Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944) is a notoriously influential and inspiring English rock guitarist, who has played with the Yardbirds, the The Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice.

Born in the London Borough of Sutton, UK, Beck began his musical excursions singing in his local church choir before learning to play a borrowed guitar and making his instruments. Inspired to play after hearing Les Paul, B.B. King and Steve Cropper, throughout the early ‘60s Beck played in a string of bands including the Rumbles and the Tridents and made his first vinyl appearance as a session guitarist on the Fitz and Startz single “I’m Not Running Away”.

At the request of session man Jimmy Page, The Yardbirds recruited Beck to replace Eric Clapton as lead guitarist, during Beck’s 20-month tenure The Yardbirds recorded the majority of their most popular and revered songs.

After being kicked out of the Yardbirds for rarely showing up and completing a short solo project which resulted in the two solo UK hit singles “Hi Ho Silver Lining” and “Tallyman”, Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group. The Jeff Beck Group temporarily had a line-up of Beck, ex-Shadow man Jet Harris on bass, Rod Stewart on vocals, Ronnie Wood on guitar and Nicky Hopkins on piano. The band’s first release “Truth” (1968) performed significantly better than the second “Beck-Ola” (1969) and resentment ended the band in 1969.

After a serious car accident in 1970 and a failed idea to start a power-trio with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert, Beck formed a new version of the Jeff Beck Group. The reformation however didn’t cause much of a stir with the albums “Rough and Ready (1971) and “Jeff Beck Group” (1972), and with the the breakup of the band Cactus, Beck, Appice and Bogert formed a power-trio in 1973.

In 1975 after a quiet period for the guitarist, Beck release the instrumental jazz-fusion album “Blow by Blow” which garnered critical acclaim as did his follow-up with Jan Hammer on the 1976 album “Wired”. Releases from Beck after this time appeared fewer and further between with his next release the Jan Hammer-contributed “There and Back” arrived in 1980 after which Beck toured extensively, before retiring again.

Five years later in 1986 Beck released the pop/rock album “Flash” produced by Nile Rodgers. On the album the single “People Get Ready” features vocals from Rod Stewart, as well as featuring the Grammy winning instrumental single “Escape”. Prior to the release of the Grammy award winning “Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas” in 1989, Beck played lead guitar on Mick Jagger’s second solo album “Primitive Cool”.

In 1992 Beck contributed lead guitar on the Roger Water comeback album “Amused to Death” before releasing a tribute album to Gene Vincent entitled “Crazy Legs” in 1993. After a six-year break came “Who Else! You Had It Coming” in 1999, followed by “Jeff” in 2001, the live set “Performing This Week: Live at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club” in 2008, and “Emotion & Commontion” in 2010. The album won two Grammys for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Beck subsequently release a live album titled “Live and Exclusive from the Grammy Museum in 2010, followed by a tribute album to Les Paul entitled “Rock & Roll Party” the same year.

Live reviews

It's just so hard to describe Jeff Beck. You have to see him. Being one of the pioneers of rock, playing with the Yardbirds in the 60's, went from their wailing blues to psychedelic blues as the three (Beck Clapton Page) guitarists divulged into Cream and Led Zeppelin. Jeff evolved into a modern guitar God enigma.

He has smooth riffs, blending into another with complete control of his effects, never using them repeatedly for lack of musicality. His quality of playing is always forefront to the gimmicks. You could give him a cheap guitar and he will sound like Jeff Beck because of his skill of playing.

His "People Get Ready" live instrumental rendition blew me off my seat when He played with Jeff Healy, Stevie Ray Vaughn at the now called Rogers Centre. The fans that had the pleasure to see him at Ronny Scotts are probably still shaking their heads on how he played the strat with slide and whammy harmonics, simultaneously. He will sustain a bend; climaxing in a flurry riff that you would have to play it back slowly to figure out what he was playing.

He has evolved in uncharted territory. He plays with raw, controlled emotion and mastery of his instrument. He can play so soulful (Definitely Maybe - Jeff Beck Group70's), he can make the Strat cry. He once quoted that a lot of good music comes by accident and rarely repeats his riffs, unless they are patented JB riffs. He builds a sculpture, then breaks the mold. He always comes up with something new, keeping you on edge until he pulls it out unexpectedly, like he did with "People Get Ready". He is one of England's National Treasures and I am a very happy man to be a witness to the journey he has taken.

Well to start with, the show for Jeff Beck was very disappointing. Most of his songs were just screaming distorted sounds that sounded the same throughout the entire performance. We mainly purchased tickets to see him on stage with bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, who was not on his show! Instead he had a mediocre bass player who did nothing to add to the songs played. Tal makes Jeff play more melodic with feeling. Even on his ballad song "Cause We Ended As Lovers" had no bass solo, a staple part for Tal in which she steals the song from Jeff.

To make the show even worse than it could ever be, guitarist Buddy Guy performed right after Jeff Beck and all you heard was him saying the "F Bomb" word all night long, so disrespectful to the audience & minors that were present. If Buddy thinks by laying his guitar down while beating it with a towel while it feedsback, he should record himself & see how immature if really is, that's not music, nor beating the guitar strings with a bow. I've seen him 2xs before, and each time he has been intoxicated on stage. The worse was when he put his guitar up in the ceiling rafter while it was

feeding back & he couldn't get it down!! The entire show sucked.

Perhaps one of Britain's most celebrated musicians, guitarist Jeff Beck had the coveted opportunity to play alongside The Yardbirds as well as other iconic performers Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Now performing solo at the grand age of 70, the guitarist has not lost any of his abilities or stage presence.

