Swedish pop rock duo Roxette is comprised of Per Gessie and Marie Fredriksson, and they are originally from Halmstad, Sweden.

The duo met in the late 70s when they were both part of two different bands, Gessle was part of Gyllene Tider and Fredriksoon was part of Strul and MaMas Barn. While recording her first solo album, Fredriksson lent vocal backup for Gyllene Tider’s first English album, “The Hearland Café,” which garnered attention from the United States based label, Capitol Records. Capitol, however, wanted the group to change the name, which is how they settled on the name Roxette. Unfortunately international success did not come for the group, resulting in Gessie pursuing a solo career.

Both Gessie and Fredriksson each put out two solo albums until it was suggested to them by EMI managing director, Rolf Nygren, that the two sing together. The two recorded a single together under the name Roxette entitled “Neverending Love.” The success of the single resulted in a quick record entitled “Pearls of Passion” which was released in 1986. Led off by two singles, they released their second album, “Look Sharp!” in their native Sweden in 1988. The album held at No. 1 on the Swedish album charts for fourteen weeks and won their first Rockbjornen Award. The third single off of the album once again caught the attention of EMI, who had previously thought they had no market in the United States, released the single on a global scale.

After extensive touring, Roxette returned to the studio in late 1990 to record and release “Joyride.” The album became a popular success, and became their best selling album. They then embarked on another large-scale tour including countries such as Germany, Australia and the United States. The tour, which reached over 1.5 million fans, lasted until 1992 and during the tour they had collected more material for another album released later in 1992. For the rest of the 90s the duo continued to put out new albums and tour, however due to change in popular music, they skipped over a tour of the United States. They also took a break from making music together.

Gessle and Fredriksoon reunited in 1998 to record a new album entitled “Have A Nice Day,” which was followed by a tour of Europe. They followed up with “Room Service” in 2001, which did well in their home country of Sweden, as well as Germany, but did not do as well as expected. The following year they received a Music Export Prize from the Swedish Government at the Grammy awards. Again taking a break, they reunited in 2009 and in 2012 released “Traveling.”

Live reviews

Roxette are the second-most successful pop act ever to emerge from Sweden; when the number one slot on that list is inhabited by ABBA, though, you quickly realise there’s no shame in being number two. After all, Roxette’s sales figures would likely sit them at the top of the pile in most other countries; over the course of a career that’s no stretched over almost thirty years, they’ve sold in excess of sixty million records across the globe, as well as seeing their records Joyride and Look Sharp! go platinum on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Germany. The duo - comprised of Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson - have had plenty to contend with over the years, too, both professionally - having to adapt to the demands of a constantly shape-shifting pop industry - and personally, with Fredriksson’s diagnosis with a brain tumour in 2002 forcing the pair to stay away from the live stage for seven years. They’re well and truly back on it now, though, finally making it to the Night of the Proms in Belgium in 2009 seven years after having to shelve an appearance. They went on to play a huge European tour to rave reviews, with classic cuts accompanied by new material on the setlist and a stunning live show bringing the work of one of pop’s best-loved duos to life.

Roxette often get overlooked due to the phenomenal success of fellow Swedish pop juggernauts Abba, however the band have enjoyed an incredibly successful career globally and unlike the Eurovision quartet, they continue to tour to their loyal fanbase.

They are a joy to watch live and really bring a quality of fun and free spiritedness to the show which goes down wonderfully with the audience. Supported by a brilliant band, they begin with 'Dress For Success' and the hits just keep coming. What I imagined would have made a worthy finale, 'It Must Have Been Love' is played mid-set as the audience bellow back the familiar lyrics whilst Marie Fredriksson conducts them to sway in unison.

With the feel good vibes at their very height, they continue with 'Dangerous' and 'Joyride' before disappearing to huge cheers to encore. They happily bound back onstage and thank the crowds for singing along to such great effort before one final performance of 'The Look' proves that there is no shame in coming second, especially where Swedish pop is concerned.

