Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company began in the 1860s and is the force behind several beer brands, including Michelob, Busch, Budweiser and Bud Light. The company operates 12 breweries throughout the country and conducts complimentary tours at five of those locations. Visitors to the Northern California Budweiser brewery in Fairfield, less than an hour from San Francisco, have their choice of two tours that introduce guests to the brewing process -- a complimentary tour and the more in-depth beermaster tour.

Budweiser History

Budweiser was first brewed in 1876 by Adolphus Busch, the president of Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company, and his friend Carl Conrad. The recipe produced an American lager in the traditional European style, and the company continues to make Budweiser utilizing the original recipe and brewing process. The beer is created through a multi-step process that involves mashing, heating, two fermentation steps and pasteurization.

Complimentary Tour

Standard guest tours at the Fairfield Budweiser brewery are complimentary and run on a seasonal schedule. The tour is handicap accessible, but it does involve a good deal of indoor and outdoor walking. Guides lead visitors through the brewery, highlighting the history of the company as well as different aspects of the brewing process and the equipment required to create the lager. Guests ages 21 and over can sample two of Anheuser-Busch's products in the tasting room at the end of the tour. A gift shop offers branded items and souvenirs.

Beermaster Tour

For visitors who want a more in-depth experience, the beermaster tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process and visits areas not included in the complimentary tour. Guests have the opportunity to taste the product directly from a finishing tank and view the packaging center and lager cellar. The beermaster tour is available to ages 13 and above for an additional fee, and all guests are required to wear closed-toe shoes.

Other Brewery Tours

Anheuser-Busch offers complimentary and beermaster tours at four other brewery locations: St. Louis, Missouri; Fort Collins, Colorado; Jacksonville, Florida; and Merrimack, New Hampshire. The famous Budweiser Clydesdales can be viewed at the St. Louis, Merrimack and Fort Collins locations, and the beermaster tours at those facilities also include visits to the stables and tack room. Beer School operates on a seasonal schedule in St. Louis and Fort Collins, and introduces guests to a variety of beers, suggests food pairings and educates participants on different brewing techniques for each type of Anheuser-Busch beer.

california budweiser factory tour

california budweiser factory tour

Last updated: 01/08/2019

How about including a tour of one of the most famous American breweries in the world in the itinerary? We went for a tour of the Budweiser factory in California and we tell the whole experience in this post. Come with us!

THE BUDWEISER BEER

Budweiser, affectionately called “Bud” is an American lager-style beer brewed by the company  Anheuser-Busch , which is the third largest beer producer in the world. Founded in 1876 by German immigrants, its headquarters are located in the city of St. Louis in the US state of Missouri. Beer is also known as the “King of Beers”.

A little of history…

The story goes that in 1857, Adolphus Busch left Germany for the United States, settling in St. Louis, Missouri, where he founded his own beer supply company. in St. Louis, Busch met and married Lilly Anheuser. Lilly's father, Eberhard Anheuser, owned a small brewery and had been brewing lager beer for some time. In 1864, Busch partnered with his father-in-law to form what would become the Anheuser-Busch Company. In the 1870s Anheuser-Busch became the first American brewery to implement pasteurization, which greatly improved product shelf life and transportability of their beers.

In 1913, Mr. Busch became president of Anheuser-Busch. However, with the beginning of Prohibition in 1920, he had to reformulate his product line to survive, due to the “Prohibition Act”, selling low-alcohol beverages made from brewer's yeast, malt extract, and other raw materials that were authorized for home brewers. When Prohibition ended in 1933, Busch returned to producing conventional Budweiser.

However, some factors caused a drop in sales of the product: first, the consumer's taste had changed in this period, accustomed to the milder flavor of beer with a lower alcohol content; second, the Great Depression of 1929 still had a huge impact on the consumer market. It was not until 1936, with the introduction of beer in aluminum cans, that Budweiser began to recover its sales, which soared after the Second World War (1939-1945). In 2008, the brewery was acquired by giant InBev and various cost-cutting measures were implemented, which, according to some experts, had a negative influence on the beer's taste. Even so, according to one report disclosed by the company, Budweiser is present in 80 markets around the world.

