Port Elizabeth boasts some of the tidiest and safest city beaches in South Africa. More than 40 kilometers of sun-splashed sand rims the coast along Algoa Bay. The best picks for a swim are Wells Estate Beach with a paddling pool and water slides; well-shaded Humewood Beach; and popular Kings Beach, with kiosks, restaurants, a skate park, and other entertainment facilities close by. Less than 30 minutes' drive from Port Elizabeth, Kragga Kamma Game Park welcomes day trippers for self-guided or guided safaris. The park is more affordable than other game-viewing options, with an impressive array of wildlife for its size, including white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and monkeys. A favorite are the cheetahs in their own enclosure with a catwalk above for better viewing opportunities. All the other animals roam freely.

This is a great option for those who don't have time for a longer safari at a national park; visitors can easily tour the park in two to three hours. Tracks through the park are fine for two-wheel-drive cars, but the park also offers guided tours in open Land Rovers.

About a 10-minute drive from Kragga Kamma Game Park, Holmeleigh Farmyard is another critter-filled family attraction. Pricier and more luxurious safari experiences with a range of plush accommodations are available at Kwantu Private Game Reserve, about 85 kilometers from Port Elizabeth, and Shamwari Game Reserve, 75 kilometers south of town.

Art at the Donkin Reserve along Route 67

Route 67 in the city's historical hub is an art and heritage trail spotlighting 67 artworks created by Eastern Cape artists–one for every year Mandela devoted to public life. The trail weaves together the city's British heritage and African history and tells the story of the lead-up to the 1994 elections.

To follow the trail downhill, begin at the Donkin Reserve at the lighthouse. From here, visitors can stroll at their leisure to admire colorful mosaics, murals, sculptures, and engraved poetry. Along the way are several historical sites and art galleries. Notice the 67 steps leading up to the second largest flag in Africa. Also, look for the metal cut out of Nelson Mandela, fist pumping, as he leads a line of South African voters to the first democratic elections in 1994.

The trail ends at the Campanile , a 52-meter-high tower with a carillon of 23 bells erected in 1923 in honor of the first settlers.

In the city's historic hub, the Donkin Reserve is a small park established in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, Port Elizabeth's founder. A highlight of the park is the poignant pyramid-shaped memorial to Sir Donkin's wife, Elizabeth, inscribed with the words: "To the memory of one of the most perfect of human beings who has given her name to the town below."

The nearby lighthouse, dating from 1861, houses the tourism office. Here, visitors can pick up a map for the five-kilometer-long Donkin Heritage Trail , which spans 47 historical sites from City Hall to St. George's Park including the Campanile , built in memory of the settlers who arrived here in 1820 and offering a panoramic view over the city.

From the Campanile, a street under the freeway leads to Market Square , the city's historic center. Before walking the trail, leave valuables behind and check with locals, as some areas can be dangerous. The Donkin Reserve is also the start of Route 67 , the city's popular art and heritage trail.

In the Cape Recife Nature Reserve , the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds welcomes visitors to see its rescued marine life and learn about these fascinating creatures. The center focuses on marine birds, in particular African penguins that hail from nearby St. Croix island, home to the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world.

Many of the staff are knowledgeable volunteers who share their passion for their work on informative tours through the bird hospital and educate visitors about the center's rehabilitation efforts and the dangers facing these creatures in the wild. One of the best times to visit is during feeding time, around 2:30pm, when visitors can pull up a seat in the coffee shop and watch these charismatic creatures gobbling their meals and cavorting around the pool.

Covering 366 hectares, Cape Recife Nature Reserve, a few kilometers from Port Elizabeth, offers great hiking and beachcombing along a slice of unspoiled coast. Visitors can escape the crowds found at the city beaches here, and a nine-kilometer hiking trail curves through the park with beautiful views of the rocky coastline, dunes, an 1851 lighthouse, and pristine beaches with tidal pools.

Wildlife lovers can also stop by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds within the reserve. Better still, try timing a visit to coincide with the release of rescued penguins off the beach.

About 40 kilometers west of Port Elizabeth, Van Stadens Nature Reserve is the perfect place for a hike and a picnic. The well-maintained paths are easy to follow, and the walks vary in difficulty, from gentle paths through old-growth native trees to more challenging hikes through thick forests and along rushing streams. Those who walk to the Van Stadens bridge will be rewarded with beautiful views over the steep ravine and fantastic opportunities for photography.

