These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

what cruise lines do singles cruises

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

what cruise lines do singles cruises

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

The Best Cruise Lines with Solo Cabins (and the Best Cruises for Singles)

It used to cost a small fortune if you wanted a cruise cabin to yourself, as you were basically paying the price for two people.

But then solo cruising became one of the hottest trends in travel.

Indeed, Google searches for “solo cruises” by U.S. users have recently  more than doubled .

“I've seen an increase year after year in the solo travel community, especially among single females,” says Shelby Frenette, a solo travel expert and manager of the TravelFun.Biz  agency, which caters to singles. “Their desire to travel is so strong that most major cruise lines are starting to design their ships with solo occupancy cabins to accommodate this growing population.”

Most importantly, they’re pricing these cabins for individual travelers. And they’re also waiving or reducing the dreaded “single supplement” fee, which charges vacationers for two full cruise fares even when they stay alone in a double-occupancy room. That supplementary cost can be a budget-busting 100% more.

But it’s not just affordability that defines a good cruise. To help lone travelers feel welcome on board, cruise lines are also rolling out additional opportunities for them to meet other singles at exclusive receptions, get-togethers, and group dining just for solo cruisers.

Unfortunately, demand still outstrips supply on most of these lines, so if you want one of these special rooms, you have to book early, and you should always make sure you’re getting a special single-cabin rate and not paying a single supplement to stay in a room categorized as a double.

Based on price, cabin options, and a solo-friendly environment, here are 10 lines that are now offering smoother sailing for cruisers traveling alone or who want a private room.  (Pictured above: a specially designed Studio cabin on the Norwegian Epic)

Cruise lines with solo accommodations

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: celebrity cruises

Celebrity Cruises ’ commitment to singles is evident in its mast-high growth in solo bookings, up an annual 225% over the past two years. Perhaps that’s because its ships offer great options for cruisers on their own. Celebrity offers interior, windowless cabins to solo bookers, but the premium line's two newest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (which launched in December 2023), each stock 32 single staterooms with the line’s so-named Infinite Veranda (pictured above). That's a hard-sided, ocean-facing balcony with motorized slide-down window that turns an interior sitting area into an oceanview space. That feature extends the 184 square feet of cabin space by an additional 42. Celebrity Apex features 24 of them, while Celebrity Edge (which debuted them in 2018) is home to 16. Each has a queen-size bed, rare for single rooms. Celebrity Silhouette has four inside digs-for-one at 103 square feet each.

These one-person cabins, which have the same upscale amenities as double-occupancy ones, charge no single supplements. The Infinite Veranda staterooms are especially popular, with 71% of Celebrity's solo travelers booking these rooms with a view. Guests on their own can also take advantage of special promotions that waive the single supplement in standard cabins, but only on select voyages.

Celebrity offers events for travelers on their own, including a gathering hosted by the activities team, which helps break the ice. An un-hosted solos table is also available every night for those who want to dine with new friends, but you can also eat alone if you choose. All that is why Celebrity Cruises won industry awards in the Solo Travel category from  Travel Weekly 's 2022 and 2023 Magellan Awards.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Cunard

Cunard is famous for its elegant liner-style ships that evoke the Golden Age of ocean voyages. But in a departure from that traditional era, three of its four ships now offer solo cabins ranging from 178 to 183 square feet in size: Queen Mary 2 (15), Queen Victoria (nine), and Queen Elizabeth (nine, including one pictured above). All have twin-size beds and especially large windows with coveted ocean views, except for one inside cabin on both the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth . Cunard's Queen Anne is not slated to include solo staterooms when it begins service in 2024.

Singles pay a solo fare for these cabins far less than the single supplement of 175% for staying in a double-occupancy stateroom.

Cunard also hosts coffee meet-ups and cocktail receptions for its solo guests. Select voyages also have “gentleman hosts” onboard to serve as dance partners and shore excursion escorts.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Holland America

From its solo-oriented activities to its cabins for one, Holland America ’s commitment to singles is full steam ahead. Since 2016, it has introduced 12 single staterooms in each of its three Pinnacle Class ships, Nieuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Koningsdam (pictured above). At 127 to 172 square feet each, they have ocean views and the same amenities as double-occupancy cabins but with a double bed.

The single cabins are priced for one. Single supplements for double-occupancy staterooms, meanwhile, are as much as 100% extra and are rarely reduced or waived.

But Holland America, which attracts older cruisers, stands out for its Single Partner Program, whereby singles can join a wide variety of activities for solo passengers, from mixers and cocktail parties to game nights, cooking classes, wine tastings, and line dancing. Plus, some shore excursions are geared just to singles, from solo parasailing and ATV adventures to private day touring. Finally, those traveling alone can also arrange to dine together.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: MSC Cruises

As European-owned MSC Cruises rapidly expands its fleet of 22 ships, it’s making leeway on accommodating travelers who are on their own. Six of its ships have a total of 136 cabins for one, 38 of which have windows and 20 with prized balconies. All have twin-size beds. The World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature solo staterooms. MSC’s shipboard ambiance is international with a cosmopolitan vibe.

Solo cabins carry no single supplement on MSC. But a single traveler choosing between solo cabins and comparable interior or balcony ones designed for two would save an average of 40% for a balcony and 25% for an interior. Lone cruisers have to pay a single supplement of 100% if they book a double-occupancy cabin, which MSC sometimes discounts.

Solos looking to meet other single travelers can attend a special hosted cocktail party.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Norwegian Cruise Line

The pioneer in solo cruising, Norwegian turned the tide when it introduced 128 studio cabins designed and priced exclusively for one on the Norwegian Epic back in 2010. Yes, they were small, at just 100 square feet, but they enabled solo travelers to consistently avoid the single supplement. Located on the inside, they had a full-size bed and a window feature, but not one that faced the water.

Today, this line known for its specialty dining is still trailblazing. It’s the first one to offer a wide variety of cabin categories dedicated to singles. As of Jan. 2, 2024, the line introduced solo inside, solo oceanview, and solo balcony categories, bringing to 1,500 the number of solo cabins across its 19-ship fleet—although some of those are regular double-occupancy rooms that are assigned single-occupancy status on a per-voyage basis . More than 150 Studio cabins feature true oceanview window rooms and more than 300 have balconies, a rarity for solo accommodations.

In addition, guests staying in the solo category staterooms can meet other single travelers, relax, and get cocktails during limited hours at the dedicated Studio Lounge (pictured above) for the exclusive use of guests who booked these cabins. Lounges are available on Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Epic , Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Getaway , Pride of America , Norwegian Prima , and Norwegian Viva . It’s not surprising, then, that Norwegian was named Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers six years in a row by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine and was named Best for Solo Travelers by CruiseCritic.com's U.S. editors in 2023.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Oceania Cruises

Small, intimate, and easy to navigate, Oceania Cruises ’ six ships are especially conducive to solo travelers and the line is stepping up to meet the increased demand from this group. Its four 600-passenger ships— Regatta , Insignia , Nautica , and Sirena— each have 14 solo oceanview staterooms, while the newest ship, Vista (launched in May 2023), has six 270-square-foot solo cabins with prized oversized balcony verandas. Although these Concierge Level Veranda units only have twin beds (pictured above), they entitle cruisers to keycard-only access to a Concierge Lounge with extra amenities. Oceania’s upcoming 1,200-passenger ship Allura , scheduled to launch in 2025, will have solo accommodations similar to Vista ’s.

Solo cabins cost less than comparable double-occupancy rooms (though not quite half as much). But travelers can also book regular cabins with a reduced single supplement of up to 50% for specific categories, along with 2-for-1 Cruise Fare deals. Oceania also creates special opportunities on board for solo cruisers, including welcome cocktail receptions and group dining tables—the line is known for its high-quality cuisine.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Royal Caribbean

Famous for its megaships—including the world’s largest ones for passenger cruises—and for first-at-sea attractions, Royal Caribbean knows how to stand out. If you want to sail on a behemoth vessel with a tidal wave of amenities and attractions, this line is for you, especially if you’re traveling alone.

Five of its blockbuster Quantum Class ships— Anthem of the Seas , Odyssey of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , and Spectrum of the Seas —harbor 28 studio cabins for one. They represent a mix of inside cabins with virtual balconies (false windows that are digital screens projecting real-time views from outside; pictured above) and balcony rooms with 55-square-foot open-air terraces, generous for solo accommodations. Studios range in size from 101 to 119 square feet and have full-size beds but might lack features such as couches. Two additional vessels, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas , offer 15 solo staterooms starting at 96 square feet located in both inside and outside locations. However, the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas,  new in January 2024 and the largest cruise ship ever, has no solo cabins.

Royal Caribbean's studio solo cabins don't charge a single supplement, while regular cabins come with single supplements up to 100% over standard double-occupancy fares.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Virgin Voyages

Young, hip, and for adults only, Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages is taking its appeal to sole cruisers seriously. Each of its superyacht-style ships— Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady , and Resilient Lady— includes 46 cabins for one with full-size beds, including 40 Solo Insider rooms and six Solo Sea View ones that provide rare forward-facing views of the water. That's a significant number dedicated to travelers alone out of 1,330 cabins on each ship. At 105 to 130 square feet each, they may be smaller than some competitors, but they display the sleek, stylish design that’s a hallmark of the line.

