Danube River Cruise

This review is late in coming but I still wanted to do it. We loved our River Cruise with Gate 1. To be honest I was a little nervous because I just couldn't find a lot of info on them. Unpacking once and seeing so many beautiful places, with great tours that were included were just wonderful, .the guides were so knowledgeable, their English was excellent and the cities were fascinating. My husband has a dairy allergy and they sent the menu to our room dairy every morning if what would be served that day. They asked him to choose what he wanted and they would make sure his meal was dairy free. That level of service was amazing. The only thing I would say is that for some people, Gate 1 would not be luxurious enough. The meals were excellent but not extravagant. The wines were good but not amazing. We were just fine with that since we can take two full vacations with a company like Gate 1 for LESS than the cost of one Viking river cruise. Once the pandemic is over we will book again with them

My wife and I fully pay for an Amsterdam River Cruise for April 10, 2020 with airfare. This include business airfare for two. Due to Covid 19 the trip was cancel by the airline and the Gate 1. Getting the land /cruise package refund was no problem. Air France could not refund the airfare directly to me, since Gate 1 did the booking, so they said they will refund it directly to Gate 1. Per many Air France e-mails, they did this via a wire transfer to Gate 1 on Nov 28,2020 in their response to the Department of Transportation. As of this date Feb. 23, 2021, Gate ! denied every receiving such refund and have refused to contact Air France what happen to the $5,362.38. It appears that Gate 1 received the monies and will not acknowdge that they received it inorder to avoid refund. They did even try to check if they receive the monies on Nov. 28, 2020 in their accounting book/records. I have call them many times, but they never call back. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL.

We have taken three tours with Gate 1, and all were excellent. We had planned a tour in October which was cancelled due to covid19. Given that we weren't the only ones going through this, I think that Gate 1 did a great job of issuing a timely credit for the tour portion. But then they, to our surprise, went above and beyond, and were able to recover our paid airfare. We'll be booking with them again when the dust of this pandemic settles

Been on 8 trips with Gate1. Great guides, great food, lots of info about where you are. And reasonable. My guide Udom in Thailand was the best guide I ever had. Lots of unplanned stops and hilarious comments.

Buyer Beware. They do not take care of their customers. As soon as an issue arrives, they blame the partnering company. They function as an ONE STOP SHOP but if there's an issue with the flight, they wont help. I will NEVER travel with them or use this service again!

I am an advocate for this company. Have done four trips with and all outstanding, great guides and organization. I like many were victims of cancellations due to COVID. I had $20K+ invested in an African Safari that was cancelled. Also as part was Business Class Upgrades etc. I decided to ask for a full refund as per their terms. I received a 100% refund of this large amount, no questions asked. I will travel again with this company when things get back to normal.

Caution when booking far in advance

As a warning to others: At least three months ago I booked a 15 day round trip of Spain with Gate 1. Two weeks ago I was called and notified that the trip was cancelled due to not enough participants and was offered the same tour a week later. I was unable to do that as I had already bought flight tickets for the tour booked. Their attitude simply was sorry, there was nothing that they could do. I asked about some sort of credit for future trips due to this inconvenience and was told that the fine print stated that they could cancel tours up to sixty days out without and further actions. I also pointed out that I considered it odd that they had these tours booked a week apart given that they are two week tours, pointing out that I wondered if this was a ploy to make sure that one of them went---no comment. So, bottom line is that I was out of luck. As an aside, I also booked another tour for September. In this tour I have already been notified that there has been one hotel change (an obvious downgrade) and that one of the places on the itinerary won't be visited because they're closed that day. Really, they didn't know that? Felt people should know downfalls of working with this company.

We booked a trip to France and made 100% percent of the payment upfront. It has been more than 3 weeks and Gate1 is yet to confirm our trip. Gate1 says it has a problem with one hotel accomodation. If it is not available, Gate1 will return the money. But, until the trip is confirmed, we are unable to book our flights because we will lose a lot of money on flight tickets if trip is not confirmed. Gate1 says it will hold the money and confirm the tour only a day before. Gate1 will not allow us to cancel the trip at this time even though they have not confirmed our tour and will not confirm until the day of tour.. Gate1 behaves like a 3rd rate tour operator trying to bilk customers

We have been traveling with Gate 1 since 2014 and have been very satisfied. We booked a trip with them last month. We are unvaccinated and we’re thinking that things would slowly return to normal. And after reading Gate 1’s website statement: “ we require all travelers to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 prior to starting their trip. This requirement will remain in place until guidance changes from health organizations and governments. The second part is the key statement: “this requirement will remain in place until guidance changes from health organizations and governments”. Yesterday, March 13th, several European nations dropped their vaccination requirement for entry, but in my conversation with Gate 1 today, I was told that the vaccination requirement was a Gate 1 requirement. Something here smells really bad. Is Gate 1 discriminating against the unvaccinated?

