Jeff Beck announces mammoth list of US tour dates, including a string of shows with Ann Wilson and ZZ Top

The shows follow the release of Beck’s collaborative album with Johnny Depp, 18, and kick off in Texas on September 23

Jeff Beck 2022 US Tour dates

British guitar legend Jeff Beck has announced a 27-date US tour, beginning September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater, in Del Valle, Texas.

The first six shows will see Beck share a bill with ZZ Top and, for selected dates, former Heart vocalist Ann Wilson , on a brief jaunt across Texas, Tennessee and Alabama.

Beck will then undertake a solo run beginning October 1 in Atlanta, GA at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, through to November 12 at the Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada.

Reportedly, the bulk of the tour’s setlist is going to focus on Beck’s recent album, 18 (a collaborative project with Johnny Depp), which has given the guitar legend his first top 10 album entry on the Billboard chart.

However, we’re told the guitarist is also promising to pay tribute to friends and influences, alongside some older material, with his interpretations of Mahavishnu Orchestra’s You Know You Know and The Beatles’ A Day in the Life , plus Brush with the Blues all set to make appearances.

Speaking of appearances, we wonder if Depp will be showing up for any of the dates.   Depp previously joined Beck onstage for a number of shows, including a gig in the UK city of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Beck’s revealed another star collaboration – a guest spot on Ozzy Osbourne track Patient Number 9 , back in June.

Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944) is a notoriously influential and inspiring English rock guitarist, who has played with the Yardbirds, the The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Born in the London Borough of Sutton, UK, Beck began his musical excursions singing in his local church choir before learning to play a borrowed guitar and making his instruments. Inspired to play after hearing Les Paul, B.B. King and Steve Cropper, throughout the early ‘60s Beck played in a string of bands including the Rumbles and the Tridents and made his first vinyl appearance as a session guitarist on the Fitz and Startz single “I’m Not Running Away”.

At the request of session man Jimmy Page, The Yardbirds recruited Beck to replace Eric Clapton as lead guitarist, during Beck’s 20-month tenure The Yardbirds recorded the majority of their most popular and revered songs.

After being kicked out of the Yardbirds for rarely showing up and completing a short solo project which resulted in the two solo UK hit singles “Hi Ho Silver Lining” and “Tallyman”, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group. The Jeff Beck Group temporarily had a line-up of Beck, ex-Shadow man Jet Harris on bass, Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on guitar and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The band’s first release “Truth” (1968) performed significantly better than the second “Beck-Ola” (1969) and resentment ended the band in 1969.

After a serious car accident in 1970 and a failed idea to start a power-trio with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, Beck formed a new version of the Jeff Beck Group. The reformation however didn’t cause much of a stir with the albums “Rough and Ready (1971) and “Jeff Beck Group” (1972), and with the the breakup of the band Cactus, Beck, Appice and Bogert formed a power-trio in 1973.

In 1975 after a quiet period for the guitarist, Beck release the instrumental jazz-fusion album “Blow by Blow” which garnered critical acclaim as did his follow-up with Jan Hammer on the 1976 album “Wired”. Releases from Beck after this time appeared fewer and further between with his next release the Jan Hammer-contributed “There and Back” arrived in 1980 after which Beck toured extensively, before retiring again.

Five years later in 1986 Beck released the pop/rock album “Flash” produced by Nile Rodgers. On the album the single “People Get Ready” features vocals from Rod Stewart, as well as featuring the Grammy winning instrumental single “Escape”. Prior to the release of the Grammy award winning “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas” in 1989, Beck played lead guitar on Mick Jagger’s second solo album “Primitive Cool”.

In 1992 Beck contributed lead guitar on the Roger Water comeback album “Amused to Death” before releasing a tribute album to Gene Vincent entitled “Crazy Legs” in 1993. After a six-year break came “Who Else! You Had It Coming” in 1999, followed by “Jeff” in 2001, the live set “Performing This Week: Live at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club” in 2008, and “Emotion & Commontion” in 2010. The album won two Grammys for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Beck subsequently release a live album titled “Live and Exclusive from the Grammy Museum in 2010, followed by a tribute album to Les Paul entitled “Rock & Roll Party” the same year.

Live reviews

It's just so hard to describe Jeff Beck. You have to see him. Being one of the pioneers of rock, playing with the Yardbirds in the 60's, went from their wailing blues to psychedelic blues as the three (Beck Clapton Page) guitarists divulged into Cream and Led Zeppelin. Jeff evolved into a modern guitar God enigma.

He has smooth riffs, blending into another with complete control of his effects, never using them repeatedly for lack of musicality. His quality of playing is always forefront to the gimmicks. You could give him a cheap guitar and he will sound like Jeff Beck because of his skill of playing.

His "People Get Ready" live instrumental rendition blew me off my seat when He played with Jeff Healy, Stevie Ray Vaughn at the now called Rogers Centre. The fans that had the pleasure to see him at Ronny Scotts are probably still shaking their heads on how he played the strat with slide and whammy harmonics, simultaneously. He will sustain a bend; climaxing in a flurry riff that you would have to play it back slowly to figure out what he was playing.

He has evolved in uncharted territory. He plays with raw, controlled emotion and mastery of his instrument. He can play so soulful (Definitely Maybe - Jeff Beck Group70's), he can make the Strat cry. He once quoted that a lot of good music comes by accident and rarely repeats his riffs, unless they are patented JB riffs. He builds a sculpture, then breaks the mold. He always comes up with something new, keeping you on edge until he pulls it out unexpectedly, like he did with "People Get Ready". He is one of England's National Treasures and I am a very happy man to be a witness to the journey he has taken.

Well to start with, the show for Jeff Beck was very disappointing. Most of his songs were just screaming distorted sounds that sounded the same throughout the entire performance. We mainly purchased tickets to see him on stage with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, who was not on his show! Instead he had a mediocre bass player who did nothing to add to the songs played. Tal makes Jeff play more melodic with feeling. Even on his ballad song "Cause We Ended As Lovers" had no bass solo, a staple part for Tal in which she steals the song from Jeff.

To make the show even worse than it could ever be, guitarist Buddy Guy performed right after Jeff Beck and all you heard was him saying the "F Bomb" word all night long, so disrespectful to the audience & minors that were present. If Buddy thinks by laying his guitar down while beating it with a towel while it feedsback, he should record himself & see how immature if really is, that's not music, nor beating the guitar strings with a bow. I've seen him 2xs before, and each time he has been intoxicated on stage. The worse was when he put his guitar up in the ceiling rafter while it was

feeding back & he couldn't get it down!! The entire show sucked.

Perhaps one of Britain's most celebrated musicians, guitarist Jeff Beck had the coveted opportunity to play alongside The Yardbirds as well as other iconic performers Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Now performing solo at the grand age of 70, the guitarist has not lost any of his abilities or stage presence.