The duo was wonderful. Great setlist, perfect stage presence, flawless musical performance. Marie had to perform the whole event sitting down in the same place, and yet her voice never faltered, the tune was never lost, her wild high notes and sudden improvs never failed. They drove us wild and we jumped an sang along at the top of our lungs. We clapped until our hands were raw and we felt lost when it was over.

On the flip side, the Berlin O2 Arena is one of my least favourite concert venues. It's huge and beautiful, but the concert started one hour and a half late, at which point the people in the pit were already exhausted and cranky. The sound quality was amateur hour, and there are no secondary screens of any sort, so the people in the nosebleed section (or in fact even in the good seats) might as well stay home and watch it on Youtube. If you ever buy seats in this venue, remember to bring a really good pair of binoculars.

Even though I knew that Marie has serious health problems, and I was happy to take part in their concert in Budapest, I couldn't help feel that no power, but a kind of 'sick' energy came from the stage, made me feel unconfortable.

Songs are awesome, but she had a very weak voice and was seemingly not in mood to perform on wednesday. :(

Marie's effort is admirable. She's got money enough to retire, but she fight against her illness and gives all their fans a priceless gift.

Per is as magnificent as always. He's the Boss of Pop Rock.

And last but not least, the band was awesome.

Roxette concert was amazing... They are such a nice duo... despite Marie is still a bit fragile they did a great show, perfect voices and even the piano song with the backvocal was AWESOME. I was so touched by their concert.

A great concert, Roxette are true superstars

lots of singing and dancing from the crowd.

News: Per Gessle Confirms Roxette Will Continue With New Album And Tour Under PG Roxette

roxette on tour

An era is over. Another one is born.

With the birth of PG Roxette, Per Gessle will continue the adventure he and Marie Fredriksson began, just over 35 years ago. Together with members from the classic Roxette band and a sound echoing somewhere between “Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” Gessle returns to the musical peak of his life – with a new album and plans for a tour.

“Since the 80’s, my whole life has been spinning around Roxette and to this day it’s still what excites me the most. There are millions of people out there who still love the band so of course I want to keep our music alive”, says Per Gessle.

Years have passed and Per Gessle has been torn between different visions. The Roxette we once knew no longer exists, but Per strongly felt he wasn’t ready to bury Roxette for good. He still has so much to give, so many more songs to write. Most of all, Roxette brings him nothing but pure joy and energy.

“After all there are only two options with Roxette: Either to put the lid on or to continue in some shape or form. At first, I wasn’t sure which way to go but as time passed by it became clear that I want to continue this fantastic joyride. I want to keep the legacy of Roxette alive. I’ve written almost every song Roxette has recorded over the years and they mean the world to me. Hence, I feel this is the right decision. I’m so proud of this body of work and I love working with these people.”

Because even if PG Roxette surely marks the beginning of a new era, there’s also a lot for the fans to recognize; both in the new music and in the people who’ve created it. For the recording of the upcoming album, Gessle gathered the classic Roxette band – Jonas Isacsson, Clarence Öfwerman, Magnus Börjeson and Christoffer Lundquist with the aim to make a classic Roxette record.

“When I started to write, my ambition was to try to create a sibling to ”Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” – and that’s actually exactly how it sounds. I’ve wanted to create a modern production, but with the typical Roxette trademarks.

In 2016 Roxette did their very last concert. Three years later Marie Fredriksson passed away, after her battle with cancer for 17 years.

A Roxette without Marie sheds light on a burning question: Who can fill the shoes left by one of the greatest pop singers of our time? Simple answer: No one can.

Instead, Per is joined by two other singers very well known to most of the Roxette fans; Helena Josefsson and Dea Norberg. Both have been in the inner circle of Roxette for years.

“It’s impossible to replace Marie and that was never my intention. Our Roxette era was an unbelievable fantasy that we got to share together. I’m excited to be able to continue this journey, but in a different way. Needless to say that if Marie was still here, we’d be doing this together.”

Next up is the release of the PG Roxette album and eventually a tour with both new music and old Roxette material in the setlist.

