Work & Travel Canada, The Ultimate Guide

Combining work and travel in Canada is an excellent way to experience this big country. This Work and Travel Guide will show you how to do it.

Working in the Hospitality Industry

Hospitality Industry

Working on Organic Farms

I know from experience that work and travel across Canada are the best and cheapest adventures ever!

You work for a while and then move on to new places. This teaches you to be flexible and adapt to the Canadian way of life. Working in Canada allows you to be part of the local crowd and to travel on a  budget.

You don’t need to be rich to spend a year or two in Canada if you fund your trip with short-term jobs.

iVisa.com

Work and Travel in Canada but you’re not sure where to start?

Coming to Canada with a   Working Holiday Visa  gives you opportunities and options on how to spend your time. To make it a great experience, know what to expect and where to find help if you need it.

Arriving in Canada with a  Work Visa Canada  is one thing, but you also want to be informed about the job situation and how to find work.

To find work in Canada is not easy,  therefore, it’s good to come prepared!

You will need a resume and references to apply for a job. Work experience is required for many jobs. Finding work takes time; expect to be busy job hunting and going to interviews.

Canada has plenty of job opportunities, especially in big cities

But I don’t want you to get stuck in Toronto or Vancouver for too long during your work and travel Canada trip. Remember what you came to Canada for. Hopefully, it was to see Canada’s backcountry and experience Canada’s rugged wilderness .

Travellers getting stranded in a big city happens much too often. They get casual work at Starbucks, in an office or shopping mall during the day, and at night they spend their money in a backpacker bar or pub. A couple of months down the road they have not more cash than what they came with, and they haven’t seen anything of Canada yet.

City life is not cheap , so beware of getting stuck there! Spend a couple of weeks and then move on. Canada has beautiful cities, but just don’t get stuck there. That’s not what work and travel in Canada is all about!

You might not be aware of the opportunities that exist outside the cities . Big cities don’t differ much from country to country. They make it easy for us to adapt and feel safe.

If you venture out of the main cities and visit small towns you will be surprised how many restaurants, motels, and stores, have Help Wanted signs in the windows.

When you leave the city you come to realize how different Canada is. Out in small towns and rural communities is where your real work and travel Canada adventure begins. Leave the cities behind, go and see CANADA, work AND travel Canada! Work will be as much of an experience as travel will be.

Do something different from what you do at home! Travel and see the country, meet the country folks, work, and have fun doing it, it’s worth it.

What Kind Of Jobs Are Available

There are plenty of job opportunities for travellers in Canada but sometimes they are not easy to find. Mastering the English language helps. If your English language skills need improvement, I suggest combining your work and travel with a few weeks of language studies.

See what is right for you

  • Hospitality industry : A good place to find work away from the beaten path.
  • Jobs on organic farms : If you like gardening and fruit picking you find many volunteer jobs on farms.
  • Ranch jobs in Canada on cattle ranches or Guest Ranches: fulfill your dream and be a cowboy or cowgirl for a while.
  • Ranch Stay:  Combine a Ranch Stay with an Internship to learn about ranch life.

How Does “Buy Now, Pay Later” Work in Canada?

travel and work in canada and pay later

“Buy now, pay later” is taking Canada — and the world — by storm. Often offered by online retailers at the time of check out, this short-term financing option allows you to break up the cost of a purchase into several smaller payments.

If money is tight, using buy now, pay later may seem like a no-brainer, but it can also be a slippery slope. Here’s what you need to know about how buy now, pay later works in Canada so you can decide if it’s right for you.

» MORE: How inflation affects prices

What is buy now, pay later?

Buy now, pay later, or BNPL, allows you to divvy up an online purchase into multiple payments, often at 0% interest and without fees. Generally, the first payment is due at the time of sale and the rest is split up over a pre-set number of payments, the most common being four total payments over six weeks (though payment plans and fee structures vary by program).

For example, if you want to make a $300 purchase, you would pay $75 when you checkout, then make three additional payments of $75 every two weeks until the remaining $225 is paid.

Buy now, pay later is a fast-growing global e-commerce payment method. In fact BNPL payments are expected to grow at 55% per year in Canada, reaching a total of over $5 billion CAD by the end of 2021, according to a report by ResearchandMarkets.com.

And why not? In the right situations, buy now, pay later can be a great tool to manage cash flow and make it easier to pay for larger purchases. But there’s more to weigh before joining the buy now, pay later trend.

Buy now, pay later companies in Canada

Here are the most common buy now, pay later companies in Canada (in no particular order):

Klarna is a shopping app for your mobile device that lets you browse online merchants, create wish lists and get price drop alerts. Purchases you make via the app are spread out over four interest-free payments.

Affirm is available at checkout with merchants who use the platform. You have a choice of payment schedules and you manage payments through your online account.

PayBright (owned by Affirm) gives you two payment options: four interest-free, bi-weekly payments (for smaller purchases), or monthly payments spanning six to 60 months (some of which include interest charges). Check the website for a list of merchants offering PayBright.

Choose ZIP at checkout with select merchants and your purchase will be divided into four interest-free payments over six weeks. ZIP is currently developing apps and an online shopping platform.

Select Afterpay at checkout at participating merchants and you’ll have the ability to make four interest-free payments over six weeks.

Shop through the Sezzle app and split your purchase into four interest-free payments over six weeks.

Should you use buy now, pay later?

Here are some pros and cons to consider before saying “yes” to buy now, pay later.

  • Good credit scores optional. Unlike a bank or credit card provider, buy now pay later companies usually perform a soft credit inquiry rather than a hard credit check — and some may not perform a credit check at all. This makes buy now, pay later a preferable option if you don’t have a particularly strong credit history, or want to avoid the temporary negative effect that hard inquiries can have on your credit score .
  • Extra time to pay. If you have a sudden, large and unexpected purchase and don’t have the cash to pay in full, BNPL provides a way to pay in installments without extra charges.

» MORE: How do credit inquiries work?

  • It’s still debt. It’s easy to spend more than you can actually afford, because payments are spread out, but if you don’t have a solid handle on your cash flow situation, BNPL commitments could financially overextend you. Failure to pay back the loan in a timely fashion could lead to extra fees and even debt collection.
  • Penalties for missed payments. If you don’t make your payments on time, some buy now, pay later companies charge high fees or may forbid you from using the service in the future.
  • Returns are complicated. If you return an item purchased with buy now, pay later, and the provider charges interest, you may still be on the hook for those charges.

» MORE: How to handle debt

Alternatives to buy now, pay later

If you’re not sure that buy now, pay later is right for you, but don’t have the cash to cover an upcoming purchase, consider these other financing options.

Credit card installment plans

Credit card installment plans are different than buy now, pay later options, though there are some similarities in how they work. Some credit cards offer plans with set fees to pay back single purchases or entire balances over time. These fees are typically lower than standard credit card interest rates. Costs vary; plans may involve initial setup costs, monthly processing fees and percentage-based charges.

