The following ten states are the most visited in the United States: California, Florida, Nevada, Texas, New York, Virginia, South Carolina, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii. These U.S. states are some of their particular attractions, and their features are accented below.

This is completely incorrect information. This is a list based on population not on how many people travel there every year. Sorry but Maine is in the top ten for destination hot spots for vacationers. To be honest I wish it was closer to 44.

Expedia looked at how many travelers booked hotels near certain attractions and then at the popularity of points of interest based on search volume. Expedia combined the two metrics to determine a couple of must-sees for every U.S. state.

Whether you're looking to visit all 50 states or just looking for a new vacation destination, this list is a great place to start.

The top attraction in Alabama is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. The museum is the largest space museum in the United States. Gulf Shores Beach is the top city to visit in Alabama. Located on the Gulf of Mexico , it's the perfect destination for those looking for fishing, sailing, or relaxing on the beach.

If you're looking to spend time with nature, Denali National Park is one of the top places to visit in Alaska. Vermont's Lake Champlain is one of the state's great natural wonders and one of the best spots to visit. West Virginia

One of West Virginia's most popular attractions is the Cass Scenic Railroad. Visitors can ride on a logging car pushed by a steam locomotive for 11 miles through scenic views and an original lumbering town. Adventurers should make their way to New River Gorge National River, where hiking, rock climbing, and white-water rafting are among the thrills.

One of Wisconsin's best attractions is its Kalahari Water Park, the largest indoor water park in the United States. Families can enjoy miles of slides and rides no matter the time of year in this African safari-themed water park. If you're looking to stay outdoors, the Apostle Islands Lakeshore is a beautiful destination on the shores of Lake Superior. Visitors can wander the lakeside and relax during the summers and check out the frozen sea caves in the winter.

The top places to visit in Wyoming are Grand Tetons National Park and Devils Tower National Monument. Grand Tetons has majestic mountains, lake reflections, tranquil solitude, and plenty of wildlife to spot, including bison, bears, deer, and birds of prey. The park has over 200 miles of trails for hikers and bikers and skiing in the winter. Devils Tower is a jutting geological formation that was the star of the sci-fi film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The tower is 867 feet tall and attracts hikers and UFO enthusiasts every day.

All 50 States Tourism and Visitors Bureaus’ Websites and Contact Info

Visitor bureaus are organizations that serve as the primary contact for visitors to their city, town or region.

They create guides and maps about attractions in the area. They also offer suggestions on where to go and what to do. They typically have a website where they list all the attractions, museums and restaurants in their area.

If you’re looking for information on the best places to visit, or if attractions are closed because of weather or other events, find a local visitor’s bureau. They will have up-to-date information about what is happening in your area and they can be a great resource to find ideas of things to do or places to see.

Most of these bureaus do not provide lodging, sell tickets or lead tours, but some might. It’s worth asking about.

I wanted to create a list of all 50 states’ tourism and visitors bureaus’ websites and contact info, so I could have a quick reference guide on hand for myself and for you.

Using these resources along with some of the best travel tips will ensure your next trip is everything you want it to be.

One fun fact about Maine is that it is the only state in the Union without a city over 70,000 people as of 2019. And it only has one city over 40,000, Portland, Maine with 66,000. All the rest are smaller than 36,000 in population.

Fun fact about Oregon: It has both the deepest river gorge and the deepest lake in the United States.

Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge at its deepest point it is approximately 17,000 feet deep. Crater Lake National Park has the deepest lake in the United States. At its deepest point, it’s approximately 1949 feet deep.

People may not know that Pennsylvania is the home of Hershey’s Chocolate company and is known as The Chocolate Capital of the USA because of it.

In addition to chocolate, Pennsylvania has a lot going for it! They’ve got amazing parks to explore like Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area  or  Gettysburg National Military Park . And there are a whole host of other museums and historical sites as well.

Did you know the Liberty Bell was originally commissioned by the Pennsylvania Assembly to commemorate American independence on July Fourth?

The United States is a kaleidoscope of cosmopolitan cities, rich cultures, and enchanting landscapes catering for everything from city breaks to longer escapes in nature.

Each American state has its own unique attraction and individual character. Experience the wilderness in Alaska, taste fine wines in California, and tick off bucket list sights in New York State. Whether you’re looking to embrace the beauty of its national parks and desert landscapes, enjoy the thrills and spills of a world-class amusement park, or simply relax on sun-splashed beaches, there’s an American state with your name on it.