An eccentric through and through, Beck was born to be onstage and you can understand why he refuses to take early retirement as you listen to the deafening cheers as he steps proudly out to his adoring crowd. Playing a bold cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' he easily demonstrates his masterful abilities and this level of expertise continues throughout the evening. His accompanying musicians are talented within their own rights, but the whole attention is well and truly on Jeff and his guitar. The complexity of 'Big Block' evokes mass cheers from the crowd and as he exits the stage they are left under the impression that Beck will not be hanging up the strings and plectrum anytime soon.

I was glad an excited to see this venue, for two of the finest, at Denver's premier stages outside this summer. Buddy Guy landed his licks, among the crowd when he walked round expressing the sources of bluesdom mixed with rock. His performance was outstanding, loved his Blues, totally.

The Jeff Beck Band was more ,of an up to date format ,moving to the next level of his career. At his age, traveling through his past, didn't seem to slow his performance one bit. His band showed their energy and flowed to us in every song played... moved the lyrics into our brains n out of our tearful eyes. The vocalists (times two) showed how to get it right. My gratitude is heart felt, Thanks to both of you, splendidly.

A terrific show on August 7th, 2016. One that will be talked about, reviewed, over all He is a Rock Legend, true to form.

I've been a jeff beck fan since the mid 60's (yes I'm an old burnout).his playing was as crisp and smooth as it was in 1971,when i last saw him live.his play list was a good representation of his work for the last several years with just enough of his early tunes thrown in to please us older fans.i would strongly recommend younger folks to go and see beck play.remember he came onto the British rock/blues scene with guitarists eric clapton, jimmy page and peter green.

The crowd was of mixed age with plenty of young folks there to check this guy out.from what i saw there were no concert antics like the 70's.my take on this show was time and money well spent. The venue daily's place ampatheatre was a pleasant surprise.thanks songkick i sure could have used you back in the day.you now have a customer for life, great experience.

This was a first class concert. I had not seen Jeff live before but was extremely impressed with the whole package, his playing, the band and the material they played. I was really impressed with the two young girls who were outstanding and the drummer was incredible. I would like to know if the drummer was Simon Phillips who played with him some years back and is, of that standard. All in all a great concert. The band was so surprised to be asked to do an encore that they had not planned for one and took a few minutes to agree on what to play. if he tours again in this country I would go back and see him again.

Great show overall - but a bit short at just over 90 minutes (including an encore). Front of house mix was a bit hit and miss for first 15-20 mins (drums and bass a bit overpowering) but settled down when the male vocalist - who was outstanding- came on. Backing musicians were outstanding and Jeff was in good form with Big Block, Superstition, A Day in the Life and Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers stand outs.

Jeff lets his guitar do the talking but the show would benefit from a few more words from Jeff - he was even quieter than usual but the singer was excellent and helped communication with the audience.

I'm from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, my name is Casimiro Monge...yesterday after 30 or more years wanting to see and listen live this genius of electric guitar, i made it ! something memorable for me, a form of happiness that transcends me, his passion, his taste, his technique, his everything is really great ... for me the least predesible...you do not know what note interpret...today I can say, I will die happy !! Excellent show, great set list, although I would have liked to interpret Blue Wind of his album Wired.

Long live to Jeff Beck!!!

Jeff Beck has 5 decades of music, on Saturday night he played for only 70 minutes. 25 of those minutes we were forced to listen to Johnny Depp sing. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. Compare this concert to Santana a month ago. Santana played for 3.5 hours, tickets were only $35 and when the tickets arrived included was a copy of his latest CD. That was a concert to remember.

Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.

Over the course of his distinguished 50-plus-year music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards , been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice — once as a member of THE YARDBIRDS and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as THE YARDBIRDS ' lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form THE JEFF BECK GROUP , which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums — "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) — would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

The constantly evolving Beck 's next move — a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice , which released "Beck, Bogert And Appice" (1973),once again shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like.

1985's "Flash" kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy for the song "Escape" . A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck 's "Guitar Shop" with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas , and a third for "Dirty Mind" from the "You Had It Coming" album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling "Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott's" , which earned a Grammy for "A Day In The Life" .

Beck 's astonishing 2010 solo album, "Emotion & Commotion" , brought about two additional Grammy Awards ; Beck was nominated in five categories before bringing home three: "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for "Hammerhead" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Nessun Dorma" , both from "Emotion & Commotion" , and "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for "Imagine" , his collaboration with Herbie Hancock .

His "Rock 'N' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul)" album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". In 2016 he released "Loud Hailer" and in 2017 "Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl" was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

Jeff Beck Announces Massive U.S. Tour, Ann Wilson and ZZ Top to Support

by Jacob Uitti August 19, 2022, 8:40 am

Legendary blues-rock guitarist Jeff Beck has announced an upcoming U.S. tour, which will include support from other big names like Ann Wilson (of Heart) and ZZ Top.

Videos by American Songwriter

The string of 27 dates, which kicks off on September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Del Valle, Texas, follows the release of Beck’s new album, 18 , with actor-musician Johnny Depp.

The Depp-Beck album gave Beck his first top-10 record on the Billboard chart.

The first six shows of Beck’s tour will include support from ZZ Top and upcoming shows in Texas, Tennessee and Alabama will include Wilson.

Reportedly, on tour, Beck will largely focus on the songs from 18 , though he will surely dip into older material, as well. And speculation abounds whether or not Depp will join his musical collaborator on any of the dates. He has recently joined Beck on stage for several shows, including one in the U.K. city of Sheffield.

Beck is also a collaborator on the new Ozzy Osbourne album, Patient Number 9 . Check out the full list of Beck’s tour dates below.

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 US Tour

Jeff Beck has announced a fall U.S. tour in support of 18 , his new collaborative album with Johnny Depp . The trek begins on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas, and runs through Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., with more shows to be announced later.

Beck will be joined by Ann Wilson on the first three dates and ZZ Top on the first six dates.

Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday. You can see the full list of tour dates below.

Beck and Depp were recently accused of stealing the lyrics to their new song "Sad Motherfuckin' Parade" from "Hobo Ben," an old toast — or form of Black folk poetry — delivered by the late Slim Wilson and preserved in Bruce Jackson's 1974 book  Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me and a 1976 album of the same name.

A spokesperson for the 18  album team told UCR, "We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song 'Sad Motherfuckin' Parade' on the 18 album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album."

Beck also recently contributed a solo to Ozzy Osbourne's " Patient Number 9 ," the title track and lead single off the Prince of Darkness'  new album , which comes out on Sept. 9.

Jeff Beck announces fall 2022 US tour

Dates run Sept-Nov

Jeff Beck will tour the US this fall in support of the newly released, highly anticipated musical collaboration with Johnny Depp, 18 . The tour will kick off on September 23rd in Del Valle, TX where Beck will share the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. Beck will then continue on for his headline dates in Atlanta on October 1st continuing up the east coast hitting DC, Boston and the New York area before heading west with several midwest stops before heading to the west coast. Currently, the tour will wind up in Reno, NV on November 12th.