On Port Elizabeth's beachfront, South End Museum traces the history of the forced removal of the former residents of this area during the apartheid era. Photos, newspaper clippings, and recreations of living spaces bring to life the personal stories of the time and focus not only on the personal tragedies, but the triumphs as well. Although the displays are simple, the museum documents an important piece of the city's history. Entry is free, however visitors are encouraged to leave a donation.

Gemsbok at the Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is one of the top private game reserves in South Africa and is well-known for its conservation efforts. Located just 75-kilometers from Port Elizabeth, it is well worth booking a few nights accommodation here. The Shamwari Private Game Reserve Lodges are beautiful, the food excellent, and the wildlife viewing can be phenomenal.

Shamwari also runs a number of animal conservation programs, including the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries . These facilities are educational and also serve as home to rescued big cats from around the world. Day visitors to the cat sanctuary are allowed on a limited basis, but you must contact the reserve first to enquire. Don't just show up.

Storms River Bridge, also known as Paul Sauer Bridge, is on the eastern end of the famous Garden Route , and the area around it is an eco-destination. The bridge itself, known as a deck arch bridge, is a work of art for engineering geeks, and building it was a big deal in 1953. In fact, at a height of 36 meters above Storms River, this suspension bridge was the highest concrete arch bridge in South Africa until 1984 when nearby Bloukrans River Bridge was built.

You can walk across the bridge, which serves as a gateway to Tsitsikamma National Park . Pause to take in the stunning views of the rocky gorge below. Also in the Storms River area is bungee jumping off the even higher Bloukrans River Bridge, located 20 kilometers to the west along the N2, as well as canopy tours.

Port Elizabeth is home to a branch of the South African Air Force Museum (the main museum is in Pretoria). Located on the southern side of the airport, it has nine aircraft on display. These include a supersonic jet fighter, two Harvard trainers, a helicopter, and the oldest surviving fighter jet in South Africa. The museum is a fun distraction for kids or anyone arriving at the airport a little early.

Besides the aircraft, the museum includes aircraft memorabilia, model planes, and photos in the main exhibition hall. In a WWII hanger, more planes are being restored. There is also a working flight simulator that can be booked with advance notification.

Located about 25 kilometers outside Port Elizabeth, the Island Nature Reserve is another beautiful natural attraction. It is most famous for its Bushback hiking trail. Traversing 16 kilometers, it starts just outside the Nature Reserve's main office. The reserve consists of varied ecosystems, including a 480-hectare indigenous Alexandria coastal forest and sandy dunes.

Besides the Bushback Trail, there are a number of shorter walking trails that are suitable for kids. Along the trails, you'll often spot some smaller animals, including vervet monkeys, small antelope, and even caracals. The park is also home to about 120 bird species.

Luxury Hotels:

For a historic, boutique sleep try Hacklewood Hill Country House . In a house dating back to 1898 in the suburb of Walmer , Hacklewood has an old-fashioned, Victorian English style, with stained-glass doors and polished wood floors. Breakfast is included and there is an outdoor swimming pool.
No5 by Mantis is another luxury choice in the S ummerstrand suburb and is very close to the beach. This five-star boutique property has just 10 posh suites done up in contemporary South African style, and the hotel has an impressive art collection on display throughout. Amenities include a restaurant and spa.
The Boardwalk Hotel is also in the Summerstrand suburb. This beachfront resort has 140 rooms and suites all with Indian Ocean views. The trendy property also has plenty of on-site shopping and dining and is part of the larger Boardwalk entertainment complex mentioned earlier.

Mid-Range Hotels :

Sir Roys At The Sea is an excellent value choice near the beach in the Walmer suburb and also near the airport. The guesthouse features awesome views of the sea and Nelson Mandela Bay, and bright and spacious rooms and suites. There is also a swimming pool, and breakfast is included in the rate.
Another mid-range choice, Paxton Hotel is a four-star hotel overlooking the bay. It features bright and contemporary rooms. On-site amenities include a restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers.
Garden Court Kings Beach is also popular, especially with families. This good-value hotel is right on Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and the hotel can help set up excursions to the sightseeing attractions listed above.

