Bus routes operate on a set schedule at designated stops, providing extensive coverage throughout the cities within Brevard County as well as unincorporated areas.

• The safety of our passengers is our #1 priority.
• Please limit packages to those you can personally carry on the bus by yourself.
• Be at the stop at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled arrival time.
• Do not approach a moving bus.
• Have exact fare, ticket or pass ready prior to boarding the bus. Drivers cannot make change.
• Leave seats near the front for elderly or disabled riders, moving promptly to the next available seat.
• Passengers may only use audio devices with head phones activated.
• Eating, drinking, smoking, electronic cigarettes, or any materials that are flammable are not allowed on buses.
• Service animals are the only animals allowed.
• If available, use the stop bar or pull cord to signal your top one block in advance. If one is not available, alert your driver at least one block in advance.
• Do not leave your seat until the bus is fully stopped.
• All buses are equipped with bike racks. Surfboards and bikes are permitted inside the bus when space is available.
• Proper attire is needed to board. Shirts and shoes are required. Bathing suits, except board shorts, must be covered.
• All scheduled times are approximate and depend on traffic and other conditions.

FHP: Man charged with DUI manslaughter after 8 killed, dozens injured in Central Florida migrant bus crash

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Calling it a "massive traffic homicide investigation," the Florida Highway Patrol said eight people died and at least 40 people were injured in a migrant bus crash in Marion County early Tuesday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 2010 International Bus was traveling west on State Road 40 when it collided with an eastbound 2001 Ford Ranger Truck around 6:30 a.m., approximately 500 feet west of SW 148 Court.

The driver of the truck, identified by FHP as Bryan Maclean Howard, was arrested and charged on eight counts of DUI manslaughter.

The bus was transporting 53 migrant workers to a nearby farm, officials said. FHP is still working to determine what caused the collision, which sent the bus off the roadway and through a fence, before it overturned into what residents say is a horse farm pasture. 

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, FHP officials said the investigation into the crash will be lengthy. They also said more migrant workers are in Marion County this time of year, due to the size of its agricultural industry. 

Calling them "hardworking individuals," Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said he believes everyone on the bus was in the county legally.

Woods said more than 30 ambulances, plus a Marion County School bus, were used to take victims to area hospitals.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital is treating seven patients in critical condition and two that are said to be "stable." One other person is being treated at HCA Florida West Marion Hospital.

AdventHealth Ocala was treating over a dozen patients, all of which have been discharged or transferred.

During Tuesday's news conference, officials noted that they are still working to notify victims' next of kin. Woods said his heart goes out to the families of the victims. 

"This is the death you do not expect," he said. "I pray that the good Lord gives them whatever peace that He can to get them through this."

State Road 40 between U.S. 41 and West County Road 328 between Ocala and Dunnellon has reopened as of late Tuesday.

NEW: Other driver charged with DUI-manslaughter in crash that killed eight farmworkers

A bus carrying farmworkers to a job site crashed and overturned Tuesday morning off State Road 40 West in west Marion County. Eight people died and eight more were critically injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and Marion County Fire Rescue. SR 40 West was closed between U.S. 41 and County Road 328 as first responders and investigators continued their work at the scene. The workers were heading to Cannon Farms in Dunnellon when the crash happened, officials said.

Arrested driver has a traffic record

According to records on file with the Marion County court clerk, Bryan Maclean Howard was cited for numerous traffic-related offenses from 2004 to 2019, including failure to wear seatbelt, driving on a suspended or expired driver's license, failure to stop at a red light, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

In the latter case, according to court records, Howard was driving in northeast Ocala and struck a utility pole, splitting it in half. He later told an Ocala police officer he left the scene because he did not have auto insurance, according to an arrest affidavit.

Howard also has been convicted of possessing drug paraphernalia and grand theft.

Update: Other driver in the crash has been arrested

In a news bulletin emailed just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, FHP announced that the other driver involved in the crash has been arrested and held on eight counts of DUI-manslaughter.

The driver was identified as Bryan Maclean Howard, 40, of Ocala. He was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup. Additional details about the arrest were not provided. He was arrested at a local hospital, where he had been taken for treatment.

In the statement, the FHP said only that it will "conduct both a thorough and exhaustive traffic crash and criminal investigation."

Advocacy group: Deaths were 'very tragic and needless'

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which describes itself as the nation's largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights volunteer-based organization, issued a statement on Tuesday expressing "profound sorrow" and calling the deaths "very tragic and needless."

"They are the ones who put the food on our tables and nourish the state and our country," said Asia Clermont, Florida LULAC state director, in the statement. "It is too easy to dismiss this as just another accident. Florida must take every possible step to protect its essential workers, who are human beings and the backbone of the state's economy. We ask all Americans to join us in prayer and support for the recovery of the injured and help for the loved ones of those we've lost."

The group said that the bus passengers "were farmworkers en route to a farm in the area, underscoring the critical role these individuals play in sustaining the agricultural sector and feeding our communities."