An eccentric through and through, Beck was born to be onstage and you can understand why he refuses to take early retirement as you listen to the deafening cheers as he steps proudly out to his adoring crowd. Playing a bold cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'Little Wing' he easily demonstrates his masterful abilities and this level of expertise continues throughout the evening. His accompanying musicians are talented within their own rights, but the whole attention is well and truly on Jeff and his guitar. The complexity of 'Big Block' evokes mass cheers from the crowd and as he exits the stage they are left under the impression that Beck will not be hanging up the strings and plectrum anytime soon.

I was glad an excited to see this venue, for two of the finest, at Denver's premier stages outside this summer. Buddy Guy landed his licks, among the crowd when he walked round expressing the sources of bluesdom mixed with rock. His performance was outstanding, loved his Blues, totally.

The Jeff Beck Band was more ,of an up to date format ,moving to the next level of his career. At his age, traveling through his past, didn't seem to slow his performance one bit. His band showed their energy and flowed to us in every song played... moved the lyrics into our brains n out of our tearful eyes. The vocalists (times two) showed how to get it right. My gratitude is heart felt, Thanks to both of you, splendidly.

A terrific show on August 7th, 2016. One that will be talked about, reviewed, over all He is a Rock Legend, true to form.

I've been a jeff beck fan since the mid 60's (yes I'm an old burnout).his playing was as crisp and smooth as it was in 1971,when i last saw him live.his play list was a good representation of his work for the last several years with just enough of his early tunes thrown in to please us older fans.i would strongly recommend younger folks to go and see beck play.remember he came onto the British rock/blues scene with guitarists eric clapton, jimmy page and peter green.

The crowd was of mixed age with plenty of young folks there to check this guy out.from what i saw there were no concert antics like the 70's.my take on this show was time and money well spent. The venue daily's place ampatheatre was a pleasant surprise.thanks songkick i sure could have used you back in the day.you now have a customer for life, great experience.

This was a first class concert. I had not seen Jeff live before but was extremely impressed with the whole package, his playing, the band and the material they played. I was really impressed with the two young girls who were outstanding and the drummer was incredible. I would like to know if the drummer was Simon Phillips who played with him some years back and is, of that standard. All in all a great concert. The band was so surprised to be asked to do an encore that they had not planned for one and took a few minutes to agree on what to play. if he tours again in this country I would go back and see him again.

Great show overall - but a bit short at just over 90 minutes (including an encore). Front of house mix was a bit hit and miss for first 15-20 mins (drums and bass a bit overpowering) but settled down when the male vocalist - who was outstanding- came on. Backing musicians were outstanding and Jeff was in good form with Big Block, Superstition, A Day in the Life and Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers stand outs.

Jeff lets his guitar do the talking but the show would benefit from a few more words from Jeff - he was even quieter than usual but the singer was excellent and helped communication with the audience.

I'm from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, my name is Casimiro Monge...yesterday after 30 or more years wanting to see and listen live this genius of electric guitar, i made it ! something memorable for me, a form of happiness that transcends me, his passion, his taste, his technique, his everything is really great ... for me the least predesible...you do not know what note interpret...today I can say, I will die happy !! Excellent show, great set list, although I would have liked to interpret Blue Wind of his album Wired.

Long live to Jeff Beck!!!

Jeff Beck has 5 decades of music, on Saturday night he played for only 70 minutes. 25 of those minutes we were forced to listen to Johnny Depp sing. It was the worst concert I've ever been to. Compare this concert to Santana a month ago. Santana played for 3.5 hours, tickets were only $35 and when the tickets arrived included was a copy of his latest CD. That was a concert to remember.

Jeff Beck Announces Massive U.S. Tour, Ann Wilson and ZZ Top to Support

Jacob Uitti

Legendary blues-rock guitarist Jeff Beck has announced an upcoming U.S. tour, which will include support from other big names like Ann Wilson (of Heart) and ZZ Top.

Videos by American Songwriter

The string of 27 dates, which kicks off on September 23 at the Germania Insurance Amphitheater in Del Valle, Texas, follows the release of Beck’s new album, 18 , with actor-musician Johnny Depp.

The Depp-Beck album gave Beck his first top-10 record on the Billboard chart.

The first six shows of Beck’s tour will include support from ZZ Top and upcoming shows in Texas, Tennessee and Alabama will include Wilson.

Reportedly, on tour, Beck will largely focus on the songs from 18 , though he will surely dip into older material, as well. Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.

Over the course of his distinguished 50-plus-year music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards , been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the "100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time," and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice — once as a member of THE YARDBIRDS and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl.

Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as THE YARDBIRDS ' lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form THE JEFF BECK GROUP , which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums — "Truth" (1968) and "Beck-Ola" (1969) — would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come.

The constantly evolving Beck 's next move — a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice , which released "Beck, Bogert And Appice" (1973),once again shattered people's preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like.

1985's "Flash" kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the "Best Rock Instrumental" Grammy for the song "Escape" . A second Grammy came with Jeff Beck 's "Guitar Shop" with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas , and a third for "Dirty Mind" from the "You Had It Coming" album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling "Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott's" , which earned a Grammy for "A Day In The Life" .

Beck 's astonishing 2010 solo album, "Emotion & Commotion" , brought about two additional Grammy Awards ; Beck was nominated in five categories before bringing home three: "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for "Hammerhead" and "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Nessun Dorma" , both from "Emotion & Commotion" , and "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals" for "Imagine" , his collaboration with Herbie Hancock .

His "Rock 'N' Roll Party (Honoring Les Paul)" album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for "Best Rock Album". In 2016 he released "Loud Hailer" and in 2017 "Jeff Beck: Live At The Hollywood Bowl" was released, both to widespread critical acclaim.

