Combiner Wars (toyline)

From Transformers Wiki

(thumbnail)

Combiner Wars is a subline imprint of the Generations toyline, constituting the first portion of the Prime Wars Trilogy .

Debuting at the very end of 2014, it saw Deluxe, Voyager, and some Legends Class figures able to form Combiner robots, primarily of the Scramble City variety that allows the Deluxe figures to be either an arm or a leg, and allowing mix-and-match combinations. The format for Legends Class was changed once again, dropping the small partner figures of the Thrilling 30 line.

The tradition of including IDW comic books with U.S. [1] Deluxes (started by the Thrilling 30 segment) continued, whilst Legends, Voyagers, and non-U.S. Deluxes gained collector cards featuring art taken either from the Transformers Legends mobile game, or simply the toy's package art (which doubles as the comic book cover for the U.S. [1] version). Each pack-in comic also included an expanded profile for the toy written by Mark Weber . However, due to production schedule problems, [2] Deluxe wave 1's initial U.S. [1] release featured the collector cards in lieu of comics. Along with the concurrently released Robots in Disguise line, Combiner Wars also heralded the return of multilingual packaging to the United States [1] market, now in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The sole exception to this was the Deluxe figures packaged with comic books, which retained English-only packaging.

Meanwhile, Combiner Wars marked the end of the Toys"R"Us exclusivity for Generations figures that had been in effect in several European markets since the launch of the original line in 2010 (which had usually resulted in only one wave per assortment ever being released in Europe). Not only did availability and distribution improve tremendously across the board—the Combiner Wars figures were even released in European markets where Generations figures had previously never been available at all! At the same time, European packaging reduced the number of languages from thirteen to a mere four (English, French, German, and Spanish), resulting in a less cluttered packaging design.

After the general retail assortments had run their course, the line was extended for several months via giftsets of complete teams featuring redecos and retools, referred to as "Collection Packs" in official promotional materials. Those sets were typically "shared exclusives" between online retailers and the online storefronts of "big box" retailers, though they were also available at brick and mortar retail in several non-U.S. markets.

The Japanese version of this line, Unite Warriors , was considerably smaller, being almost entirely boxed sets released on a very staggered schedule.

  • Devastator , giftset of 6 Voyager-sized figures, includes:
  • Constructicon Hook
  • Constructicon Long Haul
  • Constructicon Scavenger
  • Constructicon Bonecrusher
  • Constructicon Scrapper
  • Constructicon Mixmaster

"May Mayhem" Deluxes

These were officially exclusive to online retailers and comic book stores for the United States market (although a few specimens ended up at retail stores), but were available at general retail in Hasbro's Asian markets. Not counting store-initiated imports, they were never officially available in Canada, Australia or Europe. Regardless of the markets they were released in, Brake-Neck and Quickslinger were only available in English-only packaging including comic books, whereas Groove was only available in multilingual packaging including a character card instead of a comic book.

Convention multi-packs

While these toys premiered at conventions (most prominently San Diego Comic-Con 2015), they also ended up available through other venues, like the Hasbro Toy Shop online store, and even at retail in international markets such as Asia and Australia. See individual entries for more information.

"Online exclusive" Collection Packs

Most of these box sets were "shared exclusives" sold by numerous online retailers. Liokaiser, however, was a Platinum Edition set officially exclusive to Entertainment Earth in the United States... but he was also available from other venues in other markets, and even in the United States, online retailers that got their stock from overseas carried him regardless.

Fun Publications

While the figures and sets listed above were all Hasbro-initiated releases, Hasbro licensee Fun Publications also branded their BotCon 2016 exclusives and the Transformers Figure Subscription Service 4.0 and 5.0 figures as part of the Combiner Wars line (including figures that weren't part of the "combiner" concept), as opposed to the usual Timelines branding for previous FunPub exclusives.

"Special Edition" Deluxe

In 2018, during the course of Power of the Primes , Hasbro released three exclusive Deluxe Class figures in premium-style boxes, each with a Prime Master , to commemorate the Prime Wars Trilogy . Each figure represents one part of the trilogy, and for Combiner Wars Hasbro used the Unite Warriors Shuttler mold (instead of Takara's version of Blast Off). Special Edition Blast Off was exclusive to Amazon in North America but available at general retail in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Compatible toys in other lines

With Combiner Wars eclipsing previous attempts at combiner toys in both quantity and quality, it came as no surprise that the line's engineering would become the default method to represent combining characters in the years that followed. What began as simple cosmetic differences applied to Combiner Wars toys would soon lead to extensive retools and dedicated molds, all of which are cross-compatible with the combination play pattern .

