general footprint remains about the same. SuperCrew is the only body style, and only one bed length (5') is offered.  The V6 may seem tempting for heavier-duty work, but it's actually the 2.3-liter engine that gets you the most trailering. A 4x2 paired with the Trailer Tow package gets you 1,805 pounds of total payload capacity (down 100 pounds from '23) and 7,500 pounds of trailering (carry-over). The four- and six-cylinder diesel options offered overseas did not make the trip over. 

The Ranger Raptor isn't new, but its U.S.-market availability is. Ours is a little spicier than the one offered overseas to boot. While it's not quite as punchy as the 418-horsepower Bronco Raptor, it does make a respectable (or best-in-class, as Ford would put it) 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Coupled with standard 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, 33-inch BFGoodrich KO3s, a beefed-up frame, front and rear electronic locking differentials, upgraded drive modes, trick Fox Live Valve shocks and a Watts-link rear suspension, it's fit to rule its (Ford's words again) class of one.

Ford's boast isn't baseless. The midsize pickup segment has gotten hot in recent years, but only Ford has really dared to turn up the wick. The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon/Mojave and GM's crawl-ready ZR2 and AT4X are certainly fun in their way, but none of them has a twin-turbo six thrumming beneath its sheetmetal. The Raptor gets 10.7 inches of ground clearance and offers approach, departure and breakover angles of 33, 26.4 and 24.2 degrees, respectively. This capability comes at a cost, however, as the Raptor's maximum payload capacity drops to just 1,411 pounds and max towing to 5,510 pounds. Not bad for a rabid little runabout. 

As with most major model updates, pricing has increased. This time the jump is more notable with the disappearance of the extended-cab version discontinued. The base 2024 Ranger now starts at $34,160 including the $1,595 destination charge. That's a $5,265 increase over the old extended-cab Ranger, and $3,080 more than the crew-cab version. The Raptor is of course far more expensive than the other Rangers starting at $56,960. That makes it close to $20,000 less than an F-150 Raptor , and almost $30,000 less than a Bronco Raptor.

Video: Richard Hammond Reviews The New Ford Ranger Raptor

Richard Hammond is known to be a secret American, with The Grand Tour often referring back to the inside joke , so it’s only right that he gets to produce a video review on the new Ford Ranger Raptor for DriveTribe.

H explains how he’s having a mid-life crisis, before giving a (sort of) in-depth review, and gorgeously shot video on the truck. It has to be noted that Ford is sponsoring the video, so take from that what you will – this may not be a completely unbiased review.

The Grand Tour presenter introduces the car and starts a journey to a ‘conference’ with a group of colleagues. Along the way he spouts jokes and takes a shortcut across some averagely bumpy terrain.

To be honest, this whole thing feels like a sellout. We understand that DriveTribe is under a bit of financial strain, but giving obviously biased reviews go against everything we love about Top Gear and The Grand Tour.

What do you think? The video was enjoyable, but very obviously an ad for Ford. Meh.

So what if it was an ad? It was funny and had that Top Gear/Grand Tour cheese factor we all love. The first line alone was great “I’m Richard Hammond, and I’m having a mid-life crisis.” Brilliant!

Surprised at this: it might be a good vehicle but impossible to take seriously due to the fact it’s sponsored by the manufacturer. I used to think their reviews were impartial because there were no commercials on BBC (Top Gear) or Amazon (Grand Tour.)

How wrong could I be?

Bloody clever car: it managed to change its wheeled from black to silver whilst driving to the meeting – Come on guys, it must have cost you a fortune to get Hammond and then you make a stupid continuity error!

3/10 – Cheesy and poorly executed

Why can’t “Drive Tribe” be turned into a full time show like Top Gear or Grand Tour?? ????

Eg have it on Amazon prime or mainstream tv? ????

Ads are the reality of the internet. Running stuff isn’t free. And of all the ads out there were as entertaining as this, I would actually watch them.

Seriously. How many people would be on the Internet if they had to PAY for everything?