BUDWEISER FAIRFIELD BREWERY FACTORY TOUR, CALIFORNIA

Founded in 1976, the Fairfield facility quickly became Budweiser's “greenest” facility. The brewery uses solar and wind energy through a 2.83 hectare solar panel and two wind turbines, meaning that approximately 30% of the electricity used is acquired through alternative energies. In addition to wind turbines and solar panels, the brewery's energy efficiency and conservation initiative includes a bio-energy recovery system (BERS), recycling and water conservation efforts.

There are several types of tours available, all of which provide an explanation of the history and production process of Budweiser. We chose to take the more traditional tour of the brewery, “The Brewery Tour”, which takes place every hour and there is no need to book in advance. We got there, bought our tickets and the employee put a bracelet on our wrists identifying that we were over 21 and could drink (it is necessary to show an identity document).

While we waited for our appointment, we took the opportunity to visit the waiting room area, which has important information about the history of Budweiser on the walls. There is also a gift shop with several items with the brand's logo: cups, key chains, t-shirts, and many souvenirs.

Budweiser gift shop

At the back of the hall, there is a beautiful tasting room, with a pool table, tables, chairs and a bar where drinks are served.

california budweiser factory tour

Our tour started on time. We were directed to a room with tables and TV sets where we were offered some drinks of our choice while two videos were shown that told a little more about the beer production process. A curiosity is that among the main ingredients of Budweiser is rice, something unusual in the recipe of other beers. At Budweiser's main factory in St. Louis in Missouri, 40 different types of beers are produced, but at Fairfield, only 14 and all are aluminum cans, there is no bottled beer produced at this particular plant.

california budweiser factory tour

After watching the videos, our guide gave us clear glasses to wear during the tour, for safety reasons. He took us to the storage area, which has 3 floors of giant tanks that hold the various types of beer products on site. For the colder ones, it is worth mentioning that this area is refrigerated at 7ºC and it gets a little chilly if you don't have long sleeves.

california budweiser factory tour

Then we went to the factory itself. The guide explained to us about the beer packaging and distribution process. The Fairfield facility serves the West Coast states of the United States and Alaska. Unfortunately, the factory does not have an observation deck so we can get a close look at the cans rolling down the conveyor belt.

At the end of the tour, the guide took us to the tasting room (the same one we mentioned earlier). There you can choose to taste various types of beers available and even win a glass with the company logo.

Hi, good evening, my name is Angel Naranjo, I'm looking to open a bar here in Brazil, in the state of Santa Catalina Pinhalzinho, and I'd like to put the name of the Budweiser beer you sell. How do I chat with someone from you to look for something with that name. Like refrigerators. Tables. Chairs. Cups. Drinks. This is my cell phone [edited] call me on wassapp. Thank you I hope your answer.

hello angel Viajonários is a travel blog. We visited the Budweiser factory as tourists. We have no affiliation with the company. We wish you the best of luck with your bar. 🙂

This Bud’s for you: Brewery a 40-year staple in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD — America turned 200. The $2 bill was issued. And Fairfield became home to an Anheuser-Busch brewery in 1976.

Today, it’s one of Fairfield’s top attractions that employs about 300 people, many of them from Solano County.

“Your beer is being made by your neighbors,” said Tony Sanfillipo, the brewery’s general manager. “Your beer is in good hands.”

Visitors from around the globe stop by for samples, tours or to meet the world-famous Clydesdale horses when they are in town.

Sanfillipo, a 15-year employee with Anheuser-Busch, worked at the plant previously about 10 years ago. He gleaned a lot of history about the local brewery at a 40th anniversary party in October. He saw pictures of the facility under construction.

“It didn’t look like there was much else here,” he said. “Interstate 80 looked like a two-lane highway.”

There is no typical day at the brewery, he said. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The brewery sits on about 170 acres. It is one of 12 Anheuser-Busch breweries in the country, and one of six that offers tours.

Between 200,000 and 300,000 cases of beer are shipped out daily. Those shipments head as far as Alaska and Hawaii. More than a dozen brands are included in those figures.