Solo cabins are priced for one, while singles in a double-occupancy room pay about 20%–30% less than two people, a substantial savings compared to other lines. That extra amount is sometimes waived on special promotions.

Virgin’s young, adult-focused atmosphere hits the mark with sole cruisers looking to have fun with other singles. From an organized “grog walk” (Virginese for pub crawl) through the many shipboard bars to solo meet-ups to a dedicated solo travelers’ table in each signature restaurant, the line ensures lone travelers aren’t lonely. In fact, finding new friends seems like half the point.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

Here are some of the best cruises for solo travelers at any age.

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases ).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star-worthy accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee ( river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

New cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-Instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness. All cruisers must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon boarding for guests ages 12 and up.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option (note the cruise line is on hiatus until 2023). This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 71-day Grand Africa Voyage from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, stopping in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Jordan, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, and more on its cruise around the African continent. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Cunard's Centenary World Voyages is even longer, at 117 nights aboard the Queen Mary 2 . The cruise includes two transatlantic crossings and stops across Asia, South Africa, and Australia, departing and arriving in New York City. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends. All guests ages 12 and up must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 14 days prior to travel.

Best Cruise Lines For A Singles Cruise

Large cruise ship docked at a cruise port at sunset

If you are a solo traveler wanting to go on a cruise then it can be difficult to find a cruise liner that is going to be affordable. Most of the big, established companies will expect you to pay a single supplement fee where you effectively have to cover the cost of two travelers.

The reason for this is due to the fact that the vast majority of rooms are designed with two people in mind and therefore the company will feel as though they will be losing money by selling such a room to a solo traveler.

Thankfully there are options out there or the single cruiser and there more companies who are either reducing the single supplement, creating single staterooms or allowing tour operators to book a large number of rooms for singles cruises.

What do you want out of your singles cruise?

Are you happy to match staterooms with other solo travelers, the best cruise lines for singles cruises, using travel agents or a tour operator to book your singles cruise, how much will i pay for a singles cruise, decide which cruise line best for you.

Before looking at various websites for different companies you need to ask yourself what you are planning to get out of your cruise vacation. For the solo traveler, there are many different types of vacations you can have onboard a ship but it depends on what you want.

If you are looking to meet fellow singles then you would ideally look for a solo cruise or at least a cruise liner that will have singles events . This will give you the opportunity to meet new people and have a great laugh in the process.

It could be though, that you simply want to relax and have some ‘me time’ to yourself for a week or more. If this is you then you would simply look for a company that has solo cabins or reduced single supplements and not care about any singles events.

The reason this is important is that it will change the type of cruises that are available to you. Cruises for singles are rarer and sell out quickly and so do single cabins on more regular cruise lines. It’s up to you to choose which type of break you’d prefer.

Another key question to ask yourself is if you are willing to share a room with someone, or not. On singles only cruises and other types of cruise ship you will have the option to be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender and therefore traveling supplement free.

While this might sound like a great adventure for some and a good way to meet a new friends, some others would prefer the privacy of their own cabin. The downside here though, is that a lot of ships have very few or no single person cabins and therefore it is not an option.

The alternative to this is to find someone that you are going to be more comfortable with and this can be done in one of two ways. Firstly you could travel with an existing single friend who loves cruising or alternatively there are online forums where you are able to search for potential roommates.

There are many great cruise companies out there but not all of them are good at catering to solo travelers. Here we will look at some of the best to give you a great choice in finding a company who is going to make your time onboard as easy and welcoming as possible.

1. Norwegian Cruise Line

The Norwegian Cruise Line is a company that will come up a lot in searches for the best singles cruise liners as they were the first to make cabins specifically for solo cruisers, and plenty of them at that. The Norwegian Epic was made with 128 studio rooms and they have four other ships that also have a large number of singles rooms.

As well as that, they will often have events for solo travelers and a lounge near the single staterooms where the solo travelers would be able to get acquainted on their journey. They are a great choice for anyone looking to get away and avoid the single supplement.

2. Holland America Line

Unfortunately, most companies won’t offer the vast number of single beds that we see with Norwegian Cruise Line and the majority of others will only have a handful, if any. Holland America Line is an example of this as their Koningsdam ship has 12 cabins.

What Holland America does offer though, is their single partners program so that you will be able to be matched with fellow single travelers. On top of that will be welcome events, cocktail parties and other activities for single cruisers to enjoy.

3. Royal Caribbean Cruises

One aspect of going on a cruise on your own that scares a lot of people is having to dine with couples and feeling like the odd one out. Royal Caribbean are one of a few companies who will offer a singles table during dining so that you don’t have to be on your own.

Three of their main ships have 28 singles cabins and it is a company that is known for plenty of fun activities onboard such as rock-climbing walls, surfing and observation pods. They cater for singles and you’ll never be short of things to do.

4. Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises is a company that has a good reputation when it comes to being friendly for solo travelers. Not only will it allow you to dine with other singles but they will often host solo nights in specific restaurants for you to have an even more enjoyable time.

There are going to be plenty of other activities out there for singles too when they are onboard the ship. Shore excursions for solo travelers are also available and plenty of different features will be offered to make sure that you are never left alone if you don’t want to be and always have options available to meet other singles.

5. Cunard Line

Cunard are known as one of the most elegant cruise vacation companies that sail the seas and they will be able to offer a limited amount of solo cabins on their ships which are all beautiful and very well fitted, leaving you with a luxurious experience .

As well as the luxury onboard, there will be plenty to do for single travelers. Having trivia nights, single dining and gentlemen hosts will allow you to have a relaxing time on the ship where you will be able to fully enjoy yourself and have a great time with fellow solo travelers.

6. Princess Cruises

On a Princess cruise there will be plenty of options for the solo traveler. Singles only nights are held where you are going to be able to have a great chance of meeting someone and enjoy a party with your fellow single cruisers.

They will also offer a lot of onboard activities that are catered for single travelers too. This is offered up the plenty of sports activities, relaxation and fun at the likes of casinos too. The only downside is a lack of single cabins but they make solo cruisers feel very welcome.

Two cruise ships from Princess cruises docked next to each other at a port

As a solo traveler you have two options if you want to go on a cruise and mingle with other single travelers and that is to either book directly with a ship that caters specifically for solo travelers or you can book through a company that will organize singles cruises.

The benefit of booking with a travel agency is that they will be able to offer you a vacation with specific events that will be organized with singles in mind. This will allow you a space to be able to enjoy yourself knowing that you are going to be in the company of fellow single travelers.

With these types of tours and cruises though you will often have double occupancy with two single beds instead of a double bed. This might suit the more adventurous travelers but for a lot of people they’d prefer to just be in a room on their own.

While some ships will be able to offer some events with singles in mind, these companies will be all about the single trip and therefore will have a lot more available to you. You will have to pay an extra charge for these services with your upfront costs but a lot of people will see it as value for money, especially if you are looking to find a partner and new friends.

As a solo traveler it’s going to be hard to find anywhere that is going to be half the cost of what a couple has to pay, as you will either have to pay for one of the limited numbers of studio cabins, pay a single supplement charge or go through a company that will offer singles cruises.

For those that don’t know, the single supplement is standard in the travel industry and is the expectation that a solo traveler will pay the same price for a double room as a couple would. This means that many rooms will be double the price which can restrict solo travelers to only a certain amount of cruises, unless they want to pay excessive fees.

Some companies like Norwegian Cruise Line will offer reduced rates on their single supplements when it comes to their regular rooms but you will find that if you wanted your own double cabin, the vast majority of cruise liners are going to expect you to pay a very hefty fee in order to board the ship.

The single cabins that are available on these ships are reasonably priced with the downside being that you are often limited for choice on the type of rooms that are available when compared to couples. The studios are going to be smaller rooms and are usually situated on the inside of the ship and therefore you don’t have the option of paying a little extra for a balcony.

It could be said that these ships carry a hidden single supplement charge to them. As a ballpark example, if you take an inside double stateroom and an inside studio room, if you paid around $1,000 for the double room you’d be expected to pay around $800 for a studio room. Even though this would be cheaper than getting a double room, the couple would be paying $500 each for a room that is only marginally bigger with the same amenities.

For these reasons, getting a single cabin is still going to be expensive but not as expensive as many other options. As we have discussed earlier, the cheapest way of enjoying a cruise as a single is going to be to match up with other travelers to share the price of a double room. While the options are out where, you just need to be wise about what you are spending and how to save some money during your cruise .

A single cruiser in a pool on Santorini overlooking the ocean with a cruise ship on it

As we can see, despite the market being made with couples in mind, there are still going to be a lot of options when it comes to solo travelers. Thankfully you can choose from some great cruise lines who not only won’t make you break the bank to travel on their ships but will put events in place for you to meet fellow singles.

