Dark: How Time Travel Works in the Netflix Series

Netflix's Dark is heavily focused on time travel across three eras: 1953, 1986 and 2019. Here's how all of those temporal trips are possible.

Netflix's German sci-fi drama Dark relies on the mind-bending concept, "The beginning is the end, and the end is the beginning," a mantra that permeates the series as it focuses on how time travel has affected the small town of Winden. Season 1 kicks into high gear in 2019 with a kid, Mikkel, going missing at a cave in the nearby woods, leading to the mysterious Stranger offering clues to Jonas -- one of the teens involved in the incident -- to solve the case.

What ensues is Jonas discovering key families in Winden have been part of a closed time loop, all tied back to the suicide of Michael (Jonas' father), months before Mikkel's disappearance. With the Stranger's guidance, he decides to harness the temporal ability of the cave to rescue Mikkel, figure out his own past and set things right. However, there are a few other time travel methods in the show, so let's break them all down in detail.

THE TEMPORAL CAVE

The main plot tool for time travel is, as mentioned, this haunting cave in Winden's forest. The Winden Nuclear Facility covered up a disaster in 1986, in which a leak spewed radiation that affected the main tunnel connecting the compound to the cave. As a result of the unique nuclear material the Germans were experimenting on in the wake of Chernobyl, a wormhole was inadvertently created in the cave.

RELATED: Dark: The Apocalypse Can't Be Stopped in Season 2 Trailer

Certain mini-tunnels in the cave turned into "doors" that led to different timelines. However, each passageway offered the user the ability to travel forward or backward 33 years in time according to which one he/she took. The show hints this is also linked to a cosmic alignment that has supernatural ties to numbers such as "33" and "66," figures the series' occultists believe have a deeper meaning as to why folks can time-slide.

The entire cave becomes active every 33 years when the same stars align, which means the cave is rendered inert after this period. To traverse these pathways, users like Jonas and the Stranger have created a network of strings to guide them along their desired route. In the season finale, these secrets were revealed by the Stranger, who turned out to be Jonas from a dystopian future. He had to provide insight to his younger self on how the cave worked before plunging the teen forward to 2052, putting him on the path to becoming this Stranger.

THE TIME BOX

The Stranger's main mode of time-sliding, however, comes via the Box, although it's not clarified if this Box can be activated at any time or if it's just during the activity period of the cave. As for its design, it basically looks like the inside of a clock with old-school gears. We first get insight into its inner-workings when the Stranger travels to meet H.G. Tannhaus, a clockmaker and engineer in 1953, and leaves him with the initial blueprints. At this point, the unsuspecting Tannhaus is caught off-guard by news he'll be the one to design the Box.

RELATED:  Dark: Jonas Searches For The Beginning in Season 2 Teaser

Using this knowledge, Tannhaus is able to perfect his old schematics and create the Box, which the Stranger will then get in the future, thus firming up the show's closed loop. Tannhaus also gets another version of the Box from Claudia (an old lady time-traveling with a Box just like the Stranger) so he can complete his design, which of course, is passed down to her years later as well. Tannhaus also receives a copy of "A Journey Through Time" from the Stranger -- a book he wrote decades later, which also guides him in finalizing this device. In other words, he gets his  book from the future to help him with his Box in the past.

To complete the first working design of the Box, Tannhaus also used a cell phone brought from the future by Mikkel's dad, Ulrich, who used the cave in 2019 to try to find his kid, not realizing he was going to get stuck in 1953. The electromagnetic field from the phone, and lastly, radioactive material Claudia left with Tannhaus from 2019, would allow the clockmaker to create this portable wormhole generator. As for how it operates, it sucks you up into a black hole and transports you to wherever you set the timer in accordance with the 33-year rule. In short, everything Tannhaus would use to make this Box work in the past was based on material brought to him from the future.

NOAH'S 'ARK'

The main antagonist in Season 1 is Noah, the head priest of a mysterious occult group. He's the reason kids have gone missing from Winden in the past and why their dead bodies are popping up over three eras (1953, 1986 and 2019) near the cave. It turns out in 1986 he began using a torture chamber-esque time machine, strapping kids into it to conduct experiments in order to see how they'd traverse the timestream.

Sadly, this burnt their eyes out and threw their corpses through the temporal gateways uncontrollably, leaving Noah to log data he simply didn't understand because of his lack of a scientific background. However, he appears in all the timelines without having aged a day so it could be that he learned how to use the machine on himself, or secretly got his hands on a separate Box.

RELATED:  Netflix's I Am Mother Introduces An A.I. Version of Thanos

That said, we never really see how the technical aspects of the chamber function. It's hinted, though, that Noah's machine could be mystically powered as there's no radioactive fuel opening up a wormhole. Given the biblical passages tattooed on his back, and from his own beliefs about heaven and hell, it could be that his arcane machine actually uses the souls of children as its temporal fuel.

Created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, Dark stars Oliver Masucci, Karoline Eichhorn and Jördis Triebel. Season 2 arrives Friday on Netflix.

The past, present and future are all connected and affect each other. Whether it is possible to change the future through changing the past is unclear, but appears to be impossible.

Seemingly, changes to the past made through time travel are already accounted for in the future and thus, it is impossible to change the future. This means that whatever happens has already happened. Examples:

  • Ulrich traveled from 2019 to 1953 and tried to kill young Helge to prevent the future abduction of children, but only caused the injuries to his face which Helge "already" had in the future.
  • Jonas traveled from 1921 to 2019 to prevent his father 's suicide, only to be the trigger of the tragedy.
  • Mikkel traveled from 2019 to 1986 , a change in the past which has already happened since his adult self existed during the 2019.

On the other hand, some characters, like Noah , Claudia and Jonas , go to great lengths to ensure that every step will be repeated exactly as it was before, implying that things would change without their intervention and thus, changes to the past affect the future. However, they might have other motives than keeping the timeline consistent. Examples:

  • Claudia instructed Tronte and Peter to place Mads' body in the forest where it would be found by the police.
  • Future Jonas prevented his younger self from bringing Mikkel (his future father) back from 1986 to 2019 , as he believed that doing so would erase his own existence.
  • Future Jonas did not release his younger self from the bunker when he was kidnapped by Noah and Helge ,

A misconception of the series is, time travel is only possible between points in time that are exactly 33 years apart. There are few examples where this is not the case, but they are normally between 33 year increments:

  • Old Helge travels from 2019 to 1986, via the cave wormhole right passage...33 years earlier
  • Ulrich travels from 2019 to 1953, via the cave wormhole left passage...66 years earlier
  • The teens use it to go from 2020 to 1987 bus stop...33 years earlier
  • Hannah steals the apparatus and goes from 2020 to 1954 (presumably via a double hop)...66 years earlier
  • Jonas, Magnus, Bartosz, and Franziska go from 2020 to 1888 (by accident) ... 132 years earlier
  • Peter witnesses Mads from 1986 Chair through a rift in the 2019 bunker...33 years later
  • Erik & Yasin from 1986 Chair through a rift in the 1953 bunker...33 years earlier
  • Young Helge is transported from 1953 to 1986...33 years later
  • Jonas is transported from 1986 to 2052...66 years later
  • Jonas in transported to 1921...132 years earlier
  • Charlotte and Elisabeth are transported to 2041... 12 years earlier**
  • Silja is transported to 1890 ... 163 years earlier**
  • Jonas is transported to 2019... 98 years later**
  • Teen Noah is transported to 2020...99 years later
  • Adam is transported to 2020...99 years later
  • Adam transports Young Silja from 1911 to 2041 ... 130 years later**
  • Charlotte is transported from 2020 to 2053
  • Martha is transported from June 27, 2020 to September 21, 1888 ... 131 years and a few months earlier**
  • Martha is transported from September 23, 1888 to September 23, 2053 ... 165 years later
  • Martha (as Eva) transports Hannah and Young Silja from 1993 to 1911 ... 82 years earlier**
  • Jonas and Martha are transported from November 6, 2019 to November 6, 2052 ... 33 years later
  • Ulrich is transported from November 8, 2019 to November 8, 1986 ... 33 years earlier

Methods [ ]

Season 1 [ ], wormhole or "passage" in caves [ ].

A wormhole in the Winden Caves opened during an incident in the Winden Nuclear Power Plant in the summer of 1986 . A man-made passage behind a heavy metal door created by Sic Mundus , connects three points in time 33 years apart: 1953 , 1986 , & 2019 .

Cave Doors

All other known methods of time travel utilize the same method of the original wormhole . Although it seems Mikkel Nielsen get transported 33 years into the past outside the caves while running away, actually it was a younger Jonas back from 2053 via 1921 who took him to the passage in Winden Caves after he was lost, as revealed by Michael Kahnwald (older Mikkel) later in Season 2 . Similar thing happened with Claudia Tiedemann 's dog Gretchen .

