Wine Tasting in Ericeira: The Best wineries and Tours 2024

Are you looking for wine tasting in ericeira i’ve got just the ticket.

Ericeira is an incredible place to visit if you’re into renting a surfboard going down to one of the many beaches and riding the waves. But it’s also an incredible place to enjoy Portuguese gastronomy and its restaurants .

I lived in Ericeira for many year and alway loved the interesting places to eat , as well as unique wine-tasting experiences. My favorite was visiting the wineries in September while they were collecting the grapes. Always so much fun, especially at Quinta da Santana or Ramilo Wines!

Look no further than the independent regional wine producers scattered throughout the area to get a taste of what there is on offer along the Portuguese coast. From small, family-owned businesses to some of the larger, best wineries in Portugal, I always appreciated how there’s something to suit everyone’s taste and budget.

But if you’d rather let someone else do all the hard work, there are also organized wine tours that visit several different wineries in one day. You can even do it as a bike tour! Here are some of the best ones to check out.

In case you don’t have time to read it all, here is our top recommendation for the best wine tasting in Ericeira.

The Best Wine Tasting Experience -🍇 Quinta da Santana – Visit the family run property and go back in time as you wander through the vineyards and take in the majestic beauty of a traditional Portuguese winery. Truly top notch although its not always available.

The Best Organised Tours – 🚲🍷 Winetasting Bike Tour – Have fun seeing the sights from a bike and finish off the experience with a wine tasting experience at one of the local wineries.

Wine Tasting Ericeira: Independent Wine Producers

There are several excellent independent wine producers all within a 20 minute drive from Ericeira. I actually took a few days to visit them all a few weeks ago and had a very pleasant time! Generally, wine tastings take about 1 hour, but can take up to 2 hours if a vineyard visit is included. Read on for more information.

Quinta da Santana beautiful grounds.

Quinta de Santana

This vineyard is located about a 20 minute drive inland from Ericeira. It offers one of the most authentic experiences since it is a traditional family vineyard bought by a large family of 8 many years ago.

The wine-producing segment has been kept up by James, the owner, and now his wife and her team orchestrate fabulous weddings held among the vines each summer.

Wine tastings here allow you a glimpse of times past in the small regional villages of this part of Portugal. The guided visit takes you through the vines where you’ll probably meet the heard of sheep grazing under the orange trees. Next, you will be taken to the winery and shown the process the grapes go through.

Quinta de Santana offers different types of tastings, differing by number and type of wine, whether food is included or not and how exclusive, or private your tour is. Prices range from 25 to 150 Euros. Click here to view the Quinta de Santana wine tasting menu. Bookings should be made online, and the date confirmed after purchase. Tastings take place at 11:00 am or 3 pm, depending on availability.

Barrels in the Mazwine cellar.

This winery is a newer addition to the region. Bought by a Brazilian about 20 years ago, several dilapidated and abandoned buildings with vines on the land were rehabilitated, and renovated to create the structure we can visit today.

A modern application of existing techniques created some prize-winning wines and some surprisingly delicious variations on old-world grapes which were thought to have disappeared.

A visit will take you through the wine museum, show you the winery and its modern installations, and then to watch a video about the history of the region and the buildings which were rehabilitated to make this project possible.

Here wine tastings go from 20 to 40 Euros, depending on how many wines are included in the visit and whether finger food is included in the experience. Bookings can be made online.

Owners of Ramilo wines, brothers Nuno and Pedro sitting in the vineyard.

Ramilo Wines

If you’re looking for a wine-tasting experience with a personal touch, Ramilo is the place to go. This family-owned business has been passed down through the generations, and today they still grow their own grapes in the beautiful hills around Ericeira as well as further south near Sintra .

When I stopped here for a visit I was warmly received by Joao, the chief winemaker, who was driving a grape-laden tractor in from the fields. We sat at the beautiful stone slab table where wine tastings take place, and enjoyed the view of the vineyard while we chatted.

