This is a revision to the previous concept design I submitted before. The client wanted a more modern cruise ship, rather than the titanic-like. I provided various options of color and arrangement so the design is very flexible according to what the client needs.

Cruise ship logo with the title 'Fun logo concept for summer camp theme'

Fun logo concept for summer camp theme

The inspiration behind this logo comes from a previous summer where the theme was first introduced. This is a fresh approach in which I created the text from the ground up and gave it a light-hearted feel. The slime is indicative of the camp's many activities and I liked the idea of it being spattered on and kind of dripping down the word "Ooze". The word "CRUISE" is colored to give it a vacation and sea faring feel. The 3D drop shapes behind "CRUISE" and the accompanying outlines throughout are to help push the text out from the background.

This time, the concept is more focused on luxury. By combining the initials S + E in such a way that they make a design with a luxurious feeling, plus the curves made from this combination, a map image representing the destinations is created. while the circle that frames it represents harmony. I purposefully did not include cruise features or other modes of transportation because I believe we must convey brand value to clients through visuals rather than the products or services we offer. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks.

Wall Street Favorites: 3 Cruise Stocks with Strong Buy Ratings for May 2024

InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips

Cruising is back in a big way. But you don’t have to enjoy cruising to start looking for cruise stocks to buy. All you have to do is remember a few key statistics from the 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report published by the Cruise Lines Industry Association.

First, after years of struggling to reach 2019 levels, cruise travel in 2023 reached 107% with 31.7 million passengers. And the number of travelers was up in virtually every region. Global cruise capacity is expected to grow by at least 10% in the next five years.

Plus, the core cruise traveler is less than 40 years old, so there’s little danger of consumers getting aged out. 10% to 13% of Millennials and Gen-Z travelers are comfortable traveling alone, which fits other trends in our society.

And when you consider that cruising currently only accounts for about 2% of the travel and tourism sector, there’s plenty of room for growth. So before you finalize those vacation plans (possibly a cruise), you should look at these attractive cruise stocks.

Royal Caribbean (RCL)

Deck of a Royal Caribbean (RCL) cruise ship looking over the ocean

Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL ) came roaring back to pre-pandemic revenue level and, more importantly, profitability in 2023. Not surprisingly, RCL stock has been up more than 84% in the last 12 months, making it one of the top-performing stocks in its sector and the entire market. And since reporting earnings in late April, Royal Caribbean stock has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Also, in that earnings report, the cruise line raised its full-year guidance and reported refinancing $1.25 billion in debt . That should alleviate concerns about the company’s debt-to-equity ratio of 3.54.

Like many cruise lines, Royal Caribbean forecasts strong demand for the remainder of the year. And the company is successfully monetizing those passengers. In the last quarter, it reported a 14% increase in the adjusted gross margin per passenger per cruise day. Plus, 100% of this additional revenue flows to the company’s bottom line.

In addition to that positive news, RCL stock has an attractive valuation of just 12x forward earnings. With the company’s plans to launch four new cruise ships in the next two years, you can see why RCL stock belongs on your list of cruise stocks to buy.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH)

Norwegian Cruise Line ship arriving at a port. NCLH stock.

It took a while, but Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NCLH ) is finding some smooth sailing. In 2023, the company reported $8.55 billion in revenue , pushing the cruise line’s revenue above 2019. That revenue growth continued in the first quarter of 2024. Norway recorded $2.2 billion in revenue, which was 20% higher year-over-year.

On the earnings front, the news was even better as Norwegian turned a loss of 37 cents per share in the first quarter of 2023 into a 16-cent per share gain. That beat even the bullish expectations for 12 cents per share.

Moving forward. Norwegian expects gross capacity growth to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 6% through 2028. The company also increased its full-year guidance in key areas such as adjusted net income and EBITDA.

However, NCLH stock is down about 9% in the 30 days ending May 15, 2024. This seems to be a bit of an overreaction to the company’s revenue, which, although higher than the prior year, missed analysts’ estimates by 1.99%.

Viking Holdings (VIK)

MV Viking Star in North Sea Canal. Detail of funnel. VIK stock and VIK IPO

Viking Holdings (NYSE: VIK ) went public via an initial public offering ( IPO ) on May 1, 2024. The stock debuted at $26.45, now over $28 per share.

Some of that enthusiasm is due to the fact that the IPO market has been dry for the last few years. However, a bigger reason is that Viking Holdings is not a new company. And it’s a company with a history of being profitable as a private company.

The company offers a distinctly premium cruising experience targeted to affluent consumers with features such as no children on board and no on-board casinos. The company also cruises to niche destinations that these consumers will embrace.