Announced today, JEFF BECK will tour the U.S. this fall in support of the newly released, highly anticipated musical collaboration with Johnny Depp, 18. Full itinerary is below with all dates subject to change and more dates to be announced.   The tour will focus on the new album as well as explore Beck’s legendary career through instrumentals like “You Know You Know,” “A Day in the Life” and “Brush with the Blues.” The tour will include BECK’s current band: bassist Rhonda Smith , drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Robert Stevenson .   BECK and DEPP’s 13-track album, 18 , debuted at #10 on both the Billboard Top Albums and Top Current Albums charts marking the first top 10 for both Beck and Depp on the 31-year-old Top Album Sales chart.  The set is available on CD and digitally, with a 180-gram black vinyl version coming on September 30. The duo recently wrapped a successful European tour together on July 25 in Paris, France to much fan and critical acclaim with sold-out dates throughout northern Europe, Italy and France – including a stop at the revered Montreux Jazz Festival. Jeff Beck found a kindred spirit in Johnny Depp when the two met in 2016. They bonded quickly over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make each other laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and his ear for music. That talent and their chemistry convinced Beck they should make an album together.   Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years, they recorded a mix of Depp originals along with a wide range of covers that touches on everything from Celtic and Motown, to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says with a laugh. “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”   Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues, and jazz. Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his five decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl with special guests including Buddy Guy, Steven Tyler, Beth Hart, Billy F. Gibbons and Jan Hammer.    JEFF BECK U.S. Tour Dates September 23  Del Valle, TX @ Germania Insurance Amphitheater (with ZZ Top/Ann Wilson) September 24  Dallas, TX @ Dos Equis Pavilion (with ZZ Top/Ann Wilson) September 25  The Woodlands, TX @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (w/ZZ Top/Ann Wilson) September 27  Franklin, TN @ First Bank Amphitheater (w/ZZ Top) September 29  Pelham, AL @ Oak Mountain Amphitheatre (w/ZZ Top) September 30  Orange Beach, AL @ The Wharf Amphitheater (w/ZZ Top) October 1        Atlanta, GA @ Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre October 4        Washington, DC @ The Anthem October 6        Boston, MA @ MGM Music Hall at Fenway October 7&8   Port Chester, NY @ Capitol Theatre October 10      Red Bank, NJ @ Count Basie Center for the Arts October 13      Kingston, NY @ Ulster Performing Arts Center October 14&15 Huntington, NY @ The Paramount October 17      Toronto, ON @ Meridian Hall October 19      Nashville, IN @ Brown County Music Center October 20      Cincinnati, OH @ The Andrew J Brady Music Center October 22      Louisville, KY @ The Louisville Palace Theater October 23      Chicago, IL @ Chicago Theatre November 1    Phoenix, AZ @ Celebrity Theatre November 2    Temecula, CA@ Pechanga Resort & Casino November 4    Las Vegas, NV @ The Pearl Concert Theater November 5    Thousand Oaks, CA @ Bank of America Performing Arts Center Thousand Oaks November 6    Los Angeles, CA @ Orpheum Theatre November 8    Anaheim, CA @ City National Grove of Anaheim November 9    San Jose, CA @ San Jose Civic November 10  Sacramento, CA @ Hard Rock Live November 12  Reno, NV @ Grand Theatre, Grand Sierra Resort   *All dates subject to change, more dates TBA

"Every single note he played could kill me with its beauty": Celebrating the life of a man regularly described by his peers as the greatest guitarist of them all, Jeff Beck

A look back on the life, times and truly extraordinary music of the The Guv’nor

Jeff Beck holding a guitar (studio portrait)

It wasn’t the number of records or concert tickets that he sold, and it certainly wasn’t his rock-god image that defined Jeff Beck – although he was plentifully endowed in all these departments. Rather, it was the unique depth and durability of his artistry that elevated him to the status of perhaps the best electric guitarist the world has ever known – and certainly the best over the distance.

Rather like Pelé or Michael Jordan or Roger Federer, Beck transcended statistical measures of greatness, to arrive at a state of grace where it was his peers who most enthusiastically acknowledged his supreme skill. David Gilmour called him “the most consistently brilliant guitarist”. Brian May declared himself to be “absolutely in awe of him”. And, as Steve Lukather put it, “No one will ever come close [to Beck]. One note is all he had to play and it was game over.”

“You’d listen to Jeff along the way and you’d say: ‘Wow, he’s getting really good,’” recalled Jimmy Page , when he was inducting Beck into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (for the second time) as a solo artist in 2009. “Then you’d listen to him a few years later and he’d just keep getting better and better and better. And he still has, all the way through. He leaves us mere mortals just wondering.”

Given his generally robust condition and enduring presence among the classic rock greats, Jeff Beck’s sudden and unexpected death in 2023, from bacterial meningitis at the age of 78, cast a long shadow over the rock world and threw a new light on a career of sometimes explosive and always surpassing excellence. He had just finished one of his more industrious years, undertaking a lengthy stretch of dates in the UK, Europe and North America throughout 2022, promoting what turned out to be his final studio album, 18, released in July the same year.

The album was recorded with Johnny Depp , who joined him on tour – a collaboration that certainly underlined Beck’s continued willingness to offer unexpected challenges to his audience. He also performed a run of shows with ZZ Top and singer Ann Wilson which elicited more traditionally outstanding performances from all concerned. Check out the footage of Beck performing Rough Boy with ZZ Top, and marvel at how he converts a southern rock ballad into music of the spheres.

