Open-Sided 4×4 Africa Safari Jeeps: Thrilling or Risky?

Safaris to Africa offer a unique opportunity to observe Africa’s enchanting wildlife up close, to capture breathtaking moments of natural beauty, and to feel the true pulse of the wild. The journey becomes even more thrilling with the use of open side 4×4 safari vehicles, offering panoramic views of the landscape and its inhabitants. However, when it comes to these  vehicles, one query often rises above the rest: “How safe are the open side safari vehicles?” This article aims to address that very question and help you feel more confident about your impending safari adventure.

The Idea Behind Open Side 4x4 Safari Vehicles

Open side 4×4 safari vehicles are designed, engineered and customised  for outdoor adventures. They are commonly used for game drives across many safari destinations in Africa – mostly South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.  But they are increasingly being used in other well-known safari destinations of Kenya and Tanzania, especially in private conservancies that offer luxury safaris.

Unlike standard vehicles, these 4x4s are built with open sides and sometimes open tops to provide better visibility for passengers.

These vehicles typically have elevated seats and roll bars for safety, ensuring a higher vantage point for viewing wildlife and the terrain

Are Open Safari Jeeps Safe? All precautions and common-sense approach employed, the answer is YES .  Most of Africa’s wildlife do not see persons in an open-sided safari vehicles as a threat. A leopard or lion will walk past you as you are seated in an open-sided vehicle & not give it a second look.  Many of these precautions are common sense: for example, talking in low voices or making no sudden movements.

Safety Measures in taken in Open Side safari Vehicles

Despite the ambience, convenience and  excitement provided by open-side 4×4 game viewing, safety concerns often crop up and always remain a major issue for potential safari-goers.

In the following paragraphs, we will examine the various safety measures in place to ensure the security of passengers aboard these vehicles.

Trained & Experienced Safari Guides

One of  most important factors in the safety of open side 4×4 safari vehicles is the presence of experienced and trained guides.

These safari guides sometimes double up as drivers.  Whatever the case might be, they are skilled drivers who understand the behavior of animals in their natural habitats. They are also trained to read the body language of animals and to react timely and  accordingly, to avoid stressing the animals or provoking a charge.

These guides also ensure that vehicles maintain a safe and respectful distance from the animals.

They follow strict regulations about when to switch off engines and when to leave a sighting, reducing any potential threats.

Furthermore, the safari guides educate passengers about safety protocols, such as not standing up in the vehicle or making loud noises. Such actions could attract unwanted attention from the wildlife.

Structural Safety Features on Open Side Safari Jeeps

The open side 4×4 safari vehicles themselves are built with safety in mind. They are designed for stability and can handle rough, off-road terrains without tipping. The roll bars or structure around the vehicle provides a safety shield and handholds for passengers. The elevated seating positions provide not only excellent viewing angles but also extra protection, placing passengers out of immediate reach of most animals.

It’s also important to remember that most wild animals are accustomed to these vehicles and perceive them as a single, non-threatening entity. They generally ignore the vehicle, focusing instead on their daily routines.

Limited Passenger Number on Open Side Safari Vehicles

Safari operators often limit the number of passengers per vehicle, ensuring that everyone has ample space and reducing the overall weight. This practice not only enhances the viewing experience but also aids in maintaining the vehicle’s stability, ensuring that it remains safe and balanced on rugged terrains.

Choosing a Reputable Safari Operator for your Open Side Jeep Safari

While safety measures are generally in place, the execution of these can vary among safari operators. Therefore, choosing a reputable safari operator plays a crucial role in your safety. Established operators prioritize safety, hiring experienced guides, maintaining their vehicles regularly, and adhering to strict safety protocols.

Check reviews and recommendations before choosing a safari operator. Look out for comments about their safety practices, the condition of their vehicles, and the expertise of their guides.

is jeep safari safe

Open side 4×4 safari vehicles offer an unparalleled experience of the African wilderness, creating lifetime memories for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. While there are inherent risks in any adventure, the safety measures in place, including trained guides, vehicle safety features, and controlled passenger numbers, aim to mitigate these risks.

Choosing a reputable safari operator and following their safety guidelines can also significantly enhance your safety. Remember, each safari adventure is unique, and the goal is to respect and appreciate the magnificent wildlife in its natural habitat. Therefore, while safety is important, so is responsible and ethical tourism. An open side 4×4 safari vehicle journey, when undertaken responsibly, can be an unforgettable, thrilling, yet safe experience.

What I Discovered at My First Easter Jeep Safari in Moab

Among soaring slabs of sandstone, thousands of Jeep fans converge and the brand tests out its newest concepts.

KristinVShaw

If you stand on Main Street in Moab in the middle of April, someone driving a Jeep product will pass by approximately every 2.1 seconds. Moab is alive with Jeep juju, so it must be time for the annual Easter Jeep Safari , a week-long celebration of all things off-road. Thousands of people who are members of the church of slick rock crawl all over the routes that skirt around Arches National Park and obstacles with colorful names like Hell's Revenge and Poison Spider. Every turn is magnificently carved by nature from cross-stratified Navajo sandstone.

This is my first Easter Jeep Safari , and I’m checking it off my mental bucket list with glee. After two flights broken up by a four-hour layover in Denver, I arrive at the Moab airport. It’s a tiny place with one gate in a compact terminal; the ground crew dumps all the luggage in one semi-flat outdoor bin after each flight. The airport is less than 20 minutes from downtown Moab, and I hop into a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 and fire up the V8 to get from there to the Hoodoo Moab Hotel.

Culture photo

Jeep’s “home away from home” is in the southeast quadrant of Utah, where red sandstone throws majestic shadows over the desert. The brand is very much at home here, and a substantial team flies in from Detroit to test out the newest crop of Jeep concepts. Easter Jeep Safari started out as a one-day affair in 1967, when the Moab Chamber of Commerce organized the event to attract tourists. Now, Jeep (and Jeepers) descends on Moab in force to drive on some of the toughest terrain Utah has to offer for off-roaders. While there, Jeep execs, product representatives, and engineers meet with customers who don’t pull any punches about what they like and don’t like about the brand’s vehicles.

Is this Heaven?

It is Holy Week, which means more than one thing to the people here. Red Rock 4 Wheelers , the club that leads the Easter Jeep Safari, calls Moab the “Mecca of four-wheeling” and there is the obvious reference to Easter Sunday, which marks the end of the event. Plus, during the Easter Jeep Safari there are a number of commandments to follow to keep the area as pristine as possible for generations to come.

Culture photo

“Don’t bust the crust!” is one of those directives, which means that you should avoid stepping on the cryptobiotic soil that serves as the desert’s delicate crust. Crypto, meaning ‘hidden’ plus biota, which means ‘life’ forms the base of the word that describes a microcosm of green-blue algae, lichen, moss, fungi, and other important life-giving substances.

A representative from the Bureau of Land Management gives us a stern talking-to about the flora and fauna of Moab and keeps a sharp eye on where the vehicles are putting their wheels. As I arrive in the top-of-the-food-chain Rubicon 392 in Sarge Green, she watches my feet when I dismount to make sure I’m not violating the ground beneath me. Throughout the week, Jeep is conscientious about how drivers treat the public land because it's a unique, special place for testing and visibility.

Staying on the marked trails is also expected, and refraining from tailgating is a smart idea. Don't be a jerk on the trail, basically.

Jeep Concepts Put to the Test

An array of concept vehicles is splayed out in front of me, including a few I have been eagerly waiting to see in person: the striking red-on-black D-Coder, a chopped Gladiator dubbed the Bob, and the all-electric Magneto 2.0. The first Magneto was on hand at the Easter Jeep Safari last spring , and while it looks very similar this year on the outside, the brand gave the concept a huge power boost. Now it makes 850 pound-feet of peak torque, which is more than three times the output of Magneto 1.0, and a staggering 625 horsepower.

Jeep boss Jim Morrison takes the co-pilot role as I climb into the front seat of the Magneto 2.0; it’s a big hop up into the EV, since it’s rocking 40-inch-tall tires mounted to 20-inch wheels. They’re massive. Morrison coaches me through a quick primer on using the unusual stickshift in the Wrangler concept, and we take off along the rocks. How a manual could possibly work in an electric vehicle requires a fairly detailed explanation, and since Caleb has already done that on The Drive , I don’t need to repeat it all. Check out his post here.

Culture photo

At this juncture, Morrison indicates that rowing your own Magneto won’t be an option for the masses. It’s too expensive to build.

