Valley  are coming to Asia. 

The Toronto-based alt-pop band will be making their way to the region this summer for their The Lost In Translation tour. Presented by  Live Nation Asia,  Valley will be performing in Seoul, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Singapore.

Callao Cave Travel Guide: See the Icon of Cagayan

About Callao Cave

Callao Cave is among the most popular caves in the Philippines and the best known tourist attraction of Cagayan Province. Located in Barangays Magdalo and Quibal in the town of Peñablanca, approximate 30-minute ride from Tuguegarao, Callao Cave is one of more than 300 caves in the vicinity of Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape.

The cave is made up of seven chambers and various formations: the Column, Chapel, Skeleton, Elephant’s Head, Praying Angel, Rocket, Lion’s Head and Dog’s Head Formations. The Chapel, being featured in many tourism ads and postcards, is the main attraction of the cave (and of the whole Cagayan), it is a chamber turned into a cathedral by the locals. The place draws a dramatic picture as the skylight illuminates the hall through its opening.

Unlike the other known caves in the Philippines, Callao Caves is easy to navigate and not technical. You can even navigate it on your own without a guide.

While in the area, one must also try a wooden boat ride in Pinacanauan River and witness the scenic rocky cliffs, bat cave and picturesque river banks with clean greenish water ideal for swimming.

How to Get to Callao Cave

Tuguegarao, the capital of Cagayan Province, is the jump-off point to Callao Cave.

To get to Callao Caves from Tuguegarao City, charter a tricycle for at least P400 round trip. Alternatively, if your are alone and in a budget, you can take the shared tricycle at Peñatoda (Peñablanca Tricycle) Station in Tuguegarao Riverside to Callao Caves Resort (P40/pax, 30 minutes) then take a boat to Callao Caves (P20/pax, 2 minutes).

Another option is to ride a jeep/tricycle in Balzain Highway going to Quibal for P35.00/head that leads to straight to Callao Cave, public ride is a bit rare though and you might need to charter the entire ride.

Manila to Tuguegarao by Land

From Manila, Victory Liner , Florida Liner, Five Star Bus, Dalin Liner, Deltra Bus Transit and Baliwag Transit have daily trips to Tuguegarao. It is around 485 kilometers north of Metro Manila; travel time is about 10 to 12 hours and fare is around P600. You can book your bus from Manila to Tuguegarao or vice versa below:

Tabuk (Kalinga), Ilocos and Abra to Tuguegarao by Land

If you are coming from Tabuk, jeepneys are available in front of St. William Cathedral, fare is P55.00. From Ilocos and Abra, GMW Liner and Florida Liner have trips to Tuguegarao.

Clark to Tuguegarao by Land

For those coming from Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark Field, Pampanga, ride the shuttle or jeepney going to Dau Integrated Bus Terminal, fare is around P50. In Dau Terminal, there are buses going to Tuguegarao. These buses are from Manila and stop at Dau Terminal.

Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have daily flights from Manila to Tuguegarao, travel time is an hour.

What to do in Callao Caves and nearby areas

Here is the list of the activities you can do to maximize your stay in Callao

• Spelunking in Callao Cave and other caves in Peñablanca: Jackpot Cave, Odessa-Tumbali Cave System and San Carlos Cave

· Callao Caves – Located within the Peñablanca Protected Landscape; 24 kilometers from Tuguegarao. The seven-chambered Callao Caves boast of massive limestone and other rock formations, skylights, and a chapel.

· Jackpot Cave – Located at Sitio Tumallo, Barangay Quibal in Peñablanca. At 115 meters, it is the second deepest cave in the Philippines. The cave has a walking-size passage, shafts and drops of varying depths that provide for a lot of rope works.

· Odessa-Tumbali Cave System – Located at Sitio Abbenditan, Barangay Quibal in Peñablanca. At 12.60 kilometers, it is the third longest cave in the Philippines. Known locally as Abbenditan Cave, it is active, flood prone, and provides excellent wet sport caving.

· San Carlos Cave – Probably one of the toughest caves the Philippines could offer. When inside the cave, spelunkers will learn the art of cave crawling. A chamber called “Ice Cream Parlor” contains a cluster of white stalagmites that resemble scooped ice cream. The “John the Baptist” chamber is a very deep underwater sump that one has to take a deep breath and swim to the other side of the chamber. Sharp and rough stones could scratch the skin and tear clothing.

• To ride a banca to Pinacanauan river, go downstairs near the Callao Cave entrance. One banca can accommodate up to fifteen (15) people, so you may opt to join other groups to lessen the expense. A banca ride cost P300.00, back and forth.

Would like to know if it’s advisable to get a Fan or AIRCON room at Tuguegarao? I will be mostly outside travelling Cagayan during the day and just sleep at Tuguegarao at night. It the place that hot at night?

Hi Lakwatsero! Would you know if it’s feasible for us to go straight to Sta. Ana right after spelunking at Callao Cave? We’re Palaui-bound early morning next day so to save time, we’re thinking of doing this route.