Thanks to his pioneering work in the 1960s with The Yardbirds and his own group, Beck was anointed alongside Page and Eric Clapton as one of the ‘Holy Trinity’ of English guitarists – all three of whom had passed through the The Yardbirds. But while Clapton subsequently retreated from his role as a virtuoso steeped in the blues tradition, and Page channelled the overwhelming majority of his energies into driving the Led Zeppelin juggernaut (which ground to a halt after the death of their drummer John Bonham in 1980), Beck never stopped his quest for mastery over all aspects of his instrument and new avenues for expressing himself on it.

Beck was a guitarist in the purest sense. He was not a singer (apart from his reluctant vocal performance on his 1967 hit single Hi Ho Silver Lining , and one or two tracks tucked away on his solo albums). And although he scooped up a few songwriting credits here and there – particularly on the Jeff Beck Group album Rough And Ready (1971) and his 2016 studio album Loud Hailer – he was not a lyricist and never really a songwriter per se.

His guitar was his voice and means of expression. His core creative mission was to attend in infinite detail to the touch, the sound and the playing of his instrument to ever greater degrees of excellence. You could describe the process as a lifelong spiritual quest or calling that he pursued, while leaving “mere mortals”, as Page put it, to wonder how he had done it.

Alt

Geoffrey Arnold Beck was born and grew up in Wallington, Surrey, where as a teenager he learned to play on a borrowed guitar. His primary influences were American blues guitarists such as Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. Once he had got hold of an electric guitar, he started off with a brief stint in Screaming Lord Sutch And The Savages before joining local R&B group The Tridents.

His big break came when his 21-year-old friend Jimmy Page – who was already making a name for himself as a session musician – recommended Beck as the replacement for Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds in 1965, just as the band embarked on a string of trans-Atlantic hits starting with For Your Love .

Although he was a key figure in the British blues boom, Beck took an early exit from what Carlos Santana called “the BB King highway”. Beck’s first single with The Yardbirds, Heart Full Of Soul , was notable for the Indian-influenced bends in the guitar hook which he provided (which was originally written to be played on a sitar).

His solo on The Yardbirds’ 1966 hit Shapes Of Things was a further harbinger of the incredibly imaginative and revolutionary dimension he brought to his instrument. Inspired by the sitar sounds that The Beatles had recently introduced to the pop world, on Shapes Of Things Beck took off on a crazy, raga-type exposition, full of odd bends, “micro-sitar sounds” and atonal squalls of feedback that was unlike anything that had come before.

Pete Townshend had introduced the idea of harnessing the extraneous noises that could be coaxed from an overdriven guitar amp, on The Who ’s single Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere , released in 1965. But it was Beck’s sortie on Shapes Of Things and the B-side, Mister You’re A Better Man Than I , that brought the idea into focus and put down a clear marker for what could – and soon would – be accomplished, at least six months before the unknown Jimi Hendrix arrived to play his first gigs in London.

Hendrix himself was an early subscriber to the Jeff Beck appreciation society. “Hendrix was fascinated by Jeff Beck’s playing,” recalled ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons , who toured with Hendrix in 1968. “He would put on one of his records and say to me: ‘Man, how do you think Jeff Beck is doing this?’”

It wasn’t just his groundbreaking technique that marked Beck out. A quiet and often reserved character off stage, he liked a drink but had little interest in drugs. “I didn’t like the idea of losing who I was. I had to stay sane. I watched everyone else fall down and it was so boring. Every night it was: ‘Who’s got the stuff?’” But he nevertheless brought a ton of attitude to the gig.

His status as a figurehead of the Swinging Sixties was underlined emphatically by his role in the film 1966 Blow Up , directed by Michelangelo Antonioni, in which The Yardbirds were featured playing on a set that was a replica of the Ricky-Tick club in Windsor. Beck was required to smash his guitar to pieces during Stroll On – an adaptation of the old rockabilly song The Train Kept A-Rollin’ . He understandably refused to destroy his own guitar, a 1954 Gibson Les Paul .

“So they got Hofner to bring down these shitty guitars,” Beck later recalled. “I had this tea chest of twenty-five-pound joke guitars, and I went right through them with this Hofner rep watching at the side. He thought it was all great fun.”

According to The Yardbirds’ manager, Simon Napier-Bell, the experience of making the film gave Beck a taste for smashing up equipment on stage during the group’s ensuing US tour. “Gig after gig, he tottered round the stage, ramming the neck of his guitar through the speakers and crashing his feet into the delicate electrical controls. I was left a prisoner in my suite at the Chicago Hilton, phoning round America trying to find the location of every Marshall amp in the country and chartering planes to fly them to the next evening’s gig, only to be destroyed by another night’s bad-tempered Beck-ing.”

No doubt there was an element of exaggeration in Napier-Bell’s account. But maybe not that much. “Those amps never worked,” Beck later recalled. “I threw this amp out of the window once. It was in Phoenix or Tucson. The air-conditioning had broken. It was a hundred and forty degrees, unbearable heat, and the amp was crackling and then the heat just blew it up. It was a Vox, I think, and I just tossed the whole thing out the window. The power amp had a fixed cannon socket, so it wouldn’t pull out, and it was only that which prevented it from hitting this passer-by underneath. The amp was swinging above his head. God, we were tearaways.”

Beck left The Yardbirds midway through a US tour in 1966, pleading “inflamed brain, inflamed tonsils and an inflamed cock”, and soon embarked on a solo career.

After an unlikely string of hit singles, including Tallyman, Love Is Blue and the strangely unsinkable Hi Ho Silver Lining all masterminded by producer and pop Svengali Mickie Most, he formed his own group with Rod Stewart (vocals), Ronnie Wood (bass) and Mickey Waller (drums).

The debut album with this lineup, Truth (credited simply to Jeff Beck), released in August 1968, paved the way for the invention of the heavy rock genre, with tracks including You Shook Me, Rock My Plimsoul and Let Me Love You providing a virtual blueprint for the first Led Zeppelin album.