Bunker Chair (Apparatus Alpha) [ ]

The Chair was a prototype time machine, built in the Bunker behind the Doppler Shack by Noah & Helge in 1986 .

Dark 1x01 - Erik in the chair

Apparatus / Clockwork Box [ ]

Using the prototypes of the Bunker Chair, a portable device was created by H.G. Tannhaus with plans given to him by Claudia . Originally seen in use by The Stranger at the end of Season 1 and used by several people in Season 2 . The Apparatus requires the use of the "God Particle," found in the nuclear waste barrels from 1986, and can only be triggered by an electromagnetic impulse, such as a cell phone.

Bunker Portal [ ]

In 2019 while Peter is in the bunker seeking solitude and reciting the serenity prayer , Mads falls through a time portal . This portal is the exit point of the wormhole created by the Bunker Chair in 1986.

Jonas is in the 1986 Bunker after being kidnapped by Helge and Noah . Young Helge is in the 1953 bunker after being bashed by Ulrich . When The Stranger activates the apparatus in attempts to close the wormhole at the end of Season 1 , a time portal opens in the bunker . Jonas and Helge touch and Jonas is transported to 2052 and Helge to 1986 .

1x10 0072 AcrossTime

Season 2 [ ]

Bunker chair 2.0 (apparatus beta) [ ].

Noah sends Helge back to 1953 after he has healed from being bashed by Ulrich . The Chair now has cylindrical doors that open and close around the traveler, as well as the ability to use a small amount of the "God Particle" from the 1986 nuclear incident. This removes the need for the device to operate directly over the wormhole in the tunnels, and brings it one iterative step close to becoming the Apparatus, which can be operated from anywhere.

Nuclear Plant - God Particle (2053) [ ]

Jonas has to find fuel for the equipment to stabilize the God Particle or Wormhole prior to travelling to 1921 .

Other Martha's Trans-Dimensional Orb [ ]

clockwork orb is used at the end of Season 2 by Martha and Jonas to escape the apocalypse . Since Martha states that she is from another world, it is assumed that this device bridges worlds, and not time periods (at least not demonstrated as of yet).

The Creators of Netflix’s Dark on Why Writing Time-Travel Stories Is Like Playing Jazz

time travel quotes dark

Time travel seems to be popping up everywhere in the culture these days — this year alone, both the Avengers and the crew from Star Trek: Discovery have dabbled in temporal displacement — but if there’s one show that can lay claim to taking a really deep and philosophical dive into an idea that has been around since Mark Twain sent a Yankee to King Arthur’s Court, it’s Dark . Netflix’s first-ever German-language original series started out in 2017 as a small-town supernatural murder mystery, featuring moody teenagers, a bunch of missing kids, police officers struggling with domestic problems, and lots of drone footage of foggy forests. Then the show’s hero, 16-year-old emo kid Jonas, discovered that in his hometown of Winden someone is experimenting with a time machine, and things got really complicated.

Now Dark is back with a second season that weaves together stories from the present, the 1980s, the 1950s, the 1920s, and even the future. In the eight new episodes, head writer Jantje Friese and her partner, director Baran Bo Odar, provide answers to first-season questions both metaphysical and mundane — and then raise even more. So on a hot Berlin summer day, Vulture sat down with both of them at the city’s Soho House to talk about how writing time-travel stories is like playing jazz, and why free will is nothing but an illusion.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Dark has become this multidimensional, nonlinear narrative, with lots of paradoxical situations and story loops. While writing the second season, how often did you get confused with all this mind-bending time travel and multiple versions of Jonas?

Jantje Friese: It’s more confusing with the props than with the characters. Because once you set up a character, once you know their history, where they come from and what they long for, then they basically just move through the world by themselves. But props? Oh my god …

Baran Bo Odar : It’s the little things that cause confusion, like the time machine, the apparatus they use: Which version of the machine is with which character at what point in time? The thing is, it’s only one machine, it just comes with different patina levels. Sometimes it’s older or younger or broken, but it’s only one machine. And that’s where people get confused. I remember many, many discussions with actors that were like, “But no, aren’t there like three machines?” No, it’s the same machine! But it got easier, we basically created a code with season one, a kind of language so it’s way easier to talk about the storyline and different timelines now.

Once you realize that we are telling a story in a world where the timeline isn’t linear, once you keep that in your head, then you understand that there is only one time machine, just a different version. It’s almost like jazz: Once you know that this is not a typical pop song where you have chorus, verse, chorus, verse, but that’s it’s more like this jam session thing, then a jazz player doesn’t find it complex anymore. It’s just another language.

So it’s more of an intuitive process? I would have imagined you sitting in your office with a lot of Post-Its all over the wall and a timeline of all the different connections.

Jantje Friese : We actually found out, and this was new to me: The more stuff you hang up on the wall, the less people look at it. And the less they understand. In season one, we had a lot of stuff hanging there, but then we took it down and tried to concentrate on the basic plot points. We get this question a lot, people imagining we have Post-Its everywhere. But that doesn’t help, we tried. The more complex you get in the show, the easier you have to get in the writer’s room.

I remember when Rian Johnson made Looper, he used to discuss every single alleged plot hole on Twitter, like it was a matter of honor to defend the consistency of his story. Do you find yourself engaging with fans who think they found plot holes?

Jantje Friese : We very strongly feel that art should not be explained. As long as we understand and know the logic behind it and we don’t fool ourselves, we’re fine. And maybe it will take time for some people to understand why something isn’t a plot hole after all. I think discussing such things takes the mystery away, and it’s supposed to be an adventure. You are supposed to wrap your head around it and try to figure out how this works. And if you need secondary literature — great!

Baran Bo Odar : We read a lot of comments, of course. And some comments we just don’t understand, and then I do wish to write a reply. There’s this question we get a lot: Why is Noah not aging? There was this theory that he was the devil, something supernatural. And I am always like: We are doing a time-travel show! He might time travel and be in different timelines, so why should he age?

Jantje Friese : It’s like I said: We need to know what’s happening.

Baran Bo Odar : But of course there are plot holes.

Jantje Friese : Which ones, please?

Baran Bo Odar : There will be. One day we’ll find one.

Jantje Friese : So far I think we’re doing okay.

Are you saying there always have to be some kind of plot holes because otherwise such a show couldn’t work as a piece of art? Or are you just worried that you missed something?

Baran Bo Odar : The second thing. There will be something we have missed. There must be.

Jantje Friese : I think we will manage to avoid that. We’ll find a way.

As a viewer, at some point you feel overwhelmed by all those logic puzzles and timelines. And that’s exactly the moment, two thirds into the second season, when you stop jumping from timeline to timeline and you have this nice, warm episode that takes us back to the start. For the length of an episode, the show is about teenagers and their families again. Was that a deliberate decision to give viewers a pause from the complex narrative?

Jantje Friese : I always think that every season should be like a musical piece, and you should have a bridge part before you get to the climax, and episode six is this bridge. I just like the rhythm of that.

Baran Bo Odar : Though the episode still answers and raises a lot of big questions!

Absolutely, the last ten minutes are quite central to the time-travel story. There’s this anecdote that in the final season of Breaking Bad , the writers started with this flash-forward where you see Walter White with this big machine gun and then they just said to themselves, as a challenge —

Jantje Friese : “How do we get there?”

Yes. “Let’s see how we get the story to this point.” I thought about that when I was watching your show. You always know where your character ends up, because we’ve already met their future selves. Isn’t that a whole different way of storytelling?

Jantje Friese : People always think that writing is like architecture, that you build blocks and in the end you have a house. They way I approach writing is that it’s like archeology: The house is there, under the sand, you just have to uncover it. First of all, that makes it psychologically much easier, because you don’t have to do anything except dusting off sand, and that’s easy to do! And then it’s exactly what you have said: Something is already there and you just have to find a way for it to emerge. It actually gets quite easy if you already have seen the end of a character. You may have to dust off a little more here, and a little more there, and then you already see emerging the character’s end point that you already know about.

I find it almost paradoxical how much narrative energy you can draw from a premise that seems to prevent any kind of real suspense. Was that surprising to you?

Jantje Friese : It’s because human behavior is just such a strange thing. We could put a big sign before the show saying, “It’s a deterministic world! Nothing’s going to change!” And still you would root for all the characters and you would want them to somehow get out of this mess. Because we all want to believe that we have free will. And that’s just such a big, big, big energy driver. You just want it to happen. That’s why you still root for them, and you still wait for this world to change. And you know what? Maybe it will. We don’t know yet.

Baran Bo Odar : I don’t think so. It’s a deterministic world.

Jantje Friese : We’ll see.

Some of the time travelers certainly dream of “ending the cycle,” as they phrase it, of finding a loophole that gets them out of the time loop where everything keeps happening the way as it has always happened. Is this some irrational hope they stick to? Or is there a real possibility that they can prevent some of the horrible things that went down in Winden?

