In this hour-long boat tour, we'll enjoy a pleasant journey while contemplating these curious rock formations. But what makes this place so special? Flysch has been a very important geological reference point for more than 50 years, as its composition provides us with information about the formation of our planet more than 50 million years ago. Fascinating, right?

Visitors Guide To The Zumaia Flysch

The Zumaia Flysch, located in the Basque Country of Northern Spain, is a spectacular geological formation renowned for its stunning cliff faces and stratified rock layers.

Not only is it simply stunning to look at, this natural marvel is a key site for geological research, offering insights into millions of years of Earth’s history.

The area’s unique geological characteristics make it an invaluable resource for understanding the processes that have shaped our planet.

A visit to the Zumaia Flysch is one of the top things to do on a trip to Zumaia . In the article below, we’ll run through what makes this place so special and how to get the most out of your trip!

Things to know about the Zumaia Flysch

Before we walk you through the best ways to visit the flysch, it’s worth understanding a little bit more about it.

1. Formation and Geological History

The Zumaia Flysch is characterised by its alternating hard and soft rock layers, formed over millions of years. These layers, or “flysch”, are a result of sediment accumulation in deep marine environments, followed by compression and uplift.

The visible strata (or lines of rock) provide a chronological record of geological events. Unbelievably this covers everything from ancient climate changes to mass extinctions!

You can learn more about flysch formation here .

2. Significance in Earth’s History

The Zumaia Flysch is not just a geological spectacle but a window into Earth’s past. It played a crucial role in the field of stratigraphy, helping scientists decode Earth’s geological history.

The unique features of Zumaia Flysch, such as its continuous and well-preserved rock layers, make it an exceptional site for studying past geological and environmental changes

Notably, it has provided critical evidence about the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary and mass extinction events.

Ongoing research projects continue to uncover new insights into Earth’s past. Every year the site attracted not just thousands of tourists, but international scholars from all over the world.

3. The site has been used in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones

It’s fair to say that (much like San Juan de Gaztelugatxe) the popularity of the Zumaia Flysch exploded following its inclusion in the site in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones.

Itzurun Beach and San Juan de Gaztelugatxe combine in the series to form Drangonstone, the ancestral home of Daenerys Targaryen.

It’s not hard to see why the directors chose this spot. They combine to create an unworldly island with flying dragons. The scene below is probably the most epic!

Visiting the Flysch

Now you know a little bit more about the flysch, you’re probably dying to go and visit.

You can easily complete a self-guided visit to the flysch. Alongside the information below, there are plenty of signs at points of interest which explain more about the rock formations.

It’s also worth paying a visit to the Algorri Interpretation Centre. Here you can find additional  information to get a better understanding of this natural marvel.

Playa de Itzurun

One of the best places to explore the flysch formations is from the central beach, Playa de Itzurun which is just a short walk from the centre of Zumaia.

It’s worth visiting during low tide so you can really take in all of the natural beauty. You can get really up and close to the rock formations.

Check the views from Ermita de San Telmo

Sitting on the cliff overlooking Playa de Itzurun, you’ll notice the hermitage dedicated to San Telmo, the sailor’s saint, dating back to 1540.

The location of Ermita de San Telmo, is a great reference point as it rewards you with incredible views of the UNESCO Geopark landscape!

This spot has become even more famous after the wedding scene in the Spanish hit film “Ocho Apellidos Vascos” was filmed here!

Whilst the first two spots are stunning, the view from Algori is perhaps my favourite place to enjoy the flysch. There’s something about the darker red rock that looks even more impressive.

Again, it’s worth visiting during low tide so you can Walk down to the beach and get a real up close look.

Another good way to take in the full beauty of the flysch is to hike a little around the coastline.

I’d personally recommend the“Way of St James” track amongst all the short hikes around the flysch (the route in red on the map below).

Following this route, you’ll cover most of the spots above and have a different perspective of the flysch from higher up.

Guided Tours

Last but not least, another way to explore the flysch is to take a guided tour . Guided tours offer in-depth insights into the geological significance of the area.

There are different types of tours available, from Game of Throne tours to trips from San Sebastian which include more stops on the way.

Boat tours are also popular, offering a different perspective of the rock formations.