Once I hop out of the Magneto, I'm ready to test out the Bob, named as such for the "bobbed" back end of a Gladiator. Luckily for me, off-road coach and Rebelle Rally champion Nena Barlow is available to drive with me and offer off-roading tips, and we wheel across the trail under the orange glow of the Bob's canvas lid. This is one of my favorites, with its stumpy shape and brightly-colored accessories, and the Bob is a terrific host on the rocks.

Barlow, however, prefers the Industrial Blue Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe . She appreciates the air suspension, sway-bar disconnect, and 20-inch metallic matte wheels wrapped in 33-inch BFG mud-terrain rubber. I like the custom upholstered seats with houndstooth inserts, which chief designer Mark Allen says is modeled after a jacket the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield would have worn.

Of course, I didn't miss a chance to drive the Kaiser Jeep M725 concept, which started out as a 1967 Kaiser Jeep M725 military ambulance. Custom rock rails protect the body and it rides on 20-inch, eight-lug Black Rhino Armory wheels wrapped in 40-inch tires. As soon as I started it up, my face broke into an ear-to-ear grin. Yes, it off-roads, too.

Culture photo

The population of Moab was 5,366 at the 2020 census, and it swells to at least four times that size during the Easter Jeep Safari. If the Chamber of Commerce members who kicked this event off in 1967 could see it now, they'd surely be astonished and delighted that their idea worked so well. Hotels dot the landscape and Jeep tour companies like Nena Barlow's are seeing steady work.

During Easter Jeep Safari, the general mood in town is of excitement and camaraderie; off-roaders exchange tips on routes and parts. Bilstein hosts a site and a number of wrapped vehicles tool around town, advertising the brand. BFGoodrich hosts a garage right on Main Street and it's open to all. You bring the parts and they'll fix just about anything for you, gratis, whether or not your vehicle is riding on any of the BFGoodrich brand tires . They'll even swap out an engine if they have to, one of the mechanics told me. That's pretty dang generous.

As I leave Moab, I stop at the local rocks and fossils shop for a souvenir in the hopes that it will hold me over until my next visit. I already can't wait for 2023.

Seating Arrangement On the Open Safari Jeep

As the name suggests, they are open on both sides, making them ideal for game viewing, photography,  bird-watching while offering an intimate and real connection with the African wilderness.

It is important to note that since these vehicles are mostly stationed in the safari camps and lodge – and so there are fewer them stationed there.  That means one will almost always have to content with sharing  with other guests from the camp or lodge where they are staying. If you prefer to have exclusive use of an open vehicle this needs to be arranged, at extra cost, in advance. Some open safari jeeps  are designed with tiered seating, so that nobody’s view is blocked by the person in front of them.

Protection from the Weather Elements

Due to their being open, there is obviously limited protection from the the elements, it is therefore  vital that you protect yourself against the sun. Hats, scarves and windbreakers are all excellent shields from fierce and hot Ultra Violet rays.  Some of these vehicles do have canvas/plastic canopies that can be closed, if the weather becomes un co-operative. Thunderstorms in Africa can be wild, and come on within minutes!

Jeep Reveals More Concept Teasers Ahead of 2023 Easter Jeep Safari

Jeep had previously shown off a couple of Wrangler-based teasers, but has now hinted at a modified Grand Cherokee that will be shown at the Easter Jeep Safari.

2023 easter jeep safari concept teaser

  • The brand uses the event, now in its 57 th year, as a showcase for new concept vehicles.
  • The company released the first two "trail markers" hinting at what it will bring to the event scheduled for April 1–9, 2023.

UPDATE 3/16/23: Jeep revealed three new teasers for the concepts that will debut at the Easter Jeep Safari. The first image, seen above, appears to show the same green vehicle that was previously teased with a two-door pickup body. The other two images, seen at the bottom of this article, appear show a Gladiator or Wrangler Rubicon and a Grand Cherokee in red and purple color schemes without any obvious modifications.

Jeep Nation rejoice! The Easter Jeep Safari is nearly upon us. This year will mark the 57 th Safari, and true to form, Jeep has started hinting at the wild concepts it will bring. The first two teasers—or "trail markers," as Jeep is calling them—were released today. Rather than images or renderings, the company showed off two eye-catching sketches.

2023 easter jeep safari concept teaser

The first sketch shows what looks to be a muscled-up two-door version of the Gladiator truck wearing a wide set of knobby off-road-ready tires hiding under what look to be the largest fenders we've ever spotted on a Jeep. From what we can tell by squinting through the blinding green haze of the sketch, the driver's-side mirror has migrated from the A-pillar and now rests directly in front of the enlarged front fender.

2023 easter jeep safari concept teaser

The second sketch has a bit more muted color scheme, which seems to be Jeep's way of showing off the blue-trimmed 4xe font. This concept looks like a more straightforward Wrangler Rubicon off-roader, and we can once again spot enlarged fenders. Unlike in the Green Giant sketch, the mirror placement in this sketch look standard. One element that's not standard is that the doors have been replaced by tube half-doors, while the rear windows are replaced by some sort of Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) utility rack.

2023 easter jeep safari concept teaser

Last year Jeep brought a whopping seven concept vehicles to the event. We think it's a safe bet that they will bring at least that many this year as well. Two more each week between now and the start of the Easter Jeep Safari would bring the total to eight, topping last year's figure.

The Definitive Guide to a Jeep Safari in Dubai

Are you looking for one of the most fun things to do in the UAE? Then head into the desert & go on an adrenaline-fueled jeep safari in Dubai!

jeep safari dubai

We sped up a sand dune at a steep 45-degree angle. All I could see was bright blue sky, the occasional fluffy cloud, and that was it. The blue abyss.

Then, suddenly, we plummeted down the other side of the dune at breakneck speed, everyone in the car screaming with a mixture of fear and delight. When I signed up for a jeep safari in Dubai, I had no idea it’d be this much fun!

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in United Arab Emirates then look no further than a Dubai jeep safari. This is when you take a 4X4 jeep out into the desert and thrash it around the sand dunes. It’s one of those high-octane activities that’ll keep you grinning from ear to ear all day long.

In this blog post I’ll go into everything you need to know about going on a jeep safari in Dubai including how much a tour costs, what’s included in the price and a load of other practical information too.

So, if you want an adventure like no other then read on!

If you’re planning a trip to the Middle East , then check out my guides to the UAE , Dubai and Oman for a little bit of inspiration.

My Dubai jeep safari experience

tours in dubai

There are a number of tours to choose from online but I wanted one that was a mixture of adrenaline and culture . And yes, they do exist!

All of the tours offer hotel pick up and drop off, so I was picked up from my hotel in the afternoon at around 3pm. One of the most popular pick up points is from Jumeirah Beach. We also picked up a few other people so there were 5 of us in total in our jeep (including our driver Hussan.)

The Masyaf Desert is approximately 40kms away from Dubai, so it’s a fair drive. Also, because you’re driving through the traffic of the city this can take well over an hour. I sat in the front so I got to quiz Hussan all about living in Dubai and the tour for the afternoon. He promised me I’d scream like I’ve never screamed before. It sounded a little perverse but I liked that guarantee!

dubai desert safari

Once you leave the city behind though it’s easy driving until you start seeing the rolling sand dunes and camels lazily crossing the road. I love that there are camels just wandering here – it makes you feel like you’re in Lawrence of Arabia .

When we hit the edge of the desert, our driver Hussan let out most of the air in our jeep tires. This makes it a lot easier driving across the sand dunes as you get more traction.

From that point on it was pure adrenaline. Hussan thrashed our car around the desert with all of us screaming in delight. We flew over sand dunes so fast I thought we’d topple over other side, and at times so much sand was in the air that it completely covered our windscreen.

Even though it was the edge-of-your-seat driving (the whole point of the Dubai jeep safari experience), it never felt like we were going to crash at any point at all.

It was just pure, unadulterated fun and I can’t recommend this experience enough. And I did scream like I’ve never screamed before!

The Bedouin camp experience

is jeep safari safe

The jeep safari lasted for around 30 minutes which is probably the right about of time. Any longer and I would’ve burst a lung from shouting so much.

Once we had finished up, all the jeeps on our tour parked in a circle just as the sun was starting to set. There are so many dunes here that it’s easy to hide behind one and not be seen by the other Dubai desert safari tours, so it feels secluded and like you’ve got the place to yourself.

As you’d expect being in the heart of the desert, the sunset was spectacular. Just make sure you bring your camera along to take some shots of it. I mean, look at how beautiful this place is.

sunset in dubai

As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon we jumped back in our jeeps and headed off to a Bedouin camp for the cultural element of our tour.

The Bedouin experience consisted of sitting around a camp site in the middle of the desert listening to Arabic music. After a while a couple of dancers came out – first a traditional belly dancer and then a Whirling Dervish . How they keep on spinning without being sick I will never know!