Jantje Friese : They think they know how this works but they don’t. They are still human. They will never be able to overcome their inner longings, their ego. They would need to completely crash their ego structure to get a grasp of it. We keep it ambivalent. And it can go both ways. But I won’t tell you whether there’s hope or a silver lining in the end.

Why do you think time travel is such a big thing in storytelling right now?

Jantje Friese : I think it’s two things. One thing is that people who make content now grew up with Back to the Future . And the other thing is that we live in uncertain times, we fear what is coming in the future and we have a nostalgic thing about the past, about going back to how it used to be before we had social media and internet, to better times. And time-travel stories somehow connect us in the present with our longing for the past and this fear for the future.

Baran Bo Odar : It’s really an interesting question. Why is time travel such a thing now? When Matrix came out, there were a lot of stories that questioned reality. “Is this real or not?” That’s now less of a question. Now time travel is more of a thing in pop culture. What does it stand for? Is it because we hope to change things we already have messed up, like climate change? I really don’t know.

Netflix’s 'Dark' All Time Travel Methods Explained: What Can Be Changed?

dark-series-new-time-machine-cave-ball-explained

N etflix series  Dark is indeed one of the great mind-benders shows  that has puzzled everyone with its unique and mysterious supernatural storyline. Therefore, it is understandable if you still haven’t figured out how time-travel works in the series.

Initially, when the series began its journey in the Winden town, audiences learned that the children from the town had been missing in an unfamiliar manner. As the series progressed, it was made known that the missing children had unknowingly made it to the past because of time-travel existing in that world.

But, even during the early season of the series, the time-travel events were confusing, especially the methods of time travel and what could & couldn't be changed through time-travel.

Time Travel Methods In The Series ‘Dark’

In the Netflix series Dark , we can witness several methods through which anyone can travel either in the past or future in the difference of 33-year increments. Here they are:

The Winden Cave or Wormhole

The Winden Cave from the Dark series consists of a wormhole that allows to timetravel

The Winden cave in the series Dark (Photo: Twitter)

The Winden cave, which is located beneath the Winden forest, is one of the portals through which time travel is possible.

The cave has several passages, but only one passage leads to three heavy human-made doors. And each door is inscribed with the Triquetra symbol and the text, "Sic Mundus Creatus Est." Plus, all of them connect three distinct points in time (33 years apart): 1953, 1986, & 2019.

The cave was made by the members of the Sic Mundus secret society in 1921. However, the tunnel or wormhole only got activated in 1986 after an incident in the Winden Nuclear Power Plant.

The event in the power plant spread nuclear substances and radiations in the cave tunnels. Later, nuclear substances and emissions combined to form a time-travel wormhole in the tunnels that can be reached by the distinct doors.

Travelers like Jonas Kahnwald , Ulrich Nielsen, Hannah Kahnwald, Kathrina Nielsen and Helge Doppler used the cave’s passage or wormhole to travel to their desired time.

The Time Travel Machine

The time machine from the Netflix series Dark

Another way to travel through time in the series Dark is with the help of the time travel machine, which is also known as apparatus or clockwork box.

The machines transport the travelers to the past or future with the 33-year rule, just like the tunnel in the cave. But the machine transports the travelers through a black round hole after it is switched on.

To function the machine, some amount of the ‘God Particle’ that is created from radioactive material of the Nuclear Power Plant is required. Also, the machine uses an electromagnetic field from the smartphone that was brought in the past by Ulrich to create a wormhole.

However, there were two instances in the series when the machine is used by Claudia with no view of Ulrich's cellphone. Fans still speculate if Claudia went to the past to borrow a cellphone or found some idea to use the machine without it.

The machine was created by a clockmaker and engineer named H.G. Tannhaus. However, the idea to make a time machine was not of Tannhaus himself. He makes it as per the blueprints given to him by powerplant manager Claudia Tiedemann—who had already time-traveled through all three timelines. After all, how would she have given the 2019's Ulrich cellphone and a reactive cesium isotope from 2019 Jonas to Tannhaus if she hadn't time-traveled back and forth?

In addition to Claudia's, Tannhaus also took references from his own book titled 'A Journey Through Time,' written by his future-self. The book was given to him by the Stranger (older Jonas).

We, first, get to see the machine work when the Stranger operates it to time travel at the end of Season 1. As the series progresses, we also see other characters using the machine to transport to their desired time.

The creation of this time machine is what led to the accidental creation of Jonas and alternate Martha's respective worlds.

Chair In The Bunker

The chair in the bunker from the series Dark that transport someone from one time to another

Helge Doppler from the series Dark tied in the chair built inside the bunker (Photo: Dark Fandom)

Unlike other methods of time travel, the chair in the bunker can cost someone’s life when taking someone to another time.

The chair in the bunker was an experimental time machine built by Noah and Helge Doppler behind the Doppler Shack in 1986. The terrifying chair comprised ankle cuffs, straps, electric wires, and a wide metal ring at head height. Meanwhile, the bunker was decorated like a child’s bedroom.

To experiment on time-travel with the help of chair-like-machine, Noah and Doppler, together, abducted children. They kidnapped Mads Nielsen, Erik Obendorf, and Yasin Friese.

However, the first phase of the experiments failed and resulted in the death of those abducted children. The dead bodies of those children, then, were transported to different years in the 33-year gap.

Six months later of the first try, Noah again performed the test after adding the entire body-sized metal ring around the chair,. This time, he experimented with the child version of Helge Doppler. Surprisingly, he succeeded in transporting Helge from the year 1987 to 1954 alive.

God Particle

The God Particle taking its shape in series Dark

The God Particle in the Netflix series Dark (Photo: 8FLiX/IMDb)

The God Particle is another method/way through which time-travel is shown possible in the series Dark.  Ther are two known god particles in the series: one got discovered in 2020 and the other got formed by Sic Mundus as a twin of the first one.

The original God Particle was created after the accident that occurred at the nuclear power plant in 1986.

The particle after its formation transcended time and space and connected them. In other words, it was the foundation of time-travel because every other method of time travel requires some amount of God Particle to function.

That might be the reason why the God Particle allowed one to travel to any time (past or future) without the 33-year barrier, unlike other methods that can only transport anyone within 33-years (either in past or future).

Alternate World’s Time Machine

The time machine from the alternate world in the series Dark

The round-shaped time machine from the alternate world in the series Dark (Photo: Twitter)

Before the final scene of the second season, no one had an idea about the existence of an alternate (parallel) world. And with the alternate world came a unique round-sized time machine built in the alternate world.

The alternate world’s time machine was so advanced that it not just transported to the various time but also could travel the characters from one parallel world to another.

What Can Be Changed Through Time-Travel On 'Dark'?

There are thousands and thousands of theories related to the possibilities and non-possibilities of time-travel in the world. But no one has cracked the exact way or explored how the time travel phenomenon precisely affects time and space.

So, everything we know about time travel and the possible changes we can make by traveling in our past or future is only through popular theories or movies and shows.

Here are some popular theories that could explain time-travel properly.

Grandfather Paradox

There is a popular theory named Grandfather Paradox that states if a person went back in time to kill his/her grandfather, the individual will not ever be born.

However, if the person was never born in the first place, the individual cannot go back in time to perform the killing. So, for the person to be born, the individual's grandfather needs to be alive in the past. Hence, even if someone tries, the past cannot be changed.

Similar to the theory, the series Dark which revolved around the story of time travel showed us what the characters could do and couldn't do when they travel through time. The series also makes the audiences very clear that the time-travelers cannot change the events in the past if the future of that event already exists.

For instance, when Ulrich tried to kill the child version of Helge Doppler in the series, he failed to do so because a healthy and alive Helge already existed in the future. So, even when Ulrich hit Helge with a big old rock using his full force after traveling to the past, he simply couldn't kill him. In the end, he only managed to make permanent scars on Helge's face.

Likewise, some impact or changes can be made in the past. And those changes made in the past by any character through time travel are already accounted for in the future. This idea makes it impossible to change the future. What that means is that whatever happens in the past has already happened in the future.

A Reddit user named BaaaaL44 explained this situation correctly in one of his explanation posts about time-travel in the series Dark.

Imagine that you go back in time, and buy a toy car to your childhood self. Then, you go back to your own timeline, and while cleaning the house, you happen upon the very same toy car from your childhood. That's right, the car was always yours, as you received it from the future self when you were a kid. The toy car did not mysteriously appear in your closed once you returned to your own timeline. You are not seeing an "altered" timeline, influenced by your past actions (like in Butterfly Effect), the car was always there, and if you cared to remember before going back to the past, you would have recalled a strange guy going up to you when you were a kid, and giving you a toy car.

The characters like Jonas, Claudia, and Ulrich, in the series Dark , who frequently traveled to their past and future also intended to change their past so that they normalized everything in their original timeline. But no one succeeded in doing so.

Well, the theory and explanation can get as long as we stretch it. But what we need to understand, before we conclude, is that even if time travel is possible, the events that have had already occurred cannot be changed - at least, no one has a proven formula so far to change the past.