Budget Hotels:

South Africa is such good value that many mid-range hotels would rank as budget in another country. Still, if you want to spend less, try the SUN1 Port Elizabeth . In a central location, it offers tiny but clean and trendily decorated rooms–think striped bedspreads and streamlined wood furnishings.
Another similar option is the Road Lodge Port Elizabeth , which is also basic but comfortable. The rooms are more generic in decor than Sun1, however.

Gqeberha (formerly and commonly Port Elizabeth ) ( Xhosa : iBhayi , Afrikaans : Die Baai ) ( or just PE if you want to sound South African ) is South Africa 's fifth largest city. It is on the Indian Ocean coast half-way between Cape Town and Durban , in the Eastern Cape , about 260 km from Knysna . It lives up to its reputation as the friendly city and the windy city .

A perfect complement to the Garden Route , the Friendly City is a major sea port and tourist destination set along the beautiful shores of Nelson Mandela Bay. The centre of the South African motor industry is spoiled by moderate and warm temperatures all year round with scattered rain throughout the year - climatic attributes which contribute to an outstanding quality of life. A popular and significant destination for water sports, Port Elizabeth also offers many historical attractions, such as the Historic Donkin Heritage trail, taking visitors along the footsteps of the 1820 settlers. British heritage is reflected in the Port Elizabeth Cricket Club, and the oldest bowling green in South Africa. Port Elizabeth’s greatest treasures, however, are malaria-free wildlife areas in its vicinity, and clean beaches washed by warm water.

Port Elizabeth was founded by British settlers in 1820 and was named after the wife of Rufane Donkin, Acting Governor of the Cape Colony at that time. The city sits on shore of the Algoa Bay and with the neighbouring towns of Kariega/Uitenhage and Despatch , it forms the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. The Algoa Bay is reputed as the Bottlenose dolphin world capital, as pods of thousands of dolphins can be spotted at any given time in this bay. This is also a year-round whale watching destination.

The tourist information centres are in the Donkin Reserve in the town centre, at the Boardwalk (Marine Drive) and at the Airport Arrivals hall. These information centres are managed by the local tourism organisation, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism , which also offers tourism passes that you can purchase online or at their tourism information centres. These tour passes give you access to free and discounted activities around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Port Elizabeth was renamed Gqeberha on 21 February 2021, a change that is opposed by many of its residents. Gqeberha is pronounced with a tongue click, i.e., "Click bear gha."

Shosholoza Meyl [dead link] operates an overnight train from Johannesburg and Bloemfontein three times a week. You can also get to Cape Town , Kimberley , Pietermaritzburg and Durban (by changing trains in Bloemfontein), to East London (by changing trains in Noupoort, Colesburg or Bloemfontein), to Mthatha (by changing trains in Noupoort and Amabele) or to Grahamstown (by changing trains in Alicedale).

MetroRail [dead link] operates frequent commuter trains to Uitenhage and the surrounding suburbs during weekdays, with a reduced service over weekends.

The Apple Express [dead link] is a narrow-gauge (2 feet/610 mm) tourist train that operates from a separate station in Humewood Road near King's Beach. It departs regularly for Thornhill Village via the Van Staden's River bridge, the highest narrow-gauge rail bridge in the world.

Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth is easily accessible by motorways from Cape Town (790 km) via the Garden Route , Bloemfontein and East London (310 km). Of course, you can also drive from Johannesburg .

All major South African coach companies offer regular schedules to Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth. The city is also on the Baz Bus route [dead link] .

Minibus taxis from Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth go from Norwich Minibus rank cnr or Strand Street and Flemming Street. There are minibus taxis going to Knysna and Cape Town.

Public bus [ edit ]

There is a public bus transport system within the city. You wait no longer than 15 minutes to get a bus. Use the Algoa Journey Planner [dead link] to find your bus.

Maybe the buses do not cover the nooks and crannies of the city, but there are many city tours available. In Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth, using the public transport has not been a problem; it is used commonly by tourists, students and locals. Remain alert, and be aware of your environment.

By taxi [ edit ]

The main form of transportation for most people is the (minibus) taxi . Toyota Hiaces or VW Caravelles or the like, modified to cram in as many seats as possible, will take you across town for approximately R10 (as of May 2020). Some of them are still more a road hazard than anything, but a clean-up in the taxi industry means that their standards are improving.

