The 3 types of Oceania Cruises ships, explained

Gene Sloan

Among upscale cruise lines, Oceania Cruises has one of the simplest fleets.

All six of the ships that the Miami-based line currently operates fall into one of just two groups, known as "classes" in cruise industry lingo: the Oceania class and the Regatta class.

Each of these two groups is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Oceania also has two more vessels on order that will make up a new, third class of ships at the line. But the first of these vessels, which together will be known as the Allura class, doesn't arrive until next spring.

An introduction to Oceania Cruises ships

Oceania Cruises is an upscale line — that is, it offers a higher level of service and aims for a higher-end customer than mass-market brands such as Norwegian Cruise Line , which is owned by the same parent company. Like all upscale lines, it operates smaller, less crowded (and pricier) vessels than you'll find at the more mass-market brands.

At 66,084 tons, Oceania's two biggest ships currently in operation, Marina and Riviera, are less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian vessels and just a third the size of the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises . They also hold far fewer passengers — just 1,250 apiece, assuming two people per cabin.

Unveiled about a decade ago, the two ships make up what is known as the Oceania class at Oceania, and — for a few months more, at least — they are the leading lights of the Oceania fleet.

The four other ships that Oceania currently has in operation (Nautica, Insignia, Regatta and Sirena) are significantly smaller and older than the Oceania-class ships, and they hold far fewer passengers. They make up what is known as the Regatta class at the line.

The relatively small sizes of all six ships as compared to mass-market vessels — and resulting intimacy — is part of what you're paying for when you sail with Oceania. The ships may not have all the gee-whiz deck-top attractions of megaships such as Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas . But they offer serenity at sea in a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels, more high-end restaurants and more elegant accommodations.

The smaller size of the ships also allows them to call at lesser-visited ports around the world that the big ships can't access — one of the big allures of sailing with a smaller-ship line such as Oceania.

Come May 2023, Oceania will be unveiling the first vessel in the new Allura class of ships mentioned above, which will be just a tiny bit bigger than the Oceania-class ships.

Allura class

Ships in class: Vista (coming in 2023); unnamed (coming in 2025).

Size: 67,000 tons.

The Allura-class ships aren't yet sailing, but when they do begin service, they will be the new stars of the Oceania fleet.

The first of the two ships, to be called Vista, is due to arrive in May 2023. It promises an elegance and refinement unlike anything that has been seen before at the line.

At 67,000 tons, the vessel will be a tad bigger than Oceania's last two ships, Marina and Riviera. But it'll carry fewer passengers (1,200 versus 1,250). That means its "space ratio" of space per passenger will be higher.

The space ratio of a ship is considered a measure of how upscale it is, with higher space ratios typically corresponding to more luxurious vessels.

As for decor and amenities, Oceania has promised an "evolution" of the intimate, residential-style interior venues for which its ships are known. Vista will retain such Oceania signatures as a Grand Staircase at its center and a Grand Lounge that serves as a central meeting point, as well as a martini bar, Aquamar Spa and a Horizons observation lounge.

The top deck of the ship will revolve around a tranquil pool area, and — as is the case with all Oceania ships — the ship's interior will have a full-blown casino with an accompanying bar.

Vista also will feature a larger variety of cabin sizes than earlier Oceania vessels, ranging from standard balcony cabins measuring 291 square feet (the largest standard balcony cabins in the industry, according to the line) to an array of suites that measure up to 2,400 square feet.

Among new cabin categories will be Oceania's first solo cabins — six in all. They'll measure a spacious 270 square feet and have their own balconies, something that is relatively rare for solo cabins on ocean ships.

In fact, every cabin on Vista will be a balcony cabin — a first for the line. Every cabin will have either a full balcony or a more limited French balcony. The ship will have no windowless "inside" cabins or balconyless "ocean-view" cabins.

The solo cabins, notably, also will be concierge-level cabins, which means they will come with access to a private, keycard-accessed concierge lounge and complimentary use of the ship's Spa Terrace.

In another upgrade as compared to Oceania's other ships, Vista will boast 12 different culinary options for passengers — four of which will be new concepts for the brand.

The newcomers include Ember, serving "inventive American" cuisine, and wellness-focused Aquamar Kitchen (think smoothies, organic "power bowls" and yellowfin tacos with white cabbage slaw). Also new will be the Culinary Center Dining Room, an ocean-view space offering food-and-wine pairing experiences that will tie to the ship's cooking classroom. A new Bakery at Barista outlet will serve fresh-baked pastries.

Signature Oceania eateries making a return include the Polo Grill steakhouse, Italian-serving Toscana and upscale Asian venue Red Ginger.

A second, as-yet-unnamed Allure-class vessel is due to debut in 2025.

Oceania class

Ships in class: Riviera (2012); Marina (2011).

Size: 66,084 tons.

largest oceania cruise ship

The two Oceania-class ships are the current belles of the ball in the Oceania fleet (at least until the arrival of the Allura-class ships). They are newer and bigger than the four other Oceania vessels currently sailing, with bigger and more elegant cabins, and a wider array of high-end eateries.

You'll find the Oceania-class ships feel more spacious than the line's four other vessels, and they have an overall elegance that takes them to a higher level. That said, they also carry a lot more passengers than Oceania's other ships — 1,250 as compared to 684.

If you're the sort of person that prefers traveling in smaller groups, the line's smaller Regatta-class vessels might be a better fit.

Overall, the Oceania-class vessels have a residential feel, which is something they share with all Oceania ships. You can sit back with a book in a wing-back leather chair in the English-style libraries on the ships, or sip a martini while listening to a piano player in their elegant Horizons observation lounges. The main pool areas on the vessels are classy and relaxing, with teak decking and rows of plush chaise lounge chairs facing sparkling pools.

Each of the vessels has four superb specialty restaurants that are in keeping with Oceania's foodie focus — none of which comes with an extra fee. They are the Polo Grill steakhouse, Italian Toscana, Asian-fusion Red Ginger and French Jacques (the latter the creation of famed chef Jacques Pépin, a culinary adviser to the line).

In addition, each ship has a main Grand Dining Room that also has a Jacques Pépin tie-in; he created the venue's signature dishes. The restaurants serve up Continental cuisine with menus changing daily.

Also for foodies, Riviera and Marina each have a high-end cooking classroom where passengers can learn how to make dishes themed around an ingredient or the regional cuisine of your cruise destination. It's a feature you won't find on the line's smaller ships.

Among other enrichment offerings (a big part of the Oceania formula) on the ships are art classes taught by an Artist in Residence in a dedicated space called the Artist's Loft. In addition, each of the ships has a theater where guest speakers lecture regularly, often on topics related to the destinations the ships visit. The theaters also are the setting for evening performances by an ever-changing array of guest entertainers such as pianists, classical string quartets and vocalists.

A swanky spa, outdoor running track, golf putting green, pickleball court and even croquet and bocce courts round out the activities available on board.

Cabins on the vessels also have a residential feel and are much more spacious than the cabins you'll find on the line's smaller ships. Standard balcony cabins, for instance, measure a generous 291 square feet, which the line boasts makes them some of the largest at sea.

Unlike the soon-to-debut Allura-class ships, these vessels also have ocean-view cabins, which measure 240 square feet, and windowless "inside" cabins, which measure 174 square feet. They typically are priced lower than balcony cabins and can be a good entry-level option for passengers looking to save.

The ships also are loaded with bigger suites, some as big as 2,000 square feet, with elegant decor crafted by famed designer Dakota Jackson and furnishings from Ralph Lauren Home.

Regatta class

Ships in class: Nautica (2000), Sirena (1999), Regatta (1998), Insignia (1998).