“I’m super proud of all the amazing recordings Roxette did and the new material really feels incredible. It’s not always that easy to re-invent yourself when you’ve been doing this for as long as I have with a huge body of work as a result. Sometimes you feel you repeat yourself, but then suddenly you tread on unfamiliar ground and you get curious in a wonderful way. That’s when I feel this is my life, this is what I do best, this is where I belong.”

The PG Roxette album is set to release mid September, with a first single out end of May.

Per is working with PG Roxette alongside his upcoming unplugged tour in Sweden, which starts April 21.

Roxette Announce 2025 Australian Tour

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Almost five years ago, the other member of the Roxette duo, Marie Fredriksson passed away due to cancer. The duo last performed at their concert back in 2016. But now, the Frontman of the duo, Per Gessle who is also the songwriter and founder of the duo, is finally back to hit the roads again and deliver Roxette’s all-time classics to the fans worldwide.

Per Gessle says: “This is all about my Roxette songs, this huge bundle of music and lyrics. I’ve been writing for well over three decades. I’m not starting a new duo. Marie will always be irreplaceable. However, I’m really lucky to have found an amazing voice and a brilliant performer in Lena Philipsson .

Roxette – ‘Listen To Your Heart’

I co-wrote Lena’s first major hit back in 1986 and she’s one of the brightest shining stars Sweden has ever known. I’m extremely proud she wants to join me in my trek to keep the Roxette legacy alive.”

2025 is going to be an amazing year for the fans of the band and also the band itself, as they finally get on the stage and Per Gessle will do the thing that he loves the most, which is performing in front of their audience. They would be joined on the stage by Ms Lena Philipsson, who happens to be a Swedish Singer and Megastar.

Lena says about the tour: “I’m both excited and thrilled about embarking on this tour. I really look forward to working with Per – he is a phenomenal songwriter and a never-ending musical force.”

The band Roxette is going to have the members namely, Magnus “Norpan” Eriksson, Christoffer Lundquist, Magnus Börjeson, Jonas Isacsson, Dea Norberg and Clarence Öfwerman.

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Roxette will be coming to Australia in March 2025. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.com.au.

Per Gessle Confirms Lena Philipsson As The New Singer of Roxette

by Paul Cashmere on May 3, 2024

Lena Philipsson will front Roxette for the 2025 Australian tour. Per Gessle has confirmed Lena following the passing of co-founder Marie Fredrikkson in 2019.

Lena Philipsson has had more than two dozen singles and eight albums since her first record ‘Boy’ in 1987.

Per says: “This is all about my Roxette songs, this huge bundle of music and lyrics I’ve been writing for well over three decades. I’m not starting a new duo. Marie will always be irreplaceable. However, I’m really lucky to have found an amazing voice and a brilliant performer in Lena Philipsson.

I co-wrote Lena’s first major hit back in 1986 and she’s one of the brightest shining stars Sweden has ever known. I’m extremely proud she wants to join me in my trek to keep the Roxette legacy alive.”

Lena says: “I’m both excited and thrilled about embarking on this tour. I really look forward to working with Per – he is a phenomenal songwriter and a never-ending musical force.”

The Roxette band will consist of Christoffer Lundquist, Magnus Börjeson, Magnus “Norpan” Eriksson, Dea Norberg as well as original Roxette icons Clarence Öfwerman and Jonas Isacsson.

Roxette announce new Australian tour five years after tragedy

It's been almost a decade since Swedish pop rock icons Roxette last performed Down Under, but founding member Per Gessle has confirmed he'll be returning to Australia for a series of shows in 2025.

But while his friend and lead singer, Marie Fredriksson, sadly passed away in 2019 after a long health battle, Gessle assured Today Extra this new tour is not about "reinventing Roxette".

"It was devastating for all of us when Marie passed away, she was ill for a very long time, since 2002," he told Richard Wilkins.

"We were prepared for it, but it was really tough, so I didn't really know what to do with the legacy."

So in the years since Fredriksson's passing, Gessle said he considered his options and whether it was right to bring someone else in to sing lead vocals alongside him.

