How I Did My Dream Europe Trip for Less than ₱100,000 (All-In)

Some say that travelling to Europe is only for the rich and famous because of the hefty price tag that goes along with it. Well, I beg to differ; I say that travelling to Europe is for everyone who’s determined to go there. If you really, really want to go to the other side of the world, you will find all the ways just to be there, no excuses.

I believe that spending money on experiences is more satisfying than spending it on temporary things that can diminish over time and can be snatched or stolen. Experiences last a lifetime and memories stay forever.

So I saved a lot for this trip, disciplined myself not to use the money on my travel jar especially during tempting days when there are mall sales or bazaars. I was able to resist the urge of buying unnecessary things and as a reward; I made my Europe dream trip a reality.

For 19 days of spring, I was able to go to 4 countries and 11 cities for less than ₱100,000! How? by researching a LOT and planning wisely.

Here are some tips on how to spend less in Europe:

Book flights as early as possible because prices go higher as the departure date becomes nearer.

Roundtrip flights are much cheaper but the expense will almost be the same considering that you need to go back to your first destination. I bought a multicity ticket – Manila – Rome – Paris – Manila so I can save time exploring cities than flying back to Rome.

Take note that there are some countries or cities that have higher flight rates, for example, Manila (PH) to Denmark (DE) is more expensive than Manila (PH) to Rome (IT). Same with intercity transfers, Venice (IT) to Paris (FR) is more expensive than Rome (IT) to Paris (FR).

Maximise the free luggage allowance of airlines (20kg- 25kg, depends on airline) and carry-on baggage allowance. Extra luggage fees will just add to your budget.

Another tip that I learned from my couchsurfer is that it’s much cheaper if you fly from Malaysia or Singapore going to Europe. You can just buy a cheap ticket from Manila to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore via Cebu Pacific Air or Air Asia and then fly to any European country. Sign up for a free membership of these airlines so you can get notified in advance about the latest deals.

Accommodation

One of the reasons why I saved a lot in this trip is through Couchsurfing. I have free accommodation in my entire trip. Couchsurfing is an online travel community where you can request for a couch to sleep for days or weeks. It’s more than just a free space to rest your head at night; it’s an exchange of culture as well. Luckily, I have great Couchsurfing hosts who opened their homes and trusted me their keys. They also welcomed me with their local dishes and wines, showed me hidden local spots, and taught me how to speak their language and many more.

Aside from Couchsurfing, you can find cheap places to stay like Airbnb or hostels. The average stay per night cost around ₱1,500 – ₱2,500.

In Airbnb, you can rent the whole apartment, private room or shared room.

A hostel is a budget friendly place that offers single or dorm rooms. Here, you will meet a lot of travellers same as you – travelling on a budget. Most hostels have a common area, a good venue to interact with other guests. Make friends with them, share some tips and ideas about travelling; they can also be your travel buddy too if you have the same landmarks to visit.

If you want to be a bit fancy, you can check some deal sites like Groupon Italy, Groupon France or Groupon Belgium for good discounts on fancy hotels, restaurants and many more. The website is written in their local language so just open Google Translate to help you understand the deals.

There are lots of options to travel from one country/city to another – trains, planes, buses or trams.

In Italy, all my transfers were regional trains. It’s much cheaper than high-speed trains with minimal stops and transfers. The only hassle is that sometimes, transferring from one train to another allows you only 2 minutes to figure out where is the next train to your final destination.

From Italy, I flew to Belgium using Ryanair. It’s a budget airline similar to CebuPacificAir; check their promos so you can save more. I bought my ticket for only ₱1,646 (with 15kg baggage allowance).

There are other budget airlines you can also check like Easyjet, Vueling and Transavia.

From Belgium to Netherlands, I used SNCB train. The ticket price varies on the time of departure. Make sure the time fits your itinerary, or you can just tweak your plan a bit to save some money.

My last stop was Paris. I booked Thalys, a high-speed train from Netherlands to France for ₱2,704. It’s a bit expensive but I bought the ticket to save more time and see Paris longer as I only have 2 days to see its beauty.

Another way of travelling around Europe is Blablacar. It’s like Uberpool where you’ll share a ride with other people who have the same destination.

Tip : ALWAYS have coins.