Size: 30,277 tons.

largest oceania cruise ship

The Regatta-class ships have long been at the core of the Oceania fleet, and they continue to be highly popular with Oceania fans. About half the size of the line's Oceania-class ships, the four vessels in the series offer a much more intimate atmosphere than the Oceania-class ships with fewer bars, restaurants and entertainment areas.

Like the Oceania-class ships, the Regatta-class vessels have a residential feel, with interiors that revolve around small central reception halls with grand staircases that lead to a single deck with bars, lounges, a casino and a main restaurant.

The main restaurant, the Grand Dining Room, is where passengers dine most nights. But each of the ships also has one of Oceania's signature Polo Grill steakhouses and a Toscana restaurant serving Italian cuisine — both located near the tops of the ships. That's just half the number of specialty restaurants that you'll find on the Oceania-class ships.

Each of the ships, at the top, also is home to a relaxing outdoor pool area, as well as an interior observation lounge called Horizons and a casual eatery called the Terrace Cafe. Each of the vessels also has a small spa with steam rooms, salon and fitness center, as well as a small library. Additional top-deck features include a small putting green area.

Cabins on Regatta-class ships are notably smaller than those you'll find on the line's newer ships, with balcony cabins measuring just 216 square feet. Despite regular updates, they also can feel a bit dated as compared to newer Oceania ships.

All four of the Regatta-class vessels are now more than 20 years old, and they are showing their age in some areas.

That said, they remain wonderful vessels on many levels — one being that their small size allows them to access ports around the world that bigger ships can't visit. This allows them to sail more-interesting itineraries, in many cases, than you'll find on bigger ships.

Along those lines, Oceania often deploys the Regatta-class ships on its more far-flung, destination-rich itineraries, including some of the cruise industry's longest around-the-world cruises.

largest oceania cruise ship

For the coming year, for instance, Insignia is scheduled to sail a 200-day world cruise out of San Francisco (starting on Jan. 15) that will bring stops on five continents including Antarctica.

In general, the Regatta-class ships appeal to cruisers who care more about the destinations they will be visiting than about having a lot of onboard options for dining, entertainment and activities.

Regatta-class trivia: The four Regatta-class ships and the four vessels in the fleet of rival line Azamara are sister vessels. They all once belonged to long-defunct Renaissance Cruises. You'll sometimes hear cruising aficionados refer to them by their Renaissance-related class name, the R class.

Bottom line

The Oceania Cruises fleet is relatively easy to understand. As of now, there are just two types of Oceania ships operating, a number that will grow to three in the coming year. All the ships have the same upscale, residential feel, with the main differences among the ships being their size and the number of eateries and bars you'll find on board, as well as the size of their cabins.

If a spacious cabin and more restaurant and bar choices are what matters to you most when cruising, the line's Oceania-class ships or soon-to-debut Allura-class ships are the most logical choice. If you prefer a smaller, more intimate environment with fewer people and don't mind giving up some amenities to have it, the Regatta-class vessels might be a better fit.

Oceania Cruises (oceaniacruises.com) is a Miami -based passenger shipping company operating a fleet of upper-premium, mid-sized vessels. Between April 2007 and September 2014, Oceania was owned by Apollo Management. The company's owner since 2014 is NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) - also the owner of NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line and RSSC-Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Oceania as a cruise line brand offers a luxury product with relatively shorter itineraries but is also well-known for its Around The World voyages lasting up to 180 days.

Since January 2023, Oceania's President and CEO is Frank A. Del Rio (Frank Del Rio Jr/former NCLH's President's son), who succeeded Howard Sherman. The latter succeeded (in January 2022) Bob Binder (Oceania's co-founder, currently NCLH's Vice Chairman). Between 2016-2021, Howard Sherman was NCLH's Executive VP (Onboard Revenue and Destination Services). Oceania's and RSSC-Regent's Presidents both report to NCL's President (currently Harry Sommer).

As a travel brand, Oceania is widely recognized for having the finest cuisine at sea.

Company history and changes

The Oceania cruise line was founded in 2002 by travel industry veterans Frank Del Rio (former VP of Renaissance Cruises/1989-2001- defunct ) and Joseph Watters (Independent Director of the brokerage company MarineMax).

Oceania initially chartered the ex-Renaissance vessel "R Two" (from Cruiseinvest), which in October 2002 was renamed Insignia . In April 2003, the boat was 3-month chartered to TRM France (travel agency), and during that period Oceania had no fleet. On June 15, 2003, the company restarted services with 2 vessels - Insignia (renamed Regatta ) and a new vessel (R One, sistership of Regatta, also chartered from Cruiseinvest) that debuted as the current Insignia.

At the end of 2005, a third (ex-Renaissance) vessel entered Oceania's fleet when from CruiseInvest was chartered R-Five (renamed Nautica ). At the naming ceremony, Frank del Rio announced a plan to add a fourth boat ( Marina ) in July 2007. However, this didn't come to pass.

The majority of Oceania's stock was sold in February 2007 to the NYC -based Apollo Management. The next month Oceania made a memorandum agreement with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct two 1260-passenger newbuilds . The contract was finalized in June 2007, with delivery dates scheduled for January and July 2011. The contract also included an option for a 3rd unit of the same design/sistership to be delivered in May 2012, but Oceania declined that option.

After being leased out to Hapag-Lloyd (as Columbus 2) for two years, Insignia returned to Oceania in 2014. In May 2014, Oceania and Fincantieri were close to making a deal on two additional ships. On September 2, 2014, NCLH purchased "Prestige Cruise Holdings" (the parent company of Oceania and RSSC-Regent) for USD 3,025 billion, thus becoming the official owner of all vessels in both fleets.

On November 25, 2014, NCLH revealed an agreement with Princess Cruises to purchase Ocean Princess (now Sirena ) for Oceania, upon delivery in March 2016. The ship underwent a 35-day drydock refit (US$40 million) in Marseille France and was renamed "MS Sirena".

In September 2018, Oceania partnered with Luggage Forward (USA-based luggage shipping company). The new service allows passengers to ship their luggage doorstep-to-stateroom (and back home again), thus truly traveling light. Luggage Forward provides premier door-to-door shipping services to 200 countries worldwide (including over 150 cruise ports). The company's own team of Customs specialists handles the country-specific paperwork to ensure on-time deliveries. Travelers can track the shipment in real-time. Luggage Forward service can be booked online or via phone. Rates are fixed, without additional charges or fees applied. Luggage's arrival on time and safety is guaranteed. Luggage Forward offers money-back plus US$500 on-time guarantee.

On June 6, 2022, NCLH announced an expansion of its fleetwide sustainability program "Sail & Sustain". Extending its animal welfare policy, the shipowner is now fully committed to responsible animal food sourcing practices (regarding pork, chicken, eggs, and seafood) within the global fleet's supply chain. The goal is by the year 2025, fleetwide (NCL, Oceania, Regent) to be sourced only cage-free eggs, crate-free pork, certified sustainable seafood, and chicken purchased from American and Canadian suppliers who meet GAP (Global Animal Partnership) standards.

In April 2023, Oceania signed a partnership with the 2014-established premium brand "Chapter 7 Whisky" to create an exclusive 20-year aged Chapter 7 special cask whisky (batch of a total of 304 bottles) to celebrate its 20th anniversary as well as the launch of the Vista ship. The exclusive bottles are available for onboard purchase (via Harding+/part of Harding Retail UK) only during Oceania Vista's inaugural season (2023).