» MORE: Discover the best credit cards in Canada

Low-interest credit cards

A low-interest credit card (or one with an initial 0% interest offer) may give you the flexibility to pay off your purchases slowly without incurring interest charges. If the low interest rate is part of a promotion, make sure you’re aware of what the standard interest rate will be, and aim to pay off the balance before it kicks in.

Personal loans

With a personal loan, you can borrow a lump sum and make payments over a set period of time, often longer than what buy now, pay later allows. But personal loans require a hard credit check, may involve fees and you’ll pay interest at a fixed or variable rate. Personal loans may be most useful if the purchase is so large that splitting it into just a couple of installments would lead to unmanageably large payments.

Line of credit

A line of credit, secured or unsecured, provides you with a certain amount of credit that you can borrow against at your leisure, typically at a lower interest rate than most credit cards and personal loans.

Working holiday visa Canada update The IEC Canada visa pools for 2024 visa applications are now open. The earlier you enter the pools, the more draws your name will be exposed to – increasing your chances of getting a visa. So get your skates on!

About the visa

Who and for how long

Eligibility to work in Canada To work in Canada, you must have a work permit from International Experience Canada (the IEC). The IEC visa allows you to work for up to 24 months in any industry, other than the sex industry. You’re only allowed one visa per lifetime, so it’s designed to grab life by the snowballs and make it count.

There are only a limited number of IEC Canada visas each year, and so applications work via a pool system. (Not the fun pina colada kind, the kind where if your name is drawn out, you’ll be sent an ‘Invitation to Apply’ for your work permit).

Fast forward some more forms and a biometrics appointment, and you'll receive your ‘Port of Entry’ letter to work in Canada. You then have 12 months to enter the country.

The IEC visa pool opens in Dec/Jan each year, and usually stays open until Sep/Oct. Applying early ensures your profile is exposed to the maximum number of name draws.

  • Australian passport holders must have their ‘Invitation to Apply’ letter before their 36th birthday
  • Have proof of CAD $2,500 in support funds
  • No criminal convictions from the last five years
  • Most applicants are required to have a police background check

If you’ve already have had an IEC Canada visa, talk to us about our returner visas. These include the RO letter (Recognised Organisation) and Young Professionals visa.

Confused? Scroll the page to watch Jessie explain the visa process.

Make it work

Where and what you can do

Your visa allows you to do casual or career work. Typical backpacker and gap year jobs include working in tourism, hospitality, sales, labouring, childcare, retail and seasonal work in ski and summer resorts.

Seasonal jobs are the most popular options for travellers when they first arrive – working as a housekeeper, server, barista, chef, lift attendant, rental technician, driver or ski instructor. The minimum wage differs per state or province, with Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia all around the CAD $15 mark. Most of our pre-arranged ski and summer job employers pay between $16-24 an hour, plus tips where applicable.

You can also work in industries related to your career, education or trade – such as nursing, beauty, marketing, finance, recruitment and everything between. Here your earning potential will be higher, especially with a two-year visa to build up your experience.

Departure dates

Start Toronto or Vancouver

SWAP (our in-country partners) run your in-person arrival orientation every Wednesday in Vancouver and Toronto, but you can arrive at any time and we can book your 5 nights' hostel accommodation around your flights. Virtual arrival orientations for Banff and Calgary are every Thursday.

SWAP run monthly events such as hockey games, baseball games, outdoor movie nights and walking tours - which usually run on the third and fourth weeks of the month (although not guaranteed as it relies on game timetables etc). If your arrival doesn't coincide with an event but you're still in Toronto or Vancouver, you're welcome to head along!

As well as being a geeky bunch of travel nerds and visa whisperers, we're also mental health awareness trained. Which means we know how to connect like humans – not customer service bots.

The IEC doesn't allow us to apply for your Canada work visa on your behalf, but we're with you the whole way – with the correct forms, one-on-one calls, visa webinars and Canada Clinics to ensure your application is submitted correctly.

Your visa fee (currently CAD $272) is paid directly to the Canadian government, and you must also attend a biometrics appointment at a designated biometrics centre to have your photo and fingerprints taken.

The whole visa process from entering the IEC visa pool to receiving your ‘Port of Entry’ letter can take between 2-3 months. We suggest booking as soon as the pool opens for the best chance of securing a visa.

Unlimited pre-vetted working holiday jobs

You can interview with our summer or winter employers before you go, plus access unlimited working holiday jobs on the road.

Our Dream Jobs team scour the planet finding seasonal employers who are looking to take on working holidaymakers. They’re pre-vetted to make sure everything is legit, and once you get your ‘Invitation to Apply’, you can start searching and applying for positions on our JENZA Job Hub.

If you want to sort a job before you go, we work with some of the top resorts in Canada, including in Banff and Whistler, to help you secure a 4-6 month ski season or summer job. Depending on the resort, you’ll need to commit to the full job season, whether its during winter (Nov-Mar) or summer (May-Sep). Although subject to availability, many of our seasonal employers include subsidised staff housing (around CAD $400-600 per month) and great perks such as discounted lift passes, gear hire, and ski or snowboard lessons.

If you’d rather wait until you land, a job workshop is included in your arrival orientation. You’ll also have access to our JENZA Job Hub for your whole visa.

Stories from the Slopes

What's it like to work in Canada?

Fresh off the mountain, here are some of our winter '23/'24 working holidaymakers on what it's like to work a season in Canada. We'll let the video do the talking on this one. Standing by for your call...

Canada visas explained

The IEC Canada visa process can be a bewildering one. A pool without togs is confusing for a start. Especially for Jessie (an Aussie) and one of our JENZA Support Squad. The IEC pools open for visa applications each year in Dec/Jan and usually stay open until Sep/Oct. The earlier you enter the pools to apply for a working holiday visa, the more draws your name will be exposed to – increasing your chances of getting a Canada work visa from that year's allocation. Confused? Here's Jessie to explain how it works.

Canada jobs explained

Your Canada job visa allows you to do pretty much any job in Canada. However, doing a ski or summer season resort job when you arrive is a great way to find your feet, meet other travellers, and live on the mountain. Plus, many seasonal jobs include subsidised staff accommodation - which is a total win when you've just moved over. You also don’t need to be able to ski or board to work a season. In fact, snow angels can be just as impressive as switch backside 180s. Plus, après ski is universal, right?

Got a question? We've got answers.

When should I apply for Work Canada?

You can book onto the Work Canada program year-round. However, working holiday Canada visas operate on a visa pool system – where the quota of working holiday visas (otherwise known as the IEC visa) are released each year. The number of visas available changes for each country - with some countries, including Australia, not having a visa quota. You can check the current quota for your country here .

The visa pools usually open in Dec/Jan, and close around Oct, although Canadian immigration make the decision on when to open and close the pools, so exact dates can change from year to year. Due to the competition for Canada visas and Canada jobs, we recommend booking Work Canada as soon as the IEC pools open

Who can apply for Work Canada?

I’ve been on working holiday Canada visa before, can I go again?

