Irish Airports

The main transatlantic and long-haul airports in Ireland are Dublin and to a lesser extent Shannon . The vast majority of transatlantic flights come through Dublin. There are also airports in Belfast , Cork , Kerry and Knock (Ireland West Airport) but these are for regional (European and UK) destinations only.

The Irish national carrier is Aer Lingus , though many international airlines do long-haul flights into Ireland. For European flights, Ryanair and Aer Lingus are the main two, though again there are countless other airlines operating flights from Ireland to the rest of Europe.

Option 1: Arrange a Private Tour

Private tours are tours that can depart on any date and visit almost any location in Ireland. The major benefit of private tours is that you are in control. You set the pace of the tour, you decide on the locations to be visited and how long you wish to stay there. You typically won't meet other tourers on a private tour but you will have more free time to meet local people. If you don't mind the lack of a built-in social group (of a scheduled tour) there is no finer way to see the island of Ireland. The freedom to go where you want, when you want and at your own pace is the main reason people choose private tours.

USE THIS COMPANY. Little Gem Tours provided every service they promised, and more. Several hotel staff along the way commented Little Gem is one of only two tour companies they trust and with whom they will work. I asked why. In ease case it was explained to me some tour companies don't actually have rooms reserved. Some tour companies change drivers - if they have one - right in the middle of your ride. Some tours companies do not maintain vehicles. Etc. Little Gem tours is professional. All the details are perfectly set. Their employees are friendly, knowledgeable!! and helpful. Jimmy Mulrooney was our driver for the week. FANTASTIC. But, the star of the program is Rosie Doonie. Rosie is detail oriented and didn't miss a thing. Use Little Gem & enjoy.

We used Little Gem Tours for two days while we were in Ireland. The first day we went to Newgrange. It was a wonderful day that Robbie planned with a great restaurant for lunch and a comfortable van for the seven in our group. The next day we went to Belfast and the Giants Causeway that was another great day. Well planned and a comfortable trip.

My wife and I hired Little Gem for an 8 day Tour of Ireland. We had never been to the country before. They were extremely easy to contact, and helped us set up the tour. They asked about what we wanted to see, and really wanted to know what was important to us. They made a number of suggestions of places that most people don't even know about. They kept in touch with us constantly with updates. We had Robbie the first four Days, and Bobby the last four days. Both of the drivers were a lot of fun, and very informative. One of the biggest reasons we chose a private tour was the flexibility. On a bus your stuck going wherever its taking you no matter what happens to the weather. Our drivers could make last minute changes which really helped us maximize all the things we could see. They have a Farm tour I would highly recommend to anyone going. You stay at a little cottage on the farm which was really fun. They have a ton of activities you can take part in like a bog tour, sheep dog show, live folk music by the fire, and other things as well. We had an absolute blast hanging out with the local people. If your thinking of booking a private tour I highly recommend calling these guys. You will not be sorry!! Totally worth it!!

What an amazing experience! Robbie was a wealth of historical knowledge, was well organized and it showed how much he cared about ireland. We had a choice of a 70 person bus or a small venue with Robbie, and we made the right choice!! We visited castles that were off the beaten path as well as the cliffs of moher and a mom & pop Chocolate factory. I gained such a better perspective of Ireland, the culture and history. I highly recommend Little Gem as the best way to go beyond a Dublin visit. I look forward to coming back for the multi-day tour of Ireland! Thank you Robbie!

…a fabulous trip from beginning to end – April 2024 This was a fabulous trip from beginning to end, including the Cliffs of Moher, Burren National Park, the sheep farm in Leenane, the falconry at Ashford Castle, Slieve League, the walls of Derry, and the tour of Belfast, just to name a few. Our first driver, Siobhan Morrissey, was a wealth of information about forestry and agriculture, which she is currently studying. Glenn in Derry and Rory in Belfast gave us in-depth tours. The incomparable Mary O'Leary, our guide from Cong to the end as she was in our trip to the south in 2017, was attentive and thorough in every way, and helped two of our group look for graves of ancestors. Highly recommend – this was one of the best experiences of our lives! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ – April 2024 We just returned from an 11 day trip around Ireland and Northern Ireland with 3 other couples, via Ireland Chauffeur Travel, and it was by far one of the best experiences of our lives. We worked with Sam to do all the pre planning, and the hotel accommodations he booked for us were all beautiful, clean and comfortable, with great breakfasts included each day. The vans were also comfortable, with plenty of room for the 8 of us and all our luggage. Because of the duration of our trip, we ended up having two different drivers. Our first driver, Kieran, became more of a friend along the way, took us to several hidden gems, and did an excellent job sharing his knowledge of each area, and helping our group decide on options each day. Our second driver, Martin, was also very knowledgeable and friendly, and his dinner recommendations were always spot on! Fantastic way to see and experience so much of Ireland! Our guide, Sean, was excellent and kept things running smoothly, as well as being knowledgeable and entertaining. Had a great time and would highly recommend this trip.