In June 2023 Oceania introduced fleetwide a rare collection of premium vintage wines (80 new labels) from winegrowing regions in France, Italy and Chile. The new collection includes varieties like Moet & Chandon Cuvee Dom Perignon (from Epernay), Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Classe (from Pauillac), Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore (from Tuscany), Vina Errazuriz Kai Carmenere (from Chile's Aconcagua Valley). The rare wines can be tasted at all shipboard restaurants and bars as well as in the staterooms (fleetwide).

In August 2023, Jason Worth was appointed VP of International Sales (newly created position) who reports to Nikki Upshaw (Oceania's Senior VP of Global Sales since 2011, in 2001-2011 employed as Director of Global Sales and Marketing for ResidenSea The World . Jason Worth is with Oceania since 2011, and in the period 2019-22 served as VP of Sales for Australia and New Zealand.

All Oceania-operated ships are currently Marshall Islands - flagged and registered in Majuro .

On January 8, 2019, Oceania's parent company NCLH announced a shipbuilding order with Fincantieri for two units planned for Oceania. Both vessels are of the new ALLURA-Class - the next stage of the fleet expansion project OceaniaNEXT. The new boats are designed and built by Fincantieri (in Ancona Italy ), with scheduled deliveries in 2023 ( Vista ) and 2025 ( Allura ).

Each of the 67000 GT-ton ALLURA-Class vessels (Vista, and Allura) has max capacity 1470 passengers plus 800 staff/crew. These are mid-sized ships similar in design and amenities to Oceania's 2011-2012-built Riviera and Marina .

The contract price for each of the newbuilds is ~EUR 575 million (per unit). NCLH obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the total contract price, subject to certain Italian government approvals.

As of 2019, NCLH had 10 ship orders with planned deliveries thru 2027. Of those, 7x units were for NCL-Norwegian, 2x for Oceania, 1x for RSSC-Regent.

Cruising experience

The Oceania cruise line serves the industry's upper-premium market, and as a brand is positioned between its luxury and premium segments. The shipboard experience is country club-like, the atmosphere is elegant and relaxed, never formal or stuffy. The company's customers are well-traveled, looking for top-class cuisine, personalized service, destination-focused travel experience.

Oceania offers exotic itineraries to remote destinations worldwide. Often, port calls are with overnight stays so passengers can enjoy local cuisine, nightlife, culture.

Oceania's current Executive Culinary Directors (since March 2024) are Alexis Quaretti and Eric Barale (both French master chefs) who succeeded Jacques Pepin. Master Chef Pepin (now Oceania's Executive Culinary Adviser) created a premier menu of gourmet delights highlighted during each shipboard dinner. In April 2024, Giada Pamela De Laurentiis (1970-born Italian chef, entrepreneur, writer, and TV personality) was appointed the company's Brand and Culinary Ambassador, as well as Co-Chairman of Oceania’s Culinary Advisory Board (together with Jacques Pepin). Giada De Laurentiis is also Oceania Vista ship's godmother.

Oceania ships serve an extensive vegan menu and offer smoothie bars with cold-pressed raw juices at Lido Deck.

Pool Deck's raw juice and smoothie bar serve a variety of healthy drinks - like cold brew lattes, green smoothies, chia cashew yogurt bowl, acai berry bowl. Oceania's new vegan menu has over 250 dishes and is featured in Main Dining Rooms of all ships. It includes appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, and desserts. Vegetarian, kosher and gluten-free meals are also offered.

The vegan menu has 5 dishes and 4 sides offered at each breakfast, such as Spanish tortilla dish (tofu, potatoes, onions), vanilla waffles (fresh berries), cream of wheat or oatmeal, apricot and pistachio muffins, sides (Lyonnaise potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, vegan sausage). At lunch are offered Italian salad (assorted greens), Tuscan-style bean soup, toasted garlic bread, spinach-stuffed involtini (with pasta and tapenade sauce), tofu, chocolate ricotta pie. The dinner menu is 5-course and include truffle-flavored parsnip soup, quinoa salad, vegetable tartare, Thai red curry with rice, shortbread dessert (strawberries, passion fruit cream).

OceaniaNEXT ship refurbishments (fleet-renovation project)

In August 2018 was announced OceaniaNEXT fleet renovation project budgeted USD 100 million. It includes drydock refurbishments of all four R-Class liners - Regatta (September 2019), Insignia (December 2018), Sirena (May 2019) and Nautica (June 2020).

As supervision company for the project was contracted Studio DADO Inc (Miami-based designer firm). Other contractors include Baker and Donghia (furnishings), and Rubelli and Kravet (fabrics, custom-made carpets). As result, the fleet was expanded with 1368 new staterooms, and all shipboard restaurants, bars, and lounges will be redesigned and redecorated. New public spaces on these ships include open-floor designed Lobby with Reception Hall (lower level) with Upper Hall (2nd level). They are connected with Grand Staircase (decorated with railings and balustrades) and featuring a large crystal chandelier (with hanging pieces of hand-painted glass).

Grand Dining Room (aft restaurant on Deck 5) on each ship received new premium dining furniture (leather chairs with metallic bronze threading) and new crystal chandelier. Martinis (piano bar lounge on Deck 5) was redesigned, new silver-white marble bar top and walnut paneling were added.

All staterooms were completely overhauled (redesigned and re-furnished) and upgraded with custom-made furniture, polished wood, stone finishes, designer accessories, smart HDTVs (infotainment system with movies-on-demand and Internet), USB ports, LED lighting. All cabin bathrooms were overhauled and received new tiling, surfaces, fixtures, designer accessories, vanities, glass shower enclosures. Penthouse-Vista-Owner suite bathrooms were enlarged and upgraded with Carrara marble tops, onyx, polished granite.

Works on the fleetwide refurb project involved over 1000 artisans and craftsmen and resulted in 1368 new cabins, 8000 new light fixtures, 12000 new sofas and chairs.

In September 2018, as part of OceaniaNEXT program, the company's website was redesigned and upgraded. Now customers (travel agents and cruise passengers) can use shipboard credits before departure. OBC can be used for purchasing tours/excursions and shipboard activities and amenities (culinary classes, drink packages, specialty dining at the Privee and La Reserve).

As part of OceaniaNEXT, on January 31, 2019, the company announced its partnership with Vero Water (eco-friendly bottled water supplier) to eliminate plastic water bottles fleetwide. In the period April-June 2019, all Oceania liners were outfitted with Vero Water systems eliminating around 3 million plastic bottles annually. By 2020, all Oceania cruise customers are provided complimentary with re-useable Vero Water bottles (Oceania-branded, 1 per person) to be used ashore and after the voyage to take home as a souvenir. The new water bottles will be available on each ship since April 2, 2019 (Riviera), April 19, 2019 (Marina), May 1, 2019 (Regatta), May 19, 2019 (Sirena), May 30, 2019 (Nautica), and June 19, 2019 (Insignia).

In May 2019, by the OceaniaNEXT program were introduced fleetwide 200+ plant-based dining menus. The new items are available (upon request) in "Grand Dining Room" and "Terrace Cafe" at breakfast-lunch-dinner, and also dinner-only in all specialty restaurants.

  • Breakfast items include Banana-Oatmeal Pancakes, Muesli with Pistachios, Avocado Toast on Rustic Bread.
  • Lunch items include Chilled Melon Soup, Korean Kimchi Soup, Wakame-Sesame Salad, Poke Bowl, Penne au Pistou.
  • Dinner items include Green Papaya Kelp Noodle Salad, Roasted Butternut Squash, Sweet Potato-Oat Tarte (with Mushrooms and Truffle Cheddar Sauce), Falafel Fritters, Crespelle alla Fiorentina (with Mushrooms), Green Curry Stir Fry.
  • Pnat-based desserts include Vanilla Mango Ice, Romanoff Vodka-Marinated Strawberries, Berry Pudding with Chantilly Cream, Shortbread (with Cream Cheese and Raspberries).