For British passport holders, you can work in Canada under the IEC working holiday scheme twice:

  • A first duration of 24 months under any category
  • A second duration of 12 months under any category

If you used your IEC visa before 2015 for a period of up to 12 months, you are eligible for a second visa of up to 24 months in any category. Those who already participated in IEC twice are no longer eligible to apply. Check out this Canada blog for the new rules for British passport holders. Confused? Call us and we’ll talk you through it.

For Australia and New Zealand passport holders, check out JENZA Work Canada Returner for information on applying for an RO Letter (Recognised Organisation) to return to Canada for a second time.

Do many people travel on their own?

How much does it cost?

What’s included with Work Canada?

  • Step-by-step guidance entering the visa pool and applying for your Canada visa
  • A pre-arranged 4-6 month summer or winter seasonal job in Canada
  • 5 nights’ arrival orientation in Toronto, Vancouver or Banff
  • SIN (Social Insurance Number), Canada bank account and SIM set-up
  • 12 months’ access to vetted working holiday jobs on the JENZA Job Hub
  • Weekly pre-departure group calls to answer all your questions

Where will I live?

How will you help me find work?

Do I need to have a pre-arranged job?

What kind of work do people do?

How To Travel To Canada And Pay Later (2023)

How To Travel To Canada And Pay Later

Who says you have to cancel your plan of traveling to Canada because you are low on budget or cashless? To every problem, there’s always a solution to it. So is traveling to Canada and having to pay later. How worry-free your solution is depends on the level of issue that needs to be resolved.

The reason for Mr. A traveling is different from Miss B’s reason for traveling. Everyone travels for reasons of all sorts like schooling, vacation, for visit, exclusive medical treatments, professional reasons, and so on.

Canada Visa

tarvel to canada and pay later

Canada is said to be a country in the northern part of North America. It is a member of the organization for economic co-operation and development and the group of eight not disputing the fact that it is one of the world’s top ten trending nations with a highly globalized economy . For that reason, it has been the first choice of immigration to many.

Just like in any other countries, there are various kinds of visas with various modes of application and processing and also varies with cost as well.

Types Of Canada Visa And Their Fees

Temporary Visas

Super Visas for Parents and Grandparents

Visitor Visa

Study permit, work permit.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

Business Class Immigration

Canadian Experience Class Visa

Federal Skilled Worker Visa

travel to canada and pay later

Temporary Residence Visas

The temporary resident visa, also known as the visitors’ visa, is an official document issued by a Canadian Visa office that is placed in your passport to serve as evidence of you meeting up with the requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident. The temporary resident visa is usually issued for 6 months but there are circumstances whereby people end up over staying their welcome. Extensions are not allowed but if the extension is to happen, it has to be processed for 30 days before it expires.

Below is a detailed explanation of the various types of temporary visas

Student Visas

There are so many goodies attached to schooling in Canada apart from the fact that you get to experience life outside your country. You are allowed to go along with your family as well as a spouse alongside. Application of work permit can also be permitted after the completion of your education. It’s an amazing choice for international students as they are given the freedom to work while they study.

R equirements needed for an application

A completely filled-in student permit application form

The original letter of acceptance from the picked institution

Two (2) recent passport-size photographs and data

A valid passport or travel document

Evidence of funds

Super Visas For Parents And Guardians

It has been stated above that one of the benefits of student visa is that it allows you to go along with family but the super visa for parents and grandparents is the best choice for the family to move to Canada. Its maximum validity is a total of 10 years.

Requirements needed for an application

A letter of invitation from your relative that is a Canadian

A proof that your relative meets the minimum necessary income

Proof of payment for medical insurance from a Canadian

A document that confirms you’ve had the immigration medical exam

This visa is issued considering one’s nationality because it is attached to your passport, this is best for short visits such as a vacation. The time for processing this depends on the country

Most visitors usually stay for up to 6 months in Canada and you can calculate this preferably by the date of the first day you got to pass the border into Canada. When your visitor visa expires, you need to leave Canada and apply for a new visitor visa, not a visitor record but if you want to extend your visit like in most cases, you’d need to apply online to get a visitor record.

Completed Visitor Visa and Family Information forms

An original and copy of your National passport

Evidence of employment

A bank statement that displays proof of transactions

The study permit is a document issued that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. It takes a maximum of 15-25 days or sometimes even longer to process the application of a study permit. It is advisable to apply for the study permit before going down to Canada.

Valid Passport

Proof of acceptance by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Passport size photographs

Immigration Medical Examination (IME)

Statement of purpose

A valid credit card

English language Proficiency exam score (not mandatory)

Just like it is important for a student to apply for a study permit in Canada so it is for intending workers to apply for a temporary work permit. It is issued for a period of time as it ranges from few days to a few years. Nevertheless, it is important to know that a work permit granted for a particular job is tied to that job.

A valid passport/travel document

Evidence that you meet up with the requirement for your job

Proof of every relationship you claim.

Permanent Resident Card

A person in Canada who lives there temporarily like a student, or basically a visitor is not a permanent resident. The permanent resident card is used as evidence of your residency status and they are entitled to certain benefits like health care insurance, freedom to live, study and work anywhere in Canada. It takes about 45 days to process PR cards for new permanent residents.

How do I get sponsored to travel to Canada?

Getting funds is harder than anyone can imagine it to be. Especially, for a person that has his idea box blank on how to go about it. Considering asking a person?

This might not be easy to do because you have to be in the head of the sponsor, to think like so as to help with convincing the person

How To Get Good Sponsorship to Canada

Identification of the problem is an important aspect because it helps with the analysis of every possible way to get the issue resolved. The layout of plans must be included because orderliness is the key.

Ask yourself questions like:

How important is this vacation?

How fast can the plans be executed?

How efficient is my strategy of getting sponsors?

Why should the sponsor help me?

These are questions that need to be scrutinized well because it is preferable not to sweat over what has just 50% assurance of being a success when you can totally work with an 80% – 90% probability.

Be credible, be authentic, be specific, be straightforward and also be creative with your thinking. Give a convincing reason for you to be able to get help.

Suggestion Box

If you’re stranded because of financial crisis, that isn’t that bad, you can consider all sorts of loans that will be discussed in this article, if you desperately need to Canada because of a health emergency, while thinking about loans you can also try Charity.

The country can’t possibly be filled with just bad eggs, there’s probably someone out there that is more than willing to help.

Start With What You Have

Bank savings, something from the piggy bank (funny but you need all the help you can get), pawning of some valuables that you can let go of, something to help kick off with a little cash is worth considering. Help to come from somewhere is not enough reason to be penniless. Start your planning based on what the little you have can cover.

Search From Within

Now the rich friends and rich relatives can really come in handy this time. Before going far in search of sponsorships from different sources, we can as well consider the Bill Gate of the family or possibly the Alice Walton amongst your friends.

Little cash can also be added to the one on ground from them. You may also by chance be familiar with some fund raisers or make researches about the once that are easy to access because of some exclusive fund raisers are filled with too many protocols due to some considerable reasons.