Each taxi operates on a laid-out route. They are more frequent during daytime than at night.

Getting on. Stand on the curve of a trafficked road. When a taxi approaches, it may flash its headlights to 'ask' if you want to go. Just stick your hand out.

Getting off. You might be able to tell the 'bouncer' ( kondi) your desired destination when you pay, but in any case just tell the driver "next stop" , in a clear, firm voice, if you can make yourself heard above the music pounding from the sound system.

Greenacres Shopping Centre . An excellent place to spend a Saturday at around noon. There are many, many shops and plenty of restaurants. There is a lively vibe over the weekend, and the mall can be reached easily. It is also commonly referred to as "The Bridge", because it is joined to the mall of that name.

Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth offers coffees on par with the best the world has to offer. It is a city with a handful of baristas that are competitive in their inclination to produce the perfect brew.

The food is wholesome and moreish. The Vovo almond croissant (when you can get one) is a firm favourite and the breakfasts, especially the creamy scrambled eggs with smoked salmon or bacon on Ciabatta are cornerstone meals. Samora and Xolani will fix you a coffee that caters exactly to your taste. Enjoy the old part of PE and listen in on the locals doing their business and revelling in an atmosphere that is part African, part Europe.

15 Best things to do in Port Elizabeth

Here I use the knowledge I’ve gained over multiple trips to South Africa to highlight the very best things to do in Port Elizabeth. With the experienced eye of a travel writer specializing on the world’s oldest continent, you can be sure my picks are first-hand recommendations of attractions that wowed me.

Although now officially known as Gqeberha, most still know this Indian Ocean city as Port Elizabeth, or PE. It’s location on the broad Algoa Bay makes it an alternative choice to Durban for beach escapes. But there’s also plenty of culture and history to be had for those taking the time to get to know this noble lady of Eastern Cape Province, as we will see.

1. Donkin Reserve

Smack bang in the middle of Port Elizabeth’s Central Business District (CBD), the Donkin Reserve is a publicly-accessible open space combining native flora, historic structures, and fine views over the wider city.

Its lighthouse, dating to 1861, can usually be visited to enhance the views from Donkin’s Reserve further. Next to it is a 10 meter high stone pyramid dedicated to Elizabeth Markham. The wife of then governor Rufane Shaw Donkin, it’s from her the city got its name.

Bringing the Donkin Reserve into the modern era are brightly colored mosaics in part depicting the Portuguese ships which first rounded this part of the South African coast, and metal cutouts of Nelson Mandela, fist raised in celebration.

2. King’s Beach

Proudly flying a Blue Flag for cleanliness, King’s Beach is one of Port Elizabeth’s most popular stretches of sand. Its runs for 1.6 glorious kilometers from the harbor to Humewood, a beachside neighborhood with its own long history.

A good all-round beach, its sand is fine enough to ensure sand castles hold first, while warm Indian ocean waters lure visitors in to swim, bodyboard, and surf. Watched over the lifeguards, there’s also a nursery pool for toddlers, mini-golf, changing facilities, and refreshments. In fact, King’s Beach has all you need to spend a day soaking up Port Elizabeth’s sunny weather. Average daily temperatures don’t drop below 19°C at any time of year.

3. Route 67 walking trail

The city’s Route 67 trail consists of a piece of public art for each of the 67 years Nelson Mandela gave his life to ending racial segregation in South Africa under apartheid.

Starting at the Campanile, the city’s easy to spot clock and bell tower, it passes through Vuyisile Mini Market Square. Continuing onto St Mary’s Terrace and Donkin Reserve, it also takes it what’s reported to be the largest flag on the continent. Each of the artworks come with an information board to provide the wider context.

4. Splash Waterworld

The slides and rides behind King’s Beach belong to Splash Waterworld. Primarily aimed at children, this small waterpark nonetheless does its job of bringing smiles to the faces of those who visit. So prepare for a wet and wild time on attractions including the Super Tube, Lazy River, and Speed Slide, alongside a Kiddies Slide for younger patrons.

As you might expect, there are plenty of kiosks offering up drinks and snacks. More unusually, it’s also possible to take to the slides of Splash Waterworld after dark thanks to floodlights.

5. Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick was constructed in 1799 to avoid a French invasion of this part of Britain’s Cape Colony. Although this may sound like a baffling idea today, at the height of the Napoleonic Wars between the two countries, nothing seems to have been off the table.

Never having fired a shot from any of its guns, the two-story complex is square in form and sits on one bank of the Baakens River, overlooking the modern harbor. Said to be haunted by the ghosts of a Shakespeare play, behind its walls you’ll find a blockhouse, powder magazine, and small museum.

6. Addo Elephant National Park

Roughly 100 kilometers (1.5 hours) north of Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant National Park makes for an easy day trip from the city. One of South Africa’s largest national parks, there’s no secret to what the big-ticket attractions are here.

There are around 600 elephants within the park, alongside several hundred buffalo, a pride of reintroduced lions, hyenas, Burchell’s zebra, kudu, eland, and bushbuck. Game drives are therefore the favorite past time, with 120 kilometers of track to choose between. Its lions and hyenas are most commonly spotted in the early morning or late evening.

My suggestion is to visit on a hotter day, which brings much of the action down to the waterhole.

7. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum

Located within the grounds of Saint George’s Park, this gallery specializes in the art of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Containing three main rooms, its artworks are regularly rehung to allow as much of its comprehensive collection to be seen as possible.

These works are enhanced by temporary exhibitions spanning from sculpture to quilting. In addition to artworks by colonial artists such as Thomas Baines and Frederick Timpson I’Ons, there’s a fascinating collection of beadworks by the Southern Nguni people, and a smattering of contemporary pieces too.

8. Bayworld

Opened in time for the new millennium, Bayworld is part natural history museum, part oceanarium, and part vivarium. Its museum exhibits are thoroughly modern, with plenty of interest for all ages.

Meanwhile, its outside areas include a dinosaur exhibit and oceanarium with live animal exhibits incorporating rescued turtles, seals, and penguins. Last but certainly not least, Bayworld has South Africa’s oldest snake park. Here visitors can get the lowdown on a myriad of local snakes, as well as crocs and tortoises.

9. Cape Recife Lighthouse

Cape Recife is the name given to Port Elizabeth’s southeasternmost point. The obvious location for an aid to navigation, its lighthouse was established in 1849 to guide ships around Thunderbolt reef, named after a British frigate which wasn’t so lucky.

Rising 24 meters and banded with black and white stripes, Cape Recife Lighthouse sits within a nature reserve offering hiking opportunities for all levels of fitness. Paths cut through the semi-tropical vegetation and over rocky outcrops to rockpools home to an impressive number of marine creatures.

10. Horse Memorial

Back in the center of Port Elizabeth lies its Horse Memorial. In approximate life size, it depicts a British solider kneeling in front of a horse and offering it a bucket of water. Designed by English sculpture Joseph Whitehead, it was unveiled in 1905 to honor the estimated 300,000 horses brought to South Africa during the Anglo Boer wars of 1899-1902. Most were brought to shore at Port Elizabeth.

Paid for by the public, it cost £800, equivalent to around £120,000 ($150,000) in today’s money, and was shipped all the way from London where the bronze was cast.

11. Amakhala Game Reserve

A private game reserve approximately 1.5 hours from Port Elizabeth by road, Amakhala has an area of 18,000 acres. Joining morning or evening game drives to explore them, visitors to Amakhala have a good chance of encountering all the Big Five species – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and Cape buffalo.

Amakhala ranges from bushveld to savanna, with areas covering five of South Africa’s seven biomes. This means other species to look out for on day trips from Port Elizabeth include giraffe, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, antelope, and monkeys.

12. South End Museum

This museum is one of just a few attractions in Port Elizabeth which directly tackle the apartheid period. The South End neighborhood had been a multiracial one known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, good schools, and host of successful local businesses.

But that all ended when its non-white tenants were forcibly relocated, an event which took place between 1965 and 1975. Its this history which South End Museum seeks to share. It does this through its blend of displays, historic photographs, and a walk-on map of the area.

13. The Campanile

This stand-alone clock and bell tower has a passing resemblance to its more famous cousin in Saint Mark’s Square, Venice, Italy. Built for the most part from red brick, it rises to a height of 50 meters.

