Umrah is the religious duty of Muslims. Though not obligatory to perform, it’s a sunnah of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) to offer umrah rituals. However, the rewards Umrah holds for the pilgrims are similar to that of the obligatory pilgrimage of Hajj. That’s why it is also known as the ‘Minor/Lesser Pilgrimage’ to Hajj.

Every year, the city of Makkah welcomes millions of pilgrims traveling from across the globe to offer the holy rites of Umrah. Ramadan being the busiest time for umrah's performance welcomes around 2-3 million pilgrims at a time.

Time for the umrah performance

Since umrah is a sunnah pilgrimage, it can be observed by the pilgrims at any time of the year. Therefore, you can travel for umrah rituals at a time that works best for you. However, traveling in the month of Ramadan is expensive as well as more rewarding; making it the busiest time for umrah travel. On the other hand, the month of December is quite relaxed when it comes to umrah performance.

Where are the rituals of umrah observed?

The rituals of Umrah are performed within the premises of Masjid-al-Haram in Makkah, Saudia Arabia.

Rites of Minor Pilgrimage

There are four primary rituals of the minor pilgrimage;

1. Getting in the state of Ihram

Ihram is the state of absolute purity that a pilgrim has to obtain before beginning the performance of the rituals of umrah. For which you must;

Trim your fingernails and toenails
Get a haircut and mustache trim (if needed)
Shave the unnecessary hair from the body i.e., underarms and below the navel
Perform Ghusl
Wear the Ihram Clothes

Remember that Ihram must be assumed by a pilgrim before crossing the ‘Meeqat’ boundary which is different for pilgrims arriving from different regions i.e., on all 4 corners of Makkah. If a pilgrim crosses Meeqat without having assumed Ihram, umrah would be valid but a penalty is due for him/her.

2. Performing Tawaf of the Holy Kaabah

Tawaf means circumambulation around the holy Kaabah for seven consecutive rounds. Pilgrims must start tawaf after having assumed the state of Ihram and perform it in an anti-clockwise direction i.e., keeping the Holy Kaabah on the left-hand side. Every round of Tawaf must begin at the place of Hajar-al-Aswad (the Blackstone) and end there as well.

3. Undertaking the Sayee of Safah and Marwah Hills

After the Tawaf is complete, pilgrims are advised to proceed towards the hills of Safah and Marwah inside of Masjid-al-Haram and perform Sayee. Sayee refers to walking/running between the hills of Safah and Marwah seven times. The first round of Sayee must begin from Safah towards Marwah while the seventh round ends at Marwah.

4. Shaving (Halq) or Trimming (Taqsir) of the Head

After the Sayee is performed, pilgrims must get their hair clipped to perform the last ritual of Umrah. For men, Halq (shaving the head) is advised however they can also opt for equal trimming of hair from all sides (Taqsir). On the other hand, women are only allowed to cut a fingertip's length of their hair.

Which vaccines are needed before leaving for Umrah?

Among the requisites of Umrah travel, getting vaccinated is also a necessary one. Without being vaccinated, one can be denied entry to the kingdom for holy rituals. However, the type of vaccination requirements would differ for pilgrims depending upon their region of travel.