Don’t Keep your hopes up

There is nothing like achieving your dream with your dignity still intact. Live life in a very strategic

manner by always planning ahead. You can’t raise the bars of your hope by expecting so much from people so as for you to not be surprised with dream-break.

If you are a student aspiring to travel to Canada to further your studies, it’s either you look up to your parents/guardians/relatives for help, pursue a scholarship program online as there are quite a few to choose from, you can as well get a temporary Job, if you’re up for it.

If it’s for a vacation, there definitely must be plans on how to fund it. Get a job, save up or ask from a reliable source.

Track Your Success

Don’t imagine it all. Ensure to document ever possible step you take, you will take or you must have taken. Aim high but start low.

16 Airlines That Let You Book Flights Now and Pay Later

Planning a trip but don't want to pay for it all at once? These sites offer book-now, pay-later flights.

Orbon Alija/Getty Images

If you think a vacation is out of your reach, think again. Some airlines and online travel agencies have services that allow you to book a trip now and pay for it over time.

Affirm, PayPal, Uplift, and Klarna are among the book-now, pay-later services travel companies and airlines offer. Here, we break down the basics of these and airlines' own "BNPL" options so you can secure flights when the prices are lowest, even if you don't want to pay for them in full upfront.

Airlines Offering Book-now, Pay-later Flights

AeroMexico connects major U.S. cities to Latin American destinations like Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. The airline partners with Uplift to provide a monthly payment option. When you go to book a flight, you'll see an option to pay in monthly installments. Click through and you'll be asked for any personal information Uplift needs to process the loan.

You can also pay in installments through Klarna. Download the Klarna extension for Chrome or the app and you should see a pink "K" icon that will show you financing options. AeroMexico takes PayPal, which means you can use PayPal Credit to split up payments if you're approved.

Pay monthly for Air Canada flights and Air Canada Vacations packages with Uplift or PayPal Credit.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines partners with Uplift and Klarna to offer financing for flights.

Allegiant also uses Uplift and Klarna to provide payment plans. Select the Allegiant Pay option at checkout to choose financing through Uplift.

American Airlines

American Airlines offers several ways to buy now and pay later, including Klarna; PayPal Credit; Citi Flex Pay for select Citi cardholders; and Affirm, which has biweekly, monthly, and interest-free options but doesn't cover the cost of any flight extras, like luggage. American Airlines Vacations also gives you the option to pay monthly with Uplift.

Azul Airlines is a low-cost Brazilian airline that accepts payments through Uplift and PayPal.

Delta Air Lines

Delta offers PayPal Credit as a payment option, and you can pay using Affirm if you book your trip through Delta Vacations , a service for SkyMiles members that bundles flights, hotels, transportation, and activities.

One of the United Arab Emirates' two flag carriers, this airline partners with financing institutions Uplift and Klarna. You can also pay with PayPal Credit.

Frontier Airlines

Budget carrier Frontier Airlines lets you pay monthly installments through Uplift on purchases of $49 or more. If eligible, you will see the option at checkout. Frontier is also a Klarna retail partner.

KLM offers customers the option of holding a fare for 72 hours for a non-refundable fee. This is great if you find a fare that you want to book but need a few days to think about it. In addition, the airline takes PayPal Credit. This service is shown on the payment page as a "Bill Me Later" option, but directs you to your PayPal wallet.

Lufthansa has a list of payment methods on its website . Some monthly payment options are available specifically for residents of Brazil and Colombia. U.S. residents may pay monthly through PayPal Credit.

Porter Airlines

Porter , a Canadian airline, allows customers to use Uplift and PayPal to purchase flights across the U.S. and Canada.

Qatar Airways

Unless you're flying from Brazil, Brunei, or Kazakhstan, you can hold any Qatar Airways booking for up to 72 hours. How long prospective travelers can hold their Qatar flights depends on where they intend to fly to and from. The "Hold My Booking" option, available on the payment page, requires a non-refundable fee that doesn't go toward the price of your ticket. In most cases, you can also use PayPal Credit.

Southwest Airlines uses Uplift to break the cost of the flight up into fixed monthly payments. It also accepts PayPal Credit and Klarna.

Sunwing connects Canadian cities with destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. You can pay for plane tickets in monthly installments through Uplift.

United Airlines

Use Uplift, PayPal Credit, or Klarna to pay for United Airlines flights in monthly installments. The company also has a program called FareLock that allows you to pay a fee to hold a fare for three, seven, or 14 days before paying for it in full. If you decide not to buy the ticket, you forfeit the fee. This service is offered only on itineraries wholly operated by United Airlines and/or United Express.

Online Travel Agencies Offering Monthly Payment Options

Alternative airlines.

Any ticket booked through Alternative Airlines can be paid for in weekly, biweekly, or monthly installments with Uplift. The online travel agency markets itineraries by more than 600 airlines, and Uplift financing can be used for all of them. You can also split payments through Klarna.

CheapOair.com

CheapOair uses Affirm to offer customers a monthly payment option.

Funjet Vacations

Funjet Vacations uses Uplift to offer monthly payments for its flights and vacation packages.

Priceline uses Affirm to handle monthly payments. Select the "monthly payments" option on the secure billing step of the booking process and choose from three-, six-, or 12-month options. Alternatively, break it up into four payments over six weeks using Klarna.

How Buy-now, Pay-later Services Work

Airlines and travel agencies partner with BNPL services like the travel-specific Uplift or the more broadly available Affirm to offer monthly payment options. Some take payments through PayPal Credit and/or Klarna. Learn about the differences between these services and how they work.

Affirm allows customers to pay monthly or every two weeks. Terms can last up to 48 months for the largest loans, but more typically, they last up to a year. Interest rates vary by person, ranging from 0% to 36% APR, and are determined at the time of sign-up. A down payment and credit check might be required when you apply for a loan.

To use Affirm, you will need a phone number to use as an account login. The service is available only in the U.S. and Canada. Once you've created your account and gotten approved for a loan amount, you can set up auto-pay or pay each month via the app or website. You can find a full list of Affirm's travel partners, including airlines and accommodations, on its website .

PayPal Credit

This is a monthly payment option provided by travel companies that take PayPal. Typically, you'll choose PayPal as your payment method, and once you sign into your PayPal account, you can choose PayPal Credit . As of 2023, the variable purchase APR is about 28% for new accounts, but you can avoid paying interest altogether if you pay the loan off within six months. Loan applications are subject to credit approval.

Uplift is the leading pay-over-time financing service in the travel space, partnering with cruise lines, hotel chains, airlines, and more. Once you have selected a product, like your flight, you are shown a per-month rate based on the price of the items in your shopping cart. When you get to the payment page and choose monthly payment as your option, you will be asked for some personal details, and once you click "check rate," you will be told whether you've been approved. Uplift offers an APR of 0% to 36% based on your credit. You won't be penalized for paying late or early, and you can set up autopay so the money comes out of your account automatically.