There’s a lot to like about VIK stock. However, before you decide if Viking is one of your cruise stocks to buy, you’ll want to pay attention to the company’s first earnings report as a publicly traded company. That will occur on May 29, 2024. If the company delivers revenue and earnings, and more importantly, the forward guidance analysts expect, a $28 price target may be a floor and not a ceiling.

Logos with just text or simple letters can convey professionalism or luxury, whereas a Cruise logo with just an icon can be more jovial and exciting - maybe your logo should have both? This is a critical decision in the logo design process.

Ever considered why some companies use specific colors in the Cruise logo? Or why some businesses have certain colors in their branding? Color theory and psychology is the science of eliciting emotions and feelings via the use of color. Knowing what colors trigger different reactions from consumers can help a company create the perfect Cruise logo for their business. It definitely pays to choose the right colors for your Cruise logo. Want to be seen as a dependable, trustworthy brand or maybe you want to be sporty and active. Choosing the right colors for your logo is the key to getting the message right.

Shapes & Patterns

Just like colors, shapes can influence a person's emotions. The psychology of shapes has a key role in creating a great Cruise logo. We're not just talking about squares, circles and triangles here, but the geometric patterns that make up your Cruise logo. Sharp corners and straight lines are aligned with discipline and strength, whereas softer curves, ovals and ellipses can convey a sense of eternity, mystery or magic. There's more shapes to consider as part of your logo - natural shapes like leaves, complex shapes like spirals or even abstract patterns. Getting the balance right will help you get the perfect Cruise logo for your brand.

Cruise ship worker accused of stabbing 3 people with scissors on board vessel bound for Alaska

cruise ship company emblems

JUNEAU, Alaska — A cruise ship worker from South Africa was arrested Tuesday in Alaska’s capital city, accused of attacking a woman and two security guards with scissors on board the vessel, according to authorities.

The U.S. attorney’s office says the man is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction. Online court records do not show an attorney for the 35-year-old man.

According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, the man was recently hired by a cruise line and joined the ship, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday. The ship set off that day for a weeklong trip with scheduled stops in Alaska ports, including the capital of Juneau, and British Columbia.

The alleged incident happened west of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, as the ship was sailing to Alaska. According to the affidavit, during the “late evening” Sunday, ship personnel saw the man trying to deploy a lifeboat, and he was taken by security to a medical center for an evaluation.

While there, he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” and “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse, the affidavit states. He ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed a woman who was being examined, as well as two guards who tried to intervene before being subdued and held in a “shipboard jail,” the affidavit says. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The ship arrived in Juneau on Tuesday, when he was arrested by the FBI, the U.S. attorney’s office says.

Cunard added a 4th luxury cruise ship to its famous fleet — see what it'll be like on the new Queen Anne

  • Cunard  welcomed its fourth ship and newest in 14 years, the 2,996-guest Queen Anne.
  • The 114,000-ton vessel has amenities like an Indian restaurant and pool under a retractable glass roof.
  • Queen Anne's 2024 itineraries, primarily in Europe, start at $300 per person for a two-night cruise.

Insider Today

Cunard has operated 249 ships throughout its 184 years in operation, including the famous Queen Mary and Queen Mary 2. But it's been 14 years since the cruise line has launched a new vessel — until now.

Luxury cruisers , meet Queen Anne. It's Cunard's latest 2,996-guest ship, replete with 4,300 art pieces, archery, and the company's signature high-end flair. Its arrival was so highly anticipated that every cabin on its May 3 maiden voyage was fully reserved in minutes, the BBC reported.

The Carnival Corp. brand may be storied, but that doesn’t mean it’s past its prime.

cruise ship company emblems

Katie McAlister, president of Cunard, recently told the BBC that its bookings have grown 25% since the beginning of 2024 and are now the best they've been in a decade.

So it should come as no surprise that several of Queen Anne's 2024 itineraries are almost sold out.

Cunard isn’t in the business of building bigger.

cruise ship company emblems

Luxury cruise lines are beloved for their small-ship experience. Cunard is no different.

The new 114,000-ton cruise liner is the company's second-largest, although it can carry more guests than any of its other ships.

However, at a 2,996-guest and 1,225-crew capacity, Queen Anne is still tiny compared to the mass-market cruise industry's newest ships , the largest of which can carry 10,000 people.

Queen Anne's cabins are divided into four categories, listed from most to least luxurious: Queens Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia Club, and Britannia.

cruise ship company emblems

Despite being the cheapest option, the Britannia accommodations have high-end amenities like sparkling wine, Penhaligon toiletries, and tea and coffee machines.