1. I was charged $400 single supplements fees for a 7 day/5 nights hotel stay. The $400 fees supposed to gave me 1 double room for single use for 5 nights. The first 2 nights in Amsterdam, Hotel Leonard Boutiques city center, I was put in a single room for 2 nights. I compared my room with the single room posted at hotel websites. They were identical. Gate 1 Travel refused to refund me 2 nights of supplements. 2. I prepaid both hotel transfers. My inbound flight back to California was very early in the morning. In order to catch the boarding time of 8 am comfortably I requested to have hotel transfer at 4:00am. It took one hour driving from hotel to airport. The tour manager refused to reschedule from 5 am which he had scheduled to 4am. I had to call taxi and Gate 1 refused to reimburse me the taxi fare. 3. The day before departure We paid €32 to have Covid Rapid Antigen Test done at 8 am in hotel lobby. By 8:30 pm we had not received the QR code. We tried to locate the tour manager, we couldn’t fine him. We reached out hotel desk for further assistance. Hotel clerk had advised that the tour manager had (1) no hotel room (2) no email address on file (3) the cellphone number he posted on the bulletin board was non-working number, a fake number (4) he was no where to be found!

We just finished our 13 days tour to Israel and Jordan with Gate 1! it was AMAZING! We spent six days with Tsidki Yona in Israel. From Tel-Aviv, Caesarea, Upper Galilee, Golan Heights, Beit She’an, Jerusalem New City, Bethlehem, Masada to the Dead Sea. Tsidki was a great guide. His knowledge of history, geography, bible stories and the culture of the region enriched our experience of being there, by giving a context to the many places we visited that would have been missing without having him with us. His open, fun and kind personality made it easy to ask questions and always get more information back than we bargained for! not only exceptional in his knowledge of the history of Israel and its neighbors, including all the diverse cultures and political challenges, but he is also undeniably passionate about what he does. This was a really special experience for a non-Christian in the Holy Land! Following Israel, we spent six AWESOME days touring Jordan. The sites we visited were spectacular, the site of Jesus’s baptism by John the Baptist in Bethany, Petra, Kerak Castle, Little Petra, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Rum jeep Safari, to camel caravan expedition and Amman. Omar Bani Hani from Gate 1 was our OUTSTANDING guide as we traveled throughout Jordan. He felt like a member of the family to me, only one with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history, culture, politics, and geography of Jordan and surrounding countries. He was patient with our group of 27 and was able to instantly pivot our scheduled site visits to accommodate the inclement weather in the itinerary hence optimized our visit remarkably! His constant smile and humor brightened our trip every day. Omar was also a "one stop shop" from handling visa to Covid tests. He did it all seamlessly. Omar made our trip informative, safe, worry-free, and most of all enjoyable. He is an ASSET to Gate 1. We would definitely recommend Gate 1 for anyone traveling to Jordan. The hotels accommodation were all fine exceptions were the hotel in Tel Aviv (the hotel Metropolitan) and in Tiberias (Restal Hotel). both were in a great location but desperately needing renovations. All other accommodations: Holiday Inn Dead Sea, Old Village Hotel in Petra and Movenpick hotel in Amman are solid four star hotels. Last but not least, we made lifelong friends during this tour. It was a fabulous trip! it would earn five stars if not for the two hotel accommodations that were not at par with the tour.