Klarna breaks up the price of your ticket into monthly payments or four equal payments to be made two weeks apart. Add the Klarna extension to your Chrome browser or download the app on your phone, then book your flight as usual, selecting Klarna at checkout. The first payment will be due upfront. Klarna offers an APR of 0% to about 30%.

It's a testament to the hospitality industry's adaptability in meeting diverse customer needs, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a comfortable stay without the barriers of credit checks.

Who does book now pay later flights to work for?

Anyone and everyone is eligible to book now and pay later. As we don’t perform any credit checks or charge interest, which guarantees you an immediate approval, with just the standard documents for booking a trip. You can book a personal trip or a vacation package for you and your family within a time period of 120 days, before your departure date.

Also, as our valued customer, you also have access to a special opportunity of enjoying a travel loan, i.e., fully interest-free.

No credit check airline ticket financing works for people with an average credit rating which restricts them from premium travel reward cards that mandate a stellar credit rating. Likewise, if you are building credit but are not in favor of revolving credits, then the discipline of fixed monthly payments is perfect. Borrowing without knowing how to pay isn’t a brilliant idea and defaulting on a credit card loan just jeopardizes your rating.

Therefore, you have all the reasons to take a book now payment plan, if your travel date cannot be changed—this involves things like emergencies. Of course, this also means that if you are expecting money in the future, like a tax refund, or expect to make savings on your budget, you can still go ahead and check out these flight options.

Book Now Pay Later plan does not apply to:

  • People without a valid credit/debit card from a Canada or the US bank
  • Fly Now, Pay Later. All the payments must be made 10 days before the departure date or based on your payment plan.

Once we finalize your reservation, you will receive a confirmation email with your itinerary, airline confirmation number and all other details about your trip. You can also view the status of your reservation through your “My Booking Page“ available to you at all times.

How do I check-in?

In person at the airport or you can also check in directly on your airline’s website available only 24 hours before your departure. You need to know your airline confirmation number which can be found on your ‘My Booking Page’ .

How do I get my boarding pass?

After you check-in (either online or in person), the airline will issue your boarding pass. Please note that you can only check-in 24 hours before your departure.

Where can I find my e-ticket number?

You can find your e-ticket number directly on your ‘My Booking Page’ on the top right side of the page. You can also find it in your ticket conformation email mentioned’’E-Ticket’’

Do I need a visa for my trip?

Depending on your destination, you may need to obtain a visa before your travels as many countries will deny you entry if you don’t have the proper documents. You can check your status about the visa in https://visacentral.com/

I missed my flight, what should I do?

If you missed your flight, contact your airline [Please connect this page to the Airline list] for further assistance. If something within your control caused you to miss your departing flight, the airline will automatically cancel your entire flight itinerary and the value of your tickets will be lost. If you were issued a multi-ticket booking, which is a roundtrip flight with 2 one-way fares, the airline might only cancel the initial segment of your flight which was missed. Cancellation policies are entirely governed by airlines; any comments, questions or concerns should be directed to them.

What is Trip Support’s cancellation policy?

Most discounted airline tickets are non-refundable. Although non-refundable tickets are the most economical, they are also the most restrictive and do not allow refunds. These restrictions make it possible for Trip Support to continue to offer better fare prices in addition to our existing deeply discounted airfares.

A Working Holiday should be nothing short of fun, exciting and the adventure of a lifetime. Stressful? Hard? We don’t believe in that. That’s why we have designed our Working Holiday trips to help you secure a local full-time job in a great location, often with some amazing perks, right from the get-go and before you land. And here is how we do it:

After completing your quick & easy registration (by clicking the red ‘Check dates’ button) you’ll be given access to gWorld - your very first, and very cool, digital travel buddy & app.

This will enable you to get your adventure started off right. You can plan your trip, get exclusive deals, access over a dozen courses from language basics to bar work & customer service 101, and even make some new travel buddies on our exclusive social network.

On the human side of things, you will be assigned a dedicated Trip Coordinator. They will guide you through the next steps and answer all your questions, even those ‘better be safe than sorry’ questions the ‘rents might have.

They’ll also help you with pesky visas. No guesswork – only the right paperwork in your hands, before you leave. These applications are often a one-shot deal, so not something you want to screw up.

Your Personal Travel Concierge will help with flights, insurance, and any add-ons you’d like for your trip. These are real humans too – no robots here.

And of course, your guaranteed job match, that almost always happens before your arrival. This means you can jump on the plane feeling confident and excited, rather than nervous and worried about how long that travel budget will last (like most people winging it are doing right now!)

Once you arrive to Vancouver, there will be a private driver waiting to take you to your city-centre accommodation. This means no getting ripped off by taxi drivers or desperately trying to hook on to that airport WIFI to figure out where you’re going or cramming into public transport underneath someone’s smelly armpit.

Your included accommodation is 3 nights at the best hostel in downtown Vancouver. And being downtown means you're within a short walk to some super funky bars, breweries and beaches. You’ll meet other Global Travellers while you relax and settle in, then shake off the jet lag with a night out on the town.

During these first few days you’ll be heading out on some awesome tours, bound to make all your friends and family back home jealous. First up, a hop-on, hop-off Vancouver sightseeing tour – the very best way to see the highlights of the city in just one day, and getting off & back on wherever you please to look around (or maybe even to start a pub crawl with other Global Travellers you met through our app).

Next, a Vancouver Lookout pass where you'll head up to one of the city's tallest towers for the ultimate bird's-eye view of the city and surrounding mountains.

We’ll also help with all your local life essentials, including:

- A local SIM card with data and unlimited call & SMS credit for your first month, so you can stay in touch with your new friends and employer, get an Uber late at night, or send messages back home.

- Your Canadian bank account. Exchange rates? Withdrawal fees? Forget about it. With a local bank account you’ll earn - and spend - in the local currency, saving you money and hassle in the process.

- Help getting your Social Insurance Number which you need to legally work in Canada. This can be a long, tedious process. Our local team will help you with the tips and tricks on how to get this done as easily & fast as possible. Another reason why having our local Global team on your side makes your life easier, and paycheck-ready faster.

Speaking of paychecks. Finding a job on a Working Holiday is one of your main challenges. You’re competing with a bunch of travellers on the same mission as you. Plus – not all businesses will even hire a traveller.

We build & maintain relationships with a huge network of pre-approved local businesses who will hire travellers, just like you, allowing you to be matched with a job before you even arrive, or within the first couple days after getting in.

So that’s your job & income sorted, but what about accommodation? Most host companies provide live-in accommodation (which is an amazing perk and usually given to those who get in early enough), but if yours doesn’t our in-country team will provide you with all the guidance & support to find a safe, comfortable and affordable place to live. (In fact, you may even find your new flat-mate in our social network)

Our support doesn’t stop there either. We’ll be in touch during your trip to make sure everything is going smoothly. If you have any questions or concerns we’re one quick message, DM, email, or carrier pigeon away.

When your trip eventually does come to an end, we’ll get your tax return organised through a partner to ensure you get the most back you’re entitled to, meaning this experience becomes even cheaper!