There are websites out there which are going to help you have a singles cruise experience and these can be very fun to travel on. This these types of companies, you usually have to split the cost with a fellow passenger and pay a little bit extra for booking with a 3rd party companies and to attend all the events and activities that they will offer.

Splitting the cost with a fellow traveler is a great way to ensure that your journey is as cheap as possible but this is not going to be for everyone. If you are going to be doing this on a regular cruise then you also aren’t going to see a lot of singles events to help meet fellow singles.

The best option for you is going to depend on your personality and how you want to spend your time away. Just because you are single doesn’t mean that you have to stay at home or go on a regular vacation. With these great cruise liners, you are going to be able to enjoy the wonderful cruise experience without breaking the bank.

The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Solo cruising has never been this good. Not only are more cruise lines adding solo cabins, but the single-traveler cabins aboard ships are also getting more spacious and luxurious.

And just because a cruise line doesn’t offer a solo cabin doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to pay more to cruise alone, either. Some cruise lines waive or reduce single supplements that can double a solo traveler’s bill. These deals become especially frequent during the first quarter of the year,  a discount period known as “ wave season .”

River cruise lines are being especially savvy in courting solo travelers by “offering more attractive opportunities for those who like to travel in style by themselves,” says Joshua Harrell, chief marketing officer for the WorldVia Travel Group and the Travel Quest Network.

Whichever cruise line you choose, you’ll want to book early: The travel insurance search engine Squaremouth says its sales show a 64 percent increase in solo cruise travel this year from 2019.

Here's everything you need to know about single bookings aboard some of the best lines for solo cruisers.

All cruises featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian debuted a studio cabin in 2010 and was the first major cruise line to create accommodations for one. These cabins come in at just under 100 square feet—enough space for a full bed. They don’t offer sea views, but the cruise line does include access to a lounge where they can meet other solo travelers over snacks.

Norwegian's solo cabins are now on several ships, including the Norwegian Epi c, Norwegian Breakaway , Pride of America , and Norwegian Prima , which is set to debut this summer.

Holland America

Holland America's solo cabins are larger than Norwegian's, but you'll have to settle for a twin bed. Still, solo cruisers on Holland America’s Koningsdam , Niewuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Ryndam ships can expect between 127 and 172 square feet of space onboard.

Best of all, each of Holland America’s solo suites comes with an ocean view.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas. Pool Deck

The pool deck on board Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas ship

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas .

In addition to a private balcony that's perfect for sipping morning coffee, each of the single suites on these ships are nearly 200 square feet.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania is taking solo cruising to a whole new level with its newest solo suites. Its latest ship, Vista , debuting in 2023, includes six 270-square-foot solo cabins, each with a balcony and amenities including free laundry, room service, premium lounge access, and a bottle of Champagne. Each cabin features a memory foam bed, a separate seating area, and a private balcony.

The line is planning to add solo cabins to several additional ships this year, giving travelers even more options to sail solo.

Celebrity Cruises

If you're a solo cruiser who's in it for the view and not the private balcony, check out Celebrity Cruises' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. These cabins feature giant windows that create a space similar to a sunroom.

Infinite Veranda cabins are available on Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , and the new Celebrity Beyond . Each ship has a range of single cabins: Celebrity Edge has 16 of them, while Celebrity Beyond has double that, with 32 solo rooms.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages doesn’t just give solo travelers their own suite—it also gives them butler service.

Atlas' first solo suites hit the seas this year onboard its debut ship, World Navigator . Each suite clocks in at just over 180 square feet and comes equipped with a queen-size bed, a 42-inch TV, and a shower complete with L'Occitane bath products. There's even a separate closet just for your shoes.

Cunard Line

If you're looking to make a transatlantic voyage, Cunard offers solo cabins on the Queen Mary 2 , the iconic ship known for its transatlantic crossings between London and New York. Although they only offer a twin-size bed, solo suites onboard the Queen Mary 2 are around 180 square feet and include ocean views. Two other Cunard ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria , also offer single cabins, but some are interior rooms without ocean views.

This luxury cruise line doesn’t offer solo suites, but it also doesn’t charge solo cruisers double the price to book a cabin of their own.

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways' AmaCello features solo cabins

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways has four ships with solo cabins: AmaDolce , AmaDante , AmaLyra , and AmaCello , which all sail European itineraries. On other ships, single supplements are 25 percent of the cruise fare for itineraries in Europe and Asia.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on its European river cruises and on some itineraries in southeast Asia. About 10 percent of Avalon passengers are solo cruisers, but you’ll want to book early to join them. Only a portion of each ship’s staterooms are reserved for solo cruisers on each itinerary.

Best Cruise Lines for Singles or Solo Cruises

  • Adventurers

While many people regard cruises as something you do with a partner, your family or friends, there are some pretty great singles cruises available nowadays, too. In fact, solo traveling in general has become increasingly popular in recent years, from solo city breaks to all-out backpacking adventures in foreign countries. Several cruise lines didn’t miss the solo-travel train and now also cater to individual travelers.

Although there is a difference between singles and solo travelers—singles don’t necessary travel alone, but can also be part of a group of single friends, while solo travelers are per definition by themselves—the basic on-board offerings for these passengers are the same.

Whatever the reason is for your solo cruise adventure—can’t wait for someone to join you, craving a getaway after a divorce, or simply love exploring new places by yourself?—you can pick and choose from quite a lot of solo cruise lines nowadays.

What Is a Singles Cruise?

Simply put, singles cruises are ideal for independent travelers, whether they’re single or solo. They offer a variety of facilities, amenities, activities, programs, rates and/or even staterooms specifically for individuals.

Some cruise ships are so big and busy that it’s virtually impossible to meet someone by accident or chance, and find them again later on. Finding a solo table or dining companions can be quite difficult as well on typical group cruises or couples cruises. And then we haven’t even mentioned the price! Traditionally, solo cruisers pay significantly more for a cabin than couples or groups. Often, a single person pays 125% to 200% the price a couple pays (per person) for the same “double” cabin. When looking for solo cruises, these “single supplements” can be discouraging and off-putting.

This, however, is not the case on many modern-day singles cruises or solo cruises. Pioneered by Norwegian Cruise Line, the cruise industry has been slowly moving in the direction of offering more singles cruises and services. This includes studio staterooms, as well as common areas, designed specifically for solo travelers. Other attractive features for singles are the reduction or even waiver of the unpopular single supplements, and meet-and-greet events and activities.

Other major cruise lines have followed, and continue to follow, Norwegian’s example, including Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Cunard and Virgin Voyages.

How Much Do Singles Cruises Cost?

We’ve mentioned the fact that most traditional cruises (used to) require the payment of a single supplement. While we understand why cruise lines would do this—they need to compensate the price that two travelers would pay for a double room by charging singles more—let’s just call it what it is: rather annoying. This pricy punishment to solo travelers can sometimes literally double the cost of singles cruises.

It is near-impossible to talk about how much singles cruises cost, simply because there are so many factors at play. How long is your cruise? Are you cruising with a luxury cruise line or a budget one? How much partying, eating and/or drinking will you do on your solo cruise? Is your cruise in the low, shoulder or high season? This all affects the price of solo cruises, just like it does all other cruises.

What we can say, however, is that the following cruise lines for singles and solo travelers offer the most affordable options. All of them cater toward singles, offering such amazing features as solo staterooms, cheaper solo rates than other cruise lines, as well as activities and events focused on singles.

Some itineraries, too, are more ideal for singles. Try to pick a cruise that includes lots of fun destinations, options for on-board and on-shore activities, workshops and meet-ups. It might be a smart idea to avoid cruises to romantic destinations like, for example, the South Pacific or the Mediterranean, which will probably have a very high percentage of couples on board .

7 Best Cruise Lines for Singles or Solo Travelers

Norwegian cruise line.

The cruise line that pioneered the concept of singles or solo cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line was the first to create so-called “studio staterooms” on cruise ships. As early as 2010, they offered no fewer than 128 of these single staterooms on the Norwegian Epic, which still has the most solo rooms of any Norwegian ship. Many other ships, however, now also boast these coveted solo cabins, including Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Bliss and several others.

In addition to single-specific cabins, Norwegian Cruise Line also has the Studio Lounge, an exclusive social area that’s accessible only to single cruisers. Here, solo sailors can meet and get to know each other—there are large-screen TVs, a lounge, a bartender and hosted pre-dinner meetups. On top of that, some on-board staff also organize bar crawls around the ship, which is a superb way to meet other singles easily and casually.

Virgin Voyages

Just like most other things that Richard Branson’s Virgin Group does, Virgin Voyages is essentially an industry disrupter, in the best sense of the word. This new and ultra-modern cruise line aims to push the industry into the future, raising the bar of what cruises can—and perhaps should—be.

