Level Of Support - Inn to Inn
On Adventure Cycling’s inn-to-inn self-contained trips, riders carry their gear, but there’s a lot less of it because participants stay in hotels and eat in restaurants every night, no camping or group cooking gear is needed. Learn More
Physical Difficulty - Level 3
These tours average between 35 and 60 miles per day, and have generally hilly terrain, with some days very hilly or mountainous (the hilly or mountainous days may have shorter mileages). Elevation gain averages between 1500 and 3000 feet per day, with any single day total not exceeding 4000 feet. (Formerly Intermediate/Intermediate+ tours)
Average Mileage: 35-60/day Average Elevation Gain Range: 1500-3000 ft/day, high <4000 ft/day
Ride with us through Vermont’s tranquil Northeast Kingdom with its colorful mountain vistas and stunning views of sprawling Lake Champlain. From fiery-red hardwood canopies to expanses of golden yellow, you can’t beat the breathtaking views of Vermont in the autumn. What better way to go leaf peeping than by bicycle?
We’ll start in the bicycling mecca of Burlington, where, in addition to a bevy of cultural and historic sites at hand, we’ll be treated to amazing views of the Adirondack Mountains looming to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. Moving eastward we’ll enjoy stunning colors and visit many quaint New England towns, including a quick trip into New Hampshire and a stop in Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. Our trip ends back in Burlington, but not before we’ve experienced all of the color and beauty that Vermont has to offer.
Space still available
“This was my first ever tour. The experience was fantastic and the question is not will I do another tour, but what form it will take and for how long.” – Tour Participant
Day 1. Burlington, Vermont, 0 miles
We’ll start our tour in historic Burlington, known to the locals as “B-Town.” With the magnificent backdrop of the Green Mountains to the east, the Adirondack Mountains to the west across the rippling waters of Lake Champlain, and a bevy of cultural and historic sites at hand, we’ll let Burlington treat us right before hitting the open road.
Day 2. Burlington to St. Albans, 42 miles
Today we’ll leave the bicycling mecca of Burlington and watch our urban surroundings quickly give way to rolling farmland. After riding through the calendar-perfect towns of Colchester and Milton, we’ll return to the shores of Lake Champlain and pass through pretty St. Albans Bay before moving away from the shoreline to our home for the evening in St. Albans proper.
Day 3. St. Albans to Jay, 42 miles
We’ll strike out on the beautiful Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail today for the first 20 miles of our journey before heading up and over Jay Peak. Our route wanders through the farms, forests, fields, and wetlands of the Northeast Kingdom with image after image perfect for a postcard. Riding traffic-free for most of the day means plenty of spectacular photo opportunities!
Day 4. Jay to St. Johnsbury, 54miles
Today’s stunning and challenging ride will take us through the foothills of the Green Mountains. The leaves will be beautiful as we head into the heart of the Green Mountains, with bright yellow, lime green, orange, and fiery red hues highlighting the hills around us. We’ll finish today in St. Johnsbury, where, according to the town motto, “rivers and people come together.”
Day 5. St. Johnsbury to Fairlee, 54 miles
Following Adventure Cycling’s Green Mountains Loop today, we’ll dip into New Hampshire briefly before crossing back into Vermont. Tonight we’ll rest at one of Vermont’s oldest continuously operated country inns, situated between the Green and White Mountains near the Connecticut River.
Day 6. Fairlee to Waterbury, 54 miles
Today our wheels will take us through the heart of Vermont. We’ll have the opportunity to explore the state capital of Montpelier, and our ride will take us to the front of the capitol building itself. We’ll finish the day in Waterbury, home of world-famous Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, and settle in just a mile up the road from the ice cream factory. You may find time to swing by and get yourself a sweet treat!
Day 7. Waterbury to Burlington, 26 miles
It’s a short ride back to Burlington through rolling hills and past plenty of silos and colorful mountains. Although the day’s ride will be over quickly, our memories of “leaf-peeping” through Vermont will stay with us long after our final pedal strokes.
Accommodations -
Meals - indoor dining.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. On inn-to-inn trips, breakfast and dinner are provided in eating establishments on the route; lunch is prepared in the morning and you carry it with you on your bike. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.
Physical Difficulty -
Terrain - hilly.
Our Hilly tours have a consistent up and down nature to them. A typical day will have you climbing (and descending) between 1,500 and 2,500 feet. Grades on these tours can vary, but will typically be between 2% and 6%. (38-63 vertical feet/mile).
Single Supplement: - $700.00
Know before you go.