Word to the wise traveller - those who get started early (6-12+ months in advance) not only have something to look forward to, they usually get matched with the best job opportunities in the best locations.

The first step can be the hardest, but we make sure every step after that is easy. So stop dreaming, start doing, and let’s turn your Canadian Working Holiday dream into reality.

Did you know we have another working holiday trip to Canada? Our Working Holiday in Canada (Plus) trip includes unlimited job matches for the entire length of your working visa, plus more.

Requirements

To qualify for this trip you must meet the visa requirements , and have 6 months of paid work experience by time of arrival.

What extra costs will I have?

Flights, travel insurance, visa, criminal background check, souvenirs & spending money.

The beauty of this trip is that you have the freedom to create your own adventure and you can do it however you please. But, this will be your general timeline of exciting events ahead:

Once you've touched down at Vancouver Airport, your private driver will meet you outside. They'll take you into downtown Vancouver to your initial accommodation at a top-rated hostel in the heart of the city. You'll be within walking distance to all of Vancouver's hot spots, including our Vancouver office! Relax, make some new friends and settle in!

Keep important documents and trip details handy, and take advantage of exclusive Marketplace deals, a vibrant social network, language learning resources, side trips, meet-ups, and more. It's like having all your favorite travel apps merged into one, but even better! But our support doesn't end there. With four international offices, over 100 dedicated staff members, a 24/5 emergency team, and the backing of over 90,000 Global Travellers who have turned their travel dreams into reality with us, rest assured you're in good hands. We also proudly boast the most and best reviews in the biz, and maintain a massive following on our social channels including Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Embark on your next adventure with confidence and ease. Join us and discover the world in a meaningful way!

While we would love to include flights and insurance in our trip packages, it is not feasible to have a fixed price due to the diverse destinations, trip durations, and individual coverage needs of our travellers from around the globe. However, once you register for the trip, we will assign you a dedicated Travel Concierge. They will work closely with you to arrange the ideal flights and insurance tailored to your specific adventure. Rest assured, our team is here to ensure you have a smooth and hassle-free travel experience from start to finish!

When it comes to accommodation, we have some great options available for you. Many of our partner organisations offer staff accommodation as a fantastic perk. This usually entails a shared apartment or house with other like-minded travelers, conveniently located near your job. The best part is that these accommodations are often available at a subsidised rate, allowing you to save more toward side trips and fun! In the event that staff accommodation is not included with your job match, don't worry. Your Arrival Coordinator will be there to provide you with valuable resources and helpful tips on finding a suitable place to stay.

The Standard and Plus Working Holiday trips offer similar features, such as our comprehensive job matching process. However, there are a couple key differences between the two: Standard: With the Standard trip, you will receive a guaranteed job match prior to your arrival*. Plus: The Plus trip includes a guaranteed job match prior to your arrival*, just like the Standard trip. In addition, it offers the unique benefit of a 2nd job match in an entirely new country! This includes any Working Holiday, Au Pair or Tutor trip we offer, except USA, Germany & South Korea. Visa guidance will also be provided, TCs apply. Along with this, the Plus trip also provides additional tours and a side trip to enhance your experience. If you like the idea of working and travelling in more than one country, the Plus option is best suited for you. It provides the opportunity for ongoing exploration and variety during your time abroad. No need to make a decision right away on which option to choose. If you initially book the Standard trip, you can always upgrade to the Plus trip after getting registered and connecting with your dedicated Trip Coordinator.

While we strive to take your preferences into account, it's important to note that we are not a recruitment agency. Therefore, we cannot guarantee job matches in specific professions, fields, or locations. As a foreign worker on a temporary visa, it can be challenging to compete with locals for more specialised positions. Employers often prioritise candidates they can train and retain in the long term, rather than taking a risk on someone who may leave in a year or two, or less. However, the jobs we help organise on your working holiday will offer a fantastic experience. They will be enjoyable and social, allowing you to make new friends, acquire new skills, and have the freedom to explore exciting new places. Our aim is to provide you with an amazing working holiday experience, where you can embrace adventure and create unforgettable memories.

A job match is a seamless process designed to help you secure a suitable job opportunity. Here's how it works: First, we arrange an interview for you, taking into consideration your preferences whenever possible. The interviews are typically conducted virtually over platforms like Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime, making it convenient for you to participate from the comfort of your home before you embark on your trip. The key to a successful job match is simple: attend the interview on time and approach it just like any other professional interview. By demonstrating professionalism and enthusiasm, you'll increase your chances of securing a job offer without any complications. In the unlikely chance you are unsuccessful with your initial interview, our team will get to work organising you another interview. You can rest assured we are committed to finding the right opportunity for you and guiding you through each and every step of the job matching process to ensure success. For more details, please refer to your booking conditions.

Absolutely! While the jobs we help you land usually provide full-time hours, they often come with flexibility that will allow you to take time off for side trips, exploring, and fun. We understand the importance of travel experiences, and our aim is to provide opportunities that balance work and leisure. While the level of flexibility can vary based on the specific job and employer, we strive to match you with positions that provide allowances or arrangements for time off. This way, you can plan and enjoy additional adventures before, during, or after your work placement!

Ever since our inception in 2008, we have been dedicated to providing exceptional job opportunities to our travellers. We take pride in having built the largest network of partner organisations across the country, all vetted and perfectly suited to host a working holidayer. One of the greatest advantages of going Global is that we streamline the entire process for you, meaning, you won't need to go through the hassle of attending job fairs (like our competitors make you do) or spending countless hours job hunting. We take care of the hard work by understanding your job and location preferences, then connect you with one of our awesome partner organisations. We then ensure you are well-prepared for the interview, to help you land a job before you leave home*. To explore all the amazing options available, we invite you to check out our Working Holiday jobs & locations section located above.

The benefits of doing a Working Holiday trip are numerous. It offers you the opportunity to experience a new country, immerse yourself in a different culture, gain international work experience, develop new skills, make lifelong connections, and create unforgettable memories. It is a chance to combine travel and work while exploring a new destination.

We provide comprehensive support throughout your Working Holiday trip, from the initial planning stages until your return home. Our team is available to assist you with visa applications, job placements, accommodation options, and ongoing support from our worldwide offices while you are overseas, including a 24/5 emergency line. We also provide pre-departure guidance and resources to help you prepare for your adventure.

Absolutely! While the earning potential may vary based on your destination and job type, the income you'll receive is more than sufficient to support you comfortably while abroad. It can cover all your living expenses, accommodation, transportation, and even allows for savings to explore your new home or continue travelling afterward. Additionally, many of our partner organisations offer fantastic perks like discounted staff housing, food and beverage, ski passes, and more, helping you save money and make the most of your Working Holiday experience.

