Materials & Durability

Before I start raving about the organizational side of the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack , let’s first take a look at what it is made of and if it is built to last.

Even with a deep dive into what this travel backpack is made of, the only answer you can find is polyester. There is no reference to denier rating or whether the polyester is coated, it just says polyester.

Polyester is an excellent material for a travel backpack to be made of. It is hard-wearing, naturally water-resistant, and abrasion-resistant. But, it is hard to tell how good it is without a denier rating which denotes thickness.

One thing I can say is that the main part of the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack is thick and tough. It is a backpack that is built to last and can look as good as new after up to 4 years of use, which is incredible considering the price.

The straps, however, can rip and tear quite quickly in some cases, but this is rare. The metal zippers are reliable too but they can unzip on their own, which can be a little infuriating!

So, you have loaded up the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack with everything from your laptop to tablet, phone, laptop accessories, clothes, and travel documents, is it comfortable to carry? Let’s have a look.

Firstly, this laptop backpack only comes with shoulder straps. There is no waist strap or sternum strap, which goes hand in hand with the price, but does this affect comfort?

The back panel is padded for back support and comes with a multi-panel airflow system to ensure that you do not overheat when walking around an airport or to a meeting. The soft multi-panel ventilated padding is excellent.

The straps are adjustable and well padded. For most people, this makes the backpack comfortable to carry around when fully loaded. Some people with larger shoulders may find that the straps are a little thin and dig into them a bit!

If you are traveling with a small suitcase as your carry-on luggage , the handy pass-through luggage strap means you can slide the backpack onto your wheely suitcase. This makes navigating busy places and standing in queues a lot more comfortable.

Finally, the backpack also features a foam padded top handle for grab-and-go situations, like moving through security.

Storage Space & Organization

This is the category where the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack really shines. Let’s take a deeper look!

Storage Space

This is quite a small backpack with just 28 liters of packing space which is spread over 3 compartments. It is very much the perfect size for work and short trips away, it is not a backpack that you can throw everything in for a week away!

It works perfectly alongside a small carry-on suitcase but standing alone, you are going to struggle to squeeze in enough clothes for more than 2 nights away.

Organization

This backpack has more pockets than you can shake a stick at. Let’s work from the back to the front so you can get an idea.

The back compartment is a padded laptop compartment that will hold a 15.6-inch laptop, any size laptop above this, like a gaming laptop will not fit. Inside you will also find a tablet sleeve and you can secure your 15-inch laptop with the velcro strap provided.

Next up is the main compartment which has enough space for clothes, camera gear, headphones, and more, just not too much of them. Here is where you will find the link to the external USB charger port where you can connect a battery pack to the built-in charging cable inside!

Yes, this is a backpack with USB charging. The built-in USB charging port sits on the outside of the backpack and you can plug into the USB charging port to charge your phone or tablet on the go!

The front compartment is an organizational panel with a key fob hook, pen pockets, sleeves for your phone, and space for notebooks too.

Then you have the side pockets which are great water bottle holders and can hold larger reusable bottles too. To top it off, there is a small front stash zipper pocket and an anti-theft pocket built into the back panel which is great for valuables like your passport and wallet.

As you can see there is a pocket for everything in this backpack so keeping your things organized is about as easy as it gets. With smart extra features like a hidden pocket for valuables and a USB port, it is a hard backpack to beat!

Versatility

Versatility is a category where the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack doesn’t do so well, and the reason why is in the name.

The is a bag designed to help you travel with your tech to work or on planes and trains with organizational efficiency. It is incredibly fit for this purpose but it is not made for much else.

If you were to take this bag hiking and it rained, everything would get wet. It is not waterproof, and while the polyester fabric is water-repellent, the seams and zippers are not. Water will seep in with ease.

Overall these bags are great to travel and commute with but not much else. This is fine with us as that is exactly what they are made to do.

Value For Money

When it comes to value for money, these backpacks are honestly hard to beat. The retail price is just $30, which is about as affordable as backpacks get these days, but, you are getting a load more with this one.

Between having a compartment or pocket for everything to being a backpack with USB charging, an anti-theft pocket, that is comfy to carry, and made from durable tear-resistant polyester, it is an absolute bargain at this incredible price.

The Matein Travel Laptop Backpack has done pretty well on our rating system getting a score of 76/100.

The only place where it lost some points was in the storage and versatility category.

Having zips that unzip by themselves will get annoying and it is a laptop backpack for travel through and through, it is not for any other adventures.

Overall, we love the Matein Travel Laptop Backpack as it comes with everything a travel laptop backpack should have, and for an amazingly affordable price.

To be so affordable and have the features of a backpack that costs 4 times as much is pretty amazing.

Between the organizational system, multiple compartments, and more pockets than you can bother to count, to the padded back panel, solid straps, and durable build, it is very hard to beat.

The only downside is that the affordability does give rise to some quality issues like the zippers undoing on their own, straps fraying on occasion, limited space for clothes, and it not being so versatile.

But, for $30, all of these are things we can happily live with!

How To Wash A Laptop Backpack

Do you need to wash your laptop backpack? If you take your laptop backpack with you everywhere - like we do - then chances are, it’ll get a little dirty after a while. From spills on the outside to gunk in the zipper, sometimes backpacks need a little freshening-up. 