Unite Warriors

Combiner Wars ' concurrent counterpart in TakaraTomy markets, Unite Warriors consisted largely of combiners sold in box sets of one torso and four limbs, omitting the Legends Class weaponry that would characterise the Hasbro line. Unite Warriors toys featured elaborate decos to more accurately reflect each character's appearance in the original animated series . The line would omit Hasbro original characters, such as Alpha Bravo and Offroad, in favour of replicating each team's traditional members, in two cases creating brand new molds to better reflect the vintage combiners (incidentally, these "missing members" would make it back to Hasbro markets sooner or much later ). As time went on, Unite Warriors would diverge even further from Combiner Wars , introducing its own exclusive combiner teams in the form of the Commandos and Grand Galvatron , as well as an original character, Megatronia . The level of divergence was most noticeable when comparing the Hasbro and TakaraTomy versions of the Technobots , which featured only two molds out of five in common!

The Combiner Wars -compatible toys in Unite Warriors are:

Power of the Primes

The third part of the Prime Wars Trilogy , Power of the Primes focused on the unified gimmick of "powering up", such as gaining the abilities of one of the original Thirteen Primes or evolving to Primehood , so it of course went back to the Combiner Wars well to bring back the Terrorcons as well as other classic characters in new combiner-compatible forms. The majority of the toys in Power of the Primes were newly-designed to match the Combiner Wars system, with only a handful reusing tooling from that line.

Each Deluxe and Voyager figure includes "Prime Armor" (a fancy word for the Combiner extremities), which can house a Titan Master-compatible toy, but more relevantly, the male end of a Combiner Wars combination joint, a feature later used officially for the Selects Seacons. Since the Prime Armor also has 5 mm posts /ports that most Transformers toys share, it opens an endless world of fan modes .

Power of the Primes was the first in the so-called "brand unification" of Hasbro and Takara's Transformers ranges, meaning that, aside from release dates and ID numbers, each toy released in both lines was virtually identical, ending the long-running tradition of Japanese toys getting different paint jobs and tooling.

Combiner Wars -compatible toys in Power of the Primes include:

Generations Selects (TakaraTomy)

Only forget all that about Japanese-exclusive variants being over and done with, because as soon as TakaraTomy got its hands on the Generations Selects name, it produced two full sets of Sea cons that were heavily retooled from Power of the Primes molds. These were followed by distinct versions of the Terrorcons and Dinobots, making use of new decoes, retooled parts, and accessories largely to better resemble the teams' depictions in the original cartoon. Essentially, this was a revival of the Unite Warriors style of combiners, complete with three out of the four teams being sold in giftsets. Each of these releases would also be imported to U.S. markets by Hasbro Pulse .

The compatible toys from TakaraTomy's Generations Selects consist of:

And all the rest

A small selection of combiner-compatible toys were sold in other lines where combination wasn't necessarily the main focus. For limb bots, this was predominantly in aid of releasing desirable characters or deco variants in collector-aimed lines—for example, the Hasbro version of Generations Selects , which directly tied into Power of the Primes and War for Cybertron: Siege .

With Unite Warriors omitting the Legends Class molds from Combiner Wars , TakaraTomy elected to release them in the concurrent Adventure and Legends (no relation) lines. This included the molds for the combiner teams' littlest members, which retained the ability to become a weapon or armour for compatible combiners, regardless of whether or not this functionality was advertised in their instructions. The outlier in this group is the later Titans Return Cosmos, a Hasbro toy, which retained limited combiner compatibility thanks to a retooled part that debuted with Combiner Wars Scrounge.

Finally, there is the unique case of Legends Godbomber, who was designed to partsform like his original 1980s toy to facilitate the contemporary Super Ginrai 's "God" form . While many of his parts are connected by 5 mm ports and posts, Godbomber's legs make use of Combiner Wars -style ports; as a result, his legs can be used with any combiner torso, and his thighs are compatible with any of the limb bots (the latter of which appeared as a selling point in his pack-in fiction ).