In 2019, Oceania's new website has greatly improved navigation via groups of 4 tabs (at page top) - "Plan Your Cruise", "Onboard Experiences", "Explore Ashore" and "Ultimate Value". The website's "Travel Agent Center" was also updated (marketing tools, tips, and training, travel advisor benefits). Oceania also launched new pre-cruise savings program, allowing customers booking within 30-days prior departure to receive in advance savings and "Best Price Guarantee". Repeat travel agency bookings are credited back automatically.

Why choose Oceania ships?

  • Cuisine: Oceania's chefs prepare noteworthy cuisine in all onboard restaurants.
  • Destinations: Oceania itineraries offer overnights in top ports and are destination-oriented.
  • Midsize Ships: The deluxe ships of Oceania are quite manageable in size: even the largest one has fewer than 1,300 guests.
  • No Smoking: Oceania vessels are almost entirely smoke-free. There are small, designated areas for smokers.
  • Surprisingly Affordable: Oceania cruises approach true luxury in style, but are quite affordable when it comes to fares.

The sophisticated ambiance of Oceania extends to the entertainment provided onboard. Guests can listen to a jazz band or 12-piece orchestra, watch a cabaret show or enjoy regional entertainment from the ports of call. The line regularly hosts guest lecturers, from former ambassadors to famous authors. Oceania cruises combine the best of new and old, preserving classic traditions, such as afternoon tea while offering contemporary services like 24-hour Internet access.

Oceania voyages are adult-oriented. These are not a good pick for families, particularly those sailing with infants and toddlers. There are no dedicated kids' facilities available onboard, and parents are completely responsible for children's behavior and entertainment. Some teenagers who don't mind the absence of video arcades might enjoy the unique ports of call.

Other advantages of Oceania include:

  • Many Oceania cruises include airfare in pricing.
  • Pre-/postcruise Hotel Collection Packages include private group transfers.
  • There is no dining charge on Oceania Cruises ships, but wine and cocktail prices are relatively high.
  • Guests may bring up to 3 bottles of wine per stateroom from ports of call, but have in mind the corkage fee - it is $25 per bottle to bring wine to the restaurant.
  • Oceania offers shore excursion collections. These have to be reserved prior to sailing and save a lot.
  • Oceania Cruises was the first line to upgrade bedding to the highest standard. Passengers can count on a good sleep on these ships.

Early-booking cruise discounts (OLife Advantage)

Since September 2015, Oceania Cruises offers an extended early booking program (OLife Advantage). Discounts and benefits by this incentive program are available to all Oceania customers booking itineraries in Europe, Alaska and Canada-New England.

OLife Advantage rewards all booked passengers, regardless of stateroom category. The list of bonus perks (complimentary amenities) may include unlimited internet, pre-paid gratuities, onboard credit, free cabin upgrades. The OLife Advantage program also provides free (complimentary) shore excursions per cruise, depending on itinerary's length: 3 tours (itineraries up to 9 days), 4 tours (itineraries 10-13 days) and 5 tours (itineraries 14+ days).

Wavenet (free, high-speed Internet) fleetwide

In April 2018, Oceania Cruises introduced the Wavenet (high-speed internet) fleetwide / on all ships. The service allows faster uploading/downloading of big files, watching Netflix movies, social media sharing, music, and video live streaming (Spotify Facetime, Skype).

Oceania's new Wavenet Internet service is free of charge and unlimited. As for amenities, it is included in the ticket prices for all staterooms (suite and cabin categories) and on all itineraries.

The "Wavenet Prime" (Internet upgrade) is available for purchase at USD 10 pp per day. It allows passengers to stream music, videos, movies.

  • In early-May 2020, Oceania Cruises launched "The Ultimate Sale" promotion, with significant booking price reductions (~70% lower than the brand's regular rates). Promo's fares per person started at USD 999 (inside cabin) and USD 1399 (balcony cabin).

NAUTICA's program for 2021-2022 (fall-Mediterranean, winter-spring-Asia) was canceled. The ship restarts operations in April 2022 (Mediterranean-Europe) following an extensive drydock refurbishment.

REGATTA's "World Cruise 2021" (Los Angeles to Sydney Australia) was canceled. The ship restarts operations in March 2022 (Tahiti French Polynesia) following an extensive drydock refurbishment.

Oceania Cruises to Cuba

In December 2016, the company's owner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings) received permission to operate cruises to Cuba, with two Oceania ships - Marina (starting at the end of 2016) and Regatta (starting in 2017). Cuba currently lacks the infrastructure to support large cruise ships, so the 684-passenger Regatta and 1,258-passenger Marina are small enough to work with what exists there now. Both ships sail a variety of itineraries, including a circumnavigation of Cuba (with stops in Cienfuegos and Havana) and visiting Cuba as part of some Panama Canal transition cruises .

The company offers a number of departures from PortMiami in 2019, including the “Timeless Cuba” itinerary, sailing 7 days with visits to Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos. A twice-offered 10-day cruise adds a visit to Great Stirrup Cay.

The list of passenger shipping lines offering cruises to Cuba included:

  • Carnival Paradise leaving from Tampa Florida - cheapest prices (from USD 480 pp)
  • Royal Caribbean (ship Empress of the Seas , leaving from Miami Florida)
  • Holland America (ship Veendam ) leaving from Fort Lauderdale since December 2017
  • NCL (ship Norwegian Sky , 4-day itineraries with Havana overnights - starting May 2017.
  • MSC Cruises (ship MSC Opera , leaving from Havana)
  • Azamara Cruises (ship on Azamara Quest from Miami)
  • Thomson UK / Marella Cruises (ship Marella Dream ) 7-day, leaving roundtrip from Jamaica (Montego Bay) to Havana
  • Ponant Cruises (superyacht Le Ponant , leaving from Miami Florida)
  • Pearl Seas Cruises (ship Pearl Mist , leaving from Fort Lauderdale Florida)
  • Lindblad Expeditions (chartered sailing ship MS Panorama II, leaving from Havana)
  • Celestyal Cruises (ship Celestyal Crystal , leaving from Havana and Montego Bay Jamaica)
  • Grand Circle Cruise Line (ship MV Clio / ex Tere Moana ) one-way from Miami to Havana, or the reverse from Havana to Miami (embarkation/disembarkation in port Cienfuegos ).
  • International Expeditions (leaving from Havana, charter flights out of Miami)
  • Victory Cruise Lines - MS Victory I - fly-cruises from Miami to Havana (homeport Cienfuegos /departures)

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government to allow ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

IMPORTANT: On June 4, 2019, the US Government announced new regulations (economic sanctions) that ended group travel to Cuba, including via US-homeported cruise liners, effective immediately. The ban relates to "private and corporate aircraft, cruise ships, sailboats, fishing boats, and other similar aircraft and vessels". The US travel restrictions impacted hundreds of pre-scheduled cruise itineraries, which were adjusted to no longer stop in Cuban seaports.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

As part of Oceania's fleetwide revamp, Regatta was completely redesigned in September 2019. Passengers in Veranda Staterooms and Suites will enjoy verandas and spaces ranging from 216 to 1,000 square feet, while Inside and Ocean View cabins are smaller. The ship now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone. No matter which you choose, all staterooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, plus all-new furnishings and marble bathrooms.