Such were the similarities in approach, Beck felt that with Zeppelin his old friend Page had borrowed over-freely from his stock of ideas. He vividly recalled the mixture of emotions he felt on hearing the first Led Zeppelin album, released the following year: “I was stunned, shocked, annoyed, flattered and just a bit miffed by the whole thing. But they had the lead singer that was going for the kill. But Rod… Maybe if I’d handled myself a bit better, kept Rod on the rails a bit. But things just happen. Every day is like a year back then, you don’t have much long-term view of things. You just fight for tomorrow all the time.”

After follow-up album Beck-Ola (1969), the Jeff Beck Group (Mk.1) disbanded with typically maladroit timing just before they were due to play at the Woodstock festival. Looking back in more recent times, Beck took a philosophical view. “I have to be grateful that I didn’t succeed, because you’re then lashed to the whipping post. I wouldn’t swap places with Jimmy [Page]. As much as I’d have loved to have been in Led Zeppelin and enjoyed all those amazing shows, in hindsight I’m much better off being a scout, going out in the field. That’s what I see myself as.

"Ironically, Page had an album called Outrider – and I was the outrider! I never, ever envisaged having massive success. And I’m glad I didn’t, otherwise people would be pointing at me in the street."

Beck put together a new line-up and recorded two interim albums with the Jeff Beck Group (Mk.2), the line-up being notable for the inclusion of keyboard player Max Middleton alongside Cozy Powell (drums), Clive Chaman (bass) and Bobby Tench (vocals/guitar). He also convened the short-lived supergroup Beck, Bogert & Appice (with the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist/vocalist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice) who released one self-titled studio album in 1973.

While the musicianship on these recordings was always of the highest order, there was the nagging sense of a supreme talent being employed in the service of less than stellar material. Then in 1975 Beck, together with Middleton, joined forces with George Martin , producer of The Beatles , and recorded Blow By Blow , an instrumental jazz/fusion album that set him apart from his superstar peers and pointed him on the path that would lead to the ultimate blooming of his artistry.

Fondly remembered for Beck’s spine-tingling interpretations of Stevie Wonder’s songs Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers and Thelonius – along with the Middleton composition Freeway Jam which quickly became one of Beck’s most reliable calling cards, Blow By Blow became his most successful album, reaching No.4 in the US and selling a million copies.

“That album was really a turning point,” Beck later recalled. “It gave me wings I never thought I had. It opened up the doors. It was red carpet, you know. Following it was difficult.” But follow it he did, with the equally remarkable and refined Wired (1976), again produced by George Martin, which marked the start of a liaison with keyboard player Jan Hammer along with Middleton (keyboards) and drummer Narada Michael Walden. Among the high points were the infectiously funky Come Dancing (written by Walden), an eerie Hammer composition Blue Wind , and a stunning version of the Charles Mingus standard Goodbye Pork Pie Hat given the full-screen Beck treatment.

“George Martin was probably the best producer I’ve had – the guy who could framework what I do without interfering,” Beck said, looking back on that period.

Beck concluded a trilogy of jazz fusion albums with There And Back , released in 1980, which remains one of his most underrated albums. With both Jan Hammer and Tony Hymas on keyboards, Mo Foster on bass and the superhuman Simon Phillips on drums, Beck took an uber-technical yet super-catchy melodic format to its outer limits.

The opening track, Star Cycle , a typically taut and edgy rumble written by Hammer, became the theme music for the zeitgeist-defining UK music TV show The Tube , while the supercharged, double-bass-drum-driven Space Boogie (written by Hymas and Phillips) took the virtuoso prowess of trailblazers like the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobham into a thrilling new, accessible dimension.

Beck became something of a recluse – by rock star standards – during the 1980s and 1990s. While Clapton, Page and many of his other contemporaries were bestriding the stages in London and Philadelphia during Live Aid in 1986, Beck was content to follow events on a TV in the corner while he worked on one of his vintage hot rods in the garage of his estate near Tunbridge Wells.

“I didn’t want to go, because I hate large crowds,” he said afterwards. “I don’t mind playing to them, as long as you can get away quickly afterwards. But I wouldn’t have fitted in there anyway.”

Beck freely admitted at the time that his 1985 album Flash was recorded in response to record company pleas for “something we can sell”. Nile Rodgers was brought in as someone with a commercial ear to help with the production, and Beck was even persuaded to sing on a couple of tracks. The album was memorable for a reunion with Rod Stewart, who sang a heartfelt version of Curtis Mayfield’s People Get Ready , and for the track Escape , written by Jan Hammer, which won a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. But regardless of the accolades, Beck’s heart didn’t seem altogether to be in it.

It was around this time Beck started to become known as an elite gun-for-hire, a role that he was happy to embrace but never took too seriously.

He contributed to Tina Turner ’s breakthrough album Private Dancer (1984). “I played a pink Jackson guitar, and she sang Private Dancer once and Steel Claw once and that was it.” He worked on two of Mick Jagger’s solo albums, but dropped out of the band that Jagger was putting together to tour in Australia and Japan because “I didn’t want to play a load of Keith Richards licks”. He performed a supercharged slide solo on Jon Bon Jovi’s debut solo single Blaze Of Glory , a US No.1 hit in 1990. And he contributed to Roger Waters ’ album Amused To Death (1992).

“I didn’t know what the hell the album was about,” Beck said. “[Waters] did explain it to me, but I wasn’t really listening. We just blazed away for about fifteen minutes, had a cup of coffee and went home. Forgot all about it. Next thing, it wound up as the lead track on the album.”