Pre-sales begin Tuesday, August 16th at 10 am local time with public on sale Friday, August 19th via Ticketmaster . VIP packages will also be available.

The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include Beck’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith, drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson.

Beck and Depp’s 13-track album, 18 , debuted at No. 10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart. The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30th. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25th in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France – including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.

Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.

Got my tickets before learning that Depp would likely be along and that material might make up half the show. I love Jeff Beck and like Depp in a few movies. But I have no use for celebrities who are questionable musicians /wannabe rockstars. Will likely still go. Beck won’t be touring forever. On the bright side-nice that these tickets were reasonably priced compared to others in 2022.

"Every single note he played could kill me with its beauty": Celebrating the life of a man regularly described by his peers as the greatest guitarist of them all, Jeff Beck

A look back on the life, times and truly extraordinary music of the The Guv’nor

Jeff Beck holding a guitar (studio portrait)

It wasn’t the number of records or concert tickets that he sold, and it certainly wasn’t his rock-god image that defined Jeff Beck – although he was plentifully endowed in all these departments. Rather, it was the unique depth and durability of his artistry that elevated him to the status of perhaps the best electric guitarist the world has ever known – and certainly the best over the distance.

Rather like Pelé or Michael Jordan or Roger Federer, Beck transcended statistical measures of greatness, to arrive at a state of grace where it was his peers who most enthusiastically acknowledged his supreme skill. David Gilmour called him “the most consistently brilliant guitarist”. Brian May declared himself to be “absolutely in awe of him”. And, as Steve Lukather put it, “No one will ever come close [to Beck]. One note is all he had to play and it was game over.”

“You’d listen to Jeff along the way and you’d say: ‘Wow, he’s getting really good,’” recalled Jimmy Page , when he was inducting Beck into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (for the second time) as a solo artist in 2009. “Then you’d listen to him a few years later and he’d just keep getting better and better and better. And he still has, all the way through. He leaves us mere mortals just wondering.”

Given his generally robust condition and enduring presence among the classic rock greats, Jeff Beck’s sudden and unexpected death in 2023, from bacterial meningitis at the age of 78, cast a long shadow over the rock world and threw a new light on a career of sometimes explosive and always surpassing excellence. He had just finished one of his more industrious years, undertaking a lengthy stretch of dates in the UK, Europe and North America throughout 2022, promoting what turned out to be his final studio album, 18, released in July the same year.

The album was recorded with Johnny Depp , who joined him on tour – a collaboration that certainly underlined Beck’s continued willingness to offer unexpected challenges to his audience. He also performed a run of shows with ZZ Top and singer Ann Wilson which elicited more traditionally outstanding performances from all concerned. Check out the footage of Beck performing Rough Boy with ZZ Top, and marvel at how he converts a southern rock ballad into music of the spheres.

Thanks to his pioneering work in the 1960s with The Yardbirds and his own group, Beck was anointed alongside Page and Eric Clapton as one of the ‘Holy Trinity’ of English guitarists – all three of whom had passed through the The Yardbirds. But while Clapton subsequently retreated from his role as a virtuoso steeped in the blues tradition, and Page channelled the overwhelming majority of his energies into driving the Led Zeppelin juggernaut (which ground to a halt after the death of their drummer John Bonham in 1980), Beck never stopped his quest for mastery over all aspects of his instrument and new avenues for expressing himself on it.

Beck was a guitarist in the purest sense. He was not a singer (apart from his reluctant vocal performance on his 1967 hit single Hi Ho Silver Lining , and one or two tracks tucked away on his solo albums). And although he scooped up a few songwriting credits here and there – particularly on the Jeff Beck Group album Rough And Ready (1971) and his 2016 studio album Loud Hailer – he was not a lyricist and never really a songwriter per se.

His guitar was his voice and means of expression. His core creative mission was to attend in infinite detail to the touch, the sound and the playing of his instrument to ever greater degrees of excellence. You could describe the process as a lifelong spiritual quest or calling that he pursued, while leaving “mere mortals”, as Page put it, to wonder how he had done it.

Alt

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born and grew up in Wallington, Surrey, where as a teenager he learned to play on a borrowed guitar. His primary influences were American blues guitarists such as Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. Once he had got hold of an electric guitar, he started off with a brief stint in Screaming Lord Sutch And The Savages before joining local R&B group The Tridents.

His big break came when his 21-year-old friend Jimmy Page – who was already making a name for himself as a session musician – recommended Beck as the replacement for Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds in 1965, just as the band embarked on a string of trans-Atlantic hits starting with For Your Love .

Although he was a key figure in the British blues boom, Beck took an early exit from what Carlos Santana called “the BB King highway”. Beck’s first single with The Yardbirds, Heart Full Of Soul , was notable for the Indian-influenced bends in the guitar hook which he provided (which was originally written to be played on a sitar).

His solo on The Yardbirds’ 1966 hit Shapes Of Things was a further harbinger of the incredibly imaginative and revolutionary dimension he brought to his instrument. Inspired by the sitar sounds that The Beatles had recently introduced to the pop world, on Shapes Of Things Beck took off on a crazy, raga-type exposition, full of odd bends, “micro-sitar sounds” and atonal squalls of feedback that was unlike anything that had come before.

Pete Townshend had introduced the idea of harnessing the extraneous noises that could be coaxed from an overdriven guitar amp, on The Who ’s single Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere , released in 1965. But it was Beck’s sortie on Shapes Of Things and the B-side, Mister You’re A Better Man Than I , that brought the idea into focus and put down a clear marker for what could – and soon would – be accomplished, at least six months before the unknown Jimi Hendrix arrived to play his first gigs in London.

Hendrix himself was an early subscriber to the Jeff Beck appreciation society. “Hendrix was fascinated by Jeff Beck’s playing,” recalled ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons , who toured with Hendrix in 1968. “He would put on one of his records and say to me: ‘Man, how do you think Jeff Beck is doing this?’”

It wasn’t just his groundbreaking technique that marked Beck out. A quiet and often reserved character off stage, he liked a drink but had little interest in drugs. “I didn’t like the idea of losing who I was. I had to stay sane. I watched everyone else fall down and it was so boring. Every night it was: ‘Who’s got the stuff?’” But he nevertheless brought a ton of attitude to the gig.

His status as a figurehead of the Swinging Sixties was underlined emphatically by his role in the film 1966 Blow Up , directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, in which The Yardbirds were featured playing on a set that was a replica of the Ricky-Tick club in Windsor. Beck was required to smash his guitar to pieces during Stroll On – an adaptation of the old rockabilly song The Train Kept A-Rollin’ . He understandably refused to destroy his own guitar, a 1954 Gibson Les Paul .

“So they got Hofner to bring down these shitty guitars,” Beck later recalled. “I had this tea chest of twenty-five-pound joke guitars, and I went right through them with this Hofner rep watching at the side. He thought it was all great fun.”