If you ever thought about going to see Victoria Falls and go on safaris in southern Africa this is the time to go. Tours are just starting back up after COVID and tour sizes are smaller, which means more personal time with the guides and tour manager. We just returned from a 14 day (we added a day) trip to South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. We started in Johannesburg and went to Soweto and learned about Nelson Mandela and how Apartheid ended. We then traveled by air to Zambia, where we took a Sundowner cruise on the beautiful Zambezi River where we saw hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife. Next day, we visited Victoria Falls on both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides of the Falls. It is impossible to capture in words how beautiful, majestic, and powerful the Falls are. They are so massive it is almost unbelievable. As an extra, my wife and I took a helicopter ride over the Falls, while a friend we made on the tour went horse back riding. Our accommodations in Livingstone were superb! We then went to Chobe National Park in Botswanan where we took a river boat ride and saw buffalo, hippos, impala, and elephants. The next morning we enjoyed a fantastic safari game drive through the national park. Our next major stop was to the Okavango Delta for game drives to see other animals. On this trip we saw individual and a journey of giraffes, lions, elephants, ostrich, antelope, zebra, hyena, impala, warthogs, and a large variety of birds. This time we stayed in permanent tents. What a fun adventure. These tents are like hotel rooms. They have indoor toilets and outside showers with plenty of warm water. They also had the most comfortable beds! From there, on to the beautiful and lively Cape Town, where we took a tram up Table Mountain, walk through the vibrant V & A shopping and entertainment center, spent a day visiting three wineries (on a double decker train), and spent a day traveling down the western coast where we saw South African penguins and took a Funicular to the old lighthouse perched up on a mountain. We are avid travelers, but this trip through Gate1 was truly one of the best adventures that we have been on. Our Tour Manager was Desire Pringle and we couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us. She is extremely knowledgeable about all of the areas that we travel to, the historic sites in each place, and wild game that we saw. She was extremely professional and friendly. She truly cared about our enjoyment and in getting a quality experience at every destination on the tour. She does an incredible job and should be requested if you take this tour.

Adaptive equipment is making national parks more inclusive

At Great Smoky Mountains National Park, adaptive mountain bikes and kayaks aid visitors with disabilities

gate 1 travel washington dc

New resources available at Great Smoky Mountains National Park help visitors with disabilities explore hiking trails, go mountain biking, paddle kayaks and camp overnight in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee.

After launching a program of free, adaptive activities last year, the country’s most-visited national park will expand the number and type of excursions this summer.

“The programs allow individuals with disabilities and their families and community to move beyond the pavement to explore and enjoy the Smokies,” said Emily Davis, a public affairs specialist with the national park.

For its inaugural year, the national park and its partners organized three hikes and one mountain bike outing for parkgoers who use adaptive gear. This year, the program will feature three hikes, two mountain bike rides, one kayak trip and one night of backcountry camping. The outings are scheduled for select dates in June, July, September and October.

Davis said the staff receives daily emails and phone calls from people inquiring about the special excursions and adaptive equipment, which the park loans out through a separate program. She said the messages come from locals and out-of-town guests planning to vacation in the popular park. Last year, more than 13 million people visited, according to National Park Service data .

Eric Gray, founder and executive director of Catalyst Sports , one of the program’s key partners, said the nonprofit will provide three hiking chairs (plus two from the park), seven adaptive kayaks and a dozen mountain bikes, in addition to snacks and drinks. Experienced staff members and volunteers will help with the fit and handling of the gear.

“We’re trying to remove as many barriers as possible,” Gray said. “All they need to do is show up.”

Types of adaptive equipment

Catalyst’s equipment is available to anyone with a physical disability and caters to a range of special needs. Some of the kayaks and bikes are built for two, ideal for people with visual impairments.

  • The organization uses three-wheel off-road trikes for people who can move their legs but have poor balance, and handcycle mountain bikes for cyclists without leg mobility. The bikes come with e-assist for powering through tough or steep terrain.
  • The hiking chairs have levers (easier to push than dirt-encrusted wheels) and a front wheel for steamrolling over large obstacles.
  • The kayaks have outriggers to prevent tipping, and a custom seat supports people with limited abdominal functions. Hand adaptations are tailored for amputees and others with restricted capabilities.

Participants can also bring their own gear. Folks who don’t require special assistance are invited, too.

“ It’s not just about making something accessible. It’s about making it inclusive, so that the entire family and friends can be part of it,” said Mark Bogosian, the director of engagement at the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation . “By offering these kinds of programs, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is really making sure that everybody in the community has the opportunity to participate and enjoy nature and be active.”

