Global music star descends on Queenstown

One of the world’s biggest electronic music stars – DJ Carl Cox – will perform at the AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand Kawarau Bungy Centre this weekend.

The multi-award-winning British-born, Melbourne-based dance DJ will appear for one sold-out Queenstown concert at the iconic bungy venue this Sunday, February 6, from 6pm until midnight. In addition, concertgoers can take part in a rare offer to bungy jump from the historic Kawarau Bridge between 6-10pm, while Cox performs.

AJ Hackett Bungy New Zealand co-founder Henry van Asch says: “Carl is one of the biggest names in the global dance scene and we’re excited to have him play at the ‘World Home of Bungy’. We were blown away by the interest in the event, which sold out in under 20 minutes.”

Cox will be joined by two spectacular supporting acts, UK-based DJ Josh Butler and Australian DJ and music producer Juliet Fox, who’s best known for her work in the clubs of Ibiza, London and Berlin.

It’s not the first time the Kawarau Bungy Centre has hosted acclaimed international acts. Festivals such as Snow & Bass and Snow Machine have had DJs perform there in the past.

“The location and design of the Kawarau Bungy Centre makes it one of New Zealand’s most unique venues and is perfectly suited for these types of international acts. It’s not every day you can Bungy jump off a bridge while listening to Carl Cox perform live,” adds van Asch.

“When the right opportunity and the right artist comes along, it’s a no brainer for us to host a gig at the site. It’s fantastic that the Kawarau Bungy Centre is now on the map as one of New Zealand’s key live music destinations.”

Carl Cox promoter Audiology Touring group director Mitch Lowe says the venue offers concertgoers the rare opportunity to see an artist with Cox’s level of international credibility performing in close proximity.

“We are extremely excited to have Carl Cox perform at the Kawarau Bungy Centre,” Lowe says. “This will be a truly unique experience for Queenstown, and hopefully something that we can build on as a location for future tours.”

Carl Cox is a living breathing legend for any dance music connoisseur. His contribution to the growth of underground electronic dance music in the past decades is immense! As a DJ, in 1997 he was awarded the No.1 position in DJ Magazine, overtaking the likes of Sven Vath or Richie Hawtin. In 1991 he released his first single on Paul Oakenfold's label and maintained the techno passage throughout his career. He released his Intec Records imprint in 1999, which to this day, is one of the flagship record labels for house and techno. His legacy as techno's most prolific and long-lasting techno DJ on the planet is infinite. He holds the record for the most extended residency in Ibiza with over 14 consecutive years at Space Ibiza and is not showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. Carl Cox (born July 29th, 1962) is a British house and techno DJ, hailing from Oldham, Greater Manchester. He has performed extensively in clubs and worked on the radio, most notably for the BBC.

One of Britain’s best-known and, indeed, best-loved house DJs, Cox actually began his career in hardcore and rave in the eighties, where he commanded crowds at iconic clubs that included Heaven in London and The Hacienda in Manchester. His charisma and personality guaranteed him several radio jobs during his nineties heyday, including on Radio 1 - where had a monthly residency - as well as on Kiss FM. He’s released four solo albums to date - 1996’s ‘At the End of the Cliche’, 1999’s ‘Phuture 2000’, 2005’s ‘Second Sign’ and, in 2011, ‘All Roads Lead to the Dancefloor’. He’s put out a slew of single over the course of his career, too, but he’s best known for his live work.

His main focus these days are his two record labels, Intec Records and 23rd Century Records, but he continues to perform live; he curates a night at Manchester superclub the Warehouse Project on an annual basis, and also has his own stage at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida, Electric Daisy Carnival in New York, and the world’s biggest dance festival, Tomorrowland in Belgium. Carl Cox has been on the DJ scene for many years, starting his journey in the industry as a hardcore rave DJ. This section of his career saw him performing regularly at popular nightclubs, for BBC radio in a regular slot, and being hired out for prestigious events. Cox achieved enough success to form his own record label and continue producing his own music along side.

