Outback couple rebuilds Muckadilla pub that burnt down and 'saves' the town
It was made famous in Geoff Mack's song "I've Been Everywhere", but when Muckadilla's pub burnt down in 2019, locals feared the outback town with just 60 residents would disappear off the map.
The patron and service station owner Darryl Slater was 78 years old and it took him took weeks to come to terms with the devastating loss.
"The pub was the centre of the place, and it was the meeting place for locals," Mr Slater said.
"I just couldn't even bear to go out and have a look," Mr Slater said.
The Mucka pub, 40 kilometres west of Roma, had been the "heart and soul" of the small Maranoa community for more than a century.
Two years and a global pandemic later, a resurrected Mucka Pub is about to open its doors to thirsty locals and visitors.
Burnt to the ground
The Mucka Pub was destroyed in a matter of minutes when wind blew flames from a fire next door into the pub's air conditioning duct.
"We sat here and watched it burn to the ground and it was horrible. The whole community almost cried," farmer Christy Coomber said.
"I think we knew straight away that [former owners] John and Sue [McIntosh] wouldn't be in a position to rebuild because John was a bit ill."
It took just two days for Ms Coomber and her husband Marty to take on the task of rebuilding.
"We were a little bit stale in farming, sick of the drought," Ms Coomber said.
"We didn't want to get rid of the farm … but figured the pub would be a wonderful way to give ourselves a little bit of spice back and enjoy going to work."
Keeping it local
Unlike building material shortages elsewhere during the pandemic, builder Rob Pollock had no such trouble, with most of the materials sourced locally.
"It's been really easy … it's a lot of recycled materials. A lot of the products have been sourced locally as well," Mr Pollock said.
"This has been the most amount of fun that I've ever had in the building career. It's the best project we've done by far."
As a Roma local, Mr Pollock had fond memories of the pub and was happy to play a part in the rebuild.
"We all had our 18th birthday parties and our 21st birthday parties out here … it's just such an iconic spot here at Muckadilla," he said.
"We always go west, and you always pull up here and have a beer.
"If this didn't happen, the township would be dead… we would cry every time we drove past, I reckon."
A beer and a yarn
For Marty Coomber the opening has come at the right time for the farming community.
"We've got harvest coming up, and big wheat harvest around here… so it's a place for everybody to congregate and have a beer and have a yarn about what's going on," he said.
"I just want to see smiles and laughter. There's nothing better than tables full of people laughing.
"We've always been the type of people that love other people's company."
"There's no Muckadilla without a pub … there really isn't."
Loyal following
Two years is a long time for a town without a watering hole, and anticipation has been high among locals and tourists alike, with one club booking a visit before the pub had even opened.
Ms Coomber said the pub has always enjoyed a loyal following from across Australia.
"We've got support from Brisbane, we've got support from Rockhampton, Townsville, as far away as Perth," she said.
"We've got people everywhere, just contacting us all the time wanting to come and spend some time here.
"So hopefully, in the future, they'll be able to, but at the moment it's just going to be for Queensland."
While the previous owners, John and Sue McIntosh, have since moved away, Darryl Slater was once again looking forward to having a steak sandwich for Sunday dinner at the pub.
"I'm getting too old to go too often, but I'll probably go there to have a feed now and again and [watch] the State of Origin – I don't think I've missed a State of Origin at the pub since I've been here," he said.
Ms Coomber said she hoped the reopening would also put Muckadilla back on the map for travellers.
"I want it to be a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere, a happy place for people who just want to forget about it for a minute and yeah, it's a great little town," she said.
"Why wouldn't you want to come out there? It's fantastic."

I was on a guided hunt with Muckadilla Safaris again south of Pine Creek, NT stalking pigs in amazing, near prehistoric type country when a sizeable boar was spotted in the scrub before succumbing to a well-placed shot from a 35 Whelan rifle.