(thumbnail)

  • Early in the toy line's life cycle, Hasbro advertised the figures with two "movie" style posters published on Facebook, alternatively depicting Superion and the Aerialbots, or Menasor and the Stunticons. [3] The same artwork was later used for the posters included with the "Generation 2" Superion and Menasor Collection Packs. While awesome in their own right, none of those posters were ever featured at public transport stations, so there was still room for improvement !

(thumbnail)

  • The existence of Legends Class Huffer and the name of Blackjack were first revealed by a stock photo of Menasor released during San Diego Comic-Con 2014 . What appeared to be a plain white background was, with color correction, revealed as a Mac OS screenshot displaying filenames for those two characters. Blackjack could easily be identified as the then unnamed black-and-purple car revealed at SDCC, whilst Huffer's toy was later announced at New York Comic Con .
  • In addition, Legends Class Rodimus and Skywarp were accidentally revealed prematurely in January 2015 via official product listings, including stock photos, on the public Hasbro website. This was almost a month before even the wave 3 products of all the main assortments (including Legends Class Groove, Warpath and Viper) would be officially revealed at Toy Fair . Hasbro quietly pulled the listings for Rodimus and Skywarp from their website and then pretended to "officially" reveal them at BotCon 2015 , a whole five months later... by which time they had already been released at retail in Singapore. Whoops.
  • The Hasbro product code numbers for the first three waves of Legends Class figures suggest that a different release order was originally planned: Wave 1 would have included Huffer instead of Windcharger, who would have been the sole new figure in the subsequent wave (or, more likely, simply a revision wave), and Blackjack would have been released in the next wave alongside Warpath, Groove and Viper.
  • The limb robots substituted out of Combiner Wars Superion, Menasor, and Defensor, namely Slingshot , Wildrider , and Groove , also happen to be the same members whose Kre-O incarnations were sold separately from their teams. Coincidence? Probably.

(thumbnail)

  • No wave 2 products of any size classes of Combiner Wars were ever officially released in any European markets, with the sole exception of Legends Class Blackjack, who was eventually released as part of a revision of wave 4. Even Motormaster, who was re-released as part of wave 4 of the Voyager Class assortment alongside Battle Core Optimus Prime, was omitted from the European wave 4 case assortment in favor of Silverbolt and Hot Spot. Hooooowever...
  • In the United States and other markets that got most Deluxes in English-only packaging including comic books, the wave 1 Deluxes were initially only released in multilingual Canadian/Latin American packaging including character cards. This was due to production scheduling problems, and even though Hasbro originally intended to re-release all four figures with comic books (packaged samples exist), ultimately only the comic book version of Dragstrip was released as part of a revision case of wave 2 that saw limited distribution. On top of that, clearance stores such as T.J.Maxx eventually stocked the multilingual Canadian/Latin American character card versions of the wave 4, 5 and 6 figures in late 2016.
  • Canadian retailers such as Walmart and Toys"R"Us stocked the wave 4 Deluxes in English-only packaging including comic books even before the "proper" multilingual packaging versions with character cards instead of comic books became available.
  • In the United Kingdom and Slovakia, the wave 2 Deluxes (specifically the revision case including Dragstrip) appeared during "silly season" in late 2016 at chains such as Guess How Much! (United Kingdom) and Dráčik (Slovakia) as gray imports in English-only packaging including comic books, making this the first time these figures (minus Dragstrip) were available at European retail, long after the fact.
  • In early 2017, gray imports of the wave 4 Deluxes in English-only packaging including comic books also appeared at Intertoys, a Dutch chain with stores in Germany, where they warmed shelves alongside their counterparts in regular European packaging sans comic books. According to the multiple (!) import stickers, these truly went around the world, via China and then the United Kingdom, before ending up in continental Europe!
  • Overall, this means Canadian/Latin American packaging is the only packaging version all general retail Deluxes were officially available in.
  • In the first campaign, buyers who purchased any four Deluxe Class figures from waves 1 and 2, received a free G1 toy-esque upgrade sticker sheet for the Aerialbots and Stunticons . These sticker sheets only applied to the figures of those waves, so the later inclusions to the teams (Quickslinger and Brake-Neck) never received any stickers. Optimus Prime was also not included in the sticker sheet.
  • In the second campaign, buyers who purchased any four Deluxe Class figures from waves 3 and 4, received a free G1 toy-esque upgrade sticker sheet for the Protectobots and the Optimus Maximus components. Like above, the later Protectobot inclusion to the line (Deluxe Class Groove) never received any stickers. Cyclonus was also not included in the sticker sheet.
  • In the third campaign, buyers who purchased Titan Class Devastator, received a free G1 toy-esque upgrade sticker sheet for the set itself.
  • ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Australia, New Zealand, and Hasbro's Asian markets typically get toys in whatever format is also used for the United States. The markets that traditionally get multilingual packaging are Canada, Latin America, and Europe. See the image under "notes" for a comparison.