Wine tastings here are done from Monday to Friday at 2 pm, include 4 different wines and cost 30 Euros per person. If you want to add on some regional tapas dishes, that will set you back an extra 10 Euros per head. Make sure to reserve ahead of time by emailing or calling since they are not always at the shop.

Glass or red wine and the horizon.

Adega Mae is a much larger wine producer slightly north of Ericeira in Torres Vedras, about a 30 minutes drive from Ericeira. It has very modern installations and incredible architecture which works to highlight the beautiful views of the rolling hills covered in rows of grape vines.

Here you can do a wine tasting, or have brunch with wine pairing. For larger groups, lunch or dinner are available as well. Wine tastings start at 15 Euros and up and bookings can be made online.

You can also try being a winemaker for a day, where you get to create your own wine and go through the entire wine-making process. It’s a great way to learn more about wine and get creative. The wine-tasting experience is an unforgettable one, as you will be able to taste the wine straight from the barrels, learning more about wine in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Haja Cortezia Wines

If you’re looking for a wine-tasting experience in Ericeira that will transport you to the heart of Portugal, look no further than Haja Cortezia Wines. This small family business close to Sao Juliao beach offers wine tastings in their wine cellar, as well as vineyard tours.

Counter where wine tasting tours start at Haja Cortesia Wines.

They also serve exquisite dinners with wine pairings, making it the perfect spot for an immersive wine-centric experience. With a minimum of 4 people, wine tastings can include 3 or 4 wines. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience some of the excellent local wine and a vineyard tour at one of Ericeira’s newest wine producers.

This tour gives you a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Portuguese culture while sampling some of the finest wine that Portugal has to offer. • S2310PNphilh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best all round mountain bike guides in Ericeira Booked 2 rides out with Bruno and Marco at Ericeira Bike, Wine Tasting and Sintra. Wine tasting ride was great for all levels as some of our friends hadn't ridden a mountain bike for a while. All abilities are catered for. Great route seeing plenty of countryside running alongside the river. Great hosting by the vineyard owners giving us a great tour and a 6 bottle wine tasting experience. Hardtail bikes were in great condition.Sintra was an entirely different and more challenging ride. Up in the cooler microclimate of Sintra the routes are single track routes through the woods. Bruno was great at slowly ramping up the difficulty level as he assessed our capabilities. We all managed the "black" route as our last run of the day which is a testament to his skill of knowing the routes and explaining where the tricky obstacles would occur and coaching the best technical routes through them. Can't recommend this company enough. Read more Written 29 August 2022

My wife and I did the Palace to the Sea tour in mid-June 2022 and no word of a lie, it was the best afternoon of our holiday in Ericeira. The booking was easy. The transfer to and from our hotel was slick and Bruno and Marco (the two guys that run the business) were the nicest people we met in our entire time in Portugal....a hefty compliment given the friemdliness of the Portuguese in general. Throw in the challenging but fun ride (our particular tour was largely downhill, too) with a couple of beers during and afterwards and you really are in paradise. I can thoroughly recommend this company and their product as the best value for money to be had in your stay in Ericeira Read more Written 28 June 2022

Marco and Bruno were super helpful and tailored the trip to our abilities and fitness levels. Stunning scenery and lots of super fun flowing single tracks - good for intermediate skills, and definitely “red” by UK standards, with some blue bits. The bikes were fantastic quality, high spec and even provided with UK brakes and pneumatic seat adjustment. Loved it, we’ll come back for more! Read more Written 29 April 2022

