Can someone please provide me with an opinion or review of their experience with Happy Fish. We are planning to do a tour of Livingston, etc, and are considering using them.

Sorry, I forgot to mention we are traveling with 3 kids, ages 11, 6, and 8

  • 2 weeks later...

Has anyone recently used this tour company and care to share their experience? Thanks Rick

  • 1 month later...

Has anyone booked a tour thru them?? How would you rate it?

I highly reccommend them. We used them last week to tour Quirgua and had a great time. New van and excellent guide Erik (The Red).

A Sixth?

Well, we have to say our experience with Happy Fish was 'odd"

First off, there was a lot of confusion as to what to do with us even though they had us written down in their notes for 11:00. It appeared as if we were the only couple who'd booked a tour with them to the waterfalls at 11:00, and it took them 45 minutes to find us a cab with two other couples who'd booked direct as walk offs.

Our guide was a young lady "Cecily" ?(Not sure of the name, she wasn't feeling well and was a bit hard to understand) and we drove to the water falls and ended up with a very "basic" drive through the city near the port, stopping to get out only once for a walk through the local market.

The "guide" was decidedly low key.

We were happy with the low price of the "tour" but can't give the experience the same glowing reviews others have for the happy Fish experience.

SANTO TOMAS – The ship docks at a container port where there is a warehouse full of shopping and tour vendors. There is live local music and dancing going on, and you really got the feeling these people appreciated the money you were spending. We booked a tour with HAPPY FISH, and got a bargain. 100.00 for the five of us, for a 5-hour tour of the Rio Dulce, and the fishing village of Livingston. Our guide, a local Guarfana Indian did a great job, and took us way up stream were we were able to interact with many local Indians. This was a scene right our of National Geographic. Kids no older than 7-8 paddling around in canoes carved out of tree trunks. Teenagers fishing with nets, women washing their clothes on stones. This was a very good experience for my kids to see. We stopped at a thermal hot spring, and had the chance to explore a cave that was recently discovered. Later we went to Livingston were we were taken to the Happy Fish restaurant. The food was great! We had three fish and seafood meals with drinks for 33 USD. The really neat thing about this port was the send off they give you as the ship leaves. All of the vendors, tour guides, local policemen, dock workers and their kids line up and sing and dance and wave as the ship pulls out. Very touching!

I am very interested in doing this ssame tour with our family of 5 (mom, dad, 3 children). Did you book ahead of time or at the port? Their website is a bit more expensive is why I ask. Thanks for sharing.

They have people waiting at the Dock to take you to their kiosk. You can email them to hold a spot or you can go into the tourist bldg 2nd kiosk on right as you enter and speak with them. Our trip to Quirigua was excellent and others who went to the falls had a good time. You can not beat their prices. Transportation is realiable but guides very. Guatemala is trying to develope a tourist trade so they are playing catch up.

I booked on the internet----for a lot more than someone else posted on this site ----:(

We met as we were told at 10 am---all of a sudden NO more boats!!! We HAD to DEMAND a boat! The tour left about 10:30. The Rio Dulce was beautiful--- but the tour was the worst on my cruise.

The itinerary I was sent was NOT followed at ALL! See below!

10:00 a.m. Depart from Santo Tomas de Castilla by small boat, enjoying the scenic ride gliding past the lush green coast of Guatemala's "different"

Caribbean. Departed at 10:30 am

10:30 a.m. We will happen in front of the Caribbean town of Livingston.

10:40 a.m. we will enter the tube of Dulce River, this it is a calm water

river, its vegetation hangs of walls of more than 400 feet of height, Where

we will visit the hanging gardens, the wall of the pioneers, cave of the

12:00 a.m. we will visit hot water (thermal) and lagoon Gardens.

12:30 a.m. We will visit the project Ak'tenamit. In which are the school for

the Mayan children Queqchi. It will be able to walk in the footpath, to buy

crafts you throw by the Mayan children Queqchi (with this you collaborate

with the project Ak'tenamit). Never Happened-----Main reason I booked this tour!!!

13:15 p.m. we will visit the Caribbean town of Livingston, our city tour in

this colorful town begins with a visit to the museum, later we will cross

the most interesting sites of this beautiful place. Never Happened---and we arrived at 12:45 pm at the Happy Fish Restaurant.

13:40 p.m. we will visit one of the typical restaurants of this town, where

we will rest and if it wishes it can buy one of the delicious meals that

offer. Actually arrived at 12:45! Left Livingston at 14:45 --- 2 hours at a restaurant :( !!!!

14:40 p.m. Return to the port. Arrived at port at 15:15!

guide said we would be entertained by a Garfuna group during lunch--- never happened!

The guide was not articulate at all!

Would I go with them again-----NO WAY!

I have been to Guatemala 5 times now----and this was by far the worst experience I have had!