Hi misstache, the last trip of van from Tuguegarao to Sta. Ana usually leaves at 4PM or 5PM, depending on the volume of passengers. So there’s a chance that you can still catch it up, otherwise you have to rent a van going there.

Wanderlands Philippines - 12 Days

One of my favourite trips by far! The service, the friendly staff, the helpful tour guide, we loved Dian she was spectacular with every question I had and went out of her way to help anyway she could. The organisation of the trip was fantastic, every memory I have from the Philippines is a happy one, best experience I’ve had on a tour, whale sharks, sardines, turtles, so many fish. Highlight was each boat day and island hopping to new snorkel spots. Highly recommend

A Week In Palawan, Philippines

We were very happy with the itinerary and that we had our contact Marice at hand to provide backup incase of any problems. Local tour operators did an excellent job and Marice was in contact daily to provide updates on pickup and tour times. Accomodation was very good especially the hotel in Coron which exceeded our expectations. Both island hopping tours were amazing as were the lunches provided. Would definitely recommend the week in Palawan tour.

10 Days Philippine Tour

Here is a review for the 10 day Philippines island hopping tour, which I just did (November 2023). CTPH TOURS organised the itinerary, transportation, accommodation and some activities. As other reviews point out, this is a self-led tour. The tour operator will send you a detailed itinerary at the beginning. They will also text reminders for the next day as the tour proceeds. All communication with the operator is by Whatsapp. This includes details of any pickups, flights, accommodation, etc. I was very happy with the arrangements. I visited Manila, Boracay, Cebu, Puerto Princesa and El Nido. The flight connections, transport, pickups were all well organised an there were no issues. I was happy with the accommodation. As expected, hotels were mostly 3-star hotels or equivalent. On reflection, I would have considered adding a few extra days in El Nido at the end to do more of the island hopping tours available at the location, and an extra day in Boracay. Overall I can recommend the experience. It was a convenient and easy way to experience a number of beautiful tours and locations in a short period of time. The price paid also seemed very fair.

Ifugao Villages Trek

What an amazing experience! Would definitely do it again! Will be bringing my friends back to do this short adventure in the near future. My guide Jody was one of the best guides ive ever had whist travelling around the world. His English and humour was great, especially since I was a solo traveller with him. The guest houses were better than I was expecting considering they're in small villages, though still very basic, and had the opportunity to meet other travellers along the way! The scenery and landscapes were beautiful around every corner. Uncharted Philippines organised my trip with short notice since I only booked a few days out but everything was looked after, the information they provided was detailed and perfect.

10 Days Do The Philippines Adventure Tour - Palawan Islands

Just finished the 10 days Philippines tour carried out by Do You Travel. At the beginning, when we figured out that most participants in our group of travelers are single and/or much younger than us, my wife (62) and I (68) thought we had comitted a mistake selecting this trip. The itinerary, the organisation and, above all, very positive group dynamics proved us wrong! We think the biggest merit for this goes to our tour guide Jovain Orlina! We were observing this young man handling complex organisational issues and even more complex (inter)personal challenges with remarkable ease and with passion at the same time. He had a nice word for everyone, open smile in every situation and he managed to reach full identification with the group as a whole. Jovain became part of us. He resolved all problems with skill and dedication. He made us feel relaxed and confident, he opened our hearts and, together with other members of the group, created relaxed mood throughout the tour. Some distracting events like, for example, overall disatisfaction of one group member with the tour, Jovain dealt with patience, in wise and thoughtful manner. However there is much room for significant improvement of one important aspects of the tour. Accomodation could and should be better! The food was for the most part ok, but some selected hotels were not even able to serve a decent breakfast. Rooms were small and in some cases not very clean. Overall, great tour, great group and excellent guide made us enjoy this trip a lot. The best part of the tour was a 3-day cruising expedition from El Nido to Coron on board of Tropical Paradise 7 boat. Excellent cook, skillfull, discrete and attentive crew made us feel thrilled and safe. This was a memorable experience, indeed. Thank you Jovain, thank you Do You Travel. ????

Sagada & Banaue Rice Terraces 4-Day Tour

This is a fantastic tour that is a must-do on your trip to the Philippines! It's a very unique and authentic experience, which is well-run by talented staff members. The Ifugao Rice Terraces are simply fantastic, and Sagada is definitely a paradise. Would definitely go on this experience with Abraham again, thank you!

Philippines Palawan Island Getaway

Ian, our tour guide, was knowledgeable and made sure everything was running on time. We had some disruption to our water activities due to high waves in Palawan, but Ian and Michael pivoted the activities so they were still fun and engaging. I booked the tour to just relax and let someone else do the planning for me and it worked wonderfully. Would book again with Intrepid.

Tour was outstanding. So well organised, an amazing way to see some of the beautiful sights the Philippines has to offer in such a short amount of time.