That's nothing compared to the most luxurious Queens Grill suites, where guests get amenities like pillow menus, stocked mini-bars, a butler, fruit, and pre-dinner canapes.

Forget the sparkling wine — Queens Grill travelers get a bottle of Champagne.

Cabin categories are especially important for Cunard, not for reasons you might expect.

cruise ship company emblems

Besides how luxurious your hotel room at sea is, your cabin influences where you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Guests in the Princess Grill suites dine at the Princess Grill restaurant, while Britannia Club guests stick to the Britannia Club restaurant, and so on.

Guests in the higher-end Princess and Queens cabins also get a pretty sweet bonus: an exclusive lounge with infinity hot tubs.

Regardless of your cabin, the 14-deck ship has plenty of areas for all guests to relax under the sun.

cruise ship company emblems

For example, the Pavilion. It's one of Queen Anne's go-to places for an afternoon swim, nighttime movie viewing, silent disco, and not-so-silent live music, all under a retractable glass roof.

The ship's pool club also has plenty of lounge seats for a more traditional pool deck experience. For something indoors, head to the drawing and game rooms instead.

Like every new cruise ship, Queen Anne has a pickleball court.

cruise ship company emblems

But unlike every new cruise ship, it also has archery — coaches, bows, and arrows included.

Travelers looking for a less intense afternoon can instead try their hand at the putting green, shuffleboard, or quoits.

Not confident in your athletic abilities? Don't worry — there's a bar nearby, too.

If you lose your pickleball match, you can retail therapy your pain away at Queen Anne’s high-end stores.

cruise ship company emblems

Travelers have been splurging big on their cruise vacations . On Queen Anne (and with help from one of the ship's personal shoppers), this could include a Bremont watch or Chanel makeup.

Or, do as cruisers do: Eat and drink the pain away.

cruise ship company emblems

The ship has 15 eateries. Unfortunately, you'll have to pay extra for the Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, steakhouse grill, alfresco, and British restaurants.

Thankfully, the food hall-style buffet, room service, and cabin-assigned dining rooms are included in the fare.

cruise ship company emblems

Feeling peckish in the afternoon? Afternoon tea is held in the Queens Room, the same venue that hosts events like ballroom dancing and Cunard's signature black-tie galas.

Of course, a cruise wouldn’t be complete without a casino, spa, and nighttime shows.

cruise ship company emblems

Queen Anne is showing two new productions, including an adaptation of the classic British film "Brief Encounter."

For more casual entertainment, the ship also has a "show bar" helmed by a variety of musicians and entertainers.

For a more relaxing afternoon, try the spa's cryotherapy, "experience showers," and salt saunas.

cruise ship company emblems

Afterwards, to keep the wellness trend going, grab a healthy bite at the veggie and "sustainably sourced protein"-forward Wellness Cafe. Its kombucha bellinis are technically good for you, right?

Cunard is beloved for its regular transatlantic cruises on its Queen Mary 2 ocean liner.

cruise ship company emblems

In 2025, Queen Anne will embark on its first three-month around-the-world cruise. However, for the most part, it's not scheduled for repeat long-haul journeys .

Instead, in 2024, the ship will be homeported in Southampton, UK and travel on two- to 19-night itineraries across Europe.

The cheapest way to experience the new ship is a two-night summer cruise from Southampton to Hamburg, Germany, which currently starts at $300 per person.

cruise ship company emblems

But if money is no problem, the 18-night roundtrip Hamburg cruise during Christmas and the New Year might pique your interest — and your wallet. The itinerary's luxurious Queens Grill suites start at $19,350 per person.

P&O introduces new alcohol rules on ships which will have major impact on passengers

P&O introduces new alcohol rules on ships which will have major impact on passengers

'britain's favourite cruise line' has completely revised its alcohol allowance.

Rhiannon Ingle

Anyone planning on sailing off into the sunset on a cruise ship this summer has been warned about some pretty serious new rules.

Now, we already know all about the new all-inclusive drinking rules in Spain , but it seems travel company, P&O, has now followed suit after introducing new alcohol rules on ships, which will have a major impact on passengers.

So, you may want to brush up on the new requirement ahead of cramming your suitcase with a bunch of bottles .

Earlier this month (7 May), P&O, which is dubbed ' Britain's favourite cruise line', changed its alcohol policy.

For some context, cruisers used to be allowed to bring one litre of wine, champagne, beer, spirits or liqueur with them.