10. Washington

When you’re touring America, Washington – the only state named after a president – is as good a place to start as any. It’s been nicknamed the Evergreen State because of its abundance of rich green forests, particularly found in Seattle, the Emerald City. Interestingly, it produces more apples than any other U.S. state and it’s home to the oldest human remains in North America.

Split in two by the Cascade Mountains, Washington state has parks, volcanoes and idyllic islands to one side and coastal forests, farmlands, and hundreds of wineries on the other. The North Cascades are a beauty to discover with its steep mountains and crisp freshwater lakes, perfect for outdoorsy travelers.

For those who would prefer a break from the mainland, the San Juan Islands are a series of forested islands offering kayaking, orca whale watching, and bird watching opportunities.


9. Wyoming

Tucked away in the rugged mountains of the Western United States, Wyoming is both wild and wonderful. Despite its large size, it is one of the most sparsely populated states in America. Here, you’ll swap city sights and crowds for national parks, cowboy ranches, hot springs, and endless wilderness.

But there is history to be found here too; Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote in 1869. For outdoorsy travelers, Yellowstone National Park is a major highlight with its extraordinary geothermal activity and wildlife-abundant plains dotted with wolves, elk, and grizzly bears. It is home to more geysers than any other geyser field in the world!

Along with Grand Teton National Park and Hot Springs State Park, Wyoming is perfect for all kinds of outdoor adventures, from hiking, swimming, and kayaking to mountain biking and skiing. 


The second-largest state in the United States, Texas really packs a punch. Situated in the South Central region, it’s loved for its soaring temperatures, country music, famous Texan BBQs, and bird watching – it’s home to more bird species than any other U.S. state.

Known as the Lone Star State (so-called for its flag and former independence as a Republic), Texas still feels different from the rest of the USA. Although despite its massive size that incorporates 28 cities, the proud people of Texas share the same values, patriotism, and a distinct culture.

Don’t leave without taking a stroll along the San Antonio River Walk with its art galleries, museums, restaurants, and endless opportunities for retail therapy. For a little history, visit the Alamo historical fort that played a pivotal role in the 1835 Texan independence war against Mexico. 


7. Colorado

Known as the Centennial State, Colorado is the highest elevated state in the United States. One of the Mountain States, it’s characterized by beautiful peaks, dense forests, deep canyons, and gorgeous meandering rivers. While the majority of the attractions are nature-based, the bustling capital of Denver – the Mile High City – is also worth a visit with its craft breweries and epic nightlife scene.

Colorado has many claims to fame. It’s home to the world’s largest hot spring pool, the deepest hot spring on Earth, the highest paved road in the U.S., and the largest flat-top mountain in the world.

But one of the main reasons tourists flock to Colorado is for its year-round skiing opportunities. Home to a wealth of excellent ski resorts like Aspen and Vail, the state’s frequent mountain snowstorms ensure that there’s plenty of fresh powder for skiing and snowboarding. While you can get great deals for skiing throughout the year, the best skiing in Colorado is hands down between February and March.

Alaska, the largest U.S state, is an astonishing place, home to thousands of rivers and streams, hundreds of thousands of astonishing glaciers, and millions of glistening lakes. In fact, these magical glaciers cover around 5% of the entire state!

Known as the ‘Last Frontier’ because of its distance from the rest of the U.S states, Alaska is an isolated place. The large majority is in the Arctic. A short visit to Alaska likely won’t scratch the surface but you can get a feel for the state with expeditions to see Alaskan wildlife such as wolves, moose, whales, and Kodiak bears.

Many don’t know this, but the best thing about Alaska is that you can witness the Northern Lights here for over 240 days of the year, probably because of the low light levels – in some parts of the state, the sun doesn’t rise for nearly two months! But when the sun does rise, it really rises: it often doesn’t set again for three months. This time of the year is ideal for wildlife watching.

The state of Arizona is an enchanting wonderland of spectacular red rock canyons and desert plateaus. But while it is most famous for the iconic landscapes of the Grand Canyon , stretching through the dramatic Petrified Forest and the vibrant and colorful Painted Desert, Arizona is so much more than that.

You’ll also find more mountains in the Grand Canyon State than in Switzerland, and a quarter of the state is covered in the largest unbroken Ponderosa pine forests in America. Add to that the wooded slopes of the Mogollon Rim and the dramatic desert sweeps of Monument Valley and the Sonoran Desert and you’ve really got a mix of everything.

But scenery aside, Arizona also has some lovely small towns that are worth a visit, including the capital, Phoenix, known for its world-class spas and championship golf courses.