This concept is what perhaps may explain the show's nostalgic ending. After Martha and Jonas save the Tanenhaus family from the possible accident, they were shown non-existent in the original world. But if we take into account the "Grandfather Paradox," we could say that the specific action from Martha and Jonas to change the past of Tanenhaus family could open yet another time loop.

Are the shows creator hinting to such a scenario by showing Jonas-like yellow raincoat during the final scene of the show?

Search For God

Search For God

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Do you feel alone right now?

Donnie : Oh, I don't know. I mean, I'd like to believe I'm not, but I just... I've just never seen any proof, so I... I just don't debate it anymore, you know? It's like I could spend my whole life debating it over and over again, weighing the pros and cons. And in the end, I still wouldn't have any proof. So I just... I just don't debate it anymore. It's absurd.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : The search for God is absurd?

Donnie : It is if everyone dies alone.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Does that scare you?

Donnie : I don't want to be alone.

One Day

Donnie : One day it will be better for you.

Dies Alone

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Donnie, what did Roberta Sparrow say to you?

Donnie : She said that every living creature on Earth dies alone.

Deny Everything Else

Deny Everything Else

Donnie : Well, life isn't that simple. I mean, who cares if Ling Ling returns the wallet and keeps the money? It has nothing to do with either fear or love.

Kitty Farmer : Fear and love are the deepest of human emotions.

Donnie : Okay. But you're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here, like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can't just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else.

Breathe A Sigh Of Relief

Breathe A Sigh Of Relief

Donnie : I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Superhero Or Something

Superhero Or Something

Gretchen : "Donnie Darko." What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something.

Donnie : What makes you think I'm not?

Stupid Man Suit

Stupid Man Suit

Donnie : Why are you wearing that stupid bunny suit?

Frank : Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Really Afraid

Really Afraid

Jim Cunningham : Son... Do you see this?

Donnie : Right?

Jim Cunningham : This is an anger prisoner. A textbook example.

Donnie : Anger prisoner.

Jim Cunningham : Do you see the fear, people? This boy is scared to death of the truth. Son, it breaks my heart to say this, but I believe you are a very troubled and confused young man. I believe you are searching for the answers in all the wrong places.

Donnie : You're right, actually. I am pretty... I'm pretty troubled and I'm pretty confused, but I... And I'm afraid. Really, really afraid. Really afraid. But I-I think you're the f*cking Antichrist.

What's The Point Of Living

What's The Point Of Living

Donnie : First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario - It just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants. That's what's so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. What's the point of living... if you don't have a d*ck?

Ronald Fisher : Damn it, Donnie. Why do you gotta get so smart on us?

A Compliment

A Compliment

Gretchen : You're weird.

Donnie : Sorry.

Gretchen : No, that was a compliment.

Suck A F*ck

Suck A F*ck

Donnie : You're such a f*ck-a**!

Rose Darko : Please.

Elizabeth : What? Did you just call me a "f*ck-a**"?

Rose Darko : Elizabeth, that's enough.

Elizabeth : You can go suck a f*ck.

Donnie : Oh, please, tell me, Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a f*ck?

Elizabeth : You want me to tell you?

Donnie : Please, tell me.

Rose Darko : We will not have this at the dinner table.

Donnie : (mouthing) I'm all ears!

Change Things

Change Things

Donnie : I was in jail once. I mean I accidentally burned down this house. It was abandoned, but still, I got held back in school and I can't drive until I'm 21. But I'm over all of that. I... I... I'm painting and stuff. Writing. I want to be a writer, or maybe a painter, I don't know, or maybe both. I'll write a book and draw the pictures. Then maybe people will understand me. I don't know, change things.

The Gusto You Can Muster

The Gusto You Can Muster

Jim Cunningham : Is that all the gusto you can muster?

A Jet Engine

A Jet Engine

Elizabeth : Do you remember that weird gym teacher Mrs. Farmer? - Yeah okay, well my brother told her to go shove a book up her a** today. And then my parents bought him all this new sh*t. - Yeah, I know. I wish a jet engine would fall on my room.

Why?

Frank : Twenty eight days, six hours, forty two minutes, twelve seconds. That is when the world will end.

Donnie : Why?

Imaginary

Donnie : I made a new friend.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Real or imaginary?

Donnie : Imaginary.

Dues Ex Machina

Dues Ex Machina

Seth Devlin : Did you call the f*cking cops?

Donnie : Deus ex machina.

Seth Devlin : What did you just say? What the f*ck did you just say?

Donnie : Our savior.

So Sorry

Donnie : What happened to your eye?

Frank : I'm so sorry.

Watch The Movie Screen

Watch The Movie Screen

Frank : I want you to watch the movie screen. There's something I want to show you.

You And Your Memories

You And Your Memories

Dr. Lilian Thurman : If the sky were to suddenly open up, there would be no law, there would be no rule. There would only be you and your memories.

That's Gross

That's Gross

(Dr. Lilian Thurman puts Donnie under hypnosis)

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Do you still think about girls a lot?

Donnie : Yeah.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : How are things going at school?

Donnie : I think about girls a lot.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : I asked you about school, Donnie.

Donnie : I think about f*cking a lot during school.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : What else do you think about during school?

Donnie : Married with Children.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Do you think about your family?

Donnie : I just turn down the volume and think about f*cking Christina Applegate.

Dr. Lilian Thurman : I asked you about your family, Donnie.

Donnie : No. I don't think about f*cking my family. That's gross.

An Atheist

Dr. Lilian Thurman : Donnie. An atheist is someone who denies altogether the existence of God. You're an agnostic. An agnostic is someone who believes that there can be no proof of the existence of God, but does not deny a possibility that God exists.

Anything I Want

Anything I Want

Donnie : How can you do that?

Frank : I can do anything I want. And so can you.

I'm Reading

I'm Reading

Donnie : I'm reading. Get out of my room

Beer

Ronald Fisher : Beer and p*ssy. That's all I need.

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

time travel quotes dark

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

time travel quotes dark

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd

time travel quotes dark

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

time travel quotes dark

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington

I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

time travel quotes dark

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

time travel quotes dark

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

time travel quotes dark

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

time travel quotes dark

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

time travel quotes dark

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Back To The Future’s 10 Biggest Mysteries That Still Need Answering Almost 40 Years Later

10 fascinating facts about the back to the future trilogy, back to the future: 10 things that still hold up today.

  • The best Back to the Future quotes have guaranteed the franchise a place in pop culture history.
  • Outstanding performances from Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown and Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly are a key reason many moments are so memorable.
  • Other characters like Biff Tannen have some great Back to the Future quotes, but the majority of the best lines come from Doc and Marty.

Back to the Future quotes have helped to ensure the trilogy's long-lasting legacy as one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time. All three movies took fun and unique approaches to the time-travel genre, creating a shared overall story remembered fondly decades later. The culture clash of 80s teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his eccentric genius friend, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), taking their time-traveling DeLorean to different time periods set up a comedic and thrilling adventure. While the visual elements of the three movies have become iconic, the best Back to the Future quotes have also become cemented in pop culture history.

The Back to the Future trilogy remains one of the few Hollywood franchises untouched by a remake or a reboot despite constant rumors of some continuation being in the works. Director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale have always maintained that as long as they have a say, the original trilogy will remain untouched and cemented in time. As a result, the best Back to the Future quotes remain as pristine as they were when they were first put out into the world almost 40 years ago.

All Back to the Future movies are available on Peacock Premium.

Back To The Future: All Three Movies, Ranked Worst To Best

Back to the Future has three movies of Marty McFly and Doc Brown's time-travelling antics, leading to a great cinematic trilogy, but which is best?

20 “This Is Heavy!”

Marty mcfly.

“ This is heavy ” is one of Marty McFly's catchphrases which he says throughout the Back to the Future trilogy whenever he’s stunned or confused. Given the high-stakes time-travel adventures he finds himself sucked into, it's not surprising that the quote comes up a lot. It also sets up a great joke in the first movie when Doc asks him about the turn of phrase: “ There’s that word again, ‘heavy.’ Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth’s gravitational pull? ”

There is a lot of humor about the 80s culture clashing with the 1950s setting. However, what makes this line so funny is that Doc Brown approaches it through a scientific mind and tries to make sense of what it would mean for the future. Though it was contemporary slang, it's gained an 80s throwback element that's made it remain one of the best Back to the Future quotes.

19 “Silence, Earthling! My Name Is Darth Vader. I Am An Extraterrestrial From The Planet Vulcan!”

It is a bit like Marty has a superpower, knowing things that no one else does, and he is even able to use the most popular cultural aspects of the 1980s to get things done.

While Marty is very much a fish out of water when he finds himself back in the 1950s, the first Back to the Future movie has a lot of fun with him using the future to his advantage. It is a bit like Marty has a superpower, knowing things that no one else does , and he is even able to use the most popular cultural aspects of the 1980s to get things done.