We had a fantastic time on a 10-day Tour with this company. Our group was only 7 so it was quite comfy and felt very personalized but I know they would make even the largest group feel right at home. Lee our guide was absolutely great and he went out of his way to make the trip as personal as could be and worked hard to either stay ahead of or avoid altogether the bandwagons of hordes that otherwise crowd the the usual spots. Getting to out of the way locations and having benefit of seemingly local-only knowledge contributed greatly to the sense of awe we were left with at the conclusion of the journey. I highly recommend this provider!

Quality or quantity is your choice. The tour list plenty of cities you get to visit and sounds like a great value; it’s wasn’t. London and the two cities Cambridge, and York were very good. I enjoyed them Windsor even after paying extra. Scotland was a different story. Edinburgh was nice we had a guided tour on the bus and an hour and a half of free time. Edinburgh has a history museum: where they kept the first cloned sheep; never even seen the building from the outside. The hotel was a twenty minute ride back into town. We checked in at 20:00 or 8 pm. Needing to be up and ready to leave by eight in the morning negates taking a bus for twenty minutes. Hotel location should have been closer to city center not the edge of town. Then we spent a day going through the Scottish Highlands to the Loch where Nessie is supposed to reside. The boat ride and time at the castle ruins while picturesque ate up three hours. We arrived in Glasgow at 8pm or 20:00 right from the freeway to the hotel. Glasgow was a complete and total disappointment. The hotel was set up for the thirty and under crowd all industrial and noisy. I didn’t care for it and the others in my group agreed it was the worst we stayed at. Now it was clean and modern just not a relaxing place. Rooms were tiny and there wasn’t a chair in it; just an ottoman looking thing to sit on. Only part of Glasgow we were able to see was when the bus took some riders to the train station. Then we were off to Ireland. Belfast was our first stop. Dropped off at the capital building and given two hours. No drive by the Titanic museum no history of Belfast except for a light touching of the troubles and a brief mention of the peace wall. I didn’t bother taking the Dublin tour and did my laundry that morning. I spoke with people who did the tour and wasn’t impressed by their experience. I did a full trip around the island exactly one year before and had pictures on my phone. When asked did they show you this or that the answer was generally no. Cork they set us down across the street from a department store and gave us an hour before we had to get on the bus to go to the hotel. No tour of Cork no history. Hotel again was far enough you couldn’t just walk in the time we had. The roast of the trip was the same story over and over again. The hotels while nice and clean were never where you could get out and about to enjoy and explore by yourself. I was looking forward to Galway as it was one of my favorite spots visited last year; the mall built with a castle wall inside it. Didn’t have time to go there if I also wanted to eat dinner. I did see two sights in Ireland I didn’t see last time. Filming location for The Quit Man and a monastery relics in the middle of Ireland. So this was quantity over quality and I wasn’t impressed.

The first part of the tour (Paris and London) the tour guide seemed inexperienced and gave inconsistent meeting times which confused many in the group. The driver was rude but did drive well.

Adrian was a great driver, I felt he did a wonderful job navigating the treacherous roads. Gordon, our team guide, was a good sport and tried his best to keep us all on schedule. He was knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. I am not sure that he liked the driver though. There seemed to be some tension between them. I thought the Dingle peninsula area was spectacular. I loved the sheep dog demo, the farm visits and nature visits throughout. The hotels were all comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were plentiful. The entertainment options were lovely.

This 13 day highlight of the best that Britain an Ireland have to offer was full of amazing opportunities to taste the culture and meet locals that lovel and adore their country and the history that holds. His attention to details and the extras to make the group feel welcomed and special. My personal experience on my special day was made even more heart warming by Greg's kindness and effort in make sure that I felt loved and acknowledge with an celebration at the evening meal. We recently did the 5 day escape to west Ireland with Rabbie's tour. Our driver Vinny was so fun and knowledgeable. He went the extra mile to make sure we had adequate rest room breaks, and even set us up one night to see the "Celtic Steps" perform in Killarney. Vinny also found us a very nice lunchtime restaurant where super fresh Atlantic lobster was served. The van was new, very roomy and comfortable. The usual touristy sites were included, with monasteries, high crosses, Blarney, and the famous cliffs. The days were long, but we aren't youngsters anymore. Expect to see a lot and create a pile of new memories.

• Keep in mind that the island of Ireland is made up of two countries: the independent Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. Be prepared to use different currencies if you’re travelling over the border.
• Be sure to pack rain gear, no matter when you travel. Ireland is generally wet, and some mountainous areas see up to 2000 mm of rain each year!
• Consider renting a car to really take in the beautiful coastal views Ireland has to offer - but be wary of its narrow, windy roads.
• Get ready to eat some hearty comfort food. Some must-tries are a lamb Irish stew, colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage or kale), and a full Irish breakfast.
• While Ireland is an English-speaking country, it may be helpful to learn some Irish slang before you go. For example, something that is “good craic” is something entertaining or fun.
• Be prepared for some swearing.