Ticket booths in Europe close early but thank God there are ticket machines. The only challenge is that some machines only accept coins like the one in Maastricht, Netherlands. The ticket from Maastricht to Amsterdam cost €25.50 (₱1,326); it’s a challenge to change bills to coins especially if the train will leave in few minutes (time pressure!). I remember asking random people to change my bills, some did, but it wasn’t enough. So I bought some stuff at two stores just to get coins for a change. Whew!!!

Communication

Roaming charges are expensive; buying a simcard that you will use for weeks is pointless. What I do is maximise free wifis of establishments. There are lots of free wifi spots in Europe (places I’ve been) and you only need to register your full name and email address to connect. You can download phone applications for free like Viber or Whatsapp to communicate with your loved ones back home.

Food in Europe is expensive especially if you’ll eat at restaurants with Michelin stars. If you avoid restaurants near tourist spots, you can find a good meal for ₱200 and above.

Breakfast, meaning bread or croissant and cappuccino cost around ₱150. If you are a heavy eater like me, budget around ₱250.

Lunch costs around ₱300-400. You can either eat a sandwich or a big slice of pizza.

Dinner is always a good time to eat; it’s a treat for a long day of walking. Budget around ₱500-₱700 for a mouthwatering meal.

Desserts, mostly gelato is around ₱100-200 per scoop. If you’re a gelato lover, save a bit more to try hundreds of flavours in different gelaterias.

In Italy, there are fountains everywhere. Bring a water bottle to refill and save ₱120.

I was lucky enough to have Couchsurfing hosts who welcomed me with local food and wine. Sometimes, we buy some fresh stuff at the grocery and have cooking lessons but most of the time, I just watch them cook as I nibble cheese leftovers.🙂

There are lots of beautiful places in Europe, iconic landmarks, rich museums, skyscrapers, etc. that are worth a visit. Paris, France has lots of beautiful museums you can visit; if you have limited budget and time, you can just spend one day feeding your artistic soul in one museum like Louvre — the home of the famous Mona Lisa.

If you are sure that you want to go to a museum or any place with entrance fees, I highly suggest booking a ticket online so you can skip the long queues that can eat up your time.

I only bought tickets (with no guide) to landmarks that I wanted to see like Colosseo in Rome or Louvre Museum in Paris. Having a guided tour is an additional expense so what I did is I discretely joined some group tours.🙂

With a year-round warm climate, expect hot weather when visiting the Philippines at any time of the year. Sea breezes prevail in the coastal regions between November and February, so travel during this time if you wish to take the edge off the heat. January to May are considered the optimum times to visit though, as it is best to avoid the typhoon season which runs from July to October and involves heavy rain, flooding and high winds.

Geography and environment

Consisting of more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines archipelago is located in the South-East of  Asia , in between the South China Sea and the Philippine Sea. Being a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is home to many active volcanoes and a staggering amount of biodiversity, with thousands of plant, mammal, fish and bird species living on land and in the sea. As a very mountainous country, the Philippines is dotted with numerous peaks, which give way to deep valleys that are often studded with rivers and streams. Tropical rainforest occupies much of the landmass, with most of the population living on the low lying coastal areas.

1. ati-atihan.

With a history that dates all the way back to 1210, this flamboyant festival is considered one of the Philippines' best. Think massive ostentatious costumes, loud drumming, floats of parading dancers, riotous crowds and a healthy dose of partying and you've got Ati-Atihan - the Philippines' best shot at Rio Carnaval.

2. Grand Cordillera Festival

Baguio reserves the fourth last week of November to celebrate life and local culture with ethnic songs, dance, costume and food. This festival spreads peace and tolerance and provides an interesting snapshot of the lives of the ethnic people of the northern Luzon area.

3. Dinagyang

Iloilo City gets its chance to party with its own version of Ati-Atihan. City streets are decked out with colourful banners, street stalls sizzle with barbecued pork, and chicken and costumed dancers compete for glory.

4. Feast of Our Lady of Candles

This annual display of epic religious pageantry features a procession of the patroness, fiesta queen and court through the streets and town center of Jaro. Locals carry candles and a statue of the Virgin Mary to the town cathedral, where crowds of people wait. This spirited and vibrant festival is a great introduction to Filipino culture and religious celebration.

5. Obando Fertility Festival

Want to see couples dance through the streets in aid of hopefully producing a child? Each year, the town of Bulacan holds this festival for childless couples who wish to produce children. Couples dance down the street to the local church, dance up the aisle and attend mass in honor of the three local patron saints.