4. New York

New York State is tucked away in the north-eastern section of the United States. Lovingly dubbed the Empire State, it is most famous for the cosmopolitan sights of New York City, where you’ll find the glitz and glamor of Manhattan’s high rises, bustling Times Square, and the fresh green walkways of Central Park.

It’s not just the Big Apple that draws visitors to the fourth most populated U.S. state, but the quieter adventures to be found upstate, such as the captivating Adirondacks. New York State is also known for the thundering Niagara Falls, its fabulous Long Island beaches, and the wine-producing Finger Lakes Region, with 100-plus wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Here, you can enjoy hiking around the many lakes, tastings at a winery, or a mix of both for the best of both worlds!

The state of Hawaii is the longest island chain in the world – so long that it even has its own time zone! The southernmost state in the United States, it is also the only American state that’s made up entirely of islands. Interestingly, only seven of these 130-plus islands are inhabited. The rest are reserved purely for adventures: think waterfall trekking, thrilling helicopter rides, and lazy beach days!

The Aloha State is also a great spot for foodies. It is the only state that grows its own coffee, and more than a third of the world’s pineapples are grown in Hawaii. Each island has its own appeal: spend your days chasing waterfalls in Kauai , surfing on Big Island, or relaxing on Oahu’s powdery beaches. You won’t be disappointed.

Florida is where the fun happens; a fact that’s backed by the 90-million-plus visitors that visit here every year. Known as the Sunshine State, it’s chock-a-block with family-friendly attractions, from theme parks to water parks and beaches. Plus, it boasts over 230 days of sunshine a year!

Orlando is undoubtedly the highlight, home to Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom, the most popular theme park in the world. But Universal Studios, the many glamorous shopping malls, and undulating golf courses also give visitors a run for their money.

Miami is a close second with its white-sand beaches, glitzy beach resorts, and diving oases. Interestingly, Florida is home to over 7,000 lakes and more golf courses than any other state in the nation. Perfect for teeing off, it doesn’t hurt that it is the flattest state in the United States.

The most notable trend is travelers’ desire to spend more time outdoors. They’re helping revive the tourism industry in states like Utah and Arizona, where state and national parks are plentiful. Meanwhile, Florida’s booming theme park industry and accessible beaches are driving an exceptional recovery for the state.

This is good news for tour and attraction operators. The uptick in visitors to your state will translate to more bookings and revenue for your travel business.

If you’re not sure how your state is faring, here are all the U.S. tourism statistics by state that you need to know.

What US states spend the most on tourism? 

Historically, Hawaii, Florida, and California were the top three states that spent the most on tourism. Texas, Michigan, and New York were also among the top spenders.

Over the past five years, state tourism funding has increased by 20% across the board. States spend, on average, $22 million on tourism initiatives to attract tourists and generate visitor spending.

Most states took a major step back in tourism spending during the pandemic, but now, they’re jumping back into the marketing game.   Twenty-nine states ramped up their tourism budgets during the 2021-2022 fiscal year, including Colorado, Florida, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

Hawaii and Florida were among the top spenders: In 2022, Hawaii secured a $60 million tourism budget, while Florida had over $80 million to work with, including $30 million in federal stimulus money. 

How much of Florida’s economy is tourism-driven?

Nationwide, travel and tourism are major drivers of economic activity. The tourism industry is responsible for 2.9% of the U.S. GDP.

That number is even higher in Florida, where tourism represents 10% of the state’s overall GDP. The industry supports nearly 13% of the state’s jobs.

In 2019, Florida welcomed 131 million out-of-state visitors, 10% of which were international. In total, visitors spent $98.8 billion and helped generate $27.6 billion in federal, state, and local taxes.

The total economic impact amounted to $96.5 billion in 2019.

How much of Hawaii’s economy is tourism-driven? 

Hawaii is also heavily reliant on tourism. The travel industry represents about a quarter of the state’s economy.

Over 10 million tourists traveled to Hawaii in 2019, which is over seven times the state’s population. Visitors spent $17.8 billion and contributed over $2 billion in tax revenue.

Theme parks, casinos, and parks are fueling a strong tourism rebound in these 10 states.

The state is quickly catching up to pre-pandemic visitation numbers and even setting new records. In 2021, Florida welcomed nearly 118 million domestic visitors, the highest level in state history. This was great news for the hotel industry, which is already generating revenue at pre-pandemic levels. The state’s total hotel revenue hit a record in 2021 at $17.3 billion, a 2% increase from 2019.

