It is scarcely two years since everything suddenly went quiet, and we all found ourselves living in a "Silent World". For Wolfgang Haffner, the most prominent German drummer of our time, things came to a particularly abrupt halt, not least because his regular schedule is so packed and his habitual work-rate is so prolific. He is normally travelling across all five continents, playing with stellar artists from all kinds of genres; his own exceptional craft as a drummer is to be heard on no fewer than 400 albums. Fortunately, however, Haffner has always considered himself to be at least as much a composer as he is a drummer, so once he had absorbed the initial shock of being grounded at home…taken long walks...watched a lot of TV...it was completely natural that he should devote himself to writing music. And, for once, he wasn’t having to fit it in between other commitments, but could set about it in a concentrated way. "In the normal course of things, everything I do comes with a built-in sense of urgency to get it done and over with. But now, thrown entirely onto my own resources, and without any background noise to distract me, I was able to ask myself what I actually wanted to do. What my own personal imprint looks like." It is logical, therefore, that the album which has resulted from this unique time should be called "Silent World".

It will especially delight fans who love to hear Haffner on his own terms. This dreamer in sound is able to combine groove and bounce with an extravagant sound palette, plus the power of simple melodies, and to bring it all together in a way which is unmistakably his. And he always creates a special kind of tension. In recent times, Haffner has drawn inspiration from external sources: In his "Kind of" trilogy, he dealt with cool jazz, the tango and the music of the country he adopted for a time as his home, Spain; in his "Dream Band", his guests contributed many pieces and influences. Now, however, he has concentrated on his own sound world once more. This excursion into it is even more radical than "Shapes", "Round Silence" or "Heart of the Matter", albums which put down the markers to define his highly individual sound.

"Silent World" is about the essentials of being human, a message which Haffner signals clearly with concise track titles such as "The Peace Inside", "Hope" or "Belief". Sometimes we’re in the world of hymns, sometimes of dreams, but there is always a melody to be grasped and a pulse to be felt, and those points of reference give a basis for the listener to focus and to enjoy the music thoroughly.

Less is often more here, and it was precisely this sense of clarity and simplicity that Haffner knew he could achieve in the studio. To this purpose he gathered a nucleus of kindred spirits around him: his long-time companion on the bass, Thomas Stieger; his closest confidant from recent years, Simon Oslender, whose total mastery of grand piano, keyboards and organ is something very rare. His newest discovery is Alma Naidu: she deploys her naturally angelic timbre like an instrumental voice, and she is to be heard on four tracks. Finally there is the innovative trumpeter Sebastian Studnitzky; he has been a regular feature of Haffner's most deeply personal music.

Together with Haffner, these musicians give us the foundations over which some of the drummer’s more illustrious friends are able to make their star quality shine. The opening number "Here and Now" builds inexorably, with saxophonist Bill Evans playing some jubilant soprano. On "The Peace Inside", an ethereal flugelhorn meditation by Till Brönner takes centre stage. On "Rise and Fall" Nils Landgren gives us his uniquely lyrical trombone sound. For the gently wafting "Faro", Sting guitarist Dominic Miller contributes a filigree acoustic guitar solo. All of the tracks except "Belief" and "Faro" come from Haffner's most recent burst of compositional activity. "Faro" is from the sessions for "Heart of the Matter". “Whereas it felt unfinished to me at that time," Haffner explains, "it now fits perfectly into this project."

What started as a labour of love has ended up as a concept album with a thread running through it. Haffner elaborates: "I wanted to have a continuous flow. I wrote a total of eighteen pieces, and these nine are the ones which fit together the best, without any repeats or breaks in the mood." In other words, "Silent World" has a special strength about it which comes from calm. And an irresistible progression from "Here and Now" all the way through to "Forever and Ever", the latter a minimalist finale with just piano and bass, a lovely moment avoiding any portentous heaviness.

Rather than choosing to respond to challenging times by burying his head in the sand, Wolfgang Haffner has continued to create and to develop. "The album is about having a commitment to life," he says, "and a return to the origins." "Silent World" is the antidote for a world which is in the process of speeding up again, and is doing so far too fast.

Let’s first hear what others have to say: Wolfgang Haffner, Germany's “best” ( Die Welt ), “coolest” ( ttt , ARD ), “most important drummer of his generation” ( SZ ) is finally going on tour again. Accompanying him will be his Magic Band, featuring Alma Naidu, the award-winning young jazz singer from Munich, whose debut album Haffner produced. In addition to the long-time members of his trio, Simon Oslender on keyboards and Thomas Stieger on bass, the celebrated Berlin-based trumpeter Sebastian Studnitzky will also be joining the team. Haffner still belongs to the old school: he makes, in his own words: "music for the heart." And in this way has been reaching his audiences for decades.