Most laptop backpacks don’t need to get cleaned very often, especially if they have stain-resistant fabric, like Knack Packs do. And you shouldn’t wash them very often, as scrubbing, rubbing, and the use of cleaning products can potentially remove important coatings, break down fibers, and remove dye from the backpack. 

In this article, we’re going to cover how to safely wash the outside and inside of your backpack so that you don’t wear down or damage any fabrics, linings, hardware, or other backpack materials.

Hand-washing vs. machine washing

Since this article details how to hand wash a high-end laptop backpack like a Knack Pack - as opposed to a simple, formless sack like a child’s book bag - we don’t recommend machine washing at all. Laptop backpacks are made out of a variety of different materials, and it’s difficult to know how the rough nature of a machine wash will impact them. Even if a manufacturer’s care label says that machine washing is safe, a machine could damage the hardware and tangle up backpack straps. 

Caring for backpack fabric

Before you wash your backpack, you should always check your backpack’s care instructions and product specifications to make sure that you’re not about to use any cleaning product that could damage the fabric or fabric lining. For your convenience, here’s a quick guide to some of the common backpack fabrics and how to care for them:

How to care for nylon

When cleaning nylon fabric, stick with a very gentle dish soap, and only wipe the fabric with a soft, clean cloth. Nylon can never be dry cleaned, because dry cleaning solvents will actually melt the fabric. Bleach can also melt nylon, so make sure that there’s no bleach in any cleaning products. That said, untreated nylon repels water and stains better than polyester, so you shouldn’t need to do too much scrubbing in the first place. 

How to care for polyester

You should clean polyester in the same way that you clean nylon fabric: with a gentle dish soap and a soft, clean cloth. Even though polyester can be dry cleaned, we don’t recommend it. At Knack, we carefully treat polyester fabric with several coatings that improve water and stain repellent properties while still maintaining a soft feel. 

How to care for leather

You should clean any leather with a damp cloth and specialty leather cleaner. We like to use dubbin, which is a wax product that can soften, condition, and waterproof leather. That said, Knack Packs use napa leather, which is naturally stain and water resistant, so you shouldn’t need any products beyond a damp cloth for cleaning.

How to wash your laptop backpack

What you’ll need.

• A very mild soap (like Dawn or Palmolive)
• A small, clean, very soft-bristle brush (like a toothbrush)
• A handful of clean washcloths

Steps to wash a laptop backpack

• Unzip all the pockets. Turn your backpack upside-down and shake out crumbs over a trash can. Brush the interior of every pocket with your hands to make sure you get everything.  Tip: Use packing cubes and shoe bags to keep your backpack dirt-free.  

• Clean the friction areas. The shoulder straps and back panel of your backpack have more exposure to sweat. Make sure to wipe these areas with your damp cloth. 
• Spot-treat . Do you have some stains or sticky areas that need extra attention? Dilute some mild soap in water (about one teaspoon of soap per one cup of water). Dampen a washcloth and then apply to the problem area. Rub gently until the stain or stickiness is gone. Then, wipe up the soapy area with a purely water-dampened cloth. 

• Clean the inside of the bag. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the inside fabric. Avoid using soapy water, as the soap can be difficult to remove later. Since Knack Packs have an anti-microbial and stain-resistant interior lining, they’ll never smell or stain. 
• Air dry. It’s always best to let your backpack air dry. Hang it up somewhere with good airflow. If you’re in a hurry, you can use a hair dryer on very low - or no - heat to expedite the drying process. Better yet, put your backpack in front of a fan at room temperature. Do not put your backpack in the dryer. 

What not to do when washing a backpack

Don’t use bleach. Bleach can destroy color and, like we said before, can melt nylon. Just stay away from it. And if you planned to use bleach for sanitizing your backpack, keep reading. We’re going to cover a safer way below. 

Don’t use high heat. Heat can make nylon wrinkle, and can destroy helpful fabric coatings. Aim to only use cool water and cool or room-temperature air for drying. 

Don’t leave soap on the backpack. Soap is great for those extra-dirty areas, but again, it can break down fabric and fabric coatings. Whenever you wipe your backpack with soapy water, make sure that you're re-wipe with a soap-free, dampened cloth. 

How to clean mold out of a backpack

If your backpack looks or smells moldy, make a solution of one teaspoon white distilled vinegar in one cup of water. Dampen a cloth with the solution, then take your backpack outside (so you can avoid breathing in any mold) and wipe it down. Vinegar is great for killing mold, and the vinegar smell will go away once it dries. 

How to disinfect a backpack

You can disinfect the surfaces of your backpack by spraying it with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Fill a spray bottle and make sure that the nozzle is in spray mode, not stream. Spray until it’s damp for 30 seconds. Once it’s dry, you’re good to go. 

How to clean serious stains

Red wine and oil stains can be pretty stubborn. These stains are nearly non-existent on Knack Packs, as we’ve thoroughly designed Knack Packs with stain-resistant materials. But if your backpack does encounter such a blemish, you may want to use a fabric spot cleaner like a Tide stick. Follow the fabric spot cleaner instructions, and be sure to try and remove all of the residue afterwards. Alternatively, apply a small amount of laundry detergent and rub gently. Remove all of the laundry detergent with a damp cloth afterwards.
