Stage 6: Juan Ayuso secures overall as Carlos Rodríguez wins finale / As it happened

A searing late attack has netted  Juan Ayuso  (UAE Team Emirates) the overall of  Itzulia Basque Country  and the biggest win of his career, while Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos-Grenadiers) claimed the final ultra-tough stage 6 victory.

Rodriguez's and Ayuso’s unspoken alliance allowed the two to power into the finish line with roughly 40 seconds advantage on over night leader Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek)  -  Rodriguez taking the stage, and both moving onto the GC podium.

Stage 5: Romain Gregoire wins stage 5 / As it happened

Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) won stage 5 of Itzulia Basque Country in a bike throw across the line, out-pacing Orluis Aular (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), who finished second. Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) took third in a reduced field sprint.

Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) retained his hold on the yellow jersey for a second day, headed to the finale on Saturday. He is just two seconds ahead of Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and four seconds better than Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates).

Stage 4: Meintjes wins subdued stage 4 after major crash neutralises peloton / As it happened

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty) broke free of his five breakaway partners with 10km to go and crossed the finish line first on Thursday's fourth day at Itzulia Basque Country. It was an understated victory for the South African, as the final 35km were neutralised for the peloton after a major crash on a descent brought down many riders, including race leader Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), second-placed Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and contender Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Organisers allowed the breakaway to complete the race, after taking out the Untzilla mountain pass, and all riders were given the same time on general classification. With both Roglič and Evenepoel out the race, Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) moved from third to first as race leader.

Stage 3: Quinten Hermans wins uphill sprint on stage 3 while Roglic survives crash / As it happened

Quinten Hermans won a hectic field sprint on stage 3 of Itzulia Basque Country in Altsasu for his first win with Alpecin-Deceuninck. Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) retained the race leader's jersey after chasing back into the front group following a crash with 40km to go.

Stage 2: Paul Lapeira wins slippery sprint in rain on stage 2 / As it happened

Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) won stage 2 of the  Itzulia Basque Country at the front of a reduced group of favourites. From the chaotic finale on wet roads in Kanbo, the young Frenchman passed Astana Qazaqstan rider Samuele Bastistella for his first WorldTour victory. Bastistella finished second and Louis Vervaeke (Soudal-QuickStep) was third.

Race leader Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Jonas Vingegaard (VIsma-Lease a Bike) finished safely in the front group of some 30 riders, ahead of a large crash with around four kilometres. Caught behind and finishing 23 seconds back was Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates), who dropped from second overall to 14th.

Stage 1: Primoz Roglic takes stage win despite late detour / As it happened

Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) recorded the fastest time in the individual time trial at Itzulia Basque Country's opening day, 12:34, and took the first leader’s jersey. Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) placed second, seven seconds back, and Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) was three seconds farther back in third.

An early crash by Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) kept him off the podium by one second and he was fourth across the 10km course. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) completed his ride in 12:49, good for fifth place.

Just 15 seconds separate the top five riders, Roglič in pursuit of his third title at the Spanish stage race.

Itzulia Basque Country information

The Itzulia Basque Country has its 63rd edition in 2024 with a short time trial and mountainous final stage the main features of the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country route.

The race began in 1924 when it was known as the GP Excelsior, with early winners including Francis Pellissier, 1929 Tour de France winner Maurice De Waele, and, in 1935, Gino Bartali.

In 1936, the race shut down seemingly for good due to the Spanish Civil War. Despite Francisco Franco's oppressive reign though, there were several attempts to resume the race in Bilbao and San Sebastián, none of which took hold.

In the 1950s, it was resurrected as a race in Eibar, which became the Eibarko Bizikleta, later the Euskal Bizikleta, and then the Tour of the Basque Country in 1969.

Jacques Anquetil, Luis Ocaña (twice), Sean Kelly (three times), and record four-time winner José Antonio González Linares were among the winners in the 18 years before the race split apart again, with the Euskal Bizikleta going solo in until re-merging with the Tour of the Basque Country after the global financial crisis of 2008.

In the meantime, Tony Rominger dominated the race in the early 1990s, while Iban Mayo, Denis Menchov and Danilo Di Luca were among the notable victors of the 2000s. UCI regulations introduced in 2006 heralded the end of the split-stage format – one road stage, one time trial – which had been part of the race since 1969, substituted by the six-day structure that exists today.