Firstly Bruno and team were very flexible with dates/late booking which was much appreciated with the uncertainty of Covid rules. We met at an easy to find location which was sent to me ahead of time. We really wanted to see as much of Sintra's trails as we could- this was exactly what Marcelo and Bruno did. There was relaxed discussions about where we'd like to ride making sure we were getting what we wanted but still within our skill levels. The trails were incredible!!! The guys also made sure they stopped at some amazing lookouts and gave us information on the area (like it being a UNESCO heritage site!). My partner is faster than I am despite us still wanting to ride the same trails- Bruno and Marcelo planned this perfectly and made sure I had a line to follow if needed and my Partner could follow Marcelo at the front. We had an amazing picnic in amongst the rocks and forest and finished with a trail ending up at the beach with beers provided by Ericeira Bike- Perfect! We both said this was the best day of biking we'd ever had- the company, trails, location and food made it the perfect day. We'll be back for sure! Read more Written 17 August 2021

He stopped in a number of locations to show us unique things in the park in addition to pointing out sights for us. He was also able to cater the ride to our abilities. I am a novice so he picked a track that was comfortable for me but took my husband on more challenging trails to allow for him to do more mountain biking. After the ride, he took us to a number of look outs and fed us a delicious lunch of local favorites and friend fruit, vegetables, breads, and cheeses. It was a wonderful experience. Additionally the bikes we're in fantastic shape, along with helmets. We were given water bottles as a gift. Learn about Wine - in my Wine-Blog

If you’re interested in Portuguese wine, or wine in general, check out my blog too. I write about grapes, producers, winemaking. Knowledge helps to understand. That is, the next time you taste a wine that you have already read something about, or where you know the grapes, it helps you to understand the wine better.

Are you interested in a specific topic? Then I am always open to suggestions for new blog posts. Contact me and I’ll see what I can write about it.  For me, the knowledge of production is important to be able to understand a wine. I hope to inspire you with my content and to arouse your curiosity to try different, even new, wines.

We took the Sentra tour with Marco and it was wonderful. Marco picked us up at our rental and drove us to Sentra for our ride. And Marco was aware of safety and made sure that there were not any mishaps during the tour. We highly recommend this and would love to have another tour in the future. Thank you for all the fun!

Our fourth day out with Rui- this time he took us South toward Evora, stopping first in the picturesque village of Arraiolos where tapestry rugs have been crafted since the 16th century. A wander through the village and tapestry studios made us feel as though we had stepped back in time. A feeling that remained as we visited Evora with its remarkable Roman remains. But our travel through time continued even further back as, in the late afternoon we arrived at the Almendes Cromlech - a megalithic double stone circle, the finest in Portugal and reportedly one of the oldest in Europe. Because it’s off the beaten track, down a rutted and difficult to navigate lane passing through groves of cork trees, the site doesn’t receive many visitors. We had it all but to ourselves as the sun began to set, casting sunbeams and shadows all around. Truly magical! As always, Rui recommended a great little restaurant for lunch in Evora and conveyed us safely home to Galamares at the end of the day..

3. Lunch at a family owned vineyard - Gastronomy & Heritage

Note: On Tuesdays, we'll visit Queluz Royal Palace instead. Afterward, we’ll visit the fishing village of Ericeira, where we'll show you the local fishing spot and market in order to buy us a fresh fish for lunch. We know you might be hungry but don't worry! We will provide you with some local delicacies. After this visit, we will head towards an old family-owned vineyard where we will go on a wine tour... The culmination of the day will take place shortly at the same place, lunch with a fresh fish grilled to perfection (meat and vegetarian options available)… Lunch will take place on the outside and facing the vineyards!

We really had an amazing time, from Cascais to Sintra, going through landmarks such as Cabo do Roca (most western point of Continental Europe) to the Peña Palace, discovering wonderful sights and with the lead of our Guide exploring secret areas, with less tourist and more natural experiences. It was a pleasure to discover the region with a local, which has a passion for the place he grew up in. I would recommend it over and over. Particular thanks to Ruben.

Sober Travelers Find Something to Savor in Wine Country

Mocktail trails, olive oil tours and elevated dining experiences are among the many ways the renowned wine-producing areas of Sonoma, Mendoza and Tuscany are appealing to sober or sober-curious travelers.

A green, brown and yellow illustration of a woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and biking through a wine vineyard.

