I have owned many mtn bikes (20+) ,if ur lookin for a fast climbing machine that descends very well ,this is a great choice. Just got mine ,it's wonderful. I will let u knw in August how it held up. Trek Superfly SS review

Affordable singlespeed XC racer

The Trek Superfly SS is quite the rig. Yes, that was a pun, and yes, it was intended. You see, this bike has a legacy stretching back a decade to the introduction to the introduction of the Gary Fisher Rig for the 2005 model year.

A lot has changed since then – the Fisher brand was assimilated into Trek, 29er geometry finally got sorted out, and 26in vs 29in disputes have been replaced by 27.5in vs 29in arguments. What hasn’t changed is the fact that big wheels and singlespeed drivetrains go together like peanut butter and jelly (with apologies to UK readers). The purple accents on the matte-black frame may hearken back to the original Rig, but the Superfly SS is thoroughly modern machine.

Frame and equipment: simple and straightforward

Starting at the front, the Superfly SS sports Bontrager’s new Bowie carbon fork. The stock fork has an alloy steerer to keep the price in check, though the US$450 aftermarket Bowie Pro version sports a tapered carbon steerer. Much like carbon forks offered by Niner and Enve, the Bowie features a 15mm thru axle. It also has integrated guides for the front brake and enough clearance for 29 rubber, should you feel the need to beef up the volume to take the edge off the Superfly’s rigid ride.

The Superfly SS frame is essentially the same alloy chassis as Trek’s geared Superfly hardtails, minus the cable stops and ports for internal routing. The tubing is heavily shaped, particularly around the press-fit BB95 bottom bracket.

Unlike the other members of the Superfly line, the Superfly SS sports a clever sliding 142x12mm axle system. At first glance, the rear brake mount appears to be attached to the chainstay. Closer inspection reveals that it’s actually part of the sliding assembly, so there’s never a need to realign the caliper after removing the wheel or tensioning the chain.

The Race Face narrow/wide chainring might be overkill for singlespeeding, but it sure is pretty

A singlespeed with a properly tensioned chain doesn’t have a need for the stock, 32t Race Face narrow/wide chainring, although the color-matched ring is a nice touch that’s sure to win the hearts and minds of matchy-matchy types. Race Face also supplies the crankset, which is appropriately stiff for single-minded mashing.

While superfluous for singelspeed drivetrains, this narrow/wide chainring might come in handy if you decide to run the Superfly SS with a 1x drivetrain. Trek offers a geared, drive-side slider for the Superfly SS, although the absence of cable guides would require resorting to zip-ties to route full-length shift housing along the frame.

The Shimano Deore disc brakes are outstanding for the price — they truly buck the law of diminishing returns with exceptional modulation that would give top-end brakes from a few short years ago a run for their money.

The stock stamped 18t steel cog is a bit of a throwaway item, but that’s fine, considering the fact that cogs wear out and many riders will swap it for a different tooth count to suit their local trails. The Bontrager Mustang rim and fast-rolling XR2 Expert are both tubeless compatible, so you can shave a bit more weight off this 20.4lb/9.3kg bike, if you’re so inclined.

The parts kit is quite reasonable for the money. The only item we took issue with was the aluminum Bontrager RL handlebar, which measures in at a scanty 690mm. While this handlebar would have been considered wide once upon a time, it’s much too narrow for modern taste; fitting a wider one, which you can always cut down would have made more sense.

The ride: fast, nimble and quiet

On the trail the Superfly SS is a nimble beast. The Bowie fork is as forgiving as one would expect two sticks of carbon to be, which is to say: if you wanted a forgiving ride, you’d be riding a suspension fork.

Rigid singlespeeding does have its merits. The Superfly SS tracks with precision and there’s no bobbing from the front end when it comes time to stand and mash up the climbs.

Singlespeeds need leverage, though, and the narrow bar left us lacking it when grunting up those steep climbs. Nor did it inspire much confidence when attempting to keep the front end tracking true through rock gardens. This tester would have preferred something in range of 750mm.

The sliders are the stand-out feature of the Superfly SS frame – and one you'll appreciate in use. Unlike many eccentric bottom brackets, which are prone to creaking and groaning under torque, Trek’s cleverly designed sliders proved quiet and easy enough to adjust.

Verdict: less is more – provided your body can take it

Despite misgivings about the stock handlebar, the Superfly SS is a good choice for riders looking to simplify their stable. And if you feel the SS will write checks that your quads just can’t cash, you may want to consider the Superfly 5. It retails for the same price and comes with a suspension fork and 2x10 drivetrain.

Reviewed: Trek Superfly 9.7 mountain bike

The superfly 9.7’s biggest selling point is its frame, and though the parts are modest, it has potential.

It’s easy to look at this bike and imagine an old Gary Fisher logo in place of Trek’s mark. I mean that as the highest compliment.

Quibble all you like about who invented the mountain bike. One thing’s certain: Gary Fisher played a huge role in popularizing 29” wheels, now the must-have size in nearly any off-road discipline.