Race organisers rejected a buyout proposal from Vuelta a España organisers Unipublic shortly after the 2008 financial crisis, while the Euskal Bizikleta merger brought aboard the Alto de Arrate climb in 2009, forming the race we know today.

In 2012, financial problems reappeared as the local government backers ran into trouble, with the race at serious risk of stopping altogether. However, a combination of fund-raising channels – including from fans, and sponsorship from Banco Sabadell Guipuzcoano – saved it.

Four years later, Alberto Contador won his fourth edition of the race, equalling José Antonio González Linares record in one of the final victories of his storied career. Primož Roglič's win in 2021 was his second, his final day comeback adding another strand of history to the famed Arrate.

Last year, Jonas Vingegaard won the overall.

Itzulia Women 2024: Route, How to Watch, and Favorites

As the three-day stage race kicks off in Spain, top contenders Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser face off against fierce competition on a challenging mountainous route.

How to Watch Itzulia Women in the U.S. and Canada

How to watch itzulia women in the uk, riders to watch, iztulia women startlist, race history.

Itzulia Women is only in its third year, but already it’s attracted a star-studded field. Past winners include Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser (SD Worx-Protime), both of whom will be racing again this year. Last year, Reusser and Vollering went 1-2, with Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM) in third overall.

This year, the three-day race comes at a great time: On the heels of the Vuelta Feminina, it’s a good chance for riders to add extra race days in sunny Spain. And with the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas coming up next week (May 16th through 19th), also in Spain, the race ensures that riders keep their legs sharp for a long racing block.

This year marks the most mountainous edition of the course, with nine mountain passes: one Category 1, two Category 2, and six Category 3 climbs.

Stage 1: Vitoria-Gasteiz to Elgoibar (140 km)

The first stage is also the longest—tough for racers who just finished the Vuelta Feminina just a few days ago! The 1473 meters of climbing over the 140 km includes the Olaeta pass climb, where the race organizers anticipate seeing a breakaway or solo attack go.

itzulia women 2024 route

Stage 2: Basauri to Basauri (104 km)

Stage 1 might be the longest, but the elevation gain ramps up in the final two stages: Over 104 km, the racers will climb 1547 meters.

itzulia women 2024 route

Stage 3: Donostia to Donostia (114.9 km)

The biggest climbing day of the race, Stage 3 boasts almost 1800 meters of elevation gain. The route simulates the San Sebastian Classic, a one-day men’s race in August, and finishes with a climb up the Murgil wall to Mendizorrotz, followed by a blistering descent and a final slog to the finish—make sure you’re tuned in to watch the finale, especially if there’s still a group together.

itzulia women 2024 route

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that the race will be live-streamed in North America. Check the Itzulia Women YouTube for race highlights after each stage.

In the UK, you can catch live coverage of the 2024 Itzulia Women on Discovery+ . A standard Discovery+ subscription costs £6.99 per month or £59.99 annually and grants access to Eurosport’s cycling coverage and a wide range of other live sports.

The race will also be streamed live on Amazon with a Discovery+ subscription.

This race is very likely going to be SD Worx-Protime’s race to lose since many of the other teams are holding back some of their stronger riders and race leaders, likely to give them a break before next week’s Vuelta a Burgos Feminas. Still, nothing is guaranteed.

7th liege bastogne liege 2023 women's elite

Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) - Vollering won the race in 2022 and was second to her teammate last year. She had a fantastic ride at the Vuelta Feminina earlier this week, and assuming she’s not exhausted, it’s a safe bet that she’ll be up at the front of this race.

8th setmana ciclista volta comunitat valenciana femines 2024 stage 2

Marlen Reusser (SD Worx-Protime) - Reusser won last year and has said she’s ready to go for a second win at this race. She had a rough early season due to illness and injury, but she rode well in the Vuelta Feminina and is clearly back in fighting form.

27th la fleche wallonne feminine 2024

Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon//SRAM) - After finally taking a Classics win at La Flèche Wallonne , Niewiadoma would normally be the rider to watch in terms of women who stand a chance against the SD Worx behemoth. But she had a rough Vuelta Feminina and pulled out of the last stage, citing illness, so it’s TBD if she’ll be fully recovered by tomorrow.

4th navarra women's elite classics 2024

Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek) - Van Anrooij is still looking for a win this season despite hitting the podium several times. Unlike Vollering, Reusser, or Niewiadoma, she didn’t race the Vuelta Feminina last week, so she has a bit more recovery in her legs. Will that help or hinder?