Beck’s blithe demeanour and seemingly offhand approach belied a steely determination to excel at everything he did, while never taking the accolades that were routinely heaped on him and his work too seriously. He was a connoisseur of musical styles and sounds, so much so that it seemed nothing was beyond his reach. Crazy Legs , an album he recorded in 1993 with the Big Town Playboys, was a spectacularly authentic homage to the guitarist Cliff Gallup who played with Gene Vincent on his first two albums, Bluejean Bop! (1956) and Gene Vincent And The Blue Caps (1957).

“Cliff Gallup’s guitar playing was absolutely phenomenal,” Beck said at the time. “His solos are so packed with dynamite on the wild numbers, and yet they’re full of knowledge and fluidity, melodic as hell.”

Beck’s command of the old-school finger-picking, rockabilly style employed by Gallup set him apart from the other rock guitar heroes of his – or indeed any – generation. As he continued to move through genres – from jazz rock to the more experimental sounds of electronica and 21st-century production methods – he never stopped improving, refining and exploring a playing style that gradually became little short of supernatural.

He continued to maintain a practising regime of anything between four and 10 hours daily. And somewhere along the line he ditched his plectrum completely and developed a way of micromanaging the pitch and tone of his Stratocaster by wrapping his fingers round the whammy bar while picking with his thumb. The technique gave him an uncanny ability to sculpt the shape and sound of the notes he was playing in an extraordinary style aptly summed up by guitarist Steve Lukather’s observation: “One note… and it was game over.”

By the time he reached the new millennium, Beck could acquit himself with distinction in virtually any musical environment. He was an incredible slide guitarist, as evidenced by his astonishing performance of the Nitin Sawhney composition Nadia captured on Beck’s album You Had It Coming (2000), in which he returned to his instrumental brief and extended it to encompass the realms of electronica, drum & bass, you name it.

He regularly got some of the finest musicians in the world to play in his bands. His live album with the Jan Hammer Group (1977) was an early landmark, while the trio comprising Tony Hymas (keyboards/bass) and Terry Bozzio (drums) with whom he toured and recorded the 1989 album Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop were like ninja warriors.

But it was a run of dates at London club Ronnie Scott’s in 2007 that found him close to the absolute peak of his powers with one of the greatest and most sympatico line-ups he ever assembled: Jason Rebello (keyboards), Tal Wilkenfeld (bass) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). The sound and atmosphere in the venue on those nights was like nothing else – especially when Colaiuta and Beck sparred on the Billy Cobham tune Spectrum and the double-bass drum roller-coaster ride of Space Boogie . Beck’s wondrous interpretation of the Lennon/McCartney song A Day In The Life captured on the resulting album Live At Ronnie Scott’s (2008) won him yet another Grammy for Best Instrumental Rock Performance.

Beck’s 2010 album Emotion And Commotion (which netted him two more Grammys) found him stretching out in more unexpected directions (neo-classical, orchestral, soul) in the company of various singers including Joss Stone and Imelda May. Soon after it was released, May joined him at a special concert at the Iridium, New York in honour of guitar legend Les Paul. One of the songs they performed that night, a version of Remember (Walking In The Sand) , a sixties hit by the ShangriLas, was a performance beyond compare.

“He inspired, supported and encouraged me with every whoop, cheer, gasp and tear when I sang with him,” May wrote on social media soon after the news of Beck’s death broke. “He was the genius in the room yet he made everyone else around him feel special. He was dedicated to making pure art. Every single note he played could kill me with its beauty. His light was so blindingly bright it already feels dark without him. The greatest guitarist that ever lived. The finest friend you could wish for. Thank you Jeff Beck.”

His old bandmate Ronnie Wood expressed similar sentiments: “Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him. I’m sending much sympathy to [his widow] Sandra, his family, and all who loved him. I want to thank him for all our early days together in the Jeff Beck Group, conquering America for the first time. Musically we were breaking all the rules, it was fantastic, groundbreaking rock’n’roll! Listen to the incredible track Plynth in his honour. Jeff, I will always love you. God bless.”

“Jeff you were the greatest, my man,” Rod Stewart said. “Thank you for everything.”

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Jeff Beck Announces Fall 2022 Tour Dates

Today, two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Jeff Beck, announced a forthcoming U.S. fall tour. The run of shows is slated to begin on Sept. 23 in Del Valle, Texas; Beck will be joined on stage for his first six shows by his longtime friends and rock icons, ZZ Top.

After a late-September tour opener, the musician’s run will wrap on Nov. 12 in Reno, Nev., but not before Beck hits numerous hot spot venues, including Atlanta’s Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, Chicago’s Chicago Theatre and Port Chester, N.Y.’s The Capitol Theatre.

Beck’s forthcoming run supports his latest album, 18 , in collaboration with Johnny Depp, which debuted at #10 on both Billboard’s Top Albums and Top Current Albums. The tour will also explore his legendary career, taking fans through renditions of Beck classics, including “Brush with the Blues” and “A Day in the Life,” coupled with new material.

After bonding over cars and guitars back in 2016, Beck and Depp quickly found themselves as kindred spirits. They agreed to create an album together and began in 2019 and worked for three years, sampling some of Depp’s originals and a mosaic of covers from numerous genres of music. “We were going to call the album ‘Kitchen Sink’ because we threw everything in it,” Beck shared in a press release. He continued, “The only game plan we had was to play songs we like and see where they took us.”

The record – which dropped back in July – features mostly covers, including renditions of Killing Joke’s The Death & Resurrection Show and John Lennon’s Isolation , as well as two originals: This Is a Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr and Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade .

The latter was the subject of criticism recently when Rolling Stone alleged Beck and Depp had stolen lines for the track from a 1960s spoken word poem , written by an incarcerated man known as Slim Wilson.