According to The Yardbirds’ manager, Simon Napier-Bell, the experience of making the film gave Beck a taste for smashing up equipment on stage during the group’s ensuing US tour. “Gig after gig, he tottered round the stage, ramming the neck of his guitar through the speakers and crashing his feet into the delicate electrical controls. I was left a prisoner in my suite at the Chicago Hilton, phoning round America trying to find the location of every Marshall amp in the country and chartering planes to fly them to the next evening’s gig, only to be destroyed by another night’s bad-tempered Beck-ing.”

No doubt there was an element of exaggeration in Napier-Bell’s account. But maybe not that much. “Those amps never worked,” Beck later recalled. “I threw this amp out of the window once. It was in Phoenix or Tucson. The air-conditioning had broken. It was a hundred and forty degrees, unbearable heat, and the amp was crackling and then the heat just blew it up. It was a Vox, I think, and I just tossed the whole thing out the window. The power amp had a fixed cannon socket, so it wouldn’t pull out, and it was only that which prevented it from hitting this passer-by underneath. The amp was swinging above his head. God, we were tearaways.”

Beck left The Yardbirds midway through a US tour in 1966, pleading “inflamed brain, inflamed tonsils and an inflamed cock”, and soon embarked on a solo career.

After an unlikely string of hit singles, including Tallyman, Love Is Blue and the strangely unsinkable Hi Ho Silver Lining all masterminded by producer and pop Svengali Mickie Most, he formed his own group with Rod Stewart (vocals), Ronnie Wood (bass) and Mickey Waller (drums).

The debut album with this lineup, Truth (credited simply to Jeff Beck), released in August 1968, paved the way for the invention of the heavy rock genre, with tracks including You Shook Me, Rock My Plimsoul and Let Me Love You providing a virtual blueprint for the first Led Zeppelin album.

Such were the similarities in approach, Beck felt that with Zeppelin his old friend Page had borrowed over-freely from his stock of ideas. He vividly recalled the mixture of emotions he felt on hearing the first Led Zeppelin album, released the following year: “I was stunned, shocked, annoyed, flattered and just a bit miffed by the whole thing. But they had the lead singer that was going for the kill. But Rod… Maybe if I’d handled myself a bit better, kept Rod on the rails a bit. But things just happen. Every day is like a year back then, you don’t have much long-term view of things. You just fight for tomorrow all the time.”

After follow-up album Beck-Ola (1969), the Jeff Beck Group (Mk.1) disbanded with typically maladroit timing just before they were due to play at the Woodstock festival. Looking back in more recent times, Beck took a philosophical view. “I have to be grateful that I didn’t succeed, because you’re then lashed to the whipping post. I wouldn’t swap places with Jimmy [Page]. As much as I’d have loved to have been in Led Zeppelin and enjoyed all those amazing shows, in hindsight I’m much better off being a scout, going out in the field. That’s what I see myself as.

"Ironically, Page had an album called Outrider – and I was the outrider! I never, ever envisaged having massive success. And I’m glad I didn’t, otherwise people would be pointing at me in the street."

Beck put together a new line-up and recorded two interim albums with the Jeff Beck Group (Mk.2), the line-up being notable for the inclusion of keyboard player Max Middleton alongside Cozy Powell (drums), Clive Chaman (bass) and Bobby Tench (vocals/guitar). He also convened the short-lived supergroup Beck, Bogert & Appice (with the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist/vocalist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice) who released one self-titled studio album in 1973.

While the musicianship on these recordings was always of the highest order, there was the nagging sense of a supreme talent being employed in the service of less than stellar material. Then in 1975 Beck, together with Middleton, joined forces with George Martin , producer of The Beatles , and recorded Blow By Blow , an instrumental jazz/fusion album that set him apart from his superstar peers and pointed him on the path that would lead to the ultimate blooming of his artistry.

Fondly remembered for Beck’s spine-tingling interpretations of Stevie Wonder’s songs Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers and Thelonius – along with the Middleton composition Freeway Jam which quickly became one of Beck’s most reliable calling cards, Blow By Blow became his most successful album, reaching No.4 in the US and selling a million copies.

“That album was really a turning point,” Beck later recalled. “It gave me wings I never thought I had. It opened up the doors. It was red carpet, you know. Following it was difficult.” But follow it he did, with the equally remarkable and refined Wired (1976), again produced by George Martin, which marked the start of a liaison with keyboard player Jan Hammer along with Middleton (keyboards) and drummer Narada Michael Walden. Among the high points were the infectiously funky Come Dancing (written by Walden), an eerie Hammer composition Blue Wind , and a stunning version of the Charles Mingus standard Goodbye Pork Pie Hat given the full-screen Beck treatment.

“George Martin was probably the best producer I’ve had – the guy who could framework what I do without interfering,” Beck said, looking back on that period.

Beck concluded a trilogy of jazz fusion albums with There And Back , released in 1980, which remains one of his most underrated albums. With both Jan Hammer and Tony Hymas on keyboards, Mo Foster on bass and the superhuman Simon Phillips on drums, Beck took an uber-technical yet super-catchy melodic format to its outer limits.

The opening track, Star Cycle , a typically taut and edgy rumble written by Hammer, became the theme music for the zeitgeist-defining UK music TV show The Tube , while the supercharged, double-bass-drum-driven Space Boogie (written by Hymas and Phillips) took the virtuoso prowess of trailblazers like the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham into a thrilling new, accessible dimension.

Beck became something of a recluse – by rock star standards – during the 1980s and 1990s. While Clapton, Page and many of his other contemporaries were bestriding the stages in London and Philadelphia during Live Aid in 1986, Beck was content to follow events on a TV in the corner while he worked on one of his vintage hot rods in the garage of his estate near Tunbridge Wells.

“I didn’t want to go, because I hate large crowds,” he said afterwards. “I don’t mind playing to them, as long as you can get away quickly afterwards. But I wouldn’t have fitted in there anyway.”

Beck freely admitted at the time that his 1985 album Flash was recorded in response to record company pleas for “something we can sell”. Nile Rodgers was brought in as someone with a commercial ear to help with the production, and Beck was even persuaded to sing on a couple of tracks. The album was memorable for a reunion with Rod Stewart, who sang a heartfelt version of Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready , and for the track Escape , written by Jan Hammer, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. But regardless of the accolades, Beck’s heart didn’t seem altogether to be in it.

It was around this time Beck started to become known as an elite gun-for-hire, a role that he was happy to embrace but never took too seriously.

He contributed to Tina Turner ’s breakthrough album Private Dancer (1984). “I played a pink Jackson guitar, and she sang Private Dancer once and Steel Claw once and that was it.” He worked on two of Mick Jagger’s solo albums, but dropped out of the band that Jagger was putting together to tour in Australia and Japan because “I didn’t want to play a load of Keith Richards licks”. He performed a supercharged slide solo on Jon Bon Jovi’s debut solo single Blaze Of Glory , a US No.1 hit in 1990. And he contributed to Roger Waters ’ album Amused To Death (1992).