10th la vuelta femenina 2024 ndash stage 7

Juliette LaBous (dsm–Firmenich PostNL) - Finally, LaBous has been in quite a few breakaways this season and was fourth at the Vuelta Feminina. She’s always a podium contender, but has yet to have that breakaway ride that puts her in true contention for the overall.

A few notables mentions:

  • Keep an eye on the Holmgren sisters (Lidl-Trek): Isabella Holmgren has two junior world championship titles to her name (MTB and cyclocross), and her sister Ava is just as skilled on the bike. The twins are in their first year of WorldTour level racing but have already had some impressive results, and we won’t be surprised if one of them snags a stage win or podium.
  • A glance at the roster shows no EF Education First-Cannondale team on the start line. That’s a bummer since watching Alison Jackson and Kristen Faulkner crush it at the Vuelta Feminina last week was a real treat.

Jonas Vingegaard 'improving so fast' with Tour de France 2024 in sight, according to his coach

Eurosport

Published 16/05/2024 at 17:31 GMT

Jonas Vingegaard's coach Tim Heemskerk has been encouraged in recent weeks by the progress the Dane is making as he continues his recovery from serious injuries sustained at the Itzulia Basque Country. Heemskerk believes the two-time Tour de France champion will be fit enough to ride at this year's Grand Tour, which begins on June 29, if he continues to progress at the speed he currently is.

Wout is Back! Van Aert Returns in Norway, Without Guarantee of Tour de France

Van aert will race for the first time in eight weeks at the four-day tour of norway, with a possible tour de france start hanging in balance: 'i'm not in the best shape.'.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Wout van Aert will return to competition next week at the Tour of Norway after the Belgian brawler missed the northern monuments due to injury.

Visma-Lease a Bike officials confirmed that Van Aert is healthy enough to resume racing. After crashing out of Dwars door Vlaanderen in late March, he’s been slowly easing back into training.

Van Aert was sidelined eight weeks with a fractured collarbone, ribs and sternum, and he isn’t making any big promises.

“I’m not in the best shape, it’s a test,” Van Aert said Friday. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Van Aert’s injuries forced him to miss much of his beloved and elusive northern classics as well as skip a planned Giro d’Italia debut.

The four-stage Tour of Norway (May 23-26) will be his first touch at racing since Dwars.

“It hasn’t always been easy sitting on the sidelines, but fortunately, I can now look ahead again”, Van Aert said. “I am looking forward to pinning on a race number again. I have been able to train more and more in recent weeks, but it is still different from racing. So, my main goal is to test myself and see how I do in a race. Without any expectations.”

Uncertainty about the Tour de France: ‘We don’t know yet’

Van Aert and Vingegaard, Visma-Lease a Bike

Van Aert’s return is at least a green shoot of good news following weeks of setbacks, injuries, and illnesses that have ravaged the grand tour-smashing “Killer Bees.”

The team is also reeling from injuries to two-time defending Tour de France king Jonas Vingegaard , who is also on the comeback trail from his horrific crash in April at Itzulia Basque Country.

After sweeping all three grand tours last year in an unprecedented treble, the team’s hopes at the 2024 Giro have been crushed with a viral infection inside the team bus at the Giro d’Italia. Four riders have been forced to leave due to illness and injuries, including stage winner Olav Kooij and GC candidate Cian Uijtdebroeks.

Team officials tamped down expectations of any blistering results, and hinted that there’s still no firm decision on whether or not Van Aert will race the Tour .

“It’s great to have Wout back in the team after his crash. He starts without any pressure to perform,” said sport manager Merijn Zeeman, who is leaving the team to join a soccer club. “This is a good moment for him to test himself in competition again.

“We don’t know yet what the rest of his race schedule will look like. We will see in the coming weeks,” he said of the Tour. “We are taking things one step at a time. That has proven to be the best way to recover.”

Van Aert will be joined in Norway by Bart Lemmen, Koen Bouwman, Tijmen Graat, Menno Huising and Per Strand Hagenes, officials said.

While the Tour remains unknown, Van Aert is still hoping to hit the Olympic Games road race at full strength on August 18. The Vuelta a España and world championships are also now major late-season targets.

Tour of the Basque Country 2024: The Route

Tour of the Basque Country 2024

Stage 1 is a 10 kilometres long ITT. The route features a 1.7 kilometres climb at 5.2%, plus two short and sharp ramps – the first shortly after the start, the second just before the finish.