All while this is going on there’s a big buffet dinner of traditional Arabic meze and it was delicious. Also, you can buy alcoholic drinks like beer which is a massive surprise in the UAE . All soft drinks are included in the price.

bedouin dancing

Our camp also had a fairly big sand dune you could climb up and then sandboard back down for another fun activity.

And the stars, how could I not mention the stars! I really recommend walking away from the lights of the camp and staring up at the night sky because it is absolutely beautiful.

Once the music and dancing had finished, we jumped back in our jeeps to head back into Dubai after an incredible day in the desert.

Desert safari price: How much does it cost?

dubai safari dinner

Good question! There are a number of different tour to choose from and the cost varies quite a lot.

Some tours include additional extras like camel safari or an ATV experience in the desert, so obviously these cost a lot more.

Saying that, I thought my tour was extremely good value . It cost £42 (US$50) per person and as I’ve mentioned, that included hotel pick up and drop off, all food and drink, and the desert safari experience in itself.

Just as a note, you might see these tours advertised as Dubai dune bashing – that’s just another name for the same tour.

Desert safari deals

desert safari

I would always advise checking what desert safari deals are around when you’re in Dubai.

If you’re short on time though, I’ve found this tour at GetYourGuide is consistently one of the cheapest around so this is always a good place to start. The often have deals so make sure you keep checking before you book!

Different desert safari tours

dubai desert tours

There are so many different desert safari tours that it’d take me forever listing them all here, but these are the three most popular:

  • Dubai: Hot Air Balloon Ride – this is one of the best air balloon rides you can do in the United Arab Emirates
  • Dubai Desert Safari Sandboarding, Camels & Quad Bike – this is an excellent tour if you’d prefer to go earlier in the morning
  • Heritage Desert Safari from Dubai – often this includes driving around in a vintage Land Rover in the Dubai desert conservation reserve

Here are a few other different tours for you too:

Are there other people on the tour?

desert safair tours

Yes, there are.

Because there are a number of different tours and companies, often you’ll drive in a big convoy of cars. We had around 12 other cars on our Dubai jeep safari, so you will be with other people.

Saying that, we didn’t really speak to that many other people apart from other couple in our jeep. Once we got to the Bedouin camp we had a table to ourselves, so this is a great experience for couples.

Is a desert safari safe?

sunset desert safari

Yes, it is. Obviously as this is a high-adrenaline activity it’s not advised to do it if you’re pregnant or elderly.

Also, because you’re being thrown around the car, beware of hitting your head or your arms on the car windows. That’s pretty much the only way you can hurt yourself.

For the jeep, also beware that you can break down. Most tours bring a back-up jeep, so if you do break down then you’ll quickly be moved to another jeep so you don’t miss out on the experience.

Top tips for your jeep safari in Dubai

  • If you suffer from car sickness make sure you take some tablets before you hit the desert. You really get thrown around in the back on the jeep and at times it feels like a rollercoaster, so take those travel sickness pills! It’s advised you take these an hour before the tour.
  • For men I’d recommend flip-flops or espadrilles and for women sandals. Sand gets everywhere and it’s annoying if you’ve got trainers on
  • Also, I’d recommend bringing a hut and sunglasses are an absolute must to avoid the glare off the sand
  • Like most deserts around the world, as soon as the sun sets it can get pretty cold. Make sure you take an extra layer of clothes with you for the evening
  • If you want to buy beer or some souvenirs at the Bedouin camp then bring along some money
  • It’s also a good idea to tip your driver for the day too

safari dubai

For me, the desert jeep safari was one of my favourite activities while I was in the UAE . It’s that perfect mix of doing something fun in the afternoon and then something cultural in the evening.

Hopefully you found this blog post useful. If you’re about to go on a desert safari yourself then I really hope you have an incredible time!

Unleashing the Power of Off-Road Driving

The jeeps used for Fethiye Jeep Safari are specially designed to provide an exhilarating off-road driving experience. Equipped with powerful engines and four-wheel drive systems, these jeeps can tackle even the most challenging terrain.

The high ground clearance and strong suspension system of the jeeps allow them to navigate through rocky roads, steep inclines, and uneven surfaces with ease.

Moreover, the tour operators pay great attention to maintaining the vehicles in top condition to ensure that they can withstand the rough conditions encountered during the safari.

Each jeep undergoes regular checks and servicing by experienced mechanics before every trip. This ensures that all vehicles are fully functional, safe for passengers, and ready for an adrenaline-fueled adventure.

Safety First: How Tour Operators Ensure a Safe Experience

Tour operators prioritize safety during Fethiye Jeep Safari tours and take several measures to minimize risks and ensure a safe experience for all participants.

Each jeep is manned by an experienced driver who has undergone specialized training on off-road driving techniques, including how to handle different terrains safely.

Furthermore, strict safety guidelines are implemented throughout the tour by trained guides who ride along in separate support vehicles.

These guidelines include prohibiting speeding or reckless driving, wearing seatbelts at all times during the trip, and avoiding dangerous maneuvers that could put passengers at risk.

Additionally, each jeep is equipped with communication devices such as radios or mobile phones that enable drivers to keep in touch with support staff at all times in case of emergencies or unexpected events.

Immerse in the Natural Pools

During the Fethiye Jeep Safari, you will get a chance to take a dip in some of the most beautiful natural pools in Turkey.

The water is crystal clear and refreshing, and it provides an excellent opportunity for a swim, especially during hot summer days.

These pools are located in secluded areas that are only accessible through off-road paths that are included in the route of the safari tour. Swimming in these natural pools is not only fun but also therapeutic for the body and soul.

The minerals present in the water can help to heal muscle tension and reduce stress levels. Additionally, these areas offer breathtaking views of nature that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

Experience Turkish Culture with Visits to Local Villages

One of the highlights of Fethiye Jeep Safari is visiting local villages to experience Turkish culture first-hand.

During these visits, you will have an opportunity to interact with locals, taste traditional Turkish cuisine, learn about local customs and traditions, see how they make handicrafts such as pottery or carpets.

Most villages offer visitors traditional Turkish tea that is usually served with gozleme (Turkish pancakes) or baklava (a sweet pastry).

This experience is a great way to immerse yourself in local culture and learn about how people live outside tourist hotspots.

Enjoy Traditional Turkish Cuisine

Food plays an integral part when it comes to immersing oneself into any different culture.

On this tour, you get a chance to indulge yourself with some mouth-watering traditional Turkish cuisine prepared by locals from fresh ingredients found around them.

Tavuk Döner

The food on this tour ranges from appetizers like meze platters filled with hummus salads stuffed grape leaves or patlican salatasi (eggplant salad) followed by kebabs, stews, and succulent seafood all washed down with the national drink of Turkey – Raki.

The meals are served in beautiful outdoor settings with stunning views of the surrounding nature that will make your meal even more enjoyable.

All these activities combine to create an unforgettable experience for visitors. They enhance the overall enjoyment and offer a glimpse into Turkish culture and way of life.

One such site is Tlos Ancient City, which dates back to the 4th century BC.

Located on a hilltop overlooking fertile plains, this site offers visitors breathtaking views and plenty of photo opportunities. The ruins include a stadium, baths, agora, theater, cisterns, and necropolis.

Another site worth visiting is Saklikent Gorge which was once part of the Lycian civilization’s kingdom during the Hellenistic period. It consists of a narrow canyon carved by a mountain stream over thousands of years with towering cliffs reaching as high as 300 meters.

Fethiye Jeep Safari an unforgettable adventure for those seeking something beyond the typical tourist experience.

Tips & Recommendations

What to wear/bring during the safari.

It is essential to dress comfortably for the Fethiye Jeep Safari as it is a long off-road adventure.

Participants should wear light and loose-fitting clothing, allowing for ease of movement and breathability in warm weather.

Shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops are ideal clothes to wear on the trip. However, closed-toe shoes or sneakers are recommended for safety reasons.

Since the region can get quite hot during summers, sunscreen with high SPF should be applied before starting the journey. Additionally, sunglasses and hats will protect participants from direct sunlight while enjoying the views.

Recommendations

Participants must follow all safety instructions provided by tour operators. It is essential to buckle up their seat belts while in motion and avoid taking unnecessary risks while driving off-road.

They should carry a small bag or backpack containing essentials such as water bottles, snacks or energy bars, personal identification/driver’s license and cash while on tour.

Sunset at sea after a safari trip to Fethiye

It is highly recommended that participants bring their cameras or smartphones to capture some of the stunning landscapes on offer during Fethiye Jeep Safari.