Pandemic lockdowns continue to influence the music we’re hearing in 2023. Silent World contains several compositions that drummer and composer Wolfgang Haffner wrote at that time.

Given the bleak circumstances in which the music came about, there is a wonderfully upbeat and life-affirming nature to the tracks. Indeed, as Haffner himself writes: “The album is about a commitment to life and a return to the origins.”

Working with some hugely talented musicians, he has produced a crisp, engaging album, built around simplicity and clarity that really engages the listener right the way through. Hear And Now is a brisk, optimistic opener, with Bill Evans leading things on soprano sax and taking the theme to soaring heights.

Haffner is a wonderful drummer, always at the heart of the music with his intricate but accessible rhythms; it’s like hearing an finely tuned mechanism ticking away. He often takes the music in unexpected directions, most notably on the haunting, moody La Casa, which opens with a sweep of Studnitzky’s trumpet and vocals from Alma Naidu, with Haffner building a layered, trance-like rhythm to develop the tension as the song develops. It’s beautifully controlled, dramatic and captivating.

Elsewhere, ACT stalwarts like Nils Landgren and Till Bronner add a touch of magic to the tracks on which they feature. Overall, Silent World proves again that from the most testing of circumstances, the most inspirational creativity can emerge. A standout album so early in 2023.

Wolfgang Haffner Dream Band

German drummer Wolfgang Haffner makes no bones about his retro instincts, drawing on his strengths as leader-composer-dreamer to summon up an old-schooled, funk-basted jazz sound without apology. His Dream Band, the range and power of which is well captured on this two-disc live set from 2021, is clearly a talent-fortified unit, with Americans Randy Brecker and saxist Bill Evans and multiple personality Swede Nils Landgren up front.

Haffner penned most of the 20 tunes here, with Evans’ “Soulbop” and Brecker’s “The Dipshit” also in the mix. Cover-wise, Haffner is a careful curator, logically tapping the soul-jazz legacy of Nat Adderley’s “Walk Tall” and “Sweet Emma.” Landgren puts in an aptly understated vocal on Brenda Russell’s pop-soul tune “Get Here.” Miles Davis’ simple, iconic riff-based “Jean Pierre” is slyly alluded to. Other historical points of reference filter through the Dream Band’s agenda, almost as if the operative dream is a nostalgic reverie for fusion-esque sounds of old. “Star” revolves around a deceptively simple theme and dynamically morphing fast-city groove bowing to Joe Zawinul’s influence. Things slide over into a passage nodding to In A Silent Way , albeit more in a slick way than with the original’s organic looseness. Chick Corea’s “Spain” and other Spanish-tinged fusion manners figure into Haffner’s “Tres Hermanos,” a fine showcase for bassist Thomas Stieger.

The varied groove-fest comes to a lovely sigh of a finale, with Haffner’s semi-lullaby “Silent Way,” in his silent way.

Vom Träumer zum Magier: Wolfgang Haffner, „bester“ (Die Welt), „coolster“ (ARD ttt), sogar „wichtigster Drummer seiner Generation“ (SZ), geht nach den Erfolgen seiner „Dream Band“, deren „Live in Concert“ soeben auch als Album Triumphe feiert, 2023 mit seiner persönlichen „Magic Band“ auf Tour. Schon die Besetzung spricht dabei wieder für sich. Doch während Haffner mit seiner Traumformation internationale Allstars wie Randy Brecker, Bill Evans oder Nils Landgren präsentierte, sorgen jetzt einheimische Jazzstars für musikalische Magie. Allen voran Alma Naidu, die preisgekrönte junge Jazzsängerin aus München, deren Debütalbum Haffner produziert hat. Neben den langjährigen Mitgliedern seines Trios, Simon Oslender an Tasteninstrumenten und Thomas Stieger am Bass, ist außerdem der gefeierte Berliner Trompeter Sebastian Studnitzky mit von der Partie. Mit Letzterem verbindet Haffner eine bald sechzehnjährige instrumentale Freundschaft, dokumentiert auf etlichen seiner siebzehn Alben als Bandleader, etwa „Kind of Spain“ oder auch „Round Silence“. Wie passend, dass sie jetzt gemeinsam auf „Silent World Tour“ gehen.