The 670 passengers will receive Oceania's signature service, with 400 crew members catering to guests' needs. Recent cruisers noted they rarely encountered crowds in the ship's public areas. The atmosphere aboard Regatta is decidedly adult, as the ship caters to older, affluent cruisers.

Entertainment varies from nightly musical performances to table games at the casino. Dining is also diverse: Regatta offers five venues ranging from the formal dining room to a casual grill. All-new plant-based menu items are also available.

Regatta sails to destinations in Mexico, Asia, Australia and more.

Oceania's Marina accommodates up to 1,250 passengers and employs 800 crew members, maintaining the personalized service that the line is known for.  Marina offers signature amenities like the Aquamar Spa, a casino and a 2,000-book library. Onboard entertainment includes nightly live shows, painting and sketching lessons at the Artist Loft and cooking demos at The Culinary Center. While Marina went through a refurbishment in 2016, the ship will have an updated renovation in late 2023.

Cruisers can choose from seven dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Jacques (with menus crafted by chef Jacques Pépin) and the Asian-inspired eatery Red Ginger, which recent passengers highly recommend.

Similar to its sister ship,  Riviera , cabins range from 174-square-foot Inside staterooms to 2,000-square-foot Suites. Higher category Veranda cabins and Suites come with perks like balconies, access to a Concierge Lounge, in-room iPads and more. All staterooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, full-size bathtubs, and minibars stocked with soda and bottled water.

Oceania Marina sails to destinations in Europe, South America and more.

Launched in 2012, Oceania Riviera is scheduled to complete a refubishment in December 2022. The upgrade will feature new furnishings, remodeled bathrooms, lighting and additional outlets and USB ports.  Oceania Riviera features larger staterooms than the line's older ships. The 1,250-passenger, 800-crew-member ship is identical to Oceania Marina and includes Inside, Ocean View and Veranda staterooms. The ship also offers suites that range from 420 to 2,000 square feet. While all cabins include minibars, full-size bathtubs and flat-screen TVs, suites add perks like 24-hour butler service.

When it's time to dine, cruisers can choose from eight venues. These include options not available on all Oceania ships, like Jacques (French fare) and Red Ginger (Asian-focused dishes). Bar and lounge venues are also varied, with specialty spots mixing martinis, offering wine tastings and serving poolside cocktails.

Other pursuits available on the ship include treatments at the spa, painting at the Artist Loft and cooking classes at The Culinary Center. With amenities and organized events geared toward older cruisers, Riviera isn't a great choice for those traveling with children.

Riviera will split its time between the Middle East,  the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia and more.

Originally launched as a  Princess  ship, the 648-passenger Sirena was revived in 2016 under the Oceania  name. The ship was most recently revamped in 2019 and features many of the amenities found on its sister ships, including the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center and duty-free shopping boutiques.

Sirena's dining venues include the Red Ginger Asian restaurant and Tuscan Steak, both of which require reservations and an additional fee. Passengers can also choose from four more casual dining options included in the cruise fare. Recent guests gave the food on the ship mixed reviews. After dinner, evening entertainment includes musicals and theatrical productions, as well as games at the casino.

Passengers can choose from Inside, Ocean View, Veranda and Suite category cabins. While Inside staterooms start at 160 square feet, those who opt for a suite will find more space and added amenities, such as free internet access and butler service. The ship also now offers solo staterooms for those who are traveling alone.

Oceania Sirena offers sailings in the Caribbean, South America, Europe and some transoceanic itineraries.

Nautica welcomes up to 670 passengers and 400 crew members, so cruisers can expect plenty of attention along with a less congested (and typically kid-free) onboard atmosphere. All cabins are outfitted with flat-screen TVs and minibars, and the majority have private verandas. Oceania Nautica underwent a dramatic, $100 million fleetwide refresh in 2022. With the updated renovation, guests can enjoy freshly revamped Suites, Staterooms and marble bathrooms, plus new fixtures all around the ship.

When it's time to dine, passengers can choose from five restaurants, including the Terrace Cafe and the elegant Grand Dining Room. There are also plant-based gourmet menu items available. Onboard activities are geared toward an older crowd, ranging from afternoon tea to services at the Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center. Nighttime entertainment offerings include musical acts and craft cocktails at the martini bar.

Oceania Nautica sails to various destinations in North America, Asia, Africa and Europe and more.

The 670-passenger Oceania Insignia, which was dramatically redesigned in December 2018, maintains a nearly a 1-to-2 crew-to-passenger ratio, which means staff members can provide personalized attention to guests. The expansive redesign included new marble bathrooms, redesigned suites and staterooms and a facelift for the ship's public spaces.

When it comes to dining, guests can choose between five sit-down venues and sip libations at one of several bars and lounges. Activities on the ship are geared toward older cruisers; they include afternoon tea, board games, a casino and nightly live shows.

Review: Oceania Riviera

Reviewed by Janice Wald Henderson

What is the line?  Oceania Cruises

Name of ship?  Riviera

Passenger occupancy? 1,238

Itinerary? Venice to Athens

Riviera hits the sweet spot for food and wine devotees, delivering exceptional cuisine, wine pairing extravaganzas, and culinary and vintner-driven shore excursions.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Oceania Cruises maintains a strong focus on quality food and wine with complimentary specialty dining. Its loyal clientele, often younger than on luxury lines (Oceania Cruises is ranked premium, with luxury-level cuisine), love to eat and drink in style as they sail the globe. And sail the globe they do, as Oceania’s six ships cover more than 450 destinations. (Vista, Oceania’s newest and most glam ship, debuts in May 2023.) Port-intensive itineraries, including many late-nights and overnights. Among the well-maintained vessels, Riviera and twin Marina rank the largest, and arguably, the most stylish. The two were purpose-built for foodies, showcasing more dining choices and a Culinary Center offering hands-on cooking classes.

Tell us about the ship in general

The 1,238-passenger Riviera was built in 2012 and underwent a massive refurbishment in late 2022, including all staterooms and suites and many public venues. Its smart design emphasizes contemporary cool with lavish flourishes, like the Lalique-embellished grand staircase and gleaming Italian marble. Designed for foodies, this vessel lures connoisseurs with seven complimentary dining venues, mostly astonishingly good. Fares depend on the category of stateroom or suite booked, and can run from budget-minded to as pricey as a luxury line (with similar amenities.) Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center includes a large, well-equipped fitness center and features complimentary wellness lectures and fitness classes, a comprehensive list of treatments and medi-spa services. Come nighttime, passengers move between the casino, bars, and Riviera Lounge for primarily musical revues.

Who is onboard?

Riviera draws an active crowd of repeat guests, mostly American, who indulge well onboard and explore energetically ashore. While 55+ might cover the age range, I saw plenty of couples and groups of friends who looked younger. These cruisers are a friendly bunch and engage with other passengers in bars and lounges. Passengers definitely utilize the fitness center, although I always found a treadmill or free weights when needed. The jogging track draws many cruisers, too, if not to run, then leisurely walk at sunset. Complimentary classes, like yoga, do fill up. I packed casual-to-elegant country-club-ish attire, and fit right in.

Describe the cabins

Staterooms and suites were gutted during the recent redo, receiving a more modern design in tasteful neutral-driven brown and grey hues. Bathrooms were enlarged for all but the largest suites (Oceania, Vista and Owner’s), with passengers losing tubs but gaining oversized showers. The makeover also added better storage space, roomier closets and more USB outlets and power sources.

The variety of staterooms and suites do provide distinctly different experiences. Entry-level inside staterooms are but 174-square-feet yet still possess Riviera signatures, like a custom plush bed and granite and marble bath stocked with Bulgari toiletries. Veranda staterooms kick it up a big notch, with 291 square feet of space including a furnished teak veranda, and a larger bath. Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms are the next notable level, providing a private lounge with a dedicated concierge, complimentary laundry and Grand Dining Room (main restaurant) room service.