Virgin Voyages is focused strongly on the millennial demographic, which includes an exceptionally high percentage of solo travelers and singles. This shines through in its ship design, which includes several cabins, both sea view and insider cabins, that are ideal for solo sailors. Filled with tech features, such as Wi-Fi, smartphone/tablet-to-TV casting, various cabin setups and mood-setting lighting options, these solo cabins are among the best in the industry right now.

Celebrity Cruises

As part of their fleet-wide modernization efforts, known as Celebrity Revolution, Celebrity Cruises now offers more options for singles and solo sailors than it ever has. Three of its ships have a number of single staterooms. Celebrity Apex has 24 solo staterooms, the highest number in its fleet, while Celebrity Edge has 16 single rooms, all of which have an Infinite Veranda. Additionally, Celebrity Silhouette features 4 inside staterooms that are perfect for singles.

Thanks to its many shore excursions, on-board facilities, entertainment and events, as well as class and workshops, you’ll have no trouble getting to know new people on a solo cruise with Celebrity Cruises.

Although Silversea , currently, has no specifically dedicated solo cabins, it does make our list of best cruise lines for singles thanks to its regular deals aimed at solo cruisers. It’s not uncommon for this luxury cruise line to launch solo specials with single supplements as low as 25%.

Additionally, the smaller size of the Silversea ships allows for a more intimate setting, as well as the increased chance of running into the same people again. Known for its social atmosphere, Silversea has a relatively high percentage of solo travelers, including singles in their 30s, 40s or 50s, who are open to get to know new people and participate in activities together.

Royal Caribbean

Although Royal Caribbean does not offer specific single-occupancy prices for double rooms, they do, in fact, have studio staterooms on select cruise ships. You can book one of these single rooms without having to pay any single supplement. Depending on the ship, they vary from inside studio staterooms and virtual balcony staterooms to even super studio ocean view staterooms with a balcony.

You can book a single room on half a dozen Royal Caribbean ships: Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. Royal Caribbean cruises also offer a wide range of activities that are perfect for solo travelers. Those may include fitness classes and scuba-diving lessons, cooking workshops and wine tastings.

When it comes to the recent trend of singles cruises, Cunard certainly hasn’t missed the boat—pun absolutely intended. This luxury cruise line has made the effort to retrofit its entire fleet to accommodate single and solo passengers. You can choose between single inside or single oceanview staterooms on the Queen Mary, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.

Different from most other major cruise lines in the sense that they offer mainly transatlantic cruises with limited stops, Cunard’s itineraries do allow singles to spend a lot of time on the ship, enjoying activities, workshops and other social gatherings. The social host(s) abroad your ship will ensure no one is left out, enabling singles to meet and connect with other passengers at hosted dinner parties, cocktail hours and coffee gatherings.

Holland America

A huge reason why Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for singles is its amazing Single Partners Program. In this program, every Holland America cruise ship hosts a Solo Travelers Party for singles to meet and mingle at the start of their cruise. Additionally, singles can join a wide variety of activities, from mixers and cocktail parties to game nights, cooking classes, wine tastings, lectures and line dancing (popular among older singles). In total, there are over 40 activities for singles on Holland America cruises.

On some ships, there are a limited number of solo staterooms available, too. Most staterooms, however, are still double-occupancy based and require a single supplement. Don’t let that discourage you, though. Holland America’s fantastic Single Partners Program, combined with a feeling of on-board camaraderie and accommodating staff, make this a great choice for singles.

8 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Woman on a cruise

In this article I’m going share some tips for finding your perfect cruise line as well as tell all my fellow solo cruisers about how much fun they’re missing out on by not taking these vacations alone.

Solo travel is becoming more popular

As solo travel becomes more popular, more cruise lines are catering to solo travelers. Many people want the flexibility of enjoying their own time while on vacation but still having access to group activities and events. There are many different ways that solo travelers can enjoy a cruise ship without feeling like they’re alone all of the time!

Solo travel can be more expensive

Beware the dreaded “single supplement”.

Cruise fare pricing is typically based on two people sharing a stateroom which is called “double occupancy.” Solo cruisers will typically pay 125% – 200% above published prices (for one-person) on most cruise lines. This extra charge is called a “single supplement.”

However, some cruise lines are tailored to single travelers, and offer discounts for the solo traveler. Some of these perks include reduced or waived single supplements. A few have even built staterooms designed and priced for a single occupants.

Many cruise lines are adding new amenities for solo travelers so that everyone has the opportunity to feel included on their vacation!

Advantages of solo travel

One of the biggest advantages of solo travel is that solo travelers will get to explore ports more freely. There are no plans, no schedules and fewer people needing attention. A solo traveler can go at their own pace instead of being held back by others!

In addition to exploring on your own terms you’ll have plenty of opportunities for new friends while you’re solo. Cruise ships are built for socialization since that is their biggest draw! Whether it’s a formal event, or simply meeting someone at dinner, there will always be an opportunity to meet new people and make lasting connections.

Many solo travelers enjoy the freedom of being able to do what they want when they want. No one else has to be ready at the same time as you, and there’s no waiting for other people to go out. If solo travel is right for you then it will allow you ultimate flexibility in planning your vacation itinerary!

Many solo travelers like that they can sleep late if they want, or wake up early without having to disturb someone else sleeping next to them. They also like the extra storage space solo travelers get in their cabins which is not available to those who share a room with someone else!

Finally, solo travel allows you to keep your vacation stress free and worry-free by having no one else’s needs but your own that have to be taken into consideration. No worrying about anyone else’s hangovers, preferences or allergies.

Best cruise lines for solo travelers

Here is our list of the best cruise lines for solo travelers. Please note that single cabins are typically in high demand and typically sell out quickly. Most need to be booked at least one year in advance if not longer.

Celebrity Cruises (Premium cruise line)

On Celebrity, solo travelers can book single “Infinite Verandas” balcony stateroom on Celebrity’s Edge-class ships (Edge, Apex, and Beyond) . These staterooms feature a queen-size bed. They are slightly smaller than the standard Infinite balcony rooms at 131 square feet, but plenty roomy for a single traveler. Celebrity Silhouette has 4 inside single cabins.

Crystal Cruises (Ultra-luxury cruse line)

Solo travelers are a niche group that make up to 25 percent of Crystal’s passengers. Solo-oriented activities onboard and low single supplements (as low as 10% for certain categories and cruises) attract solo visitors.

Holland America Cruises (Premium cruise line)

If you are a little older and a solo traveler, Holland America may be a good fit for you. Holland America is known for catering their services toward this demographic and they offer many programs that don’t require partners like activities which can be enjoyed alone or with others in tow! MSC frequently waives the “single supplement” charge for solo travelers on select itineraries for inside, oceanview and balcony categories. The best time to get these deals is after final payment and if it looks like the cruise will not sail full.

Norwegian (Contemporary/mass market cruise line)

Norwegian was the leader in building solo cabins. It has made a concerted effort to accommodate solo travelers by adding studio cabins on many of their newest ships. Other Norwegian ships now have solo cabins as well – Breakaway – 59; Getaway – 82; Escape – 82; and Pride Of America In Hawaii – 4 cabins.

Norwegian single Studios are inside cabins, but are comfortable with a full-sized bed, flat screen television (some which can act like a virtual window giving you an ocean view) and private bathroom. Cabins are about 100 square feet.

To take solo travel to the next level, Norwegian created the Studio Complex and Lounge, a shared social place where solo travelers can meet, chat and enjoy a coffee or cocktail.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (Contemporary/mass market cruise line)

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line offers solo travelers the opportunity to purchase a solo cabin on many of their most popular ships. Almost half of Royal Caribbean’s fleet now has solo cabins. A Studio Ocean View can be found on the Harmony of the Seas with 96 square feet of space. While the Studio Ocean View Balcony on the Anthem, Quantum and Ovation with 119 square feet of cabin space plus an additional 55 square feet for the balcony.

On Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships, solo cabins are located in Central Park and Boardwalk neighborhoods; one is an inside stateroom while the other is an outside with obstructed views (meaning you’ll be able to see out but people walking along the promenade deck may be able to see in). Solo travelers have access to the Cruise Connections Lounges where they can relax and take advantage of Wi-Fi.

Silversea Cruises (Ultra-luxury cruise line)

Silversea has always prided themselves as being an inviting place where everyone feels welcome–even if you’re going alone! As part of this philosophy there’s even something special waiting in store just for passengers travelling independently, a champagne reception for singles. Promotion single supplements can be as low as zero. Typical supplement range from 10% – 30%.

Virgin Cruises (Premium cruise line)

Virgin is a new cruise line and launched with its first ship the Scarlet Lady. There are two solo cabins categories available on the ship. The Insider is between 105 – 177 square feet. The Seaview ranges from 130 – 190 square feet.

What Is a Singles Cruise? 10 Things to Know

what is a singles cruise

A singles cruise is a great opportunity to travel and meet like-minded friends.

Going on a cruise is one of the best vacations you can take, and there are all different types. What is a singles cruise, and why are they so popular?

Most cruisers are very sociable and love making new friends. Cruises for singles adds the possibility of romance to the equation. Here at CruiseExperts.com, we know all about singles cruises. Call us at 1.888.804.CRUISE (2784) and let us find the best singles cruise for you.