Also, tourists are advised not to forget their swimwear (if they wish to swim at stops en route) and towels for drying off after taking a dip.

Pricing for Fethiye Jeep Safari

The cost of participating in a Fethiye Jeep Safari adventure can range from as low as $20 up to $45, varying depending on several factors.

T hese include the specifics of the route, the availability of lunch, and the condition of the jeeps used in the safari.

The Basic Program

If you’re looking for a cost-effective option, you might opt for a basic program which starts at $20.

This option typically includes the jeep safari experience, guided by an expert, who will navigate the challenging terrains of the tour and introduce you to the captivating beauty of Fethiye.

Do note that meals may not be included in this basic package, so you might want to bring along your snacks and refreshments.

The Premium Program

For a more comprehensive experience, you might want to consider the premium program, which goes up to $45. This package often includes an enhanced route that covers more scenic points and historical sites.

Furthermore, it usually incorporates a delicious traditional Turkish lunch, allowing you to savor local flavors in beautiful outdoor settings. The jeeps used in this program are typically in top condition and may offer superior comfort and performance.

To get the most out of your Fethiye Jeep Safari experience, consider your preferences and what you hope to get from the tour.

If you’re a foodie who’s keen on trying Turkish cuisine or someone who doesn’t want to worry about packing food, the premium program could be worth the additional cost.

On the other hand, if you’re mainly interested in the off-road adventure and don’t mind packing your lunch, the basic program could be an excellent choice.

Experiencing Fethiye Jeep Safari is an excellent way of exploring Turkey’s magnificent natural beauty beyond its usual tourist destinations.

Tourists who participate in this activity will have memories that will last a lifetime – from cruising through rugged terrains in comfortable Jeeps with expert drivers who know how best to navigate through these challenging terrains!

With plenty of stops along the way for swimming in natural pools or experiencing local culture by visiting nearby villages – there’s no shortage of things to do on this exciting adventure!

While it is essential to follow safety instructions and recommendations, tourists should also let go of any inhibitions and soak in the experience. Fethiye Jeep Safari offers an unforgettable adventure that is worth every penny spent!

Important Details About 2023 Easter Jeep Safari

The 2023 Easter Jeep Safari takes place from Saturday, April 1st to Sunday, April 9th. This nine-day event involves participants riding on trails of varying difficulty set up by the Red Rock 4-Wheeler Club through the Moab area. Whether you are a hard-core adventure enthusiast or a Sunday driver, there is something for you. Currently, there are 42 designated trails ranging from dirt roads to extreme treks requiring modified vehicles.

There are only two main rules at this event. First: every vehicle must be street legal and have a metal roll bar. And second: every rig must be safe for legal operation in Utah. If your Jeep meets those requirements, it should be fair game.

All participants must pre-register beforehand, so do your planning in advance. Occasionally, for some trails, there is availability on the day of the event. You can check the Spanish Trail Area for any openings. If this sounds like the event for you, keep reading.

History Behind the Easter Jeep Safari

The first Easter Jeep Safari was held in 1967 by the Moab Chamber of Commerce. The event started as just a single-day organized ride. Since then, it has grown into the annual tradition fans know and love today. In the 1980s the event was taken over by the Red Rock 4-Wheeler Club. The last Saturday of the event, known as Big Saturday, includes a massive parade of 4x4 vehicles, all departing downtown Moab at the same time, as a nod to its origins.

Why You Should Attend the Easter Jeep Safari

blog-easter-jeep-jedco-trail-biter-t-shirt

The Easter Jeep Safari is an annual tradition. Taking place in scenic Moab, Utah , the event is an unparalleled experience. With the multitude of trails, even less experienced visitors can enjoy their first taste of off-roading. All trails are set up and led by experienced members of the Red Rock 4-Wheeler Club, ensuring you have peace of mind during your ride. Surrounded by other Jeep enthusiasts, it's the perfect place to be around like-minded Jeepers who love their off-roading machines as much as you do.

This is a social event that allows adventure-seekers the chance to enjoy the wilderness from the comfort of their vehicles. Convoys at each respective trail start at roughly 9 am. At particularly challenging obstacles, a team member will guide you through that section of the trail. Even if you do not own a Jeep, you can still attend this event. However, 4-Wheelers or ATVs are not allowed, and only street-legal vehicles are permitted.

Here Is How You Can Deck Out Your Jeep For The Easter Jeep Safari

The Easter Jeep Safari is all about celebrating the Jeep. The best way to enjoy the trails is in one of Jeep’s conceptual vehicles, designed specifically for this annual event. Looking at these custom-designed vehicles is the best way for you to get inspiration to deck out your Jeep. Last year, Jeep unveiled 10 new concept vehicles  for the 2022 Easter Jeep Safari, to suit the needs of Jeep enthusiasts and off-roading adventurers alike.

The most sought-after concept was the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Jeep Gladiator. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe is a revolutionary new vehicle that is suited for outdoor adventure and environmentalism. It boasts a 375 horsepower plug-in hybrid electric powertrain. The Jeep Gladiator concept is an off-roader’s dream, decked out with a unique open-air design, King coils and bypass shocks, steel bumpers to improve departure angles, a three-inch lift, and 40-inch tires. While we loved last year’s concepts, we can’t wait to see what Jeep has cooking for Easter Jeep Safari 2023.

5 Things To Carry For An Ultimate Easter Jeep Safari Experience

While your guides will provide you with a safe and fun experience, participants are expected to pack everything they may need along the way. If you’re going to be part of this year’s event, the first thing you’ll need is your most important possession: your four-wheel-drive vehicle. We recommend a Jeep (no surprise there) but other off-roading machines are welcome.

Second, you’ll want to pack any food, water, and alcoholic beverages you might need for the trip. There are stores in Moab but with the crowds, there are also long lines. Save time and money by packing your own supplies.

Third, you’ll want to prepare for the sun. Bring along sun lotion and plenty of water, both of which are a must whenever venturing out into the red rocks of Moab, Utah. Temperatures this time of year can reach into the mid-’80s . With very little natural shade, you could be in for a hot ride.

blog-easter-jeep-jedco-tours-t-shirt

Fourth, layered clothing is a great idea in the high desert climate. The temps tend to be milder in the spring, but rapid weather changes can occur. You’ll want to make sure you’re comfortable enough to have fun.

Lastly, the Red Rock 4-Wheeler Club encourages all participants to carry a safety kit. This should contain a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, tow strap, spare tire, and a jack. That way, you’ll be prepared for anything on the trail.

The Best Easter Jeep Safari Ever

When the official event started in 1967, it was a single-day ride that took place on the Saturday before Easter. Since then, the Easter Jeep Safari has grown substantially, encompassing nine days and over 2,000 participants . Many changes have been made over the event's 55-year history. While the event is bigger and better than ever, the 1978 Jeep Safari is legendary.

That year, more people came to watch the Saturday Jeep Safari and Sand Drag Races than ever before. With the number of participants and spectators, Moab’s population nearly doubled in size. There were about 1,500 paying customers at the Safari, which meant that the races could have larger purses. An astonishing 473 rigs turned out to participate in the event. The positive reception among locals and participants alike ensured that Safari would continue for decades to come.

Every Jeep enthusiast should experience the Easter Jeep Safari at least once. The event is an awesome way to test your rig on gnarly trails amid breathtaking scenery. But with knowledgeable guides and trails of varying difficulty, it’s also a safe first step for people interested in getting into back-country driving. This annual event puts Moab on the map for Jeep lovers each year and makes great memories for its participants. If you're looking for an extended stay in the beautiful red rocks of Moab, Utah with a few thousand other Jeep fans, then the Easter Jeep Safari is for you. Check out the Red Rock 4-Wheeler Club to start planning your epic trip today.

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dispatcher Concept is a retro-inspired off-road hybrid

This year's Easter Jeep Safari has delivered the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dispatcher concept off-roader, which highlights the capability of the hybrid 4xe platform while celebrating the nostalgia of the post-war Jeeps enjoyed by service members returning to the home front.

The new Dispatcher concept SUV begins with a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe powered by the 2.0-liter I-4 plug-in hybrid setup. Element 115 Green paint will grab your attention and the Jeep’s rolling stock will hold it—36-inch Traxion pizza cutters and cream-colored 16x7-inch steel wheels.

A new lifted suspension

Dana 50 axles route power to the dirt while a Jeep Performance Parts suspension kit, featuring Bilstein dampers, handles bump absorption.

A flatfender homage on the hood

WILLYS is stamped into the sides of the hood in homage to the flat-fender Jeeps of the past.

A modern classic warn winch

Up front, a classic-looking-yet-totally-new Warn M8274 winch, spooled with synthetic rope, sits on the stubby bumper.