However, these updated restrictions have tightened the reigns as passengers are now no longer allowed beer or spirits on board.

You may want to think twice before packing your suitcase. (Maria Korneeva / Getty Images)

What is the new alcohol allowance?

According to the P&O website , the new change applies to all passengers aged 18 and over or 21 years in United States of America ports.

They will only be allowed to bring up to one litre of wine or Champagne on board when they embark the ship for the first time.

"Wine or Champagne over the one-litre limit will be stored and returned to the guest prior to the end of the cruise," the website continues.

"If this alcohol is consumed in the dining rooms, bars, restaurants or lounge areas, it will be subject to a corkage fee of £20* per bottle, per occasion, which will be charged to the guest’s on-board account."

Guests will only be allowed to bring up to one litre of wine or Champagne on board. (courtneyk / Getty Images)

How will the new alcohol allowance be carried out?

Alcohol which is considered as a restricted item, such as spirits, are completely prohibited from being brought on-board when passengers first embark the ship.

P&O notes: "Other alcohol types such as spirits are considered restricted items and guests are prohibited from bringing them on board when they first embark the ship."

"Any alcoholic beverages purchased mid-cruise in ports of call cannot be consumed on board. Guests will need to declare and hand over any alcohol bought in port at the gangway. It will be stored and returned to the guest prior to the end of the cruise, at no charge."

P&O outlined their policy on 'responsible drinking'. (courtneyk / Getty Images)

Why the change?

P&O explained that they reviewed the alcohol policy and 'decided to align' with the cruise industry to adhere to Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HESS) guidelines around our responsibility to serve alcohol.

The travel company also shared a statement about 'responsible drinking', which reads: "We believe responsible drinking is a valued and enjoyable part of a cruise. However, we ask our policy for the responsible consumption of alcohol is adhered to at all times.

"We reserve the right to deny access to the ship to anyone who appears to be heavily under the influence of alcohol. We may also confiscate alcohol in the terminal and at the gangway."

A P&O Cruises spokesperson added: "We regularly review our policies in line with the cruise industry and we are making the change to adhere more closely to our health, environment, safety and security guidelines around our responsibility to serve alcohol."

Holland America Line Becomes First Global Cruise Line to Receive International Seafood Certifications

Premium cruise line expands Global Fresh Fish Program with Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications for sustainable and responsible seafood

Seattle, Wash., April 8, 2024  — Holland America Line is elevating its award-winning dining experience by becoming the first global cruise line to receive both Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications. The two organizations serve as the most credible standards worldwide for certified seafood.

The distinguished take Holland America Line’s Global Fresh Fish Program to the next level, underscoring the brand’s commitment to serving guests the highest-quality seafood that is sourced sustainably when wild-caught and raised responsibly when farmed according to the strictest global standards.

“Our guests care about the quality and sustainability of the fresh fish we serve, and so do we,” said Gus Antorcha, president, Holland America Line. “These certifications build on our commitment regionally inspired fresh seafood dishes from port to plate in 48 hours. We’re proud to partner with two organizations that share our dedication to protecting the vitality of the oceans we sail.”

Marine Stewardship Council | Aquaculture Stewardship Council

Marine Stewardship Council’s focus is on sustainable wild-caught seafood, while Aquaculture Stewardship Council works with responsibly farmed seafood, with both organizations seeking to minimize environmental impacts. Aligning with both ecolabels signifies Holland America Line’s commitment to programs that recognize and reward sustainable fishing practices, protect the ocean environment, and transform the seafood market toward greater sustainability.

“As the first global cruise line to successfully complete the Marine Stewardship Council’s rigorous Chain of Custody audit, Holland America Line is extending our important work around sustainable, ocean-friendly fishing to a new category,” said Erika Feller, Americas Director, Marine Stewardship Council.

“Consumer interest in sustainable fish options is growing and, by achieving this commitment, Holland America Line is helping to support our goal of ensuring seafood supplies for future generations,” said Chris Ninnes, CEO, Aquaculture Stewardship Council .

Onboard Dining and Guest Experience

All 11 ships in the fleet are Chain of Custody certified to serve Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certified and labeled seafood, with the full rollout starting across five Holland America Line ships in May 2024 at the beginning of Europe and Canada/New England season.

They include Volendam in the Canada/New England region, and Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Zuiderdam and Oosterdam in Europe. Holland America Line’s six ships in Alaska serve 100% sustainable seafood under its Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification.

Guests will be able to enjoy a variety of Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certified seafood dishes in Holland America Line’s Main Dining Room, as well as in Lido Market and onboard specialty restaurants. from nine regions worldwide will be incorporated into Holland America Line seafood offerings: Asia, Australia, Canada/New England, Mexico, Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.

