Dior's Revamped Diorshow Eye Shadow Palettes Truly Are the Height of Luxury

I approach eye shadow the same way I do dating... that is to say: with unrealistically high standards. Just like I consider if someone I'm talking to is communicative, funny, and — I'll be honest — hot enough for me, I think a lot about an eye shadow's consistency, color payoff, and packaging before committing myself to it. Many have come and gone in both departments (far more eye shadows than romantic prospects), but every once in a while something good comes along and I just can't let it go. This month, as Dior relaunches its iconic Diorshow 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palettes , I might have found a new longterm partner.

On September 1, the classic range of eye shadow palettes will re-enter society with a revamped formula that's far creamier than the original, thanks to the addition of aloe vera and pine oil. There's also an entirely new shade selection inspired by famous Dior runway looks . 

Up until now, the palettes have come in 12 different iterations featuring matte and satin finishes. This time around, they'll be available in 14 different color assortments with six types of finishes — matte, satin, pearl, glitter, metallic, and highlighter. Dior sent me four of the new palettes (Denim, Jungle, Grand Bal, Rouge Trafalgar), which I've been playing around with for the past few weeks. They've unsurprisingly defied my expectations at every turn (especially my personal favorite, Rouge Trafalgar).

First thing's first: this formula . I know swatches aren't always the best way to determine a product's quality, but I fell for this formula at the very first swipe of my finger. Regardless of each shadow's finish and color, they all feel buttery to the touch and deliver full opacity without much effort. 

And Dior managed to achieve that with virtually no fallout; you can dip whatever brush you want into these eye shadows and that powder will stay exactly where it belongs. And that makes creating different eye looks easier than usual because you have complete control over each shade's placement.

And while I'm on the subject of shades, let me rave for a second about these palettes' very intentional color selections. Within each palette, there are no two shades that don't go well together — in fact, you could probably pick a few random shades from different palettes and still get a flattering combination. I don't get overwhelmed by choices when starting a look with a 5 Couleurs Couture Eye Shadow Palettes because I can just hone in on one shade and use the rest to build it from there. 

Some people, on the other hand, might not think five shades are enough for a single eye shadow palette — but in order to make up for a lack of quantity, Dior packed all 14 eye palettes with lots of different finishes so you can create tons of dimension with very few shadows.

As Dior creative and image director Peter Philips tells Allure , that was a very intentional choice. Being a runway and editorial makeup artist, he provided all the creative input the brand's product developers needed to make palettes that could work in both an everyday and professional context. 

"The different finishes are perfectly compatible in color as well as texture," he explains. "When you use the top two shades in combination with the center shade, you can do the perfect day look; You can then create a beautiful evening look by adding depth with the two bottom shades."

This all goes without saying that these compacts are just small enough to fit comfortably in the size of my hand (and the mirrors within are excellent for perfecting small details). I can easily chuck one in even my smallest purse, making them perfect for socially distanced getaways, hangouts, Zoom calls , and everything between.

And what better time is there to get back into eye makeup? With stress looming from every direction and the harsh reality of having to wear face coverings a lot of the time, a fun new product can be just the thing to get the creative juices flowing and get a much-needed boost of confidence.