Onslaught - Generations Combiner Wars - Voyager Class Figure

combiner wars voyager class toy

Click any image to view larger versions!

Onslaught was a foregone conclusion. I don't just mean that Combaticons were inevitable when Combiner Wars started, but generally everyone agreed that Hot Spot would be retooled to make it happen. We were proven right at Botcon, and I couldn't have been more pleased.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Onslaught has a respectable amount of new parts. The shoulders, chest plate, feet, the backpack...

combiner wars voyager class toy

And of course the head. The head I think favors the original G1 toy very strongly, sadly not reflecting the slightly more complex shape introduced with the Universe Ultra Class toy.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The top of the head slopes forward a bit, and it unfortunately makes Onslaught seem to be looking down all the time. There's no movement to the neck besides swiveling, so the downcast look can't be corrected in posing.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The new backpack is a little bit less tidy looking. The variety of parts makes it seem more like there's just junk hanging from the back. Sadly the toy is losing the built in third leg for pose support Hot Spot benefited from. A ladder's not appropriate for Onslaught, but the extra support was convenient sometimes.

combiner wars voyager class toy

I'm really impressed by the joint tolerances. Let's take the knee for example. You might recall from Hot Spot that the knee design is unusual and has to be locked to the shin in a specific way so the leg doesn't come apart in posing. But with Hot Spot it was still possible to pull the knee out even after settling it in correctly. Onslaught does not share that. When this knee is set, it's set. It can be unlocked when it's time to transform, but I haven't had any unintended leg separations during posing yet. I thought this design was okay as long as you understood how to use it before. But Onslaught gives it strength enough to just be good without a qualifier.

combiner wars voyager class toy

It's not just the knees though. Every functioning joint on the toy has this great, solid stiffness. Even the little toes have strong hinges with soft stop points that will hold against the weight of the figure. You can balance Onslaught on its toes, assuming you can find the right balance point for it.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Besides the matters of aesthetics, I'm not exactly satisfied with the backpack in a functional sense either. In order to have the back cannons properly, you have to have the wings open at least this far.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The problem it can make for posing the arms quickly becomes evident.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The correct alignment also relies on these tabs fitting these grooves and keeping the movable lower half of the backpack stabilized. They don't really grab that well though. There is a greater than zero grip on the tabs, but those slots feel in practice more like guides than structural locks.

combiner wars voyager class toy

If not for the cannons, it wouldn't really be an issue. Just ball everything up a bit more and be done. It'd make the backpack junk look worse, but it wouldn't have a particular negative impact otherwise.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Onslaught has a nice steel blue making up the majority of visible robot space. The toy is substantially cast in this color. The light grey that makes up the backpack and other bits and pieces is the next most prevalent color, but stands very insignificant by comparison.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Most of the rest of the visible colors are paint, which I find reasonably impressive.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The thighs are painted, and the dark gunmetal here gives them a great finish.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The military green at the pelvis and shoulders helps a lot to guide perception of the body shape and de-emphasize the blocker structure around them.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The chest is pretty fun. The panel has tech details molded in, and that's then painted to resemble the G1 toy's chest sticker. On one hand, I like the complexity as a counter to all the big areas of different unbroken colors. On the other, having intricate tech detail there might not be my first choice. Especially since the shape of the frame around it and the shapes just below read to me like a fake and very stylized front end of a truck, and that's the angle I think I'd prefer to play up.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Onslaught's transformation features minor differences to Hot Spot. I'd recommend doing the legs before the arms. The stiffer joints make their process a little more difficult, and you'll need to be able to lift the turret out of the way to give them room. The arms are then no issue at all to finish up.