The custom badging

Where you’d normally find the “Trail Rated” badge, the Jeep designers fashioned a custom badge highlighting how Jeep grilles have evolved from the wartime 4x4s of yore to the present.

The low-backed seats

What about those seats? They’re modern units sans headrest for that classic low-back look and feel, trimmed in saddle leather and houndstooth cloth. The Jeep Performance Parts vinyl floor underfoot makes post-trail cleanups a cinch.

There's onboard air

Need to air up those tires after a day on the trails? The Jeep Performance Parts air compressor stealthily mounted within the tailgate is on deck.

Don't forget to pop bottles

The clutch of Jeep concepts is never complete without a way to facilitate post-trail celebrations. Beside the spare tire is a handy bottle opener for those frosty campsite cream sodas.

You can check out a full gallery of the new Jeep Wrangler 4xe Dispatcher concept right here, or read more about this year's Easter Jeep Safari at this link .

Is Going on Safari Dangerous?

Tips on how to stay safe

is jeep safari safe

moodboard / Getty Images

Every safari has an element of danger; that's what makes it exciting. While many of the animals you'll encounter can be dangerous , the four that you really have to watch out for are—elephant, lion, buffalo , and hippo (add crocodiles to that list if you're near water).

Most safari operators and guides at the various lodges and game reserves will stress basic precautions you need to take while game viewing. It will also help if you follow basic safari etiquette. If you are on safari in smaller, more remote game parks or encounter wildlife outside of game parks, here are some general rules to follow:

If You Are in a Vehicle

  • Always stay in your car. When driving in a game park remain in your vehicle. Only get out at designated "hides" and follow the rules that will be posted. There have been several fatalities that occurred because a hapless tourist has wandered out of their vehicle, camera in hand, to get a closer shot of an elephant or lion. It may sound silly, but it happens.
  • Don't stand up or stick anything out of the car . Many safari vehicles are open-topped, and the wildlife is generally accustomed to these. But, if you stand up or wave something around on the side, some animals will get annoyed and consequently aggressive. You also have to remember that poaching is rife in many areas, and anything that looks like a gun can trigger a very nasty response from a wild animal.
  • Drive slowly and carefully . During the wet season, the grass can get quite high, and it's not always possible to tell when a large buffalo or elephant will decide to step into the middle of the road. Remember, you have to stop if this happens. Buffalos and elephants are not in the least bit afraid or impressed by you or your car.
  • Keep your windows up . If you are in a car with windows, it's better to keep them closed. You could end up being harassed by baboons as you drive through the more popular game parks. They are so habituated to cars they are not afraid to leap upon them and dent the roof. You don't want one inside your vehicle.

If You Are on Foot

If you are on a walking safari, you will no doubt be briefed on safety by your guides. But, there are times when you'll be walking in Africa and encounter wildlife without a guide. You could run into elephants even in the middle of town. Baboons are also a menace in many places and a lot larger than you think. Here are some basic tips if you encounter wildlife eye to eye:

  • Try and stay downwind from the animal . If the animal catches your scent, it will know you are there, and you have no idea whether this will make it angry or afraid.
  • If an animal you approach looks hostile, make sure you are not in the way of its escape route . Give the animal a clear birth and don't make any noise to aggravate the situation further.
  • Walk away slowly . If you encounter an animal that doesn't like your presence move back slowly and quietly.
  • Avoid swimming in rivers or lakes unless you are absolutely sure there are no hippos or crocodiles. Hippos are the most dangerous of all the big animals. They feed on the banks of the river, and if they sense danger will charge and attack whatever lies in their path in order to get back to the safety of the water.
  • If you are camping out in the open, always make sure you have something covering you even if it's just a mosquito net. Hyenas like to check out camps for leftover food and are especially attracted to protruding objects, so keep your feet and nose inside that tent or net.
  • Always wear boots and socks when walking around the bush . There are plenty of venomous snakes and scorpions around that could bite you.
  • Don't walk around at night in areas where you know there is wildlife present that can be potentially harmful to you. That includes the beaches and around lakes where hippos graze between tents on a camping safari. Also, be careful in towns. Hyenas wander around freely in the capital city of Lilongwe in Malawi, so always be cautious.

Statement of the Russian section of the IWA in relation to events in Khimki

We, militants of the Confederation of Revolutionary Anarcho-syndicalists (Section of the International Workers Association in Russia) are in full solidarity with the residents of Khimki and with environmental community, who protest against the barbaric destruction of the forest Khimki during the construction of railroad route. We consider for intolerable that the city authorities are using gang of neo-Nazi thugs to fight the defenders of the forest.

Recognizing the validity and fairness of civil resistance, we warn at the same time against any attempts to translate an just public outrage in the nationalist channel. In this regard, we are appalled that in the recent protests in front of Khimki Administration, some persons acting on behalf of the "anti-fascists" and "anarchists", chanted chauvinistic slogans in support of the "Russian" forest, unfurled banners, deliberately written in Church Slavonic fonts, and called the current power "occupational", like German Nazis in 1941. We are confident that our environment does not belong to any individual "people" or "ethnicity", but is the common heritage of mankind and the key to its survival. Calls to protect "Russian" forest from certain alien invaders (as implied, "non-Russian") only fueled the nationalist sentiments and are completely unacceptable in the mouths of people who consider themselves "anti-fascists" and, moreover, anarchists!

We are outraged by the attempts of people, borrowing nationalistic slogans, to use for self-promouting the name of Stanislav Markelov who was a convinced antinatsionalist. We remember that in the pages of the “Red Book of Antifa" Stanislaw called leftists to abandon patriotic phrases. Attempts to invoke his name in the course of action under nationalist slogans are not allowed.

REPRESSIONS IN MOSCOW

In the morning on July 29, libertarian antifascist Alexey Gaskarov was arrested on the street by people in civilian clothes and taken to an unknown destination. As it turned out they were employees of the so called “Anti-Extremist Center" of police. They broke most of the rules, which are described in the Law. That night at his apartment was searched without a warrant or any other providing paper, there was no inventory of the property and witnesses.

Alexey is known in social amnd libertarian circles of Moscow and is opposed to violence and pogrom-style actions. He was never seen in the nationalist speeches. Therefore, it is clear that imposing on him the blame for the attack on the building of Khimki administration, during which slogans of national-patriotic nature were shot, the authorities try now to discredit the independent social movement.

Alexey is charged under "hooliganism". On July 31 the process began, and Alexey can obtain until 7 years of prison!

We encourage to disseminate this information and to protest.

Freedom for Alexey Gaskarov!

Look, I agree that it is most important to discuss if "save Russian forest" is a chauvinistic slogan, or if Church Slavonic fonts are politically correct from point of view of anarchist political theory, but this is perhaps not the most appropriate moment.

But thanks for sharing with us the position of the mighty international, I am sure it entertained many in this board.

BTW, anyone know where I may download anarcho-syndicalistically correct fonts, or ensure that my current fonts are not fascist?

The question about slogans is a question about action. Moreover, there was a cry "Beat the jews" ("Bey zhidow"). One can listen it in you tube film about action.

So, I propose don`t glorify this action and instead to help to anarchist comrade Gaskarov which is now in process against him (in false relation with the case). We will inform about address for send protest e-letters and faxes

I think the shout is very unclear, it is by one person (perhaps random idiot from the city) and only once. If it was "bey jidov", I am rather sure he would have been beaten up if he did it other time and more clearly.

At this time 3.37/3.38 the

At this time 3.37/3.38 the man, running behind the camera, shouts "Mercedes", it's rhyme to the slogan "russkiy les" (russian forest), maybe because this man didn't like the slogan or it's joke. Russian is my mother-tongue, I didn't hear any "bey jidov" and other fucking slogans on this video! Many people dislike this slogan, I mean "russian forest", though it was an irony to nazi scum's chant. It's just an attempt to show nazi, that they haven't anything, we just want to take back what they stole, the name of nation couldn't be a part of nazi "culture"! it's what it is all about! I can't understand you, why are you against us, why do you want to put us down? Try to understand at first, and when - write such things!

Many people hear about

Many people hear about "zhidy" and your tentatives are false. Of course, it was not cleare prononced. Of course, it was neither "official" slogan not position of majority of demonstrants. The question is another: by many antifa in Russia patriotism is tolerable.

In my opinion, such jokes are impossible! Moreover in Russia.

And an other question: you can imagine German antifa crying "Save GERMAN forest" and writing slogans with Gothic font? ))

>Many people hear about

>Many people hear about "zhidy" who are that people? Where you can hear "zhidy"?? I DON'T HEAR, for the life of me! You know, you act like fucking nazi scum, who write, that they see there like people throw up arms in "zeig heil", while people throw up fists! What do you want??