The inclusive outdoors

National parks are becoming increasingly more welcoming to outdoor enthusiasts with mobility issues. In addition to its adaptive-friendly excursions, the Great Smoky national park has three adult-size off-road wheelchairs (and one junior chair) available for use on accessible trails. NPS volunteers meet the guest at the trailhead for a safety overview and quick tutorial. The volunteer can accompany the hikers or wait at the trailhead. Davis said the park plans to expand its fleet as well as train more volunteers for this service.

Several other NPS sites also provide all-terrain wheelchairs (e.g., Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Rocky Mountain National Park ) or beach wheelchairs ( Golden Gate National Recreation Area , Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve , Gulf Islands National Seashore ). The rentals are complimentary. Because of the limited supply, reservations are strongly recommended.

The movement is also flourishing on the state and regional levels. All-Terrain Georgia supplies all-terrain wheelchairs to more than a dozen destinations in the Peach State, including Cloudland Canyon, Panola Mountain and Cumberland Island. Tennessee State Parks and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources provide the trailblazing equipment in 13 parks each. A number of other state park departments are also onboard, including Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

“I do see the domino effect,” said Carly Pearson, the ADA coordinator in Knox County, Tenn. “Other parks are catching on.”

Pearson, a former NPS wildland firefighter who suffered a spinal cord injury in 2002, said she assisted the Knoxville nonprofit Legacy Parks Foundation in creating one of the first adaptive mountain bike trails in East Tennessee. The Independence and Freedom Trail was completed in spring 2020. She said a number of local partners have since collaborated to develop more outdoor sites that can accommodate adaptive equipment.

People with mobility issues said one of the biggest obstacles to exploring the outdoors is acquiring or accessing the specialized gear. The equipment can be prohibitively expensive. Pearson said a fully kitted-out adaptive mountain bike can cost $22,000.

“Do I want to pay for my son’s college, or do I go and selfishly buy myself a recreational piece of equipment?” she said. “I’m going to take care of my kid, of course.”

Specialized guides

Though loaner programs help adventurers overcome that hurdle, availability isn’t always enough. Depending on the individual’s capabilities, the visitor might need help settling into the equipment and navigating the unfamiliar trail or body of water. That’s where the support team comes in.

For the Great Smoky Mountains program, Gray said guests will be accompanied by experts from his team, including an adaptive mountain bike director who lives in Asheville, N.C., a hiking director who will oversee the day treks and backcountry camping trip, and an adaptive kayaking specialist from Knoxville. Park rangers will cover the educational portion of the outings, sharing ecological and historical tidbits with the group.

For backcountry camping, Gray said guests will hike for about 1½ miles, cook over a fire and sleep in tents. They will rough it — to a point. Instead of digging a hole for a toilet, they will have access to a portable commode.

“We’re going to make it easier for them for their first experience in the backcountry,” he said.

Each national park shares information about its accessible trails and adaptive programs on its website and in its visitor center. For a broader scope, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation created a search tool to help people locate accessible and adaptable programs, events and resources around the country. The organization also has a team of advisers who can help with trip planning and other recreational advice. The service is free.

“The information specialists are trained to help people locate areas for adaptive activities,” Bogosian said. “They help them think about the questions they need to ask as they plan their trips.”

‘Healing and restorative’ exercise

Matt Lee, a 43-year-old Asheville resident, suffered a spinal cord injury the summer after he graduated high school. He uses a wheelchair, which restricts his outdoor activities. Several years ago, he upgraded to a power-assisted device with off-road tires and a free wheel attachment. His range of exploration improved, but he still runs into stumbling blocks.

“You can get to a certain point,” he said, “but there might be a creek or a stream or some uprooted areas or lots of rocks that are just too challenging to navigate.”

In 2022, he attended an adaptive mountain bike clinic hosted by Catalyst Sports. He said it was the first time he had biked that hard and that deep into nature since his accident. He learned about the Great Smoky program during the clinic and signed up for two hikes last year. For the first trek, he borrowed a “passive” Joëlette all-terrain wheelchair from the North Carolina Spinal Cord Injury Association . He brought his own equipment for the second excursion on Deep Creek Trail.

“To venture off and experience being out in nature — it’s very healing and restorative,” he said. “Now that I’ve been able to get out there, I feel better. I’m happier. My overall well-being has improved.”

This year, he is considering the kayak outing and the backcountry trip, an adventure that is long overdue.

“I haven’t really done overnight camping in over 20 years,” he said. “So that would be a new experience for me since my injury.”