10 Things to Know About Singles Cruises

Singles cruises are organized events that are planned and hosted by a cruise ship line or a travel agency and geared toward groups of unmarried single adults wishing to make new friends or meet a romantic interest.

Here are some things you should know about singles cruises:

1. Each singles cruise is unique and each cruise line will offer different packages for cabins, dining, and beverages according to what the travel agency has requested.

2. There may be a pre-cruise event providing an opportunity to meet other guests prior to the cruise.

3. Although some lines are starting to add lower-cost single rooms, it generally costs more to have your own room, so ask about partnering up with someone of the same sex for a lower fare.

4. Singles cruises have special events and activities which can include welcome mixers, special dinners, social gatherings, cocktail parties, dance lessons, game nights, guided excursions, and more.

5. Your cruise may also include the regular amenities that come with your fare rate in addition to events exclusive to the singles cruise.

6. There is often a separate dining area and an exclusive place for socializing that is away from the rest of the cruise guests.

7. Singles cruise guests can also enjoy the pools, outside activities, and other amenities their cruise ship has to offer.

8. Spa, hot tubs, exercise room, and more are available at an additional charge if not included in your cruise package.

9. Travel agencies set up singles cruises and book a block of rooms on specific sailings. All of the passengers are not part of your singles cruise.

9 Best Cruise Lines For Single Cruisers

Once an industry that was thought to be reserved for newlyweds, budget-conscious families and retirees, cruising is emerging as a preferred form of travel for single cruisers of all ages.

After all, a ship that is three football fields long, with all the entertainment, food and drinks you could want, and sailing to one exotic destination after another would seem to be a great way to meet new people, right?

You might be asking yourself are cruises good for singles? Or you might be anxious to test the waters. But before you jump right into the maritime meat market, it is important to realize that some cruise lines do the “single thing” better than others.

So, unless you’re comfortable on a cruise where you might be sifting your way through armies of Disney characters, or not being able to get a seat on bingo night, check out a few of our favorite cruise lines for single travelers.

Depending on your age and int erests, it’s important you find the right cruise line when you’re single and ready to mingle.

Below are some of the best singles cruise lines (in no particular order).

1. Norwegian Cruise Line

ncl Esc Waterfront 5833

If you are looking for a slightly younger and more nightlife-centric group of singles, you might want to consider Norwegian.

With a lower median age than most cruise lines, there is a level of energy that is more akin to what most would consider a singles party environment.

The sleek Studio staterooms attract single and solo cruisers like moths to a flame. Norwegian isn’t the first to offer single occupancy cabins, but they are the first to feature ultra-modern design and mood lighting, and offer single guests their own exclusive lounge.

READ MORE: 5 Things To Love About NCL

On most sailings, Norwegian taps a member of the entertainment staff to serve as a “solo cruise coordinator.”  Norwegian also has many venues that help keep the party going.

Whether it’s Spice H2O, the Mojito Bar or O’Sheehan’s Pub for some cocktails and conversation, Norwegian knows how to take care of their single and solo cruisers.

2. Royal Caribbean

1458687581 rci liberty perfect storm 213

Royal Caribbean is another line with a number of solo cabins on many of their ships, and since they are also a value-driven cruise line, this makes them a great option for any single cruisers.

The Royal Caribbean experience offers a nearly endless number of activities to help break the ice.

From surf simulators to a skydiving experience there are plenty of options for those adventurous souls, so if you’re lucky to meet your match you’ll have plenty of activities to choose from to stay active, and maybe even get a little competitive.

The world-famous Royal Promenade  is something of a downtown city center and features several venues that allow for some good people watching.

Whether you are looking to find a fellow bar hopper or have a night on the town with someone you met earlier in the sailing, the Royal Promenade is the perfect place to spend an evening before the nightclub gets going.

We recommend checking out The British Pub, Boleros, or The Schooner Bar if you are looking to bump into fellow single cruisers.

3. Carnival Cruise Line

CCL AH18CAR NY J18 0050 BlueIguanaBar 06013 RGB 150dpi V2

Carnival’s well-deserved reputation as the “Fun Ships” makes them an excellent choice for younger singles looking to meet the same.

While you’ll typically find fewer solo singles on Carnival Cruise Line than Norwegian Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean (though there will undoubtedly be some), you’ll encounter lots of groups of single, unattached, friends traveling together, especially during the spring break season and on Carnival’s shorter three-night cruises.

READ MORE: First Time Guide To Carnival Cruise Line

There’s always something fun happening on Carnival, and the party goes later into the night than some other lines, so if you meet someone on board you won’t run out of things to do.

We’re not sure who first said “If this ship’s a rocking, don’t come a-knocking,” but they were probably onboard Carnival when they coined the phrase.

4. Virgin Voyages

SRB VirginSign

This one’s a bit speculative on our part, since as of press time, Virgin Voyages has yet to sail a ship, but from what we’ve seen of this cruise line created by Richard Branson’s legendary Virgin brand, singles will feel right at home.

The vibe aboard Virgin’s Scarlet Lady promises to be sleek and sexy, and the focus on shorter four and five-night cruises is going to attract sophisticated younger cruisers.

Virgin’s ships are limited to those 18 years and older, so there will be no kids running on the pool deck or spoiling the party; alcohol is included and free-flowing helping to lower inhibitions; the entertainment will break the cruise ship mold of Vegas-style productions and Broadway shows offering more music; and the Scarlet Party likely will be the wildest, most uninhibited party sailors have ever seen.

5. MSC Cruises

MSC14000687

MSC Cruises in Europe attract a younger, contemporary crowd, including lots of singles. If you’re looking to meet a handsome Italian stallion or a sexy Spanish Mamacita, there’s a good chance you’ll find them aboard a Mediterranean cruise on MSC.

READ MORE: Everything You Need To Know About MSC Cruises

MSC often boards passengers at several ports during a seven-night cruise in Europe, so there tends to be a bigger mix of passengers aboard at any given time, increasing your odds of meeting someone of interest.

And the vibe onboard is very much European, including discos that keep going late into the night, so you might literally be able to party until dawn.

6. Holland America Line

gallery bar couple eurodam mariner society c040.jpg.image .750.563.low e1583341776279

For slightly older singles, check into Holland America Line. On these ships, you’ll get an elevated level of food and overall service, and meet mature, eligible solo travelers who seek out the finer things in life.

While it might be a little more on the pricier side, the quality is off the charts and the value is still there.

READ MORE: First Time Holland America Cruise Guide

For instance, Holland America offers a limited number of solo cabins on their newer ships, and they are larger than Norwegian’s staterooms, which are between 130-170 square feet; they also all come with ocean view windows.

Single cruises on Holland America Line tend to be divorcees or widowers. While they are a lively and vibrant group, the action does not go much past midnight.

Regardless of how long the party lasts, Holland America Line does a great job of making sure the single’s cruise experience is top-notch.

7. Cunard Line

12661774 10153989406883223 8643433656188386946 n

While a Cunard Cruise is also a wonderful option for many single cruisers, we have to establish that it is a significantly different experience than the previous lines we’ve profiled.

Cunard ships, specifically the Queen Mary II, tend to embark on longer itineraries, including many ocean crossings and thus attract an older, more sophisticated clientele.

There will be way more sea days than port days, so guests spend more time on the ship, creating an environment where like-minded singles are more likely to find each other.

READ MORE: 5 Things To Know Cruising Solo on Cunard

Cunard also employs dance hosts, elderly gentlemen at the ready to accompany the many older single women, usually widows, who sail on board, on the ballroom dance floors found on each ship. There’s likely no better cruise choice for an older, single woman than Cunard.

Another important thing to keep in mind about Cunard is that dress codes throughout the ship are strictly enforced. The minute you step onto the ship it is clear that the atmosphere on Cunard is significantly more formal than that of most mass-market cruise lines.

While it may be way fancier, there is still plenty of opportunities to find other singles.

8. Viking Cruises

77721 viking river cruises introduces four next generation vessels for 2012

Viking River Cruises might seem like an atypical choice for a single traveler, but hear us out. River cruises tend to attract adventurous and independent mature travelers, so it stands to reason that there would be some adventurous and independent singles in the mix.

Now, Viking river ships are small, topping out at just under 200 passengers, so there’s not going to be a huge meat market on board, but chances are your cruise will have a handful of like-minded single travelers looking to meet new people on board.

And the nature of a river cruise, which lends itself to independent exploration in cities and towns along the banks of the river, means there will likely be more opportunities to venture ashore to dine, drink and explore, than a typical ocean-going cruise.

As with most cruises, shorter sailings (typically seven or eight nights) will attract slightly younger passengers, while 10-14 night and longer cruises will see older travelers onboard, so choose wisely.

9. UnCruise Adventures

wilderness adventurer public gallery

Finally, we have UnCruise Adventures, a small and unique cruise line that caters to the true adventures at heart. The line offers itineraries to some amazing and remote places that most major cruise lines aren’t able to visit.