>patriotism is tolerable. Not for me, not for my friens. Yes it's problem, that there are "public-spirited" antifa, but it's our problem, and we fight with it, like with nazism. Don't draw an analogy between Germany and Russia, everyone knows that it's not the same!

>such jokes are impossible! Do you mean "mercedes" is impossible? Well, you are just dull beggar then!

Actually, I also heard

Actually, I also heard "Mercedes" but I could not figure out why someone would shout that, so I thought "bey jidov" would also be possible. But now I think "mercedes" is a more likely explanation, just as a joke from someone who thought it rhymes with "russkiy les".

Khimki Battle Stirs Press Freedom Fears

10 August 2010

By Alexander Bratersky

An ongoing tussle over the Khimki forest is raising fears that media freedoms are in jeopardy, with the police pressuring journalists into collaborating or revealing their sources of information, media freedom activists said Monday.

In the most recent incident, investigators on Monday removed Alexander Litoi, a reporter for the liberal Novaya Gazeta daily, from a train in the Moscow region to question him about a July 28 attack on the Khimki City Hall building.

The City Hall building was pelted with stones and smoke grenades by 90 to 300 attackers who protested what they called unlawful destruction of the Khimki forest, slated for a partial demolition to make way for an $8 billion highway despite protests from environmentalists.

Litoi said the police wanted him to disclose information about members of an anti-fascist movement that took responsibility for the City Hall attack, Ekho Moskvy radio reported. He said he was not present during the attack.

Last week, police officers visited the offices of several newspapers, including Kommersant, asking staff for information about the attack.

The requests amount to an attempt to disclose journalists' sources, which can only be revealed on court orders — something that investigators did not obtain, said Andrei Rikhter, a media professor at Moscow State University's school of journalism.

Police investigators have also visited the headquarters of the Svobodnya Pressa online daily, asking for photos of the City Hall attackers.

Several reporters from Komsomolskaya Pravda and Moskovsky Komsomolets have been summoned for questioning, and police officers have also visited the home of the Gazeta.ru reporter Grigory Tumanov.

“These are attempts to discredit reporters,” Rikhter said, adding that the law does not offer the media sufficient protection from police abuse.

“The media law doesn't ban [police] from conducting searches in offices of media outlets and summoning reporters for questioning,” he said.

Moscow and Moscow region police spokespeople provided no comment on the media freedom allegations Monday. A Khimki police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity told The Moscow Times that police were only acting on request of civil authorities in the case. He did not elaborate.

The relatively independent print media has become a source of irritation for the authorities after television, the No. 1 source of news for most of the population, was placed under firm state control in the early 2000s, said Boris Timoshenko, a researcher at the Glasnost Defense Foundation.

He said the Khimki attack has served as a source of embarrassment for the police because the police had failed to react fast enough to make any arrests.

“They are looking for scapegoats,” he said.

Two suspects have been charged in connection with the attack and face up to seven years in prison. The two deny involvement and claim that they were targeted for being prominent figures in the anti-fascist movement.

Some media experts said the police have grown more bold in going after journalists after State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov, who chairs the ruling United Russia party, attacked two newspapers for critical articles following the March 29 suicide bombings in the Moscow metro that killed 40 people.

Gryzlov claimed that articles in Vedomosti and Moskovsky Komsomolets about Chechen warlord Doku Umarov, who claimed responsibility for the bombings, showed that the newspapers “might have been connected with terrorist activity.”

Both newspapers filed defamation suits against Gryzlov, but lost.

Solidarity action with the defenders of the Khimki forest in Tel Aviv

Today, the 13th of August there was a picket of solidarity with detained on trumped-up case Russian anti-fascists - Alexey Gaskarov and Maxim Solopov. About 30 demonstrators protested against terror of the Russian government and its cooperation with the Nazis, they also demanded the immediate release of political prisoners and to take action against those responsible for beating defenders of Khimki forests, including the cops.

During the meeting, Putin was personally summoned to a straight up fight by one of the participators , who promised to "beat the Russian imperialism." Some time later, Revolutionary Confederation of Anarcho-Syndicalists (RKAS) hanged a statement about the events in Khimki, as well as an invitation to free market to be held in the heart of Tel Aviv next Friday.

RKAS - Israel and the Committee for Workers' International organised the picket. Performance was organised by 4ert

Rock-star critic takes new swipe at Putin

Yuri Shevchuk: the Russian rock singer performed at the Moscow protest rally

Hundreds of Russian police surrounded a central Moscow square yesterday as a prominent critic of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin led a protest concert against a road-building scheme that is becoming a focal point for demonstrations against the Kremlin. More than 1,000 people gathered at Pushkin Square to protest against a new road that will go through Khimki Forest just outside the capital, part of a new highway between Moscow and St Petersburg.

Organisers of yesterday's meeting had planned a protest concert by Yuri Shevchuk, one of Russia's best-known rock musicians, who confronted Mr Putin about democratic freedoms this year during a televised meeting.

But police surrounded the square and refused to allow any equipment in, forcing the singer to sing without a microphone through a barely functioning loudspeaker, from a makeshift stage. "Khimki Forest has become a symbol," said Mr Shevchuk before the concert. "It doesn't matter where you live. Everywhere there are environmental problems, and soulless bureaucrats who do all they can to make sure we have no fields, no forests and no rivers. They destroy it all and turn it into money to line their own pockets."

Activists say that there are several alternative routes for the highway that would avoid the forest. The long-running protest has led to several activists being detained, facing court cases and fines.

"All we want to do is breathe clean air," shouted Evgeniya Chirikova, one of the group's most prominent activists, at yesterday's meeting. "Can you hear us, Mr President? What else do we have to do to make ourselves heard?"

Ms Chirikova has been detained by police on several occasions, and after emerging from a courtroom three weeks ago was bundled into an unmarked car by police and driven away. She was later released.

Yesterday, Shevchuk sang songs including one called "When the oil runs out", which talks about a bright future for Russia when the country stops relying on exports of natural resources. In May, he confronted Mr Putin during a televised meeting between the prime minister and cultural figures in St Petersburg.

Shevchuk complained that Russia was ruled by "dukes and princes with sirens on their cars", and asked Mr Putin if he really wanted a society with real democracy where "people stop being afraid of policemen on the street".

In one of the most frank discussions that Mr Putin has faced in his decade in power, Mr Shevchuk also asked why police break up opposition rallies brutally. A visibly irritated Mr Putin said that "without a normal democratic development this country will have no future", and said protests should be allowed, within reason. But this did not stop police from dispersing, with their usual vigour, a large protest rally in Moscow a few days later .

Yesterday's meeting was allowed, but police blocked entrance to people trying to watch the impromptu concert. The Moscow Mayor's office said that it had allowed only a meeting, and not a concert, hence the banning of loudspeakers and other equipment.

Artemy Troitsky, a well-known music critic who spoke at the rally, said: "Khimki Forest has become a metaphor for everything that is wrong with Russia, like Chekhov's Cherry Orchard once was. Many of the people here are not particularly political, but by their actions, the authorities have turned this from an environmental protest into a political one."

In a separate protest, police detained two prominent opposition leaders, including the former deputy prime minister, Boris Nemtsov. Mr Nemtsov and Mikhail Schneider were detained for leading about 100 protesters through Moscow carrying a large Russian flag.

Latest news - Medvedev ordered to halt construction. Below NY TImes article

Halting the construction is for sure good news for the forest, but it may mean that our prisoners are forgotten now (before this, pretty much all of the Khimki movement was solidly supporting arrested anti-fascists, although not necessary all of them accepted the attack against administrative building of Khimki 28th of July).

Kremlin Relents, for Now, to Foes of Highway By MICHAEL SCHWIRTZ Published: August 26, 2010 MOSCOW ‹ For years, environmentalists have risked arrests and sometimes beatings by the police and masked plainclothes thugs in their efforts to halt the construction of a highway linking Moscow to St. Petersburg that they say would destroy the Khimki Forest, one of the few remaining in the Moscow region. U2 frontman Bono, left, talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev about opposition to a controversial highway project.

Typically in Russia, such efforts lead to little but holding cells or worse for proponents of a cause. But supporters of the Khimki Forest were handed a surprising victory on Thursday when President Dmitri A. Medvedev reacted to the public outcry. He postponed construction of the highway. ³Given the number of appeals, I have made a decision,² Mr. Medvedev said in a message on his video blog. ³I order the government to halt the implementation of the decision to build this highway and conduct further civic and expert discussions.²

He added, ³These have already been conducted, but taking into account heightened resonance this issue has had in society, I do not see anything wrong with returning to these discussions.²

The triumph came not a moment too soon for environmentalists and their supporters. Workers had already begun to clear sections of the forest this summer and had planned to resume in October.