I really like the concept of the vehicle mode.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Using retool parts to reverse the direction of the original vehicle form, and effectively give it a majorly different appearance with very few new pieces.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Now with that being said, the new front end looks pretty weird. I'll ignore the gap down the middle for now since it's not even the problem.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The weird little armored pods make the vehicle confusing. Windows on an armored vehicle would be small like this, but I find it to still make the scale feel weird. There's also that it has two of these implied compartments which thanks to that gap aren't connected to each other.

combiner wars voyager class toy

For the wrong reasons I like the fists being clearly visible on the very front. This truck doesn't just hit you, it punches you in the face.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The back end has an open chunk. It's the combiner ports, and on Hot Spot they were hidden by the fire truck windshield. No such luck here. It's not too terrible though.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The turret is I think at best a mixed result. It's more confined, and more stabilized than the ladder which I feel like is a positive. But I think the ladder helped hide how much gap space there was to the vehicle - a task the turret can't hope to accomplish. The turret doesn't read a whole lot better here than it did in robot mode, either.

combiner wars voyager class toy

It's actually worse in one way where the top of Bruticus's head seems to stand out much more clearly now.

combiner wars voyager class toy

More than that though, I don't think it feels like it fits in with the rest of the vehicle. This gap calls the structural connection in to question. And the winglets folded down against the sides don't integrate visually.

combiner wars voyager class toy

It's not organic. It feels like tacked on parts that aren't supposed to be here. It does help at least one way though. There's a notch in back here to fit the lightbar, and it ends up being a good way to tell if you have the vehicle aligned correctly.

combiner wars voyager class toy

So, Shockwave.

Onslaught has a specific connection point that fits Shockwave's handle.

combiner wars voyager class toy

However, there's no grip. Shockwave stays put, but is not actually held in place. The port is open in back, and so has no capacity to hold the peg. The square cutout in front is just to permit the front half of the handle to fit. So it's fine... as long as Onslaught is sitting flat. It's pretty disappointing. I wasn't expecting any amazing integration, but I certainly thought that Shockwave would be attached securely. Or, you know, at least attached. I have to admit, there's a goofy appeal about sitting a giant space cannon on top of this. But it's really doing nothing to help the aesthetics, nor fix the tacked on parts problem of the turret. As for how Shockwave works on Bruticus, that'll be for next time, as will be the details of Onslaught's torso mode - stay tuned!

combiner wars voyager class toy

Obvious by now, Onslaught has the same guns as Hot Spot. These are able to stay mounted in the backpack and turret at all times, even through transformation. So if you want you can pretend they're just integrated parts of the toy. You can attach them differently than I'm showing, but this is what the instructions depict, and what works best for all modes.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Sadly Onslaught is not quite capable enough to repeat the Hot Spot trick of being able to grasp and draw the guns off their storage points.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Hot Spot easily took place as my favorite of this line's Voyager molds, and if anything, Onslaught just makes those good qualities better. There's a little loss of improvised functionality with the ladder going away, but Onslaught has such a better, stronger feel in all the joints than my Hasbro Hot Spot did.

combiner wars voyager class toy

The more visible vehicle mode gaps are a bit unfortunate. And while I like the design intent of making the retool have a different vehicle orientation to further set it apart from the prior use, I can't say that the execution quite lived up to the idea. That said, I want to see this trick used more. Transformers has become good about making mold reuses feel more distinct from each other, and this is another way to go about that which I think can only turn out better with further efforts.

combiner wars voyager class toy

This is a mold that I'm more than happy to have twice. And if the instance of it in the Victorion set is even nearly as well put together as Onslaught, I'll be thrilled to be in on it for a third time as well. Oh, and then there's gonna be G2 Bruticus, so that'll be a fourth one. Oh, and I'll totally go in for Unite Warriors which'll be a fifth, and then...

combiner wars voyager class toy

The theme for the "Generations" segment of the "Transformers" toy line in 2015 is "Combiner Wars". The focus will be on updated versions of Combiners from the past (with some new elements thrown in for good measure). The idea is to take lessons learned from the Bruticus released a couple years ago and create better Combiners featuring a Voyager Class central body piece with Deluxe sized limbs. To spice things up a bit, some of the Legends Class figures released for "Combiner Wars" will be able to serve as weaponry for the combined giants.