I stayed in a Penthouse Suite, the lowest suite level. I loved it. My 440 square feet included a dining table, spacious veranda and access to the Executive Lounge with its concierge and coffee, soft drinks and snacks. I only used the lounge once, but I really appreciated Penthouse amenities, like welcome Champagne, priority restaurant reservations and laundry service. I didn’t interact with my butler other than for breakfast room service, but I liked the idea of  having one. The biggest, fanciest suites are dubbed Oceania, Vista and Owner’s and grouped behind an etched glass door. Those lucky occupants wallow in more than 1,000 square feet and up, with media rooms, indoor and outdoor whirlpool spas and other luxurious appointments.

Tell us about the crew

Enthusiastic servers in lounges and restaurants were keen to please. I actually felt sad saying goodbye to a few. They struck the perfect chord midway between formal and casual. Butlers, who service Penthouse Suites and up, leaned more formal, befitting their roles. Concierges, including those available to all passengers, calmly handled questions about, well, everything. A shoutout to the shore excursion desk, who fielded lots of questions and kept their cool. I came away impressed with the sommeliers, too; they knew their wines and sometimes gently steered me to better selections than what I chose.

What food and drink options are available on board?

The absolutely best aspect (besides the ports) of my sail was the food and wine. There are now seven venues; the newest (which I have yet to experience) is an al fresco trattoria and pizzeria. Reservations are needed for Toscana, Polo Grill, Jacques and La Reserve; passengers are promised at least one reservation in each (other than La Reserve) per cruise. Book as far in advance as possible; once onboard, add your name to waitlists to score additional bookings.

It’s astonishing that all complimentary restaurants use primo ingredients with abandon. You can indulge on lobster or aged prime beef every night. I tried, and liked, many new plant-based plates, such as power bowls with sea vegetables.  Main restaurant Grand Dining Room felt as festive as specialty eateries and delivered sophisticated delicious plates night after night.

I had my favorites. French restaurant Jacques presented exquisite onion soup. Polo Grill steakhouse’s bacon rolls were insane; don’t do as I did, which is eat the entire breadbasket before the big beefy main event. If Asian-fusion Red Ginger ever loses the lobster pad Thai, I think passengers (including me) would revolt. I often revisited Toscana, for its hand-fashioned pastas and rolling olive oil cart. What’s better than dipping fresh-baked focaccia into markedly different olive oils?  I barely went to the beautiful afternoon teas but when I did, the flaky scones made me swoon. La Reserve, the only fee-based eatery, offers multi-course meals with wine pairings. The Dom Pérignon six-course extravaganza was worth the decidedly steep $295 charge per person on my cruise; different vintages were paired with excellent cuisine and glasses were generously refilled. The passionate head sommelier explained each vintage and pairing in depth. Speaking of wine, I adored the bin finishing sheet added to restaurant wine lists; I found really good bottles at substantial discounts.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center is a rather glam and worthwhile destination for its vast array of services, from facials, detox wraps and massages to medi-spa. It offers complimentary fitness classes, like spinning and Pilates. The sauna and steam are open to any guest; no need for a treatment. Same goes for relaxing on heated ceramic loungers. Aquamar Spa Terrace features a thalassotherapy pool and whirlpools, open post-treatment or to spa-dwellers. The big adjacent fitness center offers the typical TechnoGym equipment like stair climbers, weight machines and treadmills. This spa also offers specific shore excursions dubbed Wellness Discovery Tours, like visiting hammams in port.

Activities and entertainment

Riviera offers activities galore – even pickleball. My favorite was a hands-on cooking class with recipes from Red Ginger in the Culinary Center. Our chef instructor expertly demonstrated each dish and then we tried – and succeeded – in duplicating them at our well-equipped stations. In the Artist Loft, a resident artist displays his work and offers workshops. The big library tempts with diversified tomes and beckoning comfy chairs with ottomans. I saw lots of the same faces playing table tennis, paddle tennis, putting, croquet, bocce and shuffleboard. Some passengers attended port enrichment lectures. The pool and hot tubs stayed popular. Pre-dinner, I relished a talented female string quartet playing classical music in the Grand Bar, although the adjacent Martinis lounge was the busiest and buzziest. Post-dinner, I attended a musical show or two starring shipboard singers and dancers in the Riviera Lounge, which were okay, much like those on luxury lines. The casino was sometimes busy when I looked; with many early morning excursions, passengers tend to turn in early, although some head to Horizons for nightcaps and dancing to a live band. Props, too, to Riviera’s inclusiveness; my cruise featured an LGBTQI+ social evening.

How was the experience for families?

Riviera vibes like an adults-only ship, although children aged one-year-old and up are allowed to board. There are no kids clubs or programming and I didn’t see any little ones on my cruise.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My cruise sailed from Venice to Istanbul, with visits to Athens, Mykonos and Croatia’s Split and Rovinj. It’s a fairly common route with competition from other premium and luxury lines. Plentiful shore excursion choices meant choosing was challenging. My standouts were food and wine-driven. In Kusadasi, Turkey, when most visitors toured Ephesus, I joined a small group for a cooking demonstration and sumptuous Turkish lunch prepared by local cooks at a mountain resort hideaway. In Santorini, our guide whisked us to vineyards and wineries. How fascinating to learn how grapevines here thrive on dew alone, and that many island residents make wine with grapes grown in their backyards.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

On all ships, Oceania Cruises offers Go Green Tours, where cruisers engage with residents and businesses on conserving and sustaining surrounding environments. For example, in St. Kitts passengers may learn about hydroponic farming in rainforests, or in Athens, observe injured and ill sea turtles undergoing rehabilitation.

Anything we missed

My food memories astonish me. Months later, I can still taste the illy crema, a frozen blend primarily of espresso and cream, at Baristas. I currently crave Waves Grill’s fragrant vanilla-forward milkshakes, and Wagyu burgers, their juices dripping down my hands. I see the tall chef in a tall toque expertly carving a crackling-skinned whole suckling pig at lunchtime in the Terrace Café. Long story short, the cuisine pretty much blew my mind.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

If you’re passionate about food and wine and exploring the world in style, you’ll love life onboard Riviera.

Oceania Cruises is a high-end cruise line with a reputation for excellent dining and the ability to visit a wider variety of ports because its ships aren’t as large as the typical cruise liner.

Oceania Cruises, part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, launched in 2002. It focuses on travelers who want more privacy and personalized service when they sail. Oceania sits between its two sibling lines — the higher-end Regent Seven Seas and family-friendly Norwegian — when it comes to ship size and prices.

Here’s what you need to know about Oceania.

Oceania cruise prices

Oceania sailings range in price depending on such factors as cabin type, ship, destination and length of trip. Keep in mind that Oceania is an upscale brand that prides itself on gourmet cuisine and onboard service — and its rates tend to reflect that.

For those looking for a weeklong cruise in the Caribbean, a trip departing from Miami and stopping in Mexico, Belize and Honduras starts at $1,399 per person. If you’re interested in Europe, a 10-day trip from Rome to Barcelona starts at $2,470 per person. Both rates are based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom.

Those who want to make like Magellan can book the 180-day around-the-world cruise starting at $48,499. A shorter, but still luxurious, 72-day itinerary in Asia starts at $19,599. Suites will increase the cost of the cruise but add more space for you to relax in your cabin.