³This has flabbergasted us. It was completely unexpected,² said Sergei Ageyev, a member of the environmental group leading the opposition to the highway. ³It is simply a stunning victory for civil society.²

The decision does not definitively halt construction, but was nevertheless surprising given the strong-arm tactics employed against opponents. During protests in the forest this summer, gangs of masked men attacked environmentalists, beating several. The police have detained others.

Mikhail Beketov, an investigative journalist and outspoken opponent of the highway, was savagely attacked by unidentified men in November 2008 and is now severely brain damaged.

At issue is the fate of a 2,500-acre oak forest, north of Moscow in the town of Khimki. Vladimir V. Putin, the current prime minister and Mr. Medvedev¹s mentor, signed an order for the construction of a new highway traversing the forest when he was still president.

Top officials in the federal government and the powerful governor of the Moscow region have backed the idea as the simplest and most cost effective way to strengthen transportation links between Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia¹s two largest cities.

Few dispute the need. Currently, the trip by car is a treacherous 430-mile drive on a potholed road populated with aggressive truck drivers and bribe-seeking traffic police officers. The journey can take 10 hours or more.

Environmentalists have called for building the new highway close to the existing road, which runs through an industrial zone. Building the highway through the forest, they say, would disrupt the ecological balance of Moscow, which depends on a shrinking belt of green space around it to help filter air pollution.

³This forest is our air,² Yevgenia Chirikova, the leader of a protest movement, said in an interview at a recent demonstration. ³If this highway goes through the Khimki Forest, a hole will be punched in the protective ring.²

This summer¹s 100-degree temperatures, along with the huge wildfires that blanketed Moscow and the surrounding region with noxious smoke, seem to have persuaded officials to look anew at the arguments of environmentalists, especially since their calls to save the forest seem to have resonated with many residents of this city and beyond.

More than 2,000 people gathered in central Moscow for a protest against the construction plans last weekend, an exceptionally large turnout here. And last month, hundreds of people raided the Khimki mayor¹s office, throwing rocks and smoke bombs in retaliation for earlier attacks on environmentalists defending the forest.

Environmentalists might also have gained a little help from Bono, the U2 frontman. He was in Moscow for a concert on Wednesday, and, after a meeting with Mr. Medvedev, the Interfax news agency reported, offered the Khimki Forest protectors his support.

Moscow anti-fascist

Moscow anti-fascist hospitalised with a brain injury following a torture by police

26th of August, three plain-clothed officers detained anti-fasict Nikita Nikolaevich Chernobaev in Moscow suburb of Ramenskoye, born 1991.  According to lawyer and human rights activist Mikhail Trepashkin.,Nikita was taken to local premises of Ministry of Interior, where an employee of the security service FSB, began to demand from him a confession for his participation to an action at the administrative building of the city of Khimki July 28, 2010.

During his first interrogation he succeeded to make a phone call to his mother, saying that he was not allowed legal counsel and that he will sign anything police demands. The mother asked: "Are they beating you up?". Nikita answered: "Yes." Chernobaev was only released at 1 AM 27th of August , after having signed a "confession" and an agreement on further cooperation.

After leaving the police station,  mother called an ambulance. Nikita told that they demanded him to sign a confession about having been in Khimki and witnessed some people having participated to the action,  and when he refused, they beat him to the head and other parts of the body, dressed head bag and blocked the air for breathing.

After such torture, he signed everything without reading it. After release, he had visible traces from the  handcuffs on his hands, traces from suffocation around his neck and a black eye.

Paramedics brought Chernobaev to a hospital where doctors reported traces of torture ito the local police station. They recorded a statement. After that, the same three officers who beat Chernobaev attempted to pick up Nikita from the hospital. For security reasons, he was transferred to a hospital in Moscow However, this step does not guarantee him a calm treatment.

According to Trepashkin, these three police officers first declared to Chernobaev that they are from the criminal investigation, and during interrogation they claimed to be from the FSB,. They flatly refused to give their names.

Please call to number +7-496-46-342-10, and ask names of the people who tortured him. It is with this phone they called mother of Nikita and tried to find out to which hospital Chernobaev was moved.

Global action day

Global action day 2.0

November 12–15, 2010: New International Days of Action We Demand that the Russian Authorities Close the Khimki Case and Drop All Charges against Alexei Gaskarov and Maxim Solopov

In late October 2010, Russian social activists Alexei Gaskarov and Maxim Solopov were released from police custody on their own recognizance by the Khimki Municipal Court. They had been arrested a day after a protest in defense of the Khimki Forest on July 28, 2010. Now they are free pending trial, but the criminal case against them has not been closed. They have been formally charged with disorderly conduct, and if convicted, they could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison. The dates of their trials have not been set, but meanwhile prosecutors are demanding that Alexei and Maxim be returned to police custody. Aside from Alexei and Maxim, there are two other people who have been charged in the case, and prosecutors might bring charges against even more people in the very new future. Since Alexei and Maxim were arrested in late July, police investigators have been stubbornly fabricating arrest protocols, evidence, and eyewitness testimony and using force to extract statements from the hundreds of people they have hunted down and detained. What will happen to all these thick case files filled with fabrications? They will form the basis of the prosecution’s case in court. And so the fact that Alexei and Maxim have now been released from jail is not the end of the battle but a signal that we must continue to act decisively on their behalf. We will not allow the authorities to cover up the illegal destruction of the forest and the persecution of its defenders with the soiled robes of counterfeit justice. We will force the authorities to close the Khimki Case and drop charges against all activists!

Why do the Russian authorities insist on turning activists into criminals and demanding prison sentences for them? For the same reason that they have either not launched or halted investigations into the near-fatal beating of journalist Mikhail Beketov, the murder of newspaper worker Sergei Protazanov, and the numerous attacks on Khimki residents. The policemen who beat up environmentalists defending the forest and arrested people participating in legal pickets have not been punished. The police investigators who tortured witnesses in the Khimki Case have not been punished. Can we expect fair trials for Alexei and Maxim when we have witnessed lawlessness and injustice so many times? Khimki judges have on numerous occasions shown all of us that we cannot count on their respect for the law and common sense. We demand that the case be closed!

The protest action that took place in Khimki on July 28, 2010, was a response to the lawlessness and violence perpetrated against local residents, journalists, and activists. It was a highly emotional response to the fact that all previous protests had not just been ignored by the authorities but had been cruelly suppressed. As a result of this protest, the Russian authorities began heeding the voice of the forest’s defenders. The campaign to defend the forest caught this gust of hot July wind and continued to act using other means. The authorities must end their persecution of the people who took part in this protest and the forest defenders. All charges against Alexei Gaskarov, Maxim Solopov, and other activists must be dropped.

What You Can Do

1. During the international days of action on November 12–15, 2010, hold eye-catching protest actions in your cities at official political and cultural events organized by the Russian authorities as well as outside Russian Federation embassies and consulates. Demand to meet with official Russian representatives and give them your petitions. Any Russian company, product or event can be a successful occasion for your protests.

2. Send faxes to the Khimki Municipal Court (+7-495-572-8314), the Moscow Region Prosecutor’s Office (+7-495-621-5006) and the President of the Russian Federation (+7-495-606-2464), demanding that the case be closed and all charges against Alexei Gaskarov, Maxim Solopov, and other activists dropped.

3. Continue to send letters to such international organizations as the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, and the UN, asking them to investigate the abuses by Russian authorities and intervene in the case. You can find contact information for these organizations here.

4. Work to get articles published in your local and national media that will inform the broader public about the case of the Khimki hostages and the new threats to civil liberties and the rule of law in Russia. Invite neighbors, friends, and colleagues to your solidarity actions in support of Alexei and Maxim, and ask them to join you in demanding that this fabricated criminal case be closed.

Send information about your solidarity actions as well as copies of letters, faxes, and media publications to our e-mail address: [email protected]

BTW I find it interesting,

BTW I find it interesting, how in international scale, libertarian communist spectrum has been rather passive around this issue, although Gaskarov positions himself explicitly as a libertarian communist (he is a member of Autonomous Action).

Looking at the list of solidarity actions organised around previous action days (http://khimkibattle.org/?p=1036&lang=en), we see that actions abroad are mostly organised by groups like climate activists, social forum spectrum NGO's, trotskists (!) and antifa without clear political orientation.