A surprise entry into this series was Optimus Prime. Sure everyone expected Silverbolt and Motormaster in the Voyager Class "torso" figure assortments, but not the Autobot leader. Of course, Optimus has been a Combiner before. In "Energon" he was the center of a Combiner with four vehicles. As Galaxy Convoy (aka Cybertron Optimus Prime) the character could combine with Leobreaker to gain extra power. This time he can form the center torso and head for any of the Combiner limbs in this series, forming a giant known as "Ultra Prime".

Packaging: The packaging for "Combiner Wars" creates a very clear delineation between the main "Robots in Disguise" toy line for 2015 and the more collector oriented "Generations" segment. While the packaging uses the same basic "Transformers" logo as the "Robots in Disguise" line, it is set against a black background instead of white on the right side of the box. Above that is an Autobot symbol with the word "Generations" indicating the segment of the line. The figure itself is on display in robot mode through a window. On the lower left side is artwork of the figure with the words "Combiner Wars" below it and the name "Optimus Prime" below that.

The back of the box features the toy in both modes with a small write up in multiple languages. There are sadly no tech spec stats. The right side shows a schematic of Optimus' combined form "Ultra Prime". The "limbs" in the first wave are also shown as cosells (including Dragstrip as a leg).

The "Combiner Wars" figures all come with collector cards printed on thick cardboard. The artwork featured on the card is different than the artwork on the backing card for the toy. The box features artwork based on the toy itself. This card art is actually from the "Transformers Legends" mobile app card game. I do find myself wishing that the cards had been used for tech specs (the back only features generic logo art) it is a nice "add in" and utilizes the amazing "Legends" art outside the game, something I've wanted to see for quite some time now. It's a cool way to reuse the artwork outside the game.

Accessories: Optimus Prime includes two rifles. One is directly based on the rifle included with the original Generation One Optimus Prime figure. The most distinct detail is the rear part of the rifle which has a section that angles up in the back and then comes back down straight in the front. There are horizontal line details along the sides. Other details on it add to the machine-like look including a part on top that looks like an engine block and a tube on the front that one could imagine projecting a targeting laser. The other rifle bears some resemblance to the weapons included with the Generation 2 version of Optimus Prime. The "give away" details are the exhaust pipe like pieces that curve back on the right side of the weapon.

Both weapons are cast in red plastic. The handles have been left unpainted, but the top part and barrels are painted gunmetal grey. The "G1" style rifle has a 5mm peg and the end of the barrel has a 5mm port. The "G2" styled weapon has a 5mm peg to hold the weapon and a smaller 5mm peg on the back, allowing you to attach it to the barrel of the "G1" style weapon. Even better? Each of the weapons have 5mm ports on them allowing you to attach additional weaponry.

Robot Mode: Optimus Prime's "Combiner Wars" design is a brutish looking one. He has thick, wide arms and a wide chest. Even his legs are chunky and his robot head is relatively small. Looking at these proportions, many fans were put off because he looked too big, but up close I think the proportions look just fine. His arms do hang a bit low (or as some have said, "gorilla style") but not to a severe degree. Given that he has to be a torso section for a Combiner, the bulk on the figure makes sense. I also like the idea of Optimus Prime looking so powerful and formidable.

A quick glance at this figure would have you believe it is just another interpretation of G1 Optimus Prime with windshield windows on his chest and so on. However, a closer look reveals a few different points of inspiration from the past:

  • The head design is very similar to Optimus Prime figures from the past, but it is missing the circles that generally reside on the sides of his head. This design is very similar to the animation model for Powermaster Optimus Prime which lacked the circles but still had antennae on the sides of the head and a crest in the middle with a mouthplate.
  • The positioning of the smokestacks from the vehicle mode calls back to Powermaster Optimus Prime, whose smokestacks wound up behind the arms instead of being attached to the sides.
  • The waist area has sections that extend out to the sides in a roughly triangular shape, similar to G1 Optimus Prime.
  • The shape of the knee armor and the line of horizontal details right under it come straight from the designs on Powermaster Optimus Prime's legs.
  • The lower legs have vent like panels on them similar to many incarnations of Optimus Prime including G1.
  • The front of the feet have three sections, a large one with horizontal lines on top of one another, with two smaller rectangles next to them. This is inspired by sticker details from G1 Optimus Prime's toy.
  • The back section has similarities to the little known G1 version of Optimus Prime known as "Star Convoy" including the angular windows and the lines under it. You can also see some similarities to the design of Hyperdrive, an Autobot that was planned years ago but never produced.