“I didn’t know what the hell the album was about,” Beck said. “[Waters] did explain it to me, but I wasn’t really listening. We just blazed away for about fifteen minutes, had a cup of coffee and went home. Forgot all about it. Next thing, it wound up as the lead track on the album.”

Beck’s blithe demeanour and seemingly offhand approach belied a steely determination to excel at everything he did, while never taking the accolades that were routinely heaped on him and his work too seriously. He was a connoisseur of musical styles and sounds, so much so that it seemed nothing was beyond his reach. Crazy Legs , an album he recorded in 1993 with the Big Town Playboys, was a spectacularly authentic homage to the guitarist Cliff Gallup who played with Gene Vincent on his first two albums, Bluejean Bop! (1956) and Gene Vincent And The Blue Caps (1957).

“Cliff Gallup’s guitar playing was absolutely phenomenal,” Beck said at the time. “His solos are so packed with dynamite on the wild numbers, and yet they’re full of knowledge and fluidity, melodic as hell.”

Beck’s command of the old-school finger-picking, rockabilly style employed by Gallup set him apart from the other rock guitar heroes of his – or indeed any – generation. As he continued to move through genres – from jazz rock to the more experimental sounds of electronica and 21st-century production methods – he never stopped improving, refining and exploring a playing style that gradually became little short of supernatural.

He continued to maintain a practising regime of anything between four and 10 hours daily. And somewhere along the line he ditched his plectrum completely and developed a way of micromanaging the pitch and tone of his Stratocaster by wrapping his fingers round the whammy bar while picking with his thumb. The technique gave him an uncanny ability to sculpt the shape and sound of the notes he was playing in an extraordinary style aptly summed up by guitarist Steve Lukather’s observation: “One note… and it was game over.”

By the time he reached the new millennium, Beck could acquit himself with distinction in virtually any musical environment. He was an incredible slide guitarist, as evidenced by his astonishing performance of the Nitin Sawhney composition Nadia captured on Beck’s album You Had It Coming (2000), in which he returned to his instrumental brief and extended it to encompass the realms of electronica, drum & bass, you name it.

He regularly got some of the finest musicians in the world to play in his bands. His live album with the Jan Hammer Group (1977) was an early landmark, while the trio comprising Tony Hymas (keyboards/bass) and Terry Bozzio (drums) with whom he toured and recorded the 1989 album Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop were like ninja warriors.

But it was a run of dates at London club Ronnie Scott’s in 2007 that found him close to the absolute peak of his powers with one of the greatest and most sympatico line-ups he ever assembled: Jason Rebello (keyboards), Tal Wilkenfeld (bass) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). The sound and atmosphere in the venue on those nights was like nothing else – especially when Colaiuta and Beck sparred on the Billy Cobham tune Spectrum and the double-bass drum roller-coaster ride of Space Boogie . Beck’s wondrous interpretation of the Lennon/McCartney song A Day In The Life captured on the resulting album Live At Ronnie Scott’s (2008) won him yet another Grammy for Best Instrumental Rock Performance.

Beck’s 2010 album Emotion And Commotion (which netted him two more Grammys) found him stretching out in more unexpected directions (neo-classical, orchestral, soul) in the company of various singers including Joss Stone and Imelda May. Soon after it was released, May joined him at a special concert at the Iridium, New York in honour of guitar legend Les Paul. One of the songs they performed that night, a version of Remember (Walking In The Sand) , a sixties hit by the ShangriLas, was a performance beyond compare.

“He inspired, supported and encouraged me with every whoop, cheer, gasp and tear when I sang with him,” May wrote on social media soon after the news of Beck’s death broke. “He was the genius in the room yet he made everyone else around him feel special. He was dedicated to making pure art. Every single note he played could kill me with its beauty. His light was so blindingly bright it already feels dark without him. The greatest guitarist that ever lived. The finest friend you could wish for. Thank you Jeff Beck.”

His old bandmate Ronnie Wood expressed similar sentiments: “Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him. I’m sending much sympathy to [his widow] Sandra, his family, and all who loved him. I want to thank him for all our early days together in the Jeff Beck Group, conquering America for the first time. Musically we were breaking all the rules, it was fantastic, groundbreaking rock’n’roll! Listen to the incredible track Plynth in his honour. Jeff, I will always love you. God bless.”

“Jeff you were the greatest, my man,” Rod Stewart said. “Thank you for everything.”

JEFF BECK will tour the U.S. this fall in support of the newly released, highly anticipated musical collaboration with Johnny Depp , 18. The tour will kick off on September 23 in Del Valle, TX where Beck will share the bill for the first six shows with longtime musical friends, ZZ Top. BECK will then continue on for his headline dates in Atlanta on October 1 continuing up the east coast hitting DC, Boston and the New York area before heading west with several mid-west stops before heading to the west coast. Currently, the tour will wind up in Reno, NV on November 12 th .

Pre-sale tickets will be available on tomorrow, Tuesday August 16 at 10am local time (password: beck18) with public on sale Friday, August 19.   VIP packages also available here. Full itinerary is below with all dates subject to change and more dates to be announced.

The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith , drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson .

BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18 , debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.  The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France – including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016.

Jeff Beck Plots Short Fall U.S. Tour Around Clapton, Rod Stewart Gigs

  • By Kory Grow

Jeff Beck has planned a short U.S. tour around his appearance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads festival this September. The tour will end with a special gig the guitarist has planned at the Hollywood Bowl where he will reunite with his former Jeff Beck Group singer Rod Stewart . He’s billing it as his and Stewart’s “most in-depth concert in over 35 years.”

For the rest of the tour, which kicks of in Kansas City, MO on September 17th, Beck will be accompanied by drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Rhonda Smith vocalist Jimmy Hall and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith. Tickets for the shows will go on sale this coming Friday, June 21st, with the exception of the Phoenix date, which goes on sale June 24th.

Beck first rose to prominence in 1965 when he replaced Clapton in the Yardbirds. He parted ways with the group soon after and formed the Jeff Beck Group in 1967 with Stewart on vocals and current Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood on bass, among other members.

In an in-depth interview with Rolling Stone last year, Beck reflected on when he finally met Clapton — well after the two of them were both out of the Yardbirds. He said that even though Clapton has admitted to feeling some rivalry toward him, he didn’t feel the same. “I just thought he’s got the blues covered,” Beck said. “And he’s also got some very good pop songs. And I don’t have either, really. I’m not committed to putting myself up for a blues guitarist, even though I love playing the blues.”

He also discussed why he broke up the Jeff Beck Group at a time when they seemed to be on the precipice of fame. The band had been booked to play Woodstock, but Beck canceled the gig. “We just hadn’t played in front of large audiences,” he said. “We’d done the Fillmore West, which was a joyous thing, except for the part where everybody started to sniff the smoke in the air, which would make you stoned. But somewhere along the line, when the second tour came along and we were offered to play at Woodstock, I thought there was a bad vibe in the band. It was sort of Ronnie Wood and Rod and that’s it. And I wasn’t anywhere in the picture. They’d go off, and I’d be stuck.”