Anheuser-Busch dates back to 1852 in St. Louis, Missouri. The company survived Prohibition by marketing more than 25 different non-alcohol products such as soft drinks and ice cream.

The Great Depression also restrained growth. With the introduction of the metal can in 1936, sales began to climb. Two years later, Anheuser-Busch hit the 2 million barrel mark.

Sanfillipo credits the company’s success to its employees and products. The Fairfield brewery has employees who have worked there 20, 30 and 40 years.

Jennivive Soriano was 19 when she started working at the brewery. Today, almost 20 years later, the Fairfield High School graduate is supervisor of brewery experiences. One of the most common things she hears from those taking a tour is, “I don’t like beer.”

“We will find you a product and you will walk out of here thinking it’s totally awesome,” she said.

Andy Mack was making his choices on a recent day in the tasting room. He was traveling between Orange and Davis. As he prepared for the tour, he sampled some Spaten Optimator and an amber. He was also impressed that the brewery giant extended a welcome hand to microbreweries.

The Fairfield brewery is also home to a nonprofit, Families Helping Families, which began 31 years ago with an employee passing around the hat to collect money for neighbors in need.

A monthly First Friday concert series, and annual car show, raise money now for the organization, which distributed 300 baskets of food this year. Each basket had enough food to feed a family for two weeks.

The organization also gave $100 gift cards to 100 senior citizens.

Sanfillipo took over general manager duties in 2014, after the facility opened its new tasting room, which features a bar top made of recycled glass. A gift store is next door.

The brewery has expanded its tour offerings over the years to include a brewmaster tour and beer school.

There’s also an emphasis on sustainability. Wind turbines now produce about 30 percent of the electricity the brewery uses.

Date: 10/18/2018 Time: 2:00 PM 75° Sunny Our group's adventure for the day ended at Anheuser Busch for tour and beer tasting. I have to admit I have never acquired a taste for beer. It does not matter the brand. I don't drink beer and I don't like the taste of it. I am not a fan of beer. Yecch! Ugh! So there! Ha! Even though I have this dislike for beer, why am I on this tour and what is up with the 4 star rating? Just because I have a negative opinion of beer, it does not mean giving a bad rating such as a one or two stars. I am being objective of Anheuser Busch. The tour is interesting and, of course, I love their Clydesdale horses and their beer commercials during the holiday season. To see the facility, all of us are required to wear ear plugs and clear plastic goggles as a safety measure. The decibel level in the facility is high and the ear plugs are for our protection. One of the buildings has these humongous steel kegs (72 feet long and I didn't hear the height of these kegs) for storing the beer. The building is four story high. Temperature on the first level is 50° and 36° on the 4th level. There is also a metal container with beechwood chip. We have a choice of keeping it as a souvenir or returning it. Our group is divided in two groups, 25 people in each group. One group goes on the tour of the facility while the other group goes to the tasting room. I am in the second group. Tasting room, here I come. I choose a bottle of mango rita to try. It is a tad too sweet. I only have four small sips because of the sugar level. I leave the rest of that beverage on the table. When the first group returns from the tour, they go to the tasting room. The second group goes on the tour. Our two tour guides are pleasant and articulate in providing the history of Anheuser Busch. Their service is superb and they are informative. The gift shop is nice place to visit, but I did not purchase anything.

Fairfield Budweiser ends factory tours, closes gift shop

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — With the closure of Budweiser’s tour center, a hallmark of Fairfield’s tourism has come to an end.

While the tour center is closed, the factory itself is not. There are no other impacts on their other brewery operations or the workforce.

“Unfortunately, we made the decision to discontinue our tour center operations,” said Samantha Roth, Director of Corporate Communications for Anheuser-Busch in an email response to ABC10. “This will allow us to focus resources on additional community activities and programs. We are always focused on simplifying and streamlining our business, and focusing our resources to invest in growth.”

Roth added that the company will not be conducting interviews regarding the tour closure at this time but noted that they are committed to brewing beer in Fairfield, supporting local jobs and communities in the area.

In a follow-up response to ABC10, Roth confirmed that the tasting room will no longer be available to the public. However, the brewery will still have their annual car show and continue to support "Families Helping Families," an organization run by the local Fairfield brewery employees.