The cruise line has announced a new base fare package called “simply MORE,” which comes with a host of inclusions. These include round-trip flights, airport transfers, shore excursions and a beverage package for all guests in the cabin.

What is the best Oceania ship?

Oceania has eight ships in a range of sizes; the smallest accommodates just under 700 passengers, while the largest can hold up to 1,250. The cruise line has a low staff-to-passenger ratio, between 1.5 and 1.7 staff per passenger, which allows for more personalized service. Many of its ships have capacity for 684 passengers, which means they can feel less crowded than larger ships.

The best Oceania cruise ship is its newest one — Vista. Every room has a veranda, plus space for storage, rain showers in the bathrooms and upscale furnishings.

What is the newest Oceania ship?

The newest Oceania ships are the Vista, which set sail in 2023, and the Allura, which is scheduled to sail in 2025. Both of these are on the larger end of its fleet, with a capacity for 1,210 passengers.

They’re also part of a new class of Allura ships, which feature more onboard amenities and features compared with the other six ships in the fleet. Some examples of this on the Vista include four new dining venues, concierge-level staterooms for solo travelers and larger standard staterooms with over 290 square feet of space.

Oceania Cruises loyalty program: Oceania Club

Oceania Club members earn credits on each cruise they take, with more points awarded for longer cruises. For example, a cruise that lasts up to 24 days earns one credit, cruises for 25-34 days receive two credits, and trips longer than 158 days get 15 credits.

Earning status can take a while unless your first cruise is lengthy. If you’re looking for elite status on a cruise line, Oceania isn't especially rewarding for people who cruise occasionally.

Oceania Club elite status tiers

The Oceania Club loyalty program has seven levels:

President’s Circle.

With your first cruise, you automatically become a Blue member after signing up. The more nights you spend on Oceania ships, the higher your status tier and benefits. Here’s how to reach each tier along with some of the best benefits at each level.

To earn: Accrue at least five credits.

Best benefits: $100 shipboard credit, members-only offers and discount on Wi-Fi packages.

To earn: Accrue at least 10 credits.

Best benefits: $250 shipboard credit, complimentary prepaid gratuities and VIP shore excursion check-in.

To earn: Accrue at least 15 credits.

Best benefits: $400 shipboard credit, $300 spa treatment credit and two custom air fee waivers (worth $398).

President’s Circle

To earn: Accrue at least 60 credits.

Best benefits: $1,000 shipboard credit, complimentary prestige beverage package and free laundry service.

How to earn Oceania Club credits

Travelers earn credits based on the length of a sailing. Even a three-week cruise earns just one credit, which means it can take some time to reach the first elite tier — Bronze, which requires five credits. Even though they’re part of the same holding company, you won’t earn Oceania credits when sailing with Norwegian or Regent Seven Seas.

How to redeem points

There are no points to redeem with Oceania Club. The primary purpose of the program is earning credits to reach different elite status tiers. At each level, there are various benefits you receive when on a cruise.

The Top 10 Large-ship Ocean Cruise Lines in 2020

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

When it comes to traveling by sea, there’s a cruise ship out there for everyone. Huge vessels and expedition yachts — and everything in between — have proliferated over the past decade. Yet readers of Travel + Leisure find much to love about the more traditional big-ship cruise, as evidenced by the stellar scores they awarded a number of large-ship lines, including No. 2 Crystal Cruises and No. 4 Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories; large-ship ocean cruise lines have ships that can carry 600 to 2,199 passengers.

Related : The World's Best Awards 2020

To create that everything-for-everyone experience that readers expect of large ships, the winners relied on two factors: a dizzying mix of onboard amenities and a broad range of interesting itineraries. At No. 3 this year, Seabourn excelled in both regards. “The service is extraordinary,” said one reader, who cruised aboard the Seabourn Ovation , the line’s newest ship. “The staff read minds,” concurred another, who added that “the service is above and beyond, and ‘no’ has been removed from the dictionary!” Passengers also complimented Seabourn’s dining menus — created in partnership with chef Thomas Keller — and spacious staterooms.

No. 5 Silversea Cruises jumped three positions from last year’s ranking in this category. (Silversea also ranked on this year’s list of midsize-ship and small-ship lines.) “The crew was very attentive and accommodating, and they bent over backward to make our trip excellent,” said one voter, who sailed on the Silver Spirit, which was extended to accommodate more guests in 2018. “I love that it was all-inclusive and I didn’t need to worry about money aboard,” said another traveler.

The large ships of No. 2 Crystal Cruises also made waves with voters. Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony both got high marks for their guest speakers aboard — “enrichment is top notch,” said one guest — as well as the shore excursions. As one reader summed up, “We absolutely love Crystal Symphony. It's our favorite ship on our favorite cruise line. It's heaven.”

And while Viking may have begun as a river-cruise line, its expansion into ocean cruising has been met with much excitement by readers, who’ve voted the company as their favorite in this category for five straight years. Keep reading to find out why — and to see which other companies made the list of the best large-ship ocean cruise lines.

The Scandinavian-minded line earned Travel + Leisure readers praise for its fascinating shore excursions, caring crew, and exceptional amenities and ship design. “My husband and I prefer Viking over all other cruise lines because of the ease and professionalism we have experienced,” said one traveler, who recently sailed on the Viking Sky . “From luggage handling to dining to excursions, nothing has come close to the care we have received from Viking staff.” Voters also commented on Viking’s onboard experience, which differs in feel from what some other cruise lines offer. “There are no casinos, climbing walls, or ziplines on board, which is just fine with me,” said one Viking Sky guest. “The ports and excursions are what people are interested in, and it’s here that Viking shines.” Viking launched ocean-going ships in 2015 and now sails six vessels, including most recently the Viking Orion and Viking Jupiter . Up next? The Viking Venus , set to debut in 2021. It’s sure to have some fans: “After my first cruise with them in November,” said one reader, “I will probably never use another cruise line again!”

  • I think it's the perfect higher-end option for travelers interested in upscale cruises.
  • I found it to be boring but the staterooms, pool deck, and food and beverage options make it a standout vessel.

Insider Today

I spent a night in Oceania Cruises' new Vista ship and discovered a floating haven for your bougie — but not baller — grandparents.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings operates three brands: its popular eponymous cruise line , Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Oceania Cruises. In terms of pricing and luxuriousness, Oceania seems to fall in between its two siblings as a "culinary and destination-focused" brand with "small luxurious ships," according to its parent company.

After one night in the Oceania Vista , I agree the vessel is just that: small and upscale. Perfect for travelers with some money to spend on a quiet floating vacation.

Oceania's new ship — the first in its Allura class and the eighth in its fleet — began sailing in May 2023.

largest oceania cruise ship

Until then, it had been over 10 years since Oceania debuted a new vessel. The next Allura class vessel will sail in 2025.

While vacations on the Vista are more expensive than ones with cruise lines like Carnival, its itineraries are still cheaper than what’s being offered on new ships from luxury brands like Silversea.

largest oceania cruise ship

MSC Group's Explora Journeys' new luxury Explora I cruise ship starts at $3,000 per person in 2024 for a six-night sailing.

To compare, Vista's least expensive 2024 itinerary will set cruisers back $2,500 for a seven-day roundtrip sailing from Miami to Mexico, Belize, and Honduras.

So for travelers who are interested in upscale cruises but aren't ready to shell out over $3,000 for a vacation, Oceania Cruises’ new Vista could be a great option.

largest oceania cruise ship

While it's no floating five-star resort, the ship is still more posh than most mega cruise ships while being less pricey than the likes of Regent Seven Seas Cruises .