Although the pricing for a trip could a little higher than what most major cruise lines offer, Uncruise Adventures doesn’t charge solo cruisers for double occupancy.

Another plus is that their ships are significantly smaller than your traditional cruise ships, making it easier to connect with other singles.

Activities are included in the cruise fare so the line also takes the guesswork out of trying to figure out what to do.

Making UnCruise Adventures a great option for those who are adventurous at heart and are looking to connect with someone with similar interests.

18 Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Bliss offers comfort and privacy in equal doses. It has elegant studio staterooms that accommodate multiple solo cabins. A designated lounge for such travelers is stocked with beverages and snacks. This lounge offers extra privacy since only studio passengers can access this area. It also has numerous venues for active singles interested in mingling and keeping the party going.

Singles can indulge in group-oriented activities like racing others on the Bliss Speedway. Other activities include wine tastings at the Michael Mondavi Family Wine Bar or cocktails while engaging in great conversations at O’Sheehan’s Pub.

17 Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyage offers the perfect cruises for singles. The company typically accommodates travelers hoping to ditch the baby boomer’s way of cruising. From spectacular private beach bonfire parties to organic food choices and deluxe interior design, what else could solo travelers want from such a cruise? Virgin Voyages is famed for small-scale eateries, inventive modern performances, and a hundred percent complimentary Wi-Fi, unlike other cruises that offer buffets and Broadway-style musicals.

16 Discovery Princess

Whoever coined the term ‘paradise’ must have been in Discovery Princess. It features live auctions, a picturesque gallery to read through, and ship-wide public art displays. From attending dancing lessons to having epic nightlife and educational cocktail storytelling experiences, Discovery Princess will offer solo travelers endless activities to keep them making memories to last a lifetime.

Travelers will not have genuinely experienced Discovery Princess without sampling world cuisine from Michelin-star chefs and specialty coffees at the International Café in the European–style Piazza.

15 Holland American Line

This is a fantastic option for those embarking on solo travel around the world . But Holland is best suited for slightly older singles. These ships are the ultimate cruise for travelers hoping to mingle with mature and eligible solo travelers heading for a luxurious getaway. Here, the majority are divorcees or widowers.

Although it is a bit pricier than its counterparts, the quality is top-notch, and the services are out of this world. For instance, Holland American provides a restrained number of solo cabins on their most recent ships, which are more spacious than the Norwegian’s staterooms. They are also equipped with ocean-view windows.

Take advantage of Holland America's Club Orange amenities program to enjoy perks like a dedicated concierge line, complimentary stateroom upgrades, and an in-room breakfast menu.

14 Cunard Line

Cunard Cruise Line offers amazing singles-only cruises. However, it is a bit different from other cruises. Cunard ships, particularly the Queen Mary 11, are usually involved in more extended travel plans. Since the cruise entails numerous ocean crossings, more senior and refined travelers get attracted to the Cunard line. There is a considerable probability of singles finding each other on the Cunard Line since travelers have more sea days than port days.

13 Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama provides remarkable value for single cruisers. It has an exceptional variety for solo travelers in their 20s and 30s, thus making mingling incredibly seamless. From incredible deck dance parties to trivia competitions and social club parties, its general vibe is upbeat.

Solo travelers also tend to have incredible fun in the sun. The adults-only Serenity Deck is the ultimate escape from the frenzy of public venues. The lounge is only accessible to travelers above 21 years old and features sea-view hot tubs, luxurious loungers, and shaded cabanas for relaxation.

12 MSC Cruises

MSC is loved by the millennials, including lots of singles. Solo travelers will have more time to interact with a bigger mix of individuals as passengers keep boarding at different ports during a seven-night cruise in Europe. The singles will love the European vibe that incorporates late-night discos.

11 Nieuw Statendam

Solo travelers who love nature will have unforgettable moments aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam. The luxurious cruises through the Southern Caribbean are magical. Sunseekers will have incredible experiences at Amber Cove, a new port outside Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The aquatic attraction offers breathtaking views and unique experiences. Cruisers can enjoy the swim-up bar and picturesque seaside cabanas at zero charge.

There are also seasonal cruises to check out; travelers can get the most out from cruise trips for the holiday season , for example. Alternatively, if they prefer to go solo backpacking around the world, globe-trotters can check out Hostelworld's new Roamies app designed for solo backpackers .

10 Royal Caribbean Ovation Of The Seas

Solo travelers using Royal Caribbean will be pleasantly surprised with the fun presented on this ship. The most notable feature of this Royal Caribbean singles cruise is the virtual window in the interior’s studio staterooms. The windows make it easy for travelers to experience everything outside that window while cruising. The solo studio option also entails an ocean-view stateroom with a balcony.

Royal Caribbean is also filled with intricate and unique surprises. Travelers can live a day unlike any other with a cruise to CocoCay, a private island destination in the Bahamas. Here, solo travelers can mingle as they indulge in fun activities such as ziplining, snorkeling, helium balloon riding, etc.

Remember to step into the North Star while cruising on the Ovation of The Seas. This unique rotating capsule offers stunning 360-degree views of the surroundings.

9 Uncruise Adventures

Uncruise Adventures is one of the best cruise ship options to leave adventurers with unforgettable memories. Their small size makes it seamless for singles to connect. The line provides travel plans to some incredible and remote places that have been nerve-wracking to even the major cruise lines. With Uncruise Adventures, solo travelers aren’t expected to pay for double occupancy.

8 Halong Bay Party Cruise

Take one's cruise to a new level with a dedicated cruise for young adults. The Halong Bay Party Cruise provides booze and music with plenty of activities. Enjoy being in the company of other fun-loving young people on a party cruise. Halong Bay is located in northeast Vietnam and is famous for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone islands with tropical rainforests. Activities include sightseeing, kayaking, swimming, rock climbing, beach volleyball, and more. The cost is around $160 for two days and one night.

7 Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is famous for attracting one of the youngest demographics in the industry. They have over two dozen "Fun Ships" that are jam-packed with party-related attractions. They have plenty of bars, open-air poolside deck parties, live music, and on the ships, Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon breweries. Imagine enjoying beer brewed onboard the cruise ship. They also boast some of the best nightclubs out at sea.

6 Disney Cruise Line

Disney's ships are known for their younger crowds - some are even dedicated to teens. Some of their boats, like Disney Fantasy, have clubs for teens and tweens. They can have karaoke, dance floors, and other activities. That being said, Disney's ships are better tailored to families with children - but some of their ships may be just what fun-loving solo travelers may be looking for.

5 Fiesta Party Cruise

Not all cruises need to be overnight. If one is going to Miami, consider marking on a nighttime Fiesta Party Cruise . Enjoy seeing Miami at night and dance to one's heart's content to the sound of the DJs while enjoying drinks from the onboard bar. They have multiple trips on Fridays and Saturdays. The cruises last from 9.30 pm to midnight; they also take more weeknight trips during the summer.

4 Celebrity Cruises

Another fantastic cruise line for singles is Celebrity Cruises. Generally, these ships offer a fun atmosphere, plenty of clubs and bars, and opportunities to meet new friends and singles onboard. It's also worth noting that various Celebrity Cruises ships offer single staterooms:

  • Celebrity Edge
  • Celebrity Apex
  • Celebrity Beyond
  • Celebrity Ascent

With these four cruise ships, single passengers can opt for their own little space, away from all the hustle and bustle of the main party decks and other suites. However, if a single person still wants to book a suite, all Celebrity ships have great options with solo queen or king beds. The destinations, including the Bahamas, Mexico, Europe, and even Alaska, are also quite fun.

There are plenty of things to do onboard a Celebrity Cruise and people to encounter! The brand recently unveiled its "Celebrity Beyond" ship , which may be the perfect next-stop for single vacationers.

3 Viking River Cruises

Another cruise line to consider for singles looking to mingle on the open waters is Viking. Generally, Viking River Cruises are smaller ships with fewer people, giving them a more intimate vibe. Many solo travelers recommend using Viking Cruises for vacationing, as the boat feels more like a community.

One thing to remember, however, is that Viking Cruises often run deals for two people, so it might be a fun idea to bring another single friend along for the ride. These boats usually have fewer spots to hang out beside the pool, restaurants, or bars, meaning everyone has to be together. Depending on someone's strategy for meeting new people onboard their cruise ship, this could mean better chances at a connection. It can't hurt to say hello and see where that takes everyone!

2 U River Cruises

Tailored towards millennials, this incredible cruise adopts a hip approach guaranteed to impress singles on an unforgettable 10-day river expedition. The sleek vessels offer exotic cruises around the world with a focus on Europe. And The River Princess is perfectly suited for solo travelers with romantic ambitions.

Its 128-passenger capacity offers a sense of privacy, sophisticated ambiance, and delightful public spaces to mingle with other singles. Passengers can check out the different lounges on the ship with a chance to meet other travelers over a glass of cocktail.

For cruisers who enjoy their own company, there is a library with interesting books to read.