By Christine Chitnis

Amy Snook knows more about wine than your average traveler. Originally from California, she now lives in the Douro Valley of Portugal, her partner works in the wine industry, and she has visited 47 countries, many of which have celebrated viticulture. But seven years ago, on a trip to Mendoza, a winemaking region in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountains, she opted to abstain from drinking alcohol, a decision she would repeat in future travels.

“It’s such a long flight to Argentina, and I was only there for 10 days,” said Ms. Snook, 34, a publishing professional. “I’m aware of how alcohol affects me, and I chose to prioritize feeling amazing every day of the trip over dealing with a hangover.”

During her visit, Ms. Snook bicycled between vineyards, reveled in breathtaking scenery, relaxed with spa treatments and engaged with sommeliers and winemakers, coming away with a new appreciation for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

“The obvious question when you tell someone that you aren’t drinking is, ‘Out of all the places you could go, why travel to wine country?’” she said. “But to me, it makes perfect sense because these regions offer all the perks of luxury travel — wellness amenities, beautiful landscapes and fine dining.”

With 41 percent of Americans seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, according to a consumer-sentiment study released in January by NCSolutions, Ms. Snook’s experience is part of a larger trend: the rise of sober-curious or mindful drinking. While sober travel is hardly a new concept, its popularity is surging to new heights — particularly among younger generations — and forcing a reckoning in the wine industry. The 2024 State of the U.S. Wine Industry report , an annual forecast of market conditions and trends written by the wine-business analyst Rob McMillan, found that 52 percent of consumers ages 21 to 34 believe that consuming alcohol, even in moderation, is bad for your health.

This trend is reshaping travel to world-class wine destinations like Sonoma County, in California, as well as Mendoza and Tuscany. Blessed with temperate climates, extended growing seasons, fertile soils, rich histories and breathtaking vistas, these renowned wine locales are expanding their offerings to attract drinkers and nondrinkers.

Here are some of the restaurants, tour groups and wineries in those regions that are reinventing the travel experience to be more inclusive of the sober-curious.

Dining in Sonoma

If wine is a true expression of the land, embodying the unique characteristics of its soil, weather and the meticulous craftsmanship of those who cultivate it, can you still forge that connection without drinking?

At Cyrus , a Michelin-starred fine dining destination in Geyserville , Calif., the answer is a resounding yes. Sonoma County, double the size of neighboring Napa, made conscious decisions to protect and diversify its land use, ensuring grapes as well as agricultural crops were grown. Douglas Keane, Cyrus’s owner and chef, highlights the local harvest by working with small farms and purveyors to source his ingredients. Crosnes — a Chinese artichoke — from Alexander Valley Vineyards gardens, yuzu and finger limes from the citrus grower David Levine, and cheesefrom Andante Dairy have all ended up on Cyrus’s menu.

Also on the menu: Kally , an alcohol-free wine alternative produced with housemade organic verjuice and sourced from Northern California. Served at more than 15 other Michelin-starred restaurants, Kally’s bottles include Early Chardonnay, which is crisp, bright and changes flavor and aroma as it moves across the palate, similar to a fine wine. A tart, vibrant Golden Sparkler has notes of jasmine and citrus, and a floral, fruity Rosé Sparkler offers hints of strawberry and hibiscus.

“Chefs and sommeliers are interested in having precise nonalcoholic pairings. Their food was created to be prepared with sophisticated drinks, not just sparkling water,” said Scott Mitic, who created the beverage along with his wife, Katie.

Customers, too, appreciate having a choice, he said, noting that many of Kally’s most loyal drinkers are wine enthusiasts. “This is not an abstinence movement; it is a moderation movement.”

Cyrus Schultz, the wine director and sommelier at Cyrus, aims to create drinks that make sober guests feel just as special, if not more, than those indulging in traditional wine pairings. His nonalcoholic creations include the Rosé Champagne, an effervescent blend of coconut, white sesame, cherry blossom and lime, and the Apple Martini, a sweet, herbaceous concoction of pink lady apple, fennel and mint olive oil.