Information for eBike riders : Because every rider, eBike, road condition, and elevation profile is different, it is ultimately up to the participant to judge best whether their battery will last through each tour day. We recommend using pedal assist in its lowest setting or off when not needed to maximize battery range. Bringing a second battery is also recommended. Remember, there is no vehicle support on our inn-to-inn trips, and you would need to carry the extra battery along with all of your other things.

What They're Saying
Unexpected little gem during our week in Stowe
Out of all the exciting things we did during our week in Stowe, Vermont, this proved to be one of the most fun. It’s great because it’s relaxing yet you get some good exercise. The scenery is beautiful and there are some fun little things to check out along the path. We did a six-hour rental which was nice since it allows you to go at your own pace and be spontaneous if you want. _Barry T.
Cannot Say Enough Great Things about this e-bike experience! Jim, the owner is way beyond the average when it coes to customer service and peronability. Truly Superb. The Trails is beatiful and the experience with this rental outfit was absolutley the best day of our trip to VT. Thank you so much! Cant' wait to come back! _Ryan B.
Do Not Miss This!
This is such a fun recreational activity with breathtaking scenery especially in the fall! The staff are super friendly, very accommodating and knowledgeable of the trail and area. Great little towns to stop in along the trail that have nice little cafes and restaurants. Dog's Head on the river is a must stop. Very relaxing! Lastly, I can't say enough about how fun the ebikes are. They just put an infectious smile on your face while you pedal along with the pedal assist feature. We just did the half day ride because we had other things on our itinerary but I would easily schedule the whole day next time. Absolutely worth every penny. _Fred R.
For everyone
My wife and I took our first ebike ride here. The ebikes make it an activity that doesn't wear you out. The path is mostly level with a few inclines at road crossings. Outside, Autumn air, and turning leaves, what could be better? You can stop along your trip in one of the towns and enjoy shopping or a beverage of your choice. Jim took good care of is, explaining how to use the bikes as well as a little bit about the bike trail's many places to stop. _Don C.

The Lowdown
Boasting the lowest population density of any State on the eastern seaboard, Vermont is a hidden gem for cyclists and nature lovers alike. Enjoy the green mountain forests, pristine rivers, and rolling hills as you cycle along Vermont’s quiet gravel roads. This 5-day tour will give you a taste of everything Vermont has to offer; and we aren’t just talking about maple syrup.
What You’ll Love
Simply put, Vermont has the best low traffic roads in the country. Drivers are polite and there is a strong cycling and outdoors culture. As we cross the state and pass through idyllic small towns, you will get a taste of classic New England living. Climb to the summit of Mount Mansfield, taste at the plethora of craft breweries, and soak in the welcoming nature of long-time Vermonters. This tour also boasts some of the best meal options we have to offer. From Mad Taco to wood-fired Folino’s pizza to local cheese and apple cider, Vermont does not disappoint when it comes to food! The Vermont Epic truly has something for everyone and will make you want to come back to the Green Mountain State year after year.
The Night Before
Riders will settle in at the Courtyard Burlington Harbor Marriott in downtown Burlington near Lake Champlain. Enjoy a day in Burlington and hit some of the highlights before setting off on our grand adventure. Meet us at Foam Brewers for a get-to-know-us drink! These will be the people you’ll spend the next 5 days touring with, so the bonding starts now. We will have a beer (or whatever you prefer) and get excited about the epic trip awaiting us. Don’t stay up too late, because we will have an early start in the morning!
Day 1 – 38 miles; 1,821 feet of climbing or 49 miles; 2,645 feet of climbing: Day 1 starts with some gentle riding out of Burlington and into the country. We will utilize the cross Vermont trail and some excellent gravel roads on our way to Waterbury. There we will have lunch at the exceptional Prohibition Pig brewery and restaurant. If you’d like to grab some beers to go or from the shop across the street we are happy to drive them to camp for you. Short option riders will stop here and have a chance to check out the Cabot Farm Store (known for Cabot Cheese!); for the others we continue up to Stowe which is full of great restaurants and breweries. Don’t worry, our route takes us past the store so you can try some cheese as well. We will also be near Smugglers Notch which, aptly named for the history of smuggling leading up to the war of 1812, is a gem for hiking and outdoor activities in the shadow of Mount Mansfield.
Day 2 – 9 miles; 529 feet of climbing or 18 miles; 1,345 feet of climbing: The second day of our trip will be a real treat; we’re going to the top of Mount Mansfield! The group will have the option to hike up to the summit of Mount Mansfield , the tallest mountain in Vermont, or take a gondola up to a nearby peak. On a clear day there is no better view in the whole state. After the hike we’ll have lunch nearby at Cliff House on the mountain! A gondola ride down to our bikes will have one group doing a short ride back to Stowe, and those who want to ride more will continue on to Morrisville for a bit more exploring. The afternoon is free for more hiking around the area or visiting the shops and everything else Stowe has to offer.
