Oak Island – Connecting Portugal

Season 9 of The Curse of Oak Island is drawing to a close. This week they started excavating in the last large can of the season.

Part of the team was also off on an excursion to Portugal.

Curse of Oak Island, History Channel, Did they find anything?

They showed some really interesting scans of the musket which may be able to better date and locate where it came from.

The hinge could be from as early as the 1400’s.

oak Island, Money Pit, Mahone Bay

They looked for similar symbols to see if they could find connections to Oak Island. They also looked at types of crosses and were able to find some similarities between Nolan’s Cross on Oak Island and the cross of the Order of Christ.

Curse of Oak Island, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

There is much more investigation of the the substrate of the stone road that needs to be done to show the similarities. The surface of roads are much more similar than what is beneath.

oak island, curse of oak lsland, satellite, money pit

The preview also showed them looking for the continuation of the stone road.

Part of the team is still in Portugal and they show them visiting a structure that has levels similar to the original money pit. Is there a connection?

Is there really a connection between Portugal and Oak Island? I really don’t see a solid connection, but maybe they will find something.

What did they find? How exciting will it be next week?

'The Curse of Oak Island' team criticized for 'unnecessary' Europe trip, accused of padding 'airtime'

MORIMONDDO, ITALY: On the April 9 episode of ' The Curse of Oak Island ', the History Channel team embarked on a tour to Europe to investigate the path the Templar Knights may have traveled when transporting wealth from the Holy Land to Oak Island . As the tour progressed, viewers quickly lost interest in the vacation, referring to it as a means of filling airtime.

Rick Lagina , his nephews, Alex Lagina and Peter Fornetti , and Doug Crowell embarked on a research trip to Morimondo, Italy , some 3500 miles east of Oak Island, to look into the probable roots of the 229-year-old mystery.

Viewers to X, to ridicule the team's attempt to dig further across Europe, as they joke, "I think we've finally found the true purpose of this European trip..." One user chimed in, "Alex and Peter waiting for Rick and Doug to fall asleep so they can sneek out and party."

One viewer questioned, "I'm curious....how many overseas trips are needed to learn about Templar symbols and digs?" A fourth user threw a jab at them saying, "So this is one of those needless road trip episodes?"

One user sighed, "Another site seeing trip to EUROPE ... which will tell us..." Others joked, "My third grade field trip to the Proctor & Gamble factory was a lot more informative than this excursion. At least we got free soap."

One viewer noted, "These episodes where they travel are some of the most boring and unnecessary ones that could be an email." Another fumed, "It's such a thing for the Laginas to admit to doing. They said they asked the researchers to find a place for them to visit in Europe. Essentially they're admitting to asking people to help fill airtime. Shameless behavior."

'The Curse of Oak Island' team finds markings similar to H+O Stone

In the Tuesday episode, researcher Emiliano Sacchetti and archaeoastronomer, Professor Adriano Gaspani planned for the crew to visit Morimondo Abbey, the location of a monastery founded by Cistercian monks in the twelfth century. According to Professor Gaspani's research, three megalithic stone formations discovered on the surface of Oak Island, known as Nolan's Cross , the five pyramid-shaped stone piles on Lot 15, and the stone triangle that once stood on the south shore were constructed based on alignments with stars in the night sky back in the 13th century by members of the Knights Templar , the Christian military order that some believe smuggled priceless religious treasures.

The Order of Cistercians was formed in 1098 and built several abbeys around Europe, notably Morimondo Abbey in the late 12th century. The Cistercians were famed for their advances in the sciences, including construction, engineering, and astronomy, and they documented their findings in painted books known as illuminated manuscripts.

The order was also intimately associated with the Knights Templar, who, according to Professor Gaspani, may have utilized abbeys like Morimondo to not only exchange confidential information, but also smuggle their precious jewels throughout Europe before moving them to North America.

Rick and team members discovered a sign associated with the Knights Templar in a 12th-century Cistercian Abbey in Morimonddo, Italy, which has also been discovered on Oak Island. Discovered on the northern coast of Oak Island in the 1920s, the so-called H+O Stone, which featured a cross encircled by four dots, was part of a bigger rock that had been exploded by searchers who mistook it for the location of buried wealth.

It was likely that the crew discovered an important clue outside of Morimondo Abbey that provides more proof linking the Knights Templar to the Oak Island mystery.

'The Curse of Oak Island' team finds Tree of Life in Europe

The researchers discovered a painted picture of the tree of life inside. Many people feel that the revered religious emblem represents a doorway to God.