The 2nd stage is played out on a 160 kilometres long route with an elevation gain of 2,300 metres. The race goes up and down from start to finish. Although the hills in itself are hardly worth mentioning, it’s the sheer repetition that will wear the riders out.

The longest race of the week adds up to 190.9 kilometres. While featuring six climbs, the elevation gain of stage 3 exceeds 3,000 metres – yet, the final 18 kilometres are a flat run-in to the line.

Stage 4 features prolonged sections on the flat, but also four climbs, the last three of which are situated on the 50 kilometres long finishing circuit. The final uphill is a punchy ramp of 3 kilometres at 8.7% before the last 9.3 kilometres are as good as flat.

Following a 5.5 kilometres climb at 9.5% around the midway marker, the 5th stage comes down to 1.5 runs on a 27 kilometres long finishing circuit. The lap features two short climbs and these are both featured twice. The Muniketa Gaina is 3.5 kilometres long and averages 7.3% and the other one – unclassified – slopes for 1.7 kilometres at 4.4%. The last 4.6 kilometres go downhill in the first half and then flatten out.

The decisive final stage of the Itzulia Basque Country boasts an elevation gain of 3,400 metres on a 137.8 kilometres route with seven classified ascents. The last climb is crested with 22 kilometes to go before the downhill leads onto a false flat run-in to the finish line in Eibar.

It’s tight atop the AdventHealth Championship golf leaderboard at Blue Hills C.C.

Thinking of heading out to Blue Hills Country Club for Saturday’s penultimate round of the AdventHealth Championship golf tournament?

Two pieces of advice for those joining the gallery: bring sunscreen and brace for an exciting logjam atop the leaderboard.

With plentiful mid-80s sunshine again in store for Saturday, no fewer than seven professional golfers will return to the sprawling Blue Hills track either leading or within 3 strokes for Round 3.

Alistair Docherty, a 30-year-old from Vancouver, Washington who played at Cal State-Chico, became the man to beat Friday with a second-round score of 6-under 66 on the par-72 course.

Paired with his first-day round of 65, Docherty is at 13-under halfway through the tournament.

Ryan Gerard, a 2022 UNC Tar Heels grad, occupies second place at 12-under after firing a Friday 66 that matched his opening-round score.

First-day co-leader Jeff Overton was one of three golfers at 11-under. Two more were knotted at 10-under.

As for some of the local entrants in this week’s competition:

  • Blue Valley North grad Harry Higgs moved up 44 spots Friday, carding a 5-under 67 after shooting an opening-round 71. He’s at 6-under.
  • Former K-State standout Robert Streb went the other direction. After opening with a 69, he shot 71 Friday to sit at 4-under entering Saturday’s third round.
  • And former Shawnee Mission East and KU Jayhawks standout Chase Hannah shot even-par 72 following a Thursday 70. He was 2-under through two rounds.

The projected cut line Friday night was 4-under.

Some 156 pros were competing in the annual four-day, 72-hole event in KC. The field was to shrink, though, as some failed to make the cut for the weekend.

The Korn Ferry Tour is the developmental feeder tour for the PGA, and the AdventHealth Championship is the Korn Ferry season’s 10th of 26 tour stops.

The Korn Ferry Tour will this year award 30 PGA Tour cards to top players based on points earned throughout the lower series’ 2024 season. Korn Ferry alumni currently comprise some 83% of the PGA Tour’s membership.

This is the 14th year of AdventHealth’s sponsorship — the health care system earlier this week re-upped through 2029 — and fifth straight time the tourney has taken place at Blue Hills.

Past AdventHealth champions include two-time PGA Tour winners Sepp Straka (who won here in 2018), reigning event champion Grayson Murray (2023) and Cameron Young (2021), who currently ranks No. 16 in the world.

Tickets for this year’s AdventHealth Championship — $10 for adults per day — are available at www.adventhealthchampionship.com/tickets . Admission’s free for those 17 and younger, members of the military and AdventHealth workers with identification.

According to a news release, last year’s AdventHealth Championship “raised nearly $250,000 for the tournament’s benefactor, the AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation, to distribute through the Play It Forward program, which aims to support fundraiser awareness and assist philanthropic needs.”

The event has generated nearly $1 million in funds for local charities in the Kansas City community since 2009, according to AdventHealth Championship officials.