Beck later buried the hatchet with Stewart, appearing as a special guest at one of Stewart’s gigs in 1984. Stewart also joined Beck at a 2009 concert to sing “People Get Ready.”

Jeff Beck Tribute Concert Led By Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart

Gary Clark Jr., Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Nathan East during “People Get Ready” during A Tribute to Jeff Beck at London’s Royal Albert Hall, May 22, 2023

Jeff Beck was honored on Monday (May 22, 2023) by many of his musical peers and acolytes at the first of two tribute concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The pair of shows were announced on March 10 by his wife, Sandra Beck, and Eric Clapton, to honor the memory and artistry of the trailblazing rock guitarist who died on Jan. 10 at age 78 after a sudden illness. The first of two shows featured significant wattage in its all-star lineup with Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Billy Gibbons, and Johnny Depp—who toured with Beck in 2022 during the legend’s final tour—among the many artists joining Clapton. Tickets for the shows quickly sold-out.

The first thing the audience saw was Beck’s guitar on a pedestal on stage, under a spotlight. While other touches were far more subtle—Depp, for instance, wore a Beck bracelet on his left arm—others were there for all to see: Clapton and Stewart hugged when they performed “People Get Ready” towards the emotional evening’s end.

The career-spanning concert featured a broad assortment of songs associated with the guitar legend. Early on were a pair of Yardbirds hits, “Shapes of Things” (with Clapton singing lead) and “Heart Full of Soul.” Clapton then welcomed Derek Trucks, and soon thereafter, Susan Tedeschi to the stage.

Other career-spanning repertoire included “Freeway Jam,” so closely associated with Beck ‘s 1977 live album with the Jan Hammer Group. Beck was a frequent touring partner of ZZ Top. On this night, the band’s Billy Gibbons performed “Rough Boy,” which they had played together many times.

Irish singer Imelda May joined the lineup, which now included Johnny Depp, to sing “Remember (Walking in the Sand),” a song popularized by the Shangri-Las in 1964. She and Beck had performed it many times.

John McLaughlin, 81 years old, who led the jazz fusion band, Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a song that Beck often played: “You Know You Know” from the band’s 1971 debut.

When Beck passed, his peers shared their grief, many describing him as their “hero” and “inspiration.” “You were the greatest, my man,” wrote Stewart, when Beck passed. During Rod’s set at the May 22 tribute concert, he said, “I never thought I’d be here playing a concert in tribute to my dear old pal, Jeff Beck.” He kicked off his mini-set with “Infatuation,” his 1984 hit that featured Beck on guitar. Here, he was joined by Clapton and Wood, with Slowhand taking Beck’s solo.

After introducing Gary Clark Jr., Stewart joked, “I’ve never seen so many guitars in my life!” He then introduced “the greatest civil rights song ever written,” as the band began the unmistakable introduction to “People Get Ready,” the 1965 song by the Impressions that Beck and Stewart recorded in 1985. During Clark Jr.’s solo, Clapton and Stewart hugged, earning more crowd applause.

Clapton then sang “Going Down,” recorded by the Jeff Beck Group in 1972, as the evening’s finale.

Other performers included Doyle Bramhall, Robert Randolph, Olivia Safe, Joss Stone, and from the Jeff Beck Band, Rhonda Smith, Anika Nilles and Robert Stevenson. Surplus income from the concerts will be donated to the Folly Wildlife Rescue based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Thanks to Matt Lee and Albrecht Peltzer for the videos.

“One of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him,” said Wood when Beck passed.

Tributes For Allman Brothers Band Legend Dickey Betts

I Personally knew Jeff Beck. We met in 1977. Jeff was a friend who helped guide me. He knew I was in love with music, so he tryed me out. I was 18. I used to sit with him working on songs he was trying to write. He was a perfectionist. He worked on my look, had photos taken of me, and put me in things to give me the experience. I used to assist him at home, reading him his fan mail. He was trying to get his Band The Jeff Beck Group back together. He was an inspiration. And love to try new things, experiment. He even wanted to send me to school to study music. I shared many moments with Jeff. I walked around the Hollywood Bowl with him one time, sitting on the Benches looking up at the Stage, as he dreamed of one day getting to play there. I am so glad this dream came true, as 40 years later, I would be back to see him play there many times. I was at one of the last concerts he did at the Orpheum Theatre here in LA. I will never forget this. He loved his fans.

  • Has Influenced

Jeff Beck isn't your typical guitar legend. His goal, in fact, is to make you forget that he plays guitar.

"I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound," says Beck."Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off. I love it when people hear my music but can't figure out what instrument I'm playing. What a cool compliment."

Beck burst onto the music scene in 1966 after joining the Yardbirds. Although his stint with the band lasted only 18 months, Beck played on almost all of the group's hits. More importantly, Beck's innovative style heard on classics like "Heart Full of Soul" and "Shapes of Things" helped influence the psychedelic sound of the "60s.

At the height of the Yardbirds' popularity in 1967, Beck left the group and embarked upon unpredictable journey of musical discovery that has lasted nearly four-decades as an Epic recording artist. During that time, Beck has left his distinctive mark on hard rock, jazz-fusion and modern music history.

While many of his contemporaries are satisfied with musical inertia, Beck continues to add to his legacy as an innovator with the release of his 14th album, simply titled "Jeff ." Produced by Andy Wright (Simply Red, Eurythmics) and mixed by Mike Barbiero (Blues Traveler, Metallica), the 13 songs on "Jeff " reflect how Beck's fascination with electronic music continues to evolve.

"On my last album, "Who Else!," I spent a lot of time in the studio with Andy Wright just toying around with different sounds. We had a great time, but I bogged down in the possibilities," says Beck, who earned a Grammy for instrumental performance for the song "Dirty Mind " from that album."When I went back to the studio for "Jeff," I didn't want to get bogged down again so I brought in a few people to help push us along."

Although they only met when the album was almost finished, Beck says David Torn of the New York trip-hop group Splattercell became an important collaborator. Much to Beck's delight, Torn gutted an early version of the song,"Plan B. "Dave ripped the vocals out straight away and made my guitar line the song's main hook. That's what I should have done in the first place, but it takes a remix guy to come along and put a different spin on what you're doing," he says."The instant I heard Dave's album with Splattercell, I wanted him to dismember one of my songs, and he came through beautifully."

While working on the album at Metropolis Studio, Beck met Liverpudlian electronic trio Apollo 440 "programmers Howard Gray, his brother Trevor and guitarist Noko Fisher- Jones. Before long, Beck had recorded three songs using the group's rhythms.

"When we first met, they wrote me one of those amazing "nail your head to the wall " kinds of grooves that they're famous for and I ate it up," says Beck. "I played off that track for two hours and wound up writing "Grease Monkey" around their groove."