When he needs to put some fear into his timid father back in 1955, Marty mixes together some Star Wars and Star Trek while pretending to be an alien. While it is an effective plan, it is funny to think about George's reaction when these franchises hit pop culture in a couple of decades. It also shows Marty's teenage mind dealing with this situation by just grabbing from every sci-fi property he can think of.

18 “I Hate Manure!”

Biff tannen.

Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) makes for a terrific villain in the first movie with him being the kind of easily detestable character that audiences love to see get what he deserves. The first humiliation comes when Marty meets the Bully in 1955. Biff ends up covered in manure as he chases Marty through the streets of Hill Valley several times in the first Back to the Future . The first time is as Biff and his friends try to run him down in Biff’s car.

It is one of the recurring gags that comes back in each of the sequels, delivering some much-needed comeuppance to the trilogy's main villain. It is hard to imagine a more disgusting and humiliating punishment, and it is a joy to see Biff, in any of his incarnations, get his mouthful of manure while voicing his displeasure at the situation.

17 “Jesus, Didn’t That Guy Ever Have Hair?”

Though the first movie doesn't spend too much time in the 80s, it does include a quintessential 80s teen movie character with the harsh and domineering authority figure. In 1985, Marty is given a hard time at school by his teacher, Mr. Strickland (James Tolkan). Strickland is always getting after Marty for not paying attention to his teachers or showing up to class on time. When he travels back to 1955 and goes to the school where his teenage parent attends, he sees a younger Mr. Strickland.

Hilariously, Strickland looks almost exactly the same in the 1950s as he would do in the 1980s. Marty cracks, “ Jesus, didn’t that guy ever have hair? ” What makes the moment even funnier is that it is never explained how Strickland has seemingly always been an old bald man.

Back To The Future: All 8 Timelines In The Movies Explained

Back to the Future's classic time travel trilogy has been delighting viewers for decades. Here's a breakdown of all eight timelines in the movies.

16 "Shark Still Looks Fake."

There are a lot of fun elements to see Marty explore in the future when Back to the Future: Part II takes him to 2015. However, one of the best ones is an in-joke aimed at Back to the Future producer Steven Spielberg and one of his most popular movies. Marty sees an advertisement for Jaws 19 with a 3D shark coming right at him.

While it takes him by surprise at first, Marty then makes a joke about how even after all these years, the killer shark still looks fake. The Back to the Future Jaws joke is a fun Easter egg and, thankfully, the shark movie franchise knew to quit at four movies. However, regardless of Marty's criticisms, there are many who think that the original shark in the first movie looks far more realistic than what was to come in the sequels.

15 “1.21 Gigawatts!?!”

Doc emmett brown.

When Marty arrives in 1955, he wastes no time tracking down a young Doc Brown to help him fix the time machine and return to the present day. At first, Doc is skeptical that the teenage boy who showed up on his doorstep is actually from the future, but as Marty explains the flux capacitor, Doc realizes he’s telling the truth.

When Marty tells Doc that the DeLorean time machine requires 1.21 gigawatts of power to operate, Doc is horrified: “ 1.21 gigawatts!?! ” It's Lloyd's delivery of the Back to the Future quote that makes it memorable with him leaping into a characteristically animated response. Lloyd is able to make Doc a true eccentric without going too over the top. As much fun as Marty's misadventures are with his young parents, seeing these moments in which Doc Brown excitedly tangles with the science are some of the most entertaining moments.

14 “If My Calculations Are Correct, When This Baby Hits 88 Miles Per Hour, You're Gonna See Some Serious S***.”

Wild-eyed scientist characters were quite commonplace in movies before Back to the Future , but Christopher Lloyd was the first to play a mad scientist who didn’t take everything so seriously . Doc Brown is deeply invested in his work and excited about the possibilities of what he can achieve. However, as he describes the experiment at hand as being “ some serious s***", it shows a charming fun side to the character.

The line is a perfect tease to put the viewers on the edge of their seats for what comes next. The audience is about to see the time machine in action for the first time, and it helps to build anticipation for the iconic moment . It also makes Doc Brown an instantly likable and relatable character despite being an eccentric genius and helps to explain why Marty would hang out with this old man.

13 “Why Don’t You Make Like A Tree And Get Outta Here?”

One of the main character traits of Biff Tannen is that he gets idioms wrong. While he might be intimidating in size, he is also a massive buffoon who cannot help but make a fool of himself. Instead of “ Make like a tree and leave ,” he says, “ Why don’t you make like a tree and get outta here? ” His total oblivious nature to his frequent mistakes is part of what makes Biff such a terrific comedy villain.

He leaves a lasting impression as he appears across all three movies, which is why he's the source of so many of the best Back to the Future quotes . The movies perfectly balance the fact that he can be a real threat to the heroes while allowing the audience to laugh at him for his dim-wittedness, which makes him another wildly fun character for this world.

Back to the Future may be decades old, but the time-traveling storylines still have several questions and mysteries that haven't been resolved.

12 "Why Do You Keep Calling Me Calvin?"

The awkward interactions between Marty and his own mother when he travels back to the 1950s make for some of the most memorable scenes in the first movie. This is especially true of their first meeting after Marty is hit by a car and taken to Lorraine's room to recuperate. Marty is understandably confused by the whole situation of him in his underwear in his mother's bedroom in the past, as she continually calls him Calvin. When asked why, she points out the name on his underwear, a reminder that Calvin Klein products weren't around in the 1950s .

Given that the 80s are so far into the past, it is interesting to look back on the movie and see how the 80s and the 50s differed so much.

It is a hilarious origin for Marty's Calvin identity in Back to the Future which lasts throughout the rest of the movie. Given that the 80s are so far into the past, it is interesting to look back on the movie and see how the 80s and the 50s differed so much. The idea of a company putting brand names on their underwear was a new concept in the 50s.

11 "It’s Leave, You Idiot! 'Make Like A Tree, and Leave.' You Sound Like A Damn Fool When You Say It Wrong."

Biff is Back to the Future' s villain throughout the trilogy, and he seems to get meaner and more detestable with each new installment in the franchise . Some of the best scenes with the character come from Back to the Future: Part II involving two versions of Biff interacting which shows that he is a bully to everyone, including himself. The sequel has Biff able to meet his past self and use him to alter their future.

However, even future Biff cannot stand his own stupidity, as past Biff uses his moronic insult " Why don’t you make like a tree and get outta here? " and the older Biff angrily corrects him. It is a funny idea of how embarrassing people would be to meet their younger selves and be confronted with how embarrassing they really were back in the day.

10 “Who’s Vice President, Jerry Lewis?”

Doc Brown is very careful not to know too much about the future as it could affect the past. However, while he is excited about all the possibilities, one tidbit of information that he learns just seems too ridiculous to take seriously. When Marty claims to be from 1985, 1955 Doc asks him, “ Tell me, Future Boy, who’s President of the United States in 1985? ” Marty lets him know that it is Ronald Reagan , leading to Doc's hilarious bewildered reaction to an actor being president and all the strange possibilities that implies.

The Back to the Future movies always have a lot of fun pointing out the absurdity of 80s culture as well as 50s living. Lloyd completely sells the incredulity in Doc's voice as the Back to the Future quote plays on the idea that a lot of things in the modern world would sound implausible to someone 30 years ago.

9 “I Guess You Guys Aren’t Ready For That Yet. But Your Kids Are Gonna Love It.”

Back to the Future set the template for time travel comedies. One thing that was in Back to the Future and has been in almost every time travel comedy made since then is the scene where the characters accidentally create a part of modern culture. While many movies have done it, none are as memorable as Back to the Future 's hilarious contribution.

At the end of Back to the Future , Marty plays Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and gets carried away with his guitar solo, adding a little too much 80s rock into the song. The moment is perfectly set up throughout the movie with Marty's dreams of being a rock star. However, instead of him getting a rapturous response from the audience, Marty's performance is met with stunned silence as Marty admits that the song might be ahead of their time .

Back to the Future is one of the most beloved trilogies of all time, but there are still many fascinating things to discover about the series.

8 "Chuck, It’s Marvin. Your Cousin, Marvin Berry. You Know That New Sound You’re Looking For? Well, Listen To This!"

Marvin berry.

While the 1950s students at the high school dance might not have understood what to do with the music that Marty was playing, it was enough to impress someone else. As Marty jams out on his guitar, one of the musicians backstage makes a phone call to his cousin Chuck Berry to let him hear the new sound .

The Back to the Future Chuck Berry paradox is a confusing one if thought about too much with the idea being that Berry was influenced by his own music, but it makes for a fun time-travel gag as Marty accidentally influences the musician who influenced him . It is one of those great time travel ideas that doesn't necessarily have to make sense when closely examining it, but that introduces a fun idea into the wild concept.

7 “Eastwood. Clint Eastwood.”

