M5 traffic: live news updates
Live traffic updates for the m5 and m5 junctions, plus real-time reports on travel accidents, roadworks, snow and other delays.
The M5 is the primary motorway linking the Midlands to the West Country. On its route south-west, the M5 passes Bromwich, Birmingham and then through the Sandwell Valley. Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa, Worcester, Bristol and Taunton are all on its 163-mile route, before it finally finishes up at Exeter.
For the majority of the time it is a standard three-lane motorway, but because it reduces to just two lanes in places it can be prone to congestion and other traffic issues. While it is not typically the busiest part of the UK road network, Friday afternoons, summer holidays and bank holidays can be particularly hectic times to hop on the M5.

The history of the M5
The first 26 miles of the M5 motorway opened in 1962 and stretched from junction four at Lydiate Ash to the trumpet junction at Tewkesbury where it joins the M50. Despite Worcestershire County Council, the local police force and the County Surveyor of Worcestershire pushing for a three-lane route, the Ministry of Transport insisted that a two-lane motorway was to be built. Consequently, when the decision was made to widen the Worcester section of the M5 it cost £123 million to make the alteration.
• Latest live A1 traffic news
From 1967 to 1970, the M5 was extended north of junction four, along with the addition of Frankely services. Much of the construction was built as an elevated three-lane motorway using concrete pillars as support. The M5 was also extended southwards, from 1967 to 1977, through Somerset and down to Exeter, using a three-lane motorway layout once again.

M5 traffic chaos warning ahead of Devon County Show
D rivers planning to use the M5 in Devon this week are advised to plan their journeys ahead of this week’s three-day Devon County Show at the Westpoint Arena.
The show, to be held on Thursday, 16 May, Friday, 17 May and Saturday, 18 May averages an attendance of up to 100,000 people over the three days at the Clyst St Mary venue near Exeter, with increased traffic anticipated on the M5 north and south of junctions 29 and 30, the A30 east and west of Exeter and the A38 south of Exeter.
Congestion has previously occurred during the morning influx to the show, particularly the M5 northbound between junctions 31 and 30, and traffic is likely to be particularly busy on the Thursday morning. M5 traffic will be directed to use junction 30 to access the showground via the A376 and A3052, while A30 westbound traffic will be directed to exjt at the Daisy Mount junction and use the B3180 and A3052.

John Ingram, South West Network Planner for National Highways, said: “We’re working closely with our partners at Devon County Council and Devon and Cornwall Police to give drivers as much advice as possible to help them plan their journeys during this busy period, and our traffic officers will be patrolling the M5, A38 and A30 to assist with any breakdowns and incidents.
“Junction 30 of the M5 could be particularly busy and the north approach to junction 30 could also see significant increases in traffic between 8am and 10.30am over the three days when visitors to the Devon Show could be using the motorway at the same time as commuter and freight traffic.
“The A30 east and west of Exeter and A38 south of Exeter could also see increases in traffic, and drivers are advised to plan their travel routes well in advance, and to keep up to date with the latest road conditions. Yellow signs will advise show visitors which route to take on the approaches to the show.”

Possible introduction of electronic visas in Krasnodar Krai
According to the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, the possibility of introducing electronic visas for foreign visitors of Krasnodar Krai, similar to those existing in the Kaliningrad region and on the territory of the Free Port of Vladivostok, is being considered now.
“Electronic visas are new for us, we are familiarizing with them. The government decided to introduce electronic visas on the territories of the Free Port of Vladivostok and the Kaliningrad Region as an experiment which starts soon. As soon as we learn this form of work and understand how much our foreign partners are ready to act on the basis of reciprocity, we will consider your appeal”, – Sergei Lavrov said at a meeting with the governor of the Krasnodar region Veniamin Kondratiev.
The introduction of electronic visas in Krasnodar Krai aims to increase the inbound tourist flow and to attract foreign investors to the region. According to V. Kondratiev, Krasnodar region actively cooperates with foreign investors: there are about 300 enterprises with foreign capital which turnover is 9 billion dollars in the region. Krasnodar Krai is also a popular tourist region where about 15 million tourists annually rest, 6% of them are foreign citizens. This year, Krasnodar Krai also hosted a ministerial meeting with German Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel and a conference of partner cities of Russia and Germany.
According to the governor of the region, the introduction of electronic visas will help to create a favorable climate for attracting tourists and foreign partners. As noted Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Ministry will shortly hold a presentation of Krasnodar Krai which will attract additional investors and help strengthen relations with foreign partners in the region.

Traffic 'chaos' at Exeter Sainsburys as drivers abandon cars and walk home

A fuming Exeter driver has shed light on the impact roadworks have had in the area after shoppers were left stuck in Sainsbury's car park for up to two hours. The motorist claimed people got so fed up with waiting to get home that they ended up abandoning their cars in the Pinhoe branch's car park and walking home.
Over the past week the B3181 Hill Barton Road between Hollow Lane and Sainsbury’s has been closed from 7pm to 6am overnight. The Devon County Council website says that patch of works have now finished. However an extensive roadworks scheme for the area is not expected to finish until July.
One commuter said: "It would be great to warn people about the roadworks by Sainsburys near Pinhoe Road in Exeter . They closed two of the three lanes as you exit the supermarket causing traffic chaos and queues up to two hours to get out.

"Some people were abandoning their cars in Sainsburys car park and walking home. I refused to buy anything as most people did as the queues to get out were so bad, and all frozen food would have defrosted
"What made it worse was one of the lanes was only closed so that they could park their van in it for the road works. The other lane was just left empty as it is the turning lane for the closed road. Had they parked in that lane it would have completely alleviated the traffic."
There will be further overnight road closures again on the B3181 that are expected to continue for around three weeks.
The Devon County Council website states: "Six weeks of work have been scheduled between the end of the month (April) and early July, most of which will be carried out during overnight road closures on weekday evenings. However, the extensive scheme will start with temporary traffic lights overnight 7pm to 6am on Cumberland Way from Monday 29 April to Friday 3 May.
"From Monday 10 June to Friday 5 July work will carried out overnight (between 7pm to 6am) on weekday evenings on sections of the B3181 north of Hawkins Road junction to Beaumont (M5 overbridge)."