Finding inspiration in a unique rhythm track is how songs like "Dirty Mind " from "Who Else!" and "Psycho Sam" from "Who Else!" were written, says Beck."I play guitar, but that's rarely my starting point," he explains."The drums have to kick me in the ass and make me want to play or I'll just sit there all day. Sure, I can write a song on guitar and then try to add drums in later, but it never sounds quite right. For me, a good song has to begin with an inspiring rhythm."

Another Apollo 440 rhythm track provided the spark for "Hot Rod Honeymoon," which juxtaposes a raging club beat against 60s surf-pop harmonies and blues slide guitar. The unexpected contrast gives the song a fresh edge."If I used a shuffle on this song, which is the kind of beat you would expect to hear, it would have killed the song instantly," explains Beck."Instead, the Apollo guys and I came up with a tongue-in-cheek Beach Boys song complete with techno- drums and screaming guitar, which I think sounds more interesting."

With its haunting melody anchored by Beck's violin-like tone and a 40-piece orchestra, "Bulgarian" a traditional folk song arranged by Beck and Wright "is one of the guitarist's most majestic songs. At the other end of the spectrum is the album's wildest ride, "Trouble Man." Beck starts out by coaxing numb-tongue mumbles from his Fender Stratocaster before launching into a mercurial solo that soars, spirals out of control and crashes into a pulsating heap of noise that sounds like an overdriven modem. The song, like much of Beck's work, creates an atmosphere of violent elegance by pitting the raw emotions of the heart against the calculated technique of the mind.

A rare breed of guitarist like Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix, Beck is not only compelling for what he plays, but for how he plays it. While some guitar players use racks of gear to create sound, Beck prefers a simple, natural approach that emphasizes manual dexterity over gadgets. As Eric Clapton once said, "With Jeff, it's all in his hands."

Like few guitarists before him, Beck plays the entire guitar. Using his fingers instead of a guitar pick for greater speed and control over the fretboard, Beck adds deft twists of the volume and tone knobs to shape the notes as he's playing them and further bends sounds into a rubbery tangle with his controlled cruelty on the whammy bar. "I play the way I do because it allows me to come up with the sickest sounds possible. That's the point now isn't it " says Beck with a wicked grin."I don't care about the rules. In fact, if I don't break the rules at least 10 times in every song then I'm not doing my job properly."

ELECTRONIC ROOTS

Beck started his career by exploring the heavier side of rock before switching gears in 1975 with the groundbreaking instrumental jazz-fusion albums,"Blow By Blow" and "Wired."

Produced by Sir George Martin, famed producer of The Beatles, the two albums shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like. By fusing the complexity of progressive rock and improvisatory freedom of jazz with intergalactic guitar tones and a sense of humor, Beck opened up the horizon for future guitar instrumentalists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

In the wake of those two albums, Beck became increasingly interested in the possibilities of electronic music thanks to his collaborations with former Mahavishnu Orchestra keyboardist, Jan Hammer. On stage, Hammer's legendary mastery of the Mini-Moog synthesizer imbued Beck classics like "Freeway Jam " and "Blue Wind " with a funky, otherworldly aura that was ahead of its time. Looking back on the tour for "Wired "documented on "Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live " (1978) "Beck says the shows left some in the audience scratching their heads.

"I don't suppose many people knew what the hell was happening on stage," says Beck."I can tell you it was an exciting "electric'time for us as musicians because we were pushing the music in new directions. At the time, I think we were a little out there for most people, but when you look back now "it sounds like we were on to something."

Although their partnership only lasted a few years, Beck says Hammer continues to inspire him to search out and use new sounds in his music."The way Jan used technology really turned my head around and opened up a new world for me," says Beck."He made me realize that things are always changing and you can't sit still. You have to keep your ears wide open to hear what's going on or the music will pass you by."

Born on 24th June 1944, just before the end of World War II, Beck grew up in Wallington, England. His mother's piano playing and the family's radio tuned to everything from dance to classical made sure Beck was surrounded by music from a young age.

"For my parents, who lived through the war, music was a source of comfort to them. Life was tense and music helped them forget about their troubles. I "m sure that made an impression on me," recalls Beck."I was really small when jazz broke through in England and I can still remember sneaking off to the living room to listen to it on the radio "much to my parent's disapproval."

Inspired by the music he heard, it wasn't long before Beck picked up a guitar and began playing around London. He briefly attended Wimbledon's Art College before leaving to devote all of his time to music. Beck worked as a session player, with Screaming Lord Sutch the British equivalent to Screaming Jay Hawkins and the Tridents before he replaced Eric Clapton as the Yardbirds " lead guitarist in 1965.

Beck left the band in 1967 and formed The Jeff Beck Group, which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. The band released two albums "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) that became musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

Stewart and Wood left to join the Faces and Beck disbanded the group until 1971 when he formed a new version of the band and recorded two albums "Rough and Ready " (1971) and "The Jeff Beck Group" (1972). Beck again dissolved the group and formed a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, which released "Beck, Bogert and Appice" (1973).

Veering away from hard rock, Beck created two landmark two jazz-fusion albums "Blow By Blow " (1975) and "Wired " (1976). The all-instrumental albums were a critical and popular success and remain two of the top-selling guitar instrumental albums of all time. The live album,"Jeff Beck with the Jan Hammer Group Live " followed in 1977.

Music may have been one of Beck's earliest passions but it has always shared space with a love of hot rods that began as soon as he could see over the dashboard. After the success "Blow By Blow " and "Wired," Beck began devoting more time to his fleet of hot rods. "I like the studio because it's delicate; you're working for sound. I like the garage because chopping up lumps of steel is the exact opposite of delicate," explains Beck. "The garage is a more dangerous place though. I've never almost been crushed by a guitar, but I can't say the same about one of my Corvettes."

Beck returned in 1980 with "There and Back," but he wouldn't be heard from again until 1985's "Flash," which earned him the Best Rock Instrumental Grammy "his first "for the song "Escape." Beck re-emerged from semi- retirement in 1989 with "Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas ." The album earned him his second Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental. After a co- headlining tour with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Beck gave retirement another try, but it didn't last.

Beck returned to the studio in 1993 backed by the Big Town Playboys to record "Crazy Legs," a tribute to seminal rockabilly artist Gene Vincent and his guitarist Cliff Gallup. Six years passed before the release of "Who Else!" (1999) but the album opened a relative floodgate of music by Beck standards. It only took two years before "You Had It Coming," (2001), which earned Beck his third Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental for the song "Dirty Mind."

To support his latest album "Jeff", Beck returned to the road in the summer of 2003 on a coast-to-coast tour with blues legend B.B. King on the 12th Annual B.B. King Music Festival. The landmark event, presented by VH1 Classic, also featured New Orleans-based progressive funk outfit Galactic and up-and-coming Florida-bred murky blues band Mofro. An official bootleg "Live at B.B. King Blues Club" was recorded in the New York club in September 2003, and released for online retail only at www.jeffbeckmusic.com.