So, when he’s asked for his name, Marty says, “ Eastwood. Clint Eastwood .”

Back to the Future Part III switches up the formula in an interesting way as it sees Marty and Doc stuck in the Old West. Not only does the movie get to remain a fun time travel comedy, but it gets to have fun in the Western genre as well. Marty has no real understanding of the era other than the pop culture of his own time that's based on it. So, when he’s asked for his name, Marty says, “ Eastwood. Clint Eastwood .”

It's a similar gag to how everyone in 1955 knew him as Calvin Klein , but it also feeds into another reference that's set up in the previous film. During the climax of Part III , Marty steals an idea from Eastwood's famous Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars , as he takes the idea from the film playing on Biff's TV in Part II .

6 “Roads? Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Roads.”

While Back to the Future is often regarded as one of the best trilogies of all time , its ending was so perfect that it could have concluded there and still be incredibly satisfying. The final Back to the Future quote from the original movie sets up an enormous amount of excitement for a sequel back when the film was first released. As Doc prepares to take Marty and Jennifer off on another time-travel adventure, Marty suggests there isn't enough road to get up to the required 88 miles per hour.

Doc delivers this iconic closing line, which sets up the wonderful reveal of the DeLorean now able to fly. It is a great moment to end the movie , while also teasing all the exciting places the franchise can go from there. However, even if the sequel tease went unanswered, it is a brilliant and exciting final line.

5 "Your Future Is Whatever You Make It. So Make It A Good One, Both Of You."

Throughout his time-traveling adventures with Marty, Doc Brown has tried valiantly to protect the events of the past to ensure that nothing is altered. However, as the series reaches its conclusion, it becomes clear that he is becoming less and less concerned with those rules. By the end of Back to the Future: Part III , Doc has started a family and found happiness while Marty and Elizabeth's future is wide open.

Because of what they changed in the past, Doc assures them the future is unwritten. It is a fitting farewell, especially for the character of Doc Brown, who is willing to put things up to fate after living a life dictated by science and the search for certainty. While many would like to see Back to the Future 4 happen , this hopeful ending is quite pitch-perfect.

Robert Zemeckis' time-travel comedy Back to the Future is a movie that never gets old. But what exactly makes it a timeless classic?

4 “Nobody Calls Me Chicken.”

Every character has their Achilles’ heel, and Marty McFly’s is that as soon as someone calls him a “chicken,” he can’t back down . Even if he knows in his heart that the best thing for the fabric of the space-time continuum is for him to walk away from a situation, he simply can’t do it. Marty is not the tough-guy hero seen in other adventure franchises and finds himself in over his head in many instances.

Michael J. Fox sells this now-iconic Back to the Future quote, making Marty seem like someone who shouldn't be messed with. Marty is an easy character to cheer for and lines like this when he is willing to stand up for himself despite being against more intimidating characters just make him an even more likable hero in cinema history.

3 “It’s Your Kids, Marty! Something’s Gotta Be Done About Your Kids!”

Ending movies with cliffhangers that set up a sequel has become commonplace in big Hollywood franchises now, but few ever did it as effectively as Back to the Future . Just as things seem to be wrapped up nicely, Doc Brown arrives at Marty's driveway in the time machine, itching to get him back into more paradox-inducing high jinks. There is the added tease that Marty's girlfriend Jennifer has to tag along this time, as their children in the future are what is at stake.

However, part of the reason that it works and doesn't feel forced is that Doc gives Marty a very reasonable explanation for needing his help. The reveal of what it was that had gone with Marty's kids isn't until the beginning of Part II , but even if the sequel never did come, it is a fun promise that the time-travel adventures are far from over.

2 “Great Scott!”

Before he played Doc Brown in Back to the Future , Christopher Lloyd had become a star from appearing on the sitcom Taxi and from playing supporting characters in movies like the critically acclaimed masterpiece One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest . However, it was the role of Doc Brown that would come to truly define him as an actor. Though he would go onto other popular roles, he was beloved for his commitment to Doc Brown.

His performance is sometimes cartoonish, but there’s also a healthy balance of genuine emotion. Lloyd is a brilliant actor who has played a wide range of characters, but he cemented himself as an icon with this famous Back to the Future quote that serves as Doc's favorite exclamation, “ Great Scott! ” The amount that Lloyd puts into this line each time is a prime example of why his performance works so well.

1 “Wait A Minute, Doc. Are You Telling Me You Built A Time Machine... Out Of A DeLorean?”

Back to the Future has many strengths when it comes to the script, acting, and direction, but none of them matter more than the sense of wonder that the film is able to achieve using familiar scenarios and cultural iconography. That sense of wonder is created the second Marty McFly says, “ Wait a minute, Doc. Are you telling me you built a time machine...out of a DeLorean?”

Transforming the often-joked-about car into something entirely new kicks the time travel adventure off with such a fun and unique note. The fact that this is now the DeLorean's legacy is best remembered is a testament to the impact of the movie after all these years. The time machine was famously a refrigerator in an earlier draft of Back to the Future , and it just wouldn't have been the same.

Back to the Future

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown. In 1955, he meets his parents when they were his age, and must step in to make sure they wind up together before he gets back to 1985.

Donnie Darko

Donnie: I promise, that one day, everything's going to be better for you.

Donnie: First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village, but the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants. That's what's so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. What's the point of living if you don't have a dick?

Donnie: How can you do that?

Frank: I can do anything I want. And so can you.

Donnie: Do you want your sister to lose weight? Tell her to get off the couch, stop eating twinkies and maybe go out for field hockey. You know what? No one ever knows what they want to be when they grow up. You know it takes a little, little while to find that out, right, Jim? And you... yeah, you. Sick of some jerk shoving your head down the toilet? Well, you know what? Maybe... you should lift some weights, or uh, take a karate lesson and the next time he's tries to do it, you kick him in the balls.

Karen Pommeroy: It was as though this plan had been with him all his life, pondered through the seasons, now in his fifteenth year crystallized with the pain of puberty.

Donnie: I made a new friend today.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Real or imaginary?

Donnie: Imaginary.

Frank: 28 days... six hours... 42 minutes... 12 seconds. That... is when the world... will end.

Eddie: That damn airline better not f*** us on the shingle match.

Gretchen: You're weird.

Donnie: Sorry.

Gretchen: No, that was a compliment.

Karen Pommeroy: This could be the death of an entire way of life, the end of an era...

Donnie: Why should we care?

Karen Pommeroy: Because the rabbits are us, Donnie.

Donnie: Why should I mourn for a rabbit like he was human?

Karen Pommeroy: Are you saying that the death of one species is less tragic than another?

Donnie: Of course. The rabbit's not like us. It has no... keen look at something in the mirror, it has no history books, no photographs, no knowledge of sorrow or regret... I mean, I'm sorry, Miss Pommeroy, don't get me wrong; y'know, I like rabbits and all. They're cute and they're horny. And if you're cute and you're horny, then you're probably happy, in that you don't know who you are and why you're even alive. And you just wanna' have sex, as many times as possible, before you die... I mean, I just don't see the point in crying over a dead rabbit! Y'know, who... who never even feared death to begin with.

Donnie: Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?

Frank: Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?

Gretchen: Donnie Darko? What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something

Donnie: What makes you think I'm not?

Kitty Farmer: No. Duh is a product of fear.

Kitty Farmer: I'll tell you what he said. He asked me to forcibly insert the Life Line exercise card into my anus.

Roberta Sparrow: Every living creature on this earth dies alone.

Gretchen: ...what if you could go back in time, and take all those hours of pain and darkness and replace them with something better?

Donnie: You are such a f***ass.

Elizabeth: Did you just call me a f***ass? You can go suck a f***.

Donnie: Oh, please, tell me Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a f***?

Donnie: Frank, when's this gonna stop?

Frank: You should already know that.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: The search for God is absurd?

Donnie: It is if everyone dies alone.

Jim Cunningham: Son... DO YOU SEE THIS? This is an Anger Prisoner. A textbook example. DO YOU SEE THE FEAR, PEOPLE? This boy is scared to death of the truth. Son, it breaks my heart to say this, but I believe you are a very troubled and confused young man. I believe you are searching for the answers in all the wrong places...

Donnie: You're right, actually. I am pretty- I'm, I'm pretty troubled and I'm, I'm pretty confused. But I. . .and I'm afraid. Really, really afraid. Really afraid. But I... I... I think you're the f***ing Antichrist.

Kitty Farmer: Not only am I a teacher, but I am also the mother of a Middlesex child. Therefore, I am the only person here who transcends the parent-teacher bridge.

Gretchen: My mom had to get a restraining order against my step dad. He has emotional problems.

Donnie: Oh, I have those too. What kind does your step dad have?

Gretchen: He stabbed my mom four times in the chest.

Donnie: Oh.

Edward Darko: Tell 'em, George.

Samantha Darko: What's a f***ass?