Some of the details on this figure are unique to this design. That includes a lot of the lines and tiny mechanical details on themiddle of the torso area. The upper arms have sections with a row of horizontal lines and some of the panels from the vehicle mode wind up on the sides of the forearms. These details really add a lot of texture to the overall figure.

Optimus is cast in red, silver, blue and black plastic. The placement of these colors is fairly traditional. The red is mostly on the upper body, the blue is on the head and lower legs while the silver is used for connecting pieces such as the thighs and the feet. Black is used for the vehicle mode's wheels, all of which appear in this mode. A generous amount of silver plastic is used on this figure. You'll find it on the middle of the body, the middle of the arms, the smokestacks and the head. His eyes are blue and the windows on his chest and back are metallic blue. His fists are also painted blue. A bit of gold is found on his waist area. The most interesting deco choice (in my book) are the large Autobot symbols on his shoulders. The symbols are not tampographed, they are stickers, something that is quite rare nowadays. This is a wonderful retro touch and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

There are twenty points of articulation on this figure. This includes four on each arm and five in each leg. He also has waist articulation. His fists have 5mm ports, allowing him to hold weapons from other "Generations" figures (and others like the ones included with "Energon" figures). If you want to store the weapons away, you can attach them to 5mm ports on the back of the lower legs.

Transformation to Vehicle Mode:

  • Detach the weapons and set them aside for now.
  • Swing both feet down.
  • Push the lower legs together.
  • Swing the legs up.
  • Swing the waist section back
  • Swing the lower legs back.
  • The robot head rests on a panel that swings on a center hinge. Push one side in and rotate it then lock it into place.
  • Rotate the lower arms around.
  • Swing each of the arms forward and push the two shoulder sections together.
  • Swing each forearm section back towards the legs.
  • Swing up the panels from each forearm.
  • On each of the knee sections, there is a small blue tab. There are small sections of the forearms that can fit over those to help keep the vehicle mode more cohesive.
  • The weapons can be attached to the 5mm ports on the rear section of the vehicle. You may have to flip up the panel on the back first to reveal the ports.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Vehicle Mode: Whether it's coincidence or design, Optimus Prime's similarities to the unproduced "Hyperdrive" continue in this form. The front of the vehicle is flat but has some sleek styling such as a wide grille, curved panels on top with lights on them and the bottom of the cab's front end slopes outward, looking like he has a mini "cow catcher" of sorts. Other details echo past Optimus prime designs including the headlights with two lights inside and the way the smokestacks are set on the sides. Like the robot mode there are lots of nicely sculpted details in this form. This includes cross hatch patterns in the grille on the front, rectangular side view mirrors, windows on the sides and spare tanks on the sides near the rear wheel wells. It's true that many of these details have become very standard for "truck based" Transformers nowadays, but I still appreciate the attention to detail.

The red and blue plastic colors dominate this form, with red mostly forming the front and blue forming most of the rear. There are key parts that are silver including the row of lights on top of the cab and the foot pieces at the back. The wheels are black. Like the robot mode, there is a lot of silver paint used on the front grille, details above the headlights and the smokestacks. Gold is used on the headlights. On top of the cab is a tampographed Autobot symbol in silver and red. The front and side windows are painted metallic light blue. The deco is good, but I really wish that the sides of the wheels were painted. This detail used to get painted in all the time, but over the years it has begun to fall by the wayside. I had hoped for a larger toy like this we'd see the detail. The black wheels wind up looking plain and the sculpted detail doesn't pop the way it deserves to. That said, this is probably one of my biggest complaints about the figure.

Transformation to Torso Mode (Starting in robot mode):