Constructed to mark one hundred years since the first settlers arrived into what became Port Elizabeth, workmen remained on the site between 1920 and 1922. Their efforts included completing the 204 steps which reach up to the observation room at the Campanile’s top. That said, there’s now an elevator too, providing easier access to the 23 bells which make up one of the largest carillons (bells played like a piano) in South Africa.

14. Whale watching

Port Elizabeth’s coastal waters aren’t only of interest to beach goers. They’re also a draw to whales to such an extent that Algoa Bay has been declared the World Cetacean Alliance’s fifth Whale Heritage Site.

Joining a licensed whale watching tour from Port Elizabeth gives the opportunity to watch the antics of southern right and humpback whales. Both are known for breaching the water. Other whale species which can be encountered are minke and Bryde’s whales. Known as the ‘bottlenose dolphin capital of the world,’ taking to the waters of Algoa Bay promises plenty of action from these intelligent creatures as an added bonus.

15. South African Air Force Museum

One of Port Elizabeth’s smaller museum spaces, the South African Air Force Museum is located within the perimeter of the city’s airport. Its collection currently contains nine aircraft, including South Africa’s oldest jet, a supersonic fighter, and two helicopters.

Access to a restored World War Two era hangar allows visitors to see restoration work as it happens, while the walls of the main museum are packed with cabinets and imagery linked to the force, founded in 1920. However, the highlight has to be the onsite flight simulator.

We took the ferry from Port Elizabeth to the small island Bequia in the Grenadines. The schedule very convenient and the transportation economical. The hotel arranged all of our taxi rides from a very friendly and informative driver named, Ekron.

Very cute and authentic.

Tons of vendors, tasty food, and friendly locals. It was a great experience.

Great escape from St Vincent hustle & bustle- 1 hour ferry ride. Lots of small, shaded beaches with relatively few people during our visit. Some areas rent chairs, while others have restaurants. Most take US currency & give change in EC.

Port Elizabeth (also known as 'Die Baai' in Afrikaans) is an industrial city situated on the coast of the Eastern Cape in South Africa . A colourful blend of leafy middle-class suburbs and corrugated iron shanty towns, it's often the final stopping point for travellers taking the scenic Garden Route from Cape Town . The main attraction of the city is it's sandy beaches, and the South African surfing mecca Jeffreys Bay is just a short drive down the coast.

For those looking for a safari adventure, Port Elizabeth serves as a good base-point to travel to a number of nearby game reserves. The largerst is the Addo Elephant National Park , a Big-5 game reserve with one of the densest concentrations of African elephants on earth. A number of private reserves also exist in the area offering a more luxury bush experience, namely Shamwari, Amakhala, Lalibela and Kwandwe.

Sights and Activities

The well-developed beachfront is the city's main attraction, but there are other worthwhile options for those spending a little time in the area.

The Donkin Heritage Trail is a 5-kilometre-long tour of the cultural history of Port Elizabeth. The route includes a 19th century lighthouse, the Campanile bell tower, the Port Elizabeth City Hall, and many other examples of Victorian architecture.

A small number of township tours operate in the city, offering an eye-opening insight into some of the lasting effects of the apartheid era.

World cup 2010.

The big upcoming event on the South African horizon is of course the FIFA World Cup beginning on the 11th of June 2010. One of the most prestigious and popular world sporting events, the World Cup 2010 promises to bring throngs of passionate supporters from around the globe. Held once every four years, it's a football tournament (known as soccer in South Africa) where 32 world nations vie for the famous golden trophy.

Port Elizabeth will be hosting some of the World Cup matches at the Nelso Mandela Bay Stadium , which has a capacity of 48,000.

Ironman South Africa

The Ironman South Africa annual event takes place in Port Elizabeth. It attracts 1000+ triathlon competitors to the city for a superb and challenging event. This year, the Ironman event takes place on Sunday, 5 April. For more information, visit the Ironman website .

Average temperatures are between 20 degrees in June and July to around 27 degrees in January. Nights average between 7 and 17 degrees respectively. Rainfall is quite evenly distributed throughout the year regarding the amount, but between May and September there are less rainy days, but with heavier shower.

It's also relatively expensive, usually 20-30 rand an hour, sometimes even more. Many of the accommodation options have internet access available, either wireless with your own laptop or by their own computer(s).