Wolfgang Haffner ist ein musikalisches Allround-Talent. Ein Leader, der gerne begleitet. Ein Instrumentalist, der gerne komponiert. Ein Meister der Zwischentöne am Schlagzeug, dem das Publikum wichtig ist und dem es darauf ankommt, „Musik fürs Herz“ zu spielen, wie er selbst sagt. Und das seit er mit 18 Jahren Profi-Musiker geworden ist, immerhin gleich in den Bands von Jazz-Ikone Albert Mangelsdorff und dem legendären Liedermacher Konstantin Wecker. In den Jahren darauf trommelte er sich über einen Stammplatz in Klaus Doldingers Passport oder Auftritte mit Soul-Diva Chaka Khan, etwa beim Montreux Jazz Festival, mit Thomas Quasthoff, den Fantastischen Vier, Pat Metheny oder der Nils Landgren Funk Unit in den Jazz- und Soul-Olymp. Inzwischen 56 und nach längerem Ibiza-Aufenthalt zurück in Nürnberg, ist Haffner mittlerweile auf über 400 Albumproduktionen zu hören – und gilt international als der erfolgreichste deutsche Drummer.

Zu Wolfgang Haffners gutem Ruf trägt auch bei, wie aktiv und agil er als Produzent ist, etwa für Mezzoforte oder Max Mutzke. Gleich zwei Mitglieder seiner neuen Magic Band sind schon in den Genuss des Haffnerschen Produktionstalents gekommen. Im Februar erschien „Alma“, das umjubelte, von ihm produzierte Debütalbum der in Mü̈nchen lebenden Jazzsängerin Alma Naidu. Die ehemalige Studentin der britischen Vocal-Jazz-Koriphäe Norma Winstone an der Londoner Royal Academy of Music und Gewinnerin des „BMW World Young Artist Jazz Award“, stieg damit umgehend in die Top 10 der Deutschen Jazzcharts ein. Dass die 25-jährige „eines der größten Gesangstalente der Republik“ (Süddeutsche Zeitung) mit einer „zartelegischen, wunderschön klaren und absolut intonationssicheren Stimme“ (Jazzthing) ist, stellt sie auch live unter Beweis. Nur zwei Monate nach Alma Naidus Debüt erschien das Album „Peace of Mind“ des 24-jährigen Keyboarders Simon Oslender, bei dem Wolfgang Haffner ebenfalls als Drummer und Produzent seine Hände im Spiel hatte.

Oslender, ein Rising Star der europäischen Jazzszene, bezeichnet Haffner als seinen „Mentor“ und erkennt ihn als „viel jünger, als auf dem Papier steht, (…) kombiniert mit einer Liebe zur Musik, die über alles hinwegreicht.“ Gemeinsam mit dem Bassisten Thomas Stieger, einem Weltklasse-Musiker Jahrgang 1986, der gekonnt zwischen den Welten des Jazz, Pop und Soul wandert, spielt Oslender auch im Wolfgang Haffner Trio – und die drei bilden hier deutlich mehr als nur die Rhythm Section. Näher an Haffners Jahrgang ist Sebastian Studnitzky, Multiinstrumentalist, XJAZZ!-Festival- und Labelbetreiber, selbst Leader zahlreicher, immer wieder preisgekrönter Bands und Musiker für Jazzanova oder Nightmares on Wax. In der Magic Band spielt der 50-jährige Trompete, mit einem Sound zwischen gehauchtem Gefühl und eruptiver Kraft, der seine Liebe zu Miles Davis, klassischen Klangwelten und modernen elektronischen Sounds gleichermaßen reflektiert.

Musik, besonders live und von solch überragenden Musikern gespielt, hat immer auch etwas Magisches. Dass dabei nicht nur dem Anfang ein Zauber innewohnt, wie schon Hermann Hesse wusste, sondern diese Magie den ganzen Konzertabend über immer weiter währt und wächst, dafür stehen alle fünf Mitglieder dieser neu formierten „Magic Band“. Gemeinsam erschaffen und erleben sie den Haffner Sound, diese einzigartige und unverkennbare Kombination von gepflegtem Groove, klangschönen Melodien und einem tiefen Gespür für Atmosphäre und musikalische Stimmungen. Dass sie ihrem druckvollen und dynamischen Programm den Titel „Silent World“ gegeben haben, kann man auch mit einem Zitat von Claude Debussy verstehen: „Musik ist die Stille zwischen den Tönen“. Vielleicht hat es aber auch mit den stillen Momenten der Auftritte der „Wolfgang Haffner Magic Band“ zu tun – im Ausklang eines Stücks zum Beispiel, kurz bevor der Applaus losbricht. (Pressetext)