  • Detach all weapons.
  • Push the robot head in.
  • Swing up the forearms and make sure the small red tabs on the forearms fit into the corresponding notches on the shoulders.
  • Swing the blue panel on the back down.
  • Swing open the panels on the back, revealing the Ultra Prime head.
  • Swing up the Ultra Prime head. The chest piece will swing up with it.
  • Rotate the waist piece around.
  • Swing up each leg at the hip. The joint is a ratchet joint. I recommend you move it up three "clicks".
  • Rotate each of the lower legs so the wheels face back.
  • Bend each of the lower legs down at the knee joint.
  • The inside of each lower leg has a silver panel. Swing it out and push it against the tab on the thighs to lock it into place.
  • Swing the blue waist panel down.
  • Limbs can be attached by sliding the connector pieces into the slots on the shoulders and legs.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Ultra Prime: One of the biggest wishes of fans since "Generations" Bruticus was released was that the central body/torso of the Combiner would be a Voyager Class figure, not a Deluxe. While Bruticus was a great "first shot" at a Combiner, Ultra Prime represents the next step in development and evolution of Combiners from Hasbro. "Ultra Prime" appears to be the name of any Combiner giant formed with Optimus Prime as the torso (unlike say, Superion who is formed from all the Aerialbots). This does bring to it some interesting questions since Combiners are usually just a mind formed from the synthesis of five minds. In this case, I get the sense that Optimus Prime becomes the "dominant" intelligence perhaps with contributions from anyone he's connected to. It's not just a cool toy, but also an interesting commentary on what a Combiner is in the Transformers universe.

Much of the detailing for the Ultra Prime mode was tucked away or out of sight in Optimus' robot mode. Now it gets to shine and there is quite a bit of cool sculpted detail here. Much of it is based on "Energon" Optimus Prime's design. The head design has a high creast, "antennae" on the side that resemble blades and two tubes on either side of the crest that look like small blasters. While these are largely inspired by "Energon" Optimus Prime's design, it should be noted these design elements also exist in other "Optimus" incarnations including Optimus Primal and Powermaster Optimus Prime. The chest design also borrows heaviy from "Energon" Optimus Prime. The way the "windshield panels" open up and reveal a sun-burst design inside is very similar to Energon Optimus. This "sun-burst" is likely a visual reference to the Matrix, which was a key design element for the "Unicron Trilogy" Optimus Prime figures.

Other elements that come from "Energon" Optimus include the two tube-like details right under the chest. These appear to be a callback to the headlight details on "Energon" Optimus. The two details that flank the "Matrix" on the chest are also similar in design to "Energon" Optimus. It's a really striking design and the sculpting looks great.

All that said, there has been some criticism of the chest panels and how odd they look open. I totally get this. I think part of the issue is how deep the panels are. They create this sense that there's something missing in the middle, and well, in a way something is. If you look right under the chest, there are two pegs sticking out. These are intended to allow a Legends Class figure to attach to his chest. Keep in mind this sculpt is also going to be used for Combiner Wars Motormaster. Those pegs are meant to attach to Blackjack, the Legends Class member of the Stunticon team who becomes chest armor for the Decepticon Combiner Menasor. While this design doesn't make a lot of sense for Optimus, it does for Motormaster. All that said, the solution is simple if you don't like it - close the chest panels. They look very cool together, givin ghim a futuristic look.

The main problem I have with this mode comes into play with the deco - or rather it's rather significant lack thereof. The red, silver and blue plastic colors reinforce the design as an "Optimus" but that's about it. Some silver and metallic light blue carries over on the sides from the robot mode. The panels that open up on the chest are painted red and the face has a silver mouthplate with bue eyes. Finally the crest is painted silver - but that's it. The chest, waist piece and thighs are all unpainted which makes the torso looking quite plain. If the "Matrix" detail had been painted it would improve the look of this mold tenfold.

Functionally the main articulation here is the head, which sits on a ball joint, allowing a wide range of articulation. The thigh sections can move where they meet the hips as well. All the other articulation then is found within the limbs that attach to Optimus. Each of the connection points have a slot where you slide the limb connector in and a locking mechanism that keeps it in place. The lock is a clip that works nicely in holding the limbs in. Another nice touch is the way the robot fists wind up on the back of the shoulder section. It allows you to attach 5mm peg weapons to give him shoulder mounted weaponry. Add in the ability of his weapons to have other weapons attached to them and Ultra Prime is a potential walking arsenal!

Final Thoughts: Optimus Prime is a really fun toy, and his size is huge compared to other Voyager Class Optimus Prime figures (such as the Classics figure). While some may have a problem with his brutish appearance, I think it looks great as a powerful looking upgrade to the character. I also appreciate the design nods to G1 and "Energon". The deco needs to be stronger however, especially in the torso mode. Overall however this is recommended!

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

combiner wars voyager class toy

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

combiner wars voyager class toy

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

combiner wars voyager class toy

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

combiner wars voyager class toy

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

combiner wars voyager class toy

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

combiner wars voyager class toy

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

combiner wars voyager class toy

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