Rick, Alex, and Peter visited a 14th-century prison in Domme, France , where members of the Templar order were imprisoned for heresy by King Philip IV in 1307. Some argue that the underlying purpose of the Templar persecution was for the Catholic Church to seize the sacred artifacts they had, which may have included the Ark of the Covenant .

Most of the Templar treasure has never been discovered. However, Nolan's Cross on Oak Island, which Professor Gaspani thinks was built by Templar Knights about 1200 AD, has been interpreted by some as representing the Tree of Life .

'The Curse of Oak Island' team visits European castle built in line with Nolan's Cross

Rick and the crew met with Professor Gaspani, his interpreter, Marzia Sebastiani, and Emiliano in Bianzano Castle. Many religious academics think that Bianzano Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, formerly functioned as the Italian headquarters for the Knights Templar.

Some say it was also one of the locations where the Templars stored their wealth before transporting it throughout Europe and eventually to North America.

One of the main reasons Professor Gaspani opted to show Rick and the crew the location was that, according to his study, the castle was built to line with particular stars in the constellation Cygnus, similar to the design for Nolan's Cross on Oak Island.

Is It Possible To Visit Oak Island From Curse Of Oak Island?

Marty Lagina talking

"The Curse of Oak Island" is now in its 9th season on History after it premiered back in January of 2014. Seven years later, the show still features Michigan brothers Rick and Marty Lagina as they try to uncover a legendary hidden treasure that has been rumored to be buried somewhere in Oak Island , a small landmass off the shores of Nova Scotia in Canada. The Lagina brothers purchased a 50% stake in the company that owns the rights to Oak Island , which is how they are able to operate pretty much alone. Over its nine seasons, Rick and Marty have made new discoveries on air that have brought the search for the treasure closer than ever before, including a possible sunken ship at the bottom of the island's swamp.

This season of the show has held a lot in store for the Lagina brothers ' operation. Not only have they made discoveries of gold, an old Knights Templar map, and new clues that point toward the famed Money Pit, but they've had to face a looming threat of government shutdown. In the most recent episode, "It All Adze Up,"  the Lagina brothers and their crew continue to find more remnants of an old ship, including pieces of cannon that point to the Portuguese.

With all the excitement of this season and everything that has been discovered over the past seven years, many fans are wondering whether it's even possible to go to Oak Island if you aren't a part of the Lagina brothers' crew or in the government. Are tourists able to visit the famous Oak Island?

You can visit Oak Island free of charge

Surprisingly, even though Oak Island is privately owned, it's still open to visitors. Although you can't just show up on a whim and start looking for treasure yourself, they have guided tours. You may, however, show up at any time in-season and visit what's called the "interpretive center" for free — as of the writing, it's out of season as they closed on October 31. If you wanted a more scenic tour, that kind of thing would be pre-scheduled and is definitely guided. Those tours are only available in-season and on weekends. There's a lot of information on the Oak Island website and on Oak Island Tours social media pages regarding the timing and nature of visits, and sometimes, according to the website, cast member Charles Barkhouse even leads some of the weekend tours — when they aren't shooting, of course.

It's unclear how much the guided tours cost, but it's likely to be something given that the tour of the interpretive center is free. If you do end up visiting, it is highly unlikely that there would be any set tours, as "The Curse of Oak Island" likely shoots on the weekdays to avoid any interruption.

You can catch up on this season of "The Curse of Oak Island" on History.com, where all episodes are available.

About the show.

Working with representatives from Dumas Contracting Ltd., the Garden Shaft in the Money Pit area will extend the refurbished 82-foot deep, mid-18th century structure down some twenty feet deeper underground. It is there, where they hope to breach a mysterious tunnel discovered one year ago that runs almost directly beneath the shaft and into an area known as “The Baby Blob” where high trace evidence of gold, silver and other metals was previously detected through cutting edge water testing. Meanwhile, the Lagina’s Fellowship will proceed with a strategic core drilling program across the area in search of other valuable targets that Dumas can potentially help them reach by constructing new underground tunnels.

On Lot 5, located on the western side of the island, working with archaeologist Laird Niven and his associates, the team will continue investigating the entire area, including two mysterious stone features that may date back more than a century prior to the discovery of the Money Pit in 1795. Last year, it was on this newly acquired property that metal detection expert Gary Drayton unearthed not only an ancient Roman coin but also a lead barter token, which may be connected to the 14th century lead cross that was discovered back in 2017 at Smith’s Cove.