This summer Jeff Beck undertakes his first UK tour since 1990. Fresh from the success of picking up his fourth Grammy award (for "Plan B" from the album "Jeff"), the ground-breaking guitarist promises a set that reflects the eclectic musical mix that is his trademark.

From mixing rock and jazz to produce seminal albums like "Blow By Blow" and "Wired", to incorporating eastern, classical and blues influences, you can expect innovative visits to his extensive back catalogue as well as revealing glimpses of his next project featuring a string section.

Will it be the musician who's recognized as one of only a handful of Brit Invasion guitar gods from the 1960s that includes Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page? Will it be the man who absorbed a gritty blues “message in a bottle" that floated across the ocean from the States to the UK? In the hands of Jeff Beck, a guitar could sing or cry as eloquently as a person, and an unexpected cover might become a fun rock-fusion chestnut with a new paint job. Curtis Mayfield's soul classic turns out to have all kinds of beautiful shades waiting to be drawn out by a solid and clever band (not that Beck played with any other kind). This live take is a surprisingly languid one, but the slow-rolling pace doesn't lessen the bounce ...

The man played like he had a love/hate relationship with his guitar. One moment he could be ever-so-gently coaxing bittersweet strains from the strings and the next he could very well be wringing tortuous sounds from up and down the fretboard, as often as not thanks to his instinctively savvy use of the whammy bar. It was a testament to the unpredictable logic with which he played that such juxtapositions not only made sense, but perfect sense: the progression(s) could ...

Prepare for an amazing afternoon of music, food, fun, and philanthropy as Sunstone Winery hosts the annual One805Live! Concert, presented by the Santa Ynez Board of Chumash Indians on Sunday, May 19.

All proceeds benefit the nonprofit One805 , and all Santa Barbara County first responders funds go toward emergency life-saving equipment, 24/7 accessible mental wellness services for all first responders, and disaster preparedness. One805 CEO Kirsten Cavendish Weston-Smith shared, “Sunstone is so beautiful. We are always sold out, and our first responders so deserve our support.”

Renowned musician Steve Postell and his band, The Night Train Music Club, are slated to headline the event, along with some of the best session and touring musicians in the industry. Postell, founder of The Immediate Family, is a renowned touring and session musician and has worked with David Crosby, John Oates, and Kenny Loggins, among many others.

As of today, the lineup includes Tariqh Akoni, Josh Groban’s music director, who has worked with Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Weezer, LeAnne Rimes, and John Mayer (and was just seen on stage with the Pacific Jazz Orchestra at the Granada’s Centennial celebration); Steve Ferrone, drummer for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Average White Band; Leland Sklar, bassist for The Immediate Family, who has performed with Phil Collins and James Taylor; Russ Irwin, a vocalist who has performed with Aerosmith, Sting, Jeff Beck, and John Fogerty; and, last but not least, Elliot Easton from The Cars. Event organizers hint that there will be additional special guests and “surprises.”

One805Live! takes place from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at Sunstone Winery (125 Refugio Rd., Santa Ynez). To purchase tickets and for additional details, including sponsorship opportunities, transportation options, and special packages, visit one805.org .

Allison Adams Tucker’s 15th annual Women in Jazz concert

Talk about a great deal! Tickets for the most promising San Diego jazz performances of the weekend are absolutely free.

The event in question, multilingual singer Allison Adams Tucker’s 15th annual Women in Jazz concert, is a showcase for some of the area’s most gifted musicians. This year’s edition will team Tucker with pianist Melonie Grinnell, bassist Evona Wascinski, drummer Joannah Sy, percussionist Monette Marino and Los Angeles trumpeter Tatiana Tate.

Their selections will mix original compositions with choice cuts by everyone from John Coltrane (“Giant Steps”), Freddie Hubbard (“Little Sunflower”) and Esperanza Spalding (“I Know You Know”) to Sting (“La Belle Dame Sans Regrets”), Beck (“Tropaclia”) and Sade (“Kiss of Life”).

For the past 12 years, Tucker has presented her annual late-April concert as part of — or in close proximity to — International Jazz Day, which was founded by keyboard legend Herbie Hancock and will this year be held April 30 in more than 100 countries around the world. That international focus is enhanced by her ability to sing equally well in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Japanese.

Tucker, whose latest album is the genre-leaping “Retro Trilogy,” has showcased a new guest artist at nearly all of her previous 14 Women in Jazz concerts.

This year’s guest is Los Angeles trumpeter Tatiana Tate. She is a protege of the late Clora Bryant, a pioneering female jazz trumpeter who music fans here fondly recall for her tenure in San Diego’s internationally acclaimed Jeannie and Jimmy Cheatham & The Sweet Baby Blues Band.

Since admission is free and seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis for Friday night’s two, no-reservations shows, an early arrival is prudent.

8 and 10 p.m. Friday. Lou Lou’s Jungle Club at the Lafayette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Blvd., North Park. Free. Ages 21 and up only. (619) 296-2101, loulousclub.com

Alabama Shakes alum Brittany Howard will make her Humphreys solo debut this weekend.

Brittany Howard, with June McDoom

Since rising to prominence 12 years ago as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in the band Alabama Shakes, Brittany Howard has come into her own as a solo artist.

Her newest album, “What Now,” is her most accomplished to date. Its intoxicating blend of sinewy R&B, skittering rock and heady psychedelia should be enhanced on an outdoor concert stage under the stars.

She and her band will be here Saturday at the 1,450-seat Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, one day after their second weekend performance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, whose 125,000 daily attendance capacity is 86.2 times bigger than that of Humphreys..

7:30 p.m. Saturday. Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, 2241 Shelter Island Drive, Shelter Island. $52.50. hummphreysconcerts.com

Andrea von Kampen, Westin Crown Center Hotel, Feb. , 2023,Kansas City, Missouri.

Andrea Von Kampen, with Handsome Ghost

I’m not prone to betting. But I’ll take almost any odds that — in the history of the Whistle Stop — Monday’s performance by Andrea Von Kampen will be the first at the popular South Park bar by a devoutly Christian singer-songwriter who cites Italian mystic Saint Francis of Assisi as a key inspiration.

The co-star of the blink-and-you-missed-it 2022 indie-film “A Chance Encounter,” this Nebraska-based troubadour told an interviewer a few years ago that her music is not suited for listeners to get drunk.

Indeed, it isn’t.

Von Kampen, 29, crafts gentle, introspective songs that showcase her dulcet voice. Like her biggest inspiration, Paul Simon, her consistently tasteful acoustic guitar playing cushions her singing like a hand in a well-worn silk glove.

How her understated music will go over at the Whistle Stop remains to be seen. But if the audience is attentive and respectful, well, minor miracles do sometimes happen in unlikely settings.

9 p.m. Monday. The Whistle Stop, 2236 Fern Street, South Park. $17.50 (must be 21 or older to attend). (619) 284-6784 , whistlestopbar.com