I was lucky enough to catch Cox at Ibiza DJing one of the main parties, and it really was the best DJ set I’ve ever seen. It really makes you appreciate the skill and talent needed to mix and perform live when you witness it first hand. He played through tonnes of mixes of his own, and also mixed up some covers and collaborations from other big artists. He played an adapted version of Dirty Bass, and everyone went mad, dancing and jumping around, jamming along to the incredible mix. He’s got a great stage presence and vibe when he’s performing, and his banter between and over the top of tracks kept everyone entertained and cheering for the music. I don’t think we stopped dancing from beginning to end, and the house music with catch hooks begged us to stay on our feet. If you want a good dance, Carl Cox is the DJ for you!

Radio 1 alumni Carl Cox has a large reputation and even larger following. The techno DJ and producer is revered on the circuit as a forefather of the dance explosion through the 90s and a man who has been present through the ever changing landscape of the British scene. Now into his 50s, he continues to take to the road partially for the fans and partially because he still adores to DJ and perform to the cheering crowds.

A regular attendee of Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival, his influence is felt Stateside and he holds his own against the newcomers with a live show of equally impressive production values. His secret weapon though is the sheer experience he has when it comes to working crowds as he knows exactly when to drop certain tracks and how to hold thousands in a moment and for exactly how long. This experience is something that cannot be taught, it is only achieved through hard graft and a lot of dedication and that is exactly what Carl Cox has given. The audience salutes him through the final beats of 'Two Paintings And A Drum'.

Carl Cox still dropping those Basey Beats after all these years! To see Mr Cox at home in Space has to be the best night of my life, (and that's saying something having spent some 50 years on this planet!) From start to finish his set was full of pumping hardcore beats with an excellent mix of Joe 90 thrown in to introduce the youngsters and keep those of a certain age happy all at the same time. The set was outstanding and the visuals amazing, a night and morning of pure unadulterated hard dance that encapsulates the phrase 'go hard or go home!' This closing party was not for the feint hearted, going on until 09:00 the next morning, followed by an after party on Bora Bora beach until 2pm. Carl Cox never fails to satisfy the desire to move your feet to a heavy beat in whatever venue he is playing, but Space Ibiza has to be the ultimate, oh yes, oh yes!

Carl Cox makes most of Rotorua visit

The weather wasn't always great but international DJ Carl Cox had a great time in Rotorua. The DJ is in New Zealand as part of a promotional tour for motorbike company Ducati. The tour dubbed the Revolution Tour 2011 sees the DJ and five others touring the country on the bikes. The group spent Monday and Tuesday in Rotorua and left the city yesterday. Cox has been keeping his fans in the loop about what he has been doing on his official Facebook page. On Wednesday morning Cox posted "penultimate ride of the tour today, Rotorua to Whitianga and the rain has stopped". Several people commented on Cox's Facebook page warning him about the smell in Rotorua, and also advised him on what to do. Destination Rotorua Tourism and Marketing posted, "Weather looking much better for your ride today. Glad you enjoyed your time here in Rotorua, anything else you need from us in future just shout!" Destination Rotorua general manager Don Gunn said he didn't know the group were in Rotorua until he saw their comments on Facebook. "We just wanted them to know we could help them with advice if they needed it," he said. The group were spotted at Rotorua's Lone Star restaurant where they were described as friendly and polite. They were also spotted at indoor attraction DriftKartz and bowling alley Strike Zone. One fan posted on Cox's Facebook page: "Stoked to bump in to you today was a little surprised to meet you in Rotorua! Hope the rest of the trip goes good bet you had a real blast Ducati rule!! Hopefully catch you in a festival here sometime." Cox also posted photos of his stay in Rotorua. The album, called Rotorua on a rainy day, has 29 photos of the group at different Rotorua attractions. Cox's visit comes only a week after three groups of celebrities stayed in the geyser city. Mystery surrounded their identities but American reality show star Kate Gosselin and her eight children were spotted at Rotorua airport.