It further noted that "officials have confirmed that the workers had the necessary documentation to be employed in Florida."

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who have been killed," Clermont says in the statement. "I know what it feels like to experience such a loss, especially when far away from home. As immigrants, we can feel even more vulnerable in times of crisis.

"Florida LULAC wants the affected families to know that we're standing behind our fellow workers and are here to support them in any way we can. They definitely need our assistance, whatever that might be. Also, we will be more than happy to cooperate with the various agencies working on finding out what happened and providing aid to the victims," she adds.

The group said that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is "actively monitoring the situation."

Updates on the patients at local hospitals

As of 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, AdventHealth Ocala had transferred two of its 16 crash patients to other facilities. "The remaining 14 patients in our care are in the process of being discharged from the hospital," a spokesperson said.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital listed seven crash victims in critical condition and two in stable condition. Its sister facility, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, had one patient in stable condition.

Praise for the cooperation on scene

Marion County Fire Rescue Chief James Banta praised the interagency cooperation. He said 35 units from his agency alone responded, working the scene with FHP and other agencies.

“I also want to thank our partners at the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Emergency Management, HCA Ocala, AdventHealth Ocala, and the Marion County Public School system for their invaluable assistance in transporting 45 patients to local hospitals. Their coordinated efforts were crucial in managing this crisis,” Banta said in a Marion County Fire Rescue Facebook post.

'We're heartbroken'

Julie Taylor, executive director of the National Farm Worker Ministry , was contacted by the Star Banner.

"We're heartbroken," she said.

The organization was formed in 1971 and fights for better working and living conditions for farmworkers.

She said when farmworkers are killed or injured in these kinds of situations, her organization worries about several things. For example, many farmworkers don't have health insurance. Also, her agency worries about the families: When the injured people don't work, the families often are left without income. How will the families cope?

Concerned about the first responders

The Professional Firefighters of Marion County and the International Association of Fire Fighters have reached out to the crew members who responded to the scene, offering assistance during this difficult time.

A comment from Cannon Farms in Dunnellon

On its Facebook page, Cannon Farms announced that it will be closed Tuesday out of respect for the crash victims.

The post said the company involved was Olvera Trucking Harvesting Corp.

Other fatal crashes in Marion County

Eight is the highest number of fatalities in one Marion County vehicle crash in recent memory. Here's a look at some other recent crashes with multiple fatalities.

Speaking late Tuesday morning during a press conference at the crash scene, Sheriff Billy Woods said: "My heart goes out to them," in reference to the victims and their families.

Woods said his agency is assisting investigators, especially with Spanish language translation. Officials are trying to notify the victims' families.

The sheriff said the people on the bus are hard working individuals and the crash was a tragedy.

Pickup truck driver is in serious condition

The driver of the other vehicle involved in Tuesday morning's crash is hospitalized in serious condition, FHP reported late Tuesday morning.

FHP: The number of fatalities could increase

Speaking late Tuesday morning during a press conference at the crash scene, an FHP official said it's possible the number of deaths could increase, given the conditions of the critically injured bus occupants.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened about 6:35 a.m. Tuesday and the location was SR 40 approximately 500 feet west of Southwest 148th Court.

FHP also reports that the bus is a 2010 International bus and the other vehicle involved is a 2001 Ford Ranger.

Laborers were heading to a watermelon farm in west Marion County

Officials on scene said the farmworkers worked for a private company and were being taken to a watermelon farm. There is no name on the side of the bus, and the owner of the private company was aboard the vehicle and had to be transported to a hospital after the crash. No additional details were available as of 9:05 a.m.

There were 53 people aboard the bus, officials said. Eight died, eight more were critically injured and the rest had minor or no injuries, but still were taken to local hospitals for evaluation.

Updated information on State Road 40 West closure

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced that State Road 40 West is temporarily closed between U.S. 41 and County Road 328.

The bus involved in the crash was not affiliated with the school district. The vehicle is owned by a private company and was transporting farmworkers. The school district did provide a school bus to help transport victims.

Update: FHP confirms 8 people have died in the bus crash

The Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed that eight people were killed in the crash and eight more were critically injured. The injured were taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. Ten people were seriously injured. At least 25 occupants suffered minor injuries.

Here's how the bus crash happened

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bus was heading west on SR 40 and a brown Ford Ranger was eastbound on the same road. A witness told troopers that for some reason the Ranger moved into the westbound lane and the vehicles sideswiped.

The bus ran onto the south shoulder, struck a board fence and two trees, then overturned, troopers said.

LTD bus routes in Eugene to see reductions as bus driver shortage worsens

Citing a lack of bus drivers, the Lane Transit District announced this week a reduction in service scheduled to go into effect on Monday.

"The reason for the service adjustment is simple: LTD needs more bus operators," LTD Chief Marketing Officer Pat Walsh said in a written announcement. Walsh said LTD is "in the midst of a massive recruitment and retention effort" and hopes to bring back service later. The new timetables are scheduled to last until June 15.