Rose Darko: Do you even know who Graham Greene is?

Kitty Farmer: I think we've all seen Bonanza.

Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: I am not going to be able to continue this conversation

Donnie: Why?

Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: I could lose my job.

Cherita Chen: Chut up.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: If the sky were to suddenly open up, there would be no law, there would be no rule. There would only be you and your memories.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: If this world were to end, there would only be you... and him... and no one else.

Frank: Wake up, Donnie.

Prof. Kenneth Monnitoff: And did you stop and think that maybe infants need darkness? That maybe darkness is part of their natural development.

Gretchen: Some people are just born with tragedy in their blood.

Donnie: Well look, um... uh... you wanna go with me?

Gretchen: Where do you wanna go?

Donnie: No, I mean like go with me, like you know... like, that's what we call it here... going together...

Gretchen: Sure

Donnie: Ok-hey where're you going?

Gretchen: I'm going home.

Donnie: Well I-I, sorry I...

Gretchen: Donnie wait...

Donnie: I like you a lot...

Gretchen: I just want it to be... at a time when... it...

Donnie: When what?

Gretchen: When it reminds me just...

Donnie: When it reminds you of how beautiful the world can be?

Gretchen: Yeah...

Gretchen: and right now there's some fat guy over there staring at us.

Kitty Farmer: Okay, now girls... I want you to concentrate. Failure is not an option. And Bethany, if you feel the need to vomit up there... just swallow it.

Donnie: Ling Ling finds a wallet on the ground filled with money. She takes the wallet to the address on the driver's license but keeps the money inside the wallet.

Donnie: I-I'm sorry Mrs. Farmer. I don't get this.

Donnie: Life isn't that simple. I mean who cares if Ling Ling returns the wallet and keeps the money? It has nothing to do with either fear or love.

Kitty Farmer: Fear and love are the deepest of human emotions.

Donnie: Okay. But you're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here. Like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can't just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else!

Donnie: My parents didn't get me what I wanted for Christmas.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: What did you want?

Donnie: Hungry Hungry Hippos.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: And how did you feel, being denied these hungry, hungry hippos?

Donnie: Regret.

Karen Pommeroy: This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that Cellar Door is the most beautiful.

Elizabeth: I'm voting for Dukakis.

Donnie: I don't think about f***ing my family... that's gross.

Gretchen: Hey. What's going on?

David: Horrible accident. My neighbour... got killed.

Gretchen: What happened?

David: Got smooshed by a jet engine.

Gretchen: What was his name?

David: Donnie. Donnie Darko.

Gretchen: Hmm.

David: I feel bad for his family.

Gretchen: Yeah.

David: Did you know him?

Gretchen: No.

Seth Devlin: Did you f***ing call the cops?

Donnie: Deus ex machina...

Seth Devlin: What?

Donnie: Our saviour.

Donnie: You're such a f***-ass!

Rose Darko: Please.

Elizabeth: What? Did you just call me a "f***-ass"?

Rose Darko: Elizabeth, that's enough.

Elizabeth: You can go suck a f***!

Donnie: Oh, please, tell me, Elizabeth, how exactly does one suck a f***?

Elizabeth: You want me to tell you?

Donnie: Please, tell me.

Rose Darko: We will not have this at the dinner table. Stop!

Donnie: [Mouthing] I'm all ears!

Samantha: [After period of silence] What's a "f***-ass"?

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Do you still think about girls a lot?

Donnie: [under hypnosis] Yeah.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: How are things going at school?

Donnie: I think about girls a lot.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: I asked you about school, Donnie.

Donnie: I think about f***ing a lot during school.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: What else do you think about during school?

Donnie: Married... with Children.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: Do you think about your family?

Donnie: I just turn down the volume and think about f***ing Christina Applegate.

Dr. Lilian Thurman: I asked you about your family, Donnie.

Donnie: [chuckling] No. I don't think about f***ing my family. That's gross.

Sean Smith: Beer and p*ssy. That's all I need.

Ronald Fisher: Well we gotta find ourselves a Smurfette.

Sean Smith: Smurfette?

Ronald Fisher: Mmm-hmm [gulps beer]. Not some like tight-ass Middlesex chick, y'know? Like this cute little blonde that'll get down and dirty with the guys. Like Smurfette does.

Sean Smith: [nods agreement] Hmm.

Donnie: Smurfette doesn't f***.

Ronald Fisher: That's bullshit. Smurfette fucks all the other Smurfs. Why do you think Papa Smurf made her? It's because all the other Smurfs were getting too horny.

Sean Smith: No, no, no, not Vanity. I heard he was a homosexual.

Ronald Fisher: Okay well you know what then, she fucks them while Vanity watches, okay?

Sean Smith: Well what about Papa Smurf? I mean, he must get into all the action.

Ronald Fisher: Yeah. What he does: He films the gangbang, later on...he beats off to the tape.

Donnie: [earnestly] First of all: Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette - Gargamel did! She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gangbang scenario - Huh! I - it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual, th-they don't even have... reproductive organs under those little... white... pants. That's what's so illogical, y'know, about being a Smurf. Y'know what's the point of living... if you don't have a dick?

Sean Smith: [sighs] Dammit, Donnie, wh-why you gotta get so smart on us?

Donnie: [reading lifeline card] "Ling Ling finds a wallet on the ground filled with money. She takes the wallet to the address on the driver's license but keeps the money inside the wallet." [Scoffs] I'm... I'm sorry, Mrs. Farmer. I don't get this.

Kitty Farmer: What don't you get?

Donnie: Well, life isn't that simple. I mean, who cares if Ling Ling returns the wallet and keeps the money? It has nothing to do with either fear or love.

Donnie: Okay. But you're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here, like the whole spectrum of human emotion. You can't just lump everything into these two categories and then just deny everything else.

Donnie: Good morning.

Jim Cunningham: Good morning.

Donnie: Um... how much are they paying you to be here?

Jim Cunningham: Uh, excuse me? What is your name, son?

Donnie: Gerard.

Jim Cunningham: Gerald, I think you're afraid.

Donnie: Are you telling us this stuff so we can buy your book because, I gotta tell ya, if you are, that was some of the worst advice I ever heard.

Jim Cunningham: You see how sad this is-

Donnie: You want your sister to lose weight? Tell her to get off the couch, stop eating Twinkies and maybe go out for field hockey. You know what? No one ever knows what they want to be when they grow up. You know, it takes a little- little while to find that out. Right, Jim? And you. Yeah, you. Sick of some jerk shoving your head down the toilet? Well, you know what? Maybe you should lift some weights or, uh, take a karate lesson. And the next time he tries to do it, you kick him in the balls!

Jim Cunningham: [laughs] Son... do you see this?

Donnie: Right?

Jim Cunningham: This is an anger prisoner. A textbook example.

Donnie: Anger prisoner.

Jim Cunningham: Do you see the fear, people? This boy is scared to death of the truth. Son, it breaks my heart to say this, but I believe you are a very troubled and confused young man. I believe you are searching for the answers in all the wrong places.

Donnie: You're right, actually. I am pretty- I'm pretty troubled and I'm pretty confused, but I... And I'm afraid. Really, really afraid. Really afraid. But I- I think you're the f***ing Antichrist.

Kitty Farmer: Rose, I'm sure that you're aware of the horrible allegations against Jim Cunningham.

Rose Darko: I know. I saw it on TV. Something about a "kiddie porn dungeon."

Kitty Farmer: Please, please! Don't use those words! It's obviously some kind of conspiracy to destroy an innocent man. And I have taken it upon myself to spearhead the Jim Cunningham defense campaign. Rose, I have to appear at his arraignment tomorrow morning. And as you know, the girls are scheduled to leave for Los Angeles in the morning. Now, as their coach, I was the obvious choice to chaperone them on their trip, but...

Rose Darko: But now, you can't go.

Kitty Farmer: Yes.

Rose Darko: Hmm.

Kitty Farmer: Now, believe me, of all the other mothers, I would never dream of asking you. But none of the other mothers are available to go.

Rose Darko: I don't know, Kitty. It's a bad weekend. Eddie's in New York.

Kitty Farmer: [tearfully] Rose! I don't know if you realize what an opportunity this is for our daughters! This has been a dream of Samantha's and all of ours for a long time! I made her lead dancer! Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

Dr. Lillian Thurman: Do you feel alone right now?

Donnie: I... I don't know... I mean, I'd like to believe that I'm not, but I just... I've just never seen any proof, so I... I just don't debate it anymore. You know, it's like I could spend my whole life debating it over and over again, weighing the pro's and con's and in the end, I still wouldn't have any proof, so I just... I just don't debate it anymore. Heh, it's absurd...

Dr. Thurman: The search for God is absurd?

Dr. Thurman: Does that scare you?

Donnie: I don't wanna be alone.

Donnie: How's it feel to have a wacko for a son?

Rose Darko: It feels wonderful.