After the last unexpected disruption to travel caused by the..c word..people are now more eager than ever to venture out and explore the world, determined not to miss out on any experiences. Global Work & Travel works on a first-in-best-dressed basis. Booking earlier ensures that you don’t miss out on the best intake, season, placements and more! We recommend our travellers take 6-12+ months to plan their trip for a reason - to make sure you’ve got everything organised perfectly, stress-free. As a Global Traveller you’ll get exclusive access to gWorld, our personalised app where you can keep all of your important documents and trip details in one spot and gain insider access to everything Global. This is where you will find exclusive Marketplace Deals, a unique social network to connect you with other like-minded Global Travellers, access to our Academy with an ever-growing range of skills & languages, and so much more. Think all of your favourite apps merged into one, but like, better? Why not give yourself something to look forward to by booking that trip!

Yes you can! Simply tell your Trip Coordinator after booking that your friend is also going and they can link your profiles. For most of our trips we should be able to have you and your friends placed together or nearby. Meaning that you can live, work, play & travel together! But wait there's more! Not only can you travel the world with your besties at your side, you can also earn some extra cash towards your own trip just by referring your friends to Global Work & Travel. You can learn more about the great referral rewards program inside your gWorld account once you join. And for those who decide to go-it-solo, we’ve made it easier to meet other Global Travellers in the same region as you. Just like any other social platform, you’ll be able to interact, share, chat and meet with some really cool people who are doing trips just like you!

At Global Work & Travel, we share a deep love for animals and fully understand the special bond you have with your pet. We recognise the challenges of embarking on a trip without them. Due to travel restrictions, requirements, and limited pet-friendly accommodations among our host organisations, we regretfully cannot facilitate their inclusion in the journey. However, many of our customers choose to entrust their pets to a family member or friend, embark on their adventure, and return home to wagging tails and furry cuddles.

We know that life can get in the way of travel, so all our trips come with a great deal of flexibility. In most cases, if you cannot travel on your selected date, you can place your trip on hold to deal with whatever is holding you back, and continue in the future without incurring any penalty. You may also have the option of transferring to an entirely different trip and destination as well, or even transferring your trip to a friend or family member. In the event that you need to outright cancel your trip, if you give us 84* days notice you can do so with only a 50% cancellation fee. Your refund of the balance will come in the form of a Store Credit which you can put toward any other trip that we offer, including tours through third-party providers, as well as holidays through DealsAway.com, and is valid for 2 years from date of issue. As international travel can be complex, your options are based on the progress of your trip organisation and our support team can assist you in finding the best solution for your needs.

How to Grab the Fly Now Pay Later Work Abroad Promotion From Fil-Global

Studying abroad has grown increasingly more popular among learners. For most international students, the reasons are likely to be a combination of gaining a high-quality education, immersion in a new culture, and improving chances for future employment.

Unfortunately, when the pandemic struck, this has caused the temporary stoppage of the growing number of students who want to fly and continue their education abroad. Several countries imposed travel bans, lockdowns, and many lost their jobs which lead to financial difficulties.

But the good news is, with the roll-out of the vaccine happening today, more and more countries are opening their borders to international students after almost two years of placing restrictions. Additionally, the resumption of in-person classes for international students is now gradually happening.

Since we truly understand your needs and value the importance of reaching your dreams, Fil-Global Immigration Services Corporation took a leap of faith and started offering programs and promotions called the "Fly Now, Pay Later" (FNPL) in partnership with some of the best schools in Canada.

What’s More in the Fly Now Pay Later Work Abroad Program?

fly now pay later work abroad

The FNPL is designed to ease your financial burden by splitting part of the processing costs into multiple payments. Normally when you sign up, payable fees include Visa Processing. But, when under the"Fly Now, Pay Later" program, the processing fee can be settled on an installment basis for 3 to 6 months and payment will start only once you are already in Canada.

The tuition fee and the letter of acceptance (LOA), however, will be paid as usual and the school would usually require a deposit of around $3,000 for the LOA to be released. But in some instances, Fil-Global does offer a $1,000 promotion―so, watch out!

If you want to enjoy more savings, a lot of our partnered schools offer scholarships for international students. For example, Canada MBA programs provide scholarships of up to CAD 10,000 with balances that can be amortized for the next two years. Aside from the budget-friendly offer, this could be an exciting program for you since MBA provides a pathway to permanent residency!

How to Avail the Fly Now Pay Later Work Abroad Promotion?

Here’s what you need to do to avail the FNPL promo:

1. Choose your course

Studying for a degree can take one to four years and it can be quite expensive, but it will also be a worthwhile investment and a life-changing adventure.

Start by knowing the right course to take. Review your educational background, experience, and preferences. With the number of courses made available in every university, choosing what field to take can be confusing.

Here are some of the areas of study available for international students:

Engineering

Computer Science

Information Technology

Business Administration

Health Sciences

Social Sciences

Hospitality and Tourism

Fashion Design

2. Choose your school

fly now pay later work abroad

One of the most challenging parts about deciding to study abroad is that you get to choose from different universities across the globe. Each of these schools offers plenty of courses to choose from.

Canada, for one, is a well-known country for its top colleges and universities . Fortunately, most of the institutions here have partnered with Fil-Global Immigration Services for the "Fly Now, Pay Later" program.

Here are some of our partner schools for Canada:

Sault College

University of Canada West

Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Centennial College

Humber College

These schools do not necessarily require IELTS for you to get admitted . In most instances, you only need to provide proof that you finished your studies at a school that used the English language for your entire studies.

3. Check the featured "Fly Now, Pay Later" school

Once you have decided on what school and course to take, you can check the featured institution in the "Fly Now, Pay Later" promotion. If your chosen school is yet to be the highlight of the month, you can wait until your school gets featured. Alternatively, you can take the college or university actively offered and get the course closest to your option.

4. Have your documents assessed

travel and work in canada and pay later

Finally, you can now begin your application process! The Fil-Global team will assess your application through the documents that you have submitted. You can check the list of required documents needed for the assessment on the Fil-Global website .

The assessment should show whether your credentials are well-suited to your choice of degree. The one-on-one assessment comes with a corresponding fee, but you can always choose to attend the live group orientation on our Facebook page and get to know some general information first.

5. Time to become a Fil-Global member!

Following the assessment & consultation, it is now time to become a member and enjoy a hassle-free process! Membership will take place after the signing of the contract with Fil-Global. The contract stipulates the services and assistance you will get with Fil-Global.

Are you thrilled and ready to start your adventure abroad? You may want to take more tips and advice on the “Fly Now, Pay Later” and work abroad program with the Fil-Global team. Don’t hesitate to contact us! We’d be happy to sit with you either virtually or in person!

Canada to introduce new rules around off-campus work hours for international students

From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

News release

International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Students Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

April 29, 2024—Ottawa— International students enrich Canada’s social, cultural and economic fabric. That is why, in recent months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has introduced reforms to the International Student Program, to ensure system integrity while protecting students from fraud and financial vulnerability.

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced today that the temporary policy allowing students to work more than 20 hours per week off campus will come to an end on April 30, 2024, and it will not be extended. This fall, we intend to change the number of hours students may work off campus per week to 24 hours.

Students who come to Canada must be here to study. As such, allowing students to work up to 24 hours per week will ensure they focus primarily on their studies, while having the option to work, if necessary.

