Visiting Kolkata ? Have a few hours to spare ?

Take a walk. Kolkata has something and a bit more to offer to everyone. Savour street foods or visit the artisans workshops. Immerse into the seemingly chaotic open bazaars or serene churches. Walk through centuries old cemeteries or modern IT sectors. Browse books at College Street and sip coffee at Coffee House. Ride trams, hand-pulled rickshaws or zip through traffic in auto-rickshaws. Lazily stroll through narrow lanes or observe the activities around a busy mandir. Kolkata promises to be a treat for every senses and surely a delight for experience seekers.

Have a camera ? Love to shoot ?

Kolkata is photographer's delight. If you love street photography or if you are fascinated by architecture, you just cannot give this vibrant city a miss. Take a walk discussing the techy stuff as you capture the various moods and interests that the city slowly reveals.

Colonial Calcutta

Calcutta had once the distinction of being the second city of the mighty British Empire and the first capital of British india (1773-1911). Tank Square (Lal Dighi) area is said to have the largest concentration of colonial building. Follow Footsteps under the shadows of towering church spires, elegant clock towers and magnificent domes, stopping frequently to admire the intricate stucco works, beautifully curved pillars, colossal windows, decorated gateways and elegant figures of terraced roofs and finally admire the reflection of the vintage pieces on Tank Square.

On weekends and holidays this area is comparatively serene and devoid of the general hustle and bustle associated with Kolkata.

Testimonials

The places that you escorted us to were totally fascinating, and your intelligent, knowledgeable descriptions were very much appreciated. You gave us most interesting angles and aspects for some excellent photos, and, most importantly, gave us space to pursue our own interests without pressuring us.

- David from Melbourne

"Your photo tours allowed me to get to know Kolkata better and made it easier for me to take photos. I highly recommend your photo tours to any one who wants a more in depth understanding of the city."

- Mary, a photography enthusiast from Toronto

"The photowalks I did with you were fantastic because you made me discover some parts of Kolkata which I probably would not have enjoyed as much without your explanations! It was a real bliss to wander in the streets of the City of Joy with you!"

- Guillaume Desachy

"We had a good time in Calcutta and without your guidance we would have seen very little. In fact I found wandering around the back streets rewarding although clearly the Ghats, flower market tunnel and the mosque also gave some interesting light."

 bow barracks to burrabazar.

calcutta photo tours

Our city has witnessed many more cultures in its past than most others would even in this globalised present. Here we will trace for you the origins and remains of the varied communities that hung their boots and called Calcutta home. Lets check out why Chinese breakfast still rules Tiretta Bazar, where the Parsis are dwindling in numbers with each passing day and how the Armenians gave the city its oldest surviving Christian church while we pass the Anglo-Indians, the Muslims, the Marwaris, the Biharis and many more that made this city a great melting pot of diverse cultures. This is one of our most popular tours and highly recommended to get an idea of the melting pot that Calcutta is.

Here, we will traverse down this hugely famous as well as infamous promenade and pay homage to the pleasure capital of the British empire. So, come with us as we take you from one end of the street to the other taking in restaurants, watering holes, hotels, the churches, colleges, stately homes and the burial grounds. Whew! The Star Still Shines / Black Town Walk

 sovabazar.

The ever-vital hub of traditional Bengali culture, ‘the natives’ area’, Sovabazar is all this and much more. This area contains a fascinatingly cosmopolitan blend of the seemingly incongruous architectural forms (from Islamic to Baroque, from Victorian to Bengali) which made up the old world dwellings of the city’s wealthier Bengalis. No one who wishes to savor the authentic flavor of Bengali culture and cuisine can afford to miss out on this walk.

Join us to learn much more about life in Black Town, to get a glimpse of this time warp called Bengali Calcutta.

Cabin Food Walk

 indian coffee house and around.

It is something that has been known for a while and a belief we at Calcutta Walks strongly stand by, that food is one of the strongest connects you can have with any city. Any cuisine with its varied flavours, common ingredients and distinct taste adds a unique identity to the character of a place. Calcutta too has its incredible tastes – but what makes her’s so amazing is the variety of flavours that have emerged because of the plethora of influences that she has merged in herself. In an endeavour to provide a holistic experience of the city to those who are more than tourists, Calcutta Walks has come up with its unique Cabin Food Walk. In this we take you through all the hole in the wall eateries that dot old Calcutta where everyone from revolutionaries to literati have gathered to satiate their hunger for food and flock. So join us to eat from the palette that has served many a poet, writer, activist, footballer, filmmaker, photographer, et al.