2023 Jeff Beck Tribute Concert Led By Clapton, Stewart, Wood

Gary Clark Jr., Ronnie Wood, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton and Nathan East during “People Get Ready” during A Tribute to Jeff Beck at London’s Royal Albert Hall, May 22, 2023

Jeff Beck was honored on May 22, 2023 by many of his musical peers and acolytes at the first of two tribute concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The pair of shows were announced on March 10 by his wife, Sandra Beck, and Eric Clapton, to honor the memory and artistry of the trailblazing rock guitarist who died on Jan. 10 at age 78 after a sudden illness. The first of two shows, on a Monday night, featured significant wattage in its all-star lineup with Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Billy Gibbons, and Johnny Depp—who toured with Beck in 2022 during the legend’s final tour—among the many artists joining Clapton. Tickets for the shows quickly sold-out.

The first thing the audience saw was Beck’s guitar on a pedestal on stage, under a spotlight. While other touches were far more subtle—Depp, for instance, wore a Beck bracelet on his left arm—others were there for all to see: Clapton and Stewart hugged when they performed “People Get Ready” towards the emotional evening’s end.

The career-spanning concert featured a broad assortment of songs associated with the guitar legend. Early on were a pair of Yardbirds hits, “Shapes of Things” (with Clapton singing lead) and “Heart Full of Soul.” Clapton then welcomed Derek Trucks, and soon thereafter, Susan Tedeschi to the stage.

Other career-spanning repertoire included “Freeway Jam,” so closely associated with Beck ‘s 1977 live album with the Jan Hammer Group. Beck was a frequent touring partner of ZZ Top. On this night, the band’s Billy Gibbons performed “Rough Boy,” which they had played together many times.

Irish singer Imelda May joined the lineup, which now included Johnny Depp, to sing “Remember (Walking in the Sand),” a song popularized by the Shangri-Las in 1964. She and Beck had performed it many times.

John McLaughlin, 81 years old, who led the jazz fusion band, Mahavishnu Orchestra, performed a song that Beck often played: “You Know You Know” from the band’s 1971 debut.

When Beck passed, his peers shared their grief, many describing him as their “hero” and “inspiration.” “You were the greatest, my man,” wrote Stewart, when Beck passed. During Rod’s set at the May 22 tribute concert, he said, “I never thought I’d be here playing a concert in tribute to my dear old pal, Jeff Beck.” He kicked off his mini-set with “Infatuation,” his 1984 hit that featured Beck on guitar. Here, he was joined by Clapton and Wood, with Slowhand taking Beck’s solo.

After introducing Gary Clark Jr., Stewart joked, “I’ve never seen so many guitars in my life!” He then introduced “the greatest civil rights song ever written,” as the band began the unmistakable introduction to “People Get Ready,” the 1965 song by the Impressions that Beck and Stewart recorded in 1985. During Clark Jr.’s solo, Clapton and Stewart hugged, earning more crowd applause.

Clapton then sang “Going Down,” recorded by the Jeff Beck Group in 1972, as the evening’s finale.

Other performers included Doyle Bramhall, Robert Randolph, Olivia Safe, Joss Stone, and from the Jeff Beck Band, Rhonda Smith, Anika Nilles and Robert Stevenson. Surplus income from the concerts will be donated to the Folly Wildlife Rescue based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Thanks to Matt Lee and Albrecht Peltzer for the videos.

“One of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him,” said Wood when Beck passed.

Tributes For JD Souther Who Co-Wrote Eagles’ ‘Heartache Tonight,’ ‘Best of My Love’

I Personally knew Jeff Beck. We met in 1977. Jeff was a friend who helped guide me. He knew I was in love with music, so he tryed me out. I was 18. I used to sit with him working on songs he was trying to write. He was a perfectionist. He worked on my look, had photos taken of me, and put me in things to give me the experience. I used to assist him at home, reading him his fan mail. He was trying to get his Band The Jeff Beck Group back together. He was an inspiration. And love to try new things, experiment. He even wanted to send me to school to study music. I shared many moments with Jeff. I walked around the Hollywood Bowl with him one time, sitting on the Benches looking up at the Stage, as he dreamed of one day getting to play there. I am so glad this dream came true, as 40 years later, I would be back to see him play there many times. I was at one of the last concerts he did at the Orpheum Theatre here in LA. I will never forget this. He loved his fans.

JUST saw this…what an incredible tribute to the beautiful, wonderful, talented, handsome Jeff Beck. Still makes me sad to know he is gone. He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met and had a good sense of humor as well. Love you always, Jeff.

The crowd rose to its feet when Beck announced that his “beautiful baby” — Depp — was about to join the stage. The actor, wearing a newsboy hat, flannel-patterned jacket, sunglasses, bandanas, chains and holding a cigarette, strolled out to the sounds of Link Wray’s “Rumble,” joining Beck in a hug as the crowd exploded in applause. Depp and Beck played off each other, backed by Nilles’ pulsating beat, as Depp swayed from side to side, grinning and acknowledging screaming fans in the crowd, holding his hand to his heart.

Depp and Beck cruised through the rest of the set, with a performance of John Lennon’s “Isolation,” an instrumental of the Beatles’ classic “A Day in the Life,” a swirling odyssey through the Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” and a fiery finale of Killing Joke’s “The Death and Resurrection Show.”