1 Ruby Princess

Boasting unique amenities like movie screenings under the stars and soothing massages at the adult-themed Sanctuary, the Ruby Princess cruise sounds like the perfect cruise for couples. Still, solo travelers can get in on the fun. There's plenty of entertainment onboard, including duty-free shopping stores, a 9-hole putting course, and a fantastic Discovery at SEA program.

The exterior cabins offer dramatic balcony views, and the culinary options are as diverse as they are sumptuous. When darkness sets in, travelers get the opportunity to mingle at the casino or top-deck nightclub as they dance to the wee hours.

The remarkable scenery of Glacier Bay is a highlight on many Alaskan cruise itineraries.

Embark on a journey through Alaska's pristine wilderness aboard a cruise ship, where you can experience the awe-inspiring nature of the last American frontier in comfort.

As you glide past icy fjords and into secluded bays, seize the chance to witness magnificent glaciers up close, and keep your eyes peeled for the mighty bears, whales and eagles that call this rugged landscape home.

However, don't make the mistake of thinking you’ll have peace and quiet. Remote it may be, but Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

Ports such as Skagway can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at once. Smaller ports can easily become overwhelmed with visitors, while popular shore excursions sell out well in advance. As such, there’s a lot to understand about Alaska cruises before booking.

Cruise Lines In Alaska

Most major cruise lines sail in Alaska, ranging from large, modern ships full of amenities, down to smaller, older ships with more outside space and a relaxed vibe. Expedition cruises on even smaller ships focus more on wildlife and geology.

When picking a line and ship, consider your choice of cabin carefully. Although inside cabins offer a cheaper deal, the value of a balcony cabin shouldn't be underestimated. On scenic cruising days, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape—and potentially wildlife—without jostling for position.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries Explained

There are two main types of Alaskan cruise itinerary: the Inside Passage roundtrip, and a one-way Gulf voyage. Each route offers unique opportunities to see both glaciers and wildlife, with specifics depending on the season.

Seven-night Inside Passage cruises typically depart from hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, calling at popular stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Many feature a scenic cruising tour of the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park.

For example, this 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Encore including all those highlights is available between April and October in both 2024 and 2025.

For those seeking deeper exploration, one-way Gulf voyages include the highlights of the Inside Passage route, but also venture closer to the Arctic Circle. Typically, such itineraries start or end at Whittier or Seward near Anchorage.

This 7-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises includes port calls at Sitka, the historic Icy Strait Point, and scenic cruising of the Hubbard Glacier on the way from Vancouver to Seward.

Some cruise lines combine Gulf voyages with curated tours before or after the cruise for a comprehensive Alaska experience. Such tour packages include famous rail journeys, visits to Denali National Park, and optional overnight stays in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Longer Alaskan cruise itineraries, especially those on smaller ships or expedition lines, may include remote locales like Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Port Excursions In Alaska

Exploring ashore on guided excursions is a highlight of any Alaskan cruise. Each port offers unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment and local culture, but the popularity of cruising in the region means advance booking is essential.

Some of the most popular tours may fill up just days after they go on sale, in some cases months before the actual cruise. Consider independent tour options, but read the terms and conditions carefully and check for reviews from previous cruisers.

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular cruise excursion from Juneau on Alaska cruises.

Alaskan capital Juneau is renowned for its glacier tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike through backcountry to the Mendenhall glacier requires a good level of physical fitness, while whale watching boat trips are just as popular.

The historic Skagway train tour along the Klondike route in a vintage coach, featuring stunning vistas and rich gold rush era history, is a must-do.

Cultural tours in Ketchikan often include visits to the Saxman Native Village, where totem poles and traditional dance performances offer insight into the local Tlingit culture.

When To Cruise Alaska

Alaska is not a year-round cruising spot, and the season is shorter than most leading cruise destinations. Alaska’s cruising season ranges from late April to late September.

April : Expect relatively dry days, though not completely devoid of light showers and fog. Bears are only just emerging from their winter slumber so sightings are unlikely, but you may see eagles and humpback whales.

May : With more ship options, relatively dry weather, long hours of daylight, and good value fares, May is a popular time to cruise Alaska before the peak. Wildlife, including migrating shorebirds, whales, and bears, are more visible.

June : Mild temperatures and long daylight hours—up to 19 per day—provide optimal cruising conditions. Enjoy vibrant greenery and more wildlife sightings, but prepare for the possibility of mosquitoes (especially on trips inland) and variable weather.

July : July brings mild temperatures, often reaching the 70s, but it's also the start of the wetter period. Expect long hours of daylight ideal for wildlife sightings, including salmon runs and bear activity. However, peak cruise season means high fares, busier ships, and busier ports. Local produce starts to feature heavily on menus shoreside.

Juneau, Alaska, has a spectacular natural setting and is a gateway to many exciting outdoor ... [+] experiences.

August : Expect rain, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-60s and nights cooling to the upper 40s, and ample wildlife viewing opportunities, as bears and bald eagles are active near salmon streams. Fares, along with the number of daylight hours, fall later in the month.

September : Expect cooler temperatures and frequent rain, which may risk the success of outdoor excursions. Despite less demand, wildlife viewing remains good with bears still active near salmon streams and whales still present in coastal waters. September also offers a chance to see the northern lights .

What To Pack For Alaska Cruises

Packing smart for an Alaska cruise means being prepared for both adventure in the great outdoors and the comforts of cruise life.

An Alaskan journey demands attire for cooler climates. Essentials include a fleece jacket, thermal socks, and a warm hat to combat the cold, along with sweaters and thermal underwear for effective layering. Waterproof gear such as a reliable rain jacket and waterproof pants are crucial for unexpected rain or snow showers.

You should also consider waterproof bags to protect your electronics and important documents during shore excursions.

Sun protection is vital due to the deceptive Alaskan sun. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are necessary to guard against UV rays and snow glare.

Footwear should include waterproof hiking boots for rugged terrain and slip-proof sandals for the deck, accompanied by thermal or wool socks for additional warmth.

For shore excursions, a collapsible backpack and a thermal water bottle will keep you organized and hydrated, while binoculars can greatly enhance wildlife tours. A simple first aid kit, sea-sickness bands, and insect repellent are other wise packing choices.

The newer, the better: How wheelchair users can travel smoothly

what cruise lines do singles cruises

Chris Ricci can walk only short distances at a time, but he has traveled the world on his scooter.

The 57-year-old U.S. Army veteran has limited mobility stemming from a foot injury he sustained in the 1980s and related complications has found cruises an accessible way to explore destinations like Alaska or the Caribbean. Just this month, he, his wife and friends took a week-long Royal Caribbean International cruise to Belize, Honduras and Mexico.

Ricci, who is based in Lakeland, Florida, simply had to drive to Tampa to board the Enchantment of the Seas. “I think it’s pretty easy,” he told USA TODAY. They booked an accessible stateroom for the first time, too.

“It was really big,” said Ricci, who chronicles his cruises and other travels on his YouTube channel, Scootin Around the World.  “I had no problem getting the scooter into the room.”

Cruise ships can offer guests who use mobility devices an accessible, streamlined way to travel. But some extra planning can go a long way toward ensuring the trip goes smoothly. Here’s what to know.

How this adult-only cruise line integrated accessibility into its experiences

Do cruise ships have accessible staterooms for mobility devices?

Cruise lines do offer accessible staterooms, but they’re not all the same. “Make sure that you have the accessible room that's best for you,” said Joy Burns, organization and PR manager at accessible travel booking platform Wheel the World .

For instance, some staterooms may be better suited to motorized wheelchair users, but the setup may not be conducive for passengers who use other kinds of devices, according to her husband, Bert, who has been paralyzed since 1982 and has taken more than 20 cruises.

“If I got a wheelchair-accessible room that's made for a power wheelchair with a Hoyer lift, the bed’s up real high,” he said. “I can’t transfer with a high bed. I use a manual wheelchair, so I’m down low.”

Standard staterooms may also be able to accommodate mobility devices, but guests should familiarize themselves with cruise lines’ requirements.

Passengers booking a standard cabin on Carnival Cruise Line ships must have devices that can fit through a 22-inch-wide doorway, according to its website . The devices must also fold and collapse to allow for safe exit from the room (passengers cannot store mobility devices in corridors or public spaces).

“Guests who bring scooters that are larger than 21" (53.34 cm) wide, or travel with multiple scooters in the same stateroom, must purchase a fully accessible stateroom with a wider doorway (32”, 81.3 cm), or rent a smaller scooter appropriately suited for their stateroom,” the line said on its website. “Guests may be required to have their scooters sized at the time of check-in to ensure it fits in the stateroom.”

Major cruise lines typically have accessibility departments that can help guests navigate the process, according to Sylvia Longmire, an accessible travel writer who runs the blog and travel brand Spin the Globe .

“Talk to the accessibility department to ask the questions and let them know what kind of equipment you're bringing if you're bringing your own stuff,” said Longmire, who has multiple sclerosis and has taken over 30 cruises, most of which have been with a scooter or wheelchair. “Let them know what your ability or disability is, what your level is, what your accessibility requirements are. And that way, they can tell you what kind of cabin you might need, what location, (information) about the ship, and everything before you even call to make the reservation.”