You can check out all the options and availability here .

FAQs about Zumaia Flysch

Below we’ve answered some of the most common FAQs we’ve received about the flysch in Zumaia.

The Flysch of Zumaia is a remarkable geological formation found along the coast of Zumaia in northern Spain.  It is famous for its distinct layers of sedimentary rock that have accumulated over millions of years. These layers contain a treasure trove of geological information, essentially serving as a time capsule of Earth’s past.

The Zumaia Flysch’s age is estimated to be around 50 million years old, tracing its origins back to the Eocene epoch.  During this period, the area that is now Zumaia was submerged under the sea, and the sediments gradually accumulated, layer by layer, forming the remarkable geological structure we see today.

The Zumaia Flysch measures around 8 kilometres (about 5 miles) in total along the coastline of Zumaia towards Deba.

Zumaia: What to see and do

' src=

Just 31 kilometers from San Sebastian , in the heart of the Urola-Costa region of Gipuzkoa, is Zumaia. It is a town of about 9,700 inhabitants that has become one of the most touristic of all the Basque Country. Because it offers endless options for all kinds of visitors, as it has mountains, beaches, an interesting architectural heritage, rich gastronomy…

Do you dare to discover what you should not miss if you visit it and even what activities to do there? Here is our humble guide.

What to see in Zumaia

Anyone who wants to visit Zumaia should know that they will have to dedicate some time to it, because there are many things to know in it. However, among the most significant we highlight the following:

1. Old town

The first and most important thing to do in this town is, without a doubt, to take a walk through its historic center, of medieval origin. It is one of the most picturesque in the area and it includes some special buildings. Without forgetting, of course, that it is formed by a network of steep, unique and narrow streets that give it an undeniable attraction. And to this also contributes the set of houses that allow to know the local architecture.

2. Parish Church of San Pedro Apostle

From the 13th century is this temple of Gothic origin that has become one of the most important of Zumaia. In this place stands out in a special way its altarpiece of Juan de Antxiea. In addition, it has the singularity that nothing more to see it gives the sensation of being in front of a fortress more than of a religious building.

It has a single nave of 30 meters long and inside the arches of the entrance of its side chapels and the Gothic image of the Virgin and Child stand out in the same way.

The seafaring essence of this Basque town is another of its hallmarks. For this reason, we recommend that you do not miss the opportunity to know this other space, which is basically already taken by what are recreational boats.

Of course, you will also be able to admire traditional fishing boats and even typical houses. Of course, you will have the opportunity to spend as much time as you want to see them because in the port there are catering establishments to have a drink or even eat while watching the life in that one.

boat trip zumaia

There are many places that you should not miss in Zumaia, but, without a doubt, one of the most important is this one, of great national and international recognition. It is a geological phenomenon that is a consequence of the action of the wind and the sea on the rocks.

There is a simple route to discover it, see it and admire it, which will also give you the chance to fall in love with the breathtaking views of the area.

Another option is to take a boat trip that allows you to enjoy its beauty in all its splendor from the sea.

5. Hermitage of San Telmo

In this list of places to see in this Basque town we can not fail to include this other religious building that a few years ago became very well known throughout the country. Because the wedding scene of the famous movie Ocho apellidos vascos (2014) was filmed there.

It is located on the aforementioned flysch and Itzurun beach, is dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and dates from the sixteenth century. It is especially noteworthy for its rococo altarpiece.

6. Ubillos Palace

Of course, it goes without saying that you should also take advantage of your stay in this town to discover this palace, which dates back to the 16th century. Apparently, at first it was only a defensive tower to which later was added the body that it has today. At present it serves as the headquarters of the School of Music.

6. Geopark of the Basque Coast

As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, Zumaia is also nature. For this reason, you should not miss the opportunity to discover this natural enclave that runs between the town, Mutriku and Deba. In it you will be able to admire the aforementioned flyschs and cliffs as well as plant and animal wealth.

This park is listed as a UNESCO World Geopark.

8. Olazábal Palace

This other historic building dates back to the 17th century and is named after Juan de Olazábal, who was a member of the Inquisition and secretary to Felipe V.