Could be that libertarian communism around the globe is pretty much a bubble, no matter how fancy libcom.org, and besides IWA and small networked platformist groups, no any libertarian communist movement really exists. BTW IWA was an exception in terms of solidarity, they did wrote a letter to Khimki town prosecutor which made a difference: KRAS published the absurd reply IWA secretariat received and this was small news with overall impact to the campaign.

In general of course sectarian position KRAS picked (support to Gaskarov but not to Solopov) means that they have nobody to work with on this in Russia, and no surprise if that letter writing will be both the first and last efforts from IWA, no matter how pompous declarations KRAS made in September about "getting an international campaign organised"

I get a picture is that libertarian communists in libcom are whining about action in Khimki 28th of July no being pacifist enough, whereas apparently this is not a problem for trotskists, NGOists and other reformists. Although of course opinions of individual syndicalist pacifists in libcom are maybe not reflect main reasons behind the general social anarchist passivity around this issue.

I`m fully desagree wiyh this.

I`m fully desagree wiyh this. The position of KRAS is not sectarian but logical. I don`t think that we as anarchist must make campaigns for authoritarians because we aren`t masochists and we understand very well what they will make against us after his victory. It is very known from history. If any anarchists want to repeat old mistakes - so please without us.

As anarchists, we are against all repressions and prisons. But we make campaigns for people only which is not ennemy od\f anarchism. And we don`t support patriots.

The position of KRAS is shared by comrades from IWA. French CNT-AIT comrades signed also the declaration of KRAS about Khimki: http://www.ainfos.ca/fr/ainfos09058.html

The comrades from Polish ZSP also support this position as I know.

The Secretariat of IWA and the Spanish CNT sent message in support for Gascarov and not for both. The message from Spain and the idiotic answer from Russian juge to this (Gascarov will be in prison until his guiltylessness will be proved) helped much in making public reaction in the case and in the further liberation. It is confirmed from the people of general campaign made for both prisoners.

So thank you very much to all anarchists / anarcho-syndicalists which made protest campaign for comrade Gascarov after our appeal.

personally speaking, i think

personally speaking, i think it was not publically clear what the KRAS position was. i may be wrong (feel free to correct me) but the fact that KRAS supports only one of the two came to my ears only on personal basis. on the other hand, i wouldn't be so strong against support of both, cos i think under other circumastances it could prove ineffective to separate the case (in terms of getting the guys out of jail). and it would be interesting to know Gaskarov's view on this.

oh, and the argument that "what will they do when they come to power", well, i see no connection with this and the case. or is the stalinist guy now about to come to power and wipe out all the anarchists? i am definitely for the historical comparisons and lessons to be taken, but come on, try to keep them in the contexts cos out of context they sound as some dogma one rather laughs at than takes seriously...

To MT: Maxim is not a

To MT: Maxim is not a Stalinist, but he does consider himself as patriot. Alexey is one of his best friends.

To Foristaruso:

Nice that you have found Polish and French allies in your struggle against politically incorrect fonts (for those libcom readers who missed the story back in August, you may recap here: http://libcom.org/forums/news/anarchists-antifascists-attack-local-adminstration-building-29072010), it is about a time to purge social movements from incorrect fonts, having Maxim in prison would definitely be a necessary first step. I wonder where are other sections of the international - have they been infiltrated by supporters of incorrect fonts?

Here Are Jeep’s Awesome 2024 Easter Safari Builds From Every Angle

Are these the best colored Jeeps around right now?

It’s that time of year again people, it’s Easter. And sure, that might mean it’s the season for eating too much chocolate or celebrating the anniversary of someone’s resurrection (weirdly on a different day each year) but for us here in the world of cars, it means it’s time to look at a bunch of awesome Jeep concepts.

That’s because the off-road brand is preparing to host its annual Easter Jeep Safari . Jeep will head to the desert and bring with it all manner of modified metal. This year, its special builds do not disappoint.

For the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep put together four special trucks built around its Wrangler , Gladiator and Grand Wagoneer models. Each car is fitted with the kind of off-road upgrades you and I can only dream of, as well as all kinds of massive wheels, rugged trim and some seriously awesome color choices.

To celebrate their unveiling, we’ve put together a bunch of the best pictures of the new Jeeps that we could find. So pull up a camp chair, don your desert boots and sit back to enjoy the best the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari has to offer.

The Low Down

First up it’s the Low Down concept, which is built on Jeep’s mighty Wrangler Rubicon 392. The car was designed in homage to the Jeep Wrangler Lower 40 from 2009’s Easter Jeep Safari. As such, it packs an awesome paint scheme, massive wheels and no roof, just like its inspiration.

The One With The V8

Because this is a Wrangler 392 , there’s a stock 6.4-liter V8 motor under hood. The engine kicks out 475-horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic. To show off its beating heart, Jeep’s engineers fitted the hood with a see-through section that reveals that massive engine in all its glory.

Get It In The Good Color

For the finish on the Low Down, Jeep opted for a lush poison apple red paint that pops nicely compared to the black grille and roof rails. To streamline the look of the truck, Jeep opted to remove the rear door handles, because who needs those anyway, and fitted a bespoke fuel filler door on the rear quarter.

Looks Wheelie Big

Because it’s a Jeep Safari build, the truck is finished off with a set of massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires , which are fitted to a 20-inch bead-lock wheel at each corner. Under the car, Jeep has left the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension as stock, but it also fitted Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears.

Willys Dispatcher

Next is the Willys Dispatcher build, which is based on Jeep’s Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The build is said to invoke “...the nostalgia of the early post-war civilian Jeep,” according to the brand. As such, it unites an awesome paint scheme and the rugged looks of the Wrangler with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that churns out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Best Wheels Of The Bunch

The biggest changes on this build are in the looks department, with Jeep finishing the truck in that lovely element 115 green paint. At each corner, there’s a 16-inch steely wheel painted cream. They really pop against the Traxion 36-inch tires and teal body. To finish the retro-stylings, there’s a classic-looking Warn winch up front.

Look At That Interior

Inside the Dispatcher is a lovely trim that reminds me of my grandparents living room, in a really, really good way. But what does that look like to anyone that’s not been in their house in rural Yorkshire? Well, it’s full of tan saddle leather and a neat houndstooth pattern across the seats and dash. I dig it.

Other flourishes on the Dispatcher include a vinyl covering to protect the floor from any water that could come in through the open roof, and there’s an onboard air compressor to manage your tire pressures on the trail. To keep you moving when the going gets tough, the truck also has Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles with 4.70 gears.

The High Top

If you absolutely must have a pickup truck, I guess the new High Top build isn’t a bad way to go. Built around Jeep’s Gladiator Rubicon , the High Top concept packs in massive 40-inch off-road tires from BFGoodrich at each corner, wrapped around a set of black Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels.

How It All Works

Under the hood, the truck is powered by Jeep’s 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine, which has been paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. To get all that oomph onto the trail, Jeep gave the Gladiator High Top Dana 60 front and rear axles with 5.38:1 gearing and adjustable air suspension.

Pickup, Pickup

Because this is a pickup , there’s a whole bed out back to fill with your hopes and dreams. To maximize its useability, Jeep gave the High Top truck the latest Decked truck bed storage system, which offers additional lockable cargo space just like you get from a trunk. Imagine that.

Winching At My Heartstrings

Up front, the bumper of the Gladiator has been modified to include a custom protective hoop from American Expedition Vehicles. This sits above a Warn winch, and the High Top packs in rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering to protect its underside.

Grand Vacationeer

You know what’s cooler than a ginger-colored pickup truck? A minty green Grand Wagoneer that can take you almost anywhere. This is the Jeep Vacationeer and it’s excellent. Fitted out with 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires, 18-inch rims and a 1.5-inch lift, this is everything the Wagonner was born to be.

Not Enough Room To Camp In The Trunk

Inside, Jeep has ripped out the second and third rows of seats in the Wagoneer in order to install a pass-through entrance to the custom tent that’s fitted up top. The custom carbon fiber tent comes from outdoor experts Skyloft and offers climate-controlled sleeping space for two and all the windows you need to enjoy your surroundings. Is this the ultimate definition of “glamping?”

Never Forget Your Car Cacti

As well as skid plates to protect the underside and custom flared wheel arches, Jeep has also fitted the Vacationeer with a pretty stunning interior. There’s tons of earth tones and soft finishes, and the rear space has been lined with weather-proof materials to ensure the back of the Wagoneer can handle all the outdoor activities you throw at it.

Which Would You Have?

So, that’s the lineup of awesome custom Jeeps that Stellantis will take to its annual Easter Jeep Safari this year. If you could drive away today in one of them, which would you choose? My heart tells me the Low Down is the best of the bunch, but deep down I really want the overlanding Wagoneer.