At least that was my takeaway after spending one night on the Oceania Vista in September while it was docked overnight in New York City.

largest oceania cruise ship

Oceania says its 791-foot-long Vista is sailing with a two-crew to three-guest ratio. (The ship can accommodate 1,200 guests and 800 crew across its 15 decks, 11 for guests.)

As a “destination-focused” cruise line, the Vista is scheduled to sail to ports around the world in 2024.

largest oceania cruise ship

This includes hot destinations in Greece, Italy, Spain, and Turkey. For US travelers, there are several itineraries roundtrip from Miami as well.

And as for its “culinary-focused” reputation, the Vista is publicly leaning into it: Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is the godmother of the new ship.

largest oceania cruise ship

She created two dishes that are now being served in the Grand Dining Room and the ship's Italian restaurant, Toscana, according to the cruise brand.

Besides these two floating restaurants, the Vista has nine dining options including three new to the brand.

largest oceania cruise ship

For travelers craving a healthy breakfast — think fresh juices and avocado toasts —  Aquamar Kitchen is the go-to option. But if you'd rather dine in a relaxed yet modern American restaurant, Ember is your best bet.

The latter is where you’ll find crab cakes, porcini mushroom-dusted bone-in ribeye steak, and lobster macaroni and cheese.

largest oceania cruise ship

If you love cruises for the buffet, you'll find that at the Terrace Cafe with options like sushi, steak grilled to order, and a pasta station.

During my night on the ship, the other reporters and I dined at the Grand Dining Room with a menu that included favorites from the company’s executive culinary director, famed chef Jacques Pépin.

largest oceania cruise ship

Here, travelers can indulge in plates like ceviche with hummus foam, halibut, and roasted guinea fowl, according to its sample menu.

The night I was there, the caviar, monkfish, and lobster options were obvious hits at my table. As expected, my meal was great — one of the better ones I've had aboard a ship.

For the fancier folks, the Vista also has daily afternoon tea with classics like scones and little sandwiches.

largest oceania cruise ship

But for travelers who need a more caffeinated afternoon pick-me-up, the ship also has a coffee shop, Baristas.

This isn't like the Starbucks outposts on some Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships. Instead, Baristas has views of the pool deck, an adjacent bakery, and drinks like melange (which Oceania says is an espresso with whipped cream) and Illy crema (a frozen beverage with Illy coffee, cream, and milk).

No matter the cost to sail, it wouldn't be a cruise without some booze.

largest oceania cruise ship

There are eight watering holes, lounges, and entertainment options on the ship.

The new Founders Bar centers bourbons and ryes in its fun and flashy cocktails.

largest oceania cruise ship

When I walked by, my nose was instantly hit with the residual smell of smoked wood used in the preparation of some of its cocktails.

But for those who prefer the classics, the Vista also has its staple martini bar and what Oceania calls "beverage carts" where travelers can design their own bloody mary and bubbly drink.

After dinner, I dropped into the Vista Lounge theater to see “Headliners,” a song-and-dance performance with covers of popular songs.

largest oceania cruise ship

As a massive cruise show cynic , I didn't enjoy a second of this. But judging by the cheers and applause, some of the attendees would probably disagree with me.

Or head to the “LYNC Digital Center” for classes like “smartphone videography” (you can probably guess the ship’s primary demographic). e

largest oceania cruise ship

Or you could take cooking classes in the Culinary Center and art classes in the Artist loft.

But if you'd rather have a quiet afternoon, there's also the Library with books and games.

largest oceania cruise ship

It was quiet and studious inside.

Options like cooking and art classes aren’t common on most cruise ships. But again, most cruise ships aren’t this upscale.

largest oceania cruise ship

While these classes weren't available during my one-night visit, I would've been first in line to book them if I could.

Surprisingly, another hint of the ship’s elevated ambiance was the pool deck.

largest oceania cruise ship

There were no waterslides or colorful designs. Instead, this outdoor retreat was neutral, calm, and modern. It's one of the most luxurious I've ever seen.

Two hot tubs and showers surrounded the swimming hole while leaf-like structures partially shaded the circular above-water daybeds.

largest oceania cruise ship

The deck above this had lounge chairs that faced the pool, making this outdoor space feel enclosed and secluded.

For guests who prefer to move around, the ship also has a gym, putting green, and track.

largest oceania cruise ship

And let's not forget everyone's new favorite: a pickleball court .

You could argue that the majority of these amenities, including the spa, are already available on most modern cruise ships.

largest oceania cruise ship

But in my opinion, it's the staterooms — which start at 290 square-feet — that set the Oceania Vista apart from most ships.

For starters, the ship also has "concierge level" solo veranda staterooms for travelers who prefer to sail alone.

No need to worry about dingy interior cabins: As an upscale ship, all of the staterooms have a balcony.

largest oceania cruise ship

I spent the night in the 290-square-foot veranda stateroom .

At the time, it was the largest cabin I had ever stayed in.

largest oceania cruise ship

And it quickly became one of my favorites, second only to the more expensive Explora I .

The small details made this accommodation a standout.

largest oceania cruise ship

Inside, the Bulgari toiletries, large balcony and bathroom, complimentary beverage station, and subtly elevated design won me over.

And that's coming from a picky cruiser: It's not often I walk away from my cruise ship cabin with no complaints .

Compared to my only other upscale cruise experience on the Explora I, the Oceania Vista felt more like a true cruise ship than a floating luxury hotel.

largest oceania cruise ship

After all, the new ship still had the recognizable classics — a buffet, main pool deck, bars, and dining venues — all with a more upscale twist.

But unlike many new mega ships, there were no tacky and flashy decor pieces or excessive amenities.

largest oceania cruise ship

Being on the Vista was not as mentally draining as traveling on the new amusement park-like ships that have been flooding the market (like its distant cousin, the Norwegian Prima with a flashy go-kart track and a thrilling 10-story slide).

So if you’re a more mature traveler who enjoys relaxing and quiet cruises, this could be a great option for you, especially if it’s in your budget.

largest oceania cruise ship

While this is great for travelers who enjoy a quiet cruising experience, I personally found the ship to be a bit boring.

Sure, my stateroom and dinner were quite luxurious.

largest oceania cruise ship

But for younger cruisers who prefer nonstop fast-paced entertainment and visual stimulation, I wouldn't recommend the Vista.

Instead, if you’re a traveler who enjoys relaxing and quiet cruises, this could be a great option for you, especially if it’s in your budget.

largest oceania cruise ship

It's a great entry point for travelers looking to dip their toes into the upscale cruise market. After all, I still think the ship's strengths lie in its dining options, staterooms, and bar concepts. And starting at $357 per person per day in 2024, vacationing on the Vista is definitely less expensive than its more luxury-oriented counterparts.

MSC Cruises is expanding its presence at Port Canaveral with the addition of a second ship, the MSC Grandiosa starting winter 2025/26. It will be the first time MSC Cruises will operate two ships from the port.

MSC Grandiosa will sail seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean, while MSC Seashore, which is already there will sail short three- and four-night cruises to Ocean Cay and Nassau.

"The Winter 2025-2026 season will mark our largest presence in the U.S. to date, and our expansion at Port Canaveral is a big part of that," said Ruben A. Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises, USA. "Ever since we started sailing from Port Canaveral in 2021, our guests have told us they love how convenient that makes it to experience MSC Cruises' unique international flavor.

On its Eastern Caribbean itineraries, MSC Grandiosa will visit a mix of the following ports: Nassau, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, Puerto Plata, San Juan, and St. Thomas.

On its Western Caribbean itineraries, the ships will visit a mix of: Nassau, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Cayman Islands, Montego Bay, Falmouth, and Belize City.