Walsh told the Register-Guard LTD currently employs 170 bus operators, but had 215 before the pandemic, and the district is hiring for 100 more because of expected retirements and for flexibility around leave.

"We are in a continuous hiring mode," for not only drivers but also mechanics and public safety officers, he said.

No routes were removed under the new schedule, but several will now feature less frequent trips. The largest reductions include to the EmX and to routes serving Springfield, Bethel and north Eugene. LTD also included some non-reduction alterations to times and routes.

Removal of the midday Franklin corridor trips. Under the old schedule, EmX busses would make additional trips along the portion of the route between the Eugene and Springfield stations so that for parts of the afternoon the wait time between buses was 7.5 minutes. Now those Franklin corridor trips are removed and the EmX runs every 15 minutes during weekday afternoons.

Route 11 - Thurston

Removal of the 6:40 p.m., 7:40 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. trips and adjusted time points so that on weekdays the bus now runs every half hour instead of every 20 minutes from 6 to 8 p.m., and every hour instead of every half hour after 9:30 p.m.

Route 12 - Gateway

Removal of the 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekday trips.

Route 17 - 5th Street/Hayden Bridge

Removal of the 6 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. trips, and adjusted other trips to be more evenly spaced out.

Route 18 - Mohawk

Removal of the 10 p.m. trip, the last one of the day.

Route 24 - Donald

Removal of the 6 p.m. trip and the routing where three morning trips were previously extended to 8th and Olive.

Route 28 - Hilyard

No reduction in service, but the route now turns onto 14th Avenue instead of 15th Avenue as it leaves UO station.

Route 36 - W 18th

Removal of the 2:45 p.m. weekday trip.

Route 40 - W Echo Hollow

Removal of the 4:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. weekday trips.

Route 41 - Barger/Commerce

Removal of the 4:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. weekday trips.

Route 55 - North Park

An adjustment to the afternoon trip of the twice-daily route. It now leaves Eugene Station at 3:20 instead of 3:15.

Route 66 - VRC/Coburg

Removal of the 3:20 p.m. and 5:20 p.m. weekday trips, and moved up the following trips so that a bus now runs every half hour instead of every 20 minutes during those times.

Route 67 - Coburg/VRC

Removal of the 10 a.m. and 5:20 p.m. trips, and moved the 5:40 p.m. trip forward 10 minutes to begin at 5:30 instead .

Fare categories, types of passes, and how to purchase.

• There are three fare categories: Bus/Trolley Fares, TD Paratransit and ADA Paratransit Fares. Each category has a different type of fare, based on eligibility.
• When paying a 1-Ride Fare at boarding, exact change is required as the driver is not equipped to make change.  A 1-Ride Pass can only be purchased in advance with  Token Transit . 
• Fare specials include 10-Ride and 30 Day Passes. Both must be purchased in advance and are non-transferable.

Advance Fare Purchase Options

Mobile Ticketing: A mobile ticketing system powered by  Token Transit  sends a pass directly and instantly to a smartphone. Payment with a credit, debit or prepaid debit card is required. Send A Pass  to friends, relatives, or employees.  

Online Purchase with Mail Delivery : Purchase a pass Online with a Visa or MasterCard and receive it by mail within 5 business days. Login to an existing account, or Set Up An Account .  

Phone Purchase with Mail Delivery: Purchase a pass by phone with Visa, MasterCard or Discover and receive it by mail within 5 business days, call 321-635-7815 , option 2, or  321-952-4563 , option 1.

Transit Terminal or Library Purchase:   Purchase a pass at either transit terminal with Visa, MasterCard or Discover; cash or money order; or check up to $100.00. Space Coast Area Transit terminals are located at: 401 S. Varr Ave., Cocoa, Florida, 32922 and 460 S. Harbor City Blvd., Melbourne, Florida, 32901. Purchase a pass at select  Brevard County Libraries with Visa, MasterCard or cash.  

Mail Purchase and Delivery : Purchase a pass By Mail . with Visa, MasterCard or Discover; cash or money order; or checks up to $100.00.  

Eligibility For Reduced Fare

Reduced Fare Passes must be verified for eligibility prior to being issued. All passes are non-transferable.

Reduced Bus Fare

Prior to purchasing a Reduced Fare Bus Pass, a Reduced Fare ID Card is required. Eligible passengers without an ID card should  Apply Now .   An email confirming eligibility will occur within 5 business days. Those eligible for Reduced Bus Fare include active or inactive military, seniors 60+, students, TD Paratransit and ADA Paratransit. Medicare cards are accepted as proof for reduced fare. There is no charge for children under the age of five (5), or for transfers.  Eastern Florida State College Students Ride For Free  with a valid EFSC Student ID. Due to a grant from the City of Melbourne, no fare is charged on routes 21, 24, and 29 to Melbourne residents with valid ID who ride within the Melbourne city limits.

TD Paratransit Fare

TD Paratransit qualified passengers ride at a reduced fare. Individuals must go through the TD Paratransit   registration process and become eligible to receive TD Paratransit   service .