2. Tennessee

Tennessee’s tourism industry is already setting post-pandemic records. In 2021, visitors spent a record $24 billion traveling through the state. That breaks down to $66 million daily, a 44% increase from the year prior.

3. Virginia

The shift toward outdoor and adventure travel has increased park attendance across the U.S. In Virginia, nearly 8 million people visited the region’s 41 state parks in 2021, a 15% increase from 2019.

4. Arkansas

Similarly, the tourism growth seen in Arkansas is driven by its parks. The state welcomed just over 41 million visitors in 2021, surpassing the 36.3 million that came in 2019. Hot Springs National Park had over 2 million recreational visits in 2021, topping the previous visitation record set in 1970. 

Utah’s strong rebound can be attributed to the popularity of the “Might Five,” which is the nickname given to Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion National Parks. The five parks welcomed 11.2 million recreation visits in 2021, and all but Bryce Canyon National Park had a record-breaking year. 

Wyoming had a big tourism year in 2021. Visitors spent $4 billion, which helped generate $243 million in tax revenue — a 50% increase from 2020. Yellowstone National Park welcomed a record number of visitors (nearly 5 million).

Tourism in Maine has rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. In fact, tourism was up 25% in the first five months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, visitor spending was up 18% in May of this year over May 2019. In 2021, over 15.6 million visitors flocked to the state, an increase of 29% from 2020.

Montana’s state parks welcomed a record-setting number of visitors in 2020. That trend continued into the following year when visitors spent $5.15 billion while traveling through the state, a billion dollars more than they spent in 2019.

In 2021, Arizona outpaced the national rate in terms of visitor spending and overnight stays. The state recovered 87% of its overnight visitation and 92% of its visitor spending rate from pre-pandemic times. Overnight visitors spent $23.6 billion across the state in 2021.

Las Vegas is fueling a strong tourism rebound in Nevada. This past February was the best in history for Vegas, with $1.1 billion of casino winnings recorded. Meanwhile, monthly passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport more than doubled in February compared to a year ago.

• Nebraska: 6.5 million
• Wyoming: 8.1 million (Despite being one of the least visited states, record visitation at Yellowstone National Park in 2021 have propelled Wyoming’s tourism industry forward.)

• Montana: 12.5 million (Montana’s state parks welcomed a record number of visitors in 2020, putting the state’s natural beauty on the map.)

HotelsCombined, a hotel booking site, produced an infographic that shows the most popular US states to travel to. They analyzed more than 87,000 hotel bookings that originated in the US to determine which states are the most popular tourism destinations.

After California, Florida (No. 2), Nevada (No. 3), Texas (No. 4), and New York (No. 5) dominated over this list. Hawaii came in at No. 10 and Colorado took No. 16. But very few people want to travel to West Virginia, which came in dead last. 

The site also logged which destinations people from each state are interested in visiting most. New Yorkers book the most hotel rooms in Florida, Texans like to travel to California, and Californians like to travel to Nevada.  Ironically, people in Alaska want to visit Hawaii the most—probably for the warm climate change—but no state wants to visit Alaska.

There’s a new list ranking the best state parks in the country and an Oregon coast destination snagged the No. 8 spot.

Time Out , an international travel website, compiled the list and Ecola State Park is the only park in the Pacific Northwest that made the cut.

Between Cannon Beach and Seaside, Ecola encompasses 9 miles of coastline with plenty of striking ocean views along with hiking, tidepooling, surfing and wildlife-viewing options.

The park is no stranger to accolades. Last year, Outside magazine picked it as one of the best state parks in the U.S. and in 2018, Oregonian readers picked it as their No. 5 favorite state park.

Time Out is a fan of Ecola after seeing it in movies like “Twilight,” “The Goonies” and “Kindergarten Cop.” The website also likes the park’s views, Indian Beach , the Sitka spruce forest and hiking opportunities like the Clatsop Loop Trail .

Other entries from the western part of the country on Time Out’s list are No. 3 Goblin Valley State Park in Utah, No. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California and No 6. Chugach State Park in Alaska.

To get to Ecola State Park, take U.S. 101 to City Center in Cannon Beach. On the north end of town, turn west onto East Fifth Street, then right onto Ecola State Park Road. Follow signs for the park. All cars are required to display an annual or day-use parking pass. Day passes are $5 and can be purchased at the park. Iowa is home to one of the Midwest's best campgrounds, new list says.

What better way to kick off the summer than eating smores over a campfire and sleeping under the stars?

But before you can enjoy the recreation, you have to pick where to pitch your tent. If you're looking for a top-rated campground, you might not have to travel very far.