“The intention is never to mimic alcohol products, but to construct the pairings similarly to how a chef looks at a menu — different textures, temperatures and flavor profiles,” Mr. Schultz said.

These efforts are not limited to one restaurant. Chris Vomvolakis, senior manager of consumer public relations at Sonoma County Tourism , said bars, restaurants and wineries across the region are recognizing that it’s not all about wine.

The town of Healdsburg recently created the Mocktail Trail , with eight participating restaurants, and Meadowcroft Wines in the town of Sonoma curated a flight of original zero-proof cocktails. David Messerli, Meadowcroft’s marketing and strategy director, said the winery encourages guests “to discern aromas, flavors and nuances, much like they would with wine.”

“For those opting out of alcohol, we felt there was more we could do,” he said. “People have various reasons for abstaining from alcohol, and no one should feel excluded because of it.”

Women-led luxury in Mendoza

Mendoza, renowned for its malbec wines and stunning Andean landscapes, is no stranger to luxury accouterments, but sober guests? That is a newer phenomenon. “We have definitely noticed an increase in guests seeking nonalcoholic travel options in recent years,” said Victoria Stiles, sales manager at Cavas Wine Lodge , a luxury 18-room hotel set amid a 55-acre vineyard.

At Cavas, wine may be the main attraction, but guests can book spa treatments using vine and grape-seed extracts, join yoga sessions on the private terrace overlooking the Andes and vineyards, and take full-day hiking excursions to Aconcagua Provincial Park, a rugged, mountainous destination that is home to Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Wild Terrains , a certified B-Corp travel company specializing in experiences for women, has planned three days of a 10-day Argentina tour to be sober-inclusive in Mendoza. Built around women-owned businesses, stops include boutique lodging at Entre Cielos , horseback riding in the Andean foothills, home-cooked asado at Estancia Los Chulengos and a private dining experience at Michelin-starred Zonda Cocina de Paisaje . The meal offers special mocktail pairings with distinct flavors like lemon verbena, beets and burro, an herb used to make digestive teas and infusions.

“In Mendoza, our trip centers on talented female winemakers who are pushing boundaries in a historically male-dominated industry,” said Lauren Bates, founder of Wild Terrains. “While these experiences include wine tastings, we want sober travelers to feel intentionally included even if they are skipping the wine tasting.”

Sofia Pescarmona, owner of the Bodega Lagarde vineyard and Zonda Cocina de Paisaje, said that while the restaurant experience aims to showcase their wine, nondrinkers will also appreciate it.

“We truly believe we can offer an elevated experience for those who don’t drink wine by highlighting other seasonal produce grown on our property,” she said.

Tasting olive oil in Tuscany

Wine tastings epitomize indulgence, especially immersed in the heart of Tuscany, when visitors can savor glass after glass of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., chief executive of the Il Borro wine estate and grandson of the fashion house’s founder, encourages guests to find other ways to indulge.

“The olive harvests in the autumn produce the region’s spicy, piquant ‘green gold,’” said Mr. Ferragamo.

Il Borro, in Tuscany’s Valdarno, is a meticulously restored medieval village that includes 58 suites, three vacation villas, two restaurants, stables, working vineyards and olive groves. Olive oil production began in 1996, following the recovery of varieties like Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino that had long been neglected. Now, after touring some 80 acres of organic groves, guests can engage in a tasting experience of two distinct oils, one full-bodied with floral, fruity and grassy aromas, the other robust, peppery and dark.

Another option, Tuscan Organic Tours , offers immersive daylong experiences that delve into wine and oil but also other rich agricultural offerings. Delicious tours with private transportation highlight tastes and flavors that include Pecorino di Pienza, one of the most renowned Italian cheeses, saffron and fresh pastas. The tours include visits to organic farms, lunches, tastings, and opportunities to participate in cheese-making and saffron harvesting.