His experience with his own brand, which is now rolled into Trek’s lineup, is apparent, giving this simple, middle-of-the-road hardtail an excellent personality.

Most mountain bikers need at least a couple hands to count the number of parts they break or replace any given season, but the frame is usually a constant. That is the Superfly 9.7’s biggest selling point, and though the parts are modest, it has real potential.

A fine frame

Trek doesn’t specify the particulars of their carbon construction, aside from claims that it’s thoroughly designed and tested to be used in an off-road frame.

Talk all you like about carbon, but the geometry is really what makes the Superfly sing. As soon as I hopped aboard the bike, its West coast heritage slapped me in the face like a wave off the Marin headlands.

In a few words, the 9.7 is long, low, slack, and fun. Having ridden some 29ers with 70-degree-plus head tube angles, our medium tester’s 69.3 degrees was comfortable and confident. For comparison, the Specialized Stumpjumper HT line has a 71.5-degree head angle. Trek also insists on a custom-offset fork to complete its G2 geometry.

The Superfly’s top tube length and reach are slightly longer than the Stumpjumper’s, and both lines have the same chainstay length — 435mm. It seems that the Trek gets most of its 1,160mm wheel base from the slacker head tube, making it 88mm longer than the Stumpjumper.

Interestingly, the Superfly’s bottom bracket drop is 5.5mm less than the Stumpjumper, meaning that the pedals sit slightly higher in the frame.

Aside from that detail, Trek’s bike is a longer, slacker machine than most ordinary cross-country race bikes.

Passable parts

To be charitable, the 9.7’s components are adequate. I’ve often found SRAM’s lower-end mountain bike shifting to be a bit clunky and slow to respond, and this pairing of X7 shifters and an X9 rear derailleur is no different. Trek does deserve credit for speccing a Type 2 rear derailleur with a clutch to eliminate nearly all chain noise.

The wheels are also humble — Bontrager rims and blue anodized hubs, which may not stand the test of time from a fashion standpoint. The cartridge bearing internals, however, are reassuring. The wheels are tubeless-ready, which is an essential upgrade, so it’s nice that the Trek is ready for it.

I’ll come right out and say that all 29er hardtails should have 100mm travel forks. Yes, the Fox Float 32 on the 9.7 was equipped with the Evolution damper, which is noticeably inferior to the higher-end FIT damping. But the extra cushion goes a long way to taming rough trail. The CTD lever was helpful to provide a firm ride on paved climbs, but I’d trade that for a damper that supports the middle of the travel any day. I’d lower the pressure to get top-end suppleness, only to be punished by excess brake dive and overly linear stroke.

Shimano SLX disc brakes are one of the finest aspects of this bike’s build. It’s remarkable how Shimano can deliver basic, affordable brakes like these, which are within striking distance of its XTR models.

Unfortunately, our Shimano HG62 cassette did not do as well. I destroyed it by somehow shifting the chain between the third and fourth largest cogs. It may have been a freak occurrence. It was certainly the first time for this unlucky tester.

Am I being too critical of the components? At $3,150, the Superfly 9.7 is certainly not targeted as an entry-level model. This is the type of bike a junior or collegiate racer would buy to enjoy for many years of pinning on plates. Surely they deserve a more reliable drivetrain and a capable fork.

The wheels are an easy upgrade that almost any racer expects to make. I did so myself with this test bike, improving the ride with some ENVE M50s. The faster acceleration and surefooted steering was an improvement. Those wheels also shaved a pound off the Superfly’s 25-pound stock weight. However, the most noticeable way to improve the bike’s feel is to convert the tires to tubeless, a much less expensive alternative to carbon wheels.

Another upgrade I made was a Stages power meter, which is becoming an essential training tool, even for mountain bike racers.

Taking it to the trail

Performance on paper doesn’t always equate to performance on dirt, and in some ways, the 9.7 makes that point.

I forgot about its hefty (for a hardtail) weight once it started snapping through corners and pumping fast rollers. As I’ve alluded to, the geometry gives this bike a great personality on the trail, letting you open things up on fast descents, keeping your body weight back just far enough on the steeps, and somehow avoiding any 29er sluggishness.

It’s rare to find a cross-country bike as playful as this, but the Superfly was happy to pop off jumps and whip around berms. Once terrain got rougher, things became a little less cheerful, especially with the fork’s shortcomings, but the bike loyally stayed on line. Perhaps that’s a testament to the carbon construction, as well as the 142x12mm rear thru-axle.

Once the fun ended and the work began, the Superfly was capable. It responded well as I hammered out of corners on steep climbs, rarely betraying its weight. I also enjoyed the fairly rangy top tube in the races I did. It encouraged me to stretch out a bit more, also helping to keep weight over the front wheel on steep pitches.

Is it super enough for you?

When it comes to high-speed riding and racing, the Superfly 9.7 is pretty hard to beat. You can overcome its components’ shortcomings with a few key upgrades, but you might be better off spending an extra $730 to get the 9.8 model.