We also recommend that you take the opportunity to visit the Urola River, the Fountain of San Juan, where another emblematic scene of the film Ocho apellidos vascos was filmed, and the Palace of Foronda, from the early twentieth century. Not forgetting, of course, the Convent of San José, from the 15th century.

What to do in Zumaia

Visiting all the corners mentioned in the previous section is possibly the main activity that can be done in Zumaia, but it is not the only one. So, if you have time, we recommend you to do these others:

1. Discover and enjoy its beaches

boat trip zumaia

If you are a die-hard fan of the series Game of Thrones, your favorite beach will surely be Itzurun, where an important scene of this production was filmed. We are referring to the landing of Jon Snow to visit Daenerys.

In addition to seeing and admiring it, you can enjoy a quiet and relaxing day under the sun and enjoying the sea. And it has everything you need to do so, such as fine sand, a length of 300 meters and clean and calm waters.

Of course, you will also have at your disposal the beach of Aitzgorri, which is smaller and has a lot of rock, and the beach of Santiago, which is very quiet, has playgrounds for children and has a Blue Flag.

2. Take a boat ride

It goes without saying that another very interesting option is to get on a boat and take a spectacular tour along the coast of this town. Thus, you will have stunning views of it and you will understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the Basque Country.

3. Visit the lighthouse of Zumaia

If you like to walk and discover picturesque corners, do not hesitate to make the journey to the aforementioned lighthouse. It was built in the second half of the 19th century and is erected next to the aforementioned river. You can not only admire it but also have a magical view of the place.

4. Savor its gastronomy

Traveling to the Basque Country means taking advantage, unquestionably, to enjoy its rich gastronomy. For this reason, you will also have to make a hole in your agenda of activities to taste some of its goodness in one of its various restaurants. The pintxos and dishes with txangurro and txistorra (spider crab and txistorra sausage) are especially popular.

Moreover, any fish and seafood is a delight to eat in Zumaia. For all this and much more is why this town in Guipuzcoa is a perfect destination for any getaway.

As you can see, Zumaia is, together with Orio , Zarautz and Hondarribia , must-see excursions from San Sebastian or from wherever you are staying on your vacation.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."

Swordfish Slams Into Boat & Punctures Hull During Wild Fishing Trip

boat trip zumaia

Everybody wants to catch a big one until the big one wants to catch you…

Deep-sea fishing is one of the absolute best ways to spend a day. When I lived in Florida, me and some buddies would call off work on a few Fridays a year and hit the Gulf in search of grouper and a few too many beers, and while we always talked about hooking a giant (and one time a guy on the boat landed two big kingfish) I’m actually a bit thankful we never had the experience these guys did in this wild video.

Swordfish are one of the coolest fish in the sea for obvious reasons. They commonly grow to over 10 feet in length (the world record being 14 feet 11 inches) and typically range in weight from 50 to 200 pounds, but if the circumstances are right they can be downright massive, as the 1,182 pound world record shows.

They’re also one of the fastest swimmers in the sea and can reach a top speed of 60 miles per hour while having the ability to survive both near the surface and at the astounding depth of over 2,200 meters (~7,200 feet for my fellow freedom lovers).

But, hands down, the most striking thing about them is the hard, sharp bill jutting off their nose that can reach 5 feet in length (similar to that of a marlin) and can cause some serious damage if they strike near top speed.

If you needed proof that a multi-hundred pound fish with a sword for a nose and swimming at highway speeds is capable of some insane power, this video is it.

It shows a group of anglers on a boat with one hooked up with a giant swordfish. Now, I’m really only familiar with this “big game” type fishing from Hemingway books, but I do know you never want one of these giants swimming directly at you. Remember when this marlin sent a group of anglers tumbling ?

Well, that’s exactly what was happening and there was no time to get out of the way and this swordfish slammed into the boat’s hull with some serious impact. The camera then cuts to show the puncture left from the impact and my goodness I’m glad that bill didn’t hit a human because it would have gone through like a hot knife through butter.

Take a look for yourself if only to appreciate the skills it takes to land these monsters. Sure, we have the upper hand of tackle and technology, but at the end of the day, it’s a massive, angry beast at the end of the line that doesn’t care at all whether you live or die.