Your experience echoes what others have said about the same tour. I believe they are trying to do their own version of Go With Gus. Our trip to Quirigua was good and we were suspect prior to the tour based on what others said. That being, I made it clear on my intentions and would use this forum to call it like I saw it. Results were positive and I would give them another try on a basic tour.

Let me start by saying I was one of the skeptics who posted before my cruise that Happy Fish hadn't been around long and seemed to be posting about how great they were without any independent corroboration. We gave them a chance after we arrived and we were very happy.

Just returned from the Sun and we booked the Las Escobas waterfall tour with Happy Fish when we arrived in Guatemala . Waited about 15 minutes on pier for boat. Small boat took about 10 of us on fast ride to another spot. Boat ride was a blast. Then short (100 yard) walk to minivan. How they got 10 plus a guide and a driver in the van is beyond me but we did and arrived at the National Park in about 10 minutes. Not much to see on drive but what we did was extreme poverty. Arrived at Park and they opened gates to let us drive in so we weren't bothered by people selling stuff. Other vans dropped off outside and complained they were bothered by sellers. Native family selling water ($1 a bottle). Restrooms here were ok. Walked up to waterfalls with our guide and swam there about 20 minutes. Then continued up to second waterfall and swam there maybe 20 minutes. Water was cool but felt great after the walk. Not much water on the waterfall due to lack of rainfall. Walked back to park entrance and had chance to buy some crafts. Not much stuff to buy and no pressure. Van arrived about 10 minutes later and took us back to waiting boat for ride back to port.

Cost $30 US each. Gave him a $5 tip. Great trip. Lots of fun, guide was very friendly and never rushed us. Got us back in plenty of time to shop.

Would definitely use Happy Fish travel again.

Would definitely book with Happy Fish agai.

Happy Fish completely blew us off and all inquiries were ignored. Booked with gowithgustours.com and it was fantastic. Freddy is a great guide!

HesitantCruiser

We were with Happy Fish last week. I'd read a review somewhere that said they felt that Happy Fish's entire tour was designed to get people to their restaurant. I have to agree with that. Our guide seemed to get quite a bit of his information from our boat captain (who was great). Nice, friendly, but there was just a pervasive feeling of being manipulated. Hard to describe.

I highly, highly recommend going up the Rio Dulce. It's beautiful and the culture contrast between the Mayan people and the mostly-Euro rich poeple in yachts is both fascinating and disheartening. Livingston was a little bit of a dissapointment, but I think that was largely due to timing (Semana Santa) and the absurd amount of time & money we had to spend in H.F. restaurant.

Oh - and make sure none of your cash is ripped when you go ashore in Guatemala, They don't take even slightly ripped bills!

  • 7 months later...

We just used Happy Fish Tour on Wed. for a 'fishing' trip for the guys in our group!

$300 for up to 6 people...poles, water, bait, fishing boat taken to where the fish are, is what we were told.....

What we got: 5 people in our group, a couple of poles that did NOT work, string tied to a board, no bait, and tour guides that used the bait we had, NOT a fishing boat but a water taxi and NO FISH FINDER!!

Do not spend any time or money with Happy Fish Tours!

The women used another tour company that was with Gus Tours but called something else....I will review them as well once I finish unpacking....

Well when I got home I emailed them to let them know how I felt....they offered us 1/2 our money back. My DH will go pick up the Money Gram today.

They made it 'right' so I would look at other tours they offered in the furture, not the fishing one but the others.

We arrived early Sunday morning and walked up main street anf we got greeted by this nice restaurant. We ordered breakfast and coffee. A good start. Pretty soon more travelers joint us. Recommended MeuterMedia

The hotel where we are staying suggested us this travel agency for a tour in Belize and we are very pleased to say that we really appreciated the trip and the way it was organized: they came to pick us up directly at our hotel, the captain and his helper are extremely kind, captain José explained where we were going during the entire trip and asked us what we prefered to do, so that everyone would be happy (someone prefered staying at the beach instead of going snorkeling, for example, in the first part of the stay in Belize..), lunch was included in the service and there was plenty of food, sweets, beverages and several kinds of fruits (and you could have one or more of each kind!). I recommend this travel agency because it is very reliable and professional and we had a great time during the tour they organized.

A free lunch is a free lunch....however, for those people who take Happy Fish's wonderful tour, the lunch is ok. You have 3 choices, a chicken, steak or seafood dish. The best option is the chicken, followed by the seafood ( for $5 extra) then the steak. Soft drinks are included, beers were $2 each. The restrooms were decent. All in all, pleasant atmosphere except for a small band that set up, played for 5 minutes, approached everyone at the tables for money and we contributed, then they packed up and left! Most annoying.

We've tried many dishes here. The breakfasts were tasty and they serve very good coffee here as well. The tapado is absolutely must try dish here. Reasonable prices!