But he wanted to be very clear - this was not him replacing Fredriksson, but rather paying homage to the classic Roxette hits audiences around the world know and love.

"I'm not starting a new Roxette or a new band or anything like that, I'm just doing a tour, keeping the Roxette song catalogue rolling," he said.

"And I've got the old classic band back together as well, so I think it's going to be great."

While Gessle would no doubt do an amazing job singing all the hits like It Must Have Been Love , Joyride, Listen to Your Heart and Fading Like a Flower by himself, there's just something special about hearing those tunes as a harmony.

And that's why he invited his long-time collaborator Lena Philipsson to join him on this upcoming tour.

"She's been a friend of mine since the '80s and I actually wrote her first song, ( Kärleken är evig) which was her first big hit in Sweden," he said.

"And she's a tremendous singer, she's a little older, just like me and an amazing performer, so I think she's just the perfect match for this project."

Roxette's 2025 Australian tour will kick off in March with presale tickets available from next Wednesday, May 8

Start of the PG Roxette era

An era is over. Another one is born.

With the birth of PG Roxette, Per Gessle will continue the adventure he and Marie Fredriksson began, just over 35 years ago. Together with members from the classic Roxette band and a sound echoing somewhere between “Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” Gessle returns to the musical peak of his life – with a new album and plans for a tour.

Per Gessle says:

Since the 80’s, my whole life has been spinning around Roxette and to this day it’s still what excites me the most. There are millions of people out there who still love the band so of course I want to keep our music alive.

After all there are only two options with Roxette: Either to put the lid on or to continue in some shape or form. I’m so proud of this body of work and I love working with these people.

When I started to write, my ambition was to try to create a sibling to ”Look Sharp!” and “Joyride” – and that’s actually exactly how it sounds.

It’s impossible to replace Marie and that was never my intention. Our Roxette era was an unbelievable fantasy that we got to share together. I’m excited to be able to continue this journey, but in a different way. Needless to say that if Marie was still here, we’d be doing this together.

Next up is the release of the PG Roxette album and eventually a tour with both new music and old Roxette material in the setlist.

I’m super proud of all the amazing recordings Roxette did and the new material really feels incredible. It’s not always that easy to re-invent yourself when you’ve been doing this for as long as I have with a huge body of work as a result. Sometimes you feel you repeat yourself, but then suddenly you tread on unfamiliar ground and you get curious in a wonderful way. That’s when I feel this is my life, this is what I do best, this is where I belong.

The PG Roxette album is set to release mid September, with a first single out end of May.

Per is working with PG Roxette alongside his upcoming unplugged tour in Sweden, which starts April 21.

Plan Your Visit

Roxette – Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle – came out of Sweden in the late 80’s. Their game was pop, and their mission was to conquer the world. With 33 chart-busting singles and total record sales exceeding 90 million, it seems safe to say “mission accomplished”.

They entered the world of pop with “The Look” in 1989, followed up with the mighty ballad “Listen To Your Heart” the same year, the classic “It Must Have Been Love” in 1990, the über-platinum “Joyride” album in 1991, and their first World Tour. For the next ten years they were on top of the charts somewhere in the world, the constant flow of hit singles and albums resulting in staggering record sales.

On December 9 2019, Marie Fredriksson’s 17-year-long battle with cancer came to an end and she sadly passed away. Roxette’s legacy is forever written in the hearts of generations of music lovers around the globe; past, present and those to come.

Boom Crash Opera

Originally a five-piece formed in Melbourne in 1985, Australian rock band Boom Crash Opera, like many before them, got their grounding from the pub rock circuit.

Power vocalist Dale Ryder was backed by trademark chant style vocals from the other bandmembers, including group co-founders and writing partners guitarist/bassist Richard Pleasance and guitarist Peter Farnan (credited also as executive producers), alongside producer Alex Sadkin, who tragically died shortly after he finished working on the band’s 1987 self-titled debut.

Keyboardist Greg O’Connor and drummer Peter Maslen completed the BCO lineup.