Donnie Darko: Dear Roberta Sparrow, I've reached the end of your book and there are so many questions that I need to ask you. Sometimes I am afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I am afraid this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

Dr. Lillian Thurman: If the sky were to suddenly open up... there would be no law... there would be no rule. There would only be you and your memories... the choices you've made and the people you've touched. The life that has been carved out from your subconscious is the only evidence by which you will be judged... by which you must judge yourself. Because when this world ends, there will only be you and him... and no one else.

Karen Pommeroy: The children have to save themselves these days because the parents have no clue.

Karen Pommeroy: [to Principal Cole] I don't think that you have a clue what it's like to communicate with these kids. And we are losing them to apathy, to this prescribed nonsense. They are slipping away.

Eddie Darko: I-I know I'm not the best communicator, but... whatever happens to you, be honest, tell the truth, even if they do look at you funny. They will. But what you gotta understand, Son, is that almost all of those people are full of sh*t. [laughs] They're all part of this great big conspiracy of bullshit. And they're scared of people like you, because those bullshitters know that you're smarter than all of them. You know what you say to people like that? Hmm? "F*** you."

Frank: 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds. That is when the world will end.

Lovitt, expressing her excitement for the continuation of the series, asked Winderbaum for comic recommendations to revisit during the wait, noting that she knew the Age of Apocalypse arc would be key. Winderbaum’s response highlighted the timelessness of certain storylines and the importance of Chris Claremont’s contributions to the X-Men universe.

"I don't want to spoil anything, especially this far out, but you can't go wrong with Claremont. Filling in the gaps of Claremont's decades-long run on the books is always a great place to start for the show."

Claremont's tenure on Uncanny X-Men is legendary, having penned many of the most iconic and beloved stories in the X-Men saga . From the introduction of key characters to unforgettable arcs, including the Savage Land arc , Claremont's work has shaped the X-Men into the complex, multifaceted team that fans adore. For those unfamiliar with Claremont’s work or looking to revisit his stories, some of the essential arcs include:

The Age of Apocalypse Is a Must for 'X-Men '97' Fans

Lovitt's mention of the Age of Apocalypse arc is also noteworthy. This alternate reality storyline, where Charles Xavier is dead and Magneto leads the X-Men against Apocalypse, offers a rich tapestry of character dynamics and high-stakes drama . Rogue and Magneto’s relationship , highlighted in the first season of X-Men '97 , is one of the many intriguing elements of this saga. The Age of Apocalypse is not just a fan-favorite but also a pivotal narrative that showcases what happens when the X-Men are pushed to their limits in a world turned upside down. Revisiting this arc can provide fans with deeper context and appreciation for the themes explored in X-Men '97 .

For those eager to dive deeper into the lore, Winderbaum’s suggestion to fill in the gaps of Claremont’s extensive run offers an exciting challenge. With decades of stories to choose from, there’s no shortage of material to explore. Whether it’s the early adventures of the new team introduced in Giant-Size X-Men #1 , the complex relationships and political intrigue of the Hellfire Club , or the expansive Mutant Massacre , Claremont’s run is a treasure trove of storytelling.

As X-Men '97 continues to build on the rich legacy of the original series, diving back into the comics that inspired it can enhance the viewing experience. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the world of mutants, exploring Chris Claremont’s iconic stories and the Age of Apocalypse arc will provide a deeper understanding and greater appreciation for the characters and their journeys. So grab your favorite issues, settle in, and get ready for another thrilling season of X-Men '97 .

Trump's hush-money trial is almost over. Deliberations could begin as early as Thursday — unless Trump testifies.

  • The Trump hush-money trial has finished its fourth week of testimony.
  • Michael Cohen is set to finish on Monday as the prosecution's last direct-case witness.
  • Will Trump testify? No one is saying, but if he takes the stand, deliberations would be pushed back.

Insider Today

After one week of jury selection and four weeks of prosecution testimony, Donald Trump's New York hush-money trial is now in its home stretch.

Jurors are on track to start deliberating either right before or right after the four-day Memorial Day weekend, as revealed in a scheduling discussion late Thursday.

That timing now largely depends on two yet-decided things: how much state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan will rein in a looming battle of the experts, and whether Trump will take the stand in his own defense.

Trump previously said he would take the stand . Ultimately that decision will be his, not his lawyers, who have no legal power to stop him if he decides to address his jury directly.

But there has been no confirmation either way, and the judge and prosecutors remained in the dark as the trial wrapped up for the week.

Here is how next week is shaping up.

Monday: Cohen steps down, the defense case begins

Monday morning will begin with the final testimony by Michael Cohen, Trump's former all-around "fixer" and the prosecution's star — and final — direct-case witness.

Lead Trump defense lawyer Todd Blanche said Thursday that his cross-examination of Cohen will be done before the morning break, which typically comes around 11 a.m.

Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger said her re-direct of Cohen will be "under an hour."

That gets Cohen off the stand by noon, at which point the prosecution will rest its direct case, and the defense will make a likely failed motion to toss the case on insufficient evidence.

Then, the defense case will begin.

Blanche said Thursday that Trump's side will call at least one witness for their direct case — Bradley A. Smith, commissioner of the Federal Election Commission from 2000-2005.

Prosecutors have alleged that Trump falsified 34 business records to conceal any of three underlying tax and campaign-finance crimes.

The defense hopes Smith can expound at length about federal campaign-finance law, in anticipation of what Blanche on Thursday called "sort of a battle of the experts."

A 'battle of the experts'

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Conroy, the prosecution's election law point man, complained Thursday that a battle of the experts is the last thing the judge should want.

Smith's testimony must be strictly limited in accordance with Merchan's own previous rulings, Conroy argued. Otherwise, jurors risk being confused by three interpretations of the law — from Smith, a prosecution rebuttal witness, and then the judge himself.

"Your honor, I think 95% of the proffered testimony that was just described flies directly in the face of your extremely clear March 18th Order, which expressly said that Mr. Smith may not testify regarding the interpretation and application of federal campaign finance laws," Conroy told the judge.

Merchan already has set strict limits on Smith, confining his testimony to general definitions of finance-law terms and the role of the Federal Election Campaign Commission. Commentary on trial evidence and interpretations of the law are expressly forbidden.

Merchan said Thursday that he will spend the weekend re-examining these guardrails in light of a recent defense request that the rules for his testimony be expanded.

But the judge warned of Smith's testimony: "Until you hear differently from me, it's going to be limited to the very, very general definitions and very general background information."

If Trump indeed decides to take the stand, that testimony could also begin on Monday. If not, prosecutors could call their own election-law expert as part of a brief rebuttal case.

Will Trump testify?

As of late Thursday, the defense had yet to tell prosecutors, the judge, or the public if they will be calling Trump to testify.

Blanche had only this to say before court broke for the week: "That's another decision that we need to think through."

Tuesday: Either Trump or closing arguments

It's possible closing arguments will be made Tuesday.

But that would require an efficient and Trump-free Monday.

If Smith's testimony drags, if prosecutors and the defense mount an extensive rebuttal battle, and especially if Trump testifies, that could push summations into the next day of court, Thursday.

"I'm doing everything possible to avoid big breaks between summations, jury charge, jury instructions, and deliberations," Merchan told the parties Thursday.

"I will try not to break up summations, if at all possible," he said.

"And as we discussed in the robing room, the deliberations should follow immediately after the jury charge," he added.

Wednesday: no court

Early Thursday, the judge asked jurors if they could work Wednesday, which is usually a day off for the trial. Merchan uses Wednesdays to handle his other cases.

But the jurors asked to keep the day off, "So that's off the table," the judge told the parties during a break in Cohen's testimony.

Trump, meanwhile, is due to appear in court Wednesday for oral arguments in his federal classified-documents case in Florida.

That hearing is for "a very small motion and our intention is to seek permission from Judge Cannon that President Trump be excused," Blanche said of Judge Aileen Cannon.

"In the past, she has agreed," Blanche said.

Thursday: Deliberations could begin

Again, if the scheduling stars align, deliberations could begin Thursday, the last trial day before the four-day holiday.

A Thursday start to deliberations would have to follow a very productive Monday and Tuesday.

Before deliberations can begin, jurors need to hear the entirety of the defense case — with or without Trump.

They need to hear any rebuttal case, which would likely be centered on the testimony of Smith.

They also need to hear both sides' closing arguments. After that, the judge would have to instruct the jurors on the underlying law and on the rules of deliberations.

The likelihood of deliberations beginning Thursday increases if Merchan can get the parties, jurors, and court staff to agree to work longer days on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

"I'm going to look into that, and see if we could start early" on Tuesday and Thursday, Merchan told the parties before breaking for the weekend.

"I think that we can work a little bit late on some days," he added.

One of the trial's six alternates can only work until 1 p.m. Thursday, but alternates are typically dismissed at the start of deliberations, so that may not prove a problem.

"We will play it by ear and see how that plays out," Merchan said.