Day 3 – 39 miles; 2,032 feet of climbing or 58 miles; 2,567 feet of climbing: Today we get to enjoy the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail! This newly completed trail has an exceptional surface, gentle grades, and an incredible view. After some lovely riding on the trail we break at Butch’s Harvest Store where you may have your first chance to have a maple creemee; the famous dessert which is Vermont’s answer to soft serve ice cream (and in our opinion even better). We end the day at the state capitol of Montpelier. Riders are free to explore the Vermont Historical Society Museum, Capitol Building, and numerous local restaurants in the area. You won’t want to miss our big group dinner at the Three Penny Taproom ; our guides’ choice for the best meal on the trip.
Day 4 – 29 miles; 1,838 feet of climbing or 55 miles; 4,522 feet of climbing: Get ready for the best riding of the trip! The first half of the day is tame as we wind along the Mad River . Lunchtime features the infamous Mad Taco as the group fuels up for our biggest challenge yet. Short day riders will stop in the adorable town of Warren at the country store. After we hit the town of Warren, the road starts to climb as we tackle Lincoln Pass . This gravel mountain will test your legs as we hit gradients as high as 20%! We ride down to Middlebury for our stay at the Courtyard Marriott and some well earned beer at one of the many breweries.
Day 5 – 31 miles; 1,664 feet of climbing or 60 miles; 2,567 feet of climbing: Our final day on tour takes us back to Burlington . You’ll want to soak in all the gravel and gentle terrain as our route winds its way through farmland and forest. Our last lunch will be at Fiddlehead Brewing and Folino’s Pizza . A beer and a pie will set you right for our final dash back to where we started. Short day riders will get a lift back to Burlington where everyone will meet at Leddy Park and ride a few miles out into the lake on the Lake Champlain Causeway. After checking back into the Courtyard Marriott Burlington Harbor and a shower, we’ll have farewell drinks at Citizen Cider in downtown Burlington.

Vermont Self Guided Biking Details
You custom-design your Vermont bicycling itinerary based on the mileage you want to ride each day. Generally, you would need to cover a minimum of 18-20 miles a day to actually ride from door to door between our inns. You can vary the distance each day if you choose. Most of our guests find daily distances in the 25 – 40 mile range to be just about right. At a leisurely pace of about 8 miles per hour, this is a half-day in the saddle, but you’ll expand that with pauses for sightseeing, snacks, rest, and to take in the views.
Our cyclists are pleased that we have obtained a license to furnish a RideWithGPS app to display turn-by-turn routing cues on your phone, spoken aloud if desired.
It is rare that we lose an entire day of riding due to rain. By checking the weather in the morning, you can sometimes plan to wait it out if they promise clearing (local aphorism: “Raining at seven? Done by eleven”), or, on the other hand, ride a little more purposefully if conditions start out fine but are predicted to deteriorate in the afternoon (this would be more common on summer days with afternoon thundershowers in the forecast). Always, if you feel a certain day may be too wet for safety, and you can generally arrange with us at breakfast-time to catch a ride to the next inn with the luggage shuttle later that morning.
A non-electric rental bike is included in the package price. Each bike comes equipped with helmet, water bottle, a small trunk on a rear rack, mirror, and handlebar-mounted phone holder; each pair or group of bikes comes with a mini-pump, spare tube, adjustment kit, and lock. Most often, these are Raleigh, Kona, or Jamis branded equipment, and they will be in exceptionally good mechanical condition for you. While bikes are included, advance sizing with the bike shop is absolutely required, as we have arranged to have rental bikes delivered to your first inn and picked up from your last inn. Electric-assist bikes (“eBikes”) are available at a $25 per bike per day upgrade charge. Bring-your-own-bikes cyclists receive a $25 per biking day discount from the published package pricing.
No sag wagon is provided. We transfer your luggage from inn to inn while you ride, and emergency roadside service (generally a pick up by our luggage staff) is always available, as is a hotline in the very rare event of needing us for a phone call while cycling. But please do not plan to have an emergency: you should set out from your first inn with the expectation that you will pedal yourself to your next inn, choosing your distance accordingly. You will have multiple ways to reach us, and cell coverage is generally available in the cycling area. Our top-notch bike shop is also on-call for emergency roadside repairs for a fee payable to them.