Large cities and tourist areas have internet access available at cyber cafes, but expect limited internet access in remote and rural areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in the Philippines?

Cell phone receptivity is at a high rate in the large cities, but coverage may be patchy or less reliable in mountainous places, remote areas and on some islands. Ensure global roaming is activated before leaving home.

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation whilst in the Philippines. The standard toilet is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to although Western style toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in the Philippines?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in the Philippines. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating

Are credit cards accepted widely in the Philippines?

Credit cards are usually accepted by large hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist-orientated retailers, but less so by smaller vendors like small, family-run restaurants, market stalls and guesthouses. Be sure to carry enough cash to cover small purchases as credit cards may not always be accepted.

What is ATM access like in the Philippines?

Travelers will be able to find ATMs that accept foreign cards in the large cities but less so in remote towns and rural areas. Be sure to have enough cash before leaving the city as ATMs may not always be available outside of metropolitan areas.

A Week In Palawan, Philippines

One Week in Palawan comprises three cities: Puerto Princesa, El Nido and Coron, in that order. Hopping from one city to another means joining different sets of tourists for that occasion only. Be ready to mingle, particularly the long road trip of 5 hours from Puerto Princesa to El Nido in a medium-sized van. This is not a private tour; you are at once mingled with whomever at the discretion of your tour operator. And be ready to spend because vendors of all shades pop out of nowhere offering useful and not-so-useful items. Tips to your guides/helpers are encouraged as they serve you as best they could to a fault, as they are integral to a decent means of livelihood. The Palawan tour is well-organized, the accommodations superb, the experience memorable. Value-for-money package tour, airfare, shipfare (El Nido to Coron) included. Two-thumbs up!!

This trip was excellent! Moya, my personal agent, was amazing and made my trip (as a solo woman traveler) comfortable and special. Moya provided daily itineraries, point of contacts, and handled any special requests quickly! He even provided what to expect, what to bring, and what to look forward to even BEFORE the trip began. 10 Days Do The Philippines Adventure Tour - Palawan Islands

Just finished the 10 days Philippines tour carried out by Do You Travel. At the beginning, when we figured out that most participants in our group of travelers are single and/or much younger than us, my wife (62) and I (68) thought we had comitted a mistake selecting this trip. The itinerary, the organisation and, above all, very positive group dynamics proved us wrong! We think the biggest merit for this goes to our tour guide Jovain Orlina! We were observing this young man handling complex organisational issues and even more complex (inter)personal challenges with remarkable ease and with passion at the same time. He had a nice word for everyone, open smile in every situation and he managed to reach full identification with the group as a whole. Jovain became part of us. He resolved all problems with skill and dedication. He made us feel relaxed and confident, he opened our hearts and, together with other members of the group, created relaxed mood throughout the tour. Some distracting events like, for example, overall disatisfaction of one group member with the tour, Jovain dealt with patience, in wise and thoughtful manner. However there is much room for significant improvement of one important aspects of the tour. Accomodation could and should be better! The food was for the most part ok, but some selected hotels were not even able to serve a decent breakfast. Rooms were small and in some cases not very clean. Overall, great tour, great group and excellent guide made us enjoy this trip a lot. The best part of the tour was a 3-day cruising expedition from El Nido to Coron on board of Tropical Paradise 7 boat. Excellent cook, skillfull, discrete and attentive crew made us feel thrilled and safe. This was a memorable experience, indeed. Thank you Jovain, thank you Do You Travel. ????

Sagada & Banaue Rice Terraces 4-Day Tour

The trip was well worth it. All of the sights were beautiful and worth the long bus trips to and from Sagada and Banaue. It was a small group tour was only two couples. Fred was great as a tour guide. The Kamayan feast was very memorable and tasty at Bangaan on the last day. One of the best tours we’ve ever been on. Would definitely recommend it.

This was one of the best trips I've done. The itinerary was the perfect mix of activities and down time & I felt, hit the key places I'd travel to if doing it fully solo. Whilst the tour itself and the people I met on it were a big part of me having the best time, it wouldn't have been the same without our tour leader Andri. He helped join the group together before we even started and made everyone feel included once we got there. He was the best mix of chilled and reliable, super knowledgeable and put the needs of the group first like the wonderfully caring human he is. We always knew what we were doing and when and it felt like he made the trip run so smoothly - I only had to worry about turning up and having a good time.