As we head into the summer session, students who have a scheduled academic break can continue working unlimited hours.

In developing this change, we looked at the needs of students, policies in other countries, as well as research that has shown that academic outcomes suffer the more a student works while studying. It also strikes the appropriate balance so students have the option to work without compromising academic outcomes. More details will be shared in due course.

We also continue to develop the new Recognized Institutions Framework to reward postsecondary institutions that set high standards for selecting, supporting and retaining international students. We will continue to support and protect international students from financial vulnerability and keep protecting the integrity of the International Student Program.

“Working off campus helps international students gain work experience and offset some of their expenses. As international students arrive in Canada, we want them to be prepared for life here and have the support they need to succeed. However, first and foremost, people coming to Canada as students must be here to study, not work. We will continue working to protect the integrity of our student program.” – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts

Recent studies conducted in the US and Canada have shown that there is a considerable decline in academic performance for students working more than 28 hours per week, and that working more than 24 hours per week increases the chances that a student will drop out of their program.

Most countries that welcome international students set limits on the number of hours they may work while they study. Australia recently changed its policy to allow a student to work 48 hours every 2 weeks. In the US, students must meet additional criteria before being permitted to work off campus at all.

In December 2023, the Government of Canada raised the cost-of-living threshold that students must meet to be approved for a study permit so they are financially prepared for life in Canada and are not as dependent on working.

International students who begin a college program delivered through a public-private curriculum licensing arrangement on or after May 15, 2024, will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit when they graduate. Those who already started this type of program prior to May 15, 2024, will still be able to access a post-graduation work permit, provided they meet all other criteria .

The new letter of acceptance (LOA) verification process has been a success. Since its launch on December 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024, IRCC has

  •  received almost 162,000 LOAs for verification
  • confirmed nearly 142,000 LOAs as valid directly with designated learning institutions (DLIs)
  • identified almost 9,000 LOAs that didn’t match any LOA issued by a DLI or that the DLI had already cancelled before the foreign national applied for a study permit

Fines mounting for violations in Canada’s temporary foreign worker programs

travel and work in canada and pay later

Temporary foreign workers from Mexico plant strawberries on a farm in Mirabel, Que., on May 6, 2020. Graham Hughes/The Canadian Press

The federal government penalized nearly 200 companies last year for violating the rules of its temporary foreign worker programs, resulting in record fines for infractions such as wage theft and abuse in the workplace.

Ottawa reached 194 decisions against non-compliant employers in 2023 and handed out $2.7-million in penalties, an average of $13,800 per decision, according to a Globe and Mail analysis of figures published by the government. Some employers have also been suspended from hiring temporary labour from outside the country.

While the government reached more decisions of non-compliance in 2021, last year set a new high for fines. And 2024 is shaping up to be even worse.

Ottawa to rein in number of temporary residents and announce targets in the fall

So far this year, the average fine is nearly $29,000, according to data pulled by The Globe in late April. In 2019, it was roughly $3,200.

In mid-April, a lobster processor in New Brunswick , Pêcheries LeBreton & Fils Ltée, was barred for two years from hiring temporary foreign workers and was hit with the largest fine published to date: $365,750.

Canadian companies have sharply increased their hiring of temporary workers from abroad in recent years, helped by federal policy changes that broadened access to such workers. The government has said its efforts are aimed at addressing labour shortages.

But as companies were granted more access to that pool of workers, some economists and labour advocates raised concerns about the potential for exploitation.

“There’s a subset of companies that are using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program because they’re very poorly managed to begin with,” said Catherine Connelly, a professor at McMaster University and the author of Enduring Work: Experiences with Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program . “They are not able to keep local workers. So their Hail Mary pass is ‘Okay, we’re gonna get temporary foreign workers who cannot quit.’”

The federal government inspects employers who use programs with closed work permits, which tie an employee to a specific employer. The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which falls under the purview of the Employment Department, and some parts of the International Mobility Program (IMP), which is run by the Immigration Department, have closed work permits.

Companies may be notified in advance of an inspection, and those assessments can be random or based on tips, previous non-compliance or the suspicion of wrongdoing.

Employment and Social Development Canada completed roughly 2,140 TFWP-related inspections in the 2022-23 fiscal year. Slightly more than 1,000 were found compliant, while 117 were deemed non-compliant.

Most Canadians support bringing in temporary foreign workers to fill jobs, says poll

The remaining 1,011 inspections found the employers “compliant with justification.” This means there were initial issues during the inspection, but the employer was able to justify any discrepancies and take corrective action.

“There are no circumstances in which the employer is not given the opportunity to take corrective action,” said Mila Roy, a spokesperson for the department, in a statement. “However, not all employers providing justification and taking corrective actions are automatically deemed compliant with justification.”

Steven Meurrens, an immigration lawyer in Vancouver , said there can be “super innocent” reasons for why an employer initially runs into trouble. He provided the example of a company that accidentally underpaid an employee for working on a statutory holiday but corrected the error a week later.

“This is all before the inspection even starts,” he said. “Some officers will record that as non-compliant for that week. But it was justified because they later compensated the employee and they realized that they made the mistake.”

When companies are found non-compliant, they can be fined, barred for one or more years from hiring temporary foreign workers – or both. Permanent bans from using migrant work programs are exceptionally rare. The penalty is based on several factors, including the severity of the violation and any history of non-compliance.

The government does not publish the specific details of violations, but it does provide the general reasons for non-compliance. In the case of Pêcheries LeBreton & Fils Ltée, the lobster processor did not ensure that its workplace was free of abuse or reprisal and the pay or working conditions did not match or exceed what was listed on the offer of employment, among other infractions.

Non-compliant companies tend to be smaller firms, many of them in the agriculture, restaurant and trucking industries.

Larger companies that use migrant work programs are “generally compliant,” said Stephen Green, managing partner at immigration law firm Green and Spiegel. “The system is working because companies are terrified to be on that list” published by the government.

Temporary Foreign Worker program sees 68% jump in approvals

The Globe’s analysis found that, as of April 26, 478 companies that had been deemed non-compliant were eligible to hire temporary foreign workers again because they had paid fines and served temporary bans, where applicable.

However, at least 350 employers were deemed ineligible because they had not paid their penalties. Collectively, those companies owe more than $3.5-million. (The government website lists infractions since 2016.)

In writing her book, Dr. Connelly spoke with many companies that use the TFWP. Many of them “have not been audited and have never even heard of anyone being audited,” she said. “Some of the employers were disclosing to me bad practices that probably would not survive an audit.”

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said about 24 per cent of companies that employed workers with closed work permits through the IMP had undergone compliance checks between April 1, 2019, and the end of 2023.

“My sense is that the enforcement is still very weak in terms of the reach,” Dr. Connelly said. “When they are auditing people, they very frequently seem to find problems.”

She also said some of the fines felt small. “That’s not really much of a disincentive” to misusing the programs.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said Pêcheries LeBreton & Fils Ltée was fined in mid-February. In fact, it was mid-April.