Dyrt , a platform dedicated to camping tips and campgrounds reviews released a list of the best places to camp in the Midwest. So where did Iowa place on the list?

Where is the best place to camp in Iowa?

Pottawattamie County is home to one of the best camping spots in the Midwest, according to Dyrt . Hitchcock Nature Center, located in Honey Creek, ranked second on the list. It was followed by Mouth of Two Hearted River State Forest Campground in Michigan. The only location that beat Hitchcock Nature Center was Sand Springs Campgrounds in Ohio.

Where is the Hitchcock Nature Center?

While visiting the Hitchcock Nature Center you will be transported back in time to Iowa's original ecosystem. The campsite is located on 1,500 acres of prairie and savannah known as the Loess Hills. At the highest point of the park, there is even a gallery and gift shop known as the Loess Hill Lodge, according to Dyrt.

The Loess Hills formed thousands of years ago by the glaciers and winds carrying glacial till. Shaanxi, China is the only other location where loess, a mineral-rich sediment, reaches deposits 200 feet deep or more. The Loess Hills are part of the less than 0.1% of prairie that remains in the state of Iowa, according to Pottawattamie County .

What is at the Hitchcock Nature Center?

If sleeping on the ground isn't your thing, there is a site for RVs. There is also a modern bathhouse. Even though some sites may require a mile-plus hike through " rough terrain ," it will all be worth it when you are looking over the ridge of the Missouri River Valley.

There are 10 miles of unpaved trail systems to explore. While hiking, prepare to stop for birdwatching. Come prepped with water and tall socks. The trails are not open to bikes, horses or ATVs.

How much is it to stay at Hitchcock Nature Center?

Full-hookup campsites are $30 per night and a $5 parking admission per vehicle. Remember to bring a cash or check to pay the fee at the gate. Standard sites are $10 while cabins can range from $75 to $300 a night depending on the time of the reservation.

WalletHub checked out the cheapest U.S. destinations that are also easy to reach, and analyzed 100 of the largest metro areas across 41 key indicators ranging from the cheapest flight and the average price of a meal for two to the number of attractions available.

The outlet then compared 100 of the most populated metro areas across six categories, including travel costs, local costs, attractions, weather, activities and safety.

The top three best summer travel destinations according to WaletHub for 2024 are:

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is considered the top destination, as flights to the city from other major cities do not require connections and typically cost under $300.

The city also has an abundance of shopping centers, parks, pools and ice cream parlors, as well as one of the latest “last call” times in the country at 4 a.m, for those who like to kick back and knock back a few while far from the daily grind.

Washington, D.C.

The Washington, D.C., metro area is rated the second-best summer travel destination, as the city is not only filled with affordable restaurants rated at least 4.5 on Yelp, but its many monuments and museums will make the trip memorable for both the casual and hardcore history buff.

With one of the lowest crime rates in the country, the city is also one of the safest to travel to.

Orlando, Florida

Known for its enormous theme parks, the third-ranked city also offers reasonably affordable hotel accommodations.

From high-quality restaurants to water parks to ice cream shops, boat tours and spas, Orlando is a family-friendly destination with plenty to do for thrill seekers and relaxation seekers alike.

New York City

Wrapped up with New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the region lands at number 12 on the list.

Coming in second when it comes to attractions, the city has everything from high-end restaurants to low-end restaurants to museums, architecture, history and more shopping than most can manage.

A trip to the Big Apple is more costly than other destinations, so plan ahead with booking discounts and deals.

U.S. News & World Report released its annual list of the of the 150  "Best Places to Live in the U.S."  this week.

Here's how editors said the magazine determined its picks: Analyzing the 150 most populous metropolitan areas and evaluating several factors including  job prospects, affordability, growth and quality of life. 

Topping the 2023-24 list: Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The magazine called Green Bay "The perfect mix of big-city amenities complemented with a Midwestern, small-town feel."

In addition to being home to its National Football League team, the Green Bay Packers, the city "boasts a thriving entertainment and arts scene, revitalized downtown, and two college campuses, creating an energy that may appeal to young families as well as retirees."

After ranking the country's 150 largest metropolitan areas, Huntsville, Alabama ranked the 2nd best place to live in America beating (3) Raleigh Durham, North Carolina ; (4) Boulder, Colorado and (5) Sarasota, Florida.

Last on the list this year: The tropical island of Puerto Rico .

The top 25 included five Florida cities while Colorado and North Carolina both had three cities each on the list.