Onboard menus will indicate the type of certification with a symbol marked next to the dish using the Marine Stewardship Council blue fish, Aquaculture Stewardship Council sea green, and Responsible Fisheries Management logos. While not all seafood species aboard Holland America Line are currently certified, the cruise line is working toward 100% accreditation of species that are eligible to meet the organizations’ standards.

Examples of seafood that will fall under the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification umbrella on Holland America Line cruises include: Asian Barramundi, Tasmania Atlantic Salmon, Canadian and New England Haddock, Hawaiian Swordfish, Mediterranean Sardine, Mexican Tuna, Northern European Dover Sole, and South American Chilean Seabass, to name a few.

Global Fresh Fish Program

The new certifications are the latest achievements for Holland America Line’s Global Fresh Fish Program. The pioneering initiative engages a global network of 60 ports to source and serve 80 types of fresh fish — from port to plate in less than 48 hours — in all restaurants on board. Guests can find fresh fish and ingredients native to various regions where the ships sail, yielding destination-inspired menus and local specialties that tell the story of each itinerary through cuisine.

Additionally, the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certifications fall on the heels of Holland America Line becoming the first cruise line to serve 100% fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood on board its six ships in Alaska through its Responsible Fisheries Management certification.

Barge Strikes Bridge in Galveston, Causing Oil Spill

No injuries were reported when the barge struck a bridge that connects Galveston, Texas, to a small island along the Gulf of Mexico, causing a partial collapse.

Video player loading

By Remy Tumin

A barge struck a causeway connecting Galveston, Texas, to a small island on Wednesday morning, sending debris and oil into the bay, officials said.

The Pelican Island Bridge was hit around 10 a.m., the city of Galveston said in a statement , and the causeway was closed to car traffic until further notice, shutting off the only road to the island. There were no reported injuries. The bridge connects the north side of Galveston Island with the south side of Pelican Island, which is home to a Texas A&M University campus and two museums.

The barge has a capacity of 30,000 gallons, but it was not clear how much oil had spilled into Galveston Bay, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management said on social media .

Vessel traffic in the channel was temporarily halted, county officials said, and the structural damage to the bridge was being assessed by the Texas Transportation Department. The cause of the accident was not immediately known. Power was temporarily interrupted on Pelican Island but had been restored by Wednesday afternoon.

Richard Freed, vice president of the marine division of Martin Midstream Partners, said the barge is owned and was being operated by one of its subsidiaries, Martin Operating Partnership. The accident occurred, he said, when the barge broke loose from its tow and “drifted” into the bridge.

The spill, which he described as “limited,” had been contained by Wednesday afternoon, he said.

“We have personnel on site assessing the damage,” Mr. Freed said in an emailed statement. “The company has already engaged a salvage company to assist with the removal of the barge from the bridge area.”

The accident occurred on the same day that a senior U.S. Coast Guard official told a congressional committee that states and other bridge operators should be evaluating the types of vessels traveling near bridges, particularly older ones.

The official, Vice Adm. Peter Gautier, was testifying before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, which is examining the federal response to the cargo ship crash on March 26 that knocked down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, killing six people and deepening anxieties about the state of the country’s infrastructure.

The city of Galveston said in its statement that emergency management officials from the city, state and university responded to the crash on Wednesday, adding that the U.S. Coast Guard was assessing the extent of the spill and would “initiate the containment and cleanup processes.”

Texas A&M University at Galveston said on social media that power had been restored to the campus, which is home to the school’s marine and maritime program.

Aerial footage from KHOU-TV , a CBS affiliate, showed a collapsed portion of what appeared to be an abandoned railroad bridge that ran alongside the causeway. A large chunk of concrete and metal lay across the bow of the barge as a long vein of oil leaked from it into Galveston Bay. Emergency responders gathered on the road surface, and live footage showed pickup trucks arriving on the bridge.

The Pelican Island bridge is just west of the Port of Galveston, a deepwater shipping channel that is among the busiest cruise ports in North America. More than 900 cruise and cargo ships and other vessels pass through the port every year, according to its website .

The bridge to Pelican Island was built in 1959 and carries an average of about 9,100 cars a day, most of which are heading to and from the campus, according to The Houston Chronicle . Most of the island is undeveloped, with only a single major road running across it.

In March, The Galveston County Daily News reported that the Port of Houston Authority had approved an agreement with Galveston County to provide land for a new $100 million vehicular bridge and $300 million for a rail bridge to the island.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.