However, if your riding and racing happens primarily in a place like New England where the corners, rock gardens, trees, and competition are all very tight, make sure to get a test ride on the Superfly. Its laid-back west coast personality is great in many settings, but it might not be sharp enough for every course.

I have a cruiser e-bike that was in bad need of some TLC. I walked in for an inspection to get it fixed later on, and they ended up fixing my brake squealing that day for really reasonable price. I felt really welcomed in the shop even though I don't think I fit in the biker demographic, everyone was so nice and patient. Andrew was awesome, highly recommend this shop if you need some bike maintenance!

Service was good. Came to get tires replaced. Andretti handled me and I was very happy. Charges for replacing tires on the bike were totally reasonable and he got it done super fast. Only thing souring the experience was the realization that I paid $70 for a road tire. Car tires cost that much. Not sure what these things cost online but I just didn't have the time to go that route

Long overdue post but this shop is great!! I went in with an issue with my pedal; it had fallen off. I was quoted at least $50 + parts at a shop further downtown so when they asked to keep it to give me a quote I said why not. They called me a couple days later and they said they were able to fix it for free and it was ready to be picked up. Such great and honest service! I will definitely be back

Our bike shop of choice in the TriValley - we've been loyal clients since the 2000s, when they were called Livermore Bicycle, and have purchased all our bikes here. We returned this weekend for some repairs and replacements that met our soon-to-be middle-schooler's bicycling needs: They installed: - a new bell (they removed the old "broken" one and replaced it with one that had a sound better suited to our tweens evolving tastes) - a new lock (after bolt cutting the old one that we could no longer unlock) - a new kickstand (which we had to go to their other location in Dublin for as they didn't have the right one in stock) - a bottle cage with strap adapter We also bought a small water bottle and a sea-foam green helmet that met her comfort and aesthetic wants and our requirements for safety. Thank you, Chris and team at Trek Livermore, for helping our family enjoy a few more years of safe biking.

Friendly, helpful, decent selection of bikes. Bought a bike that had to be shipped across the country. They packaged it up but didn't notify me of the measurements (so I could contact shipping company) until I called a couple days later to inquire. Turns out they forgot about it. Yikes. The bike shipped out a day early (yay!) but without the pedals. Had to go back to the store to pick up the pedals. A few hiccups overall, but resolution was quick.

I have in the past used this place to service my bike and they did a good job which is why I returned a year later to have them do a tune up on the same bike they had previously serviced. This time when I went though I did Not see the technicians that helped me before there were new people there and even though they knew they couldn't work on my bike they still took it in and held it 3 days and then I had to call them to check on it and at that time they told me that they couldn't service my bike. I was upset because 1 you could have just said that when I dropped it off, they had there tech look at the bike before checking me in to be sure they could service it and he said yes. Second why did you not reach out to me and let me know I had to call to find out that you were not going to service my bike. Third when I picked up my bike they were rude like oh it's over there get it out of here that's how I felt. I ended up taking my bike to a shop called Dublin Cyclerey. When I say that this place is by far a better bike shop I truly mean it. When I was at Dublin cycling when they checked me in they went over my bike with me from the front to the back tire with my concerns things that they saw that needed to be done this was not done at Trek Livermore they were like oh our technician will look at and he'll call you when he finds out what's wrong even though I had a problem that I wanted them to address specifically didn't matter like I said very rude, I wouldn't recommend anybody to go to trek Livermore however if you want quality service the guys over a Dublin Cyclery they do a great job they're very attentive they listened they didn't an outstanding job on my bike and I'll definitely be going back to there! Some info on the bike I was trying to get serviced at Trek Livermore 2018 Stromer ST2. They say they work on everything, well they use to not anymore.

Have had the pleasure of purchasing two bikes from Trek in the past twelve months. Their sales guys, in particular Andretti and Griff are knowledgeable, courteous and highly professional as well as passionate about their products. Big shout out to Sam Fox, who heads up their excellent service department. I would recommend that anybody who is looking to buy a bike, heads down to Trek Livermore and speaks to these guys. Thankyou guys.

Walked in with my kids to purchase apparel and we went unattended as employees sat on the sidelines... decided to leave and take our business to another store... was not a humbling experience

I am so lucky that I was near this shop when my bike tire needed patching and I was unable to get the wheel off. Not only did the sales guys solve that problem, they let me sit inside the shop to patch the tire, offering tools and plenty of moral support. A HUGE thank you to the amazing team here; you cannot go wrong at this location!!

Superfly 5 - 9 have the same frame and are priced according to components selection. My frame is Superfly 5 2014 size 18,5 virtual. I wanted this frame. Components, I upgraded practically everything. Great frame, fantastic geometry, handling could not be better. I had TREK Paragon 29" 2011 which is the same design as Superfly 2012 and 2013.

Interestingly, the Superfly's bottom bracket drop is 5.5mm less than the Stumpjumper, meaning that the pedals sit slightly higher in the frame. Aside from that detail, Trek's bike is a longer, slacker machine than most ordinary cross-country race bikes. Passable parts. To be charitable, the 9.7's components are adequate.