For those booking through a travel agent, she said she “highly” recommends working with someone who has a disability or is an expert in accessible travel.

What cruises are best for guests with mobility devices?

Some destinations may also be better suited to guests with mobility devices than others.

Once, during a New Zealand cruise, the Burnses’ ship hit some rough water, causing Bert to roll out of the casino and crash into the bar (though no one was hurt). Joy recommended researching the conditions of the seas. ( Click here for USA TODAY’S guide to the best times to cruise by region.)

She added that expedition cruises , which often feature activities that require guests to get on and off Zodiac boats, may not be as accessible.

What cruise ship is best for guests with mobility devices?

New ships tend to have more features that can make a trip easier for guests with mobility devices, said the Burnses and Longmire. Those include automatic sliding doors in public spaces, stateroom locks that allow passengers to wave their key to open the door and pool lifts.

“The newer the ship, the better the accessibility,” said Longmire.

Can I get a mobility device through a cruise line?

Guests can arrange to rent mobility devices through vendors like Scootaround or Special Needs at Sea (Longmire is a contract employee for Scootaround).

Rentals may also be available at the cruise terminal, and some lines have a limited number of scooters and wheelchairs available on the ship, according to Longmire. She estimated rentals can run from roughly $80 to $250 depending on the type of equipment, the length of time guests need it and other factors.

Do cruise lines have accessible excursions?

Yes, but options may be limited. Joy said accessible shore excursions available through cruise lines are “few and far between,” and she and Bert have taken cruises where there were none available through the cruise line at all.

Longmire noted that “cruise lines are entirely dependent on the availability of excursions with whoever they're contracting with.” If a given destination doesn’t have wheelchair taxis, for example, that limits cruise lines’ offerings.

Are there blind scuba divers? Here's the accessible way anyone can explore the ocean

When they are available through the line, Longmire said many of them are what she calls windshield tours – bus tours with a group of other passengers that might include one or two 15-minute stops to take photos. “And the rest of it is just seeing everything out the window,” she said.

However, she added that cruise lines “get a little bit better” each year about offering those.

Joy said passengers can also book accessible shore excursions through companies like Wheel the World. Longmire has had luck booking shuttles and tours directly through providers in various ports as well, though guests should take care to be back in time before the ship leaves.

Are tender ports accessible?

When it comes to accessibility at tender ports – where guests have to take a small vessel from the ship to shore – Longmire said it’s “not very black and white.” Cruise ships may let guests board tenders and some have technology to help passengers with wheelchairs do so, but the port’s capabilities may be different.

“Just because you're able to get from the ship to the tender doesn't mean that you'll be able to get from the tender to the dock,” said Longmire.

Rules may differ as well, with some lines allowing guests in manual wheelchairs to use tenders but prohibiting motorized devices. She recommended checking with the accessibility department about those policies.

The Burnses, for their part, have generally found tender ports to be inaccessible, and Joy suggested travelers review itineraries to see how many they include.

Overall, Longmire said her experience on cruises has been “really good,” both for their accessibility and convenience (you can visit multiple places but unpack once, for instance). “I always recommend to wheelchair users for their first travel experience, like, if you don't get seasick and you’re okay with cruises, a cruise is the way to go.”

Norwegian's Giving Joy Programme

Each year during Teacher Appreciation Week, NCL launches Norwegian's Giving Joy contest inviting the public to nominate a deserving educator and recognise their incredible efforts within their classrooms. Since 2019, the programme has received over 58,000 teacher nominations, over 1.8 million votes, awarded more than 250 educators with the holiday of a lifetime, and donated over $445,000 to educators and their schools which has truly helped make an impact in each of their communities. In addition to the prizes, the nomination platform itself recognises hundreds of spectacular individuals, who all too often go underappreciated and unrecognized.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Ryan Price

RYAN PRICE BUCKINGHAM COLLEGIATE CHARTER ACADEMY | VACAVILLE, CA

Mr. Price is an amazing teacher. He takes time out of his day to make sure our class is enjoyable and that English is understandable. He makes sure we're comfortable in his class and works so hard just to be able to provide us with the top-tier education that we as Buckingham students thoroughly enjoy. He deserves a holiday and a rest from the difficult but rewarding life of a teacher, which is why I nominate Mr. Price for the cruise prize on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Carolyn Reardon.

CAROLYN REARDON JAMES OTIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | CHICAGO, IL

Ms. Reardon is a fantastic music educator. Working in the Chicagoland area for over 7 years in general music band and orchestra, she takes programmes that have nothing and makes them into ones that are highly sought-after. Her drive and dedication to her students are unparalleled. Ms. Reardon deserves the world for all that she does for her students. She creates a loving, compassionate, and inclusive space that encourages her students to become the creative souls they were meant to be. Ms. Reardon has worked so hard for 7 years. It's time for her efforts to be honoured and a cruise would be the perfect gift to such an inspiring educator.

Norwegian Giving Joy winner Angelo Mirante.

ANGELO MIRANTE LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL | ARLINGTON, WA

"I was put on this earth to be a teacher. Educators have always had an impact on me, especially when I needed it most. I know the power teachers hold to inspire and motivate students in the right direction. This is not a job or career; in my mind, this is my passion. I make students feel welcome in the classroom and I truly connect with them. If they know I "see" them for who they are, they will succeed. My classroom is full of movie, music and sport posters of all genders and races. The classroom community I build throughout the year makes all students from all walks of life comfortable and happy to be here. This philosophy makes them want to learn. In my opinion, a teacher won't get anywhere with a student if no connection pursues."

Want your travel to come with a side of saving the planet? These are the trips for you

A photo of a cruise ship.

Travel, sadly, hasn’t always had the best reputation when it comes to being environmentally friendly.

Whether it’s the massive carbon outburst caused by flights, wasteful practices in hotels or the ecological impact seen at tourism hotspots, it can be hard to holiday without a sense of guilt.

And with one boat burning as many carbon emissions as 12,000 cars, cruise ships have a bad rep for being toxic.

But, here’s the good news: a number of operators are now cleaning up their act and doing their bit to protect the globe in the hope that travellers can satisfy their wanderlust without sacrificing the environment.

Companies such as AE Expeditions, Majestic, Hurtigruten and MSC Cruises are making inroads to protect the planet with a range of initiatives that have landed them the shortlisted nominations for the Sailawaze Excellence Awards – where you can vote to enter the draw to win a cruise.

Vote for your chance to win a cruise

Do you love cruising? Are you an intrepid traveller? Maybe you just like looking at pictures of luxe ships. No matter which, we want you to vote!

Metro has partnered with the  Sailawaze Excellence Awards , highlighting the very best in cruising when it comes to sustainability, wellness, entertainment and beyond.

And we need YOU to simply select what you’ve been most impressed by.

The best bit? By voting you’ll automatically be in with a chance of winning a cruise for two worth £2,500.

Say bon voyage to the more traditional categories of ‘best large ship’ or ‘best luxury cruise line’ and instead ahoy to innovation, food and drink and showstopping performances.

Vote for your favourite here .

MSC Cruises

Last year, MSC Cruises operated the industry’s first net-zero greenhouse gas emissions voyage from Saint-Nazaire, France to Copenhagen, Denmark . And over the past two years, it launched two Liquefied Natural Gas-powered ships, MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia, which emit far lower levels of pollutants and particulates than traditional heavy fuel oil.

In late 2019, MSC transformed an industrial sand excavation site in the Bahamas into an exclusive private island, progressively rebuilding the marine ecosystem. Sounds like a great spot for a holiday.

AE Expeditions

Fancy a guilt-free trip to the South Pole? Carbon-neutral company AE Expeditions aim to help travellers explore the world’s wildest places – Antarctica , the Arctic and beyond – while reducing their climate impact.

The food on board AE ships claims to be sustainably sourced, with not a fish egg or tuna dish on the menu. The company also supports clean-up initiatives, is in the process of removing all single-use plastic from its boats and partners with conservationists like explorer and oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle in a bid to promote sustainable and responsible travel.

The Majestic Line

Scottish cruisers the Majestic Line take recycling to a new level, with its first ships being rescued from the fishing industry and converted into hospitable and comfortable boats thanks to recycled and reused materials.

Setting sail from the Scottish Isles means you won’t need to take a plane to get there and the company has been assessed by Green Tourism to validate its practices.

Whether reducing paper in the company’s offices, purchasing seasonal and locally-produced food for the boats or reusing uniforms and bedding, the Majestic Line aims to protect the planet while you explore it.

Portsmouth International

Port Britain’s biggest municipal port, which handles millions of customers and items of cargo every year, wants to be net zero by 2030 and zero emission by 2050.

To do this, Portsmouth International Port has become home to an enormous solar canopy array, housing more than 2,660 solar panels, and is introducing an ambitious shore power system across the three busiest berths to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