Meanwhile, in the swamp, the team reconstitutes their investigations of numerous man-made structures, some of which, have been dated back as much as eight centuries.

As stunning discoveries continue to be unearthed during all of these endeavors on Oak Island, the team’s research will lead to the most monumental journey overseas yet to multiple European and North American destinations that will offer new, shocking evidence that the medieval order of the Knights Templar may very well be connected to the world’s longest running treasure hunt.

The Curse of Oak Island: The team is shocked to date Nolan’s cross back to 1200 AD

Close up of Rick Lagina during an interview on the show

The Curse of Oak Island team has learned that Nolan’s cross dates all the way back to the 13th century as evidence mounts that the Templar knights hid buried treasure on Oak Island.

On this week’s episode, Rick Lagina, accompanied by Alex Lagina, Peter Fornetti, and Doug Crowell, went on a jaunt to Italy to examine a couple of underground cave systems linked to the medieval order of the Templar knights.

However, the team came across their most startling revelation when they visited archaeoastronomer Adriano Gaspani. Archaeoastronomy is a scientific discipline that examines how ancient stone monuments were built to align with stars or other celestial objects. Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid at Giza are just two particularly famous examples of this.

The discipline can actually be used to date a stone monument. Over the centuries, the position of stars moves in the night sky so that a star will rise and set in a different position over time. This can be used to date a monument to a particular era.

With that in mind, Adriano set to work and managed to identify six stars that aligned perfectly with Oak Island’s Nolan’s cross. Nolan’s cross, which lies near the swamp on Oak Island, consists of six large boulders placed in the shape of a cross that covers 100s of feet.

The paved area and Nolan’s cross both date to the 13th century

Adriano then blew the minds of Rick and the others when he calmly dated Nolan’s cross to 1200 AD. The implications of this were not lost on Doug, who pointed out that the paved area of the swamp had been carbon-dated to 1200 AD.

This means that two major features from the swamp area are dated to the 13th century, and this also ties in with Zena Halpern’s theory that Templar knights made multiple journeys to Oak Island for two centuries, beginning with their first trip in 1179 AD.

Earlier this season, expert theorist Brian Pharoah told the guys that he had used sacred geometric numbers to conclude that Nolan’s cross was pointing in the direction of the Money Pit and the garden shaft, which all leads to the stone monument taking on ever greater significance in the island’s mystery.

A diagram of Nolan's cross aligned with stars

Also, in Italy, the guys toured two underground cave complexes in Camerano and Osimo, both dating back over 2,000 years. The warren of caverns became Templar strongholds and then areas of refuge as the knights hid from persecution from the 14th century onward.

Oak Island team found more Templar symbols linked to the island

The Oak Island team came across symbols carved onto the walls that they had seen in other Templar structures in Portugal and in Nova Scotia. Alex and Peter found a circular symbol with a dot in the center that resembled the carving found on the HO stone on Oak Island in the 1920s.

The guys also found a goose claw carving, a symbol they previously encountered on a rock in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, that is said to be the mark of the stonemasons of the Templars.

Rock carvings from Italy

Meanwhile, back on the island, it was a particularly quiet episode last night. The Dumas mining company is slowly getting to the bottom of the garden shaft. They intend to go beyond the originally agreed depth of 82 feet to about 95 feet to investigate the possibility of a tunnel leading into the blob area.

Also, in the swamp area, Billy Gerhardt and some of the guys cleared the muck and water off of the suspected ramp. This stone feature is thought to connect the stone roadway with the paved area, which the guys appeared to confirm.

The Curse of Oak Island airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on History.

There is zero evidence of Templar knights on Oak Island. Zip. Nada. Goose Egg. Squat. Zilch. Nothing. Similar does not mean the same. Grade-schoolers can pick this apart; which is ironic since they share the same level of education as the Templar “experts” this show trots out on a routine basis. They’ve cornered the market on baseless assumptions, these poisoners of the well of knowledge.

The cross found on the beach as well as, other numerous artifacts and their dating, are all indicative and suggestive. And, from them, legitimate inferences can be dawn, inspiration to continue the search and the viewing of it.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.

Northern Lights Glow in the Sky Amid Solar Storm

Powerful solar flare activity made the aurora borealis visible unusually far south..

[Laughing] Holy moly. I know. This — I thought it would just be over on the horizon a little — Behind us, too. Yeah. A little green on the horizon. Nothing like this. This is — This is like, ‘Oh, my god.’ Everywhere.

Video player loading

By Claire Moses

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