Ultimately, the tour center’s closure was a business decision.

“The reality is that our tour center at the Fairfield brewery had not been financially viable for some time, and so tours have ceased to continue [as of December 22, 2018],” Roth said in an email.

About five years ago, the company had done a large expansion of their gift shop and tasting room. They moved it from the second floor to the first floor and knocked down a number of offices and walls to make the gift shop and tasting room guests have been recently familiar with, according to Anand Patel, CEO/President of the Fairfield Conference & Visitor's Bureau.

He added that the tours typically attracted locals, friends and families, and day trips from out of town visitors. Patel noted that one of his first sales for the factory tour was a 25-person birthday party for a 70-year old woman, who loved Budweiser.

While the loss of those tours is a setback for the tourism bureau, they’re confident that Fairfield tourism will remain strong. He added that they are actually coming off of one their strongest years ever for tourism.

“Despite the setback of losing a major internationally known figure as far as Budweiser [tours] goes, we’ve got some great growth on the wine side that will add to that,” Patel said. “I think that as wine becomes increasingly popular…, our region in proximity to Napa, I think, has gained a lot more notoriety and fame.”

After hearing about the tours ending, the tourism bureau “literally had to stop the presses” as Patel put it; thousands of magazine orders with information on Budweiser tours had just been sent to the printer.

“It wasn’t just one listing," Patel said. "We get changes to our visitor guide all the time, but, being that Budweiser was such a significant part of the community and tourism, they were referenced several dozen times.”

Patel and the bureau were able to make the adjustments in time, and all their materials, including their website, have been updated. Patel noted that the other factories were made aware of the tour closure as well.

“Some of the folks hadn’t even learned of Budweiser’s [gift shop and tour] closure yet,” Patel said.

The other factories and tourism destination would often help direct tourists to other destinations. Since those tours are gone, the bureau didn’t want visitors redirected to a facility that no longer carried the tour.

How Stockton became the official home of the Fantastic Four

You might say Joe Field is an unsung super hero of Stockton. When the comic book nut realized Marvel Comic's Fantastic Four didn't have a "real life" home, Field came up with the idea of making Stockton the super hero team's birthplace.

Exploring Craft Beer and Homebrew in Peru (Country Code 51) and the USA (Country Code 1)

Anheuser-Busch Brewery – Fairfield

anheuser busch tours fairfield ca

The video itself is not that interesting and is sparing on some details -for example, it does not really explain the role of hops in beer- but the brewhouse shown on it is as close as many will get one on this tour.  Probably because of the sheer size of the plant, and its location clear at the other end of it, the Fairfield brewhouse is not included in the basic tour, but is part of the longer “Beer Master” tour.

The explanantion by the guide was a bit more interesting, and I learned a few things from it. For example, that Anheuser-Busch was a pioneer in bottling beer in the US, in pasteurizing beer, and in transporting beer in refrigerated train cars –which they did by loading the front of the car with blocks of ice which cooled the air, while the train’s forward movement circulated it around the cases of beer– which enabled Budweised to become the first beer with nationwide distribution.

The guide did also mention that the name “Budweiser” was just “an invention” made up by Adolphus Busch, and had no meaning but was just meant to “sound German.”  No mention was made –even by me!– of ol’ Adolphus’ inspiration from his trip to Bohemia, and the subsequent name dispute with the Budvar brewery in the Czech town of Budweis.

As the Fairfield brewery was directed a while back to concentrate on canning and kegging, the tour then proceeds through a fairly large empty space in the production area, which once held the bottling line.

It then proceeds to the cool room and the fermentation area, where the much-vaunted beechwood aging process is explained.  You even get to take home a souvenir piece of beechwood that’s been used in the fermentation process!

At tour’s end, one is returned to the visitors’ hall and led to the tap room at the back of the gift shop area, where one can redeem one’s ticket for 6-oz pour of beer.  Naturally, one may purchase other beers –full-sized of course!–, select from a menu of flights, or design one’s own flight, of Anheuser-Busch/Inbev beers.