Show opener Desure used his time wisely, making an impression with an acoustic set that was well received by the audience. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Desure deftly navigated a nine-song set that featured songs from his new record, “Still Blue,” including the single, “Threads.” The stripped-down setting gave Desure’s lyrics a chance to shine, particularly on “Cinderella” and a song written for the singer’s hometown of “Los Angeles.” With a guitar and harmonica, Desure’s sound passed for a certain New Jersey singer, and the indie artist endeared himself to the New Jersey audience with a sweet version of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra Create ‘Strange Magic’ at New York City Farewell Gig

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

When Electric Light Orchestra made their Madison Square Garden debut on Feb. 11, 1977, they were near the zenith of their popularity due to a string of hits over the previous couple of years that included “Livin’ Thing,” “Rockaria!,” “Do Ya,” “Strange Magic,” and “Evil Woman.” But most critics were underwhelmed. “A typical ELO tune consists of doggerel affixed to a big, fat melody and repeated over and over again,” New York Times critic John Rockwell observed in his writeup of the show. “It’s all a little boring (to this listener; the crowd loved it) but it’s hardly offensive. And it’s sold a lot of concert tickets, singles and albums.”

This is a very different ELO than the one that played MSG back in 1977. They are now billed as Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra to differentiate themselves from bogus spin-off projects like ELO Part II and the Orchestra. Keyboardist Richard Tandy was the sole remaining member of the original band that Lynne brought back when he revived the ELO name back in 2014, but health problems forced Tandy off the road in 2016, and he died earlier this year. His absence was deeply felt.

Editor’s picks

The 100 best tv episodes of all time, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

The excellent band he assembled for this tour, including bassist Lee Pomeroy, guitarists Milton McDonald and Mike Stevens, keyboardist Marcus Byrne, drummer Donavan Hepburn, and a three-piece string section, made up for any deficiencies on Lynne’s part. They recreated the sound of the original ELO records with stunning precision, perfectly nailing every tiny intricacy. They also fleshed out Lynne’s vocals when he needed a little help.

It was the sole selection of the night from the group’s post-reunion catalog. The rest of the show was a journey through ELO’s most beloved songs from their heyday, beginning with “Evil Woman,” and continuing with “Do Ya,” originally recorded by Lynne’s Sixties band the Move before he made it even bigger with ELO. “Showdown” was a chance for violinist Jessie Murphy and cellists Jess Cox and Joe Webb to show off their chops, and background vocalists Melanie Lewis-McDonald and Iain Hornal to hit the highest of high notes on the “and it’s raining all over the world” segment.

Jeff lynne's electric light orchestra announce over and out farewell tour, morgan wade's 'suspicious minds' cover is like elvis fronting elo.

Big hits “Livin’ Thing,” “Turn to Stone,” and set closer “Don’t Bring Me Down” got the biggest crowd reaction of the night, but the band also broke out “Shine a Little Love” “Fire on High,” and “Steppin’ Out” for the hardcores. They wrapped up with “Mr. Blue Sky” as the sole encore. It was just one of their many hits back in the Seventies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced it to a new generation in recent years, and it has become one of their signature tunes.

Lynne had an enormously successful career as a producer once he folded up ELO, but his old band largely faded from memory in the Nineties and early 2000s. When Lynne initially attempted to revive the brand in 2001 for a North American arena tour, it was cancelled due to very low ticket sales before they could play a single public show. “Who is your favorite Traveling Wilbury?” Homer asked Lisa on a 2003 episode of The Simpsons . “Is it Jeff Lynne?”

It’s easy to be cynical about a farewell tour, since roughly 90 percent of them are just a ploy to fill seats and jack up ticket prices. But this one feels like the real deal. There are fan grumblings about the length of the show at just 90 minutes, Lynne’s lack of lead guitar work, and the focus on hits over anything the group created over the past decade. But this is a well-deserved victory lap for a true pop genius, and a gift for fans to take a ride on his spaceship one last time.

Jeff Lynne's ELO at Madison Square Garden, Sept. 16, 2024.

The ELO spaceship hovered over the skies of New York City for the last time.

The legendary British band led by its driving force, Jeff Lynne, performed two consecutive nights this past Monday and Tuesday at Madison Square Garden for its farewell tour billed as ‘Over and Out.’ Both shows provided an opportunity for older and younger fans to hear the classics live from Lynne and company for the last time.

In the last 10 years, Lynne – the sole member of the original Electric Light Orchestra lineup – had resumed live performances under the ELO banner after decades of working in the recording studio as a producer for the likes of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, the Beatles, Bryan Adams and Regina Spektor. During that period, as it had been in the 1970s when the band was fully active, ELO’s music has become ubiquitous not only on radio and streaming platforms but also in movies and commercials–a testament to the genius of Lynne as the group’s singer, songwriter and producer.

Monday’s show kicked off with the driving rocker “One More Time,” from the 2019’s From Out of Nowhere , the most ‘newest’ ELO song in the set. From there on, the evening was a brilliant career-spanning overview spotlighting ELO’s imperial phase (1970-1980) — from the first band’s debut single “10538 Overture” to “All Over the World” from the Xanadu soundtrack. For nearly two hours, it was hit after hit: “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” “Telephone Line,” “Turn to Stone,” “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Evil Woman,” “Strange Magic” and more.

For this particular tour, the setlist offered a few deep cuts that hadn’t been performed live at least in many years, such as the dreamy “Steppin’ Out” (from 1977’s Out of Blue ) and a snippet of the explosive and dramatic instrumental “Fire on High” (off of 1975’s Face the Music ).

As he did in the recording studio, Lynne pulled out all the stops in the live presentation of ELO’s music that featured a large cast of supporting players – including a three-piece string section–who all rose to the challenge. Aside from Lynne and the band’s spot-on performances of the hits, the show was a stunning visual display with dazzling stage lights, lasers and, of course, the iconic ELO spaceship.

The show at the Garden fittingly ended with “Mr. Blue Sky,” which has over the years become sort of ELO’s signature song. It was the exclamation point to an entertaining evening and a memorable goodbye to the band as a live entity.
